It’s insane how chaotic some of the hot spot tourist areas are. Truly, I’m so thankful I wasn’t the one driving, because it’s madness sometimes.

Finally, the best part is that you’ll get to experience the best of Banff without worrying about any logistics. You can just sit back, relax, and enjoy your day being chauffeured around one of Canada’s most beautiful locations.

• ❄️  Jacket  – Even if your travel plans fall within the summer season, make sure to pack a lightweight jacket or some warm layers. The days may be quite warm but early mornings tend to bring cooler temperatures and it’s often chilly on mountain hikes!
• 🥾 Good Hiking Shoes – You’ll be doing lots of walking and possibly some hiking, so make sure you wear shoes that offer plenty of grip and traction. Plus, the ground can become pretty slippery when wet.
• 🌞  Sunscreen/Sunglasses/Hat  – Since the air is thinner in Banff at higher elevations, the sun’s radiation has a more potent effect. Therefore, protect yourself by lathering on sunscreen! I neglected to do this my first day and ended up with blistered, sunburnt lips 🥲 Additionally, sunglasses are an absolute must-bring item because let me tell you — the reflections off of the lake water can also be quite intense!
• 🍎 Water & Snacks — Be sure to bring a reusable water bottle and plenty of snacks! You’ll have the opportunity to grab a meal in Banff Town, but like every other touristy place, prices are heavily inflated. I recommend packing some energy-boosting snacks like nuts, granola bars, and trail mix to tide you over and minimize your chances of becoming hangry!
• 📸 Camera — Last but not least, don’t forget to bring a camera! I’ll be honest, they won’t do the views justice, but they can still capture the feeling in the air and all the memories you make along the way! And regardless, you’ll be thankful for them later on when you get to show off all the amazing things that you got to see and do!

This is probably a little redundant by now, but YES! You most definitely can do a day trip to Banff! You’ll be exhausted by the end of the day, but I promise Banff is worth visiting! The views are unmatched and I was practically in a state of disbelief the entire time I was in Banff!

The peak summer season is between June and August, so if you want to avoid the crowds, try and plan your trip for May or September. That said, winter sports enthusiasts or people who enjoy lots of snow will want to visit between October and April for the full winter wonderland effect!

If you can, I recommend spending a couple of days in Calgary. It’s a pretty neat city, and I spent almost two weeks in Calgary thanks to WestJet for canceling my flight and rescheduling it 5 days later. That said, I know most people only spend 24 hours in Calgary and then continue on their way. As for time in Banff, I suggest a full 4 days in the National Park . This will give you enough time to see lots of what Banff has to offer without feeling rushed!

The road to Banff is not scary at all! If anything, it’s gorgeous…it’s not Icefields Parkway level of beauty, but it’s so green and beautiful with the towering mountains!

If you’re visiting during the winter season, it can be rough because the snow makes the roads tricky to navigate. But, if you have chains and take your time, it’s not bad.

From all the gorgeous lakes and majestic mountain views to the ethereal wildlife encounters and quaint shops, Banff has endless activities for both tourists and locals alike.

And, if you’re only in the city for a few days and don’t have a car, the best way to discover Banff is by going with one of the fantastic Calgary to Banff tours . You’ll be able to sit back and relax as they help you make the most out of your limited time!

Banff Day Trip From Calgary: A One Day Itinerary

Of course, you’ll always want to spend more time in the Canadian Rockies, but if you find yourself with just one day to spare in Banff, we have the ultimate day trip itinerary for you.

Don’t think you can get that much done in a day? Think again! If you’re visiting Banff in the summer, remember that days start as early as 5 am, and last until nearly 11pm in late June and July! That’s a whole lot of time to see some amazing sights.

Yes, you’ll be tired, but it will be more than worth it after seeing lakes like Lake Minnewanka, Vermilion Lakes, and even the iconic Moraine Lake.

We’re sharing a very realistic version of what you can enjoy on a Banff day trip from Calgary . The first section caters to a self-driving individual, and we have tried to limit hours in the car and instead have focused on the quantity of sights. For that reason, self-driving tourists will spend more time in Canmore and Banff and stop sightseeing at Vermilion Lakes. Yes, there are a lot of hours in the day, but enjoying all that Banff has to offer, plus driving to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, is too much.

The second half of this article focuses on tours that leave from Calgary. These tours are long day trips and focus on all the main highlights in the park! Note that these are just suggestions, and if you’re looking for more tips, you can see our full example itinerary for Banff .

Banff Day Trip from Calgary: Self-Guided Itinerary

Stop in canmore for breakfast.

Any Banff day trip from Calgary will always involve a drive through Canmore, the mountain town right before Banff. If you have time to stop and take a walk down Main Street, do it! Our favorite thing to do in Canmore early in the morning is to grab a coffee at Eclipse and a proper Canmore breakfast (a bagel at Rocky Mountain Bagels). Eat it in-house or take it away so you can have your breakfast somewhere quieter.

Have Your Breakfast at Cascade Ponds

Continue driving from Canmore to Banff to Cascade Ponds . Cascade Ponds is about 15 minutes from Downtown Canmore and is just off the Trans Canada. Once at Cascade Ponds, you’ll notice plenty of picnic tables, making it the perfect place to enjoy your breakfast under Cascade Mountain.

In the early morning, the area is very quiet and peaceful, and you may get lucky and see some ducks passing by in the water. Always remember to pack out what you brought in and do not litter – there are plenty of bear proof trash cans around to dispose of your waste.

Catch Early Morning Light on Two Jack Lake

Two Jack Lake is your next stop after Cascade Ponds. Continue along Lake Minnewanka Scenic Road and follow the signs for Two Jack Lake. Here you’ll get great views of Mount Rundle, and if it’s still early morning, you can nab some fantastic photos of the calm waters without the crowds. If you have any water devices like a paddleboard or kayak, Two Jack Lake is a fantastic place for a paddle.

Enjoy a Lake Minnewanka Cruise

Once you are done at Two Jack Lake, continue on Lake Minnewanka Scenic Road, and you’ll make it to beautiful Lake Minnewanka in under five minutes. Lake Minnewanka, stretching 21 kilometers in length and plunging to a depth of 142 meters, not only serves as a crucial source of hydroelectric power for Banff, but it’s one of the best lakes to head in Banff for recreation.

During the summer, the lake is a bustling place for activities such as hiking, picnicking, and canoeing. Mount Inglismaldie looms over the lake and offers awe-inspiring views throughout the year. One of the best things to do here is enjoy a scenic cruise which takes you back to Devil’s Gap and provides a different perspective of the area. During the cruise, the captain will provide interesting history tidbits as well as tell about Lake Minnewanka’s significance to the indigenous people of the area.

Stroll Downtown Banff

Next stop is the Town of Banff, where we are guessing you will want to spend some time, especially if it’s your first time in Alberta’s most beautiful town . Enjoy all the shops on Banff Avenue, take your photo with the Banff Sign, hop into Jolenes Tea House on Bear Street, or grab a snack at Whitebark Cafe.

If you’re visiting in the summer, you’ll really enjoy Banff Avenue as it is closed off to vehicles. Enjoy a Banff patio without engines and exhaust!

Smell the Roses at Cascade Gardens

Wait for a little bit longer for lunch and walk from Banff Avenue to Cascade Gardens . These are free gardens that offer an ideal destination for a leisurely stroll from the town center. Whether you possess a passion for nature or botanical knowledge or just want to see the first administration building of Parks Canada, it’s well worth heading here for at least 30 minutes for your daily dose of plant goodness.

As you wander through the gardens, you’ll encounter various plant groupings and plenty of COLORS. In addition to the captivating flora and fauna showcased, the gardens boast ponds, a waterfall, and meandering paths leading to picturesque vistas.

Walk to Bow Falls

From the gardens, you can continue your walk along the Bow River to Bow Falls . There’s a nice walking path that runs parallel to the river, ending at a scenic viewpoint out to one of the most iconic waterfalls in Banff .

Snap your photos of the nine-meter waterfall. No, it’s not a huge waterfall in Alberta by any means, but it is still one of the best sights to see near the townsite and is completely surrounded by natural scenery and rocky cliffs.

Have Lunch in Downtown Banff

After Bow Falls, you’ll walk back to Downtown Banff. You’ve walked a lot by this point so hopefully you’re counting your steps! You’ve likely worked up a big appetite with all that walking! Thankfully, there are plenty of restaurants in Banff that will satisfy any craving.

Craving something cheap and quick? Hankki will have you some Korean street food in under five minutes and under $12. Want something healthy? We recommend Nourish on Bear Street , while you can’t go wrong with a delicious pizza and beer at Three Bears Brewery. If you just want to soak up the sun and vibes, Tooloulous has one of the best patios in Banff!

Head Up the Banff Gondola

Don’t spend too long eating – the day is getting away from you, and you’ll want plenty of time to head up the Banff Gondola , which is one of the best attractions in Banff.

There are multiple gondolas in Banff , but the Banff Gondola offers absolutely incredible panoramic views over the Town of Banff and the Bow and Spray Valley. The gondola takes visitors to the top of Sulphur Mountain in eight minutes, and no matter age or ability, it allows everyone to see what being on top of a mountain feels like.

We’ve now been up the Banff Gondola nearly 10 times, as it’s a popular thing to do when our family or friends visit. Everyone that we bring up the gondola says it’s their favorite thing to do on their entire trip! You’ll want 1.5 to 2 hours to spare up here as you can walk the boardwalk to the historic Sulphur Mountain Weather Station and see Cascade Mountain from a different perspective.

Catch Sunset at Vermilion Lakes

No visit to Banff would be complete without catching evening light somewhere spectacular. For us, that special place is always Vermilion Lakes. You’ll see Vermilion Lakes on your way out of Banff and if you head here around sunset, you could be in for a treat (if the mountain weather cooperates)

Vermilion Lakes (or Lake Vermilion) reflect the iconic Mount Rundle that looms over the town of Banff and there are a few docks here to enjoy the view from.

Have Dinner in Canmore

While you can have dinner in Banff, we recommend hitting Canmore once more for a meal before returning to Calgary. There are plenty of Canmore restaurants to enjoy, and we think many of them are better than those in Banff.

For lively pub food, we recommend The Tavern , while if you’re looking for a romantic evening Sauvage is a great choice. If you have kids, Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co might be a great place to stop with them!

Day Trip Tours to Banff From Calgary

Banff area & johnston canyon 1-day tour from calgary or banff.

This long-day tour leaves from Calgary and takes visitors to Banff Avenue, with an optional visit to the Banff Gondola. Instead of some of the sights I mentioned in the self-guided section, this tour brings guests along the Bow Valley Parkway to Johnston Canyon , where you can hike to the Lower and Upper Falls at the famous attraction. There is also a stop at Bow Falls, Surprise Corner , and a 15-minute stop to see the hoodoos nearby before heading back to Calgary.

Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, & Banff Tour

This is one of the top-selling tours in the summer as it brings visitors to the most sought-after spots in Banff National Park – Lake Louise and Moraine Lake after there’s also a stop at Johnston Canyon. This is the ideal tour if your main agenda is seeing Moraine and Lake Louise.

Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake

This tour not only takes you into Banff but also into Yoho National Park to set the dazzling Emerald Lake . Besides the lakes, you’ll also pass by Spiral Tunnels and the Natural Bridge on your way to Emerald Lake. This is a great tour if you don’t want to worry about any of the hassles of getting to Moraine Lake or Lake Louise. National Park Fees are also included in the tour.

Hop On/ Hop Off

If you truly want a hassle-free experience, you can’t go wrong with the hop-on, hop-off shuttle bus. You can begin your adventure in Banff, Johnston Canyon, Lake Louise, or the Lake Louise Gondola ; the decision is entirely yours. This tour really lets you explore Banff at your own pace, and that includes a visit to Moraine Lake. Take as long or as short as you need at each stop.

The only bad news is this tour does not leave from Calgary, but instead from The Moose Hotel in Banff. So as long as you can get yourself there to start your day, you’ll be on a fabulous day in the Rockies. This summer-only tour runs from June 7th to September 22, 2024.

Icefields Parkway (Stops at Peyto Lake)

This tour is for those whose main interest is hopping on the Icefields Parkway . Arrival in Calgary and touring to Banff

To start your vacation, your private tour guide for the next five days will pick you up from the location of your choice within Calgary whether it is the Calgary Airport, downtown, or the surrounding area. For those who are arriving on a flight, your guide will meet you in the arrivals section of the airport.

From Calgary, your adventure to the Canadian Rockies begins! The drive from Calgary to Banff takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours as the scenery outside of your private vehicle gradually changes from prairie landscapes, to foothills, to mountain peaks. Depending on the time that you arrive in Calgary and the preferences of your group, your guide would be happy to make stops to show you some of the sights along the way.

Half-Day Private Tour: Banff Highlights and Banff Gondola

Today, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in the morning for a half-day sightseeing tour of the town of Banff and its surrounding highlights. Visit Surprise Corner for the best views of Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, otherwise known as “The Castle in the Rockies”. See the towering mountains including Rundle, Tunnel, Cascade, and Norquay. Learn about the wind-shaped hoodoos, see Bow Falls, and experience a scenic drive along Tunnel Mountain Drive.

The highlight of today’s tour is a gentle ride on the Banff Gondola up to the top of Sulphur Mountain for fantastic views of the Bow Valley, interpretive boardwalks, and endless photo opportunities.

Upon completion of the tour, the rest of the afternoon in Banff is yours to spend how you wish. The exact timing of the day is up to you as it is a private tour but it is best to plan for a 2 to 3 PM end to the tour if you are making afternoon plans. Let your guide know where you would like to be dropped off in town.

Full-Day Private Tour: Banff to Lake Louise Sightseeing Tour

Today, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in the morning with your luggage for a full-day sightseeing tour of the area between Banff and Lake Louise. During this tour, you will travel along the Alberta and BC border, cross the Continental Divide, and explore more sights within Banff National Park and Yoho National Park.

From May to October , the tour will focus on the many mountain lakes, and waterfalls in the area which include key locations such as Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake, and Takakkaw Falls.

From December to March , the lakes will be frozen over and some of the mountain roads will be closed meaning that Moraine Lake and Takakkaw Falls are not accessible, however, there is still plenty to do and see! There are some great, optional, Canadian winter activities that can be included on this day. Let us know your preference for the following activities in advance of your trip:

Today is a free day to relax and enjoy one of the most beautiful locations in the Canadian Rockies. If you need some recommendations for what to do, see below, or let your guide know the day before if you prefer to take things day by day.

From May to October , here are a few ideas on how to spend your day:

• Canoeing – Rent a canoe and explore the waters of Lake Louise (generally available starting in late May or early June)
• Hiking – The Lake Agnes Tea House is a popular 7 KM (4.5 Mile) hike that starts from the hotel

Today, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in the morning with your luggage for a full-day tour/transfer from Lake Louise back to Calgary. By this time, your guide will have gotten to know you pretty well and will make some recommendations for any last-chance sights to see before leaving the Rockies. This could include other stops in Banff, Yoho, or Kootenay National Parks that weren’t previously included on Day 2 or 3, or new locations such as Kananaskis, Canmore, or even a highlights tour of the city of Calgary.

Upon arrival in Calgary, you will be dropped off at your Calgary downtown hotel. It is time to say goodbye to your tour guide as your trip comes to an end with your last night in Calgary.

It’s quick and easy to get from Calgary to Banff. Off in the distance, the jagged peaks of the Canadian Rockies line the horizon, and the drive makes it no wonder that it’s one of Alberta’s most popular tourist destinations. However, no matter the method of your arrival in Calgary, it’s the view to the west which is the immediate appeal for most. Especially in Banff in winter , the mountains are begging to be explored by ski or dog sled. In the summer, hiking trails line their valleys and ridges.

Nestled at the base of the Rockies is the charming resort town of Banff. While the stunning scenery and outdoor activities are the main draws, this town inside a National Park of the same name appeals to everyone. Think soaking in hot springs, a deluge of fine dining options, museums displaying Banff’s unique history, and much more.

While Calgary is a worthy destination in its own right, getting to Banff is what attracts the masses. Below, you will find options for making the trip from Calgary to Banff and some fun options for what to do along the way.

About the Route

How far is banff from calgary.

The distance between Calgary and Banff varies if you’re taking the fast or scenic route.

Fastest route

The most common route is by taking the Trans-Canada (Highway 1). The distance from Calgary to Banff is 127 km and the driving time is approximately 1.5 hours .

Alternative More Scenic Route

An alternative and scenic route, if you have the time, is to consider taking Highway 1A through to Canmore before rejoining Highway 1. The distance on this route is 134 km and driving time is approximately 1 3/4 hours. You could also take this on your return trip from Banff to Calgary.

Note that these driving times are in optimal conditions and are not necessarily representative of winter driving or peak traffic. Weekends are always busy – if you plan to get to Banff on a Friday night and back on Sunday, you should expect additional time on the road. Also, be aware that when driving during the winter months (October – April) we recommend having winter tires. Winter tires are mandatory if you plan on driving the Icefields Parkway during your winter trip.

Banff National Park Pass

IMPORTANT: Banff National Park requires a pass to enter the park.

Effective January 1, 2024 daily fees are:

• Adult: $10.50
• Senior: $9.00
• Youth (up to 17 yo): FREE
• Family/group (up to 7 people): $21.00
• Commercial group (per person): $9.00

The daily passes expire at 4 pm the following day. If you’re looking to enter multiple times or staying longer, consider the Parks Canada Discovery Pass . It gives you unlimited admission for a year to all the national parks in Canada.

Discovery Pass fees are as follows:

• Adult: $72.25
• Senior: $61.75
• Family/group: $145.25

The park gates are 100 km west of Calgary on Highway 1, and passes can be purchased upon arrival. Alternatively, they can also be purchased online in advance. For more information, visit the Parks Canada website .

Easiest Ways to Get to Banff

Assuming that you are arriving in Calgary via airplane (YYC), the following are all options to get you to Banff.

Driving from Calgary to Banff

Fortunately, driving from Calgary to Banff National Park is scenic and full of surprising sights as the prairies give way to foothills and ultimately lead to the Rocky Mountains. Travelling by car allows you to take as many photos and other stops along the way as you like.

Please be mindful of driving conditions, especially in winter. While Alberta’s highways are in great shape and well-maintained, snowstorms can wreak havoc for days, and construction can slow things down in summer. Learn more about Alberta’s road laws and driving guidelines . In addition, check current road reports before you leave.

The closest airport to Banff is Calgary International Airport , located on the north end of Calgary. From the airport, the best way to get to Banff is via Highway 2 north to Stoney Trail (201), which meets up with Highway 1 (also known as the Trans-Canada Highway) and takes you all the way to the town of Banff.

Fortunately, there are also plenty of car rental options at the Calgary airport. Book in advance to ensure less hassle:

• We recommend booking via  RentalCars.com to select the cheapest rate or to book with whichever company you prefer.

If you are not interested in a traditional car rental through an agency, you can also rent cars through a website called Turo (think Airbnb for car rentals). The Calgary International Airport is a frequent pick-up/drop-off point.

Just arrived in Calgary and need a hotel?

If you are not in a rush, or want to spend an extra night in Calgary because you arrive late, there are plenty of hotels in the area. Those right onsite at the airport tend to be more expensive, so we prefer these options:

• Hotel Clique is a super chic and affordable hotel that has free parking, free WiFi, and a great restaurant onsite. It is a quick shuttle ride from the airport, and we have stayed here several times when we have an early flight out of Calgary. Bonus: it has two rooftop pools!
• Want to start the journey and cut down on the drive the next day? The Four Points by Sheraton is on the western edge of the city, just off of Highway 1. You’ll get an easy jumpstart to Banff the next day. Parking and WiFi are both free.

Calgary to Banff by Bus or Shuttle

Taking the bus to Banff can be a great idea for those who want to sit back and enjoy the scenery. There are several options for a Calgary to Banff shuttle bus service and here are the following companies:

Brewster Express

Brewster Express has been connecting Calgary to Banff, Canmore, Kananaskis, Lake Louise, and Jasper for 125 years. They offer departures from the Calgary airport (YYC) and downtown Calgary right to your hotel door in Banff. As of January 2024 , there are multiple daily departures, and the fares are:

• Adult – $81 one way / $137 return trip
• Child – (5 – 17) $54 / $92 return trip
• Children under 6 – FREE

Banff Airporter

The Banff Airporter provides the most extensive bus service between Calgary and Banff. In the summer months service starts as early as 3 am from Banff and departing as late as midnight from Calgary International Airport. As of January 2024 there are ten departures daily, and the fares are:

• Adults – $79.99 one way / $159.98 return
• Seniors (65+) – $71.99 one way / $143.98 return
• Child (6-17) – $39.99 one way / $79.98 return
• Children Under 5 – FREE

Discover Banff Tours

Travel safely and comfortably with Discover Banff Tours , which offers a quick and easy shuttle from the Calgary Airport to Banff or from Calgary downtown to Banff. There are multiple departures daily from Calgary International Airport and a few daily departures from Calgary downtown. The rates are:

• Child – $39 one way
• Senior – $70 one way

New to the shuttle scene are RTB Tours & Shuttles . They offer daily shuttle service from Calgary (from several downtown locations and the Brentwood Transit station) to Banff & Canmore. When arriving in Banff, they stop at most hotels. As of January, 2024, their rates for shuttle service from Calgary to Banff are:

• Adult – $52 one way / $101 return
• Child – $50 one way / $97 return
• Adult – $59 one way / $115 return
• Child – $57 one way / $111 return

The Banff Express

If you’re looking for an affordable option to get from Calgary to Banff, The Banff Express offers this. There are two daily departures and their buses leave from a number of locations in Calgary including Calgary Eau Claire Market, the Foothills Hospital the HI Calgary City Centre Hostel. Dropoff in Banff is right in the middle of town at the Banff Train Station or right to your hotel if you ask the driver nicely.

• Adults – $40 one way / $80 return
• Child – $22 one way / $44 return

Note that one carry-on piece and one large stow-away luggage (50lbs) are included per person.

On-It Transit Service

During the spring and summer months, On-It Transit bus service is an easy and affordable way to get from Calgary to Banff by bus on weekends and is only $10! It departs from several transit spots and is in downtown Calgary (but does not stop at the airport).

Private Transfers to Banff

Want to arrive in Banff in style? Private transfers from Calgary International Airport to Banff National Park are a convenient and relaxing way to get to the Rocky Mountains without waiting in lines or making multiple shuttle stops. Some private transfer options are below:

• Banff Transportation Group – Departing from Calgary airport to Banff or vice versa.
• Banff Sedan – Luxury never looked so good! For 3-5 people, it’s approximately $500 (for up to 10 people, roughly $700) for a one-way journey, and the stylish ride on your schedule is worth it.
• Limo To Go – This service has luxury sedans and SUVs, limos, and stretch limos to help you get from Calgary to Banff in style.

Calgary to Banff by Ride Sharing

• Taxis are always an option, and plenty will be waiting at the airport for your arrival! Note that it can cost approximately $250 for a one-way journey.
• Uber is in Calgary; however, consider that drivers may not be willing or capable of making the drive, and the price is close to what a taxi would cost for just one way.
• Consider Poparide.com. There are options to select your driver based on your luggage and equipment requirements if you are travelling with skis, bikes, etc. Poparide charges per seat, so you have an opportunity to meet other visitors if you are travelling solo to Banff National Park. Currently, no seat appears to cost more than $20 for the ride from Calgary to Banff.
• Currently, there is no train between Calgary and Banff, although there are plans to eventually build one. There is also no airport in Banff; the closest international airport is Calgary International Airport (YYC).

Fun Things to Do Along the Way

If you arrive in Calgary early and travel by car, there are so many things to do on the way to Banff.

Here are a few of our favourites:

Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary

Located on the way to Banff off Highway 1A just outside of Cochrane, the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary is a fantastic place to visit. It is one of the only sanctuaries in Canada to pair successful rehabilitation and re-homing of wolfdogs with public education. Three possible tours are offered: A sanctuary walk, an intro tour, and an interactive one. The first two are drop-in friendly, but the interactive tour requires booking at least 1-2 weeks in advance.

Calaway Park

If your travels bring you through during summer and you have the kiddos in tow, consider a stop at Calaway Park to blow off some pent-up energy from a long flight. The park has 32 rides, 24 games, and exciting live shows to enjoy. The different rides are suitable for children of different ages so that everyone can have fun. 

Kananaskis Nordic Spa

Ways to Get Around Banff

In case you don’t have a vehicle, there are a number of ways to get around Banff. Roam Transit offers many options in the Banff townsite and to destinations throughout Banff National Park. Their bus routes and destinations include Sulphur Mountain ( Banff Gondola ), Banff Upper Hot Springs, Tunnel Mountain, Lake Minnewanka , Lake Louise , and Johnston Canyon . You can also take Roam Transit to Banff.

Banff is an easily walkable townsite as well. There are a number of walking trails throughout the town that will bring you to some amazing viewpoints including Bow Falls and Banff Surprise Corner.

Things to Do in Banff

There is so much to do in Banff in both the summer and the winter. From hiking to biking, canoeing to canyoning, taking the Banff Gondola , or shopping and spa-ing. There is something for everyone. From Calgary to Banff: 5 Best Ways to Get There

The town of Banff, in stunning Banff National Park , is an easy trip from Calgary. Many visitors arrive by air in Calgary and then find their way by road to Banff. Calgary is the closest major city and the closest international airport to Banff.

Banff is only 150 kilometers from Calgary , and the drive time is less than two hours by car on a divided highway. If you have your own vehicle, this is an easy trip, with no real mountain driving involved.

If not, several options are available for getting from Calgary to Banff. You can rent a car and drive yourself, take a shared shuttle, or hire a private transfer. Shuttles and buses will get you to the town of Banff but if you want to explore further afield, you may want to consider hopping on a day tour that will take you to the highlights around Banff.

No matter which method you choose, the ride from Calgary to Banff will be spectacular. As you leave Calgary, the road leads past rolling farmland, with snowcapped peaks in the distance, and eventually into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, before taking you into the park and the town of Banff.

1. From Calgary to Banff by Car

From the airport, the route from Calgary to Banff couldn't be easier, with a total of six turns: two lefts and four rights. Apart from a few city streets at the start and end of the route, a majority of the 1.5-hour drive is on divided highways. If you are arriving in your own car, just find your way to Highway 201 and follow the instructions below.

Starting from the airport, you make your way along Barlow Trail NE to Country Hills Blvd NE. Take a left after a short distance, then take a right onto Highway 201 West. Eventually, you'll exit right onto the Trans-Canada Highway with signs pointing you to Banff.

This is a scenic drive past rolling farmland and distant mountain views. Eventually, you'll crest Scott Lake Hill, the highest point on the Trans Canada Highway at 1,410 meters, 4,625 feet. It's at this point that the Rocky Mountains present themselves in their full glory.

The road descends and winds its way past the turnoff for Kananaskis Country , around Lac des Arcs and past the mountain town of Canmore . Canmore is another beautiful town and a great alternative to Banff if you are interested in hiking, biking, or camping . Just past Canmore, you'll come to the park gates (fee charged).

Continue on for a few more kilometers and keep a lookout for a sign for Banff, and exit to make your way into town. Parking is in one of several large surface lots or, if you are lucky enough, on the street. The town has an online parking tracker that details parking availability in real-time.

2. From Calgary to Banff by Tour

If you want to travel from Calgary to Banff and explore around the townsite as well, a day trip tour is your best option. Tour operators will take you in luxurious comfort to all the main sights in and around Banff; your only responsibility is to gaze out the window and soak up the scenery. You'll be picked up at your hotel and whisked to the mountains, see some of the top sights, and then be taken back to Calgary.

Highlights of the Banff Day Trip from Calgary tour include a scenic ride to Banff, seeing sights like Bow Falls, Johnston Canyon, and of course, time to wander around the town of Banff. A ride on the Banff Gondola is also included; the view from the summit of Sulphur Mountain is spectacular, with six snowcapped mountain peaks easily visible.

Grab a bite to eat in one of the two restaurants at the top. Sky Bistro serves up award-winning fare in a room with massive picture windows that make the outside seem inside. The Northern Lights Alpine Kitchen is another good option serving more traditional food, ideal for families.

An optional add-on to the tour is a boat tour on Lake Minnewanka for an additional fee.

If you only want to take the trip and tour one-way, the option to remain in Banff is allowed.

3. From Calgary to Banff by Shuttle Bus

Getting to Banff from Calgary on a shuttle couldn't be easier. Three main operators run buses of varying sizes on this route, and you'll find that a bus of some sort is likely leaving within a few minutes of when you want to go.

Buses leave from the Calgary International Airport and from downtown hotels and head to Banff with a stop in Canmore along the way. Depending on your departure time, an additional stop at the Stony Nakota Resort may be scheduled.

The trip takes approximately two hours and is especially scenic, with city views at the start, rolling prairie views in the middle, and spectacular mountain vistas for the final third of the trip.

Buses are modern and comfortable; all have plugs for your electronics, and some have Wi-Fi service. Trips should be booked in advance on the operators' websites. Most offer discounts for return trips.

Depending on the operator, you'll likely be dropped at your hotel in Banff or even right to your rental property. Operators include Brewster Express , Banff Airporter , and RTB Tours & Shuttles .

If you are arriving at Calgary International Airport and connecting directly to a shuttle, collect your luggage and follow the signs to Ground Transportation near door number 5. You'll see the transport desks of all the bus companies there.

4. From Calgary to Banff by Bus: On-It Transit Service

The cheapest way to get to Banff from Calgary is via the On-It Transit Service . For the rock-bottom price of approximately $10 one way, this service will whisk you from Calgary to downtown Banff. The service runs from May to September on weekends and holidays each summer.

Comfortable coaches leave from two locations in Calgary: downtown at 1st Street and 8th Ave SW, and the Crowfoot LRT station, 141 Crowfoot Way NW. Both these stops make connecting with local Calgary public transport a breeze.

Upon arrival in Banff, the bus drops you off at the Banff High School at 330 Banff Avenue, right on the main street in town and in the heart of the action.

Keep your ticket, because as an added bonus, you can transfer from the On-It service to the Roam Transit service for free in Banff. This fantastic local service has a variety of routes that cover all the major attractions in town and the surrounding areas.

5. From Calgary to Banff by Private Transfer

If trying to figure out schedules and waiting around for other people to get organized and onto a bus are not really your thing, consider a Private Shuttle to Banff . Your exclusive driver will meet you and your group at the airport or at your hotel with a sign with your name on it.

From here, your private transport will luxuriously get you right to the door of your chosen hotel in approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the city traffic and your departure point.

Calgary to Banff Bus Service

In the summer, you can catch the $10 bus with On-It Regional Service from Calgary Downtown to Banff. This service has limited stops and doesn’t pick up from the Calgary Airport but it’s a great low-cost option. Be sure to book early, buses fill up fast! 

Once you get to Banff you can get around town and to some of the local attractions easily on the energy-efficient Roam buses at any time of year. The buses are operated by Bow Valley Regional Transit Services Commission and run regularly throughout the day for a small fee.

Drive Yourself Around Calgary, Banff, Canmore and Everywhere In Between

Skipping the airport shuttle, private car services, and buses, to rent a car (or drive your own) offers you a lot of advantages when visiting Banff. With this option, you can leave the airport whenever you please or skip the airport altogether. This can be a good option because some of the hikes and attractions are off-the-beaten-track and difficult to get to if you don’t have your own transport. However, if you want to take a break from navigating your own way, you can always book a guided tour and get picked up from your hotel directly. It’s worth bearing in mind that most hotels will offer parking, but that parking spaces in the town (and at the sites) can be limited. The new Banff Parking mobile site is an easy way to find free off-street parking availability from your smartphone.

There are only a few months in the Canadian summer warm enough for road work, so it is inevitable that there will be some construction happening if you are making the drive between late May and early November. Pay attention to the construction zone speed limits and watch out for road workers.

If you have your own car or you are renting a vehicle, you can drive from Calgary to Banff in about an hour and a half .

 Calgary To Banff Highways

There are a couple of main route options from Calgary to Banff and back.

1) The Stoney Trail (Hwy 201)

The Stoney Trail is a faster route that skips the inner city section of Highway 1 and then connects past the Calgary city limits, so you will get to Banff sooner. It will only take you around an hour and 30 minutes to get there, so this is the route that most locals take when they want to get to Banff efficiently. However, there aren’t many stops along the way for food, fuel, or shopping so you will have to wait until you reach Banff.

2) Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1)

Highway 1 is a bit slower and it has a lot of stoplights within the Calgary city limits. You’ll pass some fast food stores, shopping malls, and grocery stores if you want to stop for food or supplies before your trip.

Remember – prices for food at the supermarket in Calgary will be cheaper than in Banff so you may want to stock up on snacks. You should also fuel up on gas before you leave Calgary, as the prices for fuel will be more expensive in the National Park.

Other Transportation Options:

Unfortunately, there is no train between Calgary and Banff, although we would love it if there was! We will be sure to keep you updated and let you know if a train that can take you around our area becomes available.

Take a Taxi in Calgary

There are many taxi cab companies in Calgary to choose from and the rates for the journey are fixed by the government. Some of the local Calgary taxi companies include Associated Cabs , Checker Cabs , and Calgary Cabs . The approximate cost from the Calgary Airport to Banff for the 140km journey is $250 one way.

Taking an Uber around, to, and from Calgary to Banff is another viable option, although it is not quite as predictable. The average cost of an Uber ride, specifically from Calgary to Banff is approximately $150 – $300 depending on the time of day and service availability. Check the app for latest pricing.

Another Fee to Consider as You Choose Your Transportation

When you enter Banff National Park, you will need to pay the official entry fees for the park. You can purchase your Banff Park Pass online , or you can pay for it when you reach the entrance gate to Banff National Park on Highway 1. If you are considering staying in Banff for more than 7 days, it makes financial sense to buy an Annual Discovery Pass.

How Will You Get to Banff?

There is no wrong answer, and t he right choice for you will depend on your budget, timing , and travel style. But n o matter which route you choose, your Rocky Mountian journey will be truly spectacular. With summer on the horizon, Banff and Lake Louise Tourism is partnering with transportation agencies to boost mass transit options for visitors coming from near and far.

David Matys, vice-president of destination development for Banff and Lake Louise Tourism, said he is excited to work with On-It Regional Transit, especially with the increase in first-ever service to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.

“They did a terrific job last year, and we’re excited to see that they’re expanding that service in partnership with the Town of Banff, Canmore and Parks Canada on sort of an overall integrated approach to transit,” he said.

“We’re excited that that partnership is evolving and that there are more options for people to come to Banff by mass transit.”

On-It’s traditional service to Canmore and Banff commences May 17 and runs until Oct. 14. The new additions are a direct service to and from Lake Louise beginning June 14 until Sept. 2, and a direct service to Moraine Lake beginning Sept. 6 until Oct. 14.

The Parks Canada website says visitors can expect significant traffic disruptions throughout the summer due to construction in the Lake Louise area. Matys said the first day of online bookings for transit options on the Parks Canada site saw 24,000 reservations.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming visitors back to Banff National Park this summer; this summer is going to continue to be very popular with regional and longer-haul audiences. I guess the most important message we would have is that they need to plan ahead to avoid disappointment,” Matys said, adding that parking is limited in the summer months , and transit shuttles and private tours are the best ways to experience the park.

“We have a fairly integrated transit system that not everybody is familiar with, but there are options to get here from Calgary that’s not in a car.”

Matys said the Banff and Lake Louise Tourism messaging has for several years been about a co-ordinated transportation shift campaign between Parks Canada, the Town of Banff and the organization to encourage visitors to plan ahead and take transit.

“Visitors are listening. On-It was extremely popular last summer and even on long weekends through the winter this past year, and they’ve increased their service because there’s a demand. So, we really applaud and thank those visitors who are booking alternative options to get here — it is making a difference.”

Matys said in terms of moving around Banff National Park, Roam Transit had a record year in 2023, while Parks Canada recorded an exceptional year in terms of people using shuttles. He added that private operators are also seeing an increase in people moving to mass transportation options.

“Our message about planning ahead and considering exploring the park in a different fashion than within your car is being heard, and we’re greatly encouraged by that,” he said.

On-It transit service to Banff, Canmore bumps prices, adds direct route to Lake Louise

Calgarians traveling to Banff or Canmore will soon have the option of using On-It Regional Transit, which resumes operations next month.

The cost-effective shuttle wrapped up its seasonal service in October, but will start again on May 17.

This year, the shuttle will include direct service to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.

Service to and from Lake Louise runs from June 14 to Sept. 2, while service to and from Moraine Lake runs Sept. 6 to Oct. 14.

Fares to use On-It will be increasing this year, the first increase since the service launched in 2017.

Adults (16-64) using the Calgary to Canmore/Banff service will now pay $12.50 each way, up from $10.

Fares for children (5-15) and seniors (65+) will remain the same; $10 each way.

Children under four still travel for free, but a seat must be reserved if required.

Fares to travel from Calgary to Lake Louise will be $17.50 each way for adults, $12.50 each way for children and $12.50 each way for seniors.

"On-It really is the best way to see Banff National Park," said spokesperson Jonathan Weal in a Friday news release.

"Planning your visit ahead of time, especially local transportation options, is vital to get the most out of your time in the park."
