Travel Nursing from Canada!

Your international travel nursing ticket to the usa.

Lanita and Jessika posing for a photo with a dog.

Want to join fellow Canadian nurses working in the USA?

Travel nursing from Canada to the US is easier than you might think. At Aya Healthcare, we handle the paperwork so you can focus on what you do best: taking care of patients. We’ll take care of everything else.

And we mean EVERYTHING! We don’t think coming to the USA should cost you a lot of time or money. That’s why we offer this concierge service to make things as easy as possible.

Become a Canadian Nurse Working in the USA

International travel nursing can be intimidating. That’s why we walk you through each step of the process.

What’s the timeline for travel nursing from Canada? The short answer is around six months (with Aya). That’s around half the time it would take you to do it on your own or go through other Canadian travel nursing agencies. Our experts walk you through the process and review your paperwork for errors before you submit. We get you there faster by removing the barriers that slow your application.

As a Canadian nurse moving to the USA, here’s what you’ll need:

VisaScreen certification through CGFNS

CGFNS evaluates your education/credentials and verifies that you can work in the US by granting the VisaScreen certification. If you qualify for our licensure project (see right) we'll reimburse your $540 application fee once you start working. And more good news ... we can take care of the following requirements simultaneously. Again, the ENTIRE process should only take six months.

US State License

You’ve applied for VisaScreen certification. Great job! Now you need a US state license (we’ll pay for this too if you qualify). This can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks to be issued. Again, we can work on your license while you’re waiting for your VisaScreen certification.

Book a travel nursing job!

Now, you’re ready to go. Because you’re smart, you’re working with an experienced Canadian travel nursing agency. As we say in the US, “this isn’t our first rodeo.” We have deep relationships with facilities across the country. We know which healthcare facilities will book you with some of the paperwork pending.

Border crossing documentation

Congrats! You got a job and it’s time to join your fellow Canadian travel nurses in the USA! We’ll walk you through what you need to bring. Gather that documentation and cross the border within 10 days of your contract start date. Request TN Status (AKA the TN Visa for Canadian nurses) at the border. Again, we’ll help with this!

Apply for a US Social Security Number

Once you’re in the US, it’s time to apply for your social security number. This number allows you to work in any state. You should get your social security card in the mail in 4-8 weeks. This won’t affect your timeline. You can work at certain facilities while waiting for your social security card.

(Offices are currently closed due to COVID-19. This doesn't affect your ability to work.)

If any of this sounds complicated, don’t worry! We send you detailed instructions for each step of the process, track the status of your application and provide updates along the way. We have an expert licensing team dedicated to Canadian nurses. They can answer questions and provide guidance. Contact them anytime!

Start Travel Nursing in the US Today!

Here’s what it takes to qualify for Aya’s licensing project:

  • RN degree from a Canadian nursing program
  • At least 2 years of experience in your specialty
  • Proof you passed the NCLEX

If you don't fit these criteria, don't be discouraged. Get in touch with us, we're still happy to help any way we can.

Meet travel nurses in the USA

Claudia with a bicycle.

Aya Healthcare is the preferred supplier at multiple facilities in North Carolina, New York, Minnesota, Washington and Texas. We can get you licensed quickly in those states. While you’re working your first contract (which will likely last 13 weeks or longer) we’ll help you get licensed in any state of your choosing!

We have a deep understanding of the units we staff and of fluctuations in census across the country. Essentially, we know when facilities will need RNs. We can book you assignments months in advance and ensure the units you choose are a good fit for your skill set and personality. These career planning services are just part of the package you get with Aya Healthcare.

Aya is your travel insurance policy.

International travel nursing opens the door to many wonderful experiences, but anytime you travel you may encounter bumps in the road. Things happen. When they do, we’ll be there.

We have 9,000+ open RN assignments across the country. (If you ever have an assignment cancelled, we’ll find you another #JobSecurity!) If you miss your flight and get stranded at the airport, if you have a clinical issue on the job, if you’re sick and can’t make a shift … never fear. We’ll be here. 24/7. We’ll send you an emergency contact number so you can reach us at all hours of the day or night.

Don’t want to go it alone? No problem. Bring a friend (or friends). If you ever get lonely as a Canadian nurse working in the USA, refer someone! With our smooth, easy process for getting you ready to work stateside, feel free to entice as many Canadian RNs as you’d like to join you on your journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you skipped the top of this page you may not know, so we’ll say it again … absolutely! Apply now and we’ll help get you started.

Pretty easy if you stick with us. We’ll walk you through the process and make sure everything goes smoothly. We have an expert team who’ve helped hundreds of Canadian nurses working in the USA. They can help you too.

In general, you’ll make more as a travel nurse in the United States than as a permanent nurse in Canada. Pay depends on where you go: states and specialties pay differently. Your recruiter (we’ll assign you one when you apply) can help you maximize your pay!

Good question! That’s up to you. You can either choose housing that we provide or take a housing stipend and find a place on your own. If you prefer the stipend, our housing team can provide you with resources that should make your search easy and, dare we say, enjoyable?

We’d love to! We bet we’ve answered a lot of your questions higher up on this page. But, if you have a question that isn’t answered on this page or would just like to talk things through, contact us and we’ll be in touch.

Aya Healthcare will provide your TN letter if you book an assignment with us. Travel nursing in the US here you come!

We might be biased, but we think you’ve found us. 😊 Check out our reviews if you’re looking for external corroboration that we’re one of the best travel nursing agencies for Canadian nurses.

You’ll have an entire Aya support team to help with each step of your journey. Your recruiter is your first point of contact (he or she is your guru, your guide.) We’ll also assign you housing , payroll and licensing experts — plus a travel experience specialist to make sure you’re happy with everything, down to the tiniest details of your assignment.

There are many reasons Canadian nurses work in the USA. Some are looking to expand their clinical skill set by working in new facilities, others want to travel to new and exciting places and some are looking to make great money. Some want all the above! Whatever your reasons for international travel nursing, we’re more than happy to help.

Challenges of Travel Nursing in Canada

Travel nursing is an exciting career that allows healthcare professionals to explore different cities and regions while providing essential care. However, like any job, it also comes with its fair share of challenges. In this blog section, we will explore some of the challenges that travel nurses may face in Canada.

A. Frequent relocations and adjusting to new environments

  • Travel nurses are constantly on the move, relocating to different healthcare facilities in various cities or provinces.
  • Each new location brings with it the need to adapt to a different work environment and familiarize oneself with new policies and procedures.
  • These frequent relocations can be mentally and emotionally draining, as nurses have to constantly adjust to new surroundings, making new friends, and establishing a support network.

B. Limited job security and stability

  • Travel nursing contracts usually have a fixed duration, ranging from a few weeks to several months.
  • Once a contract ends, nurses may face uncertainty and have to look for a new assignment.
  • This lack of job security can be stressful, especially if nurses have financial obligations or are the primary earners in their families.

C. Potential lack of support from colleagues and familiarity

  • When working as a travel nurse, building a support network can be challenging, as nurses are constantly moving from one location to another.
  • Travel nurses may not have the same level of rapport with colleagues and may miss the familiar faces and comfort of working in a long-term position.
  • This lack of support and familiarity can affect the overall work experience and make it harder to cope with the demands of the job.

It’s important for travel nurses to remember that challenges are a part of any job, and they can be overcome with the right mindset and support. By focusing on the positives and embracing the adventure, travel nursing in Canada can be an incredibly rewarding career choice.

In short, the challenges faced by travel nurses in Canada include frequent relocations, limited job security, and potential lack of support. However, by taking proactive steps and maintaining a positive attitude, travel nurses can navigate these challenges and thrive in their careers.

Northern Med Logo

Creating a space for nurses to thrive.

Northern Medical Connections is a preferred Canadian travel nurse agency, proudly based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Our mission is to connect nurses to job opportunities across Canada where they feel valued, supported & safe.

Woman standing in nature with open space

Started by Nurses. For Nurses.

Northern Med is a very different kind of agency. Unlike most travel nurse agencies, Northern Med was founded by an RN who has over 10 years experience working as a travel nurse across Canada - our founder Matthew Jurcina. Matthew loved being a travel nurse, but after years in the industry he knew there had to be a better way; dreaming of an agency that vetted placements in-person before sending in new nurses, where staff could support you both clinically & administratively, and where quality patient-care & work-life balance were the top two priorities. ‍‍ So, in between shifts and placements Matthew started building Northern Med - eventually bringing together a dream team of staff; nurses to help with the clinical perspective, experts in healthcare administration to work with health authorities across the country, and HR pros to handle the high volume of placements and staff. The result has been Northern Med becoming one of Canada's topnotch Travel Nursing Agencies, recruiting healthcare professionals who are falling in love with nursing again!

A team you can trust.

canadian travel nurses

Community you can stand with.

If you're on your own, moving to a different community & starting a new job placement, the change can be daunting... That's why community makes all of the difference. Northern Med not only commits to finding you ideal placements - we'll also ensure you feel supported, cared for, & a part of something bigger while you're there!

canadian travel nurses

We care about patient care.

Northern Med truly cares about seeing our nurses deliver exemplary patient care . It is a top priority for our agency. We believe the best way to guarantee strong health outcomes is to take incredible care of our nurses so that they can take incredible care of their patients.

canadian travel nurses

Balance isn't just a pretty idea.

When a company tells you they value a healthy work-life balance , do they really mean it? Most often you're still left feeling guilty for requesting vacation, expressing your needs, or doing anything other than showing up for work. Well, we're done with that. Time to take back control of your life AND your career. Northern Med is here to help.

We bring everything to the table.

Our dream team is made of up an incredibly diverse and balanced group of people - with mixed professional backgrounds in nursing, human resources, business administration, and healthcare management.

Matthew Jurcina, RN

Matthew Jurcina, RN

Founder & ceo.

Our founder, Matthew began his career as an RN after receiving his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St-Francis Xavier/Cape Breton University. U.S. Travel Nurse Opportunities for Canadian Nurses

For Canadian nurses, taking travel assignments in the United States is an opportunity to expand your world with travel adventures, professional growth, and cultural exploration. Canadian travel nurses can explore different specialties, work settings, and patient groups in the diverse U.S. healthcare system. Plus, the U.S. boasts an abundance of environmental landscapes with unique blends of natural beauty, cultural significance, and outdoor adventures.

Before you start your U.S. healthcare travel adventure, there are some basic requirements you’ll need to get in place. Read on to learn more about becoming a travel nurse in the U.S.

How to Become a Travel Nurse in the United States

Here are the requirements for Canadian travel nurses to work in the U.S.:

  • VisaScreen Certificate (ICHP)
  • Passed NCLEX
  • U.S. State Nursing License TN Visa
  • Social Security Number (some states allow you to start while obtaining SSN)

canadian travel nurses

National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)

If you haven’t already taken it, you also need to pass the NCLEX exam . You need this for both obtaining licensure and getting your VisaScreen issued.

Only certain U.S. states allow you to apply without a Social Security Number. We highly recommend registering through the Minnesota Board of Nursing for your “Licensure by Examination.” Once you obtain that license, you can have other states endorse your license before entering the U.S.

VisaScreen Certificate

You’ll need to obtain a VisaScreen Certificate through the Commission of Healthcare Professionals (ICHP). This makes sure your education is like a U.S. graduate in the same field and checks your English language proficiency.

To start the process, visit the CGFNS International website for the VisaScreen Visa Credentials Assessment .

Travel Nurse Visa

You’ll also need to obtain a Travel Nurse (TN) Visa to work in the U.S. as a travel nurse. Your TNAA Quality Assurance (QA) Team is here to help! Once you pass the TNAA clinical review and submission process and secure a travel assignment, your recruiter and QA team will help guide you on submitting the required documents, including:

  • Current Canadian Passport
  • Canadian Nursing Diploma
  • Canadian Nursing License
  • S. Nursing Licensure (for the state of intended employment)
  • Original VisaScreen Certificate (issued by ICHP)
  • Nursing Job Offer
  • A letter from the U.S. employer confirming the job offer and terms
  • TNAA will provide a TN Admit Letter to verify future employment

Social Security Number

Once you book your travel assignment, the QA team can assist you with getting your Social Security Number (SSN). Certain states allow you start your assignment without an SSN, but you will need to obtain one as soon as possible. Other states require it before your assignment begins. Talk with the QA team to determine your state’s requirements and get the process started for obtaining an SSN.

Stories, stress management, self-care and social determinants of health.

The pandemic, the climate crisis, the economy, war, injustice, unrest, uncertainty – it’s a lot to cope with and we can all use support sometimes. More and more, we’re hearing and talking about wellness, mindfulness, therapy, stress management and self-care. While taking luxurious baths can feel great, self-care goes far beyond that. Self-care is quite literally taking care of yourself. Your whole self. Join CMHA for stories and strategies around what we all need to be our best selves.

About CMHA:

Founded in 1918, Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) is the most established, most extensive community mental health organization in Canada. CMHA provides advocacy, programs and resources that help to prevent mental health problems and illnesses, support recovery and resilience, and enable all Canadians to flourish and thrive. We identify and respond to Canada’s most pressing mental health priorities. At the national level, we push for nationwide system and social change. At the community level, more than a million people in Canada rely on CMHA’s extensive grassroots presence for mental health programs and services.

Angie Jurista Sympatico Medical Solutions Inc.

Angie Jurista

My name is Angie Jurista and I’m a co-owner of Sympatico Medical Solutions with Kim Kidson. We are so happy to have launched a new Travel Nursing agency that is inclusive and  professional with a flair for both travel experience and healthcare creating a work-life balance that is important for everyone. My background in healthcare began in 2014 at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC. I worked on many different units and in a few different positions including Unit Clerk, Scheduling Clerk, and Outpatient Booking in Medical Imaging.

I was able to work on the inpatient units and see how things work with all the different allied  healthcare professionals to help patients while they are admitted. I was also able to work on the  outpatient side of things when patients need to come to the hospital for their medical  appointments. With this experience, I gained an appreciation for healthcare providers and the  teams behind the scenes that support patient care.

Kim and I partnered in 2020, right after the pandemic started, with a vision to shift the Travel  Nursing industry and stand out above the rest with our passion for Travel Nursing and  supporting our frontline workers. We wanted to make sure each and every one of our team  members felt like they were part of the team and not “just a number” as felt by nurses with their  current agencies.

Fast forward 2 years and Sympatico is now a top agency with over 200 RN’s, LPN’s, RPN’s,  CLXT’s, Medical Imaging Tech’s, and Physiotherapists..... And we are still growing!  Our mission is to ensure that we are able to connect with our team members and ensure they  feel supported and confident on their Travel Nursing journey!

Province paid more than $2.5M for travel nurses to work long-term care homes

Minister says emergency situation justified paying higher wages to private agency.

Social Sharing

Travel nurses brought in to work in long-term care in 2022 earned two-to-three times more than their New Brunswick-based colleagues, the province says.

Minister of Social Development Jill Green told a legislative committee Thursday that long-term care homes were in an emergency situation at the time the department signed contracts totalling just over $2.5 million with two private companies.

Toronto-based Canadian Health Labs received almost all of that money to provide 55 staff, from February to May 2022, Green said. The company charged a rate of $9,995 for a team of 10 people on an eight-hour shift.

That works out to an average of about $125 per hour, per person, although the hourly rates of pay "are not known by Social Development," according to spokesperson Kate Wright.

In an emailed statement, Wright did say that Canadian Health Labs provided a combination of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and personal support workers.

In addition to that contract, Green said Social Development struck a $176,000 agreement with Plan A, an agency from Sudbury, Ont., for 34 staff, from February to July 2022.

Hourly wages varied under that contract with Plan A, depending on the position, Green said, with $89.50 paid to registered nurses, $59.50 to licensed practical nurses and $39.50 to personal support workers.

Those rates are notably higher than what New Brunswickers, working alongside the contract nurses, would have received at the time.

As per the province's collective agreements, hourly wages ranged from $37 to $45 for registered nurses, $29 to $32 for licensed practical nurses, and $21 to $23 for personal support workers.

The Social Development contracts are smaller than those struck by the province's regional health authorities for travel nurses, but are among those under investigation by Auditor General Paul Martin.

Opposition parties unhappy with $2.5M price tag for travel nurses

A Globe and Mail investigation found Vitalité Health Network, which oversees New Brunswick's francophone  hospitals, has awarded several large contracts to Canadian Health Labs.

Most recently, a $93-million agreement took effect on Dec. 2, 2022, and will run until February 2026, effectively charging Vitalité $306.70 an hour, per nurse.

Green told committee members the Social Development contracts were not awarded through the typical tender process.

Instead, she said, the department used an emergency exemption available under provincial procurement laws.

"There was no intent to hide anything or not speak about it publicly," she said. "As you can appreciate, with 410 [COVID-19] outbreaks that were happening at the time, it was an emergency situation."

The minister noted there were about 4,000 long-term care staff who tested positive for COVID-19 at the time.

Green was not available for an interview about the contracts with CBC News on Thursday.

Social Development does not have any current contract with private agencies, Green said in the legislative committee meeting, but added that some individual nursing homes may still be using that option.

That's because the province is not always the direct employer of long-term care staff, she said.

"We have not been entertaining any thoughts around hiring agencies like this going forward," Green said.

"We talked to a few companies, three to four, to assess who had capacity at that time. And then we went with the ones that had capacity because we were in an emergency situation."

  • N.B. nurses union seeks end of use of travel nurses, cites 'astounding' $57M cost

Opposition MLAs were not convinced by the minister's rationale for the costly contracts.

"There could have been a solution worked with the union, worked with our public service nurses," Green Party MLA Kevin Arseneau said.

"If we needed to go get out-of-province nurses, there would have been other ways to do that than to give this to private companies at incredible prices, all while undercutting our own public service. It's unacceptable as a strategy."

Liberal social development critic Robert Gauvin said the province should have spent on bonuses or other incentives for in-province workers instead.

"We have no problems spending three times as much for external workers, and yet we don't give incentive to keep the workers that are here now," he said in an interview.

The New Brunswick Nurses Union and the New Brunswick Council of Nursing Home Unions were not available for comment Thursday.

However, Paula Doucet, president of the Nurses Union, has previously called for an end to travel nursing contracts.

"Invest in New Brunswick, invest in New Brunswickers, and invest in New Brunswick nurses. And then maybe we would have a better health-care system for all," she said.
