Best Canada and New England cruise tips to help you enjoy your coastal vacation

Like every cruise destination, the Canada and New England area offers visitors a wide range of fun and exciting experiences. The region's mix of natural beauty, historical significance and modern urban culture make it appealing to both nature lovers and city types, and its convenient location is an added plus.

Even though you'll be cruising close to home, it's still important to do your research before you book your sailing. That's why we've compiled these Canada and New England cruise tips to help you choose the best itinerary and the ship that's right for you.

It's hardly a secret that cruise ports in Canada and New England offer easy access to whale watching excursions, lobster bakes and vibrant fall foliage — and if you're looking for lighthouses, rugged coastlines and active adventure, you've hit the jackpot. But there's more.

The three New England states (Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine) and four Canadian Maritime Provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec) that cruise ships call on are also full of fascinating history and culture. In one week, you can walk in the footsteps of American revolutionaries in Boston, visit the birthplace of Canada in Charlottetown on PEI and stroll the cobblestone streets of Quebec, the only fortified city in North America.

The trick is to do it all as enjoyably and seamlessly as possible. Here are 12 Canada and New England cruise tips to help make that happen.

Choose the month you sail based on your interests

Cruise season in Canada and New England is from May to October, with most ships visiting from August through October. This gives you a six-month window to cruise. Which month is best? That depends largely on what you'd like to see and do, whether you prefer warm or cool weather and the type of ship you want to book.

Visiting at the start of the season, from May through mid-June, offers generally comfortable temperatures between 60 and 75 degrees, but the weather can be unpredictable at times. On the plus side, landscapes will be vibrant green, and the region's parks and gardens will be in full bloom.

Just a few cruise lines sail here during this period, namely Holland America and MSC Cruises , so there won't be multiple ships in port to overwhelm tourist sights. However, it might be too cool, especially in May, to fully enjoy the beach and certain water-based activities.

By late June and July, summer has arrived along with several more cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean , Princess Cruises , Cunard and Silversea. This period is ideal for enjoying classic Canada and New England coastal activities, from whale watching (peak time is July to September) and sea kayaking to scenic walks and lobster and clam bakes. Early July is also when Quebec City's Summer Festival, a celebration of music and the arts, occurs.

August is a popular month for cruisers looking to hit Canada and New England's beaches, especially in Rhode Island, Maine and Prince Edward Island. Temperatures will be in the 80s during the day but cool down considerably at night. You'll find a few more cruise lines, including Seabourn , offering sailings, and another ship might be in port during your visit.

September marks the beginning of fall foliage season — the region's busiest cruise period — but most leaves don't begin to change until early to mid-October. It's crucial to time your cruise accordingly if leaf peeping is a priority. Additional cruise lines, including Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line , Viking , Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises , sail here in September and October. Temperatures, however, cool considerably by late September and can dip into the 50s and 40s by mid-October, meaning the outdoor decks will be rather chilly.

Choose the cruise line and ship based on your family dynamic

While Canada and New England ports are well suited for all ages, some cruise ships are better than others for families, couples and older travelers . Choosing the right ship for your needs is always an important consideration, but it's especially vital in New England and Canada. Why? The main reasons are itinerary length and family-friendly activities.

Canada and New England Cruises on premium and luxury lines are usually longer, often 11 to 14 nights, and feature more sea days. Onboard activities for younger cruisers are also likely to be limited, and shore excursions are generally geared to grown-ups.

On the other hand, mainstream cruise lines — such as Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises — typically pack five or six ports into a seven-night sailing. Their ships are also larger and offer lots of onboard amenities, such as kids and teens clubs, waterslides and virtual-reality gaming. These can keep younger guests entertained during one or two days at sea.

Mainstream lines Princess and Holland America do offer clubs for kids and teens, but their ships generally appeal to couples and don't have waterslides and other thrill-based activities.

Make sure the itinerary visits your must-see ports

There are about a dozen main ports on the Canada and New England cruise circuit, and most itineraries don't visit all of them. If you have your heart set on exploring Maine's Acadia National Park, make sure Bar Harbor, not Portland or Rockport, is your cruise's stop in Maine.

Want to see picturesque Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia? It's accessible from Sydney, not Halifax. And if you've heard about the dramatic tides in the Bay of Fundy, check that your ship calls on Saint John, New Brunswick, to see them for yourself.

Decide if a round-trip or one-way itinerary best suits your travel preferences

Canada and New England cruises come in two types. The first is a round-trip sailing, typically from New York or Boston, lasting seven to nine nights. These itineraries often visit five to seven ports in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island but do not sail up the St. Lawrence River to Quebec.

They offer the convenience of drive-to cruising if you live in the Northeast or mid-Atlantic. If not, major airports — John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) — are nearby should you need to fly in from around the country.

Your other option is a one-way sailing from either New York or Boston to Quebec City or Montreal — or vice versa. These cruises tend to last 12 to 14 nights and offer a more comprehensive visit to the region, calling on eight to 10 ports. Almost all are on pricier and more upscale cruise lines, although Holland America and Princess do offer some one-way itineraries lasting seven to 12 nights.

Choosing one of these sailings requires booking a one-way return flight or two one-way flights, depending on where you live.

Know which ports require you to tender

A number of Canada and New England cruise ports do not have a pier that accommodates cruise ships — or enough dock space to accommodate multiple ships. This means that vessels need to anchor offshore and guests are transferred ashore in a small boat called a tender .

Why does this matter? First, boarding a tender boat requires stepping down into and later up out of a vessel that's bobbing in the water. It isn't an option for guests who use wheelchairs or scooters and even for some passengers who are heavily reliant on walkers.

The second reason is that tendering takes time, especially on a large cruise ship carrying 3,000-plus passengers. Guests who book a shore excursion with the cruise line typically have first access to the tenders. If you plan to explore independently, you might not be able to go ashore until all guests taking shore excursions have done so. This can be an hour or more after the ship has arrived, which can cut down on your time in port and even cause you to miss a pre-booked independent tour.

If you think tendering will present an issue to you or a travel companion, check the cruise itinerary. Bar Harbor, Maine; Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts; Newport, Rhode Island; and Rockland, Maine always require a tender transfer. Docking or tendering varies by port call in Charlottetown, PEI; Saguenay, Quebec; and Sydney, Nova Scotia. Your cruise line can tell you if tendering will be required ahead of your sailing.

If you like to swim, pick a ship with an enclosed pool

Outdoor pools are perfect for tropical itineraries — and even for Canada and New England sailings in July and August — but spring and fall cruises can often be too cool and blustery for an outdoor dip. If pool time is nonnegotiable for you when cruising, look for a ship with an indoor pool or one with a retractable roof.

Cruise lines with ships sailing New England and Canada itineraries that offer these kinds of pools include Holland America, MSC Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Viking. The indoor pools on the last three, however, are adults-only.

Pack for changeable weather — and airborne pests

The key to feeling comfortable on any Canada and New England cruise is to pack as if you might experience spring, summer and fall weather in a single day — because you might do just that. Yes, temperatures in July and August, especially in cities such as Boston and Halifax, can reach the high 80s, but they can plummet quickly. Cool and foggy mornings are also common.

A good strategy is to pack coordinating layers, a sun hat, a rain jacket or poncho, and a travel umbrella. Don't forget insect repellant because the region is known for its black flies (especially from May to July), deer flies (June and July), mosquitos (June to September) and midges (June to August). Book a midship cabin if you're prone to seasickness

While the northern Atlantic waters around New England and the Maritime Provinces aren't as unpredictable as they can be in regions farther north, such as along Alaska's and Greenland's coasts, they're certainly not as smooth as those in the Caribbean or Mexico. This can be especially true from late August to October when Atlantic hurricane season can churn up waves even if the storm is hundreds of miles away.

If you're prone to motion sickness, plan ahead. Book a cabin that's located midship on a middle to lower deck because the forward, aft and top decks of ships feel movement the most. You should also pack whichever seasickness medicines or bands work best for you.

Plan a mix of shore excursions and independent exploration

The ports you'll visit on a Canada and New England cruise make it easy to mix guided excursions with DIY exploration . This flexibility will work in your favor, especially if you're traveling with independent-minded adults or kids and teens who get antsy during long tours.

Newport and Bar Harbor are both small enough to explore easily on your own. In Newport, you can plan your own visits to one or more of the picturesque enclave's landmark mansions or do the full 3.5-mile Cliff Walk. Bar Harbor's historic downtown is full of shops and galleries to browse, or you can independently book a scenic nature cruise to spot local wildlife. In season, free shuttles take visitors from Bar Harbor to key sites in Acadia National Park, so you aren't forced to take a tour.

If your ship calls on Halifax, you can buy tickets for a hop-on, hop-off double-decker bus that stops at many of the city's top sites over a 90-minute route. Charlottetown on PEI, on the other hand, is small enough to explore on foot. But if you're a fan of "Anne of Green Gables" and want to visit Green Gables Heritage Place, located about 40 minutes away, it's best to book a tour.

Perhaps the ultimate place to mix a guided tour and independent exploration is Quebec City, which was founded in 1608. Its walled Old Town is so historic that a guided walking tour offers perspective you might otherwise miss. Then you can continue to enjoy its cobblestoned charm on your own as you shop for souvenirs or duck into a cafe for a glass of wine or a cafe au lait.

Try the region's culinary specialties

One of the most enjoyable things about spending a day in port is trying the local food — and on a Canada and New England cruise, it helps if you love seafood.

In Boston and Saint John, creamy clam or fish chowder is a must, while in Bar Harbor and other ports in Maine, the go-to treat is a lobster roll followed by blueberry pie. You'll find dulse (an edible red seaweed) and Digby scallops on the menu in Halifax, while blue mussels and french fries are top must-tries in Charlottetown (FYI: PEI is Canada's top potato-growing province). Finally, when in Quebec, the snacks are poutine (french fries topped with cheese curds and drenched in gravy) and maple candy.

Make learning local history part of your daily adventures

A Canada and New England cruise offers some of the most stunning coastal scenery on the Atlantic coast, but many of its ports were also the setting for pivotal moments in Canadian and U.S. history. This makes a cruise here ideal for families with school-age kids and adult history buffs.

Newport is home to 18 historical landmarks, including the Newport Colony House (the fourth-oldest statehouse still standing in the U.S.) and Fort Adams, the country's largest coastal fortification. Your day in Boston can be spent walking the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail that connects 16 significant historic sites from the American Revolution and visiting the USS Constitution Museum.

In Halifax, you can tour the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, a star-shaped fortress that dates to 1856, and from Sydney, Nova Scotia, you can visit the birthplace of inventor Alexander Graham Bell. History comes to life on PEI, as costumed actors recreate the Charlottetown Conference of 1864 that led to Canada's unification, and Quebec City's 400-plus years of history are showcased by its impeccably preserved architectural details.

Get back to nature

What is the best time to go on a New England cruise?

Late summer and early fall is a wonderful time to go on a New England cruise. The weather is still warm and the trees are beginning to assume their brilliant fall foliage. As September progresses, the colors become more vibrant, and the evenings are cooler.

What are the main ports of call?

Ports of call on our Canada & New England cruises include Portland and Rockland in Maine; Quebec City; pretty Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island; Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Boston, Massachusetts, from where our cruises depart.

All of our itineraries include an overnight stay in Quebec City, giving you plenty of time to explore the historic center, the exciting cuisine, and the lush surrounding countryside.

Do I need a passport if my cruise stops in Canada?

Round-trip cruises from Boston to Canada are technically known as closed-loop cruises, which means U.S. citizens can join one without a passport.

This is one of the reasons why these itineraries are so popular. You can, of course, use your passport or passport card as an ID if you have one. But in the case of closed-loop cruises, U.S. citizens are allowed to enter or depart the country with proof of citizenship.

According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, this includes an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth.

The Enhanced Driver’s License allows you to re-enter the U.S. from Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean and is valid at land and sea border crossings, but not airports.

Different documentation is acceptable for minors under 16, including an original, notarized, or certified copy of their birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization. Voter registration cards and Social Security cards are not considered proof of citizenship.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, you will need a passport to enter Canada. It’s your responsibility to check the requirements, so consult your government’s website before traveling.

What should I pack?

Depending on the time of year you’ve chosen, pack for a maritime climate, which means warm, but not hot summers and mild, but not bitter winters. A light waterproof jacket is handy for the occasional rain showers. You’ll need comfortable walking shoes if you enjoy hiking—and there are some spectacular hikes in Canada and New England. Pack suitable footwear for wandering around towns, too; many in this part of the world have cobblestone streets.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. 

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual. 

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. 

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What kinds of excursions are available?

We offer a wide range of excursions to suit every taste, whether your interest is history, the great outdoors, food, art, or all of these. From Halifax, visit quaint Peggy’s Cove and learn about the tragedy of the Titanic. Sydney, Nova Scotia is where you’ll see magnificent scenery along the spectacular Cabot Trail. In Charlottetown, take a tour in a horse-drawn carriage.

Foodie Portland is the place to join a culinary stroll and then walk it off on the Eastern Promenade Trail. In Quebec, meanwhile, you could join a guided walking tour, visit dramatic Montmorency Falls, and spend an evening at the Sugar Shack to enjoy folklore and local cuisine.

How long are these itineraries?

Our Canada and New England itineraries are either 10 or 11 nights long, and all sail round trip from Boston, Massachusetts.

What kind of weather should I expect?

Late summer in Canada and New England brings still-warm temperatures and sunny days. September is, for example, a wonderful month to visit Maine and Quebec City, with fewer visitors, low rainfall, and bright days. 

October is the time to visit to see the fall colors in their full glory, the trees decked out in dazzling crimson, ochre, burnt orange, and yellow. Evenings are cooler by now, but part of the fun is wrapping up warm and enjoying the crisp air.

What is there to do on the ship?

There’s no shortage of entertainment on our stylish, contemporary ships. Relax by the pool, or in the balmy Solarium on cooler days. Join a fitness class or unwind in the spa. Enjoy dining al fresco at the Mast Grill, and elegant evenings in the beautiful Main Restaurant, where you’ll find regionally inspired and international menus designed by a Michelin-starred chef. Evenings are packed with entertainment, from glittering shows to comedy, quizzes, dancing, and live music.

Walk Among Founding Fathers

Boston is one of the oldest cities in the country, and it has the historical landmarks to prove it. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile walk filled with all of the rich New England history that you read about in books. You'll see the meetinghouses, churches and burial grounds that were integral parts of forming the United States.

Fenway Is the Fun Way

Bring a bag of peanuts to a baseball game at Boston's famed Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox since 1912. The Fenway Park is one of the main attractions in Boston. If you're more of an art enthusiast than a sports fan, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum are both nearby.

New England and Canada Cruises: What To Expect On Your Sailing

S ailing through the serene waters on New England and Canada cruises aboard Holland America’s Zaandam was like living a decade-long dream. The spellbinding landscapes, historical touchstones, and every seafood connoisseur’s delight across eight memorable days truly symbolized the essence of cruising for my friend Angie and me.

Revel in our tale where modern comforts aboard our magnificent vessel met the allure of discovery at each port.

Here’s what our itinerary looked like:

• Day 1: Embark in Montreal, Quebec
• Day 2: Quebec City, Quebec (9 hours in port)
• At Sea Day 3
• Day 4: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island  (9 hours in port and tender required)
• Day 5: Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia (8 hours in port)
• Day 6: Halifax, Nova Scotia (8 hours in port)
• Day 7: Bar Harbor, Maine (10 hours in port and tender required)

Note : A tender is when the cruise ship has to dock away from the pier (primarily due to shallow water), and smaller boats (lifeboats) take passengers to the shore from the cruise ship.

A Magnificent Embarkation in Montreal

The vacation was simple: leave our suitcases at the door of  Le Centre Sheraton Montreal Hotel , a hotel offered by Holland America at a discounted rate, and they’d magically find their way onto the Holland America Zaandam ship. 

Our first stop was  Aloha Espresso Bar  for our caffeine fix, and later, we went to  Crêperie Chez Suzette  for a mushroom/asparagus crepe so tasty that I nearly teared up. Seriously, this may have been the best crepe I ever ate. Montreal has cool shops with fun trinkets, clothing, accessories, and Canadian merchandise, so consider buying souvenirs here.

Our eyes feasted on Montreal’s grandeur, from Rue de la Commune’s majesty to Basilique Notre-Dame’s grace. However, time fenced us from  Château Ramezay ‘s historic whispers; the reenactors against a backdrop of 18th-century gardens painted enough of a picture for our imaginations. 

Navigating Montreal’s roads and streets required patience. Take heed, fellow travelers, for phone GPS glitches can ply your path with unintended adventures, mainly if French is as foreign to you as it was to me. When in doubt, tradition triumphs; hailing a tried-and-true taxi cab was our golden ticket back to the hotel from Old Port.

Sashing Through Romantic Quebec City

Quebec City unveiled itself through “Stroll Through Quebec City & Tea at Chateau Frontenac,” a tour worth its weight in gold at $79.95 (these are old prices; be sure to verify current ones before booking). Our tour lasted three hours.

The cobblestone narrative unfurled tales of New France’s roots, while the fun (no pun intended) Old Quebec City Funicular spirited us between Lower and Upper Towns (Haute-Ville to the Basse-Ville) in a whimsical style. In Lower Town, we visited Place Royale and le Quartier Petit-Champlain , the first shopping street in North America.

Tea at  Chateau Frontenac  was an indulgence we wished lasted an eternity, with sweet treats beckoning for more time in Quebec City’s charming arms. A tip for fellow explorers: carve out time before your tour for that extra shopping.

Quebec City is gorgeous. I would love to come back here on a land trip. 

Relaxing At-Sea Day

Our single day at sea allowed Angie and me some onboard fun and relaxation in spades. Sleeping in, playing trivia, and an occasional outing to the casino balanced perfectly with rejuvenating spells in the Thermal Suite, featuring the hypnotic hydrotherapy pool and aromatic saunas.

The highlight of the Thermal Suite is the heated mosaic lounges where you can relax and watch the ship navigate through the ocean waves.

Then came Afternoon Tea, a traditional delight on Holland America that transformed scones into experience and my favorite thing to do on the cruise ship. Sea days usually offer more sweets and finger sandwiches than in-port days, so try both.

Our at-sea day transcended beyond the vessel’s offerings. It was an opportunity to steep ourselves in calm through reading, the gentle buzz of the onboard shops, and chatting with fellow cruise passengers’ friendships.

Cruising with Holland America isn’t just about the destinations; it’s also about weaving a tapestry of moments – tranquil, exciting, and unforgettable. Whether you’re shore-bound or basking in the onboard ambiance, each day is an adventure waiting to unfurl.

An Adventurous Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Day

We embarked on the “Island Drive & Anne of Green Gables” excursion on our voyage with Holland America. The price was $79.95 for a 3.5-hour tour. Stops included the picturesque Cavendish Beach and Confederation Bridge before reaching the cherished  Anne of Green Gables Museum . 

Surrounded by the buzz of fellow literary enthusiasts, we experienced a vibrant taste of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel come to life. It was a special visit for me as this has been my mother’s favorite story since she was young.

Though our museum visit was quick, akin to being herded swiftly through an enchanting literary world, it was offset by a tasty box lunch included in the farewell. A stop at the French River followed, boasting pristine white beaches contrasting the lush farmland—a frame-worthy scene deserving of any traveler’s camera roll.

A Stroll Through Old Sydney Town 

Our third Holland America excursion, “Walk Through Old Sydney Town,” led us on a historical promenade for just $39.95. Over two hours, we breathed in the legacy of Cape Breton at St. Patrick’s, Cape Breton’s oldest Roman Catholic Church, and absorbed the echoes of history at Jost House.

While the sights whispered tales of yesteryear settlers, this leg didn’t stir my soul, and it’s not often I don’t love every cruise port. Nevertheless, our cruise companions spurred envy with tales of their Fortress of  Louisbourg National Historic Site  adventure.

Earlier that morning, Angie and I took our own tour through the shopping part of town and saw some fun murals and stores. We had a killer cinnamon roll from  Selkie’s Neighbourhood Diner  and Italian soda at  Doktor Luke’s , then quickly dashed into The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse to taste the local cuisine. 

If you aren’t dying to do one of the excursions offered, get off the ship and walk through town. It is the best (and free) option. I love that our New England cruise included so many Canadian ports.

Halifax Highlights

Our Halifax exploration offered back-to-back adventures. The all-day hop-on/hop-off bus tour ($59.95) unfolded the city’s character in 90 minutes per loop. Angie and I soaked in the verdant allure of the Halifax Public Gardens , an ode to horticultural artistry and beautifully manicured grounds. Amid historic sites and maritime lore, the bus tour guide was our knowledgeable beacon.

Ventures off the bus at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Halifax Citadel, and Public Gardens were open to all explorers, not just those from our cruise. The proximity of the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market to our dock presented a treasure trove of gourmet bites and local trinkets, a brief stroll revealing the heart of maritime commerce.

Tip for travel companions with mobility considerations:  Halifax unrolls a carpet of joy for every visitor.

Peggy’s Cove & Titanic Memories

My emotions regarding the “Peggy’s Cove & Titanic Combo” tour waver. Costing $64.95 for 3.5 hours of clock-watching hurry, it did spare us the ordeal of self-planning. The pilgrimage began at Fairview Lawn Cemetery, a solemn tribute to the lives claimed by the RMS Titanic tragedy. One hundred twenty-one of them are buried here.

Hindered by a current sinkhole near the cemetery, we navigated challenging rolling hills to pay from where the bus parked our swift respects to history’s lost souls. All in all, we only had five minutes at the actual gravesites.

At  Peggy’s Cove , rustic fishermen’s dwellings and granite shores on the Eastern coast of St. Margarets Bay welcomed us. Though the mist played coy with our cameras, Peggy’s Cove’s allure remained steadfast. And though you can only photograph it, not go inside, it is the most photographed setting in Eastern Canada. 

Be sure to pick up some souvenirs at the gift shop, browse the local artists’ booths around the village, and grab a bite of sweets from the local eateries.

Tip : Take caution, as rogue waves are known to hit at any time, and the rocks can be incredibly slippery. 

Beautiful Bar Harbor, Maine

As a seasoned cruiser, I’ve experienced an array of voyages, but our finale at Bar Harbor, Maine, aboard Holland America’s Canada and New England cruise, became an unexpected highlight. Delving into Bar Harbor was like unwrapping an unassuming gift only to find a priceless treasure inside – why did I wait so long to explore this corner of Maine?

Nestled just a stone’s throw from the pier, Bar Harbor exudes enchantment with its quaint storefronts set amidst a landscape dotted with vibrant floral displays and picturesque spots, which quietly beckon to pause and capture a moment. Local boutiques and restaurants add to the allure.

Indulge in the local delight of blueberry ice cream, churned to perfection and offered in several spots around town. It’s a regional treat not to be missed, crafted from berries as fresh as the ocean breeze.

Adventure beckons right at your doorstep in Bar Harbor – no need for curated tours. My friend Angie and I chose to weave our own path through the area’s fabric. With an Enterprise car rental secured (conveniently picked up with their courtesy shuttle service), we set out to engrave our visit in the pages of our National Parks Passport with a self-guided trip through the majestic  Acadia National Park .

Our exploration led us through the serene beauty of Frenchman Bay, unveiling sights of eagles and cormorants taking flight. We ascended the paths of Acadia, making frequent stops to take hundreds of pictures.

At Cadillac Mountain, the world unfolded in a breathtaking 360° spectacle of nature’s splendor, while Jordan Pond offered a blend of delectable dining and tranquil trails.

Our drive unveiled Bar Harbor’s opulent Victorian mansions and introduced us to Ellsworth, a charming artery leading to Acadia’s heart. Here, amid the stunning scenery, we savored what could only be described as lobster roll nirvana at the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound .

Cruise New England: A Bucket List Completed

Reflecting on my Canada and New England cruising experience, I’m grateful to Holland America for making it effortless to immerse in the diverse offerings – from selecting daily delights to choosing intriguing shore excursions.

This voyage wasn’t just a means to satisfy a travel itch; it was the fulfillment of a long-held aspiration—a hearty thanks to Holland America for creating such an educational and lesser-known itinerary.

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.

It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.

Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?

A passport isn't always required for cruising.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

• The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

• Passport card
• State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
• Government-issued birth certificate
• Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
• American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

• Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
• Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
• Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

• Voter registration cards
• Social Security cards
• Baptismal papers
• Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.

Many eclipse visitors to northern New England pulled an all-nighter trying to leave

FRANCONIA, N.H. (AP) — Thousands of visitors to northern New England communities in the path of the total solar eclipse were told to pack their patience for the trip. In some areas, they needed it for up to 12 hours after the event started, inching their way back home on packed interstates and secondary roads.

In New Hampshire, travelers were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic in the northern part of the state through at least 2 a.m. Tuesday, clogging up southbound Interstate 93. Southbound traffic on Interstate 89 also was heavy Monday evening. Southbound traffic was backed up in parts of Maine for several hours.

New England had clear skies and mild weather Monday, making for ideal viewing conditions for totality. In New Hampshire, people flocked to places such as Lancaster, Stewartstown, Colebrook and Pittsburg, near the Canada border.

But the roads were swarmed on the trip back, and traffic came to a standstill in some areas.

“People were just pulling over on the side of the road going to the bathroom, people were pulling over to shut their cars off, sleeping in their cars all over (U.S.) Route 3,” said Scott Lacourse, who left his vacation home in Pittsburg with his wife and their two dogs at 6:30 p.m. They got home to Londonderry, New Hampshire, nine hours later. That’s nearly three times longer than usual.

“Every rest area, any pull-off, anything, was full,” Lacourse said, adding that there also was no cell service.

Some people who had paper maps with them navigated their way through back roads. Others were running out of gas, and some broke down. Some people opted for the dangerous maneuver of driving across a median ditch and turning back onto northbound lanes. At least one car got stuck in the ditch. Some people who tried to stop for fast food along the way were met by a long line and the realization that the staff had stopped taking orders.

Lacourse and his wife, Sirena Holobinko Bogdahn, thought that if they left later in the day traffic would be cleared, but that wasn’t the case.

In spite of that, “it was well worth it,” she said of the eclipse viewing. “It was so amazing.”

John Martin, who was visiting from Massachusetts, described it as a “creep and a crawl” near Franconia, where Route 3 feeds into the Franconia Notch Parkway, a one-lane mountain pass in each direction, before expanding into the multilane interstate.

“You’re looking at your GPS trying to get off of 93 to find something a little quicker, and everybody else was thinking the same thing,” he told WMUR-TV.

New Hampshire state officials had warned travelers that the return could be slow going and encouraged people to stay in the area, which usually sees its most tourists during the summer and the fall foliage season, for a while.

“To our friends visiting from out of state, remember: there’s no sales tax in NH, so feel free to stay a bit longer!” Gov. Chris Sununu had said Friday.

Traffic also slowed to a crawl in other states.

In Maine, the traffic on Route 4 south from Rangeley to Farmington was heavy and slow several hours after the eclipse but never completely stopped, averaging 8 to 15 mph for much of the 40-mile drive along the two-lane rural road that threads mountains and hills.

In Paducah, Kentucky, which was in the path of totality, along with communities to the west in Illinois, thousands of people crossed the Ohio River after watching the eclipse. Post-eclipse traffic also moved very slowly in places such as southbound Interstate 65 in southern Indiana, and along southbound Interstate 81 in New York and Pennsylvania.
