The King has begun his first overseas visit since his coronation, travelling to Romania for a private solo stay in the country’s Transylvanian region.

Charles is taking a break from official engagements in the UK but will begin his trip with a formal bilateral meeting with Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis in the capital Bucharest.

He spoke of his ‘love’ for Romania, and said during the 25 years since he first visited the country, he had come to love ‘the culture and art, your heritage and history, your sweeping landscapes and priceless biodiversity’.

President Iohannis was a guest at the King’s crowning on May 6 and the two men sat down for talks during the Cop26 UN climate summit hosted by Glasgow in 2021.

It is not known how long Charles will spend in Romania, but he is expected to visit the country’s Transylvanian region where he has a number of properties.

Charles told the guests: ‘As I have said before, I have come to love Romania – your culture and art, your heritage and history, your sweeping landscapes and priceless biodiversity, this “tara de gloria, tara de dor” (country of glory, country of longing), if I may paraphrase your national poet, Mihai Eminescu.

‘Romania has retained, in its ancient forests, pristine countryside, and through some remarkable examples of sustainable farming, an incomparable richness of nature.

‘But most of all, I cherish my Romanian friends here. I am enormously grateful to many people in this audience for their kind help on so many occasions, and for their support for projects which are doing so much good in communities throughout the country.’

The King has developed a close relationship with Romania, a country he first visited in 1988, and last year he travelled to Bucharest to tour a donation centre for Ukrainian refugees and chatted to those who had fled the Russian invasion of their homeland.

In 2015 he established the Prince of Wales’ Foundation Romania, which offers heritage preservation training courses to both local people and international apprentices.

He owns a number of properties in Romania’s Transylvania region, including a holiday let – which helps fund the foundation – and a 17th century peasant’s house, which acts as the foundation’s headquarters, both in the village of Viscri.

The King is thought to be related to a well-known figure from Romanian history, Vlad the Impaler – said to be the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

His links to the infamous leader are through his great-grandmother Queen Mary, the consort of George V, who was descended from the German Wurttembergs and thereby linked to the bloodthirsty Vlad.

Charles’s trip began with the visiting head of state being welcomed by a guard of honour at the Cotroceni Palace in the capital before his meeting with President Iohannis.

Romania’s president will later host a reception in the King’s honour in the palace’s Union Hall to mark the 25th anniversary since his first visit to the country.

The King was formally welcomed to Bucharest with a Guard of Honour at Cotroceni Palace this afternoon before undertaking a bilateral meeting with President Iohannis. During a reception, he delivered a speech reflecting on his deep love for and connection with Romania, where he owns carefully restored guest accommodation that he retreats to regularly.

“I can scarcely believe that twenty-five years have gone by since my first visit to this most remarkable country, although even before I came here I felt a deep connection to Romania,” the King said. He added, “I have come to love Romania—your culture and art, your heritage and history, your sweeping landscapes and priceless biodiversity…Romania has retained, in its ancient forests, pristine countryside, and through some remarkable examples of sustainable farming, an incomparable richness of Nature.”

While Charles’s visit to Romania is not unexpected at this time of year, it happens to fall just as Prince Harry is due to arrive in the UK for a very public appearance. Harry will become the first British royal to appear in the witness box in more than 100 years when he gives evidence and is cross-examined at the High Court in his phone hacking claim against Mirror Group Newspapers next week. The case is one of a number of lawsuits that Harry has brought against British media organizations. In an interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby he described “changing the media landscape within the UK” as being his “life’s work.”

Transylvania gears up for King Charles III's first post-coronation visit

Valea Zălanului (Romania) (AFP) – After being received with military honours at the Romanian capital Bucharest, Britain's Charles III on Saturday visits Transylvania -- a region the king has said is in his "blood" as a descendant of Vlad the Impaler.

Issued on: 03/06/2023 - 08:28 Modified: 03/06/2023 - 08:26

The king has frequently praised the charms of picturesque Transylvania in central Romania, where he has bought several traditional houses and set up a heritage foundation.

A long-time environmental advocate with a passion for nature, Charles has called Transylvania "literally the last unspoilt, untouched area".

As part of his first overseas visit since he was crowned king on May 6, Charles is headed to the village of Valea Zalanului -- some 100 kilometres (60 miles) away from the hamlet of Viscri, where he is expected to wrap up his trip on Tuesday.

As prince, King Charles first visited Viscri a quarter of a century ago, in 1998.

Dan Spataru from the local mayor's office said his return to the region was being welcomed as an "emotional gesture".

But in contrast to earlier visits, his trip as a newly crowned king will take on a "more formal, official" nature amid heightened security.

"We are sorry because the atmosphere was more relaxed before. Now it's a little stiffer," Spataru said of the tightened security protocol in place.

"Until 10 years ago Charles would walk around, go inside the villagers' courtyards, discover, without someone protecting him," said local guesthouse-owner Alexandru Toader.

"Now he can no longer do that because every time he comes it is highly publicised," he added.

The 37-year-old said in the past few weeks, authorities have even questioned him about the guests he was about to receive as part of security protocols.

'Soul connection'

Charles bought his first house in Viscri in 2016, attracted by the region's dirt tracks, horse-drawn carriages and brightly-coloured houses nestled in green hills.

Initially intended as an occasional princely residence, it was later transformed into a museum dedicated to botany -- another of the new king's lifelong passions.

In Bucharest the royal environmentalist praised Romania for still being "home to many species of flora and fauna that have disappeared or are threatened elsewhere in Europe and the world."

Under Charles' sponsorship, the Mihai Eminescu Trust foundation has renovated several properties in Transylvania with traditional methods and materials to preserve the heritage.

Caroline Fernolend, president of the Mihai Eminescu Trust, told AFP that about 200 locals are expected to welcome Charles at the UNESCO-listed fortified church on Tuesday.

"It will be a unique moment to receive a king in our community," she said, grateful that Charles honours the work done "all these years".

Fernolend says there is no need to spruce up the village in anticipation of the king's visit.

"We won't prettify anything, the beauty is already there," she said, adding that the value of Viscri lies in its "people and the existing heritage."

At the reception in Bucharest on Friday, Charles said he has "always felt rather at home in Romania" in a reference to his links to infamous Vlad the Impaler through his great-grandmother Queen Mary.

According to Spataru, the king has always had a particular "soul connection" with Transylvania.

"When he comes here, he unwinds, he smiles more -- he is no longer the official, rigorous man," he said.

‘A deep connection’: Charles travels to Romania on first foreign trip since coronation

King Charles met President Iohannis in Romania, a country he has developed a strong relationship with since his first visit in 1988

The King has arrived in Bucharest for the start of a visit to Romania, his first foreign trip since the coronation. He is staying in the country’s Transylvanian region, where he has a number of properties, but is also carrying out a small number of official engagements.

The King is travelling without the Queen, who is understood to be spending some time at her home in Wiltshire.

His trip began with a formal meeting with Klaus Iohannis, Romania’s president, in the capital.

President Iohannis was a guest at the King’s coronation on May 6 and the two men sat down for talks during the Cop26 UN climate conference hosted by Glasgow in 2021.

The King , who is expected to be in the country for less than a week, has developed a close relationship with Romania, a country he first visited in 1988. Last year he travelled to Bucharest to tour a donation centre for Ukrainian refugees and spoke to people who had fled the Russian invasion of their homeland.

In 2015 he established the Prince of Wales’s Foundation Romania, which offers heritage preservation training courses to both local people and international apprentices. He owns properties including a holiday let — which helps fund the foundation — and a 17th-century peasant’s house, which acts as the foundation’s headquarters, both in the village of Viscri, Transylvania. He is expected to spend some of his time hiking in the hills , which are known for their spectacular wildflower meadows.

The King is said to be distantly related to Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century ruler who is said to be the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula . His links to Vlad, who earned his nickname from his favourite method of execution, are through Queen Mary, his great-grandmother and the wife of George V, who was descended from the German Wurttembergs and linked to the bloodthirsty Vlad.

The King received flowers from locals after he arrived at his estate in Viscri

Charles’s trip began with a welcome by a guard of honour at the Cotroceni Palace in the capital before his meeting with Iohannis. In a speech at a palace reception hosted by the president to mark the 25th anniversary of Charles’s first visit to Romania, the King said he had always felt a “deep connection” to the country even before he had been there. He spoke of his family’s connections — his great-grandfather George V was first cousin of Queen Marie of Romania — and told how he first visited the country because he felt “deeply” for what Romanians had been through since the Second World War.

He added: “I have come to love Romania — your culture and art, your heritage and history, your sweeping landscapes and priceless biodiversity . . . Romania has retained, in its ancient forests, pristine countryside, and through some remarkable examples of sustainable farming, an incomparable richness of nature.

“This is still home to many species of flora and fauna that have disappeared, or are threatened elsewhere in Europe and the world, which makes it all the more precious. But most of all, I cherish my Romanian friends here. I am enormously grateful to many people in this audience for their kind help on so many occasions, and for their support for projects which are doing so much good in communities throughout the country.”

King Charles III will be recovering from the coronation celebrations by unwinding in his secret retreat in rural Transylvania next week.

According to the Daily Mail , the home is a stripped-back former farmhouse in a cosy hamlet in Zalanpatak, Romania, close to the Carpathian Mountains . The King is understood to have purchased the property several years ago.

Queen Camilla will not be joining him on his annual visit, leaving the 74-year-old monarch to enjoy some “R and R” during the first year of his new role.

The property is rented out to visitors, with double rooms for an all inclusive-stay starting at £140 per night, in between King Charles’s annual visit to the region.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain last week (22 May), royal expert Jennie Bond said that the King will be visiting the retreat in the coming weeks to recuperate from his coronation.

She told the programme that the King has laid an “ecological” water treatment plant at the residence and “loves it there”.

“He sleeps in a little wooden bed, he’s going there for a very short stay next month,” she added.

The hideaway is surrounded by hills and meadows of the Zalan Valley, frequented by wolves and bears.

There is no wifi, TV or radio, but the drawing room now has a “small hi-fi player with CDs”.

But the property is far from a “man cave”, with seven double rooms with en-suite bathrooms in three heritage cottages, each furnished with authentic Transylvanian antiques and textiles.

A fourth building has a drawing room and dining area with a large open fireplace and a comfortable sitting area on a landing above the kitchen.

It is understood that the King wishes to encourage “more people to visit Transylvania” and “promote sustainable development”, according to the official website for the guesthouse.

There was some doubt as to whether the King would make his annual visit for 2023, but it is reported that he will arrive in early June and stay for a week.

Britain's King Charles III will visit Romania in June, the eastern European country's prime minister said Tuesday.

Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca said the newly crowned king would meet government officials, including President Klaus Iohannis, who attended Charles' coronation in London this month.

"We are part of the programme," Ciuca told reporters when asked to confirm media reports that Charles would visit on June 2.

He gave no further details.

Local media reported that Charles would also travel to the remote region of Transylvania.

The village of Viscri in that picturesque region won the heart of the then prince Charles when he first visited in 1998.

The house he bought there in 2006 was initially an occasional princely residence but has been transformed into a museum dedicated to botany, another of the new king's passions.

Under Charles' sponsorship, the Mihai Eminescu Trust foundation has renovated several properties in Transylvania with traditional methods and materials to preserve the heritage.

Charles claims descent from a 15th-century prince known as Vlad the Impaler, the historical inspiration for Bram Stoker's "Count Dracula". He has even said that Transylvania is "in my blood".

King Charles will go on a hiking vacation in Romania

K ing Charles III's (74) first trip abroad since his coronation will reportedly be a walking vacation in Romania. According to 'The Sun' the British monarch will fly to the country, where he owns at least ten properties, in June.

Romania's President Klaus Iohannis (63) will officially welcome King Charles to his official residence, Cotroceni Castle in the capital Bucharest, according to reports. However, according to the report, the trip will largely be a short vacation. Queen Camilla (75) is reportedly not going.

Regular visits to Romania

Charles often visits Romania, in the months of May or June, according to the Sun. He reportedly enjoys hiking or painting near, his home in Viscri, a town in Brasov County in the Transylvania region. According to the report, he once said of the countryside in Romania, "There is a sense of ancient continuity here. A positive cycle where man and nature are in balance." There is reportedly no radio or television in his home there.

After the coronation, on May 6, King Charles and Queen Camilla took a few days off in Sandringham, Norfolk. This year, according to British media reports, the royal couple still has an official joint trip to Kenya. According to the 'Daily Mail', he is expected to travel to the East African country to make the Commonwealth an even greater focus of his reign. It is said to be a milestone for his political orientation.

A state visit by Charles and Camilla to France, postponed in the spring, is also expected to be made up in the summer. For the first time in 45 years, The Sun reported, the monarch is said to have canceled his annual ski trip to the Swiss Alps in March because he feared he might injure himself before the coronation.

King Charles is reportedly visiting Romania soon.

House of King Charles in Romania’s Viscri village opens new visiting season with Barry Lewis exhibition

The House of King Charles III in Viscri, the famous village in Romania’s Transylvania region, reopened for a new visiting season. The reconverted barn of the traditional Saxon property hosts, for the first time in Romania,  The Darkness Within, Copșa Mică 1988 – 1995  exhibition of British photographer Barry Lewis.

This is the second exhibition of the British photographer at the house in Viscri, reopened this season under the name The King’s House, after the series of unique photographic portraits of some Romanian artists exhibited here in the fall of 2023.

The new temporary exhibition brings to the public a selection of 42 photographs taken during the photographer’s visits to the area both before 1989 and in subsequent years.

Barry Lewis recalled: “I returned to Transylvania on January 6, 1990. It was a harsh, freezing winter. I knew things had not changed for the better when a few miles from the town the colour of the snow changed from white to grey and I met some shepherds with their blackened flock. The source of the darkness was 7 great missile-silo-sized filters to protect the people from pollution, but these filters were in a state of disrepair. Here, the people were black, the snow was black, the houses were black, the children were black, and nothing would grow in the black fields for miles around. As I walked on the frozen crust of blackened snow, each footprint left a white impression, a sort of negative shadow and I felt myself entering a surreal world where everything was turned on its head.”

Through his photographs, Barry Lewis captures the desolation and resilience of the town’s residents amidst the darkness cast by Carbosin and Sometra factories, the organizers said. His work, later featured in Life magazine and honored with the prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack Award, sheds light on the human cost of industrial neglect and serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring struggle for environmental justice in post-revolutionary Romania.

“Seeing the entire photographic archive made by Lewis in Romania in the 90s, I was moved by the images made in Copșa Mică. The reality captured by these photographs was far beyond what I had imagined from the stories I had heard about the black city, giving me the conviction that such truths hidden in communism must be revisited as often as possible so as not to be forgotten or repeated. We owe it to those who lived in the dark for 60 years and were largely abandoned after the closing of the polluting factories,” said Raluca Grigore, curator for The King’s House.

The exhibition was curated in collaboration with the photographer Ionuț Macri.

The house in Viscri is open to the public until the end of October and continues to host the book and floral art exhibition  The Transylvania Florilegium , as well as the permanent exhibition  Preservation of historical roof coverings , made in partnership with the Monumentum Association and The King’s Foundation.

More than 38,000 Romanian and foreign tourists visited the king’s house in 2023.

According to Mihai Grigore, administrator of The Kings’s House in Viscri, most profits generated by the house go directly back into the community.

“From these funds, this year we will cover part of the costs of cleaning the village, protecting it from car traffic and printing tourist maps. A large part of the funds goes to the projects for the children in Viscri: the little gardeners will have the opportunity to travel to England to visit His Majesty’s gardens there, and the village cycling team will have part of the costs of equipping and training for competitions covered. And last but not least, this spring, more than 100 saplings of traditional pear varieties were planted on the streets of Viscri to continue this tradition specific to the Saxon villages,” Grigore said.

In the house’s gift shop, visitors can find a selection of products from local artists and artisans.
