Borussia Dortmund round off USA tour with Chelsea draw

Borussia Dortmund continued their unbeaten run of pre-season results with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea to conclude their summer tour of the USA.

Chelsea 1-1 Dortmund Goals: 0-1 Wolf (80'), 1-1 Burstow (89') Edin Terzic's side came into this game following a 6-0 win over San Diego Loyal and a 3-2 success against Manchester United in Las Vegas , but they were on the back foot for most of the first half here. Former RB Leipzig attacker  Christopher Nkunku , who joined Chelsea over the summer, was lively down the left early on but had to be taken off midway through the half with an injury. Marcel Sabitzer impressed with his range of passing, including some stunning switches of play from right to left, but BVB didn't threaten the Chelsea goal before the interval. The Premier League outfit had a cluster of decent opportunities towards the end of the first 45, but a combination of good saves from Alexander Meyer and wayward finishing from Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson left the game goalless at the midway stage. The tempo increased considerably in the second half, perhaps helped by the inevitable swathe of substitutes eager to impress their bosses, and after Dortmund youngster Samuel Bamba flashed a shot wide of the post, Ramy Bensebaini was called to block a shot on the line when Carney Chukwuemeka seemed certain to score from eight yards. It remained end-to-end and Terzic's side looked to be on course for victory when Marius Wolf scored from close range late on, tapping in Bamba's shot from outide the box, but Chelsea equalised in the last minute through Mason Burstow's well-placed header.

Chelsea have announced their 29-man squad ahead of the pre-season tour of America. The Blues and their head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, depart for the United States ahead of matches against Wrexham, Brighton, Fulham and Borussia Dortmund.

Having sold or released more than ten members of their first-team squad from last season, Chelsea are taking a young group of players with them to America as they prepare for the 2023/24 season under new management. Summer signings Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku have been included in the touring party, as have a host of young stars.

Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Armando Broja and Marcus Bettinelli were all left out with injuries being assessed while recovery is planned. Reece James reported as ill and did not travel out of precaution, the club say.

Chelsea have welcomed back a group of returning loanees ready to prove their worth to Pochettino and the Argentine has granted them a chance to impress. Levi Colwill, Ian Maatsen and Andrey Santos have all been selected for the tour while Callum Hudson-Odoi has been left out.

The winger spent last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen and failed to make the desired impact. He is now set for a move away from the club with Fulham and Nottingham Forest amongst the interest clubs. Elsewhere, there was no place for Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The trio are all surplus to requirements and had been granted extra time away from Cobham in order to find a move away. Lukaku has been at the centre of the most attention with large wages to shift and a hefty price tag still on his head. The Belgian isn't expected to be part of Pochettino's plans next season but has so far been unable to find a new home.

Inter have now reportedly dropped out of the running for him, leaving Juventus of a move to Saudi Arabia on the cards. Ziyech himself was close to a transfer to the Saudi Pro League before issues in his medical delayed such a deal.

Badiashile misses out with the hamstring injury he picked up towards the end of last season. football.london understands that Badiashile is targeting the star t of the new campaign for when he returns to action as he continues to do gym work behind the scenes at Cobham to ensure just that.

There was no room for fellow Under-21 starlet Omari Hutchinson or Harvey Vale as they miss out on selection with the expectation that both players find a loan to aid their development. Cesare Casadei has been given a chance to show himself to Pochettino in action despite heavy links to Leicester.

Academy duo Bashir Humphreys and Alfie Gilchrist are in the group after training for the past fortnight in Surrey, as Malo Gusto following his own return from loan at Lyon in the second half of the season.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Eddie Beach is included in the squad. football.london understands the Blues have decided to keep the youngster around the first team before assessing his situation in January .

Goalkeepers: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Gabriel Slonina, Eddie Beach, Jamie Cumming, Lucas Bergstrom,

Defenders: Thiago Silva, Malo Gusto, Alfie Gilchrist, Bashir Humphreys, Ben Chilwell, Marc Cucurella, Ian Maatsen, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill

Wrexham’s ‘U.S. Invasion’: Ryan Reynolds cut-outs, The Turf on Tour and 50,000 fans

Wrexham’s ‘U.S. Invasion’: Ryan Reynolds cut-outs, The Turf on Tour and 50,000 fans

Wrexham ’s party on their first outing in the U.S. may have been spoiled by a resounding Chelsea victory .

But when it came to spreading the Welsh gospel across North Carolina, the League Two club proved more than equal to the two-time Champions League winners in the one-upmanship stakes.

Chelsea boast their own ambitious owners. But it was cardboard cut-outs of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney that adorned the entrance to an open training session in Carey, with not a Todd Boehly in sight as fans flocked to take their photos next to the Hollywood pair.

Then there was the pop-up version of The Turf, the pub that sits in the shadow of the Racecourse Ground, welcoming fans to the Kenan Stadium on Wednesday evening rather than Frankie’s Sports Bar or any of the other watering holes that supporters pack on a west London matchday.

If there were any lingering doubts as to just how big a deal this club from north Wales has become across the Atlantic then Turf landlord — and Welcome to Wrexham breakout star — Wayne Jones posing for photos with fans next to the Chapel Hill version of his pub as the temperature gauge nudged up towards the mid-30s Celsius surely puts those to bed.

As, to be fair, should the huge pre-match queues snaking towards the entrance of the fanzone set aside for supporters of the League Two club with not-so-subtle banners proclaiming ‘ Wrexham USA Invasion 2023′.

“It is brilliant to experience,” says Elliot Lee , the midfielder whose 12 goals played such a key role in Wrexham’s promotion to the EFL last season. “We landed (on Sunday) and wandered (into Chapel Hill) an hour later.

“People were coming up and welcoming us to North Carolina, telling us how they were all Wrexham fans. We just don’t get to see that side when back home.”

chelsea us tour results

Kenan Stadium, usually home to the North Carolina Tar Heels gridiron team, vividly illustrated the popularity Wrexham currently enjoy in North America. Sure, there were thousands of Chelsea shirts on display in the sell-out 50,596 crowd, as the locals took another chance to watch live a club who had twice previously played down the road in Charlotte.

But there were plenty of pockets of red on display, too, for a game that was broadcast live to almost 100 countries. Yet another indication of the tremendous impact made by a documentary that is broadcast on FX in the States and Disney+ in the UK.

“The fans have bought into this story like you wouldn’t believe,” says Ben Foster , the former England international who came out of retirement to re-join Wrexham last March.

“I was on holiday in Mykonos just a couple of weeks ago. It was weird, because there weren’t any English people due to it still being term-time in the schools back home. But there were a lot of American people.

“The amount of Americans coming up to me in the street and saying, ‘Wow, we absolutely buzz off that Wrexham documentary’ was phenomenal. Even then, though, I don’t think I had a grasp of it.

“Rob and Ryan would tell us how it had taken hold of people out there. But it’s only now we can see that for ourselves.”

  • A chance to grow ‘mindblowing’ support and push turnover towards $26m
  • Wrexham’s former CEO – from covering costs on credit card to flying fans to U.S.

For a brief spell as the 1970s morphed into a new decade, Wrexham and Chelsea were footballing bedfellows thanks to three seasons together in the old Second Division that included a trio of incredibly tight FA Cup ties inside 10 days.

After that, Chelsea moved to another footballing stratosphere and can lay claim to being the most successful Premier League team of the past two decades thanks to two Champions League triumphs, five league titles, two Europa Leagues and the 2022 Club World Cup.

Wrexham, meanwhile, were going nowhere fast until the arrival of Reynolds and McElhenney in February, 2021. Since then the club has been transformed, with turnover expected to top £20million ($25.9m) for the first time in the 2023-24 season .

Compared to the financial behemoth that is Chelsea, such a sum is a mere drop in the ocean. Hence the surprise in the UK when a first friendly between the two clubs since 1984 was announced in April.

That sniffy attitude was not evident across the Atlantic, as tickets were quickly snapped up along with every hotel room in host town Chapel Hill to provide a boost to the North Carolina economy local tourism chiefs put in the $20million (£15.5m) bracket .

Fans from all 50 states in the U.S. bought tickets, with many of those travelling long distances to get a first glimpse of Wrexham.

Brock Bender made a 620-mile round trip from his home in Augusta, Georgia. Even his car conking out on the morning of the trip couldn’t deter him.

“I had to rent a car,” he says. “I’ve just had the call (from the garage) and it’s not looking great for the car. Last rites time, I think!”

The reward for such a Herculean effort was a chance to join fellow fans from a WhatsApp group who had never met before.

“We’re all on Twitter,” he adds. “All using the #AskWxm hashtag during the games at first and then getting in contact with each other. Fifteen of us have just met up in the pub. One of the guys has come from Florida.

“Everyone has the same story. We watched the documentary and were hooked straight away. The first game I watched live on the TV was Blyth Spartans away (last season’s FA Cup tie shown live by ESPN in the United States).

“After that, I listened to all the games via Mark Griffiths and the club commentary team . That really helped me feel connected to the team. At first, you do feel like you’re intruding on something special. This community has been with the team forever.

“But everyone has been so warm and welcoming to all of us. To now have a chance to see these guys play live is massive. I had to be here.”

Brock was among around 4,000 fans who took in training the day before the big game, as both sets of players were put through their paces at the impressive WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.

Here, fans had the opportunity to take photos with those cardboard cut-outs of Wrexham’s Hollywood owners and mingle with the players.

Matt Stoner, the self-styled president of the Mark Howard fan club, joined wife Michelle and sons Kyle and Jace behind the goal where Wrexham’s back-up goalkeeper trained alongside Foster and Rob Lainton .

“I’ve been a soccer fan all my life,” says Matt, who lives just down the road in Benson, North Carolina. “I loved the show and even managed to get my wife to watch it through Ryan Reynolds.

chelsea us tour results

“Being from Pennsylvania, I could identify with Rob’s story. I’m a huge (Philadelphia) Eagles fan as well. What I really like about soccer — and the Wrexham story — is how the team can rise and fall. We just don’t have that here, though there is now talk of the USL (Championship, America’s second tier) introducing promotion and relegation . That would be great.”

Wrexham have never quite had a pre-season like this. Just four years ago, the warm-up to a new campaign featured games against Curzon Ashton, Cefn Druids and Telford United. There was also a trip to Fleetwood Town that was played at the League One club’s training ground.

Nothing wrong with that, it should be stressed. These fixtures can be a Godsend to the finances of local non-League clubs, while plenty of EFL promotion campaigns have been built down the years on a similar July schedule.

But, facing Chelsea — and next week Manchester United in San Diego — really is taking the club to the next level commercially.

For Phil Parkinson, moving up to the next level in a footballing sense is the challenge. He will have been pleased with some of what he saw, particularly in the first half when Wrexham were fielding what was effectively the same starting XI as the promotion-clinching win over Boreham Wood.

Only Ryan Barnett was missing from that never-to-be-forgotten day in April, the right-wing back slot instead going to Anthony Forde .

chelsea us tour results

Ian Maatsen , wanted by Burnley but priced at £20million , was Wrexham’s chief punisher with two exquisite finishes at the start and end of the first half. But, in between those goals, the League Two side performed well, causing Chelsea problems as Paul Mullin ran the channels impressively and Lee displayed some fine touches in midfield.

Parkinson had changed his entire line-up with half an hour to go, five making way at half-time before the rest followed on 60 minutes. The upshot was a game being shown live in the States and S4C in the UK losing some of its fluency, even allowing for how Mauricio Pochettino brought on England international trio Raheem Sterling , Ben Chilwell and Conor Gallagher .

Ollie Palmer did go close with a header but Lucas Bergstrom ’s smart save meant any chance of a fightback had gone, goals from Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku and Chilwell in the closing stages making it 5-0.

“Playing in front of 50,000 was a great occasion,” says Parkinson. “It was a tough ask in just our second outing of pre-season but there were positives. We worked very hard and had chances against a very good team.”

As the pop-up version of The Turf started to come down at the final whistle, along with the ‘Wrexham USA invasion’ banners, the players’ time in North Carolina was all but over. Judging by the ovation at the final whistle, they won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

Next stop, Los Angeles and Hollywood.

Pochettino: Leaving Chelsea wouldn't be 'end of the world'

Find the biggest stories from across the soccer world by visiting our Top Soccer News section and subscribing to push notifications.

Mauricio Pochettino said "it would not be the end of the world" if he leaves Chelsea at the end of the season as the Argentine boss hinted he could quit the Premier League club.

Pochettino has been under fire for much of a difficult first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

With speculation lingering that he could be sacked by Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly, Pochettino took the opportunity to emphasise that he has a say in his future as well.

The former Tottenham manager said he was not unhappy at Chelsea, but reiterated that he needed to have a conversation with the club's hierarchy at the end of the campaign.

Speaking ahead of the trip to struggling Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Pochettino said: "If we are happy then it's perfect, but it's not only if the owners are happy because you need to ask us also because maybe we are not happy and we need to split.

"It would not be the first time a coaching staff decided to not keep going. Tomorrow I could say 'I am going to leave'.

"It's two parts if they make a decision and it's not only if Chelsea are not happy, the owner is not happy, the sporting director is not happy.

"Maybe we are not happy because we arrived here with a job to do, but in the end it's not what we expect. I am not saying I am not happy. If we split it's not a problem, it will not be the end of the world."

Boehly has already axed Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter since his consortium bought Chelsea in 2022.

The American offered hope to Pochettino when he talked up Chelsea's recent progress at an event in the United States earlier this week after they leapfrogged Manchester United into seventh place.

Pochettino believes it is good for everyone at the club to hear the public support of the ownership.

"I think he described the reality, I think Todd has always been good with us and even in the tough moments he was very positive," he said.

"To go public now and if the owner is happy then it's much better for the club, for the fans, for the players and for the owners also."

Jeered by fans after several dismal results this season, Pochettino still needs a strong finish to the campaign to bolster his stock.

And successive Premier League wins against Tottenham and West Ham have put Chelsea in contention for a European spot.

Pochettino, asked when he would meet with club chiefs, said he had already been involved in planning the club's pre-season tour.

"We have had some meetings and meetings to organise next season and of course working in the future," he said.

Several big Premier League teams, including Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and both Manchester sides, have previously announced similar American tours. In all, half of all current English top-flight clubs will make the trip to the States this summer.

The inaugural 2024 Stateside Cup trophy will feature a three-game tournament between Palace, West Ham, and Wolves. Each team will play each other once and the matches are set to take place in Florida and Maryland. West Ham and Wolves will start the competition on July 27th in Jacksonville, Florida. Palace will then face Wolves four days later in Annapolis, Maryland. The mini-tournament is set to conclude as West Ham takes on Palace on August 3 in Tampa, Florida.

Palace, West Ham both have ownership ties to the US

Palace has direct ties to the U.S. due to American investor John Textor’s 45% stake in the club. The Eagles recently played a pair of summer friendlies in the States just last summer. Textor’s team previously faced off against Colombian side Millonarios in Illinois before then playing Sevilla in Detroit.

While the South London side flirted with potential relegation earlier this summer, head coach Oliver Glasner has the club back on track. Palace’s form has skyrocketed recently thanks to big wins against Liverpool and Manchester United. Glasner has his team playing attractive soccer, while also not losing a match in over a month.

The Hammers also have an American connection as well. Tripp Smith, born in Indiana, currently holds an 8% stake in the east London club. The team last made the trip across the pond in 2016 but will make their first appearance in Florida later this summer.

West Ham currently finds themselves in the top half of the Premier League table under manager David Moyes. Nevertheless, team brass is likely to make a managerial change, meaning their next coach could debut in America.

Wolves have interesting history here in the States

Wolves may not have current ownership ties to the U.S., but they certainly have a lengthy history Stateside. The West Midlands side last played a match in America 43 years ago. However, the club previously helped compile one of the teams for the United Soccer Association (USA) back in the 1960s. The American Wolves collected the league’s title in 1967, the division’s sole campaign. A documentary was recently released regarding the story of the club’s triumph.

Despite financial issues, Wolves are set to complete a fairly respectable season thanks to the help of coach Gary O’Neil. The club currently sits 12th in the table, safe from potential relegation. O’Neil was brought into the team at a time when management was just hoping to remain in the English top flight.

Fans can purchase tickets to all three Stateside Cup matches on the tournament’s official website starting on Monday, May 13 at 10 a.m. ET. Each team involved is handling a pre-sale for their own specific matches.

West Ham fans can register now for the early event. Official Palace supporter group members can access the pre-sale on Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m. ET. Wolves fans can also grab seats in specific areas of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium by using the code EPLNavy on their website .

LONDON (AP) — Chelsea routed West Ham 5-0 in the Premier League on Sunday to boost its chances of qualifying for Europe next season.

Nicolas Jackson scored twice at Stamford Bridge as Mauricio Pochettino’s team moved up to seventh in the standings and two points behind sixth-place Newcastle.

The win maintained Chelsea’s impressive recent scoring run at home, taking its total to 22 goals in the last six league games in front of its own fans.

“It’s true last season was tough for everyone here and to turn the feelings and performance this season is difficult,” Pochettino said. “We needed time for everyone to trust in the process and we have recovered good feelings at Stamford Bridge.”

Chelsea was 3-0 up at halftime after Cole Palmer scored his 26th goal of the season in all competitions in the 15th minute. Conor Gallagher volleyed in a second in the 30th and Noni Madueke headed in the third six minutes later.

Jackson scored in the 48th and 80th minutes to take his season’s tally to 16 and three in his last two games.

The victory meant Chelsea recorded back-to-back league wins for the first time since January.

The loss for West Ham means it is likely to miss out on Europe, with the result leaving David Moyes’ team in ninth, five points behind Chelsea, with only two games remaining this season.

Pochettino at ease about Chelsea job status. Not ‘end of the world’ if he leaves

LONDON (AP) — Mauricio Pochettino says it’s “not going to be the end of the world” if he’s not back at Stamford Bridge next season.

The first-year manager of seventh-placed Chelsea added that it’s not just club chairman Todd Boehly who will have the final say.

“If we are happy, perfect, but it’s not only if the owners are happy or the sporting director is happy,” Pochettino said Friday at a news conference ahead of their English Premier League game at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. “You need to ask us also.

“Maybe we are not happy because we arrived here with a job to do, but in the end it’s not happened, what we expect.”

Smiling, the Argentine coach added: “I don’t say that I am not happy.”

Back-to-back wins have Chelsea seventh in the league, trailing sixth-placed Newcastle by two points and in contention for a European spot.

The Blues have been inconsistent for most of the season, Pochettino’s first at Stamford Bridge.

Boehly, speaking at a Sportico conference in Los Angeles this week, praised the team’s “beautiful football” of recent weeks as being “exactly the way we drew it up.”

A relaxed Pochettino said Friday that he’s not worried.

“(If) we split it’s not a problem, it’s not going to be the end of the world.”
