Right from the crescendo that welcomes you in before it drops away into an atmospheric landscape, the voice at its centre so quietly intense he may as well be singing inside your own head, Christian Kjellvander's new solo album undeniably feels like a big record. The seven songs on this gently unhurried long-player are allowed to build and meander, make unexpected turns or even pause to look over their own shoulder before moving on, four of them ending way beyond and one just shy of the seven-minute-mark. It comes as a bit of a shock then to learn that this sound that ranges from almost-silence to unbridledly expressive, widescreen hugeness was created mostly as live by a minimal three-piece line-up in a Stockholm studio basement: - Per Nordmark on drums - Pelle Anderson on a Fender Rhodes, a Prophet 5 and a Korg Prologue - Christian Kjellvander on vocals, guitars and whatever came to hand, adding just a touch of bass at the end of two songs. Every week, I receive several hundred music releases (albums, EPs and singles together) through various platforms. I can’t really explain what the exact selection process for the reviews of each weekend is. Finally, folk musician Christian Kjellvander and his new album Hold Your Love Still  made it. I simply liked it at first sight (or: listen). Thus, I share his 3rd November 2023 release with you. Enjoy!

Christian Kjellvander – About The Artist

Christian Kjellvander is a 1976-born Sweidsh singer-songwriter. Since the 1990’s until their split in 2001, he was part of the Loosegoats, an alternative country band.  Until then, the band released four EPs and three albums. Additionally, there was a comeback album i 2012. Since 2002, Kjellvander is releasing solo music. Especially in the mid-2000’s, he was very popular in Sweden, having two Top 10 album releases. His most recent album, About Love and Loving Again , however, was his first album which did not make it to the domestic album charts at all.

The eight song album lasts 45 minutes.

1. Western Hemisphere

I wanna give you this and ask for nothing in return are the first words of the album. Hopefully the Swedish artist receives some more on his future tour dates . Being admired fan love and good sales at the merch, maybe?  Western Hemisphere  leaves quite a mark in my mind. An almost threatening sound with quickly, but monotonously scrummed guitars and choir-alike backing vocals. The album opens in style with a lot of spirit.

2. Notes From The Drive Between Simat And Alcoi

The first seconds of the second track feel to connect to the opener, but the song quickly creates a much more positive feeling. The sound of  Notes From The Drive Between Simat And Alcoi feels like a dark U2 melody to me. The song is about the struggle of trying to be perfect. Great listen.

3. Baleen Whale

The third song is very metaphoric. He compares the 2020’s man with a whale who is relentlessly receiving nutrition through his baleen. This “nutrition” are bad news, other people’s problems and are somehow poisonous. The song is in line with that – a very hard, thoughtful, intense one. Great songwriting.

4. Terns Took Turns

Even when Kjellvander is singing about love, you don’t get rid of this dark, heavier character. The almost five minute songs works with very intense sounds and thus also spreads some magical feeling.

5. Disgust For The Poor

There are no light songs on this album – and the title of the fifth song likely makes you guess what it is about. The Swedish artist criticizes the modern capitalistic and consuming society. The almost screaming vocals stay in your mind, together witth the very clear messages of the song.

6. One Wine And Jesus Christ

The album closes with three long and epic songs. The first one,  One Wine And Jesus Christ deals with consuming alcohol and if you can drink alcohol without being in constant threat about its downsides. The melodic arrangement feels like a dark and deep jazz song. Very personal write.

7. We Are Gathered

The press kit states that this nine minute track  leads the listener to an hypnotic state . Indeed, the mash-up and the climax of the album feels very intense and spiritual. The song is extremely impressing and comes with a scary finale with a stomping crescendo. It is even a bit too hard to digest for me.

8. Dream 2066

The last 7:21 minutes of the album are taken by  Dream 2066 . The song is an utopia of a better world, which has survived all problems like climate change and natural catastrophes.  I whistled as I went to the old town . The album closes in a worthy and dignified style.

I am really grateful to receive albums like this before release date. If I had them a few days before, they would likely not make the cut, don’t receive the album they deserve. Christiam Kjellvander wrote a very social-critic and impressing eight song musical beauty – I have been really fascinated by it.

Naked but for a soft blanket of reverb, Christian Kjellvander’s tender voice invites us into his latest creation, the swooning ‘Hold Your Love Still’. His first solo album since 2020’s ‘About Love And Loving Again’ finds the Swedish troubadour in a reflective mood, exploring the difficulties of an honest life amid the entanglement of capitalism, and imploring us to nurture that faltering hope for a better tomorrow. Though he’s grappling with existential and environmental tensions, Kjellvander strides from stoicism to optimism, augmenting his trademark minor melancholy with soaring major compositions, each concise, precise and considered – a conscious turn towards song from the freeform expressions of recent collaborations. Rich in natural imagery, understated poetry and an infectious empathy, with meaning imbued in every line, this is the work of an accomplished songwriter at his most vital.

For Christian, the love of the album title is a state of energy or a concentration of feelings, an ineffable quality which he sometimes feels is missing in modern society. Dewy opener “Western Hemisphere” affirms that everything we need is already in our grasp; we just need to stay still long enough to see it. A grounded celebration of the power of nature, this is a reminder that the long grass has more beauty than the manicured lawn. Our preoccupation with perfection also informs “Notes From The Drive Between Simat and Alcoi”, a travelogue from South-Eastern Spain inspired by breathtaking valleys, a Cistercian monastery and the comforting distortion of a well used sound system. Recalling a gig in Alcoi, a town famed for its labour movement even as the world’s pickets fall hushed, Kjellvander rejoices in the jagged countryside, weathered stone buildings and buzzing speakers, protesting the straight lines and clean sound of our commercialised existence as the song builds from ballad to anthem.

“Baleen Whale” compares the accumulated weight of watching the news or internalising the troubles of others with a filter-feeding whale, which eventually finds itself beached. Set to the steady rhythm of rumbling bass and brush drums, delicate piano and sombre strings create a melancholy backing for Kjellvander’s tale until a sudden swell of hopeful chords carries the chorus aloft. Four songs in and Christian fashions his love into a love song, examining intimacy and vulnerability on the gorgeous “Terns Took Turns”. Not only does he capture the moment of surrender to overwhelming affection, but also the kind of closeness which allows communication without words.

The cinematic and stomping “Disgust For The Poor” delivers a dissection of capitalism, consumerism and continued colonialism and questions whether we can do more to make a difference while enjoying all the comforts of an unfair system. Intoxicating and imagistic “On Wine And Jesus Christ” sees Kjellvander realise a longstanding desire to explore his relationship with alcohol, recalling the ways in which he’s used it, and it’s used him, on his way to a healthy enjoyment of the holy feeling it can bring.

The sparse and stately “We Are Gathered” stretches its languid groove over nine minutes, weighing the balance of the album’s thematic thrust and marrying accountability with optimism. As the piece spirals out into a mostly instrumental ending, a delicate solo floats above the solemn groove before boldly untethering into a crescendo of rolling snare and staccato guitar. The optimism extends to the pastoral and placid psychedelia of closer “Dream 2066”, a reassuring vision of a possible future free from climate disaster and the clutches of capitalism. Kjellvander’s comforting croon leaves us with a lasting message of the power of togetherness. A fitting finale to a faultless LP, this is an affirmation that it’s not too late to make a change, and that some of us might have come to that realisation earlier than others.

Von einem zarten Schleier des Halls umgeben, eröffnet uns Christian Kjellvander mit seiner sanften Stimme die Tür zu seinem neuesten Werk "Hold Your Love Still“ – sein erstes Soloalbum seit "About Love And Loving Again" aus dem Jahr 2020. In dieser Schaffensphase zeigt sich Kjellvander von seiner reflektierenden Seite und erkundet die Herausforderungen einer aufrichtigen Lebensführung, verstrickt in den komplexen Einflüssen des Kapitalismus. Gleichzeitig fordert er uns dazu auf, die Hoffnung auf eine bessere Zukunft nicht zu verlieren. Das Album beschäftigt sich mit existenziellen und umweltbedingten Spannungen, wandelt jedoch gekonnt zwischen Stoizismus und Optimismus. Er bereichert seine charakteristische melancholische Stimmung mit schwebenden Kompositionen in Dur, die jeden Song zu einem tiefgründigen Erlebnis machen. Die Liebe, von der im Albumtitel die Rede ist, ist ein Zustand der Energie bzw. eine Konzentration von Gefühlen, eine schwer zu beschreibende Qualität jedenfalls, die er gelegentlich in unserer modernen Gesellschaft vermisst. Das erfrischende Eröffnungsstück "Western Hemisphere" bestätigt, dass alles, was wir brauchen, bereits in unserer Nähe liegt; wir müssen nur lange genug stillhalten, um es zu erkennen. Das Stück feiert die Kraft der Natur und erinnert uns daran, dass das hohe Gras mehr Schönheit besitzt als der noch so sorgfältig gepflegte Rasen. Auch "Notes From The Drive Between Simat and Alcoi“ hat das in unserer Gesellschaft so verbreitete Streben nach Perfektion zum Thema. Es ist ein Reisebericht aus dem südöstlichen Spanien, inspiriert von atemberaubenden Tälern, einem Zisterzienserkloster und der beruhigenden Verzerrung eines ziemlich maroden Sound-Systems. Darin erinnert Kjellvander sich an einen Auftritt in Alcoi, einer Stadt, die in den Anfängen der Arbeiterbewegung im 19. Jahrhundert eine zentrale Rolle gespielt hat, auch wenn Streikposten ihre Stimme heutzutage nur noch im Flüsterton erheben. Kjellvander bringt seine Freude an zerklüfteten Landschaften, verwittertern Gemäuern und brummenden Lautsprechern zum Ausdruck und äußert zugleich seinen Protest gegen die schnurgeraden Linien und den sauberen Sound unserer kommerzialisierten Existenz. Unterdessen entwickelt sich das Stück von der Ballade zur Hymne. In dem Song "Baleen Whale" geht es um die Belastung durch die ständige Überflutung mit Nachrichten oder auch die fehlende Abgrenzung gegenüber den Problemen anderer Menschen. Christian zieht daher den Vergleich zu einem Wal, der unablässig Nahrung durch seine Barten filtert und schließlich strandet. Ein rumpelnder Bass und Schlagzeugbesen bilden das rhythmische Gerüst, während das zarte Piano und düstere Streicher einen melancholischen Hintergrund für Kjellvanders Geschichte bilden, bis schließlich ein unerwarteter Schwall aus hoffnungsträchtigen Akkorden den Refrain in ungeahnte Höhen hebt. Im vierten Song des Albums, dem wunderschönen „Terns Took Turns“, webt Christian seine eigene Liebe in ein Liebeslied ein, in dem er sich mit Intimität und Verletzlichkeit auseinandersetzt. Er fängt in diesem Stück nicht nur den Moment der Hingabe an das überwältigende Gefühl der Zuneigung ein, sondern auch jene Nähe, die eine Kommunikation ohne Worte erst möglich macht. Das sehr plastische, von einem stampfenden Rhythmus begleitete „Disgust For The Poor“ liefert eine schmerzhaft präzise Analyse des Kapitalismus, des Konsumismus und des fortgesetzten Kolonialismus. Gleichzeitig stellt es die Frage, ob wir ein ungerechtes System wirklich verändern können, während wir gleichzeitig all die Annehmlichkeiten genießen, die es uns bietet. In dem berauschenden und phantasievollen „On Wine And Jesus Christ“ verwirklicht Kjellvander dann ein lang gehegtes Vorhaben und erforscht seine Beziehung zum Alkohol, erinnert sich daran, wie er den Alkohol und wie dieser ihn benutzt hat. Ist es möglich, Alkohol zu genießen, ohne gleichzeitig seinen Gefährdungen zu erliegen? Das Album erreicht seinen Höhepunkt in dem epischen und fesselnden Track "We Are Gathered", der eine neunminütige Reise darstellt, die die Albumthematik geschickt mit Verantwortungsbewusstsein und Optimismus verbindet. Die Musik entführt den Hörer in einen hypnotischen Zustand, während die Melodien und Klänge sich zu einem beeindruckenden Crescendo entwickeln. "I want to give you this and ask for nothing in return." Surrounded by a delicate veil of reverb, Christian Kjellvander's gentle voice opens the door for us to his latest work, "Hold Your Love Still" - his first solo album since 2020's "About Love And Loving Again." In this creative phase, Kjellvander shows his reflective side, exploring the challenges of living a sincere life, entangled in the complex influences of capitalism. At the same time, he urges us not to lose hope for a better future. The album deals with existential and environmental tensions, but skillfully walks between stoicism and optimism. He enriches his signature melancholic mood with soaring compositions in major keys that make each song a profound experience. Each song is precise and thoughtful - in contrast to the musical boundary pushing that characterized his last works, he now performs a conscious turn to song. The lyrics are full of natural imagery, subtle poetry and fascinating empathy. This is the work of a seasoned songwriter at his best. The love referred to in the album title is a state of energy or a concentration of feelings, a difficult quality to describe anyway, which he occasionally misses in our modern society. The refreshing opening track, "Western Hemisphere," confirms that everything we need is already within our reach; we just need to hold still long enough to recognize it. The piece celebrates the power of nature and reminds us that the tall grass has more beauty than the lawn, no matter how carefully manicured. "Notes From The Drive Between Simat and Alcoi" also has as its theme the pursuit of perfection so prevalent in our society. It's a travelogue from southeastern Spain, inspired by breathtaking valleys, a Cistercian monastery and the soothing distortion of a rather decrepit sound system. In it, Kjellvander recalls a performance in Alcoi, a town that played a pivotal role in the early days of the labor movement in the 19th century, even if picketers only raise their voices in whispers these days. Kjellvander expresses his delight in rugged landscapes, weathered walls and humming loudspeakers while voicing his protest against the dead-straight lines and clean sound of our commercialized existence. Meanwhile, the piece evolves from ballad to anthem. The song "Baleen Whale" is about the stress of being constantly inundated with news or even the lack of detachment from other people's problems. Christian therefore draws the comparison to a whale that ceaselessly filters food through its baleen and eventually strands. A rumbling bass and drum broom provide the rhythmic framework, while the delicate piano and somber strings form a melancholic backdrop for Kjellvander's story, until finally an unexpected surge of hopeful chords lifts the chorus to unimagined heights. In the album's fourth song, the beautiful "Terns Took Turns," Christian weaves his own love into a love song in which he explores intimacy and vulnerability. He captures in this piece not only the moment of surrender to the overwhelming feeling of affection, but also that closeness that makes communication without words possible in the first place. The very vivid "Disgust For The Poor," accompanied by a pounding rhythm, provides a painfully precise analysis of capitalism, consumerism and continued colonialism. At the same time, it questions whether we can truly change an unjust system while enjoying all the comforts it affords us. In the heady and imaginative "On Wine And Jesus Christ," Kjellvander then realizes a long-held ambition and explores his relationship with alcohol, remembering how he used alcohol and how it used him. Is it possible to enjoy alcohol without succumbing to its dangers at the same time? The album reaches its climax in the epic and captivating track "We Are Gathered," which is a nine-minute journey that cleverly combines the album's theme with a sense of responsibility and optimism. The music transports the listener into a hypnotic state as the melodies and sounds build to an impressive crescendo. With the closing song "Dream 2066", Christian Kjellvander presents us with a reassuring vision of a possible future free from climate catastrophes and the shackles of capitalism. His comforting voice leaves a lasting message about the power of community and cohesion. Admission: 7:00 pm
