What's new

  • Revives the Voyager name from the now-defunct Plymouth brand
  • Replaces base and fleet trim levels of the Chrysler Pacifica
  • No notable changes from the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica L and LX
  • Launches the second Voyager generation under the Chrysler brand and fifth Voyager generation overall

Here's a Throwback Thursday we didn't see coming. Chrysler is rebranding the lower trim levels of its Pacifica minivan with an old-school name from its past. The 2020 Chrysler Voyager dusts off a nameplate from the defunct Plymouth brand that dates back 45 years and was last seen about 15 years ago when it quietly disappeared as — wait for it — the Chrysler Voyager.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2020 Chrysler Voyager L 4dr Minivan (3.6L 6cyl 9A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.49 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Despite the retro name dust, the Voyager is really just the first two trim levels of last year's Pacifica. There are minor feature changes here and there, but effectively it's the same enchilada. That means you get plenty of space for passengers and cargo, a classy-looking cabin, capable acceleration, and even useful towing capability of up to 3,600 pounds.

Reviving the Voyager nameplate is a curious choice, and we suspect it has more to do with the impending discontinuation of the old Dodge Grand Caravan than a detailed plan of selling a ton more minivans under the Chrysler brand. As a shopper, all you need to focus on is the end result. The Voyager is a solid minivan and its pricing is attractive, but it can't quite match the Honda Odyssey for overall refinement.

Which Voyager does Edmunds recommend?

2020 chrysler voyager models.

The base L trim comes with essentials such as a rearview camera, cloth seats, a second-row bench seat (for seven-passenger seating), a folding/collapsible third-row Stow 'n Go bench seat, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 7-inch touchscreen.

The LX trim adds more comforts, including softer suspension tuning, a power-adjustable driver's seat, second-row captain's chairs, three-zone climate control, and satellite radio. Several safety features (blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert) come with the optional SafetyTec package for both trims, while a roof rack, remote start, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are options for the LX.

2021 Chrysler Voyager Performance Review

The 2021 Chrysler Voyager offers well-rounded performance, with a strong engine, a silky ride, balanced handling, and good gas mileage.

  • Performance 7.8

2021 Voyager Photos

2021 Chrysler Voyager Angular Front

  • "In our testing, the Pacifica managed a 7.3-second zero-to-60-mph time and we expect similar (but possibly faster since it carries fewer features and potentially lighter as a result) times from the Voyager." -- Car and Driver
  • "It is the spitting image of the Pacifica inside, outside and from the driver's perch. That's not a bad thing." --  Autotrader (2020)
  • "The Voyager uses Chrysler’s 3.6-liter V6 engine that makes 287 horsepower. That’s very competent in this class -- slightly more powerful than the Honda Odyssey and slightly less than the Toyota Sienna." --  Kelley Blue Book (2020)

Engine Options, Horsepower, and Acceleration

  • Engine: 3.6-liter V6 with 287 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque
  • Drivetrain: front-wheel drive
  • Transmission: nine-speed automatic

The V6 powering this Chrysler is strong enough to hold its own in regular driving, both in the city and on highway. Acceleration comes relatively quickly too.

  • "The V6 engine provides ample power, so getting up to freeway speeds is stress-free." -- Autotrader
  • "So how does it drive? Pretty much like a regular Pacifica. The Voyager is still powered by the same 3.5-liter V-6 engine that makes 287 hp. The engine delivers power quickly, and the Voyager feels light and eager to go." --  Motor Trend (2020)
  • "It shouldn't be a surprise that the new Chrysler Voyager minivan drives much like the Pacifica. Both share the same powertrain: A V6 engine connected to a 9-speed automatic transmission. With 287 horsepower, the engine offers good power for everything from quickly pulling out of the school drop-off line to merging onto freeways." --  Kelley Blue Book (2020)

MPG Estimates

The 2021 Voyager gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which is good for a minivan .

Handling and Braking

The Voyager has a plush ride, and its suspension helps the van ride smoothly over most flaws in the road. This Chrysler also handles well and keeps its composure around turns.

  • "The cabin is quiet, and the ride quality is comfortable, especially in the LX trim with its Touring-tuned suspension." -- Autotrader
  • "… the Voyager drives just as you'd expect – and how most parents would desire: smooth, quiet and comfortable." --  Kelley Blue Book (2020)
  • "It … drives like a big sedan, has plenty of get up and go, and is seriously comfy." --  Autotrader (2020)

  • Verdict This no-frills minivan may not provide a lot, but it's got you covered where it counts.

What's New for 2020?

The Voyager joins Chrysler's lineup for 2020, but we hesitate to call it "new." This seven-passenger minivan draws its name from a long-dead Plymouth model and everything else from the Pacifica.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2020 Chrysler Voyager starts at $28,480 and goes up to $31,290 depending on the trim and options.

Unless you're prepared to go with the barest-boned minivan on the market, we recommend you look at the LX. While neither trim provides much in the way of amenities, the LX at least offers a more compliant suspension tune than the L as well as automatic headlamps, aluminum wheels (instead of steel), three-zone manual climate control, and superior exterior lighting. Plus, if you want options such as remote start, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, satellite radio, and/or a built-in DVD player to entertain the kiddos, the LX is the only way to go.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Mechanically, the Voyager is identical to the Pacifica, using the same 287-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine and nine-speed automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. In our testing, the Pacifica managed a 7.3-second sprint to 60 mph. Given this van forgoes some of the features that weigh down its brother, the Voyager likely weighs less than the Pacifica and thus has the potential to beat that time. Don't hold your breath for a hybrid. Chrysler will reserve that powertrain for the pricier minivan in its lineup.

2020 chrysler voyager side

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

We haven't had the opportunity to test the Voyager on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy loop, but for reference, the last nonhybrid Pacifica we tested achieved 31 mpg. The Chrysler vans both earn EPA estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The Voyager's 22 mpg combined score betters those of the Kia Sedona and Toyota Sienna and matches that of the Honda Odyssey , all chief competitors.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As with the exterior styling, powertrain, and chassis, the Voyager's interior mimics that of the Pacifica, albeit with fewer creature comforts. You won't find leather seats, in-dash navigation, automatic climate control, or power-sliding side doors here. What's more, the Voyager provides Stow 'n Go capability only for the rear bench seats. If you want the second row to fold into the floor, you'll need to shell out at least $35,540 for the base Pacifica. You can, however, tuck away valuables in the underfloor cubbies in front of the captain's chairs if you opt for the LX trim. Behind the third row, the Voyager boasts the same 32 cubic feet of cargo volume as the Pacifica. So while we have yet to put this van through our practical space tests, we feel safe saying that the Voyager will be able accommodate what its brother could (i.e., 12 carry-on suitcases with the rear seats up).

2020 chrysler voyager interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

Chrysler provides a 3.5-inch digital display in the gauge cluster, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the center stack, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a six-speaker audio system with active noise cancellation. Either trim level provides Bluetooth streaming and integrated voice control, but only the Voyager LX allows for SiriusXM radio. Need to entertain the little ones? A rear-seat overhead DVD player can be had on the LX for $995.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

The Voyager achieved a five-star rating —the highest possible—from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in each of its crash-test measures. Chrysler attributes the van's crashworthiness, at least in part, to the abundance of high-strength steel in the Voyager's body structure. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has yet to test the Voyager, but the Pacifica performed well in most areas . Looking for driver-assistance features ? You won't find many in the Voyager and nothing of the like is offered as standard. Key safety features include:

  • Available rear parking sensors with rear automated emergency braking
  • Available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Chrysler's warranty coverage is fairly typical for the class. The Sienna offers more value here in the form of a two-year/25,000-mile complimentary scheduled maintenance plan.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Cluster diagnostic code question

  • Add to quote

I checked my cluster today when I got home and found diagnostic codes 100.3 (EATX Communication Fault) 100.5 (ORC Communication Fault) 100.6 (SBEC/DEC/MCM Communication Fault) 400.1 (Improper Shutdown Detected) I know what the EATX is, and the 400.1 has always been there. I don't know what the other two codes are. I have noticed that, with the AC on and the engine idling, the van has died once, and almost died twice. I also had an accessory short out and blew a fuse (plugged into the front DC port) My question is, what do the fault codes 100.5 and 100.6 mean? And is it possible that any of the other occurrences are related? To clarify, I also did the key dance to check for power train codes, and that came back clean. My vehicle: 2002 Chrysler Voyager eC, 2.4L, 4spd Auto, 194k miles and counting

Have you tried resetting the cluster? .. "ACTUATOR TEST The instrument cluster actuator test will put the instrument cluster into its self-diagnostic mode. In this mode the instrument cluster can perform a self-diagnostic test that will confirm that the instrument cluster circuitry, the gauges and the indicators are capable of operating as designed. During the actuator test the instrument cluster circuitry will position each of the gauge needles at various calibration points, illuminate each of the segments in the Vacuum-Fluorescent Display (VFD) units, and turn all of the indicators ON and OFF again. Successful completion of the actuator test will confirm that the instrument cluster is operational. However, there may still be a problem with the CAN or LIN data bus, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), the Controller Antilock Brake (CAB), the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC), the compass module, the Wireless Ignition Node (WIN), the Steering Wheel Switch Module (SWSM), the Steering Control Module (SCM) or the inputs to one of these electronic control modules. Use a diagnostic scan tool to diagnose these components. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information. Begin the test with the ignition switch in the OFF position. Depress the odometer/trip odometer switch button. While still holding the odometer/trip odometer switch button depressed, turn the ignition switch to the ON position, but do not start the engine. Release the odometer/trip odometer switch button. The instrument cluster will simultaneously begin to illuminate all of the operational segments in the VFD units, and perform a bulb check of each operational bus message-controlled LED indicator. The VFD segments and LED indicators remain illuminated as each gauge needle is swept to several calibration points and back. If a VFD segment or an LED indicator fails to illuminate, or if a gauge needle fails to sweep through the calibration points and back during this test, the instrument cluster must be replaced. The actuator test is now completed. The instrument cluster will automatically exit the self-diagnostic mode and return to normal operation at the completion of the test. The actuator test will be aborted if the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position, or if the ignition switch is turned to the START position. Go back to 1 to repeat the test, if necessary."

Forgetting about your 21st century electronics, why not try cleaning the throttle body and idle air control valve to cure your stalling problem.

That answers part of my question. Thank you. How difficult is it to clean the throttle body on the 2.4l? Is it possible that the accessory short caused the communication faults found in the cluster test? My interior lights did dim down briefly before the fuse popped. My vehicle: 2002 Chrysler Voyager eC, 2.4L, 4spd Auto, 194k miles and counting

RIP

ORC is the Occupant Restraint Controller for airbags and seat belt pretentioners. SBEC/DEC/MCM are just different computer configurations. You have a SBEC computer meaning Single Board Engine Computer better known as the PCM or Powertrain Control Module that controls engine functions. I've never been able to find a troubleshooting tree for cluster codes.

Thank you for explaining those codes a little better. I missed your post somehow when I was reading through before. My vehicle: 2002 Chrysler Voyager eC, EDZ, 41TE, 195k miles and still running strong.

Uh Oh. Looks like blknblu gave you the cluster test for 5th gen 2008-2014 vans. Here's the cluster test for your 4th generation van. Different components and display: DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - SELF-DIAGNOSTICS The instrument clusters are equipped with a self diagnostic test feature to help identify electronic problems. Prior to any test, perform the Self-Diagnostic Test. The self diagnostic system displays instrument cluster stored fault codes in the odometer display, sweeps the gauges to the calibration points, and bulb checks the warning indicators. When the key is in the ON position with the engine not running, the MIL will remain illuminated for regulatory purposes. To activate the Self-Diagnostic program: With the ignition switch in the OFF position, depress the TRIP ODOMETER RESET button. Continue to hold the TRIP ODOMETER RESET button until Sof and a number (software version number (i.e. Sof 3.2 number may differ ) appears in the odometer window then release the button. If a fault code is present, the cluster will display it in the odometer display. When all fault codes have been displayed, the cluster will display “end” in the odometer display. Looking at it (I hadn't looked before), looks like I will need to remove the air intake, two bolts, two electrical connectors (for the TPS and the IAC valve I'm assuming) and the throttle cable to remove the throttle body assembly. It also looks like there is a gasket between the throttle body and the intake manifold. Doesn't look too involved at all. My vehicle: 2002 Chrysler Voyager eC, 2.4L, 4spd Auto, 194k miles and counting

Regarding those codes -- they pop up every time when the battery is low or something pulled down the voltage (like the short). They are "normal" and nothing to worry about. Basically what happens is that when the voltage drops below the point where bus operates normally, there is still enough juice for the cluster to function but because bus is no longer function the cluster "discovers" that it can't communicate with anything else and stores codes. Nothing to worry about. Regarding throttle body cleaning. There are two areas that you wish to clean -- first is the throttle plate, but that would have no bearing on your idle. Second area is idle air control motor. You can pull it out on the side of the throttle body, next to TPS sensor. Be careful when you clean it NOT to spray o-rings with the throttle cleaner. They will expand and become useless. Good luck....

Thank you. I will tackle the IAC valve later on. The van does not seem to be having any issues at the moment. The only code that is really driving me nuts is the 400.1, since it has been on the van since the day we got it. The only reason it's driving me nuts is because I don't know if there is an electrical problem with the van causing that code to remain (since all other codes seem to go away on their own), or why it is still there. My vehicle: 2002 Chrysler Voyager eC, EDZ, 41TE, 195k miles and still running strong.

400.1 is a permanent non-expiring code that is stored in cluster's NVRAM. Same way ABS codes are stored in NVRAM and never go away unless erased with a scan tool. Since 400.1 is triggered by low voltage condition, every van out there has one. I have access to DRB III and erased this code on my vans -- it stays away till the battery gets run down for whatever reason and you try to start... It is a "normal" code to have...

So, in other words, it is a useless code? My vehicle: 2002 Chrysler Voyager eC, EDZ, 41TE, 195k miles and still running strong.

Had another issue with the van today. It had some shuttering and almost stalled. Checked the cluster, and had 100.3, .4, and .5. I am starting to wonder if the van is having electrical problems. No MIL though. Not TDC when checking with the key dance. Just the communication codes. My vehicle: 2002 Chrysler Voyager eC, EDZ, 41TE, 195k miles and still running strong.

To sum it up -- YES. It is the kind of thing that happens in the development of complex systems. Software engineers were given a set of abnormal parameters to monitor and the code was written to detect those. However, what was not thought of is that mundane events such as low battery can cause those conditions to happen.

They should have at least made it expire. Lol. That way, it would be like the rest of the codes - when the problem arises - there's a code. When the problem no longer exists for a given amount of time, code goes away. One should not have to pay a mechanic to clear a code just because the battery went south. Just saying. My vehicle: 2002 Chrysler Voyager eC, EDZ, 41TE, 195k miles and still running strong.
