this was one of the most disappointing trips I have been on. I was told that there would be some walking. The tour had a lot of older people on it and we ended up walking 75 miles total in 10 days. The tour guide was a lot younger and walked very fast. My friend and I could not keep up and we were left behind at several places. There were 2 tour guides and I felt one of them should have been assigned to the end of the group. We ended up getting lost in Rome, which was very scary. We started taking cabs, and did not count on this added expense.. In addition, we were promised 18 days in our trip and our tour was cut short by one day without explanation or a refund for that one day. Assigning desired rooms was also given out to certain people instead of mixing it up and allowing everyone to experience the beauty and comfort of each place we stayed. We all paid the same price, but the same people were assigned the desired rooms, while the others looked out onto a brick wall!

In Rome we have 7 open roof - hop on hop off - tour bus companies. Which one to choose is not always easy to say, it depends mostly on your interests and how much time you have available. For example the Roma Christina bus tour is more specialized with pilgrims; Roma Cristiana is part of the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi which is overseen by the Vatican. They also offer deals which include public transportation tickets.

Generally, buses can’t get into small roads, especially in the old city center. This is why you always have to consider that you will walk a lot even though you’re talking the hop on hop off bus! Every bus tour will tell you how often it runs but it is always subject to the traffic in Rome.

During the summer months it gets very hot and the double decker buses do not have sun protection on the roof, neither do the bus stops where you have to wait, so it is always a good idea to have sun screen with you. Having a water bottle isn't a bad idea either but near most stops you'll be able to find food and snacks stands!

If you are traveling with children then it’s worth having a closer look at the kid’s prices and up to what age you get discounts. The Roma Cristiana Open bus tour gives you the best deal considering that kids under 10 go for free. Take some time before you start to hop-on and off, write down your needs on a piece of paper and start comparing one by one.

Check each website separately because many open hop on-hop off bus tours offer special deals and discounts, especially during summer! When you’re around Termini train station, many ticket vendors will stop you so it is good if you know what you are looking for in advance so you know if you are getting the bus tour you want!

Please ask before: if the tickets you are getting are valid for calendar days or from the first validation!

A bus company I really like is the City Sightseeing Rome bus tours. Rome is a very special city and has many attractions. Line A from City Sightseeing Rome has 8 stops, which covers a lot of the city and the whole tour lasts about 1, 5 hours depending on traffic.

110 Open Bus Tour of Rome

This special bus 110 Open bus tour of Rome for tourists departs every 10 minutes starting from 8.00AM – 8.00PM from Piazza del Cinquecento which is the square in front of Termini train Station. It's special because you can combine it with the Archeobus which takes you to the most important archaeological sites of Rome. A hostess on the bus offers tour guides in several languages! It takes you around the most famous sights in Rome. Check out the special private  party tour they offer, breakfast or Happy Hour included!

Archeobus Bus Tours in Rome

It also takes you out to San Giovanni in Laterano, the Baths of Caracalla and the Appian way. Best of Rome Sightseeing: 5 Tours to Take with Kids

Virtual reality at the colosseum.

A good guide can make ancient Rome’s past come alive just through his or her stories, but technological bells and whistles certainly don’t hurt. Take a virtual reality tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill to glimpse for yourself what these famed sites looked like in their glory days. Participants download an app and are given custom-made cardboard goggles that work in tandem with a smartphone. At certain points during the tour, you’re prompted to engage with the app in order to “see” the Colosseum et al as they once were. Best for ages 5 and up.

Catacombs at Night

Imagine exploring one of Rome’s most important catacombs in the darkness, by flashlight, with access to areas that are never opened during the day. On Tuesdays and Fridays, you can experience an exclusive night tour of the Catacombs of Priscilla — just you, your companions and your guide. The tour begins at the Capuchin Crypt , an ossuary decorated with the bones of some 4,000 Capuchin monks; afterward, guests are driven by private chauffeur to the catacombs. In addition to the areas of the catacombs that are open to the public, participants get to step inside three secret chambers that hold ancient frescoes and other treasures offering a peek into the 2,000-year-old story of this Christian burial ground. Best for ages 8 and up — teenagers especially love it.

Waterfalls of Marmore

Get out of the city and explore a bit of the beautiful Italian countryside on a day trip to the Cascata della Marmore (Waterfalls of Marmore) in southern Umbria, a 90-minute drive from Rome. You’ll start at the top of the falls and make your way downward along small, verdant pathways in a botanical park; if it’s a hot day, duck under the spray to get wet — extraordinarily refreshing and lots of fun. The driver picks everyone up at the bottom for an excursion to nearby Assisi, where a local guide meets you for a tour before you head back to Rome. It’s a great day out for kids who love to climb and run around.  Best for ages 5 and up (no strollers).

Pompeii Treasure Hunt

Kids love a treasure hunt, and this new version amid the ruins of Pompeii — an easy day trip from Rome by train — is sure to capture their attention. At the start of the tour, the little ones in the group receive a map with a list of clues and questions to answer along the way, plus a small prize as a reward for their efforts. Like many treasure hunt-style activities, this one is truly kid-focused. Guides specifically engage the children and tailor the commentary to their level, while parents sit back and enjoy.  Best for ages 4 to 10.

Park of the Monsters

Commissioned in the 16th century, the Park of the Monsters in Bomarzo (south of Orvieto in Umbria, about an hour’s drive from Rome) contains all sorts of strange and eerie sculptures that will fascinate kids and adults alike. There’s a house built on a disorienting slant, an upside-down tower, a giant screaming mouth, a mermaid-like figure and other moss-covered oddities, all of which kids can explore as a guide takes you through the park. Hi, We are family of 2 adults and 3 kids (3, 6 and 12 year old) who will be staying in Rome between Saturday August 11th through to Wednesday August 15th. we are looking for an engaging child friendly tour guide to take us through he following: – tour of sights in Rome i.e. Vatican, Colleseum, Museums etc… – Pompei and Mt Vesuvies tour – Any other child friendly sight or interactive classes like cooking etc. Ideally we would like to skip the queues where possible and prefer the private tours.. look forward to hearing from you Regards Zuned Agree: yes
