The comedy play is written by BAFTA-nominated creator of ITV’s The Durrells and BBC 1’s Men Behaving Badly, Simon Nye, and directed by multi-Olivier Award winner Sean Foley.

Can this really be a true story? In The Crown Jewels , Simon Nye makes his West End play debut by dramatising an astonishing 17th-century heist, in which a mad Irish rebel made a pretty decent attempt at stealing those treasures from the Tower of London just before Charles II’s 10-year Jubilee celebration. It’s a royally great subject, particularly following Charles III’s Coronation.

As for the actual telling of this tale, the sparkling gem of a performance comes from comedian Al Murray, who makes an impressive acting debut as the foppish, womanising, tyrannical king. He has majestic command of the stage, flipping instantly between silly (his confusion over a newly discovered fruit, his outlandish royal pronunciation) and dangerous: Anyone who offends him will lose their head.

Murray forms a brilliant double act with Adonis Siddique as his terrified footman. “So funny!” chirps Charles every time he cracks a joke, usually about his hatred of the Dutch or Oliver Cromwell – and Siddique’s aide immediately breaks into nervous laughter. I’d happily watch a whole show just of the two of them.

But then Murray, drawing on his vast stand-up experience as the Pub Landlord, also makes fantastic use of the live audience. He flirts, he teases (one man, he deduces, must be destitute because he can’t afford a wig), and he commands another to stand with a brisk “Up, boy!” He also ad-libs a hilarious exchange with a couple sitting in a box – definitely the comic highlight.

Frustratingly, the other scripted parts of the show are plodding in comparison. The scenes with the dour plotters just don’t land, partly because their motivation is muddled. Shouty leader Colonel Blood wants justice for his native Ireland, but there’s a lot of history to get across there, while his placid son and drunken friend just seem to go along with his vague, and extremely perilous, plan.

There’s a bit of a Restoration comedy framing to Sean Foley’s production, but it feels closer to panto or sitcom (like Nye’s hit Men Behaving Badly ). However the pacing is far too sluggish, and the overreliance on knob gags gets tiresome. It’s also hard to figure out the tone: It’s generally quite cartoonish, but with sudden dashes of sex and violence.

A starry cast papers over some of those cracks. Mel Giedroyc gamely spoofs her Bake Off experience: her Mrs. Edwards, wife of the man guarding the Crown Jewels, has the enterprising idea to flog edible souvenirs, like a sourdough sceptre, to visitors. But she’s most fun when let loose on the audience, playing a randy duchess with a sublimely preposterous French accent.

Aidan McArdle, Joe Thomas and Nye’s Men Behaving Badly mate Neil Morrissey are rather wasted as Blood and co., but Tanvi Virmani gets good mileage out of their accomplice, a star actress of her day with an over-the-top declamatory style. Carrie Hope Fletcher , like Giedroyc, winks at her past by playing a Cinderella-esque unmarried girl who belts out an “I want” song, but her other numbers – though skilfully delivered – just slow the action.

Michael Taylor supplies vibrant costumes (Charles’s gold shoes are delightful), and a breathless chase scene played out on a big map with puppets offers some zany theatricality. More of that inventiveness is needed to turn this fitfully funny historical curio into a crowning achievement.

The Crown Jewels review – the cream of British comedy can’t find a funny line between them

Garrick theatre, London The likes of Al Murray, Neil Morrissey and Mel Giedroyc can’t rescue Simon Nye’s woefully tedious show about the real-life heist of King Charles II’s crown jewels

T here are two unforgivable crimes in this 17th-century heist caper based on the attempted robbery of King Charles II’s crown jewels by an Irish rebel. The first is that it manages to make an intriguing and little-known historical incident bland. The second is that it enlists some of the cream of British comedy – Al Murray in his stage debut, Neil Morrissey, Mel Giedroyc, Joe Thomas – and none of them manage to find a funny line between them. If there has to be a third, it is that it sets Carrie Hope Fletcher ’s strong, beautiful voice to random, anodyne songs.

Directed by Sean Foley, it tells the story of Colonel Thomas Blood (Aidan McArdle), a notorious thorn in the side of the Stuart crown and government, who on 9 May 1671 attempted to purloin the jewels from the Tower of London, with Robert Perrot (Morrissey, who looks like a rocker in period dress), Blood’s son (Thomas, of The Inbetweeners fame) and an actor posing as his wife (Tanvi Virmani). Stabbing the keeper (also played by Murray), they are stopped by his son (Adonis Siddique), just back from Flanders. Extraordinarily, Blood was pardoned by the king and apparently served his days out as a spy for him.

This attempted act of subversion was arguably as ambitious as that of Guy Fawkes, so it is fascinating that it is not in our national consciousness in the same way. But this production will not ignite any curiosity.

As Michael Taylor’s sets twizzle from room to room, it looks conceptually dashed off with sub-pantomime grade characters. Written by Simon Nye, who gave us Men Behaving Badly (he is reunited with Morrissey here), the jokes are puerile and the show’s few songs, by Nye and Grant Olding, lame.

Murray’s King Charles is a tyrant and a sleazeball, pointing to women in the audience and ordering his footmen to bring them to his room. Other characters seem as priapically preoccupied, but Nye’s sexed-up script brings a welter of beached innuendoes.

There is some amusement to hearing Murray’s clipped, aristocratic vowels, while Fletcher is good as the stroppy Elizabeth and Thomas brings his Inbetweeners’ haplessness as Blood’s wimpy son, but this cannot sustain us for two hours.

To top it all, in a moment of Pub Landlord-style audience participation, an audience member trumps the humour in the script, telling Murray’s king that he is from Chorleywood and therefore a hunter. This is the funniest moment in a woefully tedious evening.

The Crown Jewels is a new comedy play written by BAFTA award-winning screenwriter Simon Nye and is currently out on tour, following a Summer run in London at The Garrick Theatre. With direction by Olivier Award recipient Sean Foley, it features an all-star cast, specifically Al Murray, Mel Giedroyc, Neil Morrissey, Joe Thomas, Carrie Hope Fletcher and Aidan McArdle, who are supported by West End performers Tanvi Virmani and Adonis Siddique. The play is based in Canterbury this week at The Marlowe Theatre and is Fletcher’s first appearance at the venue since playing the villain in last year’s Sleeping Beauty pantomime . I was excited to review the show and see how this group of mega-stars would work as a company.

Initial thoughts

A comical retelling of Colonel Thomas Blood’s 1671 plot to steal the Crown Jewels, it’s a madcap heist story focusing on the protectors of the Tower of London, the band of thieves and King Charles II. Whilst it follows Nye’s script, the comedy style leaves plenty of room for improvisation and adlib, which is where performers Murray and Giedroyc come into their own. It is hilarious in places and a little flat in others, with the material lacking structure in the improvised sections.

At moments it feels like the pair are on stage doing 17th-century stand-up in Michael Taylor’s period costumes. The elements of audience interaction are priceless and continue throughout the show, but it can be so easy to lose sense of the wider plot as the material goes completely off on a tangent and the audience (and cast) are in fits of unprecedented laughter. The show quite literally goes off the rails throughout the performance and it is pure comedy chaos watching the production get back on track.

A play of two halves

The first act is far funnier than the second, largely because of its silly comedy style which is full of innuendo. In the first half I was totally perplexed by the madcap comedy style, but it was so outrageous that I wanted to find out more. Within the 17th-century setting, the rude jokes feel absolutely ridiculous, but this is actually where the production’s strengths lie. It is all very panto, but the more the company and creative team follow this approach, the funnier the material is.

Unfortunately the second act didn’t live up to my expectations, with Murray not managing to generate the same amount of reaction from the audience. The comedy style is quite polarising and it really works in the initial part of the production, but it wears thin later on due to repetition. Also the local jibes towards Kent which are much appreciated at the start are used a little too much.

Giedroyc and Fletcher have some humorous lines towards the end of the show and Giedroyc’s stint as the French Noblewoman is a notable addition to the latter half of the production. Without these elements, I think The Crown Jewels would work better as a one-act, shorter piece.

Costumes and set design

Michael Taylor’s costume design is extremely lavish and colourful, adding some vibrancy to the ornate palace and muted Tower of London sets. The majority of the cast wear wigs that match the time period and it adds to the humour of the show seeing such famous performers with larger than life hairstyles. The sets themselves aren’t particularly game-changing in their depiction of the different London locations. Footmen aid the transition of the sets, making the scene changes almost comical, but the play seems to rely heavily on the notable names within the cast and in doing so, it falls short in its visual design and staging. An outlier to this is the Tower of London map set with the puppets, which is comedy gold and a fantastic way to close act one. It would’ve been brilliant to see more daring and creative ideas like this!

Standout performances

Without a shadow of a doubt, Mel Giedroyc is the star of the show as Mrs Edwards/French Noblewoman. Giedroyc portrays two absolutely hilarious characters: a protector of the jewels and a French noble guest visiting for the King’s Coronation. The first character is brash and flirts a lot, whilst the other is classy and cheeky. The dual roles showcase the depth of Giedroyc’s comedy skills, showing two sides to the performer. She is also partly responsible for the infectious comedy dynamic between the Edwards family, as the banter between them is so natural and effortless. The performers, specifically Fletcher, were clearly struggling to keep a straight face in places and you can’t replicate this level of natural and unintentional comedy.

Fletcher has two small parts in the play (Elizabeth Edwards and Lady of the Bedchamber), but it is a welcome surprise to hear her sing. Fletcher’s singing acts as the book ends and dividers of the production, setting the scenes and bringing the production to a close. It brings the material down to earth, in and amongst the comedy madness.

The Crown Jewels… a work in progress?

What The Crown Jewels lacks in refinement and polished theatre, it more than makes up for in its over-the-top comedy style and standout performances. It is let down by the weaker second act, but the cast are clearly having a blast performing The Crown Jewels and it is worth giving the show a try for Mel Giedroyc’s comedy performance alone. The Crown Jewels  is the “hysterical” (The Spectator) new comedy based on the most unbelievable royal caper in British history. Charismatic and unpredictable Colonel Blood, along with a trio of misfits, is planning the greatest heist of all time: stealing the Crown Jewels in plain sight. But reigning monarch Charles II can’t afford a royal scandal, and no King likes people handling their Crown Jewels…

Full West End cast for The Crown Jewels announced

The new comedy stars Al Murray, Carrie Hope Fletcher and more

Full casting has been revealed for the new West End comedy The Crown Jewels, opening at the Garrick Theatre next month.

Penned by Simon Nye, the piece is loosely based on a true story surrounding an audacious bank heist during the reign of Charles II.

As already revealed, Al Murray ( The Pub Landlord ) makes his West End acting debut as Charles II/Talbot Edwards, while  Mel Giedroyc ( The Great British Bake Off ) will play Mrs Edwards/French Noblewoman, Carrie Hope Fletcher ( Bad Cinderella, Les Misérables, Heathers in the West End) plays Elizabeth Edwards/ Lady of the Bedchamber, Aidan McArdle ( Leopoldstadt ) plays Colonel Blood,   Neil Morrissey ( Men Behaving Badly, Line of Duty ) plays Captain Perrot/Tourist,   Joe Thomas ( The Inbetweeners ) plays Tom Blood Jnr/ Tourist and Tanvi Virmani ( Life of Pi ) plays Jenny Blaine/Jailer.

Set to join them are Adonis Siddique as Wythe Edwards/Footman, Dedun Omole as Footman, Ryan Lane as William Smith/Footman, Kieran Brown as Footman and Emma Bown as Footman.

The creative team is director Sean Foley, set and costume designer Michael Taylor, lighting designer Natasha Chivers, with sound design by Andy Graham and music by Grant Olding. The props supervisor is Lizzie Frankl for Propworks and Kate Dowling is the associate props supervisor, Hilary Lewis is the costume supervisor and Dewi Johnson is associate director.

After its West End season (which begins on 7 July) the show will tour to Salford, Canterbury, Cardiff and Milton Keynes, with further casting to be confirmed.

Queen + Adam Lambert have announced ‘The Crown Jewels’: a limited 10-date run of shows at the Park Theater at Park MGM in Las Vegas for September.

Queen + Adam Lambert are set to rock the Las Vegas Strip this fall with a 10-date limited engagement, The Crown Jewels, at Park Theater at Park MGM in Las Vegas. Shows will be held September 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 14, 15, 19, 21 and 22, with all shows starting at 8pm. One of their performance dates, Saturday, 8 September, lands on Queen Day in Las Vegas, which former Mayor Oscar Goodman declared in 2004.

Tickets for The Crown Jewels shows range in price from $79 to $350, as well as a limited number of on-Stage seats, not including applicable service charges, will go on sale Friday, May 11 at 10 a.m at the Ticketmaster website .  A limited number of VIP packages will also be available.

Members of both Queen and Adam Lambert’s Fan Clubs will be able to purchase tickets before the general public beginning Tuesday, 8 May at 10 am PT. M life Rewards members and Live Nation and Ticketmaster customers will receive access to a pre-sale running on Wednesday, May 9 at 10 am PT through Thursday, 10 May at 10 pm. PT. Queen + Adam Lambert have come a long way since first sharing a stage for the American Idol finale in May 2009. Since then, the critically acclaimed creative partnership has proved to be a global phenomenon, having played over 150 shows in all corners of the world. Filling stadiums and festivals, Queen + Adam Lambert’s awe-inspiring show has drawn across-the board rave notices.

Now, announcing this specially crafted The Crown Jewels show, Queen’s Brian May said: “We’re ready to take on the ultimate challenge … to dazzle Vegas!!”

Band mate Roger Taylor was equally as enthusiastic, saying he is: “Looking forward to rocking the Strip,” singing the praises of “the audaciously and phenomenally talented Adam Lambert.”

Lambert added: “I’m so excited to help share The Crown Jewels with the Strip. You’ll be humming them all night!”

Just as the original Queen scaled unprecedented heights and shattered audience records, so have Queen + Adam Lambert. Their first full live show, played in Europe in 2012, saw the band make a spectacular debut in front of half a million people in Kiev. More recent shows in Brazil, Portugal and Japan have regularly drawn audiences of up to 80,000 for a single concert.

But Queen + Adam Lambert are not a band to rest on their laurels. In the summer of 2017, they toured North America with a brand new state-of-the-art production specifically tailored to celebrate the 40th anniversary of News Of The World , which was originally released in October 1977 and remains Queen’s biggest-selling studio album to date. The tour extended across Europe and the UK through to the end of 2017, followed by Australia and New Zealand in early 2018.

It was North American audiences that first truly embraced Queen + Adam Lambert, paving the way to worldwide arena-filling success. Playing their first ever full tour with 24 shows across the U.S. and Canada in the summer of 2014, this generation-spanning super group not only sold out every date, but were later crowned Band of the Year at the 10th annual Classic Rock, Roll of Honor awards and Best Live Band of the Year in Ultimate Classic Rock’s reader’s poll. From that point on, there was no stopping the revitalized Queen machine and their incandescent new front man.

Queen + Adam Lambert’s magnificent 2018 live show has been custom tailored for the band by some of the world’s most cutting-edge creative talents. Responsible for design and production is Ric Lipson from Entertainment Architects Stufish Productions, renowned worldwide for their innovative work with artists such as Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, and U2, as well the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Making use of over 300 moving lights during the show is the highly acclaimed lighting designer Rob Sinclair, who has illuminated tours for major artists including Adele, Peter Gabriel and Kylie Minogue. The production’s genuinely eye-popping laser elements are the work of ER Productions, behind both the opening and closing ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics and seen by over 900 million people worldwide.

“The stage production, theatrics, band performance and audience reaction is probably the best that I have ever had the pleasure to witness. The unparalleled champions of arena rock,” wrote the critic of the UK newspaper Daily Express .
