Top sights & attractions on cruises to new orleans, french quarter.

The bohemian 18th-century French Quarter is the city’s cultural hub, which is rich in history, architecture, and music. Explore the jazz bars of Bourbon Street, and stroll streets lined by colorful 18th and early 19th-century houses adorned with filigree cast-iron balconies. Visit St. Louis Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the United States, and watch street performers in Jackson Square. Head for the fabulous French Market for more music, gourmet treats, and art.

The Garden District

Easily reached on the historic St. Charles Avenue Streetcar, this upscale neighborhood displays another face of the architecture of the Deep South. Here, you’ll find historic homes and grand, sometimes charmingly faded mansions built by some of the city’s famous residents. Ancient oak trees festooned by Spanish moss curve dramatically over the sidewalks, adding to the leafy atmosphere. While you’re here, explore Magazine Street, lined with top-notch boutiques, bars, and restaurants.

World-Class Museums

New Orleans is packed with superb museums and galleries. The National WWII Museum vividly tells the story of war, while the Contemporary Arts Center offers rotating exhibits of painting, sculpture, film, and photography. Mardi Gras World isn’t a museum, as such, but provides a fascinating insight into the work behind those dazzling Mardi Gras floats. Sazerac House, with its own distillery, takes you through the history of the city’s cocktail culture.

Take a Steamboat Tour on the Mississippi River

A great way to take in the views of the Louisiana landscapes bordering the broad crescent of the lower Mississippi River is from a traditional river steamboat. A local guide will point out all the sights and regale you with facts, figures, and gossip, while you’ll have a chance to taste delicious local specialties and listen to calliope music and live jazz.

Join a Ghost Tour

New Orleans’ spooky underbelly includes eerie tales of voodoo, witchcraft, and vampires. Join a guided ghost tour at night for a theatrical and entertaining insight into the city’s supernatural past. Start in the French Quarter and visit the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum, a place of historic medical contraptions and reputed paranormal activity. LaLaurie Mansion has a grisly history and is believed to be the most haunted house in the French Quarter.

Top Food & Drink Spots in New Orleans

New Orleans has an exciting and distinctive cuisine, influenced by Creole and Cajun spices and traditions. Jambalaya is a thick, spicy stew including chicken, sausage, shrimp, rice, and vegetables. Gumbo, meanwhile, features meat or shellfish cooked in a punchy stock and is flavored with celery, bell peppers, and onions, with rice served on the side.

Po’ Boy is a meaty sandwich served on French bread, while Etouffée is a rice dish topped with a roux sauce and shrimp or crawfish. These crustaceans, incidentally, are like mini freshwater lobsters, best cooked in a big pot with corn, potatoes, and Cajun spices.

Dig into the quintessential New Orleans dessert, the sugary beignet, best enjoyed with coffee at the famous Café du Monde, 800 Decatur Street.

Culture & History of New Orleans

New Orleans has a unique heritage, making it completely different from other cities in the U.S. The city was founded in 1718 by French colonists and handed to Spain in 1760, after which time it flourished as a port. Following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, New Orleans became part of the U.S. Since then, despite various booms and slumps, not least the Depression, New Orleans has fostered a multi-cultural ambiance that combines French and Spanish Creole with southern roots and an eclectic arts and music scene.

Locals are passionate about the city’s jazz heritage and Creole cuisine and take enormous pride in the annual Mardi Gras festival, a celebration that occurs 47 days before Easter. This is one of the largest celebrations in the U.S. with parades, concerts, food, and those famous Mardi Gras beads.

New Orleans Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Cruise ships dock at the Julia Street Cruise Terminal on the Mississippi River in the heart of the city, just a five-minute drive from the French Quarter. It’s served by the Riverfront Streetcar Line, on which vintage streetcars transport you between the aquarium and the French Market. There are souvenir stands, a refreshment outlet, restrooms, Wi-Fi, and an ATM in the terminal itself. Julia Street Cruise Terminal is located in the midst of shops and restaurants; it’s right next door to Riverwalk Outlets, which is packed with places to eat, shop, and drink.

Transportation in New Orleans

Getting around New Orleans is easy. Many visitors enjoy walking, as there’s so much to see and the center is relatively compact, but taxis and rideshares are widely available. Riding the old-fashioned streetcars is fun, and the four main lines take in all the major sights. You can also rent a bicycle and explore 100 miles of cycle lanes, zip around by ferry, or summon a pedicab and take in the sights while chatting to your “driver”.

Shopping Near the New Orleans Cruise Port

Shopping in New Orleans is spectacular, ranging from quirky local specialty stores to high-end designer labels. Within a short walk of the cruise terminal, you’ll come to the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, where you’ll find discounts on numerous popular brands. For the most upscale shopping, head to Canal Place on Canal Street, where you’ll find luxury retailers.

For some authentic New Orleans souvenirs, head to the French Market. Here, you’ll find colorful carnival masks, voodoo dolls, any number of hot and spicy sauces to take home, Mardi Gras beads, and pralines. Beignet mix is another fun item to take home to recreate your time in the Big Easy.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The currency in New Orleans is the U.S. Dollar. ATMs are located all around the city, including one located within the cruise terminal.

Tipping is part of the local culture here, as it is throughout the U.S. It is customary to tip 15% to 20% of your total bill in restaurants, while taxi drivers, bartenders, and baristas also appreciate a gratuity. Tip good tour guides around 10 percent of the cost of the tour, per person.

Brilliance of the Seas

Introduced in 2002, Brilliance of the Seas houses 2,543 passengers and 848 staff members. The ship's last major refurbishment was in 2013, but it received some Oasis-class updates in April 2018 (plus new furniture and fresh carpeting). The ship is big enough to offer an array of activities, yet small enough to pass through canals and offer more unique itineraries than larger ships in the fleet.

Brilliance of the Seas offers eight restaurants, including five specialty options. The ship also provides entertainment for the whole family, including poolside movies, a three-story theater, a rock climbing wall and a mini-golf course. While adults grab a cocktail at one of the bars, kids and teens can enjoy age-appropriate youth clubs.

As far as lodging goes, about 75% of the ship's cabins offer ocean views (and about half of those come with balconies). The most budget-friendly cabins are Interior staterooms (170 square feet). All include amenities like flat-screen TVs and minifridges.

Brilliance of the Seas departs from ports throughout North America and Australia for a variety of sailings around the world.

Norwegian Getaway

Introduced in 2014, the 3,963-passenger, 1,646-crew member Norwegian Getaway was recently renovated in 2020 to add a full-service Starbucks, a new live music venue and more. Getaway appeals to younger crowds thanks to a multistory water park and age-specific kids and teens clubs. Still, it appeals to couples as well with its romantic gourmet dining venues, such as the Ocean Blue specialty restaurant.

When it comes to lodging, solo travelers can take advantage of Studio cabins, while groups can opt for Inside, Oceanview, Balcony and Club Balcony Suite category cabins. If you’re looking for even more luxury, splurge on a cabin in The Haven, which offers access to a private sun deck and 24-hour butler service.

Originally launched in 2005, Carnival Liberty carries 2,974 guests and 1,160 staff members. It received a minor refresh of its public spaces in 2021, along with other routine maintenance. Over a dozen COVID cases were found on a cruise ship that just docked in New Orleans

Norwegian Cruise Lines confirmed 10 cases among Norwegian Breakaway passengers and crew members on Saturday, and then seven more on Sunday, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.

At least 17 people have tested positive for COVID-19 — including one probable case of the omicron variant — on a cruise ship that disembarked in New Orleans over the weekend.

Norwegian Cruise Lines confirmed 10 cases among its passengers and crew members on Saturday and then seven more on Sunday, according to the Louisiana Department of Health . The cruise line confirmed in a statement that it had identified a "handful" of cases onboard the Norwegian Breakaway and said all of them are asymptomatic.

Don't let omicron crash your holiday gathering. Here's how to keep your family safe

With omicron looming over the holidays, here's how to stay safe.

"One of those cases, which was a South African crew member who was in isolation for the entirety of the cruise, is suspected to have the COVID-19 Omicron variant," a Norwegian Cruise Lines spokesperson said in an email to NPR.

State health officials had previously said that the crew member with the probable omicron case was not a Louisiana resident and did not leave the ship.

There were more than 3,200 people on board, according to the state health department. The ship departed from New Orleans on Nov. 28 and stopped in Belize, Honduras and Mexico before disembarking on Sunday.

Both Norwegian Cruise Lines and the Port of New Orleans said the cruise line requires all guests and crew members to be fully vaccinated, with on-site testing and proof of vaccination needed in order for people to board.

The company says it has implemented quarantine, isolation and contact tracing protocols for the identified cases and is testing everyone on board before they disembark.

"We take this matter extremely seriously and will continue to work closely with the CDC, the office of Governor John Bel Edwards, the Louisiana Department of Health as well as the city and port of New Orleans," it said.

The company added that there are currently no changes to scheduled future sailings on the Norwegian Breakaway. It told NPR that it's giving all guests sailing the Dec. 5 voyage an opportunity to cancel without penalty "in an abundance of caution and in compliance with CDC requirements."

Separately, Louisiana also confirmed its first case of the omicron variant on Sunday, which officials stressed was unrelated to the cruise.

"Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Anyone can get infected and sick with Norovirus," the CDC states on its website. "Norovirus is sometimes called the 'stomach flu' or 'stomach bug.' However, norovirus illness is not related to the flu, which is caused by influenza virus."

One of the biggest health risks posed by Norovirus infection is dehydration — the CDC recommends those infected drink plenty of liquids to aid recovering.

The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program requires cruise lines to report and document cases of illness on their ships in order to facilitate coordinated responses in case of emergency.

Carnival Freedom cruise ship catches fire near Bahamas

TAMPA, Fla. ( WFLA ) — A Carnival Cruise ship’s funnel caught on fire during their voyage near the Bahamas on Saturday.

Carnival said that at 3:15 p.m., the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side from the ship’s exhaust funnel.

In a statement from Carnival, the team said, “The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames. Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated but cannot yet be confirmed.”

A portion of the funnel on the port side fell onto Deck 10.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire at 5:20 p.m. All aboard were asked to stay away from balconies and open decks for their safety.

Two crew members fighting the fire were treat for minor smoke inhalation, according to Carnival. As of this report, there are no reported injuries for guests.

The U.S. Coast Guard was alerted and has activated their response team. The cruise is expected to continue sailing to Freeport and arrive on Sunday morning.

The ship was around 20 miles from Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, heading to Freeport. The ship departed from Port Canaveral on Thursday for a four-day trip.

On May 26, 2022, the same ship caught on fire while docked in Grand Turk . The inside of the Freedom’s funnel erupted in smoke and flames. The trip that was scheduled following the voyage had to be canceled.

The cruise does not expect the fire to impact the next voyage scheduled for Monday.

7 things to do as soon as you board a cruise ship.

Making the most of embarkation day can set you up for an enjoyable cruise vacation.

If you’ve never cruised before, embarking a modern vessel for the first time can be truly overwhelming. You don’t know what you don’t know, but by not doing certain things within the first hours, you risk spoiling your dream vacation.

The embarkation day process for a cruise is like a streamlined airport experience. Cruise lines provide a time window, usually from late morning to mid-afternoon, for arrival at the port.

Upon arrival, keep your boarding documents and ID ready. Once you’ve dropped off your luggage, cruise staff guide you to check-in where you'll present your ID, complete a health form, and receive your cruise card or wristband.

This card acts as a boarding pass, room key, and payment card onboard. Some lines offer keyless embarkation, allowing direct access to rooms and cards collected at the cabin. Before boarding, you'll go through a security line, albeit less rigorous than at an airport.

Once onboard, make sure to do these seven things as soon as you can. From checking your accommodations to enjoying the iconic sailaway, these steps ensure you maximize your onboard experience right from the start.

‘Outlander’ Finally Comes To Netflix With An Incredible New Season

300 billion perfect storm bitcoin price crash under 60 000 suddenly accelerates as ethereum xrp and crypto brace for shock fed flip, the top 10 richest people in the world may 2024, check your accommodation thoroughly.

As soon as you enter your cabin, inspect everything to ensure it meets your expectations and everything is in working order. Check that all facilities, such as the shower, toilet flush, lights, and electrical outlets, function properly.

If there is anything amiss, this is the time to contact guest services. You should expect a long queue on embarkation day, but the sooner you identify an issue, the higher the chance of a quick resolution, especially if an alternative cabin may be required.

You should check your cruise ship cabin and meet your room steward as soon as you can on embarkation ... [+] day.

This time also gives you an opportunity to stow your valuables in the cabin safe, and freshen up if desired.

Meet Your Cabin Steward

Introduce yourself to your cabin steward . They are key to ensuring your stay is comfortable, and will most likely call on you as soon as they realize you have arrived.

Discuss any specific preferences or needs you might have, such as extra pillows or allergies, or mention if you are late sleepers, for example. If you have any queries about room service or laundry options, now is the time to ask.

Cabin stewards are always professional, but getting to know yours early can enhance your onboard experience significantly.

Book Everything

Modern cruise ships are home to a dazzling range of entertainment and dining options. Early booking is crucial for popular onboard activities, dining reservations, and shore excursions.

In some cases, popular activities may have sold out prior to the cruise. For those that need to be booked on board, visit the relevant information desk or use the onboard app to make all your bookings as soon as possible.

You should also check your allocated dining time, if you are on a ship that operates a fixed dining concept. If you’re unhappy with the allocation, visit the maitre’d to request a change.

Attend Muster

The only absolute must-do on the first day is the muster drill. Prior to the pandemic, many cruise lines still required physical attendance in the theater or other large venue to go through the cruise safety procedures .

Nowadays, almost all cruise lines offer a virtual muster experience. Typically, a safety video is available on the cabin TV (which must be watched before accessing other functions) or even on the cruise line app.

You may still need to attend your designated lifeboat station to have your name taken, but this is straightforward and takes mere minutes.

Take Advantage Of Ship Tours

When you arrive in your cabin, check your daily planner to see if there are any introductory tours or sessions offered by the cruise line.

Embarkation day can be hectic and overwhelming. Join a guided tour to get your bearings.

Ship tours are ideal for first-time cruisers unfamiliar with the ship’s layout and generally how things work on board.

Keep an eye out for embarkation day tours or introductory sessions at the spa, fitness center, or casino. These often include special promotions or offers to kickstart your cruise experience.

Airplane Mode

To avoid hefty roaming charges, switch your phone to airplane mode. While at sea, your device could inadvertently connect to a cellular maritime network , which incurs high costs or data.

Even if you don't actively use your phone, you might accrue a significant bill from background data usage by your apps before you even receive an SMS notification—if you receive one at all.

Most cruise ships offer Wi-Fi packages, so consider purchasing one if you need to stay connected. Remember, cruise line apps typically require connection to the ship’s Wi-Fi network, but you can use them without buying an internet package.

Alternatively, use this time to disconnect and enjoy the break from constant connectivity. If so, use the time before sailaway to send some farewell messages.

Enjoy Sailaway

The sailaway party is a cruise tradition not to be missed. On many lines, the top decks will host live music and festivities as the ship departs.

It’s the perfect time to grab a drink, meet other travelers, and take in the stunning views as you set sail on your adventure. If you want to toast the sailaway, be sure to get a drink in good time, as the bars will all be busy.
