Sarasota Democratic party accuses Tiger Bay of "unfair treatment," favoritism toward GOP

The Sarasota Democratic Party  blasted  the nonpartisan political organization Sarasota Tiger Bay Club for "unfair treatment and favoritism" and recommended that Democratic candidates boycott its events.

Sarasota County Democratic Party Chairman Daniel Kuether accused the organization of excluding Democrats from forums, and representing the interests of Republicans. He also complained of a Tiger Bay board member who is running for a public hospital board seat also facilitating a candidate panel.

"It's plain and straightforward: Sarasota Tiger Bay is not following the policies and guidelines laid out on its website," Kuether said in a statement this week.

Tiger Bay's website says the group is "political but nonpartisan" and does not endorse candidates.

"However, the club certainly subjects candidates on its panels to no-holds-barred question and answer sessions by moderators and Tiger members," according to its website.

The website also says that the organization, which has long cultivated a reputation for fostering will always have more than one candidate on a panel, no matter the subject. However, Sarasota Democrats accused Tiger Bay of excluding their candidates from events and refusing to accommodate their schedules.

Tiger Bay board member Kevin Cooper , who was criticized in the Democrats' statement, called Kuether's allegations "unhinged and really disappointing." He said Tiger Bay schedules forums with candidates directly, not through the party apparatus.

"This feels like a scapegoat to failed leadership inside the local Democratic Party," Cooper said.

But Democrats said the local party has "repeatedly asked Sarasota Tiger Bay to reschedule events, to include all candidates, and to provide community members from all sides of the political aisle."

"These latest infringements are extremely concerning and unacceptable no matter where you sit on the political spectrum."

Until their concerns are addressed, Sarasota County Democrats recommended that "Democratic candidates not participate in Sarasota Tiger Bay panels and that Democrats refrain from attending Tiger Bay events."

The statement singled out for criticism Sarasota attorney Morgan Bentley, Tiger Bay's Program Committee co-chair, who represents the Republican Club of South Sarasota County  in a lawsuit against  the America First Southwest Florida Caucus, and Board Member Cooper, a vice president at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium who is running for a seat on the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Board.

Kuether claimed that Bentley said in a phone call he wanted to "expose" Mary Flynn O'Neill − the sister of far right Mike Flynn – as an extremist candidate for the hospital board before the primary election.

Bentley was incredulous at Kuether's statement and denied that Tiger Bay intentionally did not platform Democrats.

"This is a weird way to ask for a party chair. To just pick a fight − why are you picking a fight with a group that's trying to give your candidates more exposure? That's kind of crazy," Bentley told the Herald-Tribune.

Tiger Bay has just begun scheduling events for the 2024 election, including  forums  for the board that oversees the Sarasota Memorial Public Health System, the Sarasota County School Board, and both the city and county commissions.

Bentley said the group tried to "work around" the schedules of candidates who could not make specific dates. He also denied he told Kuether he wanted to "expose" Flynn O'Neill. Instead, Bentley said he wanted to platform the "full slate" of hospital board candidates who were part of an "interesting political movement."

Flynn O'Neill is part of a group of candidates  vying to join the nine-member public hospital board with rhetoric that includes COVID-19 conspiracy theories and right-wing talking points.

"I think many people in the public are curious about what the heck is going on. So why wouldn't we want them on a panel?" Bentley said.

Downtown Sarasota, Siesta Key, among most vulnerable to flooding and sea level rise, according to City of Sarasota report

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - The City of Sarasota was awarded grant funding for a vulnerability assessment. The money was given to the city from the Florida Department of Environmental Protections Resilient Florida Grant Program.

A vulnerability assessment of Sarasota was conducted and presented to the city on Monday.

The team looked at locations at risk of sea level rise and high flooding. They prioritized each area based on critical assets. Those critical assets include community and emergency facilities, transportation, and evacuation centers, to name a few.

More than 160 assets are at risk in the following five focus areas highlighted by the team.

Downtown Sarasota, Lido Key and St Armands, the North Trail, including Edwards Drive South to Centennial Park and everything west of Tamiami Trail, the South Trail, including Hudson Bayou to Bay Road West of Osprey Avenue, and North Siesta Key.

The city’s sustainability coordinator says ultimately the city will decide which project to work on, regardless of risk rating.

“There could be something that comes up as low vulnerability but is incredibly important for our evacuation routes, incredibly important for us culturally, so we can raise that up ourselves,” said Jeff Vredenburg. “Even a tiny bit of vulnerability isn’t acceptable so let’s make a decision internally to focus on that,” he added.

Vredenburg said they are on the final phase of planning and the next step will be to apply for funding from the state to address the vulnerable assets.

According to sources, he owns a five-bedroom house in Tampa's swanky gated community, Avila. He bought it in 2013 for $3.3 million.

7. Hulk Hogan

Terry Gene Bollea, better known as Hulk Hogan, is a retired pro wrestler. He is regarded as the most famous wrestling star worldwide and one of the greatest wrestlers ever.

Hulk Hogan has lived in Florida since his heydays. He once lived in Miami but now resides in Clearwater, Tampa Bay, where he opened the Hulkamania shop.

8. Chris Jericho

Christopher “Chris” Jericho is an American-Canadian rock musician and professional wrestler. He is currently contracted to All Elite Wrestling, where he’s the FTW Champion in his first reign.

Chris Jericho owns a house in Odessa, Tampa Bay, which he bought for about £ 2.45 million. The five-bedroom home sits on nearly six acres of land. Its highlight features include a chessboard room, performance centre room, and more.

9. Brian Johnson

Brian Johnson is an English songwriter and singer. In the 1980s, after Bon Scott's death, he became the third lead singer of AC/DC, an Australian band. He was also amongst the founding members of the rock band Geordie, formed in 1971 in Newcastle. Brian Johnson, now married to Brenda, lives in Sarasota, Tampa Bay, Florida.

10. Stephen King

Stephen Edwin King is an award-winning American author. Nicknamed the "King of Horror," he has explored several genres: mystery, fantasy, science fiction, crime, and suspense. He has also authored about 200 short stories, most of which have been published in collections.

Author Stephen King is one of the most famous residents of Sarasota, Tampa Bay, and its most famously reclusive. He owns two properties: one super private estate at the northern tip of Casey Key and his original home is a well-hidden mansion on Longboat Key.

11. Titus O’Neil

Thaddeus Michael Bullard Sr. is a pro wrestler and a retired arena football player. He is WWE's global ambassador and wrestles for them under the ring name Titus O'Neil. He lives in Lutz, Tampa Bay, with his sons Thaddeus Jr. and Titus.

12. Dwight Gooden

Dwight Eugen Gooden, nicknamed Doc and Dr. K is an American former professional baseball player. He played in the Major League Baseball (MLB) for 16 seasons. He pitched for the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He owns a five-bedroom house in New Tampa, Florida.

13. Rhonda Shear

Rhonda Shear is an American actress, TV personality, comedian, and entrepreneur. She is famous for her 90s roles as host of the USA network's USA Up All Night show. Rhonda is married to her childhood sweetheart, Van Fagen, and they live in St. Petersburg, Tampa Bay, Florida.

14. Robin Zander

Robin Wayne Zander is an American musician famous as the rhythm guitarist and lead singer for the rock band Cheap Trick and as a solo artist. In 2016, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a Cheap Trick member.

Zander met his wife, Pamela Stein, in Tampa in the early 1990s and eventually settled in Safety Harbor Marina to raise a family.

15. Vinny Lecavalier

Vincent "Vinny" Lecavalier is a former Canadian pro ice hockey centre. He is a special advisor of the National Hockey League's team, Montreal Canadiens. Lecavalier currently lives in Davis Island, Tampa Bay.

Deputies investigating after body found in Miquel Bay in Manatee County

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Manatee County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) is investigating after a body was found in Miquel Bay.

Deputies said that a boater found the badly decomposed body on Saturday in the shallow water near Rattlesnake Key in Miquel Bay. The current carried the body away from that location and required deputies to search for the body by air and with marine units.

They were able to find the body on the shoreline of Rattlesnake Key Sunday morning, according to MCSO.

Deputies said it's unknown how long the body was in the water.

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to confirm the gender and cause of death.

Southern Living , the lifestyle magazine that debuted in 1966, recently published an article titled "The 12 Best Beach Bars in Florida for Sun, Surf, and Stiff Drinks." The Sunshine State is represented from the Panhandle to the Keys.

Sharky’s on the Pier in Venice named among best beach bars in Florida

Previously voted best beach bar in Florida , Sharky's is a Venice landmark dating back to 1987. Located at the base of the  Venice Fishing Pier first built in 1966 , Sharky's places guests right on the sand of the beach Brohard Park overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to boasting spectacular sunsets, Sharky's has live music most evenings. 

Sharky’s serves a full food menu with popular items such as fried shrimp, chicken fingers, and their "famous grouper wrap." However, they're probably best known for a drink roster that includes a bunch of signature frozen beverages such as their list of margaritas.

Southern Living praised Sharky's for serving "serving up seafood and stiff frozen cocktails" and recommends the Megalodon Margarita (tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, sour mix, and fresh Florida orange juice.) "The two-story deck is a prime spot for taking in the sunset, or you can watch it from the lower level with your toes in the sand," reads the Southern Living blurb.

Sharky's more upscale sister restaurant, Fins at Sharky's, is located next door also overlooking the Venice Fishing Pier and the Gulf of Mexico on the south end of the island of Venice.
