cycle tours santiago de compostela

Camino de Santiago needs no introduction—its pilgrimage has already made its way on most adventurers’ wishlists. And it’s no wonder, the millennium-old route is much more than just a trail. Apart from awe-inspiring nature, friendly locals, and historic places, it’s also a spiritual journey said to be life-changing for many. By joining a guided, 7-day cycling tour, you get to experience it with other pilgrims in your group, relish the occasionally challenging paths, stay at quality hotels, and enjoy Spanish food and wine. There’s always a support vehicle by your side carrying all your belongings, perfect for when you need a snack or a break to rest your legs. The official end of the journey is the famed Santiago de Compostela, where you’ll get an official confirmation of your pilgrimage! Exclusive e-bike only date: July 28, 2024

Once you land in Santiago de Compostela airport, you will be picked up and transferred to your first hotel (2-hour drive) in Ponferrada. Before heading out to dinner, you’ll go and pick up your Pilgrim passport with your guide and your team—it will be stamped and confirm your Camino completion. Enjoy the charming Ponferrada, visit the 12th-century Castillo de los Templarios castle, or stroll through the old part of town, where the city’s folks take their paseo (promenade) in the evening before settling on their terraces for some refreshments. Get some rest—cycling starts tomorrow!

Set off on an exciting journey with Santiago in the distant sight! Take a fun ride along the Rio Sil before heading out of Ponferrada through vast fields and vines and arriving at the village of Columbrianos. From here, take a picturesque route, meandering through more vineyards and villages, the views of the monumental Las Ancares mountains in the distance. Following a descent on a fast trail, you’ll find yourself entering the beautiful town of Villafranca del Bierzo, a wonderful spot for lunch. As you head towards Vega de Valcarce, the valley opens up into a beautiful glaciated valley of meadows and tiny hamlets and villages.

Ponferrada towards Vega de Valcarce

Today’s route might be one of the more challenging ones, but the rewards are immense. First you’ll cruise deeper into the Valcarce Valley passing Herrerias, a village whose iron and steel industry goes back to the Middle Ages. Climbing begins here, up to O’Cebriero, which is on a well-surfaced path with some steeper sections, taking you past El Bierzo. The panoramas and views will take your mind off climbing! Once you reach O’Cebreiro, get some rest and celebrate your achievement before beginning a 10-km (6-mile) descent to the valley. Follow the Rio Ouribio through a valley wedged in by mountains, until you take the last descent to the bottom of the valley, entering the village of Samos (home to the great monastery of Los Santos Julian y Basilica de Samos). On hot days the river at Samos is an ideal place for a refreshing dip!

Cycle deep into the mysterious Galicia, rich with legends and stories of Brujeria (witchcraft) and mythology. Pedal though tiny, granite hamlets and farmsteads, which allows you to savor the region’s beauty. Upon reaching Sarria, the only sizable place enroute, you’ll climb up to the hill town—in Galicia the Camino is well-surfaced for cycling so you’ll enjoy today’s journey! Passing Barbadelo (and its 12th-century Romanesque church), pick up a long Corredoira taking you past the half-way point, meaning that there’s 100 km (60 miles) left to go! You’ll reach Mogarde and notice that the Camino gets a bit busier, as 100 km is the minimum distance which pilgrims need to pass to get their passport. Today’s destination is Portomarin, sitting high on the right-hand bank of the river, where the most important monuments of the town were moved stone by stone.

Head out for your first obstacle of the day: the climb up and past Monte de San Antonio, to the villages of Gonzar and Castromaior. The cycling is incredible as you follow the pretty Torres stream through glades of oak and pine, over softly-undulating countryside that is typical of this part of Galicia. Following a 11-km (7-mile) stretch of lane, climb gently through the lush Sierra de Ligonde, passing many villages boasting plenty of refreshments. The trail continues through oak woods and eucalyptus plantations, bringing you to the first village in the La Coruna province, Cornixa, from where you’ll follow a well-restored ancient medieval trail. A short steady climb takes you to Melide, your base for the night.

The grand finale! A steady climb takes you to the artisan’s town of Arzua, where, according to legend, a local woman who denied a tired, hungry pilgrim a piece of bread had her bread turned to stone! With sharing in mind, you’ll stop in Santa Irene for some rest and lunch, refueling for the final pedal to Santiago. After riding through Lavacolla, take on the last climb of the Camino as you head up on paved roads and along to Monte del Gozo (Mount Joy), which is where the long-awaited Santiago comes into view for the first time! It’s a downhill ride now all the way to Santiago de Compostela, a World Heritage Site. Reach Plaza de Obradoiro, Santiago’s impressive cathedral square, where you’ll celebrate the end of a truly memorable and life-changing ride with your team.

Cycling towards Santiago on the Camino

After a relaxing breakfast, it’s time to pack up and get transferred to Santiago de Compostela Airport (a 30-minute drive). If you’d like to stay longer, just ask your guides for some recommendations—Santiago de Compostela is a beautiful city to explore at your own pace! The cathedral is always a delight, especially the incense-bearing Botafumeiro. Other sights include Convento de San Paio de Antelares, which houses the Museo de Arte Sacro, the Plaza de la Azabachería, and Museo do Pobo Galego. The Hospital Real (now a luxury hotel) is worth a visit, or you can just relax at the world-famous plaza.

Meet your guides

Dan Hirst

We thoroughly enjoyed the holiday- it was a wonderful experience made more so by the great choice of guides that you have. We found the same last year with the two guides for the UK coast to coast trip. They were so helpful, when my battery failed on my own bike the guides could not have done more in terms of helping me find a new e bike so that I could continue my journey comfortably. Also, the lunches provided could not have been better and were prepared beautifully by the guides. Thank you so much for providing such a good service all round.

Excellent holiday and service provided from Skedaddle! Our tour leader Jeffery could not have been any better. Very experienced and just fantastic. The whole group bonded really well, and the guides booked us restaurants, so we were all able to eat together. Alex was fantastic too and they both were great at providing lunches during the day

Your two guides really made it for us. Stephen and Ramon were a good combination, excellent cooks and nothing was too much trouble for them. They were supportive throughout of the whole group, managing the differences in experience and mood really well. Bikes and tech support was faultless. Accommodation was generally good. Pazo Marinao in Pala de Rei was outstanding in every way.

The organization is excellent and Dan, our Tour Leader, arranged the perfect weather! Ramone, our guide, is a great fun guy and an excellent cook. He looked after us extremely well. The excellent accommodation makes a big difference after a day’s ride.

It’s difficult to differentiate the days to choose the favourite because Dan made sure everyday was not just a good day but a fantastic day. I can’t praise Dan enough for his all round support on the trip and for looking after each person as he did especially myself. He had a lot to juggle and made it all look effortless. We need more Dan’s in this world.

Dan was fantastic in every way. He was very organised and ensured everything ran smoothly. He took great care of everyone in the group whether at the front or the back and was very encouraging. A really great guy, always smiling and knowledgeable of Spain and the Camino. Picnic lunches excellent.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago requires great fitness and stamina. You’ll be cycling between 30 and 50 miles (48-80 km) per day, sometimes on long and steep climbs. Expect varying terrain, with some sections being uneven, unpaved, or on loose ground. This trip is ideal for those who cycle regularly, and it’s even better if you have experience of riding on uneven/unpaved terrain. If you’re joining this cycling tour, we expect you to be fit and healthy, ready to take on an achievable challenge!

The route follows the Camino Frances as closely as possible. You’ll be riding on different surfaces including back roads, forest tracks, and footpaths. There are occasional sections along the Camino that are loose and rocky, which you can either ride or hop onto the road for some faster riding.

The trail can get narrow and once in Galicia, you’ll encounter corredoiras , beautiful ancient cobbled lanes that can get a bit rough at times. Although most of the Camino is leisurely, there are still a few substantial climbs with frequent ups and downs along the way. There is an option of renting electric bikes, which is what we recommend to anyone who’d like a little boost up some of those hills!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Comfortable, season-appropriate riding or athletic clothing, preferably moisture wicking or synthetic material
  • Padded shorts
  • Peaked helmet
  • Sneakers or sport shoes
  • Breathable outside layer or jacket
  • Plenty of water, water bottle or hydration bladder
  • Daypack with snacks
  • Biking gloves are optional but recommended
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

Group sizes and prices:

  • The group size for this guided tour along the Camino de Santiago is 14 people.
  • There are usually 3 guides per trip, two mountain bikers and one guide in the support vehicle.
  • At least 6 people have to sign up for the tour to run.
  • The cost does not decrease as the group grows.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago can be arranged for bigger groups. Contact us prior to booking.

Min. age requirements:

  • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
  • Children are occasionally able to go on trips with a legal guardian. That said, if you have a young rider strong enough to handle sustained climbs (either riding or walking their bike) of hundreds of feet, and rough terrain, then they may be able to participate on a case-by-case basis.
  • If your group has riders under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

To get to your cycling tour along the Camino, it’s best to fly into Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport (SCQ) . Your guides will pick you up at the airport for the start of the tour and drop you off at the airport on the last day of the tour. This is included in the price, but if you’d like to arrive earlier than Day 1 and leave later than Day 7, you’ll have to arrange transportation by yourself.

We highly recommend that you cover all your bases with both emergency medical and travel insurance. With medical insurance, if you have an accident or medical emergency on or off the mountain, you’ll avoid paying out of pocket for costly expenses. This covers everything from hospital treatments to emergency air transportation and more.

Travel insurance covers canceled flights, natural disasters and other scenarios that may interrupt your travel plans.

We also expect you to respect local regulations and take measures to protect yourselves, your guides, and the communities you’re traveling to. For more information on travel recommendations and restrictions in Spain, please refer to Spain’s foreign travel advice .

If you need assistance selecting the right insurance for your group, let us know and we will be happy to help!

Advice for bikegrims

Here are some tips to keep in mind if you want to be a bikegrim, rather than do it on foot. Before starting with them, there is one thing to keep in mind, doing the Camino de Santiago by bike has a great advantage and a big drawback.

The advantage of doing the Camino de Santiago by bike is that you will travel many more kilometres a day, so that you will need fewer days off to complete any pilgrim route. The flip side of this coin is that the speed of the bike and its own dynamics, provides fewer opportunities to meet other people.

It is important to train

To do the Camino de Santiago it is always recommended to train, but if you are going to do it by bike, it is necessary that you apply your training to it. In this article of our blog of the Camino de Santiago you will find some recommendations for your physical training to make the Camino de Santiago, both on foot and by bike.

Use a BTT to do the Camino de Santiago

Not every bike is valid to complete the Camino de Santiago. Do not forget that you will have to face mountain stages, so we advise you to use a BTT for the Camino de Santiago.

If you don’t have one, you should know that there are numerous companies that rent bikes to ride on the Camino de Santiago. We are among them.

One of the advantages of renting a BTT to do the Camino de Santiago is that they have insurance. Therefore, if the mountain bike suffers any breakdown, the agency will take care of replacing it with another one and you will not have to waste time waiting for it to be repaired.

Choose a time that’s not very rainy

Rain should not be an impediment to making the Camino de Santiago. In our article on the climate on the Camino de Santiago we tell you that it is very likely that in the stages that run through Galicia , you will have to face some stage with rain.

However, in the case of bikers, things change. For two wheels, rain is a great enemy, as the firm becomes much more unstable and is much easier to drift.

If you are not a cyclist with a lot of experience, but you want to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, we recommend that you choose a time with a low probability of rain. In that sense, the best months are June, July, August, and September. FromDecember to February it is when there is a higher volume of rainfall and therefore is the least recommended time for bikegrims.

Find another bikegrim

When you make a pilgrimage, in Santiago Ways we encourage you to do the Camino de Santiago alone. However, we advise you both when it comes to a bikegrim. This is mainly due to two reasons.

One is that on all the routes of the Camino de Santiago you will find numerous places to visit where you will not be able to enter with the bicycle. If you go alone, you will not be able to abandon it and therefore you will not be able to enjoy all its heritage. When you go with another bikegrim, you can take turns taking care of the bikes.

The other is that if you are going to travel many kilometres, you will inevitably have to deal with bicycle breakdowns . If you go with another bikegrim they will be able to share knowledge.

If you can’t find another bikegrim with which to make the Camino de Santiago, an alternative is to join one of the organized groups by bike . Contact us to find out if we have any departures planned in Santiago Ways.

Don’t trust yourself, plan your kit well

It is true that one of the advantages of doing the Camino de Santiago by bike is that the weight of your luggage is not supported by your body , but by the bike. However, keep in mind that the more weight you carry on the saddlebags, the more unstable the bike will be.

If you decide to do the Camino de Santiago using a BTT you will not have so much difficulty in the sections of land. However, if you are not a very experienced cyclist, we recommend that you bring a light luggage or hire a baggage transfer service. Bikers also use it, especially in the stages with many slopes.

Choose a suitable route for yourself

This is the most important advice of all. If you want to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, but you are not used to a mountain bike or you do not have a BTT and do not want to rent one, choose a route that does not face mountain stages.

Although all the routes of the Camino de Santiago can be done by bike, not all are equally recommended. Some of them can be completed even by bikegrims without much experience on the two wheels, but to face the most difficult routes on the Camino de Santiago it is necessary to be used to the mountain bike and have a good BTT.

Stages on the Camino de Santiago by bicycle

In the next section we will tell you about the main routes of the Camino de Santiago and its cycling stages . Assess what type of bike you have to do the Camino de Santiago and what experience you have on two wheels, to choose the best route for yourself.

The Camino Frances to Santiago by bicycle

The Camino Frances is the most popular route and, therefore, it is where you will find the largest number of bikegrims. It is not the most difficult route, but it does have some stages through high mountains, such as the first stage that goes from Saint Pied de Port to Roncesvalles or the ascents to Foncebadón and O Cebreiro, not forgetting the ascent and descent on Monte del Perdón , which is also not easy for pilgrims on bicycle.

Therefore, if you plan to make this route along the Camino de Santiago complete, we recommend using a BTT so that you do not have problems in those stages. Another option is to complete the mountain stages on foot and hire a shuttle service for the bicycle.

Doing some stages on foot doesn’t make you any less a bikegrim. In fact, it is quite comforting to do a few kilometres on foot, after pedalling several stages on the Camino de Santiago.

Stages on the Camino Frances by bike

The Camino de Santiago Frances can be completed by bike in 14 days , attending to the difficulty of the tour and the sights. However, if you want to do the Camino Frances in less time, it is also possible.

In the stage distribution that we propose on the Camino Frances, to the bikegrims, there are several days that face less than 60 kilometres en route. If you feel fit, you can lengthen them thus reducing the number of stages along the route:

  • Saint Jean Pied de Port – Roncesvalles (24 km)
  • Roncesvalles – Pamplona (41 km)
  • Pamplona – Estella (46 km)
  • Estella – Logroño (48 km)
  • Logroño – Santo Domingo de la Calzada (50 km)
  • Santo Domingo de la Calzada – Burgos (70 km)
  • Burgos – Carrión de los Condes (84,4 km)
  • Carrión de los Condes – León (94,3 km)
  • León – Astorga (48,3 km)
  • Astorga – Ponferrada (52,6 km)
  • Ponferrada – O Cebreiro (52 km)
  • O Cebreiro – Portomarín (60,8 km)
  • Portomarín – Arzúa (53,3 km)
  • Arzúa – Santiago de Compostela (38,7)

The Camino Portugues by bike

Both routes along the Camino de Santiago which run through Portugal are the most recommended for cycling, especially if you are not an experienced cyclist. Both paths face few slopes and do not cross mountain stages.

Stages for bikegrims on the Camino Central Portugues

The Camino Portugues, following the central route, can be completed in 10 days by bike. Given the ease of the route, if you do not have 10 days to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, you can lengthen the stages, without much effort , to finish the tour in less time. The stage distribution to cycle this route on the Camino de Santiago Portugues is:

  • Lisboa – Santarém (90,3 km)
  • Santarém – Tomar (62,8 km)
  • Tomar – Coímbra (89 km)
  • Coímbra – Albergaria a Velha (65,8 km)
  • Albergaria a Velha – Oporto (62,9 km)
  • Oporto – Barcelos (59,7 km)
  • Barcelos – Rubiães (51,9 km)
  • Rubiães – Redondela (50,5 km)
  • Redondela – Caldas de Reis (42,2 km)
  • Caldas de Reis – Santiago de Compostela (43,8 km)

The Camino Portugues Coastal Route by bike: stages

If you decide to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, the Portuguese route that runs along the coast can be completed in just 5 days. Or even less. The distribution of stages to make this route of the Camino de Santiago by bike, would be:

  • Oporto – Esposende (50,8 km)
  • Esposende – Baiona (86,9 km)
  • Baiona – Redondela (41,3 km)

La Vía de la Plata by bicycle

Considering that La Vía de la Plata is the longest route , cycling is a great idea. Still, it’s going to take you quite a few days to complete it. In this route, you will have to face stages of all kinds, since it crosses Spain from South to North, therefore the best way to do this route of the Camino de Santiago is to have a BTT.

Stages on La Via de la Plata

The Ruta de la Plata can be completed in 16 days by bike , from Seville. However, unlike the previous routes we have proposed, to complete the feat in that time it is necessary to consider quite long stages.

If you have good resistance, it’s a perfect route for you. However, if you have little time and are not very used to cycling, it is perhaps better to choose another route or start the tour from another point closer.

The stage distribution that we propose below arrives in Santiago de Compostela following the Camino Sanabres. Another option would be to continue to Astorga and join the Camino Frances from there:

  • Sevilla – Castilblanco de los Arroyos (39 km)
  • Castilblanco de los Arroyos – Monesterio (63 km)
  • Monesterio – Zafra (45 km)
  • Zafra – Mérida (65 km)
  • Mérida – Valdesalor (61 km)
  • Valdesalor – Cañaveral (55 km)
  • Cañaveral – Cáparra (57 km)
  • Cáparra – Fuenterroble de Salvatierra (60 km)
  • Fuenterroble de Salvatierra – Salamanca (51 km)
  • Salamanca – Zamora (66 km)
  • Zamora – Santa Croya de Tera (87 km)
  • Santa Croya de Tera – Puebla de Sanabria (67 km)
  • Puebla de Sanabria – A Gudiña (53 km)
  • A Gudiña – Xunqueira de Ambía (66 km)
  • Xunqueira de Ambía – Castro Dozón (64 km)
  • Castro Dozón – Santiago de Compostela (66 km)

Doing the Camino del Norte on BTT

The Camino del Norte is not one of the most recommended routes for bikegrims , unless you have enough experience. It is the second most difficult way and faces various mountain stages. That is why having a btt to make the Camino del Norte is essential.

Stages on the Camino de Santiago del Norte by bike

The Camino de Santiago del Norte can be completed in 15 days, if you are in good shape and have previously trained. In that case the distribution of stages by bicycle would be:

  • Irún – Zarautz (47,1 km)
  • Zarautz – Markina (46,3 km)
  • Markina – Bilbao (51,2 km)
  • Bilbao – Castro Urdiales (54 ,3 km)
  • Castro Urdiales – Santander (80,6 km)
  • Santander – Comillas (59 km)
  • Comillas – Ribadesella (83,6 km)

Other routes on the Camino de Santiago to do on bike

In addition to the previous routes, there are other paths of the Camino de Santiago that you can do by bike . Some of them are:

El Camino de Santiago Primitivo en bici

It is one of the routes of the Camino de Santiago less recommended to do by bike, but it is not impossible. In this article we tell you about the challenges you will have to face, if you dare to do the stages of this route of the Camino de Santiago by bike. However, on the Camino Primitivo to Santiago having a BTT in good condition is essential , so as not to die in the attempt.

The Camino Ingles on bike

The Camino de Santiago Ingles is the pilgrim route that has fewer stages. By bike you can complete the stages of this Camino de Santiago in the blink of an eye.

However, you will not get the Compostela when you arrive in Santiago, since it does not meet the minimum 200 kilometres that you have to do to apply. You can find more about this route in the article we dedicate to the Camino Ingles on our blog.

The Camino de los Faros by bike

This route is not a proper Camino de Santiago , unless once you reach Cape Finisterre, and continue along the Camino de Santiago Finisterre in the opposite direction. In that case it is considered a Camino de Santiago and you can request the Compostela.

In this post of alternatives for doing the Camino de Santiago in reverse we give you more details about this route. Keep in mind that this route is also quite demanding , so if you plan to do the Camino de Santiago by bike following this route, it is also important to have a good BTT.

We hope that with all the information we have provided in this article you will find it easier to choose your route to make the Camino de Santiago by bike . Remember that if you wish, you can contact us to help you organize the Camino de Santiago by bike.

To do this, you just have to fill in the form on our web or call us by phone. You can also contact our team through our official page on Facebook.

What is the best season to cycle the camino

We’re very glad about your interest in cycling the Camino de Santiago.

If you are not a cyclist with a lot of experience, but you want to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, we recommend that you choose a time with a low probability of rain. In that sense, the best months are June, July, August, and September. From December to February it is when there is a higher volume of rainfall and therefore is the least recommended time for bikegrims.

Please have in mind we’re always here to help you organizing any route of the Camino de Santiago once you decide when to start walking.

Best regards,

Had planned on doing the full 500 mile Camino before COVID-19 changed everything. Now would prefer to bike and hike. Is there a way to plan the best way for this option. Thank you for your support.

Hi, Wilbur.

We intend to do part of the Camino by bike, starting in Roncevalles on August 29 and finishing in Bilbao on September 3. Can you facilitate a bike rental for us for that period? – How will this work.

Your answer and advice is greatly appreciated.

Everything you need to know about cycling Spain’s Camino de Santiago

Cyclist on the Camino Trail, Spain

People have been walking the Camino de Santiago trail for over 1000 years. But for most of that 1000 years, the walking bit was necessary. Foot-sore pilgrims couldn’t always afford a horse, so they’d plod from their front door to the shrine of Saint James in Galicia (traditionally, the Camino pilgrimage was from wherever you lived all the way to Santiago de Compostela).

Obviously we’re not limited to hoofing it anymore, but the tradition stuck, and the vast majority of Camino ‘pilgrims’ now do the trek on foot. In 2016, over 250,000 people got their Compostela certificates, and 92% of them were walkers.

But you know what the other 8% did? They cycled.

Why it’s better to cycle the Camino

Two cyclists on the Camino in Spain

Pedal power on the Camino. Photo by Tono Balaguer

Walking the Camino might be special, but it’s not exactly unique. Hundreds of thousands of people do it every year. Cycling the Camino? That’s much rarer.

Turns out there are also practical benefits to pedal power. Here’s a few reasons you should cycle the Camino de Santiago instead.

1. You get more time

Roman bridge in Molinaseca, Camino de Santiago

The big one. Walking means you’ll probably stumble into Palas de Rei, Samos and O Cebreiro towards evening (probably bone-tired and with some truly epic blisters). By cycling, you can speed things up, often arriving at your nightly destination with plenty of time to relax. Take a steamy shower (before the hostel hot water runs out) and have a snooze. Or even better, find yourself a café in the main square, order a red wine and wait for the pilgrims to come walking in.

EXPLORE OUR FULL RANGE OF CYCLING ADVENTURES HERE

2. It’s easier on your legs

Depending on the size of your hamstrings, this one varies from person to person. Cycling the Camino is certainly easier on your joints (for a full fitness breakdown, check our tips below). Cycling uphill might be hard, but trekking 100 kilometres over undulating terrain is tough on knees and ankles. Leave the walking poles at home and let your wheels take the weight instead.

3. You can explore off the trail

The Camino is beautiful, but it’s quite linear. Most travellers hit the major towns (Pampolona, Burgos, Leon etc) and pretty much follow the same well-worn path. Because you can cover more ground by cycling, you can branch out, hitting smaller towns that most ‘pilgrims’ never get to see. Places like the ruined castle of Clavijo (18 kilometres south-west of Logroño) or the Santo Domingo de Silos monastery near Burgos. Reaching these detours on foot can add days to your trip. On a bike? Maybe a few hours.

4. Cycling helps with overtourism

This is an important one. The success of the Camino as a tourist destination is great for the towns along the route, but it’s a little like building a freeway bypass: there are dozens of beautiful, historic towns just off the Camino that never see a single tourist dollar. A few extra minutes riding each day lets you stay in unspoiled and uncrowded villages, where your money can really help locals.

5. You’ll see more Camino

The ultimate reason to cycle the Camino? You literally get more Camino for your dollar. A walking ‘pilgrim’ needs to walk a minimum 100 kilometres to get their Compostela certificate, and most people won’t walk much more than that (unless they’re hardcore masochists). To get your cycling certificate, you have to ride a minimum of 200 kilometres. That means you start from further away, in Leon. It’s a more rounded Camino experience, and it spreads the financial impact to where it’s needed most. You still get the beautiful (and very popular) towns at the end of the trail, but you’ll also get to see the landscape change.

What you need to know before you cycle

1. you need to be relatively fit.

A flock of goats alongside a cyclist on the Camino trail in Spain

You might run into some kids along the way. Photo by Tono Balaguer

Our Cycle The Camino tour has a physical rating of 4/5, which means it requires a reasonable level of fitness. Partly this is down to sheer distance: you’re riding 200 kilometres over the course of the journey (the longest day’s ride is about 70 kilometres). You need to be comfortable with sitting in the saddle for between three and five hours every day. If you ride your bike to work, start taking a longer route. Or even better, a route with hills.

2. Prepare for hills

Which brings us to Point #2. The Camino is an undulating, hilly, sometimes mountainous trail. Our route starts on the plains outside Leon, which are mostly flat, but soon you’ll be climbing and dipping towards O Cebreiro and the river valleys around Samos. It isn’t a never-ending uphill ascent, but it’s not flat either. The roads also vary between sealed tarmac and unsealed gravel.

3. What’s the food like?

A plate of food in Spain

A quick snack at the pub. Photo by Martina Strihova

You’re in northern Spain ! The food is delicious (we wouldn’t run a dedicated food trip up here if there was nothing to eat). You’ll find most towns along the Camino do something called the ‘Pilgrims Menu’, which usually includes a small bowl of pasta or salad, some chicken, fruit and yogurt. It’s quick, easy and delicious (and cuts down on food wastage). Of course, if you’d like to explore, eat garlic wild mushrooms, crush some tapas and drink a few glasses of Tempranillo, that can be arranged too. There’s some good info here if you’re looking for specific food tips.

4. How do I get my bike over there?

Like all Intrepid cycling tours, you can either fly your own bike, or just hire one on the ground. Our bikes are all proven brands, well maintained and specifically chosen for Camino conditions. Check out the FAQ on our Cycling Trips page for more info.

cycle tours santiago de compostela

Buen Camino, Skedaddlers! For centuries pilgrims and travellers have made their way on a vast network of routes across Europe, to reach the shrine of St James at the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.

Many who take on the journey are still drawn by its spiritual lure, but the Camino has so much to offer. Outdoor enthusiasts are increasingly taking to the trail in search of a rewarding challenge that offers an unrivalled sense of camaraderie and achievement.

Whether you set out with a reason, or find one along the way, one thing is for certain, we guarantee you will fall in love with this corner of Spain. Boasting mighty mountains, lush countryside and quaint villages, it has a vastly different feel to other places you’ve likely encountered in the country.  Not only that, the myths, markers and moments with people along the way, are what make every Camino uniquely inspiring and moving…

The Story Behind: The Camino

The Camino’s origins are steeped in Christian faith and date all the way back to the 8th century when the remains of St James the Apostle were supposedly found in Northern Spain. For anyone unfamiliar with this name, St James was one of Jesus’s 12 disciples and the first to become a martyr after he was beheaded in Jerusalem by King Herod.

During his life, St James had travelled to the Iberian Peninsula and spent many years spreading the word of Christianity here. It is believed that after his death, his remains were shipped back to Spain and eventually buried in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. This is why the route is also known as ‘the way of St James’, in fact, Santiago is actually the Spanish equivalent of the name James.

The Spanish King Alfonso II is believed to have been the original trailblazer of the Camino. Setting off from Oviedo in the 9th century he walked to Santiago de Compostela on what is now known as the Camino Primitivo. Since those early days, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have travelled from all over the world to take on their very own Camino journey.

Today there are several recognised Camino routes starting in a variety of different places, including Spain, France and Portugal. Each trail ultimately leads to Santiago de Compostela.

Camino, at the speed of the bike…

Typically the Camino is conquered by foot, however cycling the Camino not only challenges you,  it also provides a perfect pace to explore. Taking to two wheels is the ideal option for those who want to see more of the legendary landscapes, but don’t have the luxury of ample time off.

You’ll pass lots of pilgrims in the morning – it’s typical for walkers to set off very early, so that they can try and get to their next destination in good time to claim a place to sleep. This usually means the trails tend to get a little quieter by the afternoon.

The trails and conditions are also great for a variety of bikes. At Skedaddle we have 4 inspiring ways to ride the route – offering something to suit every kind of cyclist. This makes it a very accessible and achievable challenge for everyone.

Mountain biker riding in the forest with mountains behind

  • Camino Primitivo : Best for mountain bikers Experience the Camino ‘The Original Way’ on this tougher journey exploring more remote trails off the beaten track. The terrain is varied with sections of ancient drovers’ trails, sinuous single track and back lanes. Choose our self-guided or guided trip . If you’re looking for a pedal-assist, we also have an eMTB only departure date for our guided holiday.
  • Bilbao to Santiago : Best for road cyclists This varied journey begins in the cultural Basque city of Bilbao before traversing the coast as we explore the Camino de Norte (The Northern Way) and then head inland to join the mountainous Camino Primitivo, and finally merging with the classic Camino Frances. Our guided holiday finishes at Cape Finisterre but you can also choose a slightly shorter self-guided holiday that finishes in Santiago de Compostela.
  • Ruta de la Plata : Best for gravel riders A real wilderness adventure – this epic gravel route takes you all the way from Seville to Santiago de Compostela along ancient pilgrim routes over high mountain passes and Roman roads and viaducts.

The pilgrim experience explained

Alongside legendary heritage, the Camino comes with some unique features which make this cycling holiday all the more memorable.

Compostela certificate On all of our Camino journeys , you can claim your Compostela – an official document to confirm you have completed the Camino pilgrimage. In order to do so, travellers collect stamps along the way in a designated pilgrim credential (or passport). You can collect stamps in multiple places including accommodation, cafes, bars and churches. Once you arrive in Santiago, you take your passport to the pilgrim’s office near the cathedral, and they’ll sort the rest. For those who travel with Skedaddle, we’ll provide you with your passport at the start of the trip. As far as holiday souvenirs go, we don’t think they get better than this!

Scallop shell signs You’ll not have to worry about getting lost on the Camino, every route is well signposted by iconic scallop shells which help guide the way to Santiago. Commonly found on the shores of Galicia, it’s become the key symbol of the Camino and you’ll pass many pilgrims adorned with these shells too. Our favourite theory is that they were used by pilgrims to scoop up water to drink from fresh springs – luckily we have handy water bottles these days.

Northwest Spain: Ancient, green and gorgeous

As with every Skedaddle cycling holiday, our Camino tours take you out into the glorious outdoors and the northwest of Spain is a place that promises to surprise you. This sparsely populated corner of the country boasts stunning rural beauty; a land vastly different to the modern high-rise resorts that dot the coastline of Southern Spain. Here sleepy villages are nestled in picturesque valleys, surrounded by abundant ancient woodland, eucalyptus forests and the sound of cowbells drifting on the air.

Whilst Santiago is the historic crowning jewel of the tour, en route you’ll discover many ancient settlements which provide a fascinating insight into Spain’s ancient and medieval past. The mountain village of O’Cebreiro, which leisure cyclists encounter on Day 3 , is home to thatched round stone houses which date back 1,500 years.

For those that choose to join our road cycling tour , you’ll start by exploring the Cantabrian coast, home to dramatic cliffs back by lush green mountains. This journey also goes beyond Santiago de Compostela, heading on to Finisterre. This is the most Westernly point in Europe, dubbed none other than ‘the end of the world’.

Food to keep you fueled

All that exercise deserves some healthy indulgence! If you’re joining us on a guided cycling holiday of the Camino , we’ll whip up a delicious Skedaddle picnic each day you cycle, with plenty of locally inspired treats. If you’re on our self-guided tour , keep your eyes peeled for the pilgrim menu ( menu Peregrino ) which you’ll find in almost every café or bar you pass by. These usually consist of a two-course meal at a reasonable set price and provide plenty of fuel for an afternoon in the saddle.

For a true taste of the Camino, we recommend you try:

  • Pimientos de Padrón – Veggies rejoice! The greatest veggie tapas can be found in Galicia. Padrón are small, green peppers grown in the region and are usually mild in flavour. Occasionally you’ll bite into one that may be a little spicy, which adds to the fun of the dish…
  • Caldo Gallego – A potato broth with beans and green vegetables. Often found on pilgrims menus. It’s nutritious and a great way to warm up if it’s been a cold or wet day!
  • Pulpo a la Feira – The seafood in northwest Spain is immense! You’ll find the finest prawns and scallops. But the Galician dish of Octopus with spicy paprika has to be one of our favourites. Traditionally this comes served on a wooden plate.
  • Tarta de Santiago – This almond pie literally named ‘Cake of St. James’ was traditionally baked as a reward for pilgrims completing their journey, but more modernly simply a regional speciality.

Tasty celebratory tipples

Cider or sidra is big in Northern Spain, especially in Asturias, the region’s biggest producer. From pressing to fermentation to bottling, it takes around five months. The process is completely natural and the drink is not carbonated.

The lack of bubbles is what led to the best bit about northern Spain’s famous, refreshing Sidra – the pouring. In Chigres or cider bars, trained Escanciadors will expertly lift each bottle of cider above their head and pour the contents into the glass, two feet below. It’s a strange and wonderful sight to behold but it’s more than a great photo opportunity; the height at which the drink is poured “breaks” the cider in the glass and injects some air to create bubbles. We’ve been told it’s best to drink immediately after pouring and we’ve never been ones to ignore the local advice!

If you’re more of a wine lover, Godello (pronounced Go-dey-yo) and Albariño are both delicious, fruity white wines produced in the Galicia region. They pair wonderfully with a plate of fresh fish too.

All roads lead to… Santiago

The last 100km of the Camino trail become noticeably busier as this is the amount needed to officially claim your Compostela! Whilst more people make the route a little trickier to navigate, don’t let it put you off. In our opinion, the sense of celebration and excitement only adds to the unique feel of the Camino journey.

It’s like a little festival, the Spanish joy comes out to take on this challenge. It’s such a unique experience! Where else in the world do you get this?

The capital of northwest Spain’s Galicia region, Santiago is the final destination. It’s perfect reward for the achievement of completing this world-renowned pilgrimage. The paving stones of the plaza in front of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral is the point pilgrims converge on as it marks the official end of the journey. It’s a place that’s buzzing with life, stories and celebration! Beyond the incredible cathedral (which is definitely worth a peek inside), the city has a really unique and magical feel with lots to keep you entertained.

The Camino de Santiago, or Saint James’ Way is one of Spain’s best known bike routes, and offers a taste of the traditions and history of this 1000-year-old pilgrimage trail. Today people do this trail even though they are not religious. All you need is curiosity and a desire to be at one with nature.

cycle tours santiago de compostela

As the oldest, most celebrated and most frequented route in Europe, it’s no wonder the Camino de Santiago is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Route. The various paths of the Camino traverse many regions of northern Spain, including Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla y León and Galicia. Some routes venture further north along the coast, through País Vasco, Cantabria and Asturias. Every stage provides views of breathtaking landscapes, from the vineyards of La Rioja to the lush, green mountainous scenery found further west.

At each stage of the route there is a new gastronomic experience. Each region has its own unique cuisine.

Let us plan your Camino for you…

Day 1: burgos.

It’s said your pilgrimage starts the moment you leave home. On the first day of the tour, we’ll meet you at the airport, or if you have already arrived in Madrid, we’ll collect you from your hotel at 10 AM. From there we transit by Minibus to Burgos – a 3 1/2 hours drive. Dating back to 884, Burgos rises from the banks of the River Arlanzón and offers stunning examples of Spain’s gothic architecture. Lunch on arrival at Burgos, followed by time to explore the old city centre, visit the cathedral and a short cycle ride to collect our Pilgrim’s Passports. For dinner, we can recommend places that serve tapas and offer typical Castillian specialities.

Day 2: Burgos – Carrión de los Condes | 86 km / 53 miles | 430 m (1411 ft) ⛰

A hearty buffet breakfast precedes every day’s cycling. Our route takes us through the changing Castilian landscapes – abundant with crops, wheat corn hops and even vineyards. We pass through a multitude of charming villages, stopping for lunch at Hontanas. Later we pause at Frómista with its Spanish Romanesque style churches to end the day’s cycling at Carrión. Overnight stay and dinner are at the Hotel Real Monasterio de San Zoilo, a spectacular place with gothic cloister and a church incorporated.

Day 3: Carrión de los Condes – León | 48 km / 30 miles | 178 m (2579 ft) ⛰

Today’s ride takes us past more charming villages to reach Sahagun where we stop for lunch. This is followed by a minibus ride to León, a city founded in the year 68 AD. Our overnight stay is at the magnificent Hotel Parador Hostal San Marcos with its splendid Renaissance façade. A city with abundant architectural richness, Leon also has multitude of bars. We can recommend places for drinks before dinner. Don’t miss Leon cathedral, a gothic gem with imposing stained glass windows. Dinner at the Parador.

Day 4: León – Villafranca del Bierzo | 65 – 85 km / 40 – 53 miles | 912 m (2992 ft) ⛰

Day 5: villafranca del bierzo – portomarín | 60 – 80 km / 38 – 50 miles | 1093 m (3586 ft) ⛰.

From Villafranca we cycle about 29 km / 18 miles towards the mythical O Cebreiro pass stopping in Las Herrerías at the foot of the most demanding peak along the western Camino. You can opt to cycle up to the pass, or take the minibus. In this charming mountain village we lunch on hearty regional specialties, accompanied by exceptional views over Galicia. There follows a brief minibus ride to Monte de Poio where we remount the bikes to follow a route through Atlantic forests scattered with small villages, to arrive at Sarria. We finish with a leisurely minibus ride through beautiful countryside to arrive Portomarín, a town originally submerged by the River Miño dam – and rebuilt on the crest of a hill overlooking the reservoir. Dinner and overnight accommodation is in the new town or at one of the many hotels nearby.

Day 6: Portomarín – Santiago de Compostela | 47 km / 29 miles | 511 m (1677 ft) ⛰

Today starts with a minibus ride to Arzúa, from where we cycle the final 28 miles of the Camino. This final day of our pilgrimage is short but challenging – four hours cycling ending in Santiago at the Pórtico de la Gloria (Façade of Glory) by the cathedral – an unforgettable view. We proceed to the Pilgrim’s office, where you collect your official document: a fine certificate confirming that you have completed the pilgrimage. Our accommodation is at the Hotel Palacio del Carmen or the Parador Hostal Reyes Católicos (both 5 stars). Santiago de Compostela was historically the third most important pilgrimage city, after Jerusalem and Rome, and still attracts pilgrims from all over the world to this day. Our hotel is centrally located, convenient for exploring the streets and bars of the historic centre. Later we dine at the Parador’s restaurant to celebrate our completion of the cycling pilgrimage adventure together.

Day 7: Santiago de Compostela – Madrid

After breakfast, we return to Madrid by minibus, stopping for lunch around mid-day. The approximate travel time is 7 hours. Our evening on arrival in Madrid is free; if you’re up for it we’ll recommend all the best places to explore on your last night.

Day 8: Madrid – End of Trip or Extension

Today we return to Madrid by minibus, stopping for lunch around mid-day. The approximate travel time is 7 hours. Our evening on arrival in Madrid is free; if you’re up to it, we’ll recommend all the best places to explore on your last night.

Departure every Sunday: April 21st / June 23rd / September 1st / October 6th Minimum participants 6 For other dates, please contact Discount for 8 or more participants

El Camino de Santiago Bike Tour

Santiago de Compostela cathedral

Trip Overview

This is an epic bike tour on many people's bucket list. The road from the French border across the top of northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela was one of the three major Christian pilgrimage routes during the Middle Ages, all leading to the resting place of the Apostle St. James. Winding from the Pyrenees to the gently rolling fields and woods of Galicia, this ancient system of trails and roads is now the most popular long-distance trail in Europe, known for its stunningly varied landscape, its ancient villages, beautiful meadowlands, rolling hills, the famous vineyards of the Rioja region, and a treasure trove of historical sites, churches and cathedrals, religious art and some of the most extraordinary architecture in the Western world. Add to this the wonders of such beautiful towns as Pamplona, Burgos, Leon and the wondrous city of Santiago de Compostela, and you have a magical and fascinating bike tour indeed. The basic concept of this tour is to stay on or next to the traditional Pilgrimage route, so at times you will need to decide between riding a somewhat challenging section of the pathway or taking a paved option, and there are locations where we will need to transfer you short distances by van. We are also fortunate that this spectacular section of the Camino affords us the opportunity to offer you the full range from modest 3-star hotel properties to some of the most elegant in northern Spain. Surfaces for this tour: 87% Paved and 13% Gravel.

From start to finish, check out the route.

Dates & pricing, prices are per person based on double occupancy (2 people in one room). single supplement for private room is listed at the top of this page. a deposit of $500 holds your reservation for most tours. for weekend tours, the deposit is $300., what’s included.

All transfers during the tour, a wine tasting, 10 nights' lodging, 8 dinners (you are on your own for dinner two nights), 10 breakfasts, 2 lunches, bicycle and helmet, transfer on day one from Pamplona to Roncesvalles, transfer on the final day to Santiago Airport. Airfare not included.

Cycle the Camino Portugues Coastal Route: Porto to Santiago

Avatar

A vibrant coastal city in the north of Portugal, Porto has loads to offer and is well worth an extra night to fully explore the city. Meander through the medieval streets of the Ribeira District and take a relaxing boat ride on the Douro river. Cross one of the many bridges to visit Vila Nova de Gaia where the port wine houses are located, offering tastings and tours of their cellars.

This picturesque coastal town sits on the estuary of Vigo where the Mino river enters the bay. Watch the sunset from the old Monterreal Fort which is now a Parador. Take a stroll between the small beaches, sparkling seafront, and the narrow streets of the old town. Discover the town’s many cafes and restaurants.

It is said the essence of Pontevedra is its hospitality.  The embodiment of this is the Capela Da Virxe Peregrina which is recognised as a National Monument.  What makes the Church unique and deeply connected with the Camino is the scallop shell shaped floor plan.  This is not all Pontevedra has to offer, however. Explore the tree-lined avenues, discover the delicious food and enjoy the buzz of life around the historic centre.

We’ve have a personal connection to Portugal and absolutely love exploring it on 2 wheels!
Cycling Country has always enjoyed running tours on the Camino and in Portugal for many years
Portugal’s coastline and Spain’s Galicia, are firm personal favourites

Cycle on the Camino de Santiago

Day 1. PORTO

Start your Portuguese Camino cycle tour in Porto, its historical centre, a UNESCO Heritage site. Enjoy wonderful monuments and delicious culture of food. The Douro River has fed this city for centuries, with its Port wine industry and you can wander over to the other side and visit it’s wine cellars and caves ( caves de vinho ) there to have a tasting. Porto’s architecture is a marvel of styles and the Art Deco tilework and buildings are fun to experience. Read about it in The Zone, our blog.

Day 2. PORTO TO BARCELOS

Ride: 70 km | Elevation Gain: 578 m | 85% Asphalt / 15% Unpaved Start your route, heading to medieval Barcelos, on the River Cavado in the Minho valley.  Known for its ceramics and famous pottery cockerel (the icon of Portugal), it is a lovely little town to wander. If you miss its monthly Monday market, visit the small Museum of Pottery for an idea of its arts and crafts (Museu de Olaria). The town’s 14th century royal importance, saw many of its monuments built and they are interesting to see.

Day 3. BARCELOS TO PONTE DE LIMA

Ride: 34 km | Elevation Gain: 430 m | 80% Asphalt / 20% Unpaved Your next destination on the Camino, will be the small town of Ponte de Lima, which is the oldest village in the country and full of legends. It is most famed for the enchanting 24-arch Roman bridge that has given safe passage to Camino pilgrims for years. Lovely mansions and riverside walks mark this town as does Vinho Verde, a refreshing drink, produced locally.

Day 4. PONTE DE LIMA TO VALENCA

Ride: 35 km | Elevation Gain: 711 m | 55% Asphalt / 45% Unpaved The mountains surrounding, the Teos-Montes, where eagles fly high and wolves once ran free, is a wild landscape. You are travelling to Valenca, a town which has 5km of fortifications built in the 17 th century to protect them against the Spanish. Situated on the River Minho, the views from the ramparts are a 360 degree feast.

Day 5. VALENCA TO PONTEVEDRA

Ride: 54 km | Elevation Gain: 713 m | 65% Asphalt / 35% Unpaved Over to Spain! What an exciting thing it is to cross borders via bicycle and to top it off, cross a bridge built by Eiffel in the 19 th century. The route today takes you through the deep forests of Galicia until you break out and afforded views of Atlantic waters coming inland. Pontevedra is an interesting city which has an ancient heritage and a medieval centre, where the higgledy piggledy plaza buildings with their red tiled roofs, are enchanting.

Day 6. PONTEVEDRA TO PADRÓN

Ride: 40 km | Elevation Gain: 419 m | 80% Asphalt / 20% Unpaved Cycling along today through large forests and Galixian valleys.  It is a rural area passing nice villages such as Roman Caldas de Reis, with its impressive glass windowed Balneario situated on the River Gandra. Continue on to Padrón, the penultimate stop on the Camino, and a town steeped in legend about St. James. 10 th century Vikings and Normans, both tried to overcome this place but its most famous export is the pimientos de Padron – a delicious dish of fried green peppers and salt.  However, even these are unpredictable, while most are mild tasting, some do have a kick, thus the Galician saying, Os pementos de Padrón, uns pican e outros non” (“Padrón peppers, some are hot and some are not”).

Day 7. PADRÓN TO SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

Ride: 25 km | Elevation Gain: 419 m | 75% Asphalt / 25% Unpaved This is a highlight to all travellers whose destination is Santiago de Compostela. Thrilling, there isn’t another word to describe how exciting it is to enter this city. Of course, a very holy city for Christians, but in its own right, an elegant pale stone city with many monuments to explore as well as excellent eating to try out. Stand in the Obradoiro Square is among the largest plazas in Galicia and serves as an imposing symbol of Santiago de Compostela with its historical buildings. The Cathedral, the Parador hotel (former royal hospital), Neoclassical palace, now town hall and 16 th century College are inspiring.  It will certainly be a memorable moment for you.

Day 8. ONWARD FROM SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

Unfortunately, your trip has come to an end and your transfer back to Porto airport will be awaiting this morning. We hope you enjoyed your cycle trip through Portugal and Spain!

This Portuguese Camino cycle tour is an epic journey, so we want you to approach each morning fully rested and ready to go. Our Self-Guided Camino bike tour hotels are carefully chosen to ensure this.

The hotels are exceptional and reflect the charming regional style and comfort in order to get revitalised for the next day’s bike ride. On this trip we have a selection of Highlight Hotels (4-3 star hotels) and Boutique spots (smaller, family run places which are charming and often historical).

Traditional Style hotel in Porto - Cycling Country Tours

“I found Cycling Country, Maggi in particular, to be extremely responsive via email from my initial inquiry until after my ride ended. This was particularly helpful when small problems arose during and after the ride, and because I ended up having to do the ride alone. My cycling partner contracted COVID a week prior to our departure. Though 2 riders are required for a self-guided ride, Cycling Country encouraged me to continue with my ride solo. This trip was well organized, the hotels, luggage transfers. The Ride with GPS app as well as the small guide book provided interesting and useful information about the area that day, and restaurant recommendations. The lodging was good, and each hotel or inn provided breakfast and a picnic to take for the day’s ride. The lunches were substantial enough to fuel the day’s ride. The ride itself was beautiful and the weather couldn’t have been better! I would work with Cycling Country again. I felt well supported, and confident about Cycling Country’s knowledge and skills.” J & Robyn W – Illinois, USA – May 2022

 Tour Description   Daily Program

Daily program

Day 1: Leon Your tour begins in the heart of Leon, a city steeped in history. One of the city's most iconic landmarks, the León Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. It is renowned for its intricate stained glass windows, elaborate carvings, and stunning sculptures and is the perfect symbolic beginning to your journey.

Day 2: León - Astorga (33 miles/53 km) Pedal into the pilgrimage as you leave León and venture through idyllic villages and scenic landscapes toward Astorga. En route, you'll encounter the magnificent Episcopal Palace, an architectural gem often referred to as the "Palacio de Gaudí." Its blend of neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance, and modernist styles is a sight to behold, reflecting the rich history of Astorga.

Day 3: Astorga - Ponferrada (37 miles/59 km) Today's journey leads you through the picturesque Bierzo Valley, a tapestry of rolling hills and vineyards. As you cycle, the lush green scenery and cultivated fields create a serene backdrop, and the occasional climbs offer a sense of achievement rewarded by stunning views. The Templar Castle awaits in Ponferrada, a symbol of history etched in stone.

Day 4: Ponferrada - Las Herrerias (27 miles/43 km) The route is challenging yet exhilarating as you ride through the Galician mountains. Dense forests and winding paths immerse you in the beauty of the wilderness. This section of the route offers a unique opportunity for introspection and reflection in the solitude of the mountains.

Day 5: Las Herrerias - Sarria (31 miles/49 km) Descending from the Galician mountains, today's ride offers a change of pace and a chance to savor the beauty of the Galician countryside. You cycle on rolling hills, through lush meadows, and fields. Arrival in Sarria marks a significant milestone on the Camino.

Day 6: Sarria - Arzúa (47 miles/75 km) Charming hamlets and cafes dot the scenic route, offering glimpses into the region's cultural fabric. The day's destination, Arzúa, has retained much of its traditional Galician architecture and charm. Treat yourself to the local cheese, "Queixo Arzúa-Ulloa," a soft, creamy cheese made from cow's milk and integral to local cuisine.

Day 7: Arzúa - Santiago de Compostela (24 miles/39 km) The final leg of your journey brings a sense of accomplishment as you approach Santiago de Compostela. Passing through picturesque villages, you'll arrive at Monte do Gozo, a hill offering panoramic views of the city and its iconic cathedral spires. As you descend toward Santiago, the cathedral stands tall, symbolizing your pilgrimage's culmination.

Day 8: Departure With lifelong memories, you bid farewell to Santiago de Compostela. As you leave, you carry the stories, landscapes, and reflections that have enriched your Camino experience.

Surface and terrain

Beginning with easy urban pathways in León, the route gradually shifts to the rolling hills of Astorga and Ponferrada. As the journey progresses and leads you to O Cebreiro, the terrain transforms into steep mountain climb. Bike Tours Camino de Santiago

Cycle the legendary Way of St. James on a spectacular biking journey across the north of Spain. Our bike tours along the Camino de Santiago are the ideal vacation for anyone with a sense of adventure and an interest in history, art and culture.

This year Galicia will be celebrating Xacobeo, also known as the Holy Year or Jubilee Year. Pilgrims from all over the world anticipate the Holy Year as the Camino de Santiago fills with cultural events and festivals. It’s the perfect trip to take, post-pandemic, to escape from daily-life, reconnect with nature, and self-reflect.

Xacobeo 2021– The definitive 2021 trip. Read our blog post here

The origins of the Camino de Santiago can be traced all the way back to the beginning of the 8th century, when Christians first started the pilgrimage to the shrine of St James, whose remains had supposedly been carried by boat from Jerusalem and buried in Santiago de Compostela. Over the years it has converted into one of the most acclaimed treks for modern day pilgrims, adventure travelers and bicycle tourists alike. In 1987, the Camino de Santiago was named the first European Cultural Route by the Council of Europe, and in 1993 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At Bike Spain Tours we offer guided and self-guided tours of the Camino de Santiago with two different options to see some of the most beautiful parts of this unforgettable journey. You can start either in Burgos , the former capital of Castile founded in the 9th century, or in León , another historical city with a splendid cathedral and pleasant old quarter. Take a look to see which tour suits you best!

ALSO AVAILABLE BY E-BIKE.

Bikers on the Camino De Santiago tour

Biking is the best way to experience the Camino in a much shorter time frame than trekking if this is on your bucket list. You still get the Pilgrim feeling in every way, but stay in set places with great meals.

This is the classic example of "value for money". Never once did we have a concern about the equipment, our safety, the route, our lodging, the food, our luggage transfer.

The Camino de Santiago – the Way of St. James – is the name of the pilgrimage route to the shrine of the apostle St. James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northwest Spain. Our tour begins in Pamplona (famous for the Running of the Bulls). Rolling through the storied hills of the Spanish Pyrenees, never-ending vistas of grapevines signal transition into the wine-rich region of Rioja. Sample from the Pilgrims’ Wine Fountain. Tour the Gothic cathedral in Burgos and the tomb of Spain’s most famous son, El Cid. Now ride into Castilla Leon: wide open plains, farmland, and grassy hills as far as you can see. Take a day to relax and explore the shopping capital of Leon, an ancient, amazing city. (The cathedral’s stained-glass windows are massive – the second largest collection in Europe – and took 300 years to complete.) Ride to Galicia’s mountains and forests near the end of your pilgrimage. Closer to Santiago, the number of pilgrims on the trail increases; they’ve been walking for a month! The awesome sight of the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela signals the completion of our adventure. Have a farewell dinner to celebrate and bid your fellow pilgrims “Buen Camino.” Lodging is included for this last night; sleep in, enjoy breakfast and then head to the airport on the 15th day.

Our May/June tour dates are best for wildflowers and green landscapes. September tours are best for the grape harvest, of course! Ask for our Guest Information Packet for more special information about how this pilgrimage ride differs from our other tours.

PEDAL HAPPY : Please see  the “VERY IMPORTANT! SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS” section of our Guest Information Packet for more information about how this “Pilgrimage Bike Tour” differs from our normal departures. Luggage service is provided, but there’s no daily support van. We carry what we need for the day on our bicycles and we cycle on a variety of surfaces: single-track trails, gravel roads and pavement. The rental bikes are hard tail 29’er mountain bikes with front suspension, so some familiarity with off-road cycling is recommended.

*E-bikes: Electric-assist bicycles are available as an option for an additional $200.00 for the tour.

Meet your fellow pilgrims at Hotel Europa. Head out for a tapas dinner to kick things off!

Hotel Tres Reyes, Pamplona

Meet us this afternoon in the salon at Hotel Europa, your lodging for tonight and tomorrow. After introductions, all ’round and an overview of the week, head out for a fun tapas dinner to kick off the journey!

Ride Roncesvalles to Pamplona

– Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

+1531 ft / -3495 ft

Transfer to Roncesvalles on the French border in the Spanish Pyrenees. Head for the pilgrims’ office. Get your Pilgrim’s Passport and your first official Camino de Santiago stamp. Ride out of the mountains, through the village near where author Ernest Hemingway fished the streams for trout. Have lunch in Zubiri, next to the river where Martin Sheen drops his backpack into  The Way . Bicycle the paved path next to the river back to our starting point in Pamplona. Enjoy dinner in an unforgettable setting, hosted by Nunci, owner of Restaurant San Ignacio.

Pamplona to Estella

Hospederia Chapitel

+3168 ft / -2814 ft

Ride out of the ancient city of Pamplona past the Town Hall, the start line for the running of the bulls. A ridgeline of windmills draws closer as we climb to the viewpoint at Alto de Perdo. Enjoy a long downhill all the way to Puente La Reina. Have lunch a bridge built by the Romans that has stood for well over a thousand years. Wind your way into Estella, through small towns and the beginnings of vineyards. Explore the town before savoring a dinner prepared by one of the most passionate chefs in all of Spain.

Estella to Logroño

Hotel Husa Bracos

+2302 ft / -2948 ft

Ride up, down, and all around, dipping and diving through the vineyards of Rioja. Little pueblos spot the countryside; walkers scatter across wide-open fields. Storks nest on the church in  Los Arcos , signaling our picnic spot for lunch. Bicycle the paved trail into Logroño, lined with statues welcoming us and saluting the efforts of the ‘peregrinos’ (pilgrims.) Tonight: Relish the hustle and bustle of wealthy Logroño and the “foodie nirvana” of the Tapas Tour.

Logroño to Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada

+2702 ft / -1858 ft

Making your way out of the city of Logroño, take the trail past a popular fishing spot. Ride past a vineyard with an unusual scarecrow: a bird-of-prey sound machine to keep the crows away. Explore Navarette’s hilltop church , with a breathtaking surprise inside. Traverse the vineyards of a large regional co-op. Bask in the sun at the lunch stop in Najera, next to the river in the heart of town. Do your best not to overeat (good luck!). Tonight’s dinner in The Parador  in  Santo Domingo  de la Calzada – a former pilgrim’s hospital – is always stunning.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada to Burgos

Norte y Londres

– Breakfast – Lunch

+2671 ft / -1951 ft

Take an epic route today: Santo Domingo to San Juan de Ortega sees the ecosystem change from grassy farmland to mountains and trees. Pass through Atapuerca, the UNESCO World Heritage site whose caves cradled the remains of the earliest-known human beings in Europe. Be welcomed by the high-plains city of Burgos and its over-the-top Gothic cathedral. Dinner is on your own tonight: The gravel-voiced waiter and his perfect steaks at Meson La Cueva come highly recommended.

Burgos to Carrion de Los Condes

Hostal La Corte

+1877 ft / -2005 ft

Pedal wide gravel paths meandering across high plains. Skies as big as Montana’s occupy the horizon today and waves of grain and grass blanket the landscape. Ride through the massive and haunting remains of the Manasterio de San Antòn as we make our way to lunch in equally picturesque Castrojerìz – one of the most photographed places on the Camino. Follow a series of canals to another stop – “2nd lunch,” as we like to call it – in Fromista. The chocolate cake here is too good to miss! In the small town of Carrion de los Condes, we stay in a family-run hotel tonight and are treated like … well, family, of course!

Carrion de Los Condes to Leon

La Posada Regia

+1931 ft / -1840 ft

Hit the halfway point in the journey just before lunch today. Watch birds of prey hunt over the cornfields as you pedal toward Leon. The high-speed train to Madrid zips by, full of people preparing to start their pilgrimage there. Stay right in the ancient city, just a couple of blocks from the cathedral. Ice cream shops beckon after a long day in the saddle. Feast on Italian fare tonight: the friendly staff at Baccolino will make you want to come back again every day for the rest of your life.

Enjoy Leon: The sights. The sounds. The shopping!

– Breakfast

Enjoy a well-earned day off the bike in Leon. Shopping, massage, sightseeing, relaxing – all await today. It’s a fun city with centuries of history to explore. Spend the morning walking from cafe to cafe sampling coffee and pastries. Explore the city while doing a little shopping. Have lunch outside at a sidewalk cafe. Tour the cathedral in the afternoon. There’s lots fit in on this day off.

Leon to Rabanal del Camino

Posada el Tesin

+2279 ft / -1247 ft

Back in the saddle, leave the city behind. Roll through Hospital de Orbigo with its well-preserved Roman bridge. Stop for lunch within sight of the cathedral in Astorga. The house next door – designed by famed Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi i Cornet – is one of his most beautiful private residences. Head into new scenery on the exit from town: lavender fields and mountain scrub trees. Spend tonight in the tiny town of Rabanal del Camino, with fewer than 100 year-round residents. Enjoy views of tomorrow’s mountains, beckoning from every window.

Rabanal to Villafranca del Bierzo

Posada Plaza Mayor

+2246 ft / -4419 ft

Start the morning with a brisk climb up to the  Cruz de Ferro , the highest point on the Camino de Santiago. Legend has it that if you add a stone that you’ve brought from home, you may leave your burdens here and prepare for rebirth on the remainder of your journey. Didn’t bring a stone from home? It’s okay to bring one from a little closer. Traverse the ridge line on the way to a stop at the colorful Refugio in Manjarin . Welcomed by a bunch of friendly dogs and cats, stop for a photo, and some refreshments. Enjoy the 20 kilometer downhill to lunch in  Molinseca . Visit one of the best-preserved Templar castles in the world in Ponferrada  before rolling through cherry orchards into  Villafranca de Bierzo .

Villafranca to Sarria

Hotel Alfonso IX

+4768 ft / -5005 ft

Ride the most mountainous day of the journey today. Begin with a mellow hour of cruising through a deeply-cut valley leading towards the pass. Settle in for the long steady climb up to Cebriero. What a feeling of accomplishment – and a healthy need for a hearty lunch! The three-course lunch at the top of the mountains will do the job nicely, thank you. Roll through the hills after lunch, past the Albergue in Triacastela, welcoming cyclists with a bicycle hanging on an exterior wall. Continue riding the path as it slices right through farms – with chickens running everywhere – on the way to the transportation hub of Sarria. Feeling brave?  A Fred Flintstone steak can be yours for dinner! Tonight’s restaurant specializes in char-grilling very ample portions to perfection.

Sarria to Melide

+4126 ft / -4105 ft

Deep in the heart of Galicia, the hills are a mixture of forests and centuries-old family farms separated by stacked rock fences. The scent of eucalyptus fills the air; its bark and leaves blanket the trail. Portomarin, our lunch town, sits on top of a hill next to a former lake that is now a lush valley. Stay tonight in Melide, just a short 52 kilometers from tomorrow’s destination, the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Melide to Santiago de Compostela. A certificate, a final celebration! Buen Camino!

Costa Vella

2,964 ft / -3,572 ft

You’re almost there! The feeling of enthusiasm is palpable. Cross several small stone bridges over tiny streams on today’s journey. Eucalyptus forest thickens, shading the trail as you near the final hill up to the airport. The last few miles seem endless – then suddenly you arrive at the John Paul II Monument at Monte do Gozo. This signals the first glimpse of the city. Get your final stamp here, then coast downhill into Santiago. The square in front of the cathedral is alive with activity. Your fellow pilgrims arriving there congratulate each other and take photos. Set your bike down for a bit. Take time to explore the cathedral – final stop on your journey – while the guides head to the Compostela Office to get your certificate for completing the Camino de Santiago. Our farewell dinner will be filled with toasts and tales of The Way. Buen Camino, Amigos! Tonight’s lodging at Costa Vella is included.

Sleep in, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and then head to the airport anytime you wish.

Cycling The Camino de Santiago Self-Guided

Hybrid bike | self-guided | historic.

The Camino de Santiago, also known as “The way of St James”, is one of the World’s oldest pilgrimage routes. It is a way covered by thousands of pilgrims since the 9th century, when Saint James’ remains were rediscovered in the place known today as Santiago de Compostela by the hermit Pelagius.

There is more than “one” way (“camino”) to Santiago because over the centuries different ways were covered by pilgrims whose aim was to get to Saint James’ resting place. We follow the Portuguese Way. This also has some variations, such as: the Coastal Way, the Medieval Way, the Central Way and the Royal Way. We follow the Coastal Way with the Medieval Way, because it is the most scenic and beautiful of the Portuguese Ways.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago is a 7-day stunning tour from Vila do Conde (Porto region) through seaside Atlantic villages and sandy beaches until we get to the Spanish border. Then we continue along the Medieval Way, through ancient Roman roads, medieval towns, dense woods and centuries old pilgrims’ footpaths en route to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santiago de Compostela.

As the day comes to an end, relax at gorgeous and magnificent Castles, Palaces, Monasteries and Convents that were once inhabited by the clergy or the Queens and Kings and now are converted into exquisite lodgings.

To complete this adventure (for religious reasons or not) you should previously get the Pilgrim’s Credential (Portugal Bike Tours will get this for you in advance). A pilgrim must get at least two stamps per day; you collect the stamps along the way at the hotels, restaurants and churches.

When you get to Santiago you go to the Pilgrim’s Office and show your Credential with all the stamps to prove that you did cycle The Camino (minimum of 200km biking). You are then awarded the Compostela, a document with your name written in Latin that certifies that you completed the Camino!

To cycle The Camino de Santiago, you should use wider tires on your bicycle! We will ride sometimes on asphalt, other times on bike lanes, wood lanes along the beaches and some dirt roads, or even some single tracks and rough trails. Thicker tires have better grip and they will help you to get the necessary comfort and balance when you have to cross Roman bridges that are more than 2000 years old.

The overall difficulty level of this tour is 3, Intermediate (more precisely, level 2.6, between 1~5). It is recommended for “bikers” and “cyclists”. It is supposed that you are in good shape.

There is a well-known sentence that helps us to understand what really is The Camino de Santiago and it says something like this: “It is the Way itself that changes our lives, not the goal”, i.e. it is by cycling The Camino and overcoming the daily difficulties that our inner self is changed, and not the fact that you get to Santiago de Compostela.

Cycling the Camino is giving a bit of yourself! …It is something different, …it is really an experience!

TESTIMONIALS

“Great outfitter for self-led tours: We used the wonderful people at Portugal Bike to ride the Camino route from Porto, Portugal to Santiago, Spain. They did an excellent job outfitting us with great equipment, advice, trail guidance, and hotels on our route. I highly recommend them and I expect I will use their excellent services again.”

William Helfand, 54 – Texas, United States

“My wife and I did the northern mountain bike trip to Santiago a couple of weeks ago. We had an AWESOME time. Here’s a quick rundown: 1) Jose and Cristina are really the perfect guides. Both very friendly and very professional. Very knowledgeable about Portuguese history, culture etc… And Jose is a hell of a cyclist, to boot! 2) Really cool hotels. Obviously, these vary depending on the trip, but we stayed in 3 historic “pousadas,” which were amazing. We also had one awesome new, modern hotel along the way. 3) Some wonderful food. With one exception, all the restaurants they selected were excellent. We had a lot of authentic, tasty Portuguese dishes. 4) Beautiful, challenging, rewarding biking. My wife and I are both in good shape, but neither of us is an experienced cyclist. Jose did a great job of encouraging us and helping us out without being condescending or unnecessarily demanding. We both felt exhilarated at the end of our 220+ km journey! All in all, this was a splurge for us, but one that we will absolutely remember for the rest of our lives! “

Spin – Denver CO, United States

“We did the tour Camino de Santiago de Compostela. This was an excellent adventure that took us along trails with an unimaginable history for those that come from tropical lands. The landscape is completely different from what we can see in Brazil. We were able to experience some of the situations described in the pilgrims’ reports. The pleasant company of the gods, the amazing discovery of the cultural “differences and similarities” between Brazil and Portugal, softened the weariness, the heat during the climbs and the rocks along the way. Everything was very well organized, first class equipment and car, very comfortable hotels; we enjoyed the ride, the food, the landscape and the historic monuments. We thank PortugalBike Team very much.”

Eduardo Preto, 57 – São Paulo, Brazil

“Cycling to Santiago de Compostela was a unique experience. These 2 Brazilian women that were not very well prepared for such a big adventure got to the end with a great satisfaction. The tour was very well organized, with gorgeous views, and wonderful food showing a very rich gastronomy. The guides were very thoughtful, nice and competent conveying a great feeling of safety. We highly recommend this tour and we plan to come back and do other tours with Portugal Bike tours.”

Lucia Miranda, 53 – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Cycling the Camino de Santiago, one of the World's oldest pilgrimage routes

There are many Camino de Santiago: there is the Portuguese Way, the English Way, the French Way, the Finisterra Way, the North Way, the Sanabria Way, the Silver Way and the Primitive Way.

Bike Tour from Porto to Santiago de Compostela - The Central Camino

Highlights:.

Cycling the camino is an epic journey turned bike tour, that started in the 9th Century with the discovery, in Galiza, of the remains of St. James. In 1325, the Portuguese queen Isabel made a pilgrimage to Santiago following a route very similar to the one that today is marked with yellow arrows, crossing the then recently built Barcelos bridge; Now it’s your time to trail the Way of St James.

Start cycling the Camino in the city of Porto, settled in the 4th century during the roman occupation, visit its UNESCO world heritage sites and its unique traditions, architecture, port wines and cellars. Riding the Way of St James, you'll feel like a citizen of the world, where several languages are spoken as one, passing through amazing medieval villages like Ponte de Lima, Barcelos and Valença, with typical traces from the northern Portuguese architecture and art.

The portuguese way of St James is made of trails and dirt tracks, ancient roman roads, municipal roads and even alongside modern roads. It’s of an enormous diversity and there’s always a surprise on every bend. Immerse in the scenario of Minho and Galicia, while cycling the Camino, the roads and trails of the woodland areas, small villages and “pueblos” that still seem to be in the Middle Ages. Enjoy this regions’ gastronomy, rich in variety and flavor, a true feast for your senses. Taste the Port and Green wines, so typical of the Minho region and stay in some of the best hotels in the Way of St James. Arrive in Santiago de Compostela, designated UNESCO world heritage site and admire the shrine of Saint James at the end of your pilgrimage.

After breakfast, start cycling directly after leaving your hotel in Porto, by the Douro river, until you reach the ocean. Your first day in the Way of St James is mostly composed of urban roads, until you reach Leça da Palmeira. From Leça, you'll mostly follow cycle paths by the beach, with no difficulty at all, until you reach Vila do Conde, a beautiful city by the Ave river with great historical interest. From Vila do Conde we'll ride inland, towards Rates, where we'll reach the central Camino, and after which you'll start following rural roads and roman bridges until you reach the centennial city of Barcelos, the city where your hotel is located. Barcelos is a city worth visiting, it has a 14th century bridge and the old historic center still has the ancient cobble stone pavement and plenty of churches, houses and buildings from the 14th century onwards. The architectural styles vary from the Manueline to the neoclassic. Learn about the “rooster legend” and why the rooster became almost a symbol of the Portuguese. Check in at Hotel Bagoeira in Barcelos or the amazing Quinta do Convento da Franqueira, a 16th century Franciscan monastery now turned into a charming guest house. Suggested restaurant for dinner is Pedra Furada. Hotel –  Hotel Bagoeira or Art 'Otel Barcelos (included in “premium” option)

Day 3: Cycling the Camino: Barcelos – Ponte de Lima (35km, 530 meters of accumulated height)

After breakfast you’ll start cycling the Camino to Ponte de Lima, where you’ll have the opportunity to see the changing landscape to a more rural setting, going through woodland areas, small villages and churches in the Minho region till you get to Ponte de Lima, the oldest village in Portugal, sitting by the beautiful Lima River. This village has recently submitted its candidacy to UNESCO world heritage site due to its rich cultural, environmental and historic traditions. Don’t miss out the handcraft works, the pastries and the food. Check in at your hotel in Ponte de Lima, at INLIMA Hotel or Carmo’s House, elected a Small Luxury Hotel of the World. You shouldn’t miss a wine tasting of the local “vinho verde” or green wine at our suggested restaurant for dinner, Encanada in Ponte de Lima. Check in at your hotel in Ponte de Lima, at INLIMA Hotel or Carmo’s Boutique Hotel, elected a Small Luxury Hotel of the World. Hotel –  INLIMA Hotel & Spa  or  Carmo’s Boutique Hotel  (included in “premium” option)

Day 4: Cycling the Camino: Ponte de Lima - Tui (41km, 730 meters of accumulated height)

After breakfast, you’ll restart cycling the Camino guided by the yellow arrows of the pilgrims, the road marks of the Way of St James, and our GPS. Today you’ll have to tackle the "Labruja" climb, although there’s the possibility to go around it, this is the biggest challenge of your Way. We’re still in the middle of the Minho region, a place of lush green, woodlands and forests, great restaurants and wine. You’ll pass by Valença do Minho a fortified city on the banks of the Minho River and facing Spain. From the top of the gothic and baroque architecture fortress you can admire the scenery of this Minho area. Cycling th camino, you'll cross to Spain using the old Eiffel inspired international bridge and enjoy the old medieval quarters of Tui, the Spanish city just across the river from Valença, where your hotel is located, the Parador de Tui. Hotel –  Parador de Tui (upgrade to a superior room, in "premium" option)

Day 5: Cycling the Camino: Tui – Pontevedra (53km, 845 meters of accumulated height)

After breakfast and your first night in Spain, you’ll probably notice that beyond the language, all the costumes, traditions and landscape are very similar to Portugal, at least till Redondela, where the Way approaches the beautiful coastal area of Galicia, all the way till Pontevedra. This is the city where your hotel for the night is located and is also an important maritime city in Galicia, with an elegant historic center that boasts two major monuments, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maior and the church of La Peregrina. Walk in the old town plazas and narrow streets and enjoy the great seafood from the estuary and Atlantic Ocean. Check in at our hotel, Parador de Pontevedra. Hotel –  Parador de Pontevedra (upgrade to a superior room, in "premium" option)

Day 6: Cycling the Camino: Pontevedra - Padrón (41km, 550 meters of accumulated height)

After breakfast, you’ll continue your pilgrimage feeling you’re already getting close to Santiago. You’ll notice another change in the landscape since you’ll be abandoning the coast and returning to inland Galicia, with its lush green woods and forested areas. Your hotel of the day is located in Padrón a village known for being the cradle of Galicia and for its Green Peppers, the Padrón Peppers. Take some time to visit the village, climb to the Santiaguiño do Monte lookout point, visit the botanical gardens or Toxa waterfall and taste the food, If you’re adventurous and it’s in season try the Lamprea. Check in at our Hotel Pazo de Lestrove or Os Lambráns. Hotel – Pazo de Lestrove or Os Lambráns (included in "premium" option)

Day 7: Cycling the Camino: Padrón – Santiago de Compostela (26km, 490 meters of accumulated height)

After breakfast you’ll begin the last stage of your Way of St. James. This will be a small test to your will and tenacity as the route starts going uphill almost from the start. You’ll go through small villages and churches with clear signs that the end of the Way is near. When you arrive visit the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, end point of your pilgrimage. Compostela is a millennial city with places and monuments that deserve a visit, such as its plazas in the central area of the old town, the narrow streets and traditional markets. At the scheduled time we’ll pick you up for the transfer to Porto airport. Optionally you can stay in Santiago de Compostela for the night, enjoying the city, resting and relaxing from the pilgrimage, and transfer to Porto the following day. OPTIONAL night at Hotel – San Francisco Hotel Monumento or Parador de Santiago de Compostela / Quinta da Auga (premium options)

Guided and unguided cycling tours Portugal

Porto to santiago de compostela biketour, the coastal way to st. james - "easy".

This cycling tour presents itself as an easy route to reach Santiago de Compostela, the ultimate pilgrimage beacon in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the most important spots for religious tourism in Western Europe.

Enjoy a city tour with us in Porto, to get to know a little bit of its architecture, heritage and local traditions. After this, ride towards Santiago, passing by sunny and seaside areas such as Esposende, Caminha and Bayona. Have a delight with the famous Arcade's oysters. Know why Caldas de Reis holds such a royalty importance and end this tour in the Square of Obradoiro, where you can see the colossal baroque cathedral where the remains of the apostle Santiago lies.

Route description:

  • Flat for the first 3 days, with a few smooth and short climbs. Hilly in the last 3 days, up and down in secondary roads.
  • 30 % bike lanes and wood walkways, 30% smooth dirt roads. Some cobblestone roads and rough dirt roads, 20 % paved secondary roads with low traffic.
  • 4121 meters of cumulative gap climbs

Itinerary 7 nights / 8 Days::

Day 1: Reception at Porto

Day 2: Porto – Esposende (60 km)

Day 3: Esposende – Caminha (50 km)

Day 4: Caminha – Baiona (40 km)

Day 5: Baiona – Pontevedra (64 km)

Day 6: Pontevedra – Caldas dos Reis (26 km)

Day 7: Caldas dos Reis – Santiago de Compostela (40 km)

Itinerary 8 nights / 9 Days:

Day 5: Baiona – Vigo (25 km)

Day 6: Vigo – Pontevedra (39 km)

Day 7: Pontevedra – Caldas dos Reis (26 km)

Day 8: Caldas dos Reis – Santiago de Compostela (40 km)

Before starting this cycling journey towards Santiago de Compostela, it's almost mandatory to explore Porto, classified as World Heritage and Capital of Culture and Tourism. Join us in a city walking tour and discover part of the heritage this city has to offer. Meet famous and well-known hot spots, such as the bookstore that influenced J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, the magnificent Stock Exchange Market, the blue and white tiles hiding at each corner and much more. Art, heritage and traditions are meant to be found and seen during this short city tour. Accommodation, Hotel 4 stars: Porto Trindade Hotel or Hotel 5 stars: Porto Infante Sagres Hotel (included in premium option)

From our store, based in the “Invicta” city of Porto, we will begin our journey heading to Esposende, a seaside city located to the North. During this day, you will be overwhelmed with seaside landscapes and small “Portuguese rivieras”. A huge variety of fishing villages will be met by us, where we can experience ancient traditions linked to the fish exploration, as well as taste this famous gastronomy. In Vila do Conde, you’ll know why these Portuguese coastal cities were so important during the “el dorado” of the Portuguese Discoveries. Accommodation, Hotel 3 stars: Suave Mar Hotel or Hotel 4 stars: Hotel Axis offir (included in premium option)

We’re reaching Viana do Castelo, another sea docking city that was quite important during the Discoveries’ period. During the XIV-XVth Centuries it was in this precise city that the ships going to Brazil, India, Africa and other Portuguese Colonies were developed. Our final destination will be Caminha. This city finds the shore of the river Minho, making it part of an incredible landscape. Caminha is also very well known for its natural and green heritage, like the sightseeing areas, waterfalls, beaches and the camping park.Accommodation, Hotel 4 stars: Portas do Sol Hotel or upgrade to superior room in "Premium" option

You are going to enter in Spanish territory, ending in Bayona. It’s a city politically linked to Pontevedra where you can breathe the sea breeze. Away from the sea landscape you can also get lost in the old city center. Born from the Romans, the city kept growing towards the coast during the Middle Ages, with an influence from the Catholic Church. Curiously, during the XVI Century, Bayona was raided by British ships, led by the great corsair and explorer Francis Drake who saw an opportunity to establish a commercial and merchant point in this territory.Accommodation, Hotel 4 stars: Parador Baiona Hotel or upgrade to superior room in "Premium" option

This day will encompass the stream of Vigo and will end in San Simon's bay with a watery landscape to feast your eyes on. Always following the coastline, this day will be dedicated to Arcade and its famous oysters. Apart from this delightful cuisine, you will see monuments and sights dedicated to Santiago’s culture, such as the church of Santiago in Arcade (XII-XIII centuries) and roads and paths that will lead to our pilgrimage destination. It’s almost mandatory that, if you are passing by Arcade, you must taste and enjoy the famous oysters produced and harvested in the waters of this region. Curiously, during April’s first week there is a festival dedicated to this traditional gastronomy – “Fiesta de la Ostra” – where the city is filled with tourists and pilgrims to attend this event. Accommodation, Hotel 4 stars: Parador Pontevedra Hotel or upgrade to superior room in "Premium" option

Heading to a pre-Roman city, Caldas de Reis, a province which belongs to Pontevedra. According to historical archives, the first inhabitants were a pre-Roman community that lived from the hot springs of this territory. The name “Caldas de Reis” is connected to the birthplace of Afonso VII, acting in the Middle Ages as a pilgrimage path to Santiago de Compostela. Apart from the rich cultural heritage, like Arcade, Caldas de Reis holds a peculiar gastronomy, such as the “empanadas” of lamprey and the traditional Spanish bread. Since the hot springs accompanied the evolution of this territory, nowadays it is a hot spot for tourism who seeks better healthy treatments for several illnesses. Accommodation, Rural House: Torre do Rio or upgrade to superior room in "Premium" option

You will be met by Santiago de Compostela as your final destination, one of the ultimate pilgrimage cores in Western Europe. Like Rome and Jerusalem, the city of Santiago de Compostela presents us an unique religious beacon for tourists who find in this cycling journey an act of faith and inner-self. Reach the Square of Obradoiro, where you will witness the majestic baroque cathedral where the remains of the apostle are located. Accommodation, Hotel 4 stars: Compostela Hotel or Hotel 5 stars: Parador de Compostela Hotel (included in premium option)

What People Are Saying

18 of us went with Fold-N-Go and it was a great decision. Sergio and crew went well above and beyond in tour support. Coming straight from an Nova Scotia winter with little ability to precycle/train as well as some inexperienced riders the trip was a challenge but was well supported. This was our groups' 3rd European bike trip and by far the most rewarding. We had ZERO complaints! I never fill in these reviews but this is the tour company to select. Sergio is building his company and gave immediate attention to any request no matter how minor. '2 thumbs up!' Alex ... Read more Alex , Nova Scotia ,
I found this trip to be fabulous from start to finish. Sergio, Jose and Pedro went out of their way to be helpful, and to meet the different needs of everyone in the large group. The route had its challenges, with cobblestones, some steep dirt pathways and some city streets to maneuver, but Jose and Sergio worked very professionally to keep the group safe no matter what the terrain or riding conditions. Pedro would meet us with the support van at designated spots to top us up with water and snacks. The bikes were very well maintained, and got the once over by our guides after every day of riding to make sure they were ready to go for the next morning. Our hotel accommodations were very well appointed, (with an extensive buffet breakfast always included), and every day we had a hearty lunch at a restaurant en route, as well as multi-course dinner at each of our destination cities along the way. With the spectacular coastal scenery, the top notch guides, and the camaraderie of the group, this was one of the best cycling tours I have ever experienced. ... A BRILLIANT Lifetime memory provided by Top Bike Tours Portugal! We biked over a week from Porto to Santiago de Compostela! Sergio and the team took great care of us from the moment we arrived. The journey, the path, "the Camino", the way of the Saints from Porto is soo wonderful, along the Atlantic Coast with provincial village scenes mixed with pastoral meadows, beaches, pastures with grazing animals. While TBT Portugal didn't create all of that scenery, they made our trip so easy and pleasurable with our stays in fantastic hotels ( 2 castles!), and bringing us to the city centers to enjoy lunch and breaks. TBT Portugal does a GREAT Job! ... Read more Don , USA ,
My wife and I did the St.James way on bicycles with Top Biketours Portugal, The owner and tour guide Sergio was wonderful. Sergio picked us up at the train station in Porto and fitted us to our brand new mountain bikes. The next day John gave us an excellent walking tour of Porto. We had a group of nine with ages ranging from 84 to 40. Five of the group had e-bikes and the remainder of us had regular bikes.Everyone in the group were so nice and became great new friends. We stayed in some fantastic hotels and two castles. The food and comradely was wonderful. The only trip that comes close to this bike tour was hiking the Inca trail to Michu Pechu. We will come back and do the Southern route with Top Biketours of Portugal. Thank you Sergio for all the wonderful memories. ... Read more David Craft , Portugal ,
My brother and I made our way to Porto to embark on this tour which we were doing as unsupported self guided. The service we got from Sergio and his staff was nothing short of spectacular. Starting from Henrique's guided city tour of Porto to the amazing hotels they arranged to the great bikes they provided, everything was first class. Sergio checked on us during the week to make sure there were no problems and made us feel like friends not customers The one thing I would mention is I would not classify this as an easy ride. ... We did the bike tour to Camino de Santiago from Porto. Sergio and the entire Top Bike Tours have been nothing short than amazing. They are so responsible and prepared, they have lots of knowledge about the path and surroundings, they were prepared with tools, water, snacks, tools and spares to make the trip as smooth as possible. They booked us at the most amazing hotels making the experience even better, people on other tours saw the hotels we stayed at and felt their experience was so underwhelming compared to ours. I had done other bike tours and this was so much better than previous ones. I truly recommend this company. ... Read more Andy , USA ,
The bike ride was a wonderful experience, going through small town villages, and along the coastline of Portugal and Spain. We rode 25 to 40 miles per day on various terrains. The bikes were exceptional for our tour. We met wonderful people along the way and rode along side, new friends from Brazil, the US and Canada. Our guides were exceptional and Sergio paid great attention to detail in our hotels, our meals and all accommodations. He is a very gracious man and he made us feel part of his family. Arriving to Santiago cathedral in Spain was a most uplifting and spiritual part of the trip. You felt the genuine faith among the people and we were grateful to be able to participate in this wonderful pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela . We would definitely do another tour with Sergio and Top Bike Tours. ... Read more Larry Gallegos , USA ,

Uma viagem incrível, com paisagens inesquecíveis. A rota no território português é pela Costa e ao chegar à Espanha a maior parte de trajeto é pela mata. My wife and I have now experienced seven European bike tours in various countries. Six were guided as was this one. This tour is a notch above all the others. You are in the constant hands and service of Sergio and his carefully chosen guides. The biking can be challenging at times. We chose the basic package with the meal plan. The accommodation and meals were excellent. If you invest and trust in Sergio, you will be richly rewarded. He is truly one of a kind. If you are as lucky as we were to be matched with kind and generous fellow travellers, you too may also come away with one or more life long friends. ... Read more Bob , Canada ,

Recently my wife and I traveled with 18 others from Canada to Porto . The bikes were top notch and new or almost new. The guides took very good care of us and we felt safe at all times. They went well beyond what they needed to when I needed medical help(nothing related to the biking) and made the experience as smooth as possible. The accommodations were first rate. I have done a number of biking trips in Europe and the guides and support team was by far the most helpful. I would recommend them to any one. ... Read more Earle , Nova Scotia ,
I recently completed The Way of St. James bike tour, and it could not have been a better experience. We were a large group, over twenty, but Sergio, Jose, Tiago and Pedro all worked incredibly hard to not only keep us all safe and on course but to feel personally cared for in spite of such a large group. I was one of two vegetarians on the trip, and even though lunch and dinner were technically "on your own" our guides took great care to make sure we were well fed. The route itself was beautiful and varied. The first few days were remarkable for their beautiful ocean views. Crossing into Spain, and moving inland we cycled down country roads through small town and villages, and through the woods on beautiful paths. The accommodations beat all my expectations, we stayed in some truly special hotels, a real treat after a day on the bike. The bikes were all in great shape and checked out every night. I had an issue one day with my bike not shifting properly (most likely because I knocked the derailleur after a clumsy little spill that morning) It was fixed immediately and worked perfectly for the rest of the trip. All in all, this was a great trip thanks to the excellent work of Sergio, Pedro, Tiago, and Jose. They provided first rate customer service, but felt like friends! ... Read more Jim Goia , USA ,
We are a senior couple from Canada, ages 71.5 (wife) and 77 that booked directly with the company and chose the basic unguided bike rental package. This included one hybrid bike and an electric assist bike for the wife, second tier hotel accommodation, the shuttle of our personal luggage between hotels, and a walking tour of Porto. We appreciated the personalized service given to us by insuring that we had the right size bikes, providing us with an emergency phone and Garmin GPS unit for route finding, and keeping in contact with us daily via email. All the hotels were able to provide us with breakfast with the exception of the one in Caminha. This latter hotel served breakfast too late and it was in a very noisy location with loud people on the street leaving club(s) between 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. Overall, the accommodations provided met our expectations. The cycling route worked out by the company exceeded my expectations and we appreciated that there was a good attempt to be faithful to the designated Camino which was not intended for bikes. The alternate routing needed in some places worked out really well. The GPS track was a necessity and hugely better than relying on maps. As for the of the itinerary of 6 days, the distances set by the company worked out really well and allowed us to complete each day at a reasonable time (as early as 2:30 p.m. and as late as 5:30 p.m.). Our average start time on the road was between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. with a later start at Caminha because of the ferry crossing times. We truly enjoyed to long boardwalks along the beaches in Portugal. There are challenging sections on the route including steepness, as well as, rough and sandy trail surfaces, the kind of challenge I expected but could be overwhelming for some people. Keeping the latter in mind, I highly recommend this self-guided adventure. ... Read more Lebrun , Canada ,

This is our 2nd tour with Top Bike Tours of Portugal the 1st being the Silver Coast. Sergio put together a fantastic tour to Santiago de Compostela following one of the Camino Trails. Porto is an amazing city to start the rides with plenty of things to do and see and if you have a like of seafood your in the right place. The accommodation was excellent the whole way even staying in old forts, castles and hotels. The bikes were excellent and very comfortable. Having the Garman GPS helps you keep to the trail and are easy to operate. The tour followed the coast on bike trails and then riding through villages and forests was amazing. We passed many walkers on the Camino Trail and found everyone to be very friendly calling out Bom Camino as we ride by. The finish in Santiago de Compostela was incredible, riding into the square seeing all the people celebrating their achievement. There were plenty of places to pick up morning tea, lunches and dinners. Breakfasts were included. I certainly would recommend Sergio and his team at Top Bike Tours of Portugal. ... Top Bike Tours-Trip Advisor Exceeded all our expectations! In early June 2022 my wife and I joined a group of international travelers for an ebike trip along the Camino from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. This trip with Top Bike Tours Portugal was guided by owner Sergio and his assistant João. We were immediately impressed with their great coordination and professionalism during a week of fun riding and exploring. The tour began in Porto with a “meet and greet” at our hotel on the day before the ride to get aquainted and get fitted properly to our ebikes. Being ebike owners, we were impressed with the quality of the equipment and instruction. Our group had many riders who had no experience on an ebike and they all learned very quickly how to optimize the electrical assistance when needed. This would come in handy at various points along our route when we approached an incline or daunting looking hill. The call among the group came to be “Turbo!”when the lead was starting a climb, as this was the maximum assist level on the bikes, and it made the climbs almost effortless‍️ One our first morning of the ride we gathered at the bike shop to begin the first leg of our journey. Sergio and João led us along coast bike paths of beautiful scenery. The route each day was well chosen to be easy and safe for all, with plenty of breaks for snacks and water. An additional highlight for us was that the group was made up of new friends from Canada, Brazil, Australia, Portugal and the US. Our conversations around the table at lunches and dinners opened a window into another world of cultures we were unfamiliar with an excited to learn about. This was an unexpected bonus that created new friendships Everything about the trip was well planned for safety, comfort, scenery and variety, and FUN! We rode on bike paths, boardwalks along the dunes, dirt trails and a very limited number of smaller roads, with the occassional crossing of roads. Sergio and João planned ahead so the support van blocked traffic if we had to make any crossing of a busy road. Our safety was their priority. The trip was also well paced to fit all of our riding capabilities. We can’t say enough good things about our group of riders. We ranged in age from 45-72 yrs and bonded right away This was all due to Sergio being a great lead and João an exemplary assistant. João was a wealth of information on the history of Portugal, its olive oil and cork industries and almost any question you might have. In summary, we have done lots of city bike tours on ebikes, but this was our first long trip(300km). We had a wonderful time and plan to do more trips with Top Bike Tours‍️ If you are considering a bike trip in Portugal we can’t recommend highly enough contacting Sergio and his great team at Top Bike Tours Portugal. You will not be disappointed! Boa Viagem! ... Read more Ron Shea , USA ,
We completed the Porto to Santiago ride via the coastal route which included a very informative city tour of Porto on the first day which was a nice touch, The tour followed a large portion of the Camino way so was on tracks with other walkers. It did therefore require some good bike handling skills (our's improved along the way). The customer service from Sergio was first class. He responded to all our emails very quickly. We gave him some feedback on some of the trails that had deteriorated and he immediately investigated and altered the trails for subsequent tours. We did a self guided tour which relied on a GPS. The maps were VERY accurate finishing right outside the front door of the hotel at the end of each day. Great and varied scenery and very enjoyable. ... Read more Mary , Melbourne, Australia ,
We rode from Porto to Santiago de Compostela May 18 - 24, 2022. We added an extra day in Santiago to explore the Cathedral and get our Camino certificates. The route was scenic and well chosen. The Garmin gps provided and well as the downloaded route in the "RidewithGPS" app made our independent navigation effortless. The accommodations provided as well as the baggage service were excellent. Riders should be aware that the first 3 days are relatively flat but the last 3 from Baiona to Santiago de Compostela contain some tough climbs that will require walking (or pushing) your bike unless you are a very strong rider. Consider an e-bike option if you are a casual rider. ... Read more L.G. Friedricht , USA ,
I had the pleasure of organizing 18 friends from Canada on this extraordinary trip. From day one we were taken care of and totally immersed in the Portuguese and Spanish culture. Sergio, Jose and Pedro provided us with a safe, scenic and inspiring journey along the Camino. The challenge of cycling on the cobble stones and the sometimes-rough terrain made it all that more worthwhile. It in the end gave you the sense of accomplishment, that you earned the Compostela. The mixture of the beautiful coastline and interesting people we met along the way made the trip all that much more enjoyable. In Sergio, Jose and Pedro we found more than just a touring company. We found a group of people who are committed to the customer experience and needs. Along this extraordinary journey we also found folks we can truly call friend: Sergio, Jose and Pedro. This is my 3rd cycling trip and by far it was the best. I would highly recommend this company, this trip and the Camino. ... Read more Mark Mander , Coldbrook, Nova Scotia ,

7-Day The Way of St James Bike Tour- The Coast Path - Camino to Santiago. My wife and I who are the wrong side of 65yrs.did this cycle trip recently guided my Sergio and back up by John in the van looking after stuff like our refreshment needs along the way, light entertainment through pleasant conversation and transportation of our luggage . We had the best fun on a holiday for years despite the physical exertion of cycling approx.280km in 6 days which wasn't a bother urged on by our fellow cyclists a most cheerful sprightly bunch of companions you could hope to end up with without prior arrangement .The comfort of "playing follow the leader "who was our man Sergio was really the icing on the cake and added to our confidence dealing with mixed terrain including main roads and traffic .For non habitual cyclists we really loved the experience and would have no hesitation in doing something similar again in the not too distant future with Top Bike Tours. ... I have been cycle touring in Europe for over twenty years and hands down this was the best trip I have ever taken. Check every box. Sergio the owner takes great pride and makes every effort to make the experience wonderful. Fantastic scenery. The best hotels, one of which was the best hotel I can ever remember staying at. The bicycles were new and performed flawlessly. Every detail was covered from pick up at the airport, fitting bicycles, walking tour of Porto the day before departure on our ride, 4 star hotels, GPS units with route outlined, pick up at the end of our trip and transport back to the airport. Finally I have to add that Sergio's staff were all super friendly and helpful. Except for one day of pouring rain which is out of anyone's control I would have to say the trip was perfect. ... We contracted with Top Bike Tours Portugal for a 10-day trip which included cycling from Portu, Portugal to Santiago, Spain along the beautiful Camino coastal route. Sergio and his team of professionals provided top notch bicycles, support and guidance. They were very detailed oriented, accessible, caring, polite and most of all FUN! I had an issue one day with my bike not shifting properly (most likely because I knocked the derailleur after a clumsy little spill that morning) It was fixed immediately and worked perfectly for the rest of the trip. ... My husband and I had the unbelievable pleasure of cycling the Coastal Route of the Camino de Santiago with Top Bike Tours Portugal. There wasn’t one thing I would have changed about this experience. We are in our 60s, and knew we wanted an experience that would have us staying at nice hotels with warm showers along the way. This and every other exceptional detail was provided by Sergio and his expert team. When we first met in Porto, Sergio introduced us to his crew, our fellow riders, and the bikes that would be carrying us to Compostela. Our bikes were amazing — strong, current, and extremely well-maintained. We were each provided with a saddlebag to carry anything we wanted along the journey. Our luggage was transported by van to the hotels while we made the daily journey by bike. One of the crew would act as our guide, cycling ahead of us and making sure everyone stayed safe and relatively together. We’re so glad we chose that option as we wonder in retrospect how we would have found many of the smaller more obscure trails. By the end of the trip, guides Sergio and John both seemed like family. They each went out of their way to make sure that every person completed a ‘bucket list’ adventure. Thank you, Top Portugal Bike Tours! We will never forget you or the 5-star experience you provided. ... Read more Michelle , USA ,
Sergio and his team did themselves proud - congratulations. This is a bike tour with a difference....from the excellent personal service, to the included walking tour of Porto, to the interesting and varied ride, to the high standard of the hotels especially the absolute gem Torre de Rio at the end of day 5. The ride for the most part follows the Portuguese Caminho way, so is not always smooth and easy, but this is to be expected by its very nature, and adds to the challenge. This is a top class Top Bike Tour. Well organized. Very efficient management and guides, good value for money (even with $NZ), fantastic accommodation and top support along the way from start to finish. Top English, top humour, top local knowledge, top scenery top equipment and top bikes. It was great fun, there were 9 on the tour and it went better than clock work. We were well watered along the way and provided with snacks and fruit if you wanted them. We stopped at interesting attractions along the way museums, fish market, local towns and villages. The distances and terraine each day were well structured and very manageable on E Bikes. Each night an option for dinner was arranged if you wished to participate. These were on the whole exceptional and well priced, better than you would likely arrange yourself. Our party of eight did the eight day self-guided Camino de Santiago E-Bike Tour. Wonderful trip! The scenery was spectacular, the e-bikes were almost new (two of them were brand new), the GPS route finding was excellent, the hotels were all very comfortable, and the baggage handling was flawless. Most of the riding was on dedicated bike paths, backroads, or elevated wood paths. There were a few short sections of sand that required pushing the bikes and a few busy stretches of road (all with good shoulders). Two memorable hotels are Parador de Baiona in Bayona which is inside a castle, and Torre do Rio in Caldas Dos Reis which is in a remodeled 18th century textile mill featuring a waterfall pool and spectacular gardens. The GPS guidance takes you from door-to-door of each hotel on the tour. We got off track at least once per day but with the GPS it is easy to get back on route. I recommend using both the Garmin GPS provided by Top Bikes and the "Ride with GPS" route that Top Bike will help you load on your phone at the orientation session. We had a few days of rain near the end of the trip but fortunately it came in short intense bursts that we could wait out in a sheltered spot. We did the tour in early September so it was quite warm. I recommend taking a bike raincoat and possibly a helmet cover. The panniers provided by Top Bike are waterproof. We are already planning our next self-guided bike tour! ... Read more Chris , USA ,

The Portuguese Road, or Caminho Portugués, is considered by many as the most spiritually connected pilgrimage route. Following the path St James' body took to its resting place at the site of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, the quieter Portuguese path offers a wealth of history and delightful landscapes to discover. While the Caminho Portugués is traditionally walked by pilgrims, it is now possible to enjoy the route by bike. From the lively city of Porto, set on the banks of the Douro River and famous for its port wine production, the journey north travels through small hamlets, past eucalyptus and pine woods, over ancient bridges and through larger market towns dating back to Roman times. You will cross the border in to Spain and cycle into the fabled town of Santiago de Compostela.

Minor roads with reduced traffic are customary on this trip and we recommend that you familiarise yourself with road cycling in light traffic in order to participate. *For safety reasons, we insist that cycle helmets be included as a compulsory item on your equipment list or provided with bike on request.
