The Dubuque Historical Society operates the National Mississippi River Museum on the far eastern side of the state. The aquarium features collections, exhibits, and live animals that reflect the cultural and geological importance of the adjacent Mississippi River, and all national rivers defining the country.

The Iowa State Fair occurs for 10 days in the first half of August every year, attracting over a million annual visitors from the Midwest and beyond. This massive agricultural expo and community celebration is Iowa's largest event and is easily touted as the best state fair in the county.

For a unique natural side of Iowa, Maquoketa Caves State Park offers a look into the world beneath your feet. Perhaps one of the most quintessential things to do in Iowa, RAGBRAI is a week-long bike race that spans the entire state. The route travels from east to west, and showcases Midwestern culture with friendly people, small towns, and open landscapes.

The R egister's A nnual B ike R ace A cross I owa has taken place for nearly 50 years, and this summer event attracts thousands of cyclists , support vehicle drivers, and racing enthusiasts every year.

Competitiveness isn't the factor pushing cyclists across the state during RAGBRAI. Instead, it's much about the journey along the way and the community celebrations that line the entire route. Small towns blossom with roadside attractions, including live music and fresh watermelon slices. Costumes and customized bicycles are also a big part of the event.

The route changes every year, and the cities and small towns selected for overnight stops transform into a major block party. The entire RAGBRAI route and experience are fun for the whole family, with younger kids (and adults) often opting to ride less than then the average 60 miles the route covers every day.

The Bridges of Madison County provide a scenic adventure in Winterset, approximately 30 miles southwest of Des Moines. These beautiful bridges have inspired countless photographs, numerous visits, and even a best-selling novel turned movie.

Before The Bridges of Madison County became a blockbuster, the bridges were simply a part of life for people living in this area in the late 19th century. Today, six of the original 19 covered bridges remain, five of which are on the National Historic Register.

The 82-mile-plus Covered Bridges Scenic Byway is a great way to tour the bridges, as well as the stunning natural scenery. Three of the bridges require travel on a gravel road.

Group and personal tours of the covered bridges are offered by the Madison County Chamber of Commerce (by reservation only). A culminating cultural experience takes place every year with the Madison County Covered Bridge Festival in October.

Even without the scenic covered bridges, Madison County and the city of Winterset are worth a visit. After spending a sunny afternoon exploring and photographing the covered bridges, it's well worth your time to check out Winterset's Historic Town Square.

Winterset is also home to the birthplace of John Wayne and an adjoining museum dedicated to America's most recognized cowboy, The Duke.

The Des Moines Art Center has provided a venue for locals and visitors to enjoy art since 1948. It features rotating works of photography, sculpture, and painting. The museum also includes mixed-media displays and permanent collections ranging from Georgia O'Keefe to Edward Hopper. Entry to the Des Moines Art Center is free.

The Des Moines Art Center also oversees an eye-catching collection of sculptures in the heart of downtown. The John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown is hard to miss. Field of Dreams , starring Kevin Costner, was filmed here in 1989. And while visiting this Movie Site in Dyersville, you may find yourself asking, "Is this heaven?" Rest assured though, it's Iowa, and with all movie quotes aside, the Field of Dreams Movie Site is a fun location for fans of the film. The site features interactive exhibits, plenty of photo opportunities, and a scenic backdrop.

On select Sundays throughout the year, the Field of Dreams also hosts a Ghost Sunday Show. These movie reenactment events feature costumed baseball players from the past stepping out of the cornstalks to put on a family-fun show.

National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium

History flows through the state's oldest city, Dubuque , which has reinvented its Mississippi River waterfront as a lively destination. Excursion vessels cruise the water, but the cornerstone of the waterfront is the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, where you can experience touch tanks, tour a 1934 steamer and view six big aquariums full of river creatures. Watch for special events (ice sculpture, log rolling) throughout the year.

The "Iowa Great Lakes"

Some people might be surprised by this classic vacation spot 210 miles northwest of Des Moines. A string of glacial lakes covers about 15,000 acres, forming the " Iowa Great Lakes ." Families return to places such as Big Spirit Lake and Okoboji year after year, fishing off docks and hopping on carnival rides at Arnolds Park, a turn-of-the-last-century theme park that's as retro as they come. Okoboji Boat Works, a popular stop between the west and east lakes, offers a swimming beach, a playground and glass-bottom boat tours.

John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park

A donation of more than two dozen sculptures worth $40 million instantly transformed a downtown green space in Des Moines . The Des Moines Art Center curates the collection at the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park , which looks especially fabulous at night, when lights illuminate the oversize sculptures. Enjoy walking through the sculptures, but don't miss the Art Center either (about 5 miles west). It houses an outstanding contemporary collection.

Decorah's Scandinavian heritage

Tucked among the bluffs of northeast Iowa, charming small-town Decorah shares its Scandinavian heritage everyday in quaint downtown shops and at history-rich spots such as the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum . With more than 24,000 artifacts and 16 historical buildings, the Vesterheim is the most comprehensive museum in the United States dedicated to a single immigrant group. Decorah also celebrates its Scandinavian heritage each summer during Nordic Fest, with a parade, music, dancing, tours and more.

Field of Dreams movie site

A century-old farm in Dyersville (27 miles west) made movie history. People still come to sit in the bleachers and run the bases. More history was made August 12, 2021, when the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees played at a temporary ballpark constructed next to the movie location. And another MLB game is expected on Aug, 11, 2022 as well.

Iowa State Fair

This end-of-summer pilgrimage celebrates Iowa's farm heritage within an increasingly cosmopolitan Des Moines. The Iowa State Fair is 11 days of farm animals (the Big Boar!), midway rides, blue-ribbon prizes, a butter cow, crazy contests, live music and fried food on a stick (deep-fried Snickers bars!). The fair's 400 acres can be overwhelming; navigate the sprawl by using free downloadable walking tours from the fair website. Pella's Dutch history

Founded by refugees from Holland in 1847, the pretty town of Pella (about 40 miles southeast of Des Moines) proudly displays its tidy Dutch heritage. The town is home to the tallest working windmill in the nation and the annual Tulip Time festival in May, with a variety of Dutch-inspired events. Tour more than 20 historical buildings and a windmill at Pella Historical Village and Vermeer Windmill. And don't miss the almond-paste-filled Dutch letters at Jaarsma Bakery.

Great River Road National Scenic Byway

A journey along Iowa's 325 miles of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway blasts away stereotypical images of a flat Hawkeye State. The massive river eases around a parade of communities–from tiny towns to busy midsize cities–and spectacular vistas fill the spaces in between.

In southern Iowa, eagles soar above the lock at Keokuk , where wealth made from the river created fine homes and public buildings. The bridges of Madison County

Six of Madison County's original 19 covered bridges remain–enough to have inspired a best-selling novel and movie. A covered bridge festival in October features music, a quilt show, local artists, a parade and guided bus tours of the covered bridges. Winterset , the county seat, is about 40 miles southwest of Des Moines.

Maquoketa Caves State Park

Cornfields and combines feel eons away from the lush and strangely exotic landscape at Maquoketa Caves State Park (30 miles south of Dubuque), where a long wood staircase descends from a concrete picnic area into an almost prehistoric world. Towering stone walls, moss-covered rocks and an emerald canopy unfold around the Maquoketa Caves' 16 caves and crawl spaces. Ducking under low-hanging rocks and clambering along a roller coaster of steps, visitors feel like real explorers. Bring a flashlight-and a towel to wipe mud off your shoes. Check the park website before you go for cave accessibility; Iowa's Department of Natural Resources monitors the bats in the park's caves to help prevent the spread of White Nose Syndrome by humans.

Iowa City's education scene

The University of Iowa is a cornerstone of this community; highlights for visitors include the Old Capitol Museum and the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History . The Iowa City Pedestrian Mall (pictured) is an approximately 12-block area downtown that houses many of the city's best shops, college clubs and restaurants. Prairie Lights Books, a downtown icon, features three-and-a-half stories of books plus a coffee house where writers Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg and Langston Hughes visited.

A burgeoning museum campus is turning this former manufacturing town into an overnight destination for history buffs. Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum tells the stories of America's wars through the lens of Iowans, such as the five Sullivan brothers who died in World War II. Bluedorn Science Imaginarium makes science fun for kids with optical illusions, plasma gloves and more. Rensselaer Russell House Museum , built in 1861, has been restored to 1890s Victorian splendor. All are part of Grout Museum District.

Architecture and music at Mason City and Clear Lake

Ten miles apart, Mason City and Clear Lake have distinct personalities. Mason City appeals to architecture buffs and fans of The Music Man. Frank Lloyd Wright's 1908 Stockman House (pictured) illustrates how Prairie School style suited middle-class homes; the Robert E. McCoy Architectural Interpretive Center next door shows a video on Wright's influence in Mason City. At The Music Man Square , tour the childhood home of Meredith Willson, who wrote and composed The Music Man, and see a replica of the 1962 movie's streetscape. The best stay in town is Historic Park Inn Hotel , the world's only surviving Wright-designed hotel.

In Clear Lake, big-name concerts pack The Surf Ballroom and Museum , best known for the gig Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper played before all three died in a 1959 plane crash in northern Iowa.

National Balloon Classic

Twenty miles south of Des Moines, Indianola (population 14,400) hosts the annual National Balloon Classic , a week-long festival that has graced the summer skies of central Iowa for more than 40 years. Balloon flights, music performances, a 5K road race, fireworks, a parade and an arts and crafts show are all part of the fun.

Loess Hills

The rolling hills on Iowa's western edge host a surprising variety of plants and animals. Enjoy the area from the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway, a 220-mile route that links prairies, parks, forests and overlooks stretching to the Missouri. The Loess Hills Visitors Center in Moorhead (55 miles north of Council Bluffs) offers maps and brochures to help plan your trip.

Cedar Rapids' art and Czech heritage

Regionalist artist Grant Wood lived in Cedar Rapids most of his life, so it's fitting that the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art owns the largest collection of his works as well as the Grant Wood Studio where he worked from 1924 to 1935. Czech heritage also permeates Cedar Rapids (30 miles northwest of Iowa City); in Czech Village , the business hub of the Czech community, try a kolache (filled pastry) at Sykora Bakery , and admire elaborate folk costumes at National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library .

Amana Colonies

In the green east-central Iowa River Valley along Interstate-80 (100 miles east of Des Moines), the seven Amana Colonies have clung to their roots with German steadfastness since 1855. Almost half the residents are descendants of the original German colonists; inns, restaurants and shops draw heavily on traditional foods and handicrafts. At the Amana Heritage Society , ask about custom tours in addition to the five museum sites. Shop for beautiful, classic quilts at Heritage Designs , or find local ham, bacon, sausage and cheese at Amana Meat Shop and Smokehouse.

Ledges State Park

A web of steep trails loops over the sandstone cliffs along Pease Creek as it winds through Ledges State Park. The campground is pleasant (and a few walk-in sites are very cool), but most visitors are day-trippers from Des Moines (40 miles southeast) who come to picnic, hike and wade along the Canyon Road. Parents: Pack extra clothes. The splashy spots where the road goes through the creek are kid magnets.

Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad

The railroad town of Boone (50 miles northwest of Des Moines) is home of one of the state's favorite attractions: Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad, which offers one-hour-and-45-minute excursions, 15-mile dinner and dessert rides, two old-time trestles and a 12-mph maximum speed. Trips start at a reconstructed depot near downtown. Guests can also visit the Iowa Railway Museum to learn about the state's railroading history.

Villages of Van Buren County

Tiny and quaint, 1800s ports line the Des Moines River in southeast Iowa. Hike or canoe in Lacey-Keosauqua State Park (pictured) , or take a leisurely journey through the area on the 85-mile Historic Hills Scenic Byway . 1. Grotto of the Redemption

The largest man-made grotto in the world, this Iowa institution is a must-visit for anyone heading to the state. Frequently described as the eighth Wonder of the World, the Grotto of the Redemption is a series of nine grottos that each depict a scene from the life of Jesus.

More than 100,000 people head to the grotto every year, with some $4 million worth of minerals and rocks having been used to create this beautiful place. The grotto was given a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 and jasper, quartz, topaz, calcite, stalactites and stalagmites can all be seen at the Grotto of the Redemption.

4. Pikes Peak State Park

6. Black Hawk Bridge

Popularly referred to locally as the Lansing bridge, Black Hawk Bridge is a crossing over the Mississippi River from Iowa to Wisconsin. Opened in 1931, the bridge is a stunning piece of engineering, boasting one of the more unusual designs of any Mississippi River bridge. The bridge is named after Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk tribe, who were involved in an uprising in 1832.

7. Crystal Lake Cave

Located five miles south of Dubuque , Crystal Lake Cave is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places to visit in the state of Iowa. Pristine stalagmites, helictites and rare anthodites are all on show in this stunning cave system, which is described by its organisers as a Matchless Wonder. The picnic-perfect outdoor pavilion at Crystal Lake Cave is a great place to relax, while the cave complex also has its own gift shop.

8. Interstate 80

With so much of Iowa being exceptionally rural, perhaps the best way to experience the state at its most natural is via the open road, with Interstate 80 the most obvious option from which to do this.

The road travels all the way through the heart of the state, while visitors should make sure they take a break at Iowa 80, which describes itself as the largest truck stop in the whole world. The truck stop now has a vast array of facilities including a 300-seat restaurant, a barber shop, a 60-seat movie theatre and a huge food court with a range of culinary options.

9. Mississippi River, Keokuk

The Mississippi River is one of the United States’ most beautiful natural attractions and one of the best places to see it is in Keokuk, Iowa. The Keokuk-Hamilton Bridge is one of the most beautiful crossings over the Mississippi River, which borders Iowa for a total of 300 miles.

Fishing is an extremely popular activity in the Mississippi River among the Iowa people, while Keokuk itself is home to an annual American Civil War reenactment, as well as attractions such as the Keokuk Veteran’s Memorial, the Miller House Museum and the George M. Verity River Museum.

10. Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad

No trip to Iowa would be complete without a visit to the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, which has numerous locomotives and dozens of cars. The 4.4 acre park is open during city park hours, which run from sunrise to midnight, with guided tours of the sculptures available from April through to October. Pella is not one of the biggest towns in Iowa, but the Dutch community is certainly one of the most beautiful places to visit within the borders of the state. Pella has been given titles such as Tourism Community of the Year and Corporate Friend of Tourism, with many visitors soaking up the incredibly natural beauty at its Lake Red Rock, which is the largest lake in Iowa.

Tulip Time is perhaps the best opportunity to visit Pella, as this is when the Dutch community comes into its own, while the Sinterklaas Christmas parade and the July Dutch summer festival known as Kermis are also well worth checking out during a visit to Iowa. Among the best tourist attractions in the town are the Pella Historical Village and the Scholte House Museum and Gardens.

Central Iowa may be dominated by the state capital, Des Moines, but there is a lot more to explore in this part of the world too. In conjunction with Kimballton, Elk Horn represents one half of the Danish Villages, the two largest Danish settlements outside of urban areas in the U.S. Elk Horn is home to the only authentic Danish windmill in the entirety of the United States, which was shipped from Norre Snede, Denmark, and assembled by over 300 volunteers in 1976. Situated slightly up the Mississippi River from the Quad Cities, Le Claire has often been voted the best city to take an out of town guest by the Quad City Times Readers' Choice Awards. A town originally founded thanks in part to industry located along the river, Le Claire has grown and changed over the years but still manages to hold onto its Old World charm. Places to Visit in Iowa: Mason City

When it comes to Mason City, there are a few specific attractions that are sure to keep guests coming back time and time again. Home to a museum filled with over 500 marionettes and puppets, this exhibit showcases a large majority of Bil Baird's work as a puppet master. After a visit to the museum or Music Man Square, a tribute to musician Meredith Willson, guests can head to Northwestern Steakhouse for an award-winning dinner and then to Birdsall's Ice Cream for a scrumptious dessert of hand-made ice cream, a local favorite in Mason City since the 1930s.

Founded by European fur traders and maintained by soldiers, Muscatine eventually bloomed and boomed thanks to the lumber harvesting and transporting industry. Many years passed with lumber as Muscatine's primary industry, that is until 1887, when German immigrant John F. Boepple came to the area in search of a suitable material for high quality buttons. After discovering that mussel shells from deep in the Mississippi made the perfect blank button forms, Muscatine quickly became the highest producer of buttons in the entire world, providing at its peak nearly 40% of the total buttons worldwide. Places to Visit Near Me: Okoboji

Orange City

How new Memphis Tiger Tyrese Hunter found his passion for basketball − and how it saved him

Tyrese Hunter 's love for basketball goes back as far as he can remember.

And it has loved him back.

It has opened doors, shepherding Hunter from his hometown (Racine, Wis.) to stardom at Iowa State, success at Texas and now, a fresh start with the Memphis Tigers . It has been a pathway. It has been a platform. It has been a provider.

More than anything else, though, basketball has been Hunter’s peacemaker. His protector. A savior that offered a promising, mild-mannered youngster safe haven during his darkest hours. At 6 years old – barely old enough to dribble – Hunter's father (Brian Hunter Sr.) died suddenly of cardiac arrest. He was 43. When Hunter was 13, his mother (Idamae Wells-Jones) died of kidney failure. She was 45.

Basketball has been the constant for the 20-year-old (who turns 21 in August) point guard.

“Going through those hard times, that’s what helped me push through it,” Hunter recently told The Commercial Appeal. “That’s where I found my passion for basketball.

“It showed me exactly what I want to be in life.”

Tyrese Hunter, the fighter

Hunter is the third-youngest of 12 siblings and half-siblings. His oldest brother, Brian Jr., became his legal guardian in 2016, following his mother’s death.

Even though he was 17 years Hunter’s senior with a wife and two young daughters, Brian Jr. was always heavily involved. Whether he was coaching the youth football team that featured his younger brother on offense and defense or having him over for dinner, the relationship was strong. It made the move a natural fit.

“We were always close,” said Brian Jr., a former Division III basketball player at Wisconsin-Whitewater. “Sports was kind of what bonded us.”

That was also around the time Hunter was introduced to Nick Bennett. Hired as the head basketball coach at St. Catherine’s only four months earlier, Bennett (whose cousin, Tony, is the head coach at Virginia) was on middle school cafeteria duty when he learned of the talented eighth-grader’s mother’s death the night before.

Bennett pulled Hunter aside and asked him if he needed anything. Lunch money. A place to stay. Anything.

“He said, ‘I just don’t want people to feel sorry for me,’ “ said Bennett, who also spent 11 years coaching at the collegiate level and is now at The Latin School of Chicago. “Tyrese is the best player I’ve ever coached talent-wise. But, even if he had been the worst, the impression he left on me at that moment – it let me know, this kid’s got a little something different about him.”

Predictably, Hunter dominated the Wisconsin prep scene. The quick-twitch 6-footer with easy burst and a knack for acrobatic finishes around the rim led St. Catherine’s to a state championship as a junior. He averaged 18.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game as a senior.

The Angels were 53-1 those two seasons. The only loss was an overtime game Hunter didn’t finish due to injury.

His success made him a 4-star, top-50 recruit and took him to Iowa State, where he was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year after putting up 11.0 points, 4.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds a game. Hunter carried the Cyclones to the Sweet 16. The season before he arrived, they won two whole games.

In two seasons at Texas, the Longhorns won 50 games. They reached the Elite Eight in 2023 and the round of 32 earlier this year.

Hunter has started every game of his collegiate career and all but the first game of his high school career. Which still haunts Bennett.

“I always tell people I’m the only coach dumb enough to not start him,” he said. “He had 18 or 19 off the bench. The next game, we went on the road and the kid he was playing behind forgot his jersey. The rest is history.”

Hunter has been especially good in March. His teams are 6-3 in NCAA Tournament games and he has averaged 11.7 points (on 44.5% shooting from the field – 36.5% from three), 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals in the Big Dance.

“I don’t think that gets talked about enough,” said Brian. “He’ll do whatever it takes to win.”

When Hunter began looking for a new destination for his senior season, the search didn’t last long. Even though he was courted by Kentucky, Louisville, Wake Forest, Wisconsin, Virginia, NC State and others, he said Memphis was among the first to reach out and one of the most persistent.

The prospect of working within a system built around tenacious defense and high-octane offense appealed to Hunter, eager to showcase the full breadth of his potential.

“I feel like Memphis fans will see the real side of Tyrese,” said Kamari McGee, a senior guard at Wisconsin who grew up with Hunter and played alongside him at St. Catherine’s. “With Tyrese in a program like that, you’ll see him flourish and take his game to the next level.”  

Hunter − who will make the move to Memphis in late May or early June with his 5-month-old toy Poodle, Hailo, and his 16-month-old French Bulldog, Neiko − also has high aspirations.

“I think I can really be myself (at Memphis),” he said. “I’ve got basic goals – win and get to the next level. But I want to win Defensive Player of the Year, because I have so much pride in that. And I want to compete for the Bob Cousy Award (which goes to the nation’s top point guard). I feel like I can have the opportunity to do that.”

Salem, Massachusetts

You may remember Salem from history class, but this little town about an hour north of Boston isn’t just about witches, although they do feature them prominently.

Duck sits on the outer banks of the North Carolina coast and only has a population of just over 700, so it retains a small-town feel, including a mile-long boardwalk with waterfront shops to explore, and golf carts for rent to help you get around town.

Gorgeous beaches and fun shops and restaurants make this a great place to relax for a few days, or even your whole vacation. Duck also makes a wonderful home base for visiting the rest of the outer bank islands, including Roanoke Island, or the town of Kitty Hawk — of Orville and Wright airplane fame — just slightly south.

Livingston, Montana

Livingston is a delightful town and an excellent spot to experience real, western life from the turn of the 20th century. It sits just north of Yellowstone National Park, right on the Yellowstone River.

It makes an interesting place to spend some time for a meal and a look around after exploring the great outdoors. Besides being right next door to the world’s first national park, Livingston has a historical component that includes the restored Livingston Depot.

Hanover, New Hampshire

Hanover is home to Dartmouth College, and the campus is full of interesting little spots to explore, especially during the fall when the trees change color. 

During the spring and summer, you can investigate part of the Appalachian Trail, and if you happen to be there during winter, there are plenty of skiing options.

Hilo, Hawaii

Ok, Hilo probably won’t make it on your best road trip list, but if you’re headed to Hawaii, make sure to spend some time in Hilo when you arrive.

Okoboji, Iowa

Iowa might not be your first thought for epic vacations, but Okoboji is a hidden gem tucked into the Midwest. Ninety minutes from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and just south of the Minnesota state line, Okoboji is a small town of just over 750 people. 

It sits on the southwest edge of West Lake Okoboji, which makes up part of the Iowa Great Lakes region, along with eight other lakes.

You can relax on the sandy beaches, boat, or waterski during the summer, and ice fishing is popular once the lake freezes over in the winter. If you're looking for something a little more interactive, check out Arnolds Park, an amusement park that also features live music and concerts during the summer.

Alliance, Nebraska

While it might not initially spring to mind as an incredible vacation destination, you have to love a state whose slogan is, “Nebraska: Honestly, it’s not for everyone.” And while there is a lot of farmland and cattle — lots of cattle — there is also a lot to do.

For example, the small town of Alliance is just an hour and fifteen minutes outside of Scottsbluff, or four hours from Denver, Colorado, and boasts one of the coolest roadside attractions you’ll find: Carhenge.

A replica of England’s Stonehenge, but made entirely out of vintage cars spray-painted in various colors, Carhenge makes a great day trip if you’re in the area and is one of those spots that’s hard to describe, so you just have to experience it first hand.

Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

Bay St. Louis sits right on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and, in 2020, was named one of the best places to live by Mississippi Magazine.

You can spend time at one of the many art galleries or antique shops in town, or hang out on the beach and enjoy what the Gulf of Mexico has to offer — just watch out for jellyfish that wash ashore during certain times. There are opportunities for fishing or boating, as well as opportunities for fresh seafood at gulf-front restaurants.

Nearby Gulfport, Mississippi has great golf courses with views of the Gulf as you play, and the vibrancy and zest of New Orleans is only about an hour away, which makes it a perfect day trip from your Bay St. Louis home base.

Bowling Green, Kentucky

Motorheads have got to check out the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, and can even pay to ride around the museum grounds in one of the classic cars. 

Visit the Motorsports Park next door for some fun go-karting or, for the car lover in your life, purchase a whole Corvette Experience that lets you drive a Corvette around their race track. That’s a pricey option but well worth it to cross it off of the bucket list.

Outdoor lovers will enjoy exploring the beautiful scenery, including the Lost River Cave. This non-profit open space contains a seven-mile-long cave and more than 72 acres to explore by foot or get an aerial view from the zip line course. Take a guided boat tour through the cave and learn more about the history and natural wonders of the area.

You can still find ways to be a budget traveler. Look into ways to cut car costs so that a road trip is not wallet-draining or earn miles and travel more with a top travel credit card . The real hard part will be deciding where on this list you want to go.

Don’t sell these nine cities short — they have a lot going for them and can add a lot of character to your next vacation.

There’s something for just about everyone out there, so whether you just pass through on a day trip, or stay for a whole week, make sure that you include time to get off the beaten path and enjoy the more underrated side of travel.
