Disciple are a hard rock band hailing from Knoxville, Tennessee, United States who formed in 1992. They are known for being one of the most respected Christian Rock bands around, and have released eleven albums since their debut in 1995.

Giving Christian Metal a good name since 1992, Disciple formed in the December of that year by four high school friends. They were Kevin Young, who sang lead vocals, Brad Noah, who took up the lead guitar, Tim Barrett on the drums and Adrian DiTomassi on the bass. After spending the winter writing and rehearsing, the nascent quartet started playing live in May 1993. Almost immediately they made an impact, catching the attention of local producer Jesse Jones, who bundled the band into Nightsong Studios to make their first demo tape mere months after their very first concert. Unfortunately, trouble was also following them just as closely and DiTomassi left the band after they’d finished recording their demo.

However, there was still too much momentum in the bands favour to make them stop and find a permanent replacement, so Young took up the Bass and the band slimmed down to a power trio. The bands devoted local following meant that soon afterwards, the band returned to Nightsong Studios with Jesse Jones to record their first full-length album. “Trail Of Tears” was recorded and released by the end of 1993 as a cassette tape available at their gigs on their merchandise stall. Their second effort, “Lake Of Fire”, was made and released in the same way with the same producer at the same studio and came out the following year. However, it was their third album that truly changed things for the band.

Even from the outset the band were on a different track, setting up their own label, Slain Records, to release it on CD as well as cassette and making it with a completely different producer as well. The band consider the subsequent album, “What Was I Thinking”, as their true debut album to this day, with their previous attempts being trial runs, and the band was absolutely right to consider it their true beginning. It made them heroes of their native Tennessee and by 1996, while playing at a local Battle Of The Bands tournament, they were spotted by Jeff Lysyczyn, an A&R man for Warner Bros. Records.

Lysyczyn was so impressed with their debut record that be began talks with the band about a record deal almost immediately after the show. By October 1997 the band were signed to the Warner Bros. imprint Warner Resound for an E.P release and were almost immediately a success, having a number one single on the Rock Radio charts with their track “Fill My Shoes”. Their Warner release, the five track “My Daddy Can Whip Your Daddy” got them a record deal with the Nashville based label Rugged Records and “This Might Sting A Little”, their first majorly released album and their second in total, was released in the summer of 1999 to massive acclaim and a further two hit singles on the Christian rock charts.

Ever since then, the band have managed to become one of the most dependable acts on the Christian Rock scene without even risking stagnation. It’s pretty much fact now that most rock bands experiment and develop by releasing one album with a couple of programmed drum patterns before jacking it all in to “go back to their roots”. Disciple, on the other hand, developed by adding two extra band members, and infused their raucous alternative metal with some delicious Southern Rock influences. They keep things exciting yet consistent, and that’s the mark of a truly great rock band. There are few like them around, and they still come highly recommended.

Live reviews

As a person who is not religious, it’s a little difficult to find the appeal of a Christian Rock group; however, Disciple has managed to find the blend between keeping to their faith, as well as appealing to a larger mass outside of those who are typical Christian rockers. Despite having had a few changes in members since first establishing themselves in the early 90s, the current lineup of artists are Kevin Young, Andrew Stanton, Josiah Prince, Jason Wilkes and Joey West. Their shows are pretty epic, seeing as how they utilize a lot of cool lighting as well as a strong stage presence. Not to mention, the HUGE crowd/fan base that they draw to pretty much all of their shows. They build up the anticipation very well, keeping the stage dark until the crowd demands their presence. Once they start playing, everyone, and I mean everyone in the building is rocking out. It gets to a point where the Christian part of the Christian rock band is over shadowed by the great music that the band produces on stage. But, because they draw on such faith, there is an added amount of enthusiasm and love for what they are doing.

Disciple releases brutal new single ‘The Executioner,’ announces full-length album Skeleton Psalms

The mainstay christian rockers release their first new song in over 3 years the day they embark on winter jam tour.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Disciple has released their first new music in over three years with “The Executioner.” The brutally heavy track is now streaming everywhere at https://ffm.bio/disciple . “The Executioner” is the first single from Skeleton Psalms, the band’s upcoming full-length album, due out from Tooth & Nail Records on April 28.

The mainstay rockers also released a music video for “The Executioner,” directed by Joel Burris. With visuals as bleak as the song’s crushing riffs and stark lyrics, the music video provides insight into the song’s themes. You can watch the video on YouTube .

“The song is about coming to grips with your flaws, your failures, your shame, your sin,” frontman Kevin Young explains. It’s realizing that no, I don’t want to celebrate anything about what I’ve done in this life. I want to lay my life down in exchange for a better one that God has for me.”

In that context, the executioner is an emissary of a merciful death: the death to self that leads to resurrection.

Young says, “We wanted to do a video that had an executioner in it, a video about really coming to grips with letting go of your life. I think that’s the part of Christianity that’s so beautiful. You get to this place where you’re ready to let go of all that you’ve had, ready to surrender and give yourself to God. We’re always ready to receive from Him. But the moment when we’re ready to surrender everything to Him, that’s the death to ourselves. The idea of laying down my life becomes this beautiful idea, as opposed to a dark and sinister idea. I sing ‘my beautiful executioner.’ This is what I want.”

That concept is illustrated by a death row storyline that leads to a dark end — and a new beginning.

“The Executioner” delivers the signature musical ferocity and spiritual weight that listeners have come to expect from Kevin Young (vocals), Josiah Prince (guitar), Joey West (drums) and Andrew Stanton (guitar). It’s a trademark that carries throughout the songs that comprise Skeleton Psalms , which will be Disciple’s 13th full-length studio album. Thematically, “The Executioner” is the perfect introduction to this new era.

“The three themes you can expect from the album are human depravity, the love, mercy and unconditional love of God and also, ultimately, victory,” Kevin Young reveals.

Fans were introduced to “The Executioner” the same day that Disciple embarked on Winter Jam, the annual 40 city Christian music megatour that will span coast to coast between now and the end of March. A full list of tour dates is available at disciplerocks.com/tour . The band is also offering exclusive Tour Bus Experience packages for Winter Jam’s duration, which can be purchased at tourbusexperience.eventbrite.com .

You can find “The Executioner” on all platforms at https://ffm.bio/disciple , where Skeleton Psalms will also be available to presave.

Meet Disciple, the Christian Rock Band Who Values Faith Over Fame

disciples music tour

“To all the knocked down / all the burned-out / You wanna be free? Come on and fly with me,” screams Kevin Young, lead singer of Disciple, at the Move the Hills 2019 concert in Logan, Ohio. It’s an outdoor concert I’ve been coming back to for three years specifically to see this band, with each year being better than the last.

Standing in the middle of the mosh pit with a ton of other people I don’t know, screaming our hearts out together, jumping around and feeling the rhythm pounding in our ears and hearts is an intense, beautiful and cathartic experience. Not to mention it flies in the face of the stereotype that Christians can’t rock hard .

Disciple has been around for a lot longer than most Christian heavy rock bands, having begun their career in 1992 and still continuing today. While they had some minor success on Christian charts with their first few albums, it was their self-titled record that began to launch the band higher, nabbing three No. 1 songs on the Christian charts, two Dove award nominations, along with having one song, “The Wait is Over,” become the No. 1 Christian rock song in 2005. Their next album, “Scars Remain,” won rock album of the year at the Dove awards.

The songs Disciple creates are heavy and hard-hitting, covering a range of topics and themes. One of their most popular songs, “Dear X,” is a triumphant statement about breaking the chains of negative forces in life. “Outlaws,” in true rock form, is a powerful song about being an outcast. They also often tackle issues of mental illness and suffering in songs like “Invisible,” “Someday” and “Beautiful Scars.” No matter what song, I always find myself rocking along with them, singing every word — often with tears in my eyes.

For a band with so much musical and lyrical talent, it’s surprising how little true success they’ve had outside the Christian music scene . Their songs rock hard with intense and powerful production behind them. Their performances are electric, true to rock ‘n’ roll style.

Young spends most of the concerts jumping on the stage with so much energy it’s like he drank nine Red Bulls before coming out. All the other members play their hearts out, making for an engaging and always entertaining experience. Even my sister who isn’t into rock music was waving her arms in the mosh pit and yelling along with the crowd. There’s just something about them that speaks to so many different people.

However, the band itself seems less concerned with success than with creating music that speaks a message. Perhaps they could have more fans if they weren’t so upfront about their faith, but that doesn’t seem to concern them. Every year, midway through their performance, Young stops singing to essentially preach to the crowd. He shares some of his own life experience, how God has worked in his life, then brings his audience to a crossroad.

He leads a prayer of coming home, telling everyone to let go of everything holding them back and to give it to God. It’s an emotional moment for anyone who shares this faith listening to a whole group of people in a poor and struggling community pray together. I never fail to cry every year being a part of it. Most importantly, it speaks to the message the band lives out in their music: They aren’t here to be the greatest band of all time, but to share the faith that’s changed their lives.

This year the story Young shared was a bit different than previous years. He talked about how the band went through a period of time broken up due to infighting not long after they started. During this time he was angry with God and his life spiraled out of control. Eventually, after realizing he had been left with nothing, he returned to his faith a changed man. When the band reunited they had an opportunity to sign with Columbia Records but it would most likely be at the cost of singing about their faith. Their managers even told Young not to talk about God during their performance as it might jeopardize their chance with the company.

But for Young, the choice was easy. He had already lost everything before, he could easily lose it again, but what he could not lose was his faith. Disciple never signed with Columbia, instead continuing to embrace their identity as a Christian band.

Even back when they won for rock album of the year, this was their mentality. When interviewed by ChristianToday, Young said: “We are Christians and that can’t stop. One of the things we have always said is it’s important to be who we are. If doors open up for us to play in mainstream venues, that’s great, but it couldn’t possibly change who we are. We are children of God-that doesn’t stop.” This is something the band still carries today while performing at a small free outdoor concert for a tiny town in Hocking Hills Ohio.

Move the Hills Festival is, at its core, a tool for outreach. It’s the work of a small men’s group called Out of the Boat Ministries that had a dream to bring an outdoor rock concert to their town. Bands like The Protest, Desyfer Down, Fireflight and, of course, Disciple make this all possible. Over time, the event has become an all-day attraction with these men selflessly spending their morning handing out school supplies to children in need, along with washing their feet and giving them a brand new pair of shoes.

It’s this kind of selflessness that propels bands like Disciple forward because they aren’t playing for anything this world can give them but instead for something much greater than themselves. Even with 10 Dove award nominations and two wins under their belts, they show no sign of wavering anytime soon.

Currently, they are about to release a new album, “Love Letter Kill Shot,” on Sept. 13th. I encourage anyone who loves rock music to give them a listen, not just because they’re great musicians but, because they pour so much of their souls into their songs, listening feels like a spiritual experience.

New Worship Band, Honor & Glory, Formed By Disciple

disciples music tour

MARCH 18, 2022 — Honor & Glory, the guitar-driven worship band formed by members of veteran Christian rock band Disciple, released their debut self-titled album on March 18, 2022. The album is available on all major platforms at https://bec.ffm.to/honor .

“Honor & Glory is a passion project birthed from the Disciple members’ deep passion for worship. With this project, we aimed to create worship music directed straight from our hearts to the heart of God,” singer Kevin Young expresses. “We’re excited to invite listeners into worship alongside us.”

The victorious, rock-driven sound that permeates this collection of songs feels custom-made to create environments for communal outpourings of adoration. Listeners have already heard this through the band’s take on songs like “Battle Belongs” (original by Phil Wickham) and “Jesus We Love You” (original by Jesus Culture). The rest of the tracklist consists of Honor & Glory originals, songs like the soaring “God Of My Story,” celebratory “Come Alive” and the grounding and timely “You Are God (When the World Is On Fire).”

The project’s inception came organically through a conversation on Disciple’s bus, a spontaneous moment when the band members realized they were each using their time off the road to lead worship in local churches. It led to the musicians collectively asking a hypothetical question: “We’re leading worship anyway. Instead of doing it apart from each other, why don’t we just play worship music together?”

Honor & Glory is comprised of Kevin Young (vocals), Josiah Prince (guitar), Joey West (drums), Andrew Stanton (guitar) and Dane Allen (acoustic guitar). Each of the musicians brings years of experience to the table, from both rock and worship settings.

In order to create songs that could serve as the best possible vessels to carry expression of the greatness of God, the band also brought in a few key collaborators. Cowriters include Bryan Fowler (TobyMac, Mandisa), Micah Kuiper (Newsboys, Jeremy Camp), Joth Hunt (Planetshakers) and Tommy Iceland (Jesus Culture, Chris Tomlin). Band member Josiah Prince, an acclaimed producer in his own right, helmed the album’s recording and production. The creative team was rounded out with mixing by Nick “Rad” Radovanovic (Skillet, Rhett Walker) and mastering by Mike Cervantes (Tenth Avenue North, We Are Messengers).

The result is an album reminiscent of Planetshakers or Jeremy Camp, an energetic musical sound encompassing rock solid songwriting. Honor & Glory is ultimately an invitation, beckoning listeners to join the band in authentic worship.

“This is all about Him,” singer Kevin Young freely confesses. “I’m not going into writing these songs saying ‘how do I make this song great?’ Instead, I’m saying ‘how do I use this song to share how God great is?’”

DIO DISCIPLES To Return To The Road In 2024

In a new interview with Metal Mayhem ROC , Ronnie James Dio s widow and longtime manager Wendy Dio spoke about the status of the officially sanctioned Dio tribute band DIO DISCIPLES . She said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "We're working on coming out for next year. We're working on some stuff. We're not doing the hologram again. We're finding lots of footage of Ronnie in the RAINBOW and ELF and SABBATH and DIO era, and there will be video screens with Ronnie in there and the band playing. And we're working on some special effects. And that'll go out next year."

As for which singers might be involved with DIO DISCIPLES when the band returns to the road, Wendy said: " Ripper [ Tim Owens ] has been working with K.K. [ Downing in KK'S PRIEST ] right now, so he's gone. But Oni Logan [formerly of LYNCH MOB ] will be there, and hopefully Ripper or somebody. We'll get it happening and we'll have a good show. And that's another thing that's keeping Ronnie 's memory alive.

"Those guys love Ronnie so much," Wendy added. "And we wanna keep that music out there. But there's a lot of young new bands playing Ronnie 's music. I'm very happy about that. There's a lot of tribute bands out there. I'm real pleased about that. 'Cause they all do it for the love of Ronnie . And I'm so happy — I'm so happy that the young kids get a chance to listen to the music. I think this is the first time ever that the kids listen to their parents' music."

When DIO DISCIPLES performed at the "Rock For Ronnie" event this past May at Los Encinos Historic Park in Encino, California, former DIO members Scott Warren (keyboards) and Simon Wright (drums) were joined for the performance by singers Terry Ilous (XYZ, GREAT WHITE) and Dyna Shirasaki (THUNDHERSTRUCK),guitarist Ira Black (BULLETBOYS, VIO-LENCE),and bassist Bjorn Englen (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN).

DIO DISCIPLES is made up of former members of DIO , along with a rotating lineup of vocalists, including Owens and Logan .

Billed as a "celebration of the music and legacy of the greatest singer in the world, Ronnie James Dio ," DIO DISCIPLES have been playing Ronnie 's music on tour in a bid to keep their old bandmate's memory alive.

Three years ago, Wright told The Metal Voice that the proposed DIO DISCIPLES debut album had been put "on hold" so that he and his bandmates could focus on the "Dio Returns" tour. At the time, Simon said that "about four or five demos" had been laid down of "different songs" that he and former DIO guitarist Craig Goldy had been working on. As for the material's musical direction, Wright said: "It's difficult to pin it down, because some of [the tracks] are a little different. Still a little bit of [the] DIO [sound], the way Ronnie would write, obviously, 'cause that's rubbed off on Craig , and I hear things too. But at the moment, it's a little bit eclectic. So that was gonna be one thing we were gonna approach. We need to consolidate it and make it into a DIO DISCIPLES sound. So that was a conversation we were having: 'We need to figure out where we're going with this.' At the moment, it's a bit all over the place. But they sound good. They're great ideas."

Several years ago, Goldy revealed DIO DISCIPLES were planning to start work on a project of original material, and they debuted three of the new songs during their May 2016 appearance at the "Ride For Ronnie" motorcycle rally and concert in Encino.

Craig previously told "Talking Metal" that he has been collaborating with fellow former DIO member Jeff Pilson on the material for the debut DIO DISCIPLES album.

Goldy joined DIO during the "Sacred Heart" tour in 1986 after original guitarist Vivian Campbell was fired from the band following a contentious business disagreement with the singer and Ronnie 's management.

Pilson is best known for playing bass with DOKKEN and FOREIGNER , but he also toured with DIO in the 1990s and performed on three of the group's albums — "Strange Highways" (1993), "Angry Machines" (1996) and the group's tenth and final studio release, "Master Of The Moon" (2004).

Owens told Canada's The Metal Voice about DIO DISCIPLES ' forthcoming LP: "We're not making a DIO record. We couldn't do that. The best thing is, we've all done different types of records, but there's always some similarity to the classic metal and classic rock format, because we have this in us. But we still always move forward a little bit. But that's what it's gonna be. JUDAS PRIEST , DIO , AC/DC — all these influences are in us, and they're not gonna leave us. It's just us writing songs. It's not us writing songs to sound like something; it's us going in and writing songs."

In 2018, Wendy said that DIO DISCIPLES ' debut album would be released via BMG .

Are you ready for it?

Taylor Swift’s fans are going wild over a new possible clue — suggesting that the musician is adding “The Tortured Poets Department” songs into her Eras Tour set list.

Swift, 34, has been sharing “TTPD” content on her YouTube Shorts since the release of the 11th studio album on April 19. In one clip, her rehearsals look a bit different compared to what Swifties have already seen in concert.

“HOW IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THE TTPD SIGN SHES LEANING AGAINST?! OR WHAT ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE DANCERS ARE IN TOP HATS!?! ALL OF THIS IS NEW,” one person wrote.

Taylor Swift's latest YouTube Shorts video featuring possible "TTPD" content.

Dancers lined up behind her wearing top hats and holding canes did not appear in the original show.

“Since when do background dancers have a top hat and canes?!” another fan captioned a TikTok of the scene. “Taylor Swift you have some explaining to do!!”

Even more, her YouTube Shorts video is set to “Fortnight,” her first single off the new album featuring Post Malone. The images are also black and white, which matches the look of the music video and the album’s cover art.

Taylor Swift's latest YouTube Shorts video featuring possible "TTPD" content.

The “Midnights” singer will soon kick off the European leg of her Eras Tour on May 9. The three-hour and 15-minute concert has broken records, becoming the first music tour ever to hit $1 billion.

Earlier this month, she was also officially declared a billionaire by Forbes. The publication credited her ever-exploding music career and real estate portfolio for her income boost.

Here's what to know about Taylor Swift's new album 'The Tortured Poets Department':

  • The 14-time Grammy winner released her highly anticipated 11th studio album “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday.
  • Swift sent her fans into a frenzy at 2 a.m. after revealing the record is a double album . Titled “The Anthology,” Swift’s late-night surprise includes 15 bonus tracks, bringing the total song count to a whopping 31.
  • Swift initially unveiled her 16-song album at midnight, including collaborations with Post Malone and Florence Welch on two tracks. There are also four bonus tracks, “The Manuscript,” “The Bolter,” “The Albatross,” and “The Black Dog” that are featured on various vinyl versions of the album. The four tracks, as well as 11 new songs, are included in “The Anthology.”
  • A poem about heartbreak that serves as a prologue for the album was written by Fleetwood Mac alum Stevie Nicks .
  • There are several celeb names peppered throughout the album’s lyrics, the mention of singer Charlie Puth’s name took some Swifties by surprise.
  • While some of Swift’s exes aren’t spared on “TTPD,” the singer, 34, does seemingly reference her current beau Travis Kelce on the new album’s track “The Alchemy” in a loving way.
  • As for her exes, 1975 frontman Matty Healy is reportedly referenced throughout the 31-song-strong record . In fact, Healy — who, before their summer split, was a rebound romance for the pop superstar following her breakup with British actor Joe Alwyn after six years —  appears to be the subject of the vicious takedown  “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.” Other fans, however, may speculate the “sparkling summer” line is about Alwyn. There are also hints that “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” — gotta love that title — might be about 35-year-old Healy.
  • As for Alwyn, Swift dropped hints at the pair’s ill-fated 6-year romance for a good — or for him, not so good — part of the album. Check out the 10 Alwyn-related references we’ve spotted.

Her team also filmed several concerts during the tour for an October 2023 movie theater release, which grossed an additional $261.6 million worldwide. Disney reportedly paid $75 million for the streaming rights to the movie.

Swift, named Time magazine’s 2023 Person of the Year, is at the top of her game. Amid her ongoing success — and headline-making romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — her “TTPD” album has already broken records too, selling 1.4 million copies on its first day.

Guyton’s new single, a gentle ballad about a mother’s fierce love, opens with the heart-touching lines, “I see pictures of my mama, hangin’ on the wall/ She’s never looked so happy, and I’ve never looked so small/ Now I’m holdin’ you and I know what they say is true/ When a baby’s born that’s when a mother’s born too.”

Guyton and husband Grant Savoy welcomed their first child, son Grayson, in Feb. 2021 and the acoustic ballad’s moving lyric video features home movie footage of Guyton in the hospital cradling her then newborn and spending time with the now toddler. “Cuz I felt it before, but it wasn’t like this/ Ain’t a thing I wouldn’t do, ain’t a thing I wouldn’t give/ It’s the kind you fall into and never hit the bottom of/ It’s a scary love,” she sings on the chorus.
