Just a quick review to say how great it was working with Punta Cana Tours. The communication was timely and professional. The game itself was a great authentic experience and our guide was a perfect host acting as a translator (and negotiator!) when we needed. Great trip–don’t hesitate to work with Punta Cana Tours to get off the resort for a bit–WELL worth it.

We booked roundtrip airport transportation, a tour of Santo Domingo and a baseball game through Punta Cana Tours. We were also able to attend a pro baseball game in San Pedro de Macorís, DR, where we had the pleasure of watching the home town team, the Estrellas Orientales (the Stars) beat the Tigres del Licey. We were supposed to go to a game in LaRomana, but when we got to the stadium we learned that the game’s location had been changed to San Francisco, DR. Our guide was able to scramble and get us to another game about an hour’s drive away. We had a great time!

My husband and I loved the Winter Baseball game. The tour was incredible and without their experience it wouldn’t have been the same. Our guide spoke excellent English and Spanish. She taught us all so much about the wonderful country of DR. We learned things that you just wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn without her. The baseball game was excellent. For 3 hours everyone of us was the same. Bonding with the local’s and enjoying an sports event. Thank you so much. Our next trip we plan on using this company again.
Danielle (verified purchase) – January 15, 2019
We went to the DR for a family wedding, and as it was Dominican winter baseball season, decided to catch a game to experience baseball Dominican style. We had a great time watching the Toros del Este beat the Licey Tigers 6-0. It was fun watching the game and interacting with other baseball fans. Felt perfectly safe the whole time. Enjoyed some excellent fried chicken, too. Highly recommend this tour for anyone who is a fan of baseball! It’s a great way to leave the resort behind and have a real Dominican experience through the common language of baseball!
Audrey (verified purchase) – January 6, 2018
I went on the baseball tour with my family and it was outstanding. The game was absolutely fantastic – a really authentic and fun experience. There was a ton of energy at the stadium and it was great to be a part of it. We chose to do this tour because my dad is a huge baseball fan. He was excited to see some major leaguers there and to chat with other like-minded fans on the tour. It was really the highlight of our entire trip to the Dominican Republic.
David (verified purchase) – November 22, 2017
First came to this area 35 years ago as a US Peace Corps Vol. I wanted to arrange a special trip to La Romana to see a baseball game and they handled all the details including negotiating the pricing for the hats at the game for 6 of us This company is locally owned. Special compliments!
Barb (verified purchase) – February 1, 2017
Was desperately searching for a baseball tour before leaving Canada and we found one! Sent an email to Punta Cana Tours and the communication was great! We were picked up ( 2 couples) and another couple was on the tour from US (they were such a fun couple) and off we went to La Romana for a Toro’s and Estelles baseball game. We would definitely use Punta Cana Tours again!

What is the baseball town in the Dominican Republic?
San Pedro de Macoris is widely considered the Dominican Republic's most prominent baseball town. This is the city where baseball began in the country and is also the area where nearly every major league baseball team has a training facility. This small Dominican city has developed scores of professional players like Sammy Sosa, Robinson Cano, Fernando Tatis, George Bell and Jose Offerman to name a few.
Who brought baseball to the Dominican Republic?
Sugar production was a new boon for the Dominican Republic in the late 19th century, especially for the town of San Pedro de Macoris. Immigrants working the sugar plantations came from the eastern Caribbean and brought with them the game of cricket. But, the plantation owners were mainly American and convinced their workers to switch to baseball. Local Dominicans picked up on the game and San Pedro continues to be the center for Dominican baseball to this day.

Do I need Dominican pesos on the baseball tour?
The excursion includes 2 drinks (beer, soda or water) and pizza or fried chicken for each person. If you would like to buy anything additional, it's easiest to use a credit card. Most stadiums may accept dollars but at the best rates. You can also bring Dominican pesos but it's hard to know exactly how much you need.

Baseball Baseball has been played for many years in the Dominican Republic. Through the years they have produced many well known MLB players we all know. Sammy Sosa, Juan Marichal, Manny Ramirez, Vladimir Gurrero, Alex Rodriguez and many more. Local teams of similar ages will be our hosts as we visit their island.
You know that major league baseball has been dominated by many new Latin players lately. With the advent of several new baseball complexes and training facilities, many of these Latin players are from the Dominican Republic. Baseball is big in the DR and there are many teams for us to play. We are being hosted by Asociación de Cronistas Deportivos de la Republica Dominicana, Inc. They do have professional, adult and youth leagues and baseball is numero uno. We’ll be playing teams of similar age and abilities in different locations each game. We’ll be using some of their better facilities as we sweep the other teams for the week on their home ground. One day, we will attend a local professional minor league baseball game of either the Diamondbacks or Dodgers farm teams. Our team will be made up of US players from various leagues and organizations from all over the country.
Schedule and Agenda This trip is scheduled to take place in the Winter of 2008. Most flights seem to be connecting in the southern parts of the US, Houston, Miami, Phoenix, Atlanta etc. It’s a good days travel from just about anywhere and will probably take a full day to get from your home city to the Dominican Republic. You’ll probably be arriving in the afternoon or evening. We’ll start the trip when you arrive at the airport in Santo Domingo where we’ll be met at the airport by one of the travel agents who will help us get to the hotel for check in. This first day will be devoted to gathering us up and decompression. All other scheduled activities will begin the next day.
Our departure flights will probably be in the mornings, this will get you back home the same day. You are, of course, welcome to come earlier or stay later on your own. If you do, you’ll be responsible for your own transportation, food and accommodations during those times. A preliminary detailed agenda is shown below.
All in all, between the baseball and the tours, this will be a very busy schedule that will give you a great experience and a chance to see some of the sights of the Dominican Republic. You’ll have lots of opportunities for evenings out after the games, tours and dinners. There may be some nights where we’ll go out as a group or you are welcome to go out on your own.
Outline of Schedule for 9-days and 8 nights
Dates February 24-March 3, 2008 . You will arrive in the Dominican Republic by Sunday, Feb. 24th, and depart on Monday March 3.
You are, of course, welcome to come earlier or stay later on your own. I may come a few days early or stay an extra day or so or possibly off to another island. Carnaval in the Dominican Republic is Feb. 24-March 2. If you do extend your time, you’ll be responsible for your own transportation, accommodations, food etc. during those times.
Cost We need at least 10 players for this trip to happen, plus any additional non players. Costs is $1,895 not including air fare. These costs are based on staying at 3-4 star hotels in double occupancy. If you want a room to yourself, add $475. Flight costs are about $500 from the west and $400 from the east coasts in the USA. Room upgrads at $156 single, $76 double occupancy.

Sign Up To sign up for this trip you need to fill out the application form and send a $500 deposit and make your airline reservations. The balance of funds will be due by the first week of January 2008. If for some reason, the trip does not happen, all deposits held by me will be returned in full. Any deposits forwarded to the travel agents are subject to their return requirements. Other than threat of war or natural disaster, the only reason it would not happen is if we do not the min. of 10 people on the trip and it looks pretty good for getting that at this point.
This trip is for amateur baseball players. Wives, girl friends, family members or other tourists may also attend. You will need a valid passport and be able to obtain a tourist visa upon entry to the country.
Roster We need a minimum of 10 players and it looks like we have that already. We’ll have a maximum of 14 players. We can take an unlimited number of friends, wives, relatives, girlfriends, kids and others. These are encouraged and may attend as support staff or just tourists.

About Dominican Baseball Camp
At Dominican Baseball Camp we want to create a fun filled trip with memories that will last a lifetime. We guarantee you play against competitive baseball teams and we will share the Latin American culture with you.
Sam’s passion for baseball led him to the Dominican Republic after college. Curious how such a small island in the Caribbean could be home to so many great baseball players he decided to visit. He spent four months on the island practicing and playing baseball with the locals. He dramatically improved his baseball ability, picking up the Dominicans’ excitement, energy and electricity for the game. In 2007 he founded Dominican Baseball Camp to share the passion for baseball and culture with others. We focus solely on baseball tours and put our focus on customizing a trip to meet the needs of the client.
We are a top-notch baseball loving team. We are made up of former pro baseball players, business minded individuals and charismatic folk doing what we enjoy. We operate with a hands-on approach and can manage every aspect of your trip.

Baseball in the Dominican Republic

Find out why baseball is such a big deal here, where (and when!) to catch a game of “pelota”, and where you can find the hall of fame.
Baseball - or pelota , as it’s called here - is the official sport of the Dominican Republic, and it’s fair to say that it’s a pretty big deal. Despite this island nation’s tiny size relative to the United States, Dominicans account for more than ten percent of Major League players in American Major League Baseball!
In 2019, there were 882 players in the American Major League, of whom 251 were born overseas and a whopping 102 were Dominican. You might have heard of famous Dominican baseball players like Sammy Sosa, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez and Robinson Cano.
Parents teach young children how to play, always encouraging the next generation of world-class talent to rise up the ranks of the Dominican league. Being a baseball player is a great honor here in the DR, and many young people can be seen practicing in their spare time, dreaming of making it big.

The basics of major league baseball in the DR
Here in the DR, the major league sees six provincial teams face off each year from October through to the end of December.
The six major teams are:
- Estrellas Orientales (The Stars)
- Tigres del Licey (The Tigers)
- Leones del Escogido (The Lions)
- Águilas Cibaeñas (Cibao Eagles)
- Gigantes del Cibao (Cibao Giants)
- Toros del Este (Eastern Bulls)
The Tigers have the most championships overall, but on January 22, 2022 the Giants beat the Stars 8-3, much to the joy of their fans who’d endured a long drought between championship wins.
Each of these teams has their own stadium in their home province, and watching a game at one of these is a wonderful way to get involved in Dominican culture.
After the local season ends in late December, the winning team represents the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series, competing with teams from Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Cuba .
If you’re in the DR at the start of the year, you might be able to catch an international match while you’re here. The 2023 Caribbean Series will be initiated in Caracas, Venezuela.
How to get involved
Going along to a Dominican “juego de pelota” is just as much about the atmosphere as it is about the game. Don’t worry if you don’t know much about baseball - local fans will be happy to explain the basics.

In Santo Domingo, the Estadio Quisqueya stadium is home to the Tigres del Licey (blues) and the Leones del Escogido (reds). The stadium is easy to access from most Santo Domingo hotels, located on Avenue Tiradentes in the central city.
La Romana is the home of the Los Toros del Este baseball team. If you’re visiting during baseball season, which runs from October to January, you can join local crowds cheering on their home team at Francisco Micheli Stadium.
Santiago de los Caballeros
In Santiago de los Caballeros you’ll find Estadio Cibao stadium, home of the Cibao Aguilas baseball team (Go Aguilas!). Professional baseball games are held between October and January. Tickets start at DP $ 350 (about US $ 6).
San Pedro de Macorís
In San Pedro de Macorís, a city on the southeast coast, Estadio Tetelo Vargas stadium hosts the home games of Estrellas Orientales. San Pedro de Macorís is where pelota was first introduced to the Dominican Republic, by Cuban immigrants at the end of the 19th century.
San Francisco de Macorís
In San Francisco de Macorís, a small inland city southeast of Santiago de los Caballeros, not to be confused with San Pedro de Macorís, the Estadio Julian Javier stadium is the home of Gigantes del Cibao.
Visit the hall of fame near Santo Domingo
Want to see a Dominican baseball hall of fame? A 45-minute drive down the highway that runs out of Santo Domingo through Boca Chica , you can stop at the BHD Bank, where the lobby has been transformed into a baseball museum, full of memorabilia donated by players and fans.

Ballpark Bucket List: The Best of Latin America
There’s no doubt that baseball is a global game. Whether it’s the foreign talent that shines in Major League Baseball (MLB) or the passionate fan bases across the Pacific in Japan, baseball is a game that transcends borders and language. No matter where you are in the world, heading to the local ballpark to enjoy a game is almost always an international experience.
For a true baseball fan, however, sometimes just seeing any game isn’t enough. They want to attend games across the world, find the best leagues and talent to enjoy, and proudly tell their friends how they’ve seen every version of their beloved game that the world has to offer. After all, no better way to broaden your horizons than through baseball.
This list, part of a series detailing the best baseball havens in the world, aims to help the baseball fanatic by offering the best places to catch the game in Latin America: the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and even Cuba.
Dominican Republic
Estadio tetelo vargas.
Imagine if you will, a paradise where shortstops grow like sugarcane and baseball passion runs like water. It exists. You just need to know where to look.
From Santo Domingo, head east, down a beautiful freeway with the Caribbean sea on your right and endless fields of sugar cane on your left; try not to get too mesmerized by the sights though, as the precarious motorcyclists and slow-moving trucks require your attention on the road. After 70 miles, you’ll reach your haven: San Pedro de Macoris, la cuna de campocortos , or the “cradle of shortstops.”
With a tall statue of a pitcher and catcher greeting you at the city’s entrance, baseball runs through the blood of all baseball fans here. The local team, Las Estrellas Orientales of the Dominican winter league (Liga Dominican del Béisbol, or LIDOM), isn’t the best or the most famous, but nothing beats taking in a game with their fans. The town has produced plenty of fantastic MLB talent too: Sammy Sosa, Alfonso Soriano, Robinson Cano, and Fernando Tatis Jr, to name a few.
For the sheer atmosphere of it all, this is a must-see for any baseball fan.
Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal:
Named after the first Dominican player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, this stadium is one of the most important and relevant in Dominican baseball. Located in Santo Domingo, this is the only stadium in the LIDOM to host two teams (Los Tigres del Licey and Los Leones del Escogido), and both have fantastic fanbases to boot.
The ballpark may only seat just over 11,000 people, but it offers an experience large and grandiose enough to impress any baseball fan. The grandstand is covered with a high sloping ceiling, shading the fans from the elements, but requires no pillars to keep it aloft, ensuring good sightlines for all.
In addition to the Dominican Winter League, this stadium is a frequent host of international matchups, hosting an MLB Spring Training game between the Twins and the Tigers in 2020, and nine Caribbean Series since 1972. For a big-time international baseball experience, this ballpark cannot be missed.
Estadio Latinoamericano
Granted, this might be a little difficult to get to, but if you find yourself in Cuba, this is an absolute must-see.
While it’s the second-biggest baseball stadium in the world, the stadium is not known for its impressive architecture, but rather its central role in baseball and history. The stadium serves as a mecca to Cuban baseball, with the decor highlighting Fidel Castro and his role in the upbringing of the sport in the country. Nowadays, it’s been used as a connecting point between the United States and Cuba, with the two countries squaring off here in 2016; Raul Castro and President Barack Obama sat in to watch the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cuban national team 4-1.
In addition to its place at the baseball-history crossroads, the stadium has highlighted some of the greatest talents to ever come from the country, including Jose Abreu, Yoenis Cespedes and Aroldis Chapman, in front of some of the rowdiest fans in the Caribbean. It’s truly a sight to behold and experience for yourself, to take in years of history and sports in one amazing night.
Of course, you have to get there first.
Estadio Monterrey:
The third-biggest stadium in Latin America and current home of the Sultans is one of the best places in the world to see a game. Built in 1990 to host Mexican League games, this 21,000 seat “palace” has seen MLB, the Pan-American games, and was even scheduled to host Michael Jackson, although the King of Pop canceled late due to illness.
Founded in 1925, the Mexican League is a Triple-A minor league with the unique distinction of being independent from MLB. The Sultanes de Monterrey (Monterrey Sultans) are one of the most successful teams in league history, winning the title ten times and its most recent in 2018. As a result, the Sultanes’ fanbase is one of the most passionate and dedicated in the world, similar to Cardinals or Giants fans in MLB.
Like the team, this stadium has a huge big league ambience, with fantastic sightlines from almost everywhere in the park and beautiful views of the sky in the outfield. It’s no wonder why MLB has hosted over ten games at the stadium, including the 1999 Opening Day and a combined no-hitter from the Los Angeles Dodgers against the San Diego Padres on May 4, 2018. With recent renovations, this ballpark is one of the most up-to-date and well equipped in Latin America, making it a comfortable experience for anyone visiting.
With a fantastic history and an amazing ambience, this stadium is THE place to see a baseball game in Mexico.
Estadio Universitario Caracas
The baseball catedral of Venezuela. This stadium, built in 1951 to host the Bolivarian Sports Games, is one of the most important structures in a baseball-rich country, hosting numerous international games and future major leaguers.
These days, the stadium plays double hosting duty with Los Leones (Lions) del Caracas and Los Tiburones (Sharks) de la Guaria of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, another fantastic winter league in the Caribbean group. What’s more, the stadium has hosted numerous events in the world of baseball, including multiple Caribbean Series, Pan American Games, and a few MLB preseason games.
The ballpark itself is a hub in Venezuela’s capital, with a freeway passing behind home plate and a gorgeous view of the mountains beyond the outfield. Although the stadium only sits 20,000, the perfectly symmetrical view from the outfield bleachers and grandstands make it an intimate, yet major, baseball experience. It’s even hosted dozens of bands, including the Black Eyed Peas, Smash Mouth, and Aerosmith.
Unfortunately, it’s currently advised that Venezuela be avoided by travelers, due to the ongoing political crisis going on in the country. Hopefully someday this park will be safe to visit; Venezuela is a wonderful baseball country that has produced hundreds of MLB players, including recent stars such as Felix Hernandez, Miguel Cabrera, Jose Altuve, and Ronald Acuña, Jr. and retired legends such as Johan Santana, Luis Aparicio, Omar Vizquel, and Dave Concepción.
Puerto Rico:
Hiram bithorn stadium.
If you want to see baseball in Puerto Rico, there’s no better place than this. Built in 1962 and named after the first Puerto Rican MLB player, this ballpark is one of the best tributes to Puerto Rican baseball in the world. Currently home to the Cangrejeros de Santurce (the Crabbers), this stadium is the main béisbol- related attraction in the capital city of San Juan, and is absolutely dripping with passion for baseball, as the Crabbers’ fanbase is one of the rowdiest on the island.
Beyond the Crabbers, the ballpark also played host to the 1994-1995 Senadores de San Juan , AKA “Puerto Rico’s Dream Team.” With players like Roberto Alomar, Carlos Delgado, Bernie Williams and Edgar Martinez out of a job during the ‘94 MLB strike, the All-Stars joined Los Senadores , creating one of the greatest teams to ever play in the region; the team cruised to a winning record and won the ‘95 Caribbean Series easily. The stadium has also hosted a number of different MLB teams, even becoming a temporary home of the Montreal Expos for 22 games in 2003, and hosted numerous games during the 2006, 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classics.
In addition to baseball, the stadium has hosted a number of concerts and historic events, including showings from the Jackson 5 and Billy Joel, as well as numerous boxing and wrestling matches; it even hosted an outdoor NBA game in 1972. For its role in day-to-day San Juan, the stadium was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
If you’re interested in a ballpark dripping with history, this is the place for you!
Estadio Isidoro (El Cholo) García
One of the most intimate ballparks in Puerto Rico, this home of Los Indios (Indians) de Mayaguez is a haven for up close, tight baseball viewing. With only 10,500 seats and none in the outfield, the stadium isn’t known for its features, but rather the experience it brings.
Rebuilt in 2007, the stadium gets its name from pitcher Isiodoro Garcia, who pitched a no-hitter in the final game of a Puerto Rican Professional League Championship; Garcia himself has a huge statue sitting outside. In addition to Garcia, the Indians are one of the most storied team in the PRBL, winning 18 league championships and two Caribbean series; the fans are passionate and love their team, singing several songs on their paths to victory.
The ballpark is also known as one of the best in Puerto Rico, as the intimate fan experience and structure allows for fantastic baseball viewing; the seating creeps into foul territory down the line, which requires fans to pay good attention to foul balls! The beautiful scenery along the way gets points in our book too, with beautiful views of the sea and sunset nearby.
It’s a wonderful, intimate experience for all baseball lovers. Just don’t expect any bleacher bums.
Honorable Mentions: Estadio Pedro Montañez and Estadio Jesús María Freire
These technically aren’t major professional stadiums, but should be noted for one important reason: Doble A . This Puerto Rican minor league is one of the best semipro leagues in the world, and everyone in Puerto Rico takes it incredibly seriously, with several teams across the island.
That being said, two stadiums take center stage.
Estadio Pedro Montañez, located in Cayey, gets our vote for one of the rowdiest fan bases on the island, and rightfully so; their hometown Toritos (Little Bulls) are the defending champions. The ballpark isn’t too big, but the intimate feeling among the crowd, along with the cool distinction of being elevated high above sea level, gives it a solid case for one of the best on the island.
Following that is Estadio Jesús María Freire, located in Cidro and home of the Bravos . This ballpark sits even higher than Cayey, and is home to the best Double A team in the world, as the Bravos have won a league best nine titles. If you can, try to catch a game between these two teams; the passion is unmatched.
