It was formerly a Kingdom on par with Rome and Constantinople, but after being captured by the Ottoman Empire, its co-founded Yugoslavia with other South Slavic peoples after World War I. However, the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s and the ensuing devastation are what most people remember about the region.

It's no secret that throughout the early 1990s, when individual independence and nationalist wars raged, Serbia wielded more power in political decision-making, resulting in a greater involvement in the terrible Yugoslav Wars. It's something that many people could debate and dispute over for hours, and it's still a hot topic today. Kosovo, a contested Serbian province, has yet to be fully recognized as an independent state in Europe.

That should have no bearing on today's Serbia, where the Serbian people, like their neighbors, are reconstructing their country and patching up the cracks. Many potential visitors are unable to separate themselves from the fact that the battle ended only in 1999. (with a peace agreement in Kumanovo, Macedonia). However, it should be emphasized that this also equates to a significant amount of time.

Why Travel to Serbia?

To perceive things from a different perspective. Serbia is bragging about its incredibly gorgeous country, which is flanked by rugged plains and historically preserved towns and cities, under the spotlight of previous headlines.

During the war, none of these items vanished. They were hidden, waiting to be revealed when the moment came for a fresh beginning – in a Serbia that is both safe and open for exploration, despite its political fragmentation.

As a thriving region of the continent that is forging a strong road for tourism, more and more people are flocking here to learn more about it and discover that there is much more to it than its tumultuous past.

Getting to Serbia

Air Serbia flies directly from a number of European, US, and UK cities to Belgrade, Serbia's capital. Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is Serbia's primary airport (BEG).

You can take a 30-minute minibus A1 to Slavija Square (about 2 Euro) or bus 72 to Zeleni Venac Square (approximately 2 Euro) from the airport (less than 1 Euro). A taxi will take half the time but be more expensive, costing around 15 Euro. Use the official 'Taxi Info' service desks to obtain a paper receipt to deliver to the driver.

It is simple to travel around Serbia from Belgrade city and plan a return journey to the capital.

Belgrade is connected to mainland European capitals via long-distance buses and trains, including Budapest, Vienna, Sofia, Bar, and Zagreb.

Visa for Serbia

Although Serbia is not yet a member of the EU, people residing in or having passports or valid visas from Schengen region and EU member states are eligible for visa-free entry for visits of up to 90 days to the Republic of Serbia. Canada and the United States, like a number of other nations, can enter Serbia without a visa.

Getting Around Serbia

Many people travel around Serbia by automobile because car rental is easy to obtain from the airport and within Belgrade, and motorways connect neighboring countries.

Those who do not drive, however, have great public transportation alternatives.

Serbia by bus

There are a number of local bus companies that provide service between cities, smaller towns, and natural sites. Lasta Beograd and Stup Vrac are two well-known bus companies in Serbia that can take you to both well-known and lesser-known sights and attractions.

Belgrade is the well-established starting point for spending days and weeks traveling across Serbia's well-developed transportation and tourism infrastructure. Although you will get lost in Serbia's unspoiled and little-known nature-filled hinterlands, it is not a post-conflict wild west.

Following are examples:

Traveling by bus from Belgrade to Novi Sad takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes and costs 5 Euro / 588 Serbian Dinar.

It takes 1 hour 50 minutes to travel from Novi Sad to Subotica (in the north) and costs 7 Euro / 824 Serbian Dinar.

It takes 3 hours and costs 11 Euro / 1294 Serbian Dinar to travel from Belgrade to Nis (in the south).

Allow at least an hour before departure to arrive at Belgrade's bus station in Savski Venac and purchase tickets — it's a vast location with two terminals, and you'll need some time to navigate and find your bus.

Serbia by Train

The railroad lines are fewer, but they connect Belgrade to Novi Sad and Subotica, as well as Belgrade and Nis. Those with Eurail passes make far better use of the service.

Cargo in Belgrade

Although Uber does not operate in Belgrade, CarGo, Serbia's biggest vehicle ride app, provides the same purpose and operates in the same way.

Serbia Tours

There aren't many specific Serbia tours, so if you want everything planned for you and a guarantee of traveler companionship, you'll have to go elsewhere.

This Western Serbia Tour takes you out to the countryside for a day excursion from Belgrade to see the House on the Drina River, ride the Sargan Eight railway, and visit the famed wooden village. Explore Eastern Serbia on a tour that includes the Manasija Monastery from the 15th century, the 80-million-year-old Resava cave, and the Gornjak Monastery, which is home to Serbia's oldest Serbian fresco paintings.

Best Time to Visit Serbia

The best time to visit Serbia is during the shoulder seasons of March to May and September to October. Outside of the scorching summer months of June to August, temperatures are more moderate at this time of year, which is ideal for covering a lot of ground.

That's not to suggest you shouldn't visit Serbia in the summer. To escape the metropolitan heat, excellent time spent on or along the Danube River is a way of life in Serbia's many gorges or higher elevations in the Carpathian and Balkan Mountain ranges. In July, the well-known EXIT music event takes place.

Is Serbia Safe?

Serbia is a safe country to visit, but it demands the same level of caution and intuition as any other place. Belgrade, in particular, has the same bustling and developed vibe as any other European major. I never felt unsafe in Serbia, and as a female traveler, I had no problems. Most of the time, we were greeted by locals who were ready to show us the other side of their nation.

Novi Pazar, a lesser-known town not used to tourists, was the sole place where an opportunist took his chances (posing as a police officer). While it was unsettling for myself and my male companion, we realized that other people at the coffee shop were involved and demanded that he accompany us to the hotel if he wanted to see our identification. He quickly backed down.

Only the towns and wider area along Serbia's border with Kosovo, where political tensions still exist, are connected with a higher level of caution.

Best Places to Visit in Serbia

The Republic of Serbia is a huge, landlocked region in the center Balkans, making it difficult to narrow down where to travel.

Belgrade -The Reviving Capital

Belgrade, like most visitors to Serbia, was my first stop. My advice is to spend as much time as possible here - at least four days is best. I was pushed headfirst into a cosmopolitan metropolis of creative renaissance that hummed among pastel-colored classicism, not knowing what to anticipate outside the fortress and ancient landmarks. As a main Balkan capital, it was all I hoped it would be. Belgrade is the new Serbia's energetic, tenacious, and determined heart, despite structural damage and underlying economic concerns.

Novi Sad – The Capital of Culture

Novi Sad, like Belgrade, which has been nominated as the European Capital of Culture for 2021, has a protected cultural legacy that makes it a municipal showpiece.

The City Hall, Catholic Cathedral of Mary's Name, and the monument of Svetozar Miletic are all located in the artistically detailed city center, which is highlighted by the "Square of Freedom." Houses and castles painted in bright colors, side alleys lined with museums and art galleries, and little passages (such as Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska) all beckon you to explore before arriving at the bustling café and bar-lined Laza Teleki street, the sundown gathering spot.

The Petrovaradin Fortress, which is separated into Upper and Lower towns, is a highlight. Climb up to the symbolic clock tower with opposing time hands through the arched entrance corridors (large shows hours and small shows minutes). You may look out over the Danube and enjoy a bird's-eye perspective of the Lower Fortress town's grid streets, whose deteriorating Baroque architecture holds stories of the past in its fading façade.

Valjevo and Nature Preserve

Serbia's wonderful outdoors should be incorporated into your vacation, as the country is 75 percent mountainous, with rolling green, protected nature parks, gorges, rivers, and lakes strewn about. But where do you even begin?

In Valjevo, a city 90 minutes southwest of Belgrade, I got off track and wild. The nearby spindle of a nature reserve connected to it, though, was the major reason for visiting. We hiked across the 50-kilometer-long Gradac River Gorge (Klisura Reke Gradac), which winds its way through the Canyon's steep slopes and high rock formations.

Bajina Bašta and Tara National Park

Bajina Bata, a settlement in south-western Serbia on the Bosnian-Herzegovina border, located three hours south of Belgrade. It's also a great place to start your trip to Tara National Park, where you can see the famed postcard-perfect House on the Drina. It was formerly a haven for sailors and swimmers in an area of roaring waves, but it has since become one of the region's most recognizable emblems.

Kadinjača Memorial Complex

On the route connecting Bajina Bata and Uice, 90 minutes east of Tara National Park, sits Kadinjaa Memorial Complex. It's a remarkable tribute to the Uice Workers Battalion, who died battling the Germans here during the Battle of Kadinjaa in November 1941. It serves as both a cemetery and an exhibition venue, with the goal of evoking strong emotions. Massive white stone sculptures stand out against the low-slope hills, while another stone stands alone, showing a big bullet hole.

Ride the Sargan Eight Railway to Mokra Gora

You can begin an excursion that removes the need to travel another bus on the southern outskirts of Tara National Park. Riding the Sargan Eight tiny gorge railway further south to the Mokra Gora is an alternate method to see Serbia's natural scenery.

Drvengrad — Serbia's historic wooden village and timber town perched on a plateau between Tara National Park and the hilly Zlatibor – is widely known in Mokra Gora. Drvengrad, quaint and with a bygone historical reference as a real village, was built as a film set for Emir Kusturica's Serbian drama Life is a Miracle and was never disassembled once the film completed.

Visit Zlatibor and Serbia’s Mountainous Region

Travel 30 minutes south of Mokra Gora via the hilly valleys and open-air spa region of Zlatibor, which is more than just a ski resort. This area has a beautiful circuit of hiking paths in the spring and summer.

Uvac Gorge and Nature Reserve

Continue south from Zlatibor to the Uvac Special Nature Reserve, which has a mountain park and a rich biome. The highlight is a gentle motorboat ride along the Uvac Gorge's spectacular bends.

If you don't want to go on a longer excursion through Serbia, you can arrange a Uvac Nature Reserve tour from Belgrade that includes a hike and a boat ride.

See Žiča Monastery – The History of Serbian Kings

One of Serbia's most historically significant Orthodox monasteries is located east of Zlatibor, about three hours south of Belgrade. The earthy red 13th-century IA Monastery was built on the command of Serbia's first King, Stefan the First-Crowned, and served as the coronation church for all Serbian Kings. In 1979, it was designated as a Cultural Monument of Exceptional Importance.

Novi Pazar – See the Religious Diversity of Serbia

Continue south from the Uvac Nature Reserve and you'll arrive in Novi Pazar, a valley town located between the Golija and Rogozna mountains. Smaller communities with distinct personalities, off the beaten path from the main cities and surrounded by nature, contribute to a larger image of Serbia's religious, cultural, and artistic variety.

When Yugoslavia was created, it was made up of Christian and Muslim South Slavic nations, albeit the latter is currently in the minority. Novi Pazar is a largely Muslim town that demonstrates a different side of Serbia in terms of architecture, art, and culture.

Visit Topola – Serbia’s Wine Region

Bountiful vistas with the foundations of good terroir are only one hour south of Belgrade in Serbia's winemaking area of Topola. And not many people are aware of it. The Aleksandrovich Winery and its outstanding Triumph series are among the region's award-winning vines that make regionally distinctive sweet wine. The hilltop five-domed St. George's Church in Oplenac, next to the vineyards, is a tomb of one of Serbia's dynastic dynasties. It has a marble floor and stunning mosaic images and icons on the walls.

Guča – Trumpet Festival Centre

The town of Gua, located two hours south of Belgrade and north of Uvac, is famous for its yearly trumpet festival, which is incentive enough to visit.

Even if you aren't a trumpet enthusiast, the sheer number of performers lighting up the town with a variety of low hums and beats will leave an indelible impression on you. Gua is home to a one-of-a-kind cultural festival that draws people together naturally.

What is Serbian Food Like?

Food is an important aspect of Serbian social life. If a local invites you to a feast, accept it totally and enjoy it. Sarma: packed grape leaves filled with minced meat, Cevapi: grilled meat shaped like miniature sausages, and Kajmak: a curd-based spread eaten with warm bread are all examples of meat-heavy Serbian cuisine. All are typically served with side salads, fruit relishes, and spicy chutneys, and are topped off with cool Rakija, the powerful national drink that tastes similar to Schnapps.

Can I Enter Kosovo from Serbia?

First and foremost, the issue of Kosovo in Serbia is divisive and contentious; address it at your own risk. Serbia does not recognize Kosovo as a country or an independent state.

It is now legal to enter Kosovo from Serbia because Serbia does not recognize the boundary and claims Kosovo as part of its territory. You are free to travel there and back into Serbia. You will not be able to enter Serbia if you enter Kosovo from the land borders of Montenegro, Albania, or North Macedonia. Why? You lack the stamp required for official admission into Serbia via Belgrade airport or land crossings from Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia.

In Serbia, there are numerous airports that serve both international and domestic flights. Various international carriers, including Lufthansa, Swiss Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Etihad Airways, Emirates, Qantas, and others, fly to Switzerland on a regular basis from major UAE cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Akbar Travels works directly with hundreds of full-service and low-cost airlines to provide you the finest range of low-cost flights and to make it simple to compare bookings on all airlines travelling to Serbia. Serbia is a relatively safe country. On the list of the safest and most dangerous countries, it is ranked 31st out of 162. Serbians are kind and willing to help, and tourists, in particular, should not have any major issues.

Casual and smart casual will suffice in the vast majority of scenarios that a normal traveler may encounter. One of the best aspects of any journey, in our opinion, is exploring and learning about different cultures and conventions.

The Serbian dinar is the official currency of Serbia. One dinar is subdivided into 100 para.

DAY 02: Full-day Belgrade City Tour

Following breakfast at the hotel, you have the entire day to explore Belgrade. Discover all that Belgrade has to offer in the city centre and its surroundings. Combining a walking tour with a scenic automobile trip will give you an idea of the entire city and the wider picture of life in Belgrade With live, expert guidance, you can explore Zemun, the Museum of Yugoslav History, the House of Flowers (where Josip Broz Tito is buried), Avala mountain, and Avala Tower, as well as New Belgrade, Saint Sava Cathedral, the Old and New Royal Palaces, the Serbian Parliament, a monument to Nikola Tesla, Republic Square, Kalemegdan Fortress, and many other attractions.

The tour starts from your hotel and drives to New Belgrade, which is located across the Sava River. It has several spectacular buildings which were built as a new section of the city during World War II and during the communist era such as The Sava Center, one of the largest conference halls in this region of Europe, the Federal Executive Council, commonly known as the Palace of Federation, the Genex Tower, or the Western Gate of Belgrade, etc.

We continue to Zemun, a part of Belgrade renowned for its northern location, picturesque neighbourhoods, cobblestone lanes, and seafood restaurants along the Danube River. Avijatiarski Trg, which marks the start of Zemun’s historic district. This square, with the massive monument to WWII heroes, is surrounded by Zemun’s oldest elementary school building and the Air Force Ministry, one of the most significant examples of modernism in pre-war Yugoslav architecture.

Then we head to Gospodska Street, the major street, where we can see some stunning examples of Zemun architecture, such as the Post Office, Hotel Central, Town Museum, House with a Sundial, etc. After parking at Stara Kapetanija on the Danube’s banks, we begin our walking tour of the historic centre of Zemun. As we go down the Zemun Promenade, which runs alongside the Danube River, we will see several quaint seafood restaurants that are shaded by plane trees over a century old. We ascend Gardos Hill, the centre of Old Zemun, passing by the oldest Orthodox church of St. Nicholas from the 17th century. This will give you the impression that Zemun is a mix of Mediterranean and Middle European cultures thanks to its curved cobblestone lanes and tiny houses.

When we reach the top of the hill, we can see the ruins of the Zemun citadel still standing there, with the Millennium Tower serving as Zemun’s prominent landmark in the centre. The romantic structure, created at the end of the 19th century in a fusion of historical styles, served to mark the southernmost point of the Austro-Hungarian empire. You will be speechless when you see Zemun Old Town from above, together with the meeting of the two rivers and Belgrade Fortress on the opposite side, from the top of the tower. We then go down Gardos Hill to go to the town’s main square, where there is a weekly market. The area is surrounded by historic structures, including the Bishop’s Office and the 18th-century central city Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Mary. We continue walking until we reach the Magistarski Trg, where the town’s administrative buildings, including the Town Hall and the Magistrate’s Building, have stood since the 19th century. Now, we come to the end of our walking tour and hop in the car to continue exploring.

We cross the Gazela Bridge and drive to Dedinje, the most affluent neighbourhood in Belgrade, where we will visit the Museum of Yugoslav History and the House of Flowers, where Josip Broz Tito, a founding member of Second Yugoslavia, is buried. To familiarise ourselves with the cultural legacy of the former Yugoslavia, we will visit all three locations: the May 25 Museum, the House of Flowers (not required to pay for a ticket on the spot), and the Old Museum, with a focus on the social history of the socialist era.

We will then depart the city and travel to Avala, the green mountain in Belgrade. One of Belgrade’s best-known open areas is less than 20 kilometres south of the city centre. It offers an ideal location for relaxation, picnics, or simply taking in the scenery. It is entirely made of wood and is inhabited by several bird and animal species. Until we reach Avala’s highest point, we go through lush woodlands. The mediaeval castle of Rnov, which was situated here, was destroyed in the 1930s by Aleksandar I, King of Yugoslavia, to build the Monument to the Unknown Hero, which is the largest monument in the country. He hired his court artist, the well-known sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, for the task, and together they built a spectacular building out of black marble with enormous statues that resembled ancient graves. We’ll learn fascinating tales about its construction process and the monument’s inherent meaning. Afterwards, we come down to Avala Tower, located on the second-largest hilltop of Avala (440 metres high). It was the largest concrete construction and the highest structure in the whole Balkans when it was built as a TV tower in the 1960s. The tower was attacked and destroyed during the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. It was rebuilt using the same blueprints and reopened to the public. The two elevators take us 123 metres up, where we get a breathtaking view over Belgrade, including the intersection of the two rivers and the province of Vojvodina behind, as well as the Sumadija region of Central Serbia. We take a little rest before getting back in the car and heading back to Belgrade. We’ll stop here for a typical Serbian lunch at one of the area’s oldest restaurants. On our way back from Avala, we stop at the Vraar neighbourhood for photography, where we can see the Church of St. Sava, also known as St. Sava Temple, one of the biggest Orthodox churches in the entire world.

Through Slavija Square, we will enter Nemanjina Street, which is home to nearly all state government buildings, including the State Court, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the General Staff of the Serbian Army, the Ministry of Railways, and the Government Building, all of which are stunning examples of pre-war Belgrade architecture. Following that, we take a trip through Kralja Milana Street, the city’s main thoroughfare, where important structures like the Old and New Royal Palaces are located. We drive through Nikola Pasic Plaza, where there is a memorial to the first prime minister of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and we stop to take pictures in front of the Parliament Building. Once there, we can hear the story of the two dynasties that governed Serbia in the 19th and 20th centuries as we stroll between the Old and New Royal Palaces.

Later, we arrive at Terazije Plaza, which features a distinctive 19th-century white stone fountain and one of the city’s most attractive landmarks, the Moskva Hotel. We keep riding until we arrive at Republic Square, the centre of the city, where the National Museum, the National Theater, and the Opera buildings are located, along with an equestrian monument honouring Knez Mihajlo, the most significant town and state ruler of the 19th century. We arrive at Studentski Trg, where we leave the car and start the walking part of our trip. We walk through Kalemegdan, the biggest and oldest park in the heart of the city. Beginning at Leopold’s Gate, we will go through the ruins of the Roman castrum, Singidunum, and the mediaeval walls that were constructed on top of it, Zindan Gate, Despot’s Gate, and Jakia tower, all of which date to the 15th century. We will tour the two Orthodox churches: the Ruica Church (Virgin Mary Church ) and the Chapel of Saint. Petka, which is located in this fortress.

When we enter the Upper Town (Gornji grad), we will be rewarded with a spectacular sight of the Sava and Danube rivers uniting. We’ll continue our stroll through the Upper Town, passing attractions like the Victor monument, a famous landmark in Belgrade created by sculptor Ivan Meshtrovic, the Roman well, the King’s gate and Sava promenade, the Damat Ali Pasha Mausoleum, and the Clock Gate (Sahatkapija) Clock Tower ( Sahatkula ). We will leave the fortress behind us and re-enter Kalemegdan Park after passing the Military Museum and via Istanbul’s gate (Stambol gate). In the park, there is a Monument of Gratitude to France by Ivan Mestrovic, as well as several busts of the great Serbian writer. We will reach the Republic Square through the pedestrian street Knez Mihajlova, passing by several remarkable examples of civil architecture from the 19th and 20th centuries, such as the Serbian Academy of Science and Arts.” Then return to the hotel to relax for the night.

Day 03: Northern Serbia: Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovic Tour

Just after breakfast at the hotel, spend the entire day experiencing Northern Serbia and discovering everything there is to know about the region on this tour. Choose between a private or small shared group with a live, professional guide and an a/c car. You will visit one orthodox monastery in the region known as “The Holy Mountain of Serbia,” as well as the picturesque baroque village of Sremski Karlovci, the massive Petrovaradin Fortress, and Serbia’s second-largest city, Novi Sad. With more than 25 different ethnic groups and six official languages, Vojvodina is a “melting pot” where visitors can experience the distinctive atmosphere of these diverse communities. Last but not least, you will get the opportunity to taste some distinctive, locally-made wine.

Your tour will start when we pick you up from your Belgrade hotel and drive directly to the Vojvodina region in northern Serbia. We will spend the next hour taking in the vivid scenery of the Pannonian plain and learning about the violent past of this region. Vojvodina is an ethnically diverse region with more than 25 different ethnic groups and six official languages. Vojvodina is the agricultural hub of Serbia thanks to its fine chernozem soils, which also provide the majority of the nation’s wheat and corn (maise). In Vojvodina, people say, “if you drop a button into  the ground, next spring, you will harvest a full coat.”

Fruka Gora: Afterwards, we travel to Fruka Gora, the only mountain region in this area, which has one of Serbia’s five national parks and is also one of the oldest and best wine districts. It is covered in woods on its upper slopes and is surrounded by vineyards on its lower slopes. The dense Lyndon woodlands provided an ideal hiding place for the 17 mediaeval Orthodox monasteries that had nestled within them.

Kruedol Monastery: Fruka Gora, also known as “The Serbian Holly Mountain,” is the home of 17 operating Orthodox monasteries. During battles and migrations brought on by Turkish domination, monasteries were established. They developed into crucial groups that made sure the Orthodox church and Serbian identity would remain through difficult times. Kruedol, which was established in the early 16th century, is perhaps the most significant. Several original paintings still hang on the dome’s pillars despite having suffered damage multiple times, and frescoes and icons date to the mid-1700s. The church houses the bones of King Milan Obrenovi (who died in 1901) and several other Serbian nobility from the Brankovi dynasty.

Sremski Karlovci: This tranquil, Baroque village will amaze you with its little homes, Baroque churches, mansions, gardens, and fountains. It has a rich history because a peace treaty was signed here in 1699 between Christian European armies and the Ottoman Empire, ending the Ottoman invasion of Europe.  For more than 250 years, the town served as a religious and educational centre for Serbs, making it one of the most important locations in Serbian history.

The Chapel of Peace, where the peace agreement was signed, will be our first stop. After that, we will walk through Karlovci’s streets till we reach the main plaza. The Four Lions Fountain, the Karlovci Gymnasium (High School), the Town Hall, the Roman Catholic Church, the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, the Patriarchy, and the Serbian Orthodox Theological Seminary can all be found in this area. We will try the most well-known local product the Bermet wine at one of the city’s oldest wine cellars.

The Winery: The renowned Bajlo winery will be our next stop. The Bajlo family has made wine for more than 250 years. As the current owners are the fourth generation to run the company, we think they are the best place for us to learn more about the Serbian wine from Bermet that even made it onto the Titanic. Bermet is a uniquely delicious aromatic dessert wine made locally. While containing between 15 and 18% alcohol, its delightfully sweet flavour is simple to underestimate.  It is commonly made as red wine, and in the 15th century, it was in high demand among European royal families. In the late 19th century, it was exported to the United States.

We’ll learn about the history of winemaking in Sremski Karlovci, find the secrets of Bermet production that each family keeps to themselves, and discover why they believe Bermet is “the best wine for men, but when a lady drinks it.” We will be sure not to leave the cellar without trying some of this sweet nectar, which even the formidable Maria Theresa is said to have enjoyed.

The Fortress: Our next stop is the impressive Petrovaradin Fortress, often known as “Gibraltar on the Danube.” One of Europe’s largest protected strongholds covers a 100-hectare area. It was constructed by the Habsburg Empire in the 17th and 18th centuries and was crucial in protecting Middle European nations against Ottoman assaults. We will stroll around the fortress, pass through some of its gates, and see the most intriguing locations on top of it, such as the City Museum, Old Military Barracks, and the Clock Tower. So you can rejoice with the view of Novi Sad and the Danube.

Novi Sad: Novi Sad is the second-largest city in Serbia, with its classic Middle European style and great history of being a cultural and intellectual hub of the Serbs in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, for which it earned the name Serbian Athens. Here, we will visit the most popular attractions, including the Museum of Vojvodina, Dunavski Park, the city’s largest green space, and the stunning Neo-Romantic Serbian Orthodox Bishop’s Palace. We won’t miss the 18th-century Serbian Orthodox Church of St. George with its priceless iconostasis created by renowned Serbian artist Paja Jovanovic. We will continue along the main street, admiring the architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as the endless rows of cafés and diners, until we reach Liberty Square, which is the major part of the city. The Town Hall, Catholic Church, Finance Palace, and Vojvodina, the oldest hotel in the city, are all located in this area. Lastly, we’ll pass through the Serbian National Theater on our way to the city Synagogue, a stunning Hungarian Secession-style edifice and one of Europe’s largest preserved synagogues.

Following that, we will take a break, so you can spend your free time exploring Novi Sad. Consider following your tour guide’s suggestion to have a typical Serbian lunch (at your own expense), go shopping, check out The Museum of Vojvodina, or just stroll through Novi Sad. After your free time return to the car and will be driven back to Belgrade.

Day 04: Western Serbia: Full-Day Private Tour to Zlatibor Mountain

After breakfast at the hotel, take a full-day tour of Zlatibor, one of Serbia’s most stunning and well-known mountains.  The region of Zlatibor is famous for its traditional architecture, traditions, and cultures, rich and varied ethnic history, delectable culinary specialities, and healthy cuisine. Zlatibor has a mild temperature, making it one of Serbia’s most popular tourist attractions and a place notable for its clean air.

One of the latest and most popular tourist attractions is located here, the “Gold Gondola Lift,” the longest panoramic lift in the world. This cutting-edge air route, which is nine kilometres long, connects the town of Zlatibor with the ski resort “Tornik” through Lake Ribniko, where a stopover station is situated.

Visit the 55 buildings that make up the Sirogojno “Old Village” open-air museum to learn about construction techniques, interior design, and how locals managed their businesses and families. Then visit Stopia Cave, which has a 35-meter-wide and 18-meter-high entry hole. It is divided into five sections: the river canal, the canal with baths, the great hall with baths, and the gloomy hall. Go for an adventure on a 550-meter-long zip line that connects two hills, with the highest point being 130 metres above the ground, making it one of the longest zip lines in all of Europe. The ride lasts around one minute. Then return to Belgrade hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 05: Departure

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and catch your flight home.

Best museums in Serbia

Our Serbia holidays take you to the best museums in the country where you’ll discover Serbia’s fascinating history, culture and famous national icons.

Gibanica is Serbia’s mouthwatering take on the Balkan’s favorite pastry dish. It’s similar to a rich layered strudel cake, made with filo pastry and usually stuffed with cottage cheese and eggs. You can also find them filled with spinach, meat or potatoes, and they can be sweet or savory. Whether you eat it as a snack or a festive treat, gibanica is irresistible.

Pljeskavica

This dish may be popular all over the Balkans, but it's the beloved national dish of Serbia. It’s a traditional grilled hamburger and the spiced meat patty is made with a mixture of beef, pork and lamb. Served with onions, tomatoes, avjar (red bell pepper and eggplant relish) or lepinje (pita bread), pljeskavica is the ultimate Serbian comfort food.

Another Balkan favorite, Kajmak is a salty cheese, similar to clotted cream, made from unpasteurized, unhomogenized milk from cows, sheep or goats. In Serbia, you spread it over bread as a tasty appetizer, melt it onto your hamburger patty, or try the fermented version in gibanica pastries. However you eat it, you’re sure to fall in love with kajmak.

Best food in Serbia

Wondering what to eat in Serbia? We’ll show you the best of real Serbian cuisine, from delicious pastries to grilled meats and fresh cheese.

What to pack for Serbia

People packing for a tour

Serbian phrasebook

Serbian is the official language, so bring along a phrasebook and try using a few common words and phrases. It’s all part of an enriching Serbia travel experience.

Comfortable shoes

You’ll find endless laneways, hillsides and towers that just have to be climbed on your Serbia holidays, so bring a reliable pair of walking shoes.

Rain jacket

There’s always a chance of rain in Serbia, especially if you’re heading on a Belgrade tour in spring. Bring a light rain jacket or a travel umbrella and stay cozy and dry.

Insect repellent

Don’t forget your insect repellent when you travel Serbia. Whether you bring a spray or a cream, make sure it’s a good quality repellent to protect yourself from mosquitoes.

Use it to protect yourself from the sun or the cold, or wrap it around your shoulders when entering churches and monasteries - a scarf always comes in handy on a Serbia trip.

Belgrade is a low-budget New York.

Whoever was fortunate enough to wake up in Belgrade this morning can consider that he has achieved quite enough in life for today. Asking for more would be immodest.

Dusko Radovic

Belgrade is becoming the key destination for travelers who seek for something different in a familiar European landscape.

The Sheffield Star’s Profile magazine

…I had found the most beautiful place of antiquity, the overlarge city of Belgrade…

Despot Stefan Lazarevic

its rivers, its sky and its people. Out of these three primeval elements, the unique spirit of Belgrade is born.

Belgrade is a fantastic city, well connected with the world.

Andrzej Wajda

Belgrade is not in Belgrade, because Belgrade, in fact, is not a city-It’s a metaphor, the way of life and the way of seeing things

I came here because I have never been in this region before... In a very short time I have found two things, both important to me: the food is amazing, and the approach to cinema is far more intellectual than in America.

Jack Nicholson

It usually happens that a traveler goes to a famous place expecting a lot, and leaves disappointed and down. This happens with Athens, Rhine, St Peters Church in Rome. But then, I went to Belgrade not expecting anything- the decorations, the sights, not even the joy or anything interesting - and now I am a victim of its seductive charm, and I have to leave it with utmost pain. This is a new feeling: to fall in love with a city

Herbert Vivian

I am particularly impressed by the bright and warm atmosphere of Belgrade

Booked flights are one of the key things about making an itinerary. It is very important whether the flight arrives  in the morning or in the afternoon. This arrival time can change the whole plan.

Your budget is also one of the key elements when making a unique itinerary. So determine your maximum and minimum in advance. It usually happens that you can actually get premium services for a medium budget.

I liked everything accept the delay try to improve in that area

Same problem with very poor food. Gluten free options can taste great, there is not reason to be give suboptimal meals in this situation.

Flights were both delayed. No luggage on arrival for the whole plane and no contact since submitting a PIR.

Flight got canceled without any prior information and it caused lot of trouble

Nice selection of movies and TV shows. Plane was generally nice, not the newest but nice nonetheless. However, Emirates should have cancelled the flight, as hardly any flights flew out of Dubai at the time. Flight delays and cancellation was poorly communicated and passengers were left guessing and to their own devices on what to do. Connection desks were staffed too thinly, there was one desk with more than a hundred clients and just one poor lady. When I had my flights rebooked, I was told meal vouchers can be scanned using my boarding pass, nope. Was told to comeback for my hotel voucher, none. Had to book my hotel voucher the usual way through Dubai Connect despite having been told twice to comeback to the counters twice.

On the Dubai-Gatwick flight the only meal options were Beef or Chicken. No vegetarian option. This was a surprise. I would usually order in advance but did not this time. Would have been good to know that a vegetarian meal is not available as a standard meal. Thankfully it was just me travelling, but if I’d had my kids with me that would have been a big problem for us.

My Experience was ok. But the gentleman next to me vaped the whole flight and the attendants did nothing, whether they were aware, I’m not sure.

Flight from Dubai to Zagreb very bad cabin crew. Bad food

Checkin and boarding staff at Delhi Airport is not cooperative with passengers Their behavior very humiliating . They don’t allow Lap top bag and Ladies’ purse/vanity bag which most of the airlines allow besides cabin baggage and check in baggages. They try to charge extra payment on the pretext of small variations which normally other Airlines staff don’t do. Airline staff should be courteous & cooperative but check in staff of Emirates Airline at Delhi was not so at all.

Absolutely terrible delays for 3 hours changed seats after we paid an upgrade on both legs. It appears it’s up to us to request a refund after they down graded our seat. Never again !!

It was a nightmare. I booked business class ticket from Ediburgh to Beirut via Istanbul to attend a funeral. I had a wonderful experience flying to Istanbul from Edinburgh. Then I could not get a boarding pass issued to Beirut. It seems that although they booked me and I had a reservation number, I had no seat allocated and the flight was full. I was asked to go from one desk to another and made to wait for 2 hours. I missed my flight as I did not have a seat assigned and it was full. The only option was to put me on the next flight, 6 hours later, for a fee of over $400. They said that was the best they can do to 'help me' and to 'take it or leave it'. Well, I was not about to be bullied; I stood my ground. I booked and paid premium for the journey, which was confirmed. The eventually accepted to not charge me extra and i waited a total of over 8 hours in the airport with no compensation. On top of my grief with the risk of missing the funeral service, I had to put up with their indifference and condescending attitude. They spoke about me in Turkish thinking I would not understand (I hold a British passport) in front of me. When they eventually handed my passport and boarding pass back to me, I showed them I was born in Istanbul and that I understood everything and said a condescending 'thank you' back to them in Turkish. You should have seen their faces. I said that consumers have rights and it is a shame that Turkish Airlines does not have good customer service to at least acknowledge and apologize for errors committed by the airline. Blaming the me, the client, for such an error and placing unreasonable ultimatums, rudeness and dismissiveness to be rid of me, particularly when I was vulnerable and visibly grieving was really shocking... The airline taints the city of Istanbul and the people of Türkiye. Such a shame.

Quality of service on board was very inconsistent. FA service primarily seemed robotic and they barely engaged with passengers

The flight departed on time and the staff was professional.

A good airline, but at checking in, they allocated seats for my wife, and I far away from each other, and to change them, they wanted a payment, such a bad policy, it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth All was good on the plane, good food, but the air hostess was abrupt and a bit rough dealing with the passengers, but one has to find excuses for staff working under pressure

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the recent flight experience I had with your airline. This has been one of the worst travel experiences I have ever encountered, and I feel compelled to bring it to your attention. Firstly, I missed my flight due to what I perceive to be a lack of clear communication and coordination on the part of your staff. There was no remorse or apology from the airline's representatives, which further exacerbated the situation. As a result of missing my flight, I was subjected to a 24-hour delay at the airport, where I had to spend a significant amount of money to rent a hotel room and cover other incidental expenses. Additionally, since my baggage was already checked in from Tanzania to Turkey, I had to purchase essential items for the 24-hour period. What truly dismayed me, however, was the discourteous and unprofessional attitude of your staff. Their lack of empathy and understanding only added to the stress and inconvenience of the situation. I have been traveling abroad for over 20 years, and I can confidently say that this experience has been the worst I have ever encountered. As a result, I am compelled to reconsider ever using your airline again for future travel. I strongly urge you to address the issues I have raised and take immediate steps to rectify the situation. Additionally, I expect a formal apology and a refund for the expenses I incurred due to the airline's negligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to your prompt response.

Traveling is Okay, but staying in Istanbul, specially Wi-Fi in airport terrible.

On line check in needs a lot of improvement. I tried and gave up.

Everything was great Turkish airlines should show the same attention to international flights.

Sadly, the plane was extremely old and uncomfortable. The entertainment system broke down completely. We couldn't even charge our phones. The seats were also very uncomfortable, with a very slim seat cushion. It must be the result of having 9 seats where there used to be 8.

The Plane was very small.. domestic route will perfect not international

If I have a choice I would not use this airline. They moved by booking to Smart Wings, an airline they code share with. Changing terminals in buses and dealing with some of the staff associated with it is not the best experience. Having stated that I must share that the crew of Smart Wings airlines was polite.

Consider serving food to all passengers regardless of food reservation status during booking.

This was a smartwings operated flight. Flydubai is no longer value for money. Their prices are as high as emirates whereas delays, services and overall quality is as low as any other low cost carrier.

The only highlight on this flight was the taste of the food, which was surprisingly good. Everything else was below average, and the cabin crew service especially stood out for being slow and inattentive. We were surrounded by toddlers/babies and it made our 4 hour flight feel like 10 hours. Granted, that's not the airline's fault, but it added to the overall subpar experience.

Second-row economy doesn't have leg space if you are 6 feet

מלון חבל על הזמן השאר יום יומיים סבבה אבל בחוץ חום כלבים

Very helpful and welcoming crew, good food in fair quantities, enough space for the legs. Surprisingly good quality for a "lowcoster".

Boarding was almost an hour late but there was no communication. Cabin crew did nothing to ensure people kept masks on and even with seat belt sign on people were wondering around the plane.

Take too much time to get cpnnection flight. Did not get enough time toget refresh even for going rest room it is not enough time. For wheelchaor person like me face too much trouble. Idont wish to go next time in emirat and fly dubai. Not sugest any senior citizon to fly with this.
