Staying at an Eco Hotel in Colombia

The top 15 eco hotels in colombia , faq about eco hotels in colombia, final thoughts on the best eco hotels in colombia.

Staying at an Eco Hotel in Colombia

Colombia is very backpacker-friendly , with numerous great budget accommodation options, and eco hotels are no different. Although accommodation can sometimes be simplistic, all the basics of what you need are covered at a very reasonable price.

Most of the best eco hotels in Colombia have a secluded feel, and are situated away from city traffic and noise. Colombia has an extensive bus system, though eco hotels may also offer transportation options.

Eco hotels always have sustainability measures in place, such as using solar energy, collecting rainwater, or building from recycled materials. Some eco hotels are designed using traditional building techniques of the native peoples of the region, making for an interesting cultural experience.

Keep in mind that Colombia’s climate varies from hot and tropical to freezing cold. Air conditioning and heating may not be available at some eco hotels, which might make a difference depending on when you’re traveling.

What to Look for in an Eco Hotel

One of the great things about Colombia is its diversity. Many eco hotels are centered around more popular tourist areas, like the northern Caribbean coast or the central coffee region, but some are located in less visited spots too.

Many of the best eco hotels tend to offer additional services, such as like meals included in the room price, on-site restaurants, and jungle hiking tours. These are a great opportunity to get the most out of your trip.

Since eco hotels range from very basic “back to nature” sort of places to high-end luxury resorts, everyone can find something to fit their preferences and budget. “Glamping” is a popular term used by eco hotels to describe a more luxury camping experience, with large tents, power outlets, and other hotel-quality amenities.

To further compare your options, check out search platforms like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Hostelworld. These are all great ways to refine your search to fit your budget and preferences.

When people travel, they tend to leave behind a lot more than footsteps. The consequences of unfettered tourism in some parts of the world are becoming apparent in the careless consumption of privileged tourists, which threatens the natural and cultural beauty of many places. These problems are compounded by the economic disparities between tourists and locals.

Traveling for a change: Eco-tourism in Colombia

Some organizations are taking up the banner against this kind of exploitation and promoting a new kind of tourism. One country that is taking active steps toward promoting eco-tourism and eco-conscious tourism is Colombia . Suffering from tenacious stereotypes about being a “violence-riddled” region, Colombia is taking strides to shake up what people think of the country by embracing the sustainable practices of eco-friendly tourism.

Eco-Tourism in Colombia

From the heavy beats of reggaeton in clubs in Medellin to the untamed wilderness of the Amazon, to the gentle wash of the Caribbean Sea, Colombia is a country that satisfies all the senses. Drawing visitors from all over the world, tourism in Colombia is characterized by a great diversity of environments. Home to deserts, grasslands, mountains, rainforests, and beaches, it only makes sense to protect this incredible natural heritage.

The government and population of Colombia has taken the lead in promoting ecologically conscious lifestyles and tourism . For example, the capital city of Bogota has built a world-renowned extensive bicycle path system allowing commuters and tourists to navigate the entire city with ease. In addition to minimizing harmful emissions, the use of these paths also provides the opportunity to take the time and soak in the spectacular beauty of Bogota.

Eco-tourism in Colombia helps support traditional farmers and growers

In a revolutionary move to promote eco-tourism in Colombia, Bogota was one of the first major cities to close roads to cars on Sundays, encouraging people to walk, cycle, skate, and dance through the streets instead. For visitors, Sundays are the best days to get out and get involved in the community, joining people in the street celebrating car-free days.

Tourism opportunities like this help fulfill a growing need for authenticity. A sentiment echoing throughout the streets and the reaches of the internet is an irritation with the steady flow of pre-packaged, processed information, and experiences in the tourism industry. Travel experiences and products are becoming increasingly homogenized, and travelers are realizing that a shift in location is not what they were seeking— traveling is a way to challenge oneself to connect with new people, new environments, and new ideas .

In response, companies offering eco-friendly tourism experiences have sprung up. These organisations provide more in-depth opportunities for outsiders to experience the biodiversity and ecological beauty of Colombia . These eco-tours help provide economic support to workers in the tourism industry and the specific focus on conservation and preservation of natural resources and wonders. It also helps to promote awareness of consumption and the effect of tourism on the local environment and community.

Eco-tourism in Colombia shows you a unique side of local culture.

An integral part of this push for conscientious tourism is a commitment to help lessen the economic disparity between the countries hosting and the countries providing tourists. By supporting the organizations behind eco-tourism initiatives, visitors can help people and the environment alike.

How to Get Involved with Eco-Friendly Tourism

Visitors can get a more enriching experience by volunteering in eco-tourism in Colombia . Ethical placements will let volunteers participate in conservation and community projects, supporting these projects while learning valuable lessons at the same time. Volunteer placements can include conservation , organic farming , and wildlife projects .

Eco tours are available for conscientious travelers who want to support a more sustainable form of tourism in Colombia. The county’s meg-diversity make this the ideal place for adventurous travel , with eco-friendly option such as trekking and camping.

Why Colombia is Emerging as the Next Great Ecotourism Hotspot

By Paul Jebara

Colombia is home to over 50,000 animal species—10 percent of all known species in the animal kingdom—including more types of birds than anywhere else on the planet. Naturally, Colombia has been crowned the bird-watching world champion four years in a row , recently winning the Global Big Day contest with 1,288 different bird species recognized in a single day (October 17, 2020). This staggering diversity of flora and fauna is a testament to the astounding range of climates and ecosystems thriving in a country twice the size of Texas, such as lush rainforests and highland moors, sandy beaches and dry forests, and even six high-altitude glaciers. These are all the building blocks Colombia needs to become an ecotourism powerhouse—and at last, all the pieces are coming together.

Golden-Headed Quetzal

If you just scribbled Colombia at the top of your bucket list, you’re not alone. The past few years have seen constant growth in its number of visitors, including a record of 4.5 million in 2019. But unlike other places perceived to be exploited by over-tourism, Colombia is making conscious efforts to move in the opposite direction by building up authentic experiences and tourism infrastructure that are sustainable and eco-friendly.

The Colombian government is among the most vocal advocates for developing ecotourism in its own country. In fact, a “ Natural Wealth” program was developed in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to officially commit to protecting its biodiversity through sustainable ecotourism. ProColombia , the national tourism agency, has collaborated with the nation's Government to develop a slew of tools and initiatives for Colombia to enhance its offerings and join the ranks of other world-class eco-hotspots like Costa Rica and Norway. One example is the Nature Guidance Training Manual (supported by the USAID), a science-based digest of Colombia’s biological heritage, tailored to local tour guides, interpreters, and outdoor enthusiasts. With this training, ProColombia hopes to address potential knowledge gaps head-on, while enhancing the professionalism, credibility, and sustainability standards among nature tour operators in the field. The highly-anticipated manual will be released at ProColombia’s annual Colombia Nature Travel Mart , a networking conference (held virtually this November) that connects businesses across the outdoor and adventure tourism sector.

Colombia’s wide-reaching commitment to eco-tourism holds immense value, and its incredible benefits can be witnessed countrywide. For nature-mad travelers seeking an adventure fix, here are five authentic experiences that’ll have you rushing down in no time. It won’t take long to realize why all of Colombia’s unique natural and cultural marvels must be preserved and protected at all costs.

Petroglyphs of San Jose del Guaviare

Archeological finds and rainbow rivers in Guaviare

Intrepid travelers are quickly catching on to the undiscovered department of Guaviare in the Amazon basin. This rugged corridor in the country’s southeast is replete with archeological jewels, including the notorious rock paintings left by ancient indigenous tribes who conquered the surrounding hills over a thousand years ago. You’ll observe remarkably preserved petroglyphs spread across the towering cave walls of Cerro Azul and Nuevo Tolima, depicting vivid jungle scenes, detailed human characters, and animal-like figures. Then there are Guaviare’s fascinating natural sites, like Caño Lajas, a rainbow-hued river that flows through some of the oldest soils on earth in the sun-soaked foothills of Serranía de La Lindosa.

Exotic wildlife and cowboy adventures in Casanare

The majestic plains (known as llanos ) of the Casanare department are heaven on earth for exotic-wildlife-lovers. One of the greatest spots for observing the region's incredible wildlife is La Aurora, the country’s largest privately-owned animal sanctuary, and natural habitat of hundreds of bird species, caymans, anteaters, capybaras, and güío, a relative of the anaconda. This region east of the Andes and north of the Amazon is also known as “Cowboy Country” due to the abundance of working cattle ranches. Immerse yourself in the full llanero experience by staying in the Corocora Camp , which takes glamping to a whole new level with special handmade tents, crafted by the country’s finest artisans, that are outfitted with unexpected luxuries. While there, discover Colombia’s own cowboy culture with a llanero-led tour on horseback, trotting through sprawling farms and across rivers, before capping off your day with a sumptuous steak dinner.

Coffee Cultural Landscape

Agritourism through Colombia’s coffee heartland

Colombia takes coffee very seriously, producing more of the crop than any other country (save for Brazil). The epicenter of its coffee industry is La Zona Cafetera—also nicknamed the Coffee Axis or Coffee Triangle—a UNESCO-designated swath of land dotted with thermal baths, pretty botanical gardens, and plantations set against the undulating Andean foothills. Colombia’s take on agritourism opens up the World Heritage Coffee Cultural Landscape to visitors through luxury experiences, which can now be found outside traditional growing areas in regions like Huila and Cundinamarca.

Beaches of all kinds to (safely) enjoy

Did you know that Colombia is the only South American country with coasts on both the Pacific and the Caribbean? With over 2,400 miles of coastline, Colombia is blessed with postcard-worthy beaches, mangrove forests, and protected coral reefs teeming with marine life. Cartagena, along with San Andrés and Santa Marta, is among the most popular jump-off points for exploring the northern coast. Of Colombia’s four Blue Flag beaches (an international certification for meeting strict quality standards), three of them are on the Caribbean Sea. But don't forget the stunning beaches of the west coast, which are scattered in and between the towns of Malpelo, Nuquí, and Bahía Solano. With a variety of new pandemic-related biosafety protocols enacted by the Ministry of Health, beachgoers can have peace of mind as they dig their toes into the sand.

Humpback Whales along Colombia's Pacific Coast

Whale-watching on the Pacific Coast

Each year, Colombians celebrate the homecoming of magnificent humpback whales returning from their 6,000-mile migration from Antarctica. From July to November, pods of las yubartas swim off Colombia’s Pacific Coast, where they mate and birth their calves before heading back south for the winter. You can often spot the whales from shore with a pair of binoculars, or even get up close with a certified-sustainable boat tour departing from Gorgona Natural National Park, Málaga Bay, and Nuquí.

An Overview of Ecotourism in Colombia

eco travel in colombia

In many places, tourism has had serious negative consequences as the thoughtless consumption of tourists puts the natural and cultural aspects of an area at risk. Eco-tourism is an emerging type of tourism which fights against the exploitation of countries in the name of tourism. Colombia is an example of a country which is taking the lead in pushing for an ecologically aware lifestyle and tourist industry.

Colombia is a top destination for nature tourism as it is the most bio-diverse country in the world per square meter. This is thanks to a large variety of climates, including rainforest , dry forest, moors, and glaciers.

In Colombia, tourism is the main driver behind job creation and foreign currency. Furthermore, its primary tourist appeal is nature and adventure travel, so it’s vital that steps are taken to protect the country’s natural beauty. The government and its tourism agency, ProColombia , have developed a code of conduct of sorts for tour operators to make sure there won’t be a negative impact on local communities and the environment.

Ecotourism at Work in Colombia

Valle Del Cocora, Colombia

One example of ecotourism at its best in Colombia is the operation of the Utria National Park in the department of Chocó . The area is extremely biodiverse , and home to some of the rarest birds on the planet. It is also culturally significant as its resident communities still follow many traditional customs. The number of tourists to the area more than doubled in 2016 due to the promotion of the site as an eco-tourism experience, usually focused on whale watching and bird watching . The national park also runs educational tours for local schools to impart on the younger generation the importance of preserving biodiversity .

According to Rita Leigh, travel blogger at Writemyx and Britstudent: “ Now that rural communities have seen that birdwatching is a viable economic alternative, people who previously hunted birds or caught them for the illegal pet trade are now tour guides, and ranches have stopped cutting down their trees to encourage birds to come to their properties, thereby assuring more visitors will come ”.

Another example of ecotourism in Colombia are the advances in Colombia towards a greener capital . It has recently built a bicycle path system throughout the city which is now world-renowned. Not only do these reduce emissions, but they also allow tourists to explore the city at a more leisurely and eco-friendly way. Bogota has also closed roads to cars on Sundays, which is almost unheard of in other major cities. Instead, on Sundays, you can find locals and tourists alike walking , skating, biking and dancing in the streets .

La Candelaria, Bogotá, Colombia

There has also been a shift for farmers and growers towards ecotourism alternatives. A company called Ecodestinos is supporting former coca farmers who are now venturing into community tourism. The company is working with various rural communities on developing pharmaceutical products from local plants, offering food and farming tours, and running canoeing trips .

Get Involved in Ecotourism in Colombia

Rainforest in Colombia

If you’re interested in eco-friendly tourism and you want to get involved beyond exploring Colombia’s rich natural and cultural landscape, visitors can volunteer in eco-tourism. Martin Needham , an ecotourism writer at 1Day2write and Australia2write , suggests looking into “ ethical placements which allow volunteers to get involved in conservation efforts and community initiatives. These placements include conservation, organic farming , and wildlife projects . ”

If you don’t have time to volunteer on your travels, consider eco tours such as trekking , camping and eco-friendly accommodations .

The number of international tourists to Colombia’s National Parks increased by more than a third in 2016. This is a sign that interest in ecotourism is growing and Colombia is a top destination for it.
