Day 1 : Fly to London

Relax during an overnight flight to Great Britain.

Day 2 : Hampton Court Palace

In London we are warmly welcomed by our British Blue Badge Guide, the most experienced guides in the UK whose enthusiastic passion for British history and traditions enhance our introduction to London. We then depart for Hampton Court Palace, Henry VIII’s favorite palace. Located on the River Thames, Hampton Court Palace was one of England’s most modern, sophisticated, and magnificent homes of its time. Explore Henry’s opulent State Apartments, tour the vast Tudor Kitchens, and feel the eerie chill of the Haunted Gallery before strolling the glorious gardens. In the evening we settle into our accommodations in central London and get to know our fellow travelers during a Holiday Vacations Welcome Dinner.

Day 3 : Shakespeare's Globe or Buckingham Palace

For departures in the spring, we travel to the South Bank of the River Thames to visit Shakespeare’s Globe, a faithful reconstruction of the Elizabethan playhouse best known for hosting William Shakespeare’s influential plays. Explore the theater grounds, its exhibitions, and an Elizabethan costume demonstration. For our September departure, we tour glorious Buckingham Palace, the headquarters of the United Kingdom’s monarchy. Tour the opulent staterooms used by the royal family for public events and ceremonies, the throne room, and the garden where the King holds his annual garden party. Next, savor a fish and chips lunch. The remainder of the day is ours to discover everything London has to offer.

Day 4 : London City Tour

After an included English Breakfast, we arrive at the Tower of London and learn about its legendary past, see Britain’s Crown Jewels, the armory and much more. View the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and the Prime Minister’s Office on Downing Street, plus Piccadilly Circus and Buckingham Palace. Look forward to views of the city from the River Thames on a cruise. Our tour ends with a full afternoon tea complete with finger sandwiches, expertly brewed tea, freshly baked pastries, and scones with jam.

Day 5 : Bletchley Park & Oxford

We travel northwest of London to tour Bletchley Park, where Alan Turing and many others worked in secret to unlock the German Enigma Machine during World War II. Explore the Visitor Center and the Codebreaking Huts. After, we travel to Oxford, known as the City of Dreaming Spires. We go on a walking tour of Oxford’s city center with our Blue Badge Guide, visiting local markets, Christchurch Cathedral and more.

Day 6 : Blenheim Palace & Bath

This morning we travel to Woodstock and the ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill. The principal residence of the Dukes of Marlborough, this is the only non-royal country house to hold the title of palace. Filled with marvelous treasures, this 187-room home is truly a wonder. This afternoon, we journey to Bath for a guided walking tour that includes the UNESCO World Heritage Roman Baths before checking in to our comfortable accommodations.

Day 7 : Greenway House

Next, we journey down to Devon and take a ferry to visit Greenway, the vacation home of worldwide best-selling mystery author Agatha Christie, located on a hill overlooking the River Dart. Filled with treasures Agatha collected from her travels around the world, today the home reflects how it looked when she spent her summers there. Our accommodations for the next two nights are in Plymouth.

Day 8 : Port Isaac & Cornwall

Our destination today is Cornwall, and our local guide is also an extra in a famous television series. We embark on a walking tour of the picturesque village of Port Isaac, the setting for a popular British medical drama-comedy. In the afternoon you may spend time at leisure in the village of Tintagel or visit the remains of Tintagel Castle, steeped in the legend of King Arthur with magnificent views of the Cornish Coast. Our dinner this evening is at Jamaica Inn, once a haven for smugglers and shipwreck looters, and the setting to the famous Daphne du Maurier mystery novel, Jamaica Inn .

Day 9 : Stonehenge

After a leisurely breakfast, we travel to the Salisbury Plain for a tour of its most fascinating landmark. One of the most recognized prehistoric monuments in the world, few places have generated more speculation than the mysterious circle of standing stones known as Stonehenge. We have the afternoon to learn about the site, then travel east to the historic town of Windsor.

Day 10 : Windsor Castle

Today we visit Windsor Castle, the final resting place of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the oldest and largest continuously-occupied castle in the world. Prominently situated on 26 acres high above the River Thames, the castle features magnificent state apartments, St. George’s Chapel, and Queen Mary’s Doll House, a masterpiece in miniature. Have the rest of the afternoon on your own in Windsor. Tonight we feast with fellow travelers at a Holiday Vacations Farewell Dinner, celebrating our final evening on the Sceptered Isle.

Edward Elgar approaching Sharpness

Cruising the River Severn on Edward Elgar

David Powell takes an English river cruise in the Severn Valley

Boarding the charming Edward Elgar, all vintage cream with maroon trim, feels like walking into an Agatha Christie novel. There are no Art Deco interiors or chandeliers, but it has a quirky English atmosphere and its multi-talented crew of five couldn’t be more friendly.

At just 88ft, with only 11 double cabins, the 3 deck Edward Elgar was purpose-built for English Holiday Cruises to sail the River Severn and Gloucester Sharpness Canal and has been certified a four-star hotel boat by Visit England. There's a cosy bar, a lounge that doubles as a dining room and an open deck for taking in the views as you glide serenely through green and pleasant Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, and it’s a lovely place to call home for a few days. Comfort is a priority on board with quality seating, mattresses and furnishings.

Tea and coffee is always available and there’s home-made cake each afternoon as well as unlimited house wine, beer, spirits and soft drinks. Every day there’s a free excursion and at night the crew will entertain you with quizzes and singalongs – and there’s also free wifi. An advanced battery system means there is no need to run generators at night ensuring the boat is perfectly quiet at her mooring.

The cabins have twin beds and en-suite shower rooms, with reduced rates for single occupancy on every cruise, and although they’re small they’re beautifully kitted out.

We joined at The Boathouse, the company’s canal-side HQ, near Gloucester’s superbly restored historic docks, where the Georgian warehouses are now home to bars and restaurants, with museums and cathedral a short walk away. English Holiday Cruises offer a secure parking facility at the boathouse and after a welcome lunch and drinks, we were off on our adventures, sailing to Frampton on Severn for a guided tour of Berkeley Castle in the Cotswolds, a 12th-century Norman keep with fabulous medieval kitchen and glorious gardens.

Back on the boat we enjoyed a delicious home-cooked dinner on the way to Purton along the world’s first shipping canal, mooring for the night within sight of the River Severn where it widens before flowing into the sea.

Pictures show Edward Elgar cruising the River Severn, one of the cosy comfortable cabins and the lounge dining area

Up bright and early I took a pre-breakfast walk to see Purton Hulks Barge Graveyard on the river – a surreal collection of old boats and barges deliberately sunk to prevent the river’s banks breaking. It was fascinating to see how nature has colonised these old wooden and even concrete vessels. I was definitely ready for breakfast after my walk and tucked into a full English, although there were lighter offerings such as French toast with cinnamon.

The dining room has picture windows so we could watch the world go by even when eating, and during breakfast we sailed the canal towards Slimbridge Wetland Centre for an included tour to see the hundreds of swans, ducks, geese –even flamingos. There were taxis on hand to take us to and from the centre, although it was an easy walk from the boat. As well as wildfowl there was Scott House Museum where World Wildlife Fund founder Sir Peter Scott lived when he set up the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. The artist and TV broadcaster – a friend of fellow conservation pioneer Sir David Attenborough – was the son of Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott and many of his wildlife paintings are on display in the house and visitor centre.

Back onboard we sailed for historic Gloucester Docks and a visit that most guests were eagerly looking forward to - the late afternoon Gloucester Brewery tour with gin tasting included!

Pictures: Aerial view of Edward Elgar and overnight mooring at Purton Hulks. Bar area at front and Slimbridge Wetland Centre

Next day we sailed along the river to Upton-upon-Severn in Worcestershire, arriving after lunch to be taken by coach to Croome Court. Now looked after by the National Trust, the estate has a fascinating history. The parkland was Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown’s first major landscape gardening project and made his name. Started in 1750 it includes a lake with a Chinese bridge and a grotto once lined with semi-precious stones. Part of the 18th-century neo-Palladian house, also designed by Brown with superb interiors by architect Robert Adam, is now open after restoration, but our favourite part was the RAF Defford museum.

The quirky displays in old RAF buildings reveal how the place was used for radar testing during the Second World War and Cold War operations.

That night we were moored in Upton, so we had the chance to explore the town’s pretty streets of half-timbered and Georgian buildings. Most famous is the Pepper Pot – the remains of a church tower – which is central to several music festivals each year. After dinner we enjoyed sloping off to Ye Olde Anchor Inn, a ‘black and white’ half-timbered pub with leaded windows, low ceilings and beams.

Worcester the next day was a revelation. The cathedral is one of the finest in the country and once so important that Richard the Lionheart’s brother King John is buried here. My cruise was over far too soon and as I reflected on the friendly atmosphere, new friends made and the excellent food and service I thought maybe next time the full 6-night cruise!

English Holiday Cruises runs two, three, five and six-night trips in the Severn Vale, with its six-night Classic Severn Cruise available May to September.

All are round-trips from Gloucester with the longer itineraries a mix of stops along the River Severn and Gloucester Sharpness Canal, while the three and two-night cruises are confined to the canal and run only in April and October. And for those who want to extend their stay in this gorgeous region there are hotel packages available

Guide to Planning a Trip

There are so many different vacation packages to choose from when visiting England, let’s break it down and give you a few important things to consider!

Winchester Cathedral

Where to Visit? England, Scotland, Britain, UK, United Kingdom….

This can get confusing so let’s start out by getting a few things straight!

England is part of what is officially called The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland . That’s a very long name to keep using! So to make things a little easier, we’ll just call it the UK.

The UK is made up of 4 regions – England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland . And across the border from Northern Ireland lies the country of Ireland (which is totally independent from the UK.)

So the first question to ask when looking for an England vacation package. Are you looking just to visit England? Or do you also want to visit other parts of the United Kingdom as well?

There are a few ways to plan an England Vacation Package. You could visit:

100% England Packages (we’ve got plenty of amazing things to see here!)

England with Scotland Packages: Combine a trip and go to Scotland as well!

England, Scotland & Ireland Packages : The big trip! These vacation packages sometimes also include Northern Ireland as well. For this size of trip, we recommend packages that are at least 2 weeks long!

And what about Wales? Many of the vacation packages also include 1 or 2 days in Wales

So in this article, we’ll divide up our vacation packages into 4 – ‘100% England Packages’, ‘England & Scotland Packages’, ‘England & Ireland Packages’ & finally ‘Special Packages’

What are our special vacation packages ? Well… these are packages that are based around a specific theme or event. In 2024, we have the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo Parade in July.

Plus we’ve got some amazing vacation packages for Downton Abbey fans, Game of Thrones fans, Outlander fans, as well as some awesome walking trips, railway trips and even adventure trips!

That’s a lot of England vacation packages to sift through! So please use the contents at the top of the page to navigate directly to what interests you.

We hope you find this guide useful. Please contact the Tourist England team if you have any questions!

english holiday cruises tours

How much would a trip to England cost?

This really depends on the length of your vacation package and the size of the group. Prices can range anywhere from $1,800 per person for an 8 day trip in a large group to over $5,000 for a 14-day small-group tour of England.

How many days do you need in England?

We would say that at least 7 days is a good amount of time to explore many of the highlights of England and get a feel for the country. Of course, you could easily spend many more days exploring the best of England, Scotland and Ireland with our amazing vacation packages from London !

How Can I spend 10 days in the UK?

We have many package tours that are 10 days in duration. Typically these trips depart from London and you can expect to spend 7-8 days in England, with 2-3 days in Scotland. With these kinds of holidays, you will normally travel in a loop, travelling north from London along the east side of England, heading into Scotland and then returning to London via the west side of England, with a little bit of Wales as well. Regions you’ll visit include Yorkshire, the Lake District, Scotland and London.

Do these vacation packages include financing options?

Many of the packages offer financing options, allowing you to spread out the cost of the trip over multiple payments. Many of the tours also require a low-value deposit in order to secure your place on the tour.

Do all-inclusive vacations get cheaper closer to date?

Normally booking well in advance is a good way to get a great price on vacation deals, since travel companies like people to book early. Vacation packages will only get cheaper closer to the travel date if the travel company is struggling to fill up the tour.

Is there a package to London and Paris?

We have a 9-day London and Paris vacation package that’s perfect for you! Spend a few days in London before hopping over the English channel and spend some time exploring the French capital.

Do you have mini-vacation packages to England?

Yes, we also have a selection of multi-day tours from London that last 2-5 days, as well as Scotland minibreaks from Edinburgh . These are great options if you are looking to visit a lot of sights but are pressed for time.

We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Going on a holiday needn’t be a fraught experience …

The experts: travel agents on 20 ways to book a sustainable and sensational summer holiday

Keen to get away? Here is how to find a great deal, pick the perfect destination and support the local community

A holiday should be relaxing, but booking one can be a fraught experience, with days lost to endless scrolling, comparing reviews and prices. How can you be sure you are getting a good deal? Travel agents share their tips for the most affordable, sustainable and memorable trips.

1. Book like an agent

“Everybody views themselves as a travel agent and they can be up to a point,” says Paul Sharp from Newcastle upon Tyne, who operates as part of the Travel Counsellors network and has 30 years’ experience in the industry. He says the rise of budget airlines and online booking have led to people feeling confident about organising trips themselves. What is the one thing we should know when doing so? “It is a false economy to book things separately because you have no protection,” Sharp says. He gives the example of someone planning a trip to South Africa to watch rugby, who booked flights with the airline and hotels directly and rugby tickets elsewhere. The game was cancelled but the flights and hotel were non-refundable. If they had been booked together, the trip would have been covered under package travel regulations. “Book with a company you trust and know – there are a lot of sites that crop up and you don’t really know their provenance,” he says.

2. Be an early bird

“Planning in advance is always going to be better value,” says Helen Youngman , an independent travel agent and partner at 360 Private Travel , based near Norwich. “Late deals do exist, but a lot of hotels use ‘dynamic pricing’, which means prices increase as availability goes down. Flights are only going to increase in price the closer you get to the departure date because the fuller the flight gets, the more expensive it will be.” Sharp adds: “Don’t hang on for a last-minute deal because you could end up disappointed. Scheduled flights tend to be available about 11 months in advance, so that is the best time to book. Also, at that stage, a lot of hotels and accommodation providers will have early-bird specials.”

3. If you do book late, be flexible

Be open-minded …

Jessica Bollinger, who works in the Bristol branch of Danish travel agent Kilroy , which specialises in youth and adventure holidays, agrees that late deals are now something of a myth. “They are not unheard of, but with a last-minute deal there are certain things you’re not going to get. So you have to be really open-minded as to where you’re going to go,” she says.

4. Avoid peak season

The cheapest time to travel is always outside the school holidays, says Youngman, with Christmas and new year the most expensive times. Can you get a good deal if you fly on Christmas or New Year’s Day itself? Sometimes, she says, “but a lot of people are catching on to that trick”. If you have to go in the school holidays, be open to going somewhere off the beaten track. “Being clever about destinations is a good plan,” says Youngman. “In Europe, look farther east at places such as Montenegro, Albania and Georgia. And Morocco is a good summer destination for families.”

5. Midweek can be more affordable

“Midweek can be cheaper, it just depends on availability,” says Youngman. “A Thursday to Monday trip is going to be slightly more expensive than Monday to Friday, but all travel fares are based on availability, so the further in advance you can book, the better.”

6. Take out travel insurance when you book

A lot of people sort out their insurance at the airport, says Sharp, but it is best to do it as soon as you have booked your trip. He says: “Travel insurance doesn’t just cover you if you lose a bag or are poorly while you are away. It also covers you should you need to cancel for an insurable reason before you travel.” This includes illness or a bereavement.

7. On solo trips, consider a group tour

‘Some companies offer specialist female-only tours.’

If you are travelling alone, “pretty much anywhere is possible”, says Youngman. “Embarking on your first solo trip can be daunting, which is why small group tours are an amazing way to travel with like-minded people. Some companies I work with are doing specialist female-only tours with visits to female entrepreneurs, co-operatives, makers and bakers. Small group tours are great because they handle all the logistics, include really immersive experiences and are safe. They pick you up from the airport, and from that point onwards, you’re travelling with other people and you’ve got an expert guide.”

8. Have a daily budget

“We advise setting a daily limit for yourself while travelling and then multiplying that number by the days you are away to get the amount to save for your spending money,” says Bollinger. “When you work it out like this, it makes a lot more sense in people’s minds, especially young people who don’t have much budgeting experience. It also keeps you accountable to yourself, so you don’t blow everything right at the beginning and then have nothing left for the end.” To stick to a tight budget, she says: “Cook food as you go along and use public transport instead of tourist buses – this will really help you save money.”

9. Consider all-inclusive options

“If you are going to spend a lot of time eating and drinking in the hotel, I recommend upgrading to an all-inclusive option if possible,” says Youngman, “especially if you’d like a cocktail or two and you’re grazing throughout the day. Otherwise it can all add up and when you check out it costs a fortune.” With active holidays such as skiing or safaris, she adds: “If you have the option to choose an all-inclusive package that includes the activities, food and drink, that is usually a more cost-effective way of travelling. Because sometimes they will really sting you on the extras and it will be more expensive.”

10. Work your way around the world

“A working holiday is a great way to fund your trip,” says Bollinger, who helps people book travel to Australia, New Zealand and Canada by organising working holidays so they can extend their stay. “A lot of jobs will be hospitality-related, but if you go to a more rural spot you can do farm work, and if you have qualifications already, sometimes those can be used. Working holidays in Canada are often at ski resorts near Vancouver, so you get the added benefit of being in a beautiful place to take advantage of the winter sports.”

11. Travel as sustainably as possible

‘By travelling sustainably, you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you.’

“You can get to most places in Europe by train , so if you are open to slowing down and having a more relaxed itinerary, not only are you travelling more sustainably, but you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you,” says Youngman. “Be good to the environment you are travelling to see.” She stresses the importance of limiting flights as much as possible, especially internally, and avoiding indirect long-haul options. “We highly recommend ‘open-jaw flights’, which means you fly into one destination and out of another, to limit the number of flights,” says Bollinger. “We also promote travelling for longer in one destination as opposed to trying to go to many in a short time, and travelling overland when possible, instead of taking multiple flights.”

12. Offset carbon emissions with a reputable company

When considering carbon from flights, says Thomas Power of Pura Aventura , a B Corp sustainable travel company in Brighton: “Don’t believe the airline schemes, or anyone else who promises you absolution for a few quid. While 85% of offset schemes may be worthless, there are high-quality carbon credits starting at about £20 a tonne.” These can be bought to compensate for CO 2 emissions. Companies such as “ C Level help you at least take positive action to balance your impact”, says Power.

13. Think of responsible travel as a ‘fair exchange’

When travelling, says Power, consider: “What are we giving and what are we receiving? Is it a fair exchange? Is somebody getting something in return for what I am receiving in this transaction?” This applies to everything from “taking a cruise to Venice and not giving anything to the city, to going camping in Sussex and getting a supermarket delivery to your tent instead of going to the village shop or buying eggs from the house down the road”. This concept of “fair exchange” can be beneficial for everyone, he says, by giving you access to unique experiences. “In terms of the economy, the less money that leaves the village, town or city, the better,” he says.

14. Embrace the great outdoors

‘The carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays.’

If you camp out “you are closer to nature than any other accommodation option”, says Brodie Farrow, of the online camping and touring travel agent Pitchup . There are many benefits to this, she says: “It is really good for mental health. It is also a much more sustainable option: the carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays, as people travel by car rather than flying and it promotes local produce and low-impact activities such as hiking in the surrounding area. The accommodation or pitches are much less carbon intensive than hotels, too. And you have a positive impact on the community that you are visiting: camping attracts a higher number of customers at a lower cost than hotels do, which can help to underpin the viability of local facilities such as the shop, the bar and takeaway, and that benefits the wider community.”

15. If you are camping-phobic, glamp

“There really is something for everyone,” says Farrow. “You can get glamping accommodation with four-poster beds if you prefer camping in luxury, or you can go really wild and remote, with no facilities, out on your own and back to nature. I think you would be hard-pressed to say that there is nothing that appeals.” Although glamping has become a fairly pricey option, she says: “Some types are much cheaper than others. You can get some ‘pod-only’ camping accommodation, where you bring your own bedding, starting from £15 a night.”

16. If the weather is terrible …

… And you are under canvas, “try to keep your bedroom a wet-gear-free zone”, says Farrow. “Store and dry wet stuff in your porch area rather than in your bedroom compartment. Protect your equipment by putting it in plastic bags or dry bags. Don’t let anything touch your tent walls or you will have soggy socks.” For activities, she suggests, “swimming in the sea, because you are wet already, or going to the pub”. If you are disappointed by the weather on a non-camping holiday, “as annoying as it is, try to embrace it”, says Sharp. Many people come back from their holidays exhausted because they try to see and do everything when they’re away. Instead, he says: “Have a lie-in, ask local people which is the best restaurant for a long, lazy lunch and, most of all, relax and recharge your batteries – it’s a holiday after all.”

17. For best value destinations, try …

Belgrade has an underground culture scene similar to Berlin 20 years ago.

“Go for Belgrade over Berlin,” says Youngman. “It has an underground culture scene very similar to Berlin 20 years ago.” For backpackers, Bollinger suggests: “Some places in Central America can be really affordable. Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala are good options for someone wanting to think outside the box.” Sharp says there are more affordable options in “Cyprus, Bulgaria, Turkey and Egypt, compared with Spain and the Balearics, which are becoming increasingly expensive due to cost of living increases”. If you are looking for a staycation, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Cornwall are some of the most popular UK locations on Pitchup, says Farrow, which can inflate the price. Locations such as Pembrokeshire and the Isle of Wight are cheaper.

18. For a trip of a lifetime that doesn’t cost the earth …

“North Macedonia is just amazing,” says Youngman. “Ohrid has beautiful cobbled streets, Ottoman architecture , fantastic food and wine and you can visit the most biodiverse lake in Europe.” Farrow says: “I camped at the foot of Ben Nevis last year before hiking up it. The weather was terrible but it was worth it for the unreal views.” While Bollinger’s most memorable trip was “Interrailing in Europe and finding a way to do things on my own. It was before smartphones, so it was a very interesting experience and built up my confidence in travelling.”

19. If in doubt, follow local people

“Live like a local person by taking local buses and eating in local spots,” says Bollinger. “It is going to save you money, and will also let you experience life in a different way.” Power adds: “People want to go to Peru but they never come back talking about Machu Picchu, they come back talking about the people they met. Buy local and connections will happen for you. In the absence of interaction with your host community, the things you see are just wallpaper.”

20. And remember: you get what you pay for

“If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is,” says Sharp.
