It’s commonly known as being the best home base for those exploring Rocky Mountain National Park and is truly a treat itself.

We are Denver locals and travel to Estes Park fairly often – though it is a bit touristy, it’s truly one of the most magical places in the Denver area.

With so many Estes Park activities available, it can be hard to choose exactly what’s worth doing, especially if you’re visiting on a time crunch.

Top Things to do in Estes Park

Ride the estes park aerial tramway.

If you’re hoping to do some sightseeing in Estes Park, don’t overlook the Estes Park Aerial Tramway . This fun ride may only be 3.5 minutes long, but it’ll bring you up 1100 feet, and the views are absolutely impeccable.

The tram was built by Robert Heron and officially opened to the public in 1955. It instantly became a local (and tourist) favorite because it brings guests right up to the top of Prospect Mountain. To this day, it’s still owned by Heron’s family!

One thing to be aware of is that, unfortunately, if you’re looking for things to do in Estes Park in winter , the tram will be closed. It’s open seasonally and usually opens around Memorial Day weekend.

It costs about $16 per adult, $14 for seniors, and $10 for children aged 6-11. Those under 5 ride free!

Shop Locally Downtown

One of the things to do in downtown Estes Park is to go shopping! This is the perfect way to support the locals. In fact, 99% of the shops downtown are completely locally owned, besides a few chain stores.

Throughout the downtown area, you’ll find candy shops, an old movie theater, restaurants, and more. Plus, there are so many great souvenir shops, so even if you’re a picky souvenir shopper, you’ll be able to find just the perfect souvenir to take home.

On average, shopping downtown can take anywhere from one hour to an entire afternoon. It fully depends on how many shops you go into.

Enjoy the Estes Park Riverwalk

If you’re looking for free things to do in Estes Park, then consider doing the Estes Park Riverwalk. There’s free parking right near Fall River, and then you can spend some time just walking all the way around the body of water.

The path itself is around 3.5 miles long, but the views are incredible, so it really won’t take that long to walk it. Plus, it’s fairly flat, making it very accessible, and it’s also stroller-friendly.

If you want to get out on the water, be sure to head to the Lake Estes Marina and rent a kayak!

Have a Drink at a Local Distillery

Head over to Elkins Distilling Co. and try some of the first legally-made whiskies from Estes Park! There’s an amazing tasting room experience right near Lake Estes, where you can support this local shop that opened in 2016.

They have a wide variety of whiskies, including corn whisky, Elkins apple, Colorado whisky, and even fire whisky. The best way to try them and find which one you love most is by stopping by the tasting room, so be sure to do that during your trip!

Having some whisky at the Elkins Distilling Co tasting room is one of the best things to do in Estes Park for couples.

Learn at the Estes Park Museum

Interested in learning more about Estes Park and the surrounding area? Be sure to visit the Estes Park Museum .

Though it may be small, it’s the perfect spot to visit on a rainy day and includes exhibits and artifacts dating back 100 years. The building itself was even built in the early 1900s.

One of the best parts about the museum is that it’s absolutely free, so there’s no harm at all in visiting.

Plus, stopping by the museum is the perfect opportunity to ask the workers questions if you want to know anything else about the beautiful Estes Park during your trip.

Drive the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway

Have a bit more time on your hands? One of the most fun things to do around Estes Park is to drive the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway.

It’s 55 miles in total and goes between Estes Park and Central City, offering some of the best views that you can get in this area of Colorado.

Along the way, there are so many incredible places to stop at. Some popular pullover stops include Allenspark, Ward, Nederland, and Black Hawk (right near Central City).

Once you’re done with the drive, you can even pop over to Idaho Springs and have one of the best pizzas in Colorado at Beau Jo’s .

If you’re really into history, then you’ll absolutely love the byway because there are tons of gold mines along the drive. You may even find people panning for gold along the way! Some of the different historic mines are also still open to the public.

See a Show at Park Theatre

Park Theatre is a historic movie theatre that is still in action today! Stop by to see a show inside a vintage theatre; you absolutely won’t regret it. Plus, it’s located right near downtown, so it’s impossible to miss and is very easy to get to.

They’re open seasonally, and their upcoming films can be seen online. They’re not your average movie theatre, as they often play older titles mixed with a few modern ones! No matter what you choose to see at the movie theatre, you’ll have an amazing time.

Go White Water Rafting

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, white water rafting is the perfect activity for you! The Rocky Mountains are home to some of the best white water rafting in the country, and Estes Park is a great place to start.

Believe it or not, one of the things to see in Estes Park is the stars! Because Estes Park is further out from Denver, the night sky is so clear that it’s almost unbelievable. Plus, there are quite a few spots to go stargazing throughout the town.

The best spot, easily, is in Rocky Mountain National Park . Head into the park in the evening and find a great spot to sit.

Many people will head up to the Bear Lake area, but there are tons of private picnic areas throughout the park where you can watch the stars in the evening.

Take a Class at Colorado Mountain School

Have you always wondered how to rock climb or been interested in learning how to? Well, Colorado Mountain School is the place to go!

Open since the 80s, this school offers a wide variety of different courses, no matter what your skill level is.

One of the most popular courses is Intro to Rock Climbing, which is just $199 per person. It’s a day-long course where you’ll get introduced to rock climbing as well as all of the basics.

Reservations can be made online, but they also have walk-in hours that change depending on the time of year. This is such a fun activity if you’re visiting the area with children, planning a party, or even having a gathering with family.

Learn at the Estes Park Memorial Observatory

The Estes Park Memorial Observatory is a great place to check out in town that’s pretty underrated. This local establishment focuses on educating younger generations about astronomy and science and hosts many events throughout the year.

The best way to enjoy the observatory is by making a reservation ahead of time. While they don’t do online reservations, you can check out their website and make a call to hold your date.

Spend the Night at The Stanley Hotel

The Stanley Hotel is one of the most historical spots to visit in Estes Park and absolutely should not be overlooked. It’s pretty hard to miss it with its bright maroon and white exterior!

In addition, fans of Stephen King may know a bit about this hotel already! It’s said to have been King’s inspiration for The Shining .

Just one night in the hotel, and you may be able to find out why quickly!

Spend a Day in Rocky Mountain National Park

Yes, even just one day in Rocky Mountain National Park is perfect to see the highlights! This park is one of the most popularly visited in the United States, and with the incredible hikes , alpine lakes, and scenic roads, it’s easy to understand why.

One of the best things to do in RMNP is to hike up to Emerald Lake . It’s a fairly moderate hike, but the time passes quickly because you pass about four other lakes and even a waterfall on the way! In total, it takes about four hours.

For an even more fun time, add Lake Haiyaha to the Emerald Lake hike. This is one of the most beautiful bright blue lakes you’ll ever see, and it doesn’t add that much more length to the trek!

If you’re hiking in winter, be sure to bring metal spikes for the bottom of your shoes to make sure you don’t slip. I’ve done many winter hikes there, and people always try to hike with sneakers. Trust me; it’s not a pretty sight!

Visiting in the winter means you don’t have to get a timed entry permit. If you are visiting spring through fall, make sure you make a permit reservation well in advance.

Try a Sweet at Purple Mountain Taffy Company

There’s almost always a line outside Purple Mountain Taffy Company, and that’s because visiting there is one of the best things to do in Estes Park, Colorado. This sweet shop has tons of taffy, and you’ll definitely want to fill up a bucket with your favorites!

Even though the line is long, just know that it’s very much worth it. Try to visit earlier in the morning if you want to avoid the crowds that come later in the day.

Ride the Estes Park Trolley

Get a beautiful tour of Estes Park by hopping on the Estes Park Trolley ! This is a fun activity for families and couples, especially visiting the area.

The most popular tour, as you may probably have guessed, is the Rocky Mountain National Park tour.

This three-hour tour runs year-round (as long as the weather isn’t terrible) and offers a great tour of RMNP. It’s one of the most visited parks in the country for a reason!

Along the way, there are excellent stops to take photos, including at Sprague Lake . There’s also one small hike as well. Ticket prices are $75 for adults and $35 for children.

Have a Handcrafted Local Wine at Snowy Peaks Winery

Should you be visiting Estes Park for a girl’s weekend, or you’re looking for a romantic evening out, look no further than Snowy Peaks Winery ! This local winery may be small, but they have some of the best drinks in this area of Colorado.

They’re located right in Estes Park and even have a tasting room where you can try some of their wines, which have won awards. Plus, it’s fairly affordable to do sampling at just $9 for around five different wine tastings!

What’s even better is that Snowy Peaks Winery is open every day of the week all year. So, no matter what time of year you’re visiting, you’ll be able to enjoy this local spot!

Play a Round of Golf at Meadow Mini Golf Course

Who doesn’t love mini-golf? If you’re looking for something to do and you want to enjoy the great outdoors (as you should in Colorado), then consider paying a visit to Meadow Mini Golf .

Here, you can take in the beautiful Estes Park views while having a bit of rivalry among friends!

Note that this is another of the more seasonal activities in Estes Park because it’s only open in the summer. However, it’s also one of the more historical attractions, dating back over 50 years!

While there, be sure to ask about some of the special holes. There are a few where if you get a hole-in-one, you’ll receive an entire free round on the house!

Attend the Longs Peak Scottish Irish Highland Festival

Even though it’s one of the things to do near Estes Park, many people don’t even know that the Longs Peak Scottish Irish Highland Festival even exists! However, it’s been going on for 46 years and counting as of 2022.

This event normally takes place in September over the course of a weekend. There are normally live bands, whiskey tastings, and more. Plus, it’s all right by some of the most beautiful views in the area! Tickets can be purchased online in advance.

Go to Aiden Sinclair’s Underground

If you’re looking for stuff to do in Estes Park, consider heading to Aidan Sinclair’s Underground . This is one of the more unique experiences that you can have in the town, and truthfully, it’s still something that’s not as popular as you think it would be!

This is basically an immersive magic show in a speakeasy at The Stanley Hotel. There are exclusive seats available, so be sure to book your tickets in advance to make sure you’re able to go for your visit.

Have breakfast at The Egg of Estes

The #1 most popular place to eat breakfast in Estes Park is The Egg of Estes! If you’re looking for a tasty bite to eat in the morning, this is it. Keep in mind that because it’s so popular, you may have to wait once you get there.

I absolutely love going to eat breakfast here after a nice morning hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. Nothing beats a tasty meal after an early morning.

Ride the Estes Park Tramway for incredible views.

A mere 3 and a half minute ride in Estes Park’s charming red tramway will deliver you to the top of Prospect Mountain, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding valley and mountains.

The tramway is one of the most popular attractions in Estes Park, so consider going outside of peak hours to avoid the crowds!

It is open daily from May-September, and then only on weekends in September (if the weather allows, of course).

Browse the shops downtown.

Though small, Estes Park has one of our favorite downtown centers of any small town we’ve visited in the USA.

With its charming architecture, beautiful river views, and a huge variety of restaurants and shops selling everything from standard souvenirs and homemade fudge to local art, it’s a joy to wander through (in our case, with a cup of coffee in hand each morning).

If you love perusing historic treasures, don’t miss Fall River Jewelry and Antiques , which is one of the coolest antique stores we’ve ever visited!

Whether you’re looking for a unique souvenir or a letter handwritten by George Washington (seriously), you’re bound to find something memorable.

… and snap a photo with the beautiful Park Theatre.

Built in 1913, the distinctive Park Theatre is one of the most recognizable buildings in Estes Park, and a must-see while in town (follow the river into the center of town, and you’ll find it).

If you happen to have bad luck with the weather during your vacation, you can even add seeing a movie here to your list of what to do in Estes Park.

The theatre plays both classics and new releases.

Get incredible views at the Estes Park Memorial Observatory.

To experience beautiful night skies near Estes Park, all you need to do is go outside and look up!

For the best views, though, head to the Estes Park Memorial Observatory .

Visit Estes Park’s laid-back breweries.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Colorado without a trip (or several) to a local brewery!

Estes Park has several breweries to choose from (plus a winery thrown in for a bit of variety), so you’ll have no problem finding a delicious burger and local beer to enjoy after a long hike.

Stroll along the Riverwalk.

Winding through town parallel to the Big Thompson/Fall River, the Estes Park Riverwalk is one of my favorite places in town. 

Combining all the charm of downtown (and the resulting easy access to snacks and shops) with all the beauty that people come to Colorado to experience, it’s one of the best places to visit in Estes Park, CO.

Go horseback riding in the Rockies.

While there are many ways to enjoy the iconic soaring peaks and sweeping valleys of the Rockies during a trip to Estes Park, horseback certainly has to be one of the best!

There are stables available for trail rides both in and outside Rocky Mountain National Park.

(Safely) observe elk.

You can find elk just about everywhere in Estes Park, from the visitor’s center to the golf course to the river itself.

It’s one of the coolest things about visiting Estes Park–but as elk have been known to charge visitors who get too close, be careful to keep a safe distance (25 yards is the minimum distance recommended).

One of the most interesting (but also dangerous) times to observe the elk is during the rutting season , which generally starts in mid-September and lasts for about a month.

Visit the Estes Park Museum.

Dedicated to the history of Estes Park, this local museum features everything from a historic cabin dating to the early 20th century to oral histories detailing events in the region.

Take a scenic drive.

Estes Park is located right by some of the most stunning scenic drives in the USA, ranging from RMNP’s Trail Ridge Road to the ever-popular Peak to Peak Scenic Byway–the oldest scenic byway in Colorado!

Check out Enos Mills’ cabin.

One of the most unique things to do in Estes Park is to visit the beautiful 19th-century log cabin built in 1885 by Enos Mills, the “Father of Rocky Mountain National Park”.

Mills lived an extraordinary life, and his descendants maintain this small museum in his honor.

Visits are by appointment only, so plan ahead if you’d like to visit during your Estes Park vacation!

Pay a visit to the Stanley Hotel.

Looming tall over Estes Park, the gorgeous Stanley Hotel served as the inspiration for Stephen King’s The Shining . 

King was inspired to write the book based on his experience staying at The Stanley Hotel with his wife at the very end of the season when they were the only overnight guests in the hotel.

The hotel opened in 1909, catering to wealthy customers, and is still operational to this day.

We hadn’t ever read or seen The Shining before visiting Estes Park, so took the opportunity to watch the 1980 Stanley Kubrick movie while there–and it definitely made our experience visiting The Stanley more interesting (though it’s worth noting that the movie wasn’t filmed there).

Grabbing a drink at the historic Whiskey Bar is the perfect way to cap off a quick visit.

If you’d like to stay longer, consider signing up for a tour –the hotel offers both historical tours during the day and spooky, paranormal-centered tours at night.

Go whitewater rafting.

You can’t go whitewater rafting directly in Estes Park–but it does make for a fantastic day trip!

There are several whitewater rafting companies based in Estes Park that will take you to the Poudre or Colorado River for an exciting adventure on the water.

Take a walk along Lake Estes.

The peaceful, beautiful Lake Estes is within walking distance of downtown and is the perfect spot for a quiet morning stroll.

For those of us traveling to Estes Park with dogs, just across the road from Lake Estes is also where you’ll find the Estes Valley Dog Park, complete with water access for the pups!

… or paddle across it.

Prefer a bit more of an active visit?

Consider renting a canoe, kayak, or even a paddleboat to enjoy the lake instead.

Take the kids to Fun City for the afternoon.

Featuring family vacation classics like bumper boats and go-karts, along with more Colorado-themed fun like gem panning, Fun City makes an excellent place to spend an afternoon as a family.

Grab a slice or two at You Need Pie!

A guide to where to eat in town could easily be its own Estes Park blog post, however, You Need Pie! deserves a special mention.

This homegrown pie shop has been enchanting visitors since 2006 (it has moved locations within Estes Park since then), and their fruit pies remain some of my absolute favorite in the world.

Breakfast is served all day, and their diner food is tasty, but seriously–don’t miss the pie (I’m personally partial to the fruit pies).

In fact, if you’re renting a cabin or a place with a kitchen, do yourself a favor and pick up a full pie on your first day in town to eat once you get home from each of your hikes.

You won’t regret it!

Last but not least: visit Rocky Mountain National Park!

Of course, absolutely no list of things to see in Estes Park would be complete without mentioning the reason everyone comes in the first place: Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP)!

Known for its gorgeous lakes, great wildlife spotting opportunities, stunning mountain peaks, scenic drives, and of course legendary hikes, there’s a reason that Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the top five most-visited national parks in the country: it is both incredibly beautiful and has something for everyone.

Estes Park is about a 10-minute drive from the closest national park entrance, making it one of the best places to base yourself when heading to RMNP.

There is no shortage of places to stay in Estes Park, ranging from luxurious log cabins set right on the river to no-frills, comfortable lodges, and even includes the most famous haunted hotel in America (according to The Shining , anyway).

No matter what your taste in lodging, this classic Colorado mountain town has plenty of options for you.

Personally, we prefer to stay within walking distance of downtown when possible.

Given that there is limited parking downtown and that it’s so close to Rocky Mountain National Park, it’s the perfect choice for us–and each of the properties we recommend here is within walking distance of Estes Park’s center.

Discovery Lodge — We initially chose to stay at this property recently for one important reason: our dog, Ranger, was welcome!

We ended up loving it enough to re-book for a second visit, though: with an excellent location less than a 10-minute walk from downtown and perfect views of the many elk that liked to gather at the Estes Park Golf Course next door, it was a great retreat.

Rooms are spacious, and while basic, have clearly been updated in recent years and are very comfortable.

We’d be happy to continue returning here when traveling to Estes Park with Ranger.

The Stanley Hotel — For absolutely classic, luxurious accommodation with a perfect location and a side of ghost stories, you can’t beat The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park.

However, be sure to book carefully–with multiple buildings on the property, you’ll want to make sure the room you book is what you have in mind!

If you want to be in the main building, for example, don’t book in the (nearby and also lovely) Aspire Residences.

While central Estes Park is fairly walkable, and if you choose a hotel close to downtown you can likely walk to some meals and shops, you absolutely need your own car to effectively visit Estes Park and the surrounding area.

This beautiful mountain town is truly a year-round destination, but the best things to do in Estes Park vary dramatically based on when you visit!

We focused primarily on non-snow activities in this blog post about what to do in Estes Park, but winter also has its charms, including excellent wildlife watching, skiing, and the opportunity to go snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park!

Contrary to popular belief, though, winter isn’t when Estes Park experiences its biggest snowstorms: those are reserved for the spring, specifically March and April.

Spring also brings beautiful wildflowers and young wildlife, though–it’s a season when you need to be prepared for anything!

Summer is the most popular time to visit Estes Park and to take a Colorado road trip in general: beautiful weather, high prices, and big crowds are to be expected.

Fall is also a magnificent time to visit, bringing the changing colors of foliage, the mating season for wildlife (particularly elk), and often stunning weather.

Foliage in Rocky Mountain National Park tends to peak in late September, and some places in Rocky Mountain National Park like the Trail Ridge Road tend to close by mid-October.

Whenever you choose to visit, you’re bound to have a wonderful time as well as you are flexible with what to see in Estes Park.

I was up there in October of 2019. I h ave family that lives in Co. and I will say it was the best week I had. Estes Park was the best place to mark off my bucket list. Thank you aMr. Stanley for the hotel.

My niece is in the Denver area. We visit her every year. Going in November and will spend some nights is a cabin across from the visitor’s center. It’s pure heaven!!

Pure heaven is right. We’re actually in Estes Park on yet another return trip as I type this, soaking up every minute of that crisp mountain air!

You need to add Mustang Mountain Rollercoaster to this list. You’re missing out not trying this gem!

Located about 70 miles northwest of Denver and about 75 miles from the Denver International Airport, Estes Park, Colorado, sits at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park . And unless you brought your camping gear and booked a spot the year before, Estes Park is where you’ll want to stay. But Estes Park is more than just the closest town to the waterfalls, lakes and mountains of the nearby Rockies. Let’s explore.

You know I can’t write a guide to Estes Park without including the heart and soul of this part of Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park . Let’s start with the hiking trails. Whether you want to walk along quaint streams and rivers flowing through the pine tree forests or stand beneath the famous Bridal Veil Falls – hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park is easily at the top of what to do in Estes Park, Colorado. You can attend a ranger-led event or reserve a campsite (many months ahead of time) for a unique wilderness excursion. You might also try mountain biking or cross-country skiing. For the most outdoorsy travellers, pack your fishing gear and try your luck around the lakes and creeks. But if you aren’t up for an outdoor adventure involving long days and blistered feet, I’ve got you. The driving tour through the Rockies is sensational, and this guided audio tour can give you all the fun facts and historical tidbits to keep you entertained along the way.

Go Horseback Riding

When I think of the Rocky Mountains , it’s hard not to dream up visions of the wild west. Giddy up.

There are plenty of choices regarding where to rent a horse and set out for a ride, but trotting alongside Fall River to Horseshoe Park is a perfect two-hour excursion through Rocky Mountain National Park from Estes Park. 

You can also make a full day of it, as National Park Getaway Stables also features some longer rides for the more seasoned cowboys and cowgirls. Bring your best hat and some sun cream.

Want impressive views? Head a few miles outside of town and take Trail Ridge Road up to a viewpoint that rivals any in the world. When I took my Colorado road trip , Rainbow Curve was closed to cars, which meant we had an up-close look at the stunning beauty of the scenic route on foot. Eat Locally Sourced Food at Bird and Jim

One of the big advantages of choosing Estes Park for exploring the Rockies is the pick of surprisingly fantastic food spots. Don’t believe me? Though it’s a short drive from other things to do in downtown Estes Park, you’ll want to make the quick trek to the popular Bird and Jim . Using ingredients sourced locally (like hyper-locally), the dishes here for lunch and dinner are high in flavour but remain relatively healthy, so you can have a guilt-free meal no matter how many miles you hiked (or didn’t). Want something heartier? Not to worry, entrees like lamb bolognese with whipped mascarpone and the half-pound free-range bison burger with tomato-bacon jam will do the trick. While it might sound like a bit of a snoozefest, it’s really anything but. The self-guided tour will give you an idea about the rich history of the land and village. You’ll learn plenty about how Estes Park developed and survived over the years, and how it thrives today.

I’m sure visiting Lake Estes is a must on your ever-growing list, right? I don’t blame you – there’s plenty to do on this large reservoir, including kayaking, paddle boarding, or even fly fishing. But don’t set your sights on just one lake while visiting Estes Park. Rocky Mountain National Park is a short drive away and boasts stunning spots for the tranquil beauty of Emerald Lake, Gem Lake or the wildly popular Bear Lake.

Top tip: visit most of these in the summertime as they’re a bit too chilly and iced-over to appreciate during the coldest months. However, this hiking tour to Dream Lake is fun to do any time of year.

Explore the Fall River Region

What to see at Estes Park in the summertime? Two words: Fall River. 

Take a leisurely walk around the Riverwalk and sightsee near downtown. The views are pretty epic – think cosy wooden cabins and leafy forests. All set to the sound of a babbling river.

If you have some extra cash and are in the mood for a thrill ride, book an afternoon with Rocky Mountain Adventures . Regardless of your skill level or a knack for adventure, you’ll find a tour guide willing to show you a great time.

Go Sledding at Hidden Valley

If you’re from many parts of the world, sledding might be something you’ve seen in the movies. But come to Estes Park in the winter, and you’re in for a real treat.

Hidden Valley is an excellent sledding hill (and the only place you’re technically allowed to practise the sport in RMNP ).

Not to worry if you didn’t pack a toboggan. There are sled rentals in downtown Estes Park, so plan ahead if you want to try your hand at this exhilarating activity in the winter months.

Warm Up With a Beverage at The Barrel 

Now – I’m not sure about you – but after a day of hiking, I’m always in the mood for a bar with a neighbourhood feel and plenty of delicious grub. If you’re also in the mood to loosen up after a day exploring the Rockies, head over to The Barrel and plan on staying for a few hours. The beer garden has an impressive array of IPAs, stouts and small-batch sodas. But what really floored me was the wine selection. They had some real surprises for such an unassuming spot, including a Malbec I’ve rarely seen outside Argentina. Better yet, it has a welcoming atmosphere and is a great place to share a cocktail and chat with some locals while visiting Estes Park.

Snowshoe to Alberta Falls

Want an idea for things to do in Estes Park in the winter? Snowshoeing is an absolute must-try when you’re spending time around Estes Park.

Where’s the best place to do it? Glacier Gorge Trailhead is a fantastic trail that brings you to the iconic Alberta Falls.

Take this 5.3 km loop if conditions are safe, and your reward is an epic scene of frozen rapids that brings a unique beauty to this already incredible thing to do near Estes Park.  

Visit During Catch the Glow Parade

Travelling to Colorado during the holiday season adds a special charm you can’t get in many other places. From the snowy banks of the nearby mountains to the festive treats like a slice at the iconic Estes Park Pie Shop & Diner (You Need Pie! – oh yes, I do), there’s plenty to get you in the mood for the holidays when visiting Estes Park in the winter. And of all things to do at Estes Park, the Catch the Glow Parade is an annual classic. Over 40 festive floats make their way down the streets of Estes in this community event following the Thanksgiving holiday.

Head to Saint Catherine’s Chapel on the Rock

Looking something like a cathedral in the middle of the Alps, paying a visit to the beautiful Saint Catherine’s Chapel on the Rock is a must-do. 

The nearly 90-year-old Saint Catherine’s Chapel on the Rock is open from 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday through Sunday. The iconic structure built atop the rocky soil pairs perfectly with the stunning backdrop of the iconic Longs Peak. 

It’s a miracle it still stands after numerous natural disasters threatened it in the past, but a blessing from Pope John Paul II and a community dedicated to preserving this Colorado treasure have kept it standing strong. Swinging by is a wonderful free thing to do near Estes Park, but you’re welcome to donate cash if you wish.

Long time readers might just know about my affinity for stargazing. And, if you don’t mind heading outside when everyone else is getting ready for bed, capturing nighttime photos is one of the most stunning things to do in Estes.

Depending on where you plan to do this, it can involve a steep climb in your car that’s downright sketchy at certain times of the year. For example, roads may be closed, and you might need a permit to enter park areas at a designated time.

That said, if you plan accordingly, dress the part and know where you’re going, the reward of capturing the galaxy above is up there as one of the best winter photography destinations in the world.

For horror aficionados, Stanley Hotel means one thing: The Shining . Spoiler alert: it was the TV series rather than the original film that was shot here, but still…

Stop by this hotel to capture the beauty of the historic property sitting beneath the mountainous backdrop.

But if you want an adrenaline ride, take a tour (preferably at night) of the hotel and learn about the spooky history that inspired Stephen King’s masterpiece.

Visit One of Three Christmas Shops (Or All Three)

Christmas is kind of a thing here (ok, that’s an understatement), and one of the fun things to do in Estes Park is going shopping for some holiday souvenirs. Yes, even in May. And June. You get the point.

Longs Peak is no joke, and it’s one of the top things to do at Estes Park, Colorado, for the most adventurous of spirits .

For starters, this Rocky Mountain National Park hike has the highest summit in the area. Couple that with the 5,000+ feet of elevation change, and it’s a doozy. Start early in the day, during the summer, and pack plenty of water and snacks. If you don’t finish, you’re not alone. Over half the hikers attempt this turn around before reaching the fabled peak.

Things to do in Estes Park: Practical Tips for Your Trip

At a minimum, you’ll want to spend three nights in Estes Park. Why? Rocky Mountain National Park alone can take up all three days of your Colorado adventure. Have more time? Spend a week here to take advantage of all the fantastic things to do in Estes Park, Colorado.

If you ask me, December is the most romantic time to visit. It just doesn’t get any cosier than snuggling up by the fireplace or strapping on some ice skates and seeing why Estes Park is a Christmas destination like no other. That said, you’ll be head over heels for the waterfalls, river rafting, horseback riding and hiking in the summer.

Where Should I Stay in Estes Park?

For a totally rustic escape, head to The Evergreens on Fall River . When I took my first trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, nothing made me happier than enjoying the spa tub while resting up after challenging myself on the mountains.

While Estes Park is a town, it's also a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park , which is its central attraction. Visiting the Park requires special preparation.

One thing travelers should be sure to do is make sure they have their reservations taken care of before they arrive. Making reservations on arrival is difficult. Travelers will need a Timed Entry Permit and a parking pass or pay the entrance fee.

• Timed Entry Reservations are required from 9 am to 3 pm, however, if travelers plan to access Bear Lake Road, travelers will need a reservation between the hours of 5 am and 6 pm.

Travelers can make their Timed Entry Reservation online up until 5 pm the day before their trip. Travelers should also pay attention to parking within the park.

There are two large free parking lots downtown, but there is also a lot of paid parking.

Getting to Estes Park might be the easiest part of the trip, even if visitors are driving from Denver . Upon arrival, plan to get around with the help of taxis, shuttles, and more.

By Taxi, Uber & Lyft

Travelers will be able to take advantage of Uber and Lyft as ways to get into the park, but they are not readily available inside the park, especially for getting back to the airport.

There are traditional taxis available at the park still that will be better for park-to-airport transportation.

Travelers will want to strongly consider renting a car at the airport before driving into Estes Park. Having a car really simplifies the experience and with some of the park's best attractions requiring the use of a car, it is strongly recommended that travelers have a car during their trip.

By Estes Park Shuttle

The Estes Park Shuttle offers reliable, daily scheduled shuttle service to and from the Denver International Airport and Estes Valley Area. They are the only licensed and commissioned shuttle company to offer this service to travelers and residents visiting Estes Park.

The shuttle is a great alternative to taxis and renting a car for travelers looking to access Estes Park. It is approximately a two-hour drive into the park from the airport.

Estes Park Aerial Tramway

Travelers looking for a relaxing aerial adventure through Estes Park will want to try the Estes Park Aerial Tramway . Like many of the European tramways, that builder Robert Heron studied, the tram did not require multiple towers to support the tram along the way.

Tips for Your Estes Park Family Vacation

A family trip to Estes Park, Colorado is a  US bucket list destination  for many families.

With its charming downtown, easily-accessible hiking trails, and beautiful river views, the mountainous backdrop of Estes Park creates an atmosphere you can’t help but fall in love with.

In addition, there are literally dozens of awesome things to do in Estes Park with kids , as well as lots of extra things to do in Estes Park in winter !

As a base camp for amazing adventures in Rocky Mountain National Park, it’s important to understand the general layout of the area and to know what there is to do there  before  your arrival.

Though Estes Park is a popular tourist destination, knowing what to expect will make your family trip less stressful as well as ensure that you see and do all that is of interest to you.

Here are a few travel tips for your Estes Park family vacation that’ll help you prepare before you go.

1. Dress in layers.

Mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable, and vacationing in Estes Park is no exception.

Average temperatures in and around Estes Park vary significantly from season to season, as well as among its varying elevations.

No matter when you visit Estes Park – winter, summer, spring, or fall – we always suggest packing and dressing in layers.

During the coldest season from December to March, choose substantial layers like winter jackets, hats, and gloves in order to increase insulation and reduce heat loss.

Not only do temps hover in the mid-30 degrees Fahrenheit, but there are often high winds, ice, and snow as well.

During the warmer months of June through September, dress in light layers that offer protection from the sun and will guard you against the chill of the unpredictable mountain weather.

In the summer, temps range in the high 60s to high 70s, but mornings and evenings are still quite chilly.

2. Have your own vehicle or rent a car.

If you’re not traveling to Estes Park by means of your own personal vehicle, I recommend renting a car upon your arrival.

Though Downtown Estes Park is walkable, the city of Estes Park itself is quite spread out.

You definitely need a vehicle to get around during your Estes Park family vacation, as well as if you prefer the convenience of having your own vehicle to visit Rocky Mountain National Park.

If you’re opposed to renting a car, however, there are trains, buses, and taxis to Rocky Mountain National Park, as well as free park shuttles during the summer vacation season.

The Estes Park Visitor Shuttle, for instance, operates daily from late June through mid-September.

Ride-share cars such as Uber and Lyft do operate in the Estes Park area, but availability and number of drivers are limited.

3. Consider your parking options.

There is very limited street parking when visiting Downtown Estes Park and finding parking can be a hassle.

It’s important to familiarize yourself with the alternative free parking options, as well as the many lots in the heart of downtown where you can park for a fee. 

Free parking options include the Estes Park Events Complex lot (1125 Rooftop Way), which requires shuttling into downtown, or the Estes Park Parking Structure at the Estes Park Visitor Center (691 N. St. Vrain Ave.)

We recommend trying to find a spot at the Estes Park Parking Structure as it is conveniently located within walking distance of downtown.

4. Be sure to make reservations for Rocky Mountain National Park.

Gone are the days of a spontaneous visit to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Visitation to Rocky Mountain National Park has surged within the last decade and has led to severe crowding at many park destinations.

In order to control the crowd level and improve visitor experience, a vehicle reservation permit is required when visiting the park during the busy months of May through October.

Vehicle reservations are available in advance online at  Recreation.gov (Vehicle Reservations) , Recreation.gov app, or the Recreation.gov Call Center (Reservation Line: 877-444-6777) and require a $2 processing fee.

Once available, reservations sell out fast and are not available for purchase at the park. 

* Details for the 2023 summer season are not yet available but are expected to be released in January 2023.

In past years, a portion of the available vehicle reservations were released 120 days in advance of the effective date (i.e., vehicle reservations for July 1 are available on March 3).

The remaining vehicle reservations were released at 8 AM MDT the day before the effective date (i.e., remaining vehicle reservations for July 1 are available on June 30).

*In other words, mark your calendars and set a reminder alarm to book accordingly!

Also, note that vehicle reservations do not guarantee parking spaces in popular areas.

You should still expect congested and busy conditions throughout the park.

5. Check the operating hours of all attractions while planning your visit.

Many of the most popular attractions in Estes Park, Colorado close during the winter season.

Be sure to check the website for each of the attractions that you’re hoping to visit to be sure that you are visiting during the months they’re in operation.

Most seasonal attractions are open from mid-May to mid-September but always double-check as you’re doing your planning.

6. Always be prepared for wildlife sightings.

Estes Park, Colorado is surrounded by protected lands that offer natural habitat to hundreds of animal species.

With Rocky Mountain National Park on 3 three sides and the national forest on the fourth, you’re almost guaranteed to spot wildlife while driving through town.

For us, the most jaw-dropping sightings were seeing multiple elk (both babies and adults) walking through the city park, resting on the lawn by the local library, and walking down the middle of the road on the town’s main street, for instance.

During our 7 days in Estes Park, we saw elk on a daily occurrence . It was a beautiful thing!

Similar to elk, mule deer sightings are very prevalent in Estes Park as well as chipmunks, ground squirrels, and rabbits.

Other large animals in the area include moose, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, and bobcats.

No matter where you’re going or driving to, always good to be prepared for animal sightings and have your camera close by.

• The Ridgeline Hotel, Estes Park – Large indoor pool area and hot tub, onsite bar and restaurant, kids’ game room and movie screen, rustic-chic decor.
• YMCA of the Rockies – 9 lodges and 206 cabins, great for big groups, dozens of free onsite activities (i.e. roller skating, mini golf) plus extra activities for a fee (i.e. horseback riding, axe throwing).

Estes Park Family Vacation Itinerary

Here’s our suggested itinerary for spending up to one week in Estes Park with kids.

These day-to-day itinerary suggestions are based on our personal experiences and require a full day of exploring beginning at approximately 9 AM and going strong until the evening.

No two Estes Park family vacations will be the same, however, so use these itinerary suggestions as a guide.

You’ll need to adjust your itinerary as needed to account for the weather, where you stay, how much time you spend at each attraction, and the varying interests of your family members.

How many days do you need in Estes Park?

Ideally, I recommend spending 3 – 4 days exploring the town of Estes Park and 3 additional days in Rocky Mountain National Park – for a total of 7 days.

At a minimum, I suggest that you need at least 3 whole days to see the best of Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, especially if you’re traveling from a distance and want to make the most of your trip.

What’s the best time to visit Estes Park?

Though Estes Park is a year-round destination, the best times to visit Estes Park, Colorado are during the months of June through September.

During this time of year, highlights like Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park and other Estes Park tourist attractions are fully open. This is also when the weather is generally warm and pleasant.

Keep in mind that July and August are the most crowded months, so if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, plan on visiting in September through early May.

What airport do you fly into for Estes Park?

The closest airports to Estes Park are Denver International Airport (80 miles away) and Cheyenne Regional Airport (90 miles away).

Estes Park Itinerary 7 Days

Here’s how to spend up to 7 days in Estes Park, Colorado with kids.

The physical locations of the Estes Park attractions that are listed fit into the flow of this itinerary. If you choose to substitute a different attraction, be sure to adjust the timing of your itinerary accordingly.

Day 1 – Downtown Estes Park & Estes Park Aerial Tramway

• Go to the Estes Park Visitor Center
• Walk the Estes Park Riverwalk
• Browse the stores, boutiques, and taffy shops in Downtown Estes Park
• Have an old-time portrait taken
• Ride the Estes Park Aerial Tramway
• Spend time at the top of Prospect Mountain

Get an early morning parking spot in the free Estes Park Parking Structure and visit the adjacent Estes Park Visitor Center.

At the Visitor Center, pick up a free map of both Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park and ask any questions you have about the area.

From there, follow the well-marked signs to walk the Estes Park Riverwalk that follows Fall River throughout Downtown Estes Park.

Stop for coffee at Kind Coffee and visit the many shops located along the Riverwalk and Elkhorn Avenue (most of them open at 10 AM).

This is the best time of the day visit Downtown Estes Park because there are fewer people and it gets very hot during the afternoon hours of summer.

The can’t miss shops are The Taffy Shop, The Old Fashioned Candy Store, Brownfields (for quality t-shirts and sweatshirts), Rocket Fizz (for old-time candy and unique soda pop), The Spruce House year-round Christmas shop, and Water Wheel Gift Corner (fun clothing and souvenirs!).

Also, be sure to snap a photo of the historic Park ( movie ) Theatre.

Built in 1913, this is one of the most recognizable buildings in Downtown Estes Park and still shows both classics and new release films.

Estes Park Aerial Tramway

In the late afternoon, ride the Estes Park Aerial Tramway to the summit of Prospect Mountain.

Along with fantastic, panoramic views, there are hiking trails, a snack shop with gourmet coffee, and a gift shop with souvenirs at the top.

Though the tram is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM, it may close early if maximum capacity is reached.

This is an unforgettable Estes Park experience that should not be missed!

Day 2 – Lake Estes, Horseback Riding, & Mustang Mountain Coaster

• Walk Lake Estes Trail
• Rent a kayak or paddle board and enjoy Lake Estes
• Take a trail ride at Sombrero Stables
• Ride the Mustang Mountain Coaster
• Enjoy the Estes Park breweries

Spend the morning at Lake Estes located in the heart of Estes Park, Colorado.

Here, you’ll find a pleasant, multi-use, family-friendly trail called Lake Estes Trail, that offers great views of the valley.

This easy, 3.75-mile loop around Lake Estes takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete.

While there, consider renting kayaks, paddle boards, or even a pontoon boat from the onsite Lake Estes Marina.

Afterward, go on your pre-arranged 1 or 2-hour trail ride at the nearby Sombrero Stables.

Enjoy the beautiful rocky mountain landscape via horseback while admiring spectacular views of the Continental Divide, Long’s Peak, and the Estes Valley.

1 mile down the road from Sombrero Stables you’ll find the Estes Park Mustang Mountain Coaster!

Purchase a 3-ride pass ( 1 ride is never enough! ) to this unique alpine coaster and enjoy cruising down the mountainside at your own speed.

Finally, end the day by relaxing at one of Estes Park’s craft breweries – many of which have fun, locally-made sodas available for the kids.

Our personal favorite is Rocky Cut Brewing Company!

Day 3 and 4 – Rocky Mountain National Park

Estes Park is less than 5 miles from several different entrance points into Rocky Mountain National Park.

This close proximity makes it super convenient to visit the park for a short or long period of time each day.

I recommend spending at least 2 – 3 days visiting Rocky Mountain National Park during your Estes Park family vacation.

I also recommend reading about the best things to do in Rocky Mountain National park with kids so that you don’t miss any opportunities within the park that are specifically geared toward children.

While in the park, we spend most of our time at Bear Lake and enjoyed the sights and overlooks on Trail Ridge Road.

Our favorite easy hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park include Bear Lake Hike, Alberta Falls Trail, Lily Lake, and Alpine Ridge Trail for tweens and teens.

In addition, we loved spending time at both the Bear Meadows Visitor Center and Alpine Visitor Center.

Day 5 – All-Day Rafting Excursion

One of the best things to do in Estes Park, Colorado is to spend time on the Colorado River by way of a family-friendly rafting experience.

Though there are several options in the area, we loved our experience with Rapid River Transit on the Colorado River Full-Day Trip .

The experience begins in Estes Park early in the morning with a drive (via charter van) over the scenic Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park.

Upon arriving at the river launch site, life-jacket fitting and paddling lessons take place before starting the 12-mile scenic float down the Colorado River.

This trip offers a mild whitewater experience in class I, II, and sometimes class III rapids – suitable for first-time and experienced rafters.

You’ll be on the water for 4-5 hours and stop for a picnic lunch provided by the rafting company, followed by a chartered ride back to Estes Park.

(Our group consisted of family members ages 7 through 75, all of which who had never rafted before – and we all had a great time!)

Day 6 – Local hiking & FUN!

• Get a fresh-baked cinnamon roll from Cinnamon’s Bakery
• Hike Knoll Willows Open Space Trail
• Have a family fun day at one of the Estes Park amusement parks
• Go to the LazyB Chuckwagon Dinner Show

Start the morning off at Cinnamon’s Bakery – a popular must-do, fresh-baked cinnamon roll experience in Estes Park!

Visitors and locals start lining up 30 minutes before opening, as they sell out daily within a few hours.

When finished with breakfast, walk the easy 0.5-mile Knoll Willows Open Space Trail in Estes Park.

Populated with elk, you’ll also cross a small bridge, view a rustic cabin from the 1980s, as well as get views of the historic Stanley hotel.

Afterward, spend the afternoon at one or more of Estes Park’s family-friendly amusement centers.

Amusement parks in Estes Park include:

• Fun City – A giant rainbow slide, mini golf, bungee trampoline, bumper boats, go-karts, gemstone panning & more.
• Meadow Mini Golf – A traditional 19-hole miniature golf course
• Ride-A-Cart – Go-karts, bumper cars, bumper boats, miniature railroad, mini golf, batting cages & more.
• Open Air Adventure Park – A zipline aerial adventure park and axe throwing.

End this awesome, fun-filled day by attending the LazyB Chuckwagon Dinner Show .

This indoor dinner show features an authentic BBQ dinner served at 5:30 PM, followed by a Western Show featuring family-friendly humor and songs of the old west.

Day 7 – Stanley Hotel Tour & YMCA Day Pass

If you or your teens are into horror stories then you must visit the historic Stanley Hotel.  

This is the famous setting for Stephen King’s novel “The Shining”.  

Tours are available  for those ages eight and up and last 60 minutes.

Next, head to the  YMCA of the Rockies  for a fun-filled afternoon during your Estes Park family vacation.

If you are staying offsite, you can still enjoy the activities at the YMCA by purchasing a day pass.

Day passes for visitors not staying in YMCA lodging can be purchased for $29 for adults, $14 for children 6-12, and children 5 and under are free.

Activities include roller skating, mini golf, basketball courts, hiking trails, biking trails, disc golf, an indoor pool, and free family programs and films.

Other activities, that require registration and additional fees, include an escape room, indoor archery, axe throwing, an indoor climbing wall, arts & crafts, horseback riding, skiing, and sledding.

Advance registration is not available for day pass users but may be made the day of if there is availability.

Estes Park Itinerary 5 Days

If you have 5 days in Estes Park, I recommend enjoying days 1 – 5 as listed above, while also finding a morning to stop in for a Cinnamon’s Bakery cinnamon roll!

Estes Park Itinerary 3 Days

If you only have 3 days in Estes Park with kids, I recommend enjoying Downtown Estes Park, horseback riding, riding the Mustang Mountain Coaster, and spending 1 and a half days in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Estes Park Itinerary 1 Day

If you only have one day in Estes Park, Colorado, I recommend starting your day off with a walk around Lake Estes, taking a 30-minute trail ride via horseback, and then riding the Mustang Mountain Coaster.

Enjoy lunch and a short time browsing Downtown Estes Park before heading to Rocky Mountain National Park to hike Bear Lake Trail and travel Trail Ridge Road.

15 Things to do in Estes Park, Colorado [2023]

Estes Park is one of the most beautiful mountain towns I’ve ever visited.

In addition to the great scenery, there’s a lot of things to do, from enjoying the leisurely strolls along the scenic river walk to getting adventurous in the mountains.

In this article, I’ll break down some of the best things to do when in Estes Park based on our personal experiences.

R ocky Mountain National Park

For lots of people coming to Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park is the number one attraction . And there are a lot of ways to enjoy the park.

You will need to get familiar with the timed entry system and how it applies to the specific time you’re visiting.

We always just opt to enter the park before the timed entry system begins which means waking up really early but it’s always worth it even though it might be in the 30s (Fº) when you enter the park !

As far as hiking goes, there are endless hiking options and Rocky Mountain National Park is my #1 national park in the US in terms of bang for buck hiking .

Personally, I really like the Bear Lake Corridor even though it is often busy with other hikers and tourists.

If you’re down for something strenuous, consider the hike to Sky Pond which allows you to hit scramble up alongside a waterfall and see some stunning alpine lakes. Chasm Lake is another great strenuous hike. 

The hike to Dream Lake and Emerald Lake is more of the moderate category and still offers stunning scenery along the way but it can get quite crowded if you wait too long to begin.

If you just want something easy and team take a stroll around Bear Lake, which is right next to the parking area.

I also recommend looking into the Gem Lake Trail .

This trail is very close to Estes Park proper and gives you a good feel for the mountainous terrain surrounding Estes Park while offering you great views of the nearby peaks and Estes Park itself.

Something else you can do is just take a drive through the park, looking for wildlife. During our travels we spotted insane amounts of elk including some with some magnificent racks. We also found several moose, deer, and marmots.

Estes Park River Walk

The Estes Park Riverwalk is a paved path that runs through the heart of Downtown Estes Park, alongside the Big Thompson and Fall River.

Lots of tourists only see small parts of it when they visit but I would recommend you starting from the very beginning which is near the Estes Park Visitor Center, where you can also find free parking .

From there, you can make your way to Performance Park, covering approximately 1.1 miles one-way.

Along the way there’s a lot to check out. You’ll find outdoor instruments like chimes and xylophones as well as several art installations, monuments, and you may even encounter locals fly fishing.

My favorite part of the River Walk is just enjoying the beautiful forest scenery, with pines, fir trees, and quaking aspens lining the rushing river – it’s incredibly scenic.

Be sure to find a bench to hang out on for a while and enjoy the therapeutic sights and sounds of the river, which many people like to do with a hot cup of coffee or tea in hand.  

The Riverwalk takes you behind Elkhorn Avenue which is the main street home to a vast amount of shops, restaurants, and cafes.

If you’ve never been to Estes, you might be overwhelmed by the number of options with an ice cream or fudge shop seemingly every few feet, so be sure to check out our guide on the best places to eat .

When checking out the Riverwalk, I recommend also doing the pika statue scavenger hunt .

You’ll be looking for 12 pint-sized statues which are hidden in various spots and you can use clues to find them along with helping you gain some insight into the people who helped develop the region. Find all of them and you can unlock a special button from the visitor center.

Speaking of the visitor center, it’s a good idea to stop by to pick up maps, recommendations for restaurants and things to do, and the main guidebook which has coupons that can save you several bucks at different restaurants.

Lake Estes is a reservoir located in Estes Park, Colorado, that is a popular tourist destination due to its scenery, wildlife, and recreational opportunities. It encompasses 185 surface acres, boasts 5 miles of shoreline, and reaches a maximum depth of 45 feet.

Completed in 1948, Lake Estes was created as part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, (C-BT), which is a large-scale water diversion and storage project in Colorado developed to address water supply needs, irrigation demands, and hydroelectric power generation in the region.

One of my favorite things to do while in Estes was to take walks with our dog around the lake and just enjoy the scenery of the front range mountains including the iconic Longs Peak.

This is also a great place to encounter local wildlife. Prepare to be awestruck as you witness the majestic elk gracefully wandering around the lake’s shores, with a few daring individuals even taking refreshing swims in the cool waters.

And if luck is on your side, keep your eyes peeled for the extraordinary sight of bald eagles perched on the powerlines

A lot of people like to rent paddle boards, kayaks, and other small boats to enjoy the lake and you can rent these from the Lake Estes Marina .

You can also get a temporary fishing license along with bait at the marina as fishing is one of the most popular things to do in the lake.

Lots of the parking is found in the areas but if you want to secure free parking just had to Fisherman’s Nook , on the north side of the lake.

Also, as a bonus you should check out Mary’s Lake which is just a couple of minutes away from the heart of Estes Park. You’ll find smaller crowds there and there are some cool rocky outcroppings you can climb up to and enjoy the views.

Stanley Hotel

Built in 1909 by F.O. Stanley, this grand landmark was the inspiration for Stephen King’s spine-chilling novel, “The Shining.” After King stayed at the property for only one night, just before it closed down for winter, he reportedly had the entire haunting story created in his head.

The hotel has hosted famous personalities like Theodore Roosevelt and John Lennon and is also well known for its paranormal activity.

You can experience the hotel in a number of ways.

For one, you can just stay at the hotel and maybe even try to get into room 217, known for its supernatural activity.

Some people have only lasted a matter of hours in that room so you may not want to go into booking that without thinking things through first.

Or you can opt for a tour, such as a ghost tour, where you will explore the eerie corners and haunted rooms.

During our stay, we did the Shining Tour which dives deep into the origin of the story and also is effectively a ghost tour since you learn about some of the main hauntings in the property and get to walk down haunted hallways if you’re up for it.

The tour even allows you to catch a glimpse of the axe used in The Shining along with a haunting recreation of the bathroom from room 237 seen in the movie. I highly recommend it!

Historic Park Theatre

Built in 1913, the Historic Park Theatre in Estes Park is one of the oldest operating movie theaters in the country and a renowned cultural landmark nestled in the heart of the town.

In 1922, Ralph Gwynn assumed ownership of the theatre and built the landmark tower known as the “Tower of Love” as a tribute to the love of his life, but it’s not quite as sweet a gesture as you might imagine.

On the day they were meant to unite their lives, the love of Gwynn’s life vanished, leaving him standing alone at the altar. Perhaps seeking a twisted form of closure, Gwynn built the tower to represent the beautiful love of his life:  beautiful on the outside and hollow and empty on the inside.

If you are accustomed to the lavish amenities of fully equipped modern theaters, you’ll find that your viewing experience at the Historic Park Theatre in Estes Park offers a departure from those cookie-cutter multiplexes.

But it’s still a great place to embrace the vintage cinematic experience and it’s not so bad. While the seats are a bit stiff, you can find cushions in the back to help you get comfortable. And with your staple concessions items available, it’s not a bad way to catch a movie.

Make sure you go to the one of the rock shops in Estes Park before leaving.

I’d recommend taking a visit to the Red Rose Rock Shop which features all sorts of minerals, gemstones, and fossils.

Personally, I never really spent time in a rock shop before so I did not even realize that you could purchase fossils like the ones found in the shop so I thought that was extremely interesting. You’ll come across things like dinosaur bones, petrified wood, megalodon teeth, trilobites, and many more oddities.

It’s also a great place to find some beautiful gemstones and crystals that would make for great souvenirs which would be much better than the standard boring souvenirs you typically find a gift shop.

Out back, you’ll also find a pond and they give you food if you’d like to feed some of the ducks.

There’s another rock shop located in downtown that’s a little bit more of a premium gift shop where you might find jewelry.

Estes Park Museum

The Estes Park Museum is a free museum where you can explore the origins of the region. Learn about the key players in the development of the town and how it emerged as a tourism mecca.

One of the standout attractions within the museum is the impeccably maintained 1909 model EX Stanley Steamer Runabout, a truly remarkable vehicle with the impressive ability to reach speeds of up to sixty-five miles per hour.

Another must see is the historic cabin from the early 1900s, which you can go inside of. It’s a modest museum but still worth checking out for a little while.

Birch Ruins

The Birch Ruins are well-preserved remnants of a stone bungalow built in 1907 and owned by Albert ‘Al’ Birch, the editor of the Denver Post.

Starting in 1903, Birch spent his summers in Estes Park and after a few years, he developed a deep affection for the place and commissioned stonemason Carl Piltz to construct a small bungalow on this rocky outcropping, offering a scenic view of the town.

Unfortunately, in 1907, the bungalow was destroyed by fire, leaving behind only the stone ruins, which can still be explored today.

Admission is free to explore the ruins and only a short and easy hike is required to see them. This is a great way to experience a little bit of nature without having to venture away from the downtown area and the views are pretty impressive.

Peak to Peak Scenic Byway

Estes Park is located at the beginning (or end) of one of the most popular scenic highways in Colorado.

It’s known as the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway and it’s a great place to go for a scenic drive especially during the color change which would be in late September or early October.

In addition to some really great views along the way, you’ll be able stop and see the famous rock chapel, take a pit stop in Allenspark for one of the famous cinnamon rolls, and check out the historic carousel or dine inside a train car in Nederland.

There are plenty of side routes to ghost towns, beautiful hiking areas, and historical sites. Some of these require some advanced planning so be sure to check out the article linked above.  

You’ll finish up in the competing casino towns of Blackhawk and Central before heading back or you can continue on to Interstate 70 if you are heading to Denver or other nearby areas.

It’s a great drive because you can knock it out in about 1.5 hours one way, making it a very reasonable road trip to do.

Stanley Home Museum

The Stanley Home Museum is a new historic house museum in Estes Park, Colorado. Built in 1904 by Freelan Oscar (“F.O.”) Stanley and his wife Flora, it’s a fine example of Colonial Revival architecture and it was used by the Stanley’s as a summer home for decades.

Furnished with period pieces throughout the rooms, the museum takes you back to the early 1900s while allowing you to learn about the remarkable contributions this couple made to the Estes Park area.

As you get taken from room to room, more of the “Stanley story” will begin to come together.

You’ll realize just how far reaching F.O.’s impact was, be it through the iconic Stanley Hotel, the creation of tourism-enhancing roads, the establishment of a power plant that illuminated the town, or even his role in the formation of Rocky Mountain National Park.

It’s pretty inspiring to hear about all of the accomplishments. If you have an interest in history, entrepreneurship, or antiques, this tour will be right up your alley.

Historic Power Plant

The Historic Fall River Hydroplant is a former hydroelectric power plant located in Estes Park, Colorado. It was built in 1909 by F.O. Stanley to provide electricity for the Stanley Hotel and ultimately the town of Estes Park.

The plant was damaged in the Lawn Lake Flood of 1982, but was restored and is now open to the public as a museum. It’s a great place to learn about the history of hydroelectric power and the development of Estes Park.

You’ll get a good overview of FL Stanley and get taken through the plant to get it up close look at the turbines and generators used.

For people with a mechanical or engineering background, they will probably love all of the technical inside all over your average person like myself you might get a little bit lost.

Still, it’s interesting to come away with some tidbits of information and two also learn about the catastrophic flood of 1982 and the impact that it had on the community.

The plant is open from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from June through September. The guided tours are offered at 1 PM, 2 PM, and 3 PM and usually last about 45 minutes to an hour.

Here’s your inside tip, though: you don’t necessarily have to arrive right at the beginning of the hour to jump on a tour. We arrived about 20 minutes prior to 3 PM and the volunteers were able to get us started on our own personal tour which was extremely nice of them.

The other great thing about this attraction is that it is  100% free  but you can always consider making a donation.

Farmer’s Market

The Estes Park Farmers Market is a weekly event where local farmers and vendors sell fresh produce, baked goods, and other Colorado-made products. It typically begins at the beginning of June and will run until the end of September.

It takes place every Thursday and runs from 8 AM to 1 PM, which is great because it allows the market to remain open for a few hours before those summer thunderstorms roll into the mountains.

We visited this market and really enjoyed engaging with all of the different friendly vendors and supporting the different small businesses.

We walked away with some delicious handcrafted chocolate peanut butter cups in addition to honey infused with whiskey barrel flavor. But you can find everything from tamales to bison sausage here.

I recommend heading here for breakfast as you won’t be disappointed by some of the pastry options.

Estes Park Memorial Observatory

The Estes Park Memorial Observatory is another free activity that’s great for anyone interested in exploring the night sky. It’s home to a 16-inch telescope capable of giving you great views of galaxies, nebulas, and brilliant star clusters.

You’ll need to contact them and request a booking in advance and then hope for clear skies.

Unfortunately for us, the skies did not open up so we are observing night was canceled but I’m hoping to return at some point to do some observing.

If you’re looking for something somewhat bizarre to see check out the “Estes Ark” which is a scaled down version of Noah’s ark.

The ark is filled with thousands of stuffed animals that come in all different varieties along with lots of antiques. It’s one of the stranger things to come across but perfect for those with a love of stuffed animals or a fascination with Noah’s Ark.

Other activities you can enjoy

In addition to hiking, if you want to get out and be active there are a lot of activities you can book like white water rafting, high ropes courses, fly fishing.

You’ll also find a couple of places around town to enjoy things like go karts and miniature golf.

You can head to the visitor center to pick up information on the different vendors available or sometimes you can find their headquarters located along the Riverwalk or Elkhorn Avenue.

There’s obviously a lot that you can do in Estes Park and the good news is that there are quite a few free things you can do. If you enjoy spending time in nature, you will no doubt enjoy your time in Estes Park!

The Professional Touch

Participating in a tour of Estes Park and  Rocky Mountain National Park  makes sense for a few reasons: 1) you get acquainted with the lay of the land; 2) you learn interesting facts about the area; and 3) you get a supervised opportunity to try something new. In short, tours provide a great way to learn where to go and what to do before setting off on your own.

Besides, it’s fun and educational to follow local guides to their favorite spots, whether they're leading you on a  wildlife photography tour  or taking you  fly fishing . Join  hiking  or birding tours inside the national park. Maybe even try an inn-to-inn trek.  Drive up Trail Ridge Road  in a van or motorcoach as on-board guides explain the various ecosystems, pointing out notable plants and wildlife along the way. Tour Roosevelt National Forest via  horseback  or from the saddle of an  ATV . Whatever your interest, you’re sure to learn something new and have a good time when you book an Estes Park tour!
