Have you always wanted to look at the ocean wonders deep beneath the water's surface around the Big Island? If so, it’s time to experience the magic of snorkeling with Fair Wind Cruises. Their tours will take you from the Kealakekua Bay to the Kona Coast, treating you to the sights of dolphins, manta rays, and so much more.

Fair Wind Cruises launches from Kona daily on their mission to show all their guests the most beautiful sights around the Big Island. Available morning, afternoon, and night, their tours take you on explorations along Kealakekua Bay, the Kona Coast, and beyond. All along the way, you’ll get to check out sea life of all kinds, including colorful tropical fish, dolphins, and monk seals. On top of that, if you choose the manta ray tour, you’ll get to swim alongside those phenomenal creatures at your leisure.

In order to check their island snorkeling experiences off your bucket list, you’ll need to book your spot ASAP. They often stay booked solid for weeks in advance, after all. So, make sure to reserve your tour as soon as you know you’ll be on the island. Fortunately, making reservations is as easy as pie through the online system on their website. Just scroll to your tour destination, select your preferred date, and indicate how many people will be in your group.

Once you’re all signed up, you just have to show up at the dock at the given time and date. Remember to wear your swimwear because there’s nowhere to change on the boat. Also, bring your own towel, sunscreen, and sunhat. UV protection sunglasses are definitely a great idea as well. Upon boarding the boat, the captain will let you know what to expect and then set off toward your destination.

Depending on your tour of choice, you’ll get to ride on their 60-foot custom-built catamaran, the Fair Wind II, or the 55-foot catamaran, the Hula Kai. Both boats offer comfortable seating with shade covers all around, plus have enough power to get through rough waves. The Fair Wind II kicks it up a notch with waterslides and a high-jump platform, while the Hula Kai comes with theater-style seating.

As you jet to your destination, take the time to enjoy the views and snack on whatever food and drinks they roll out. Then, you’ll have a chance to don their gear and snorkel through the crystal-clear waters in search of wondrous sights. More food and drinks will come your way after that, followed by even more fun in the sun. It really doesn’t get better than that.

Their most popular tours include:

Kealakekua Bay Available in the mornings and afternoons, the Kealakekua Bay Snorkel Tour takes you on a 3.5- to 4.5-hour trip, starting at Keauhou Bay. During your travels, you’ll get to hear about the island’s history, see the Captain Cook Monument, and snorkel your heart out. Island-style cuisine will come your way all day long, too, along with tasty drinks from the bar.

Kona Coast The Kona Coast Snorkel Tour lets you explore two exciting snorkeling spots filled with beautiful marine creatures. Depending on the conditions, you’ll get to snorkel around Pali Kaholo, Red Hill, or other popular spots plus use their stand-up paddleboards. A tropical breakfast, island-style lunch, and full bar complete the five-hour experience just right.

Manta Ray On the Manta Ray Night Snorkel Tour, you’ll get a chance to spend over an hour swimming alongside gorgeous manta rays. You’ll first take a short jaunt by boat to the Manta Village, and then get into the water to see the rays gobble up plankton near the vessel’s lights. Although they don’t serve food on this trip, the full cash bar will open up after snorkeling.

Would you like to go on a tour all your own? Or perhaps you have a special occasion coming up? If so, definitely ask about their private charters. Depending on your tour of choice, you can bring up to 100 of your friends and family along for the ride. You just need to select your tour type and share anything that would make your trip truly special. The crew will then get to work in creating an excursion to remember.

Insider Tips: -For a full refund, always provide at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations. -Want a chance to see whales? Schedule at least one tour between December and April. -Leave all your valuables in your hotel safe. There’s nowhere to stash your items on the boat. -Bring cash, so you can buy drinks at the full bar and tip the crew at the end of your trip.

Snorkel Crystal Clear Waters of Kealakekua Bay!

  • Fair Wind Snorkeling

Image

  • Most popular snorkel trip along the Kona coast
  • Fun boat with two waterslides
  • Snorkel at Captain Cook Monument
  • Incredibly clear water and lots of yellow tangs!

Description

Snorkel at historic Kealakekua Bay, a site known for incredibly clear water, frolicking spinner dolphins and healthy coral reefs teeming with colorful fish. The Fair Wind II has an exclusive mooring at this beautiful historical bay, where you snorkel within sight of the Captain Cook Monument. Kealakekua Bay was the scene of the first European landing on the island of Hawaii in 1787. Captain Cook died here a few months later at the hands of the natives during an unfortunate skirmish over a dinghy.

The wide steps on each side of the boat provide easy access into the ocean. The water is so clear here that the reef makes the ocean look like you are swimming in a sea of gemstones. How's this for uncrowded snorkeling??? The reef here is very healthy, the water is very clear and there are lots and lots of fish.

Morning departures are at 9am from Keauhou Harbor, about 10 minutes south of downtown Kailua-Kona. The trip includes breakfast, lunch and snorkel gear. The tour is 4.5 hours long. A cash bar is also available on-board. The vessel has recently switched to a plant-based vegan menu for both breakfast and lunch.

The waterslide on this boat is a lot of fun! It's a LONG one too … longest I've seen on a snorkel boat. It starts at the upper deck, runs to the bottom of the lower deck, and then drops you to the ocean. If you are really in a hurry, there is also a high jumping / diving platform on the upper deck!

My wife and I snorkel a lot … and it takes a lot to impress us. We have owned our own sailing catamaran, so we are used to going to places that aren't crowded and where the snorkeling is excellent. Whenever we go out on snorkel tours on the Big Island we are treated to conditions that we are able to find on our own boat – great reefs and uncrowded snorkeling.

The Fair Wind is an excellent trip. If you have never been to the Big Island before, I would say that my first choice would be to go out on the Fair Wind so you can snorkel beautiful Kealakekua Bay. If you've been there and done that before, then a trip on the Hula Kai is a must! You'll see far more of the Kona Coast than you ever imagined!

For those who want to go out on the Fair Wind II but you absolutely cannot go in the morning because of a convention or other commitment, or if your dates are already sold out for the morning trips, they also operate a slightly scaled back and slightly less expensive afternoon trip at 2pm. The destination is the same and the snorkel time is ALMOST the same. Lunch is not served, which accounts in part for the shorter tour time.

If you are a cruise ship passenger and your boat arrives in port at 7am, it is cutting it too close to make it for checkin for the Fair Wind, but you have ample time to make the check-in for the Hula Kai which leaves at 9:30am and this is the tour that we recommend for you. For our clients staying in the Waikoloa area, including the Hilton, Marriott, Fairmont Orchid, Hapuna Prince, etc, the Waikoloa Snorkel Sail is an excellent choice. Since this tour departs from the Waikoloa area it saves you the 40-minute drive into Kona town and it will take you to snorkel destinations that are difficult to access from the shore.

FAIR WIND CRUISES

BIG ISLAND OCEAN GUIDES

Fair Wind Cruises

Fair Wind Cruises offers the best snorkeling cruise on Hawaii, The Big Island. Hawaii has some of the finest snorkel and diving locations in the world. In fact, more than a quarter of the marine life in Hawaii cannot be found anywhere else on earth. We hope you will enjoy a Fair Wind experience during your time on the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii.

FAIR WIND CRUISES CERTIFICATION HIGHLIGHTS

Great job using the supplementary pages to fully describe your various sustainable practices. It made completing the certification very easy to justify.

The use of biodiesel for your vessels is highly impressive. I’m sure many other sustainable tour operators would like to find out more information about how you implemented this practice.

Loved the use of local food, including beef and kona coffee (grown on your farm). Very sustainable to take the food waste from tours and using it as in input for your farm. I also appreciate how you mention these practices on your website so guests can see why your company stands out compared to others. You could look to source more of your continental breakfast locally, as it seemed that most items came from Costco.

fair wind cruises Fair Wind Kealakekua

Shows a commitment to protecting natural resources by searching out Dolphin SMART recognition, despite it not being offered in the Kona region. It is good that you have decided to implement those policies nonetheless.

Loved how the walls were covered in information about the various aquatic life available and the availability of educational materials in the galley.

Great job responding to negative comments on TripAdvisor. Shows a commitment to addressing guests’ needs.

Great website and marketing materials, with lots of information about the tour, what to expect, what is and is not included. Information about your sustainable practices and marine viewing.

We drove to the dock. Parking is small so get there early or you will need to park up the hill in a large area.

Is there a weight limit for the manta ray night snorkel? Also, is there an option for an adult to go on the excursion and not leave the boat?

Afternoon Snorkel A super fun trip for all! There are so many options for this type of activity in Kona but I'm so glad we went with Fair Winds. We have tried other big boats but the glove didn't quite fit. The bay provides the real stars, and this particular crew makes sure you enjoy every bit of it. Their knowledge of the bay and apparent love for the island comes through. If you are comfortable in the water this a super fun group to book. The diving board, and slides were a hit. One of the crew mates is particularly engaging w teens and all young kids. My group has strong, experienced swimmers who've snorkeled before but I injured my back a year ago, my teen son had surgery a month ago, and our youngest is 8. I booked this boat based on the stairs alone. I had zero issue getting in and out. People of all ages were in and out. They have every tool available for ALL ages to enjoy the water. They are super helpful. Kids will be hungry so plan accordingly. We were served fresh pineapple and homemade veggie chips. Delicious and light. Perfect for many, but not all. We cannot say enough good things about this team and the boat. We interacted w almost everyone and they were all fantastic. Special thanks to our fellow CO peeps. We were super impressed w their work ethic, team work, and disinfecting process. Captain Tim runs a tight ship. Well done!

We just got home from the night manta ray snorkel trip. This organization is top notch. The crew is super friendly, the registration process was beyond easy, the food onboard was amazing (we had black bean soup), and the experience was perfect. We are going back on Friday for the snorkel trip!

Photo of Allison G.

We are repeat customers. This trip will be the 5th time we've gone on the morning snorkel tour and we have also booked the manta Ray tour this trip. It's a must-do when we visit the Big Island and I have recommended it over and over again as a DO NOT SKIP. The staff is always professional and knowledgeable. I feel very safe while snorkeling. Their equipment is good. The boat is a blast. The morning snorkel is family friendly in every way. My only complaint this time is the food. If you're going to push the vegan thing, you need to add more options. Most people on the boat were skipping the food - the lunch especially. And EVERYONE with kids had brought a lot of snacks. Providing peanut butter & jam sandwiches for the kids (and adults who don't want jackfruit or chickpea sandwiches) would be easy and go a long way to serving the promised meal that everyone paid a lot of money for. I'm writing this review from L&L where we stopped for lunch immediately after getting off the boat. If you book an excursion that provides a meal, you would be wise to add options that more people will enjoy.....

Photo of Cathie S.

We had a great time and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Snorkeling at Captain Cooks Monument is always excellent with every fish you can imagine!

Photo of Byron B.

Hard between 4-5 star I could type a book but Will try and make it easy to help fellow helpers decide if this is the right cruise for you Pros / super professional, helpful , good vibes all around. The boat was nice and had slides and high dive to enjoy. The crew was friendly with my little kids as much myself. I really think they made it a great trip Cons/ I needed some real protein during the trip and the vegan only options didn't go over well with myself or kids. I would bring some snacks. I also wish when I called the lady told me to bring my own snorkel gear since it is good stuff. They cater to the beginner and for people that have good gear that fits - I would bring it Lastly is the price - it is expensive but again paying for great help and customer service. They do give a AAA and or veteran discount but u have to call. They should make this more obvious

This company is absolutely fantastic! Snorkel tours always run smooth and the staff are so helpful and attentive. Be prepared and and arrive early so you can park your car (street parking only) before your check-in time. My first snorkel tour with fair wind was 20 years ago. I have done 4 more tours since then and 3 of those tours were on my most recent trip to Kona. They just do not disappoint so I keep coming back. The Morning Kealakekua Snorkel Tour is incredible. This tour includes vegan overnight oats and fresh fruit for breakfast, 2 1/2 hours of snorkel time, and a light vegan lunch. One of the most epic things about this tour is the boat has 2 water slides as well as 2 high dives. The tour is a total of 4 1/2 hours and it is worth every penny. The afternoon snorkel is epic! There are fewer boats, and they offer vegan chips and fresh pineapple after, which is just what you need after being in the water for an 1 1/2! We also did the night manta ray snorkel. Unfortunately, the mantas had some stage fright the night we went, but we felt completely safe with Fair Wind. They provide wetsuits, floating noodles (to keep you level so the mantas can get closer!), and then when you are done, hot chocolate/tea and hot chili (vegan, but oh so delicious). Since we didn't get to see the mantas, Fair Wind gave us the option to reschedule, or join them the following day on their afternoon tour (if there was availability). We had already booked the afternoon tour for the following day and I was able to get a refund for the tour booked. Fair Wind truly goes above and beyond in every aspect on all of their tours. We keep coming back because of the professionalism, friendliness and don't forget the fabulous views, unbelievable photo ops and endless memories. Looking forward to my next snorkel adventure with Fair Wind! PROS: * snorkel masks and fins provided (you can bring your own if you want) * mask defogger (don't forget this!) * friendly, knowledgeable staff * shade on the boats * plant-based breakfast & lunch provided in the morning snorkel tour (it is fresh and delicious!) * vegan chips and fresh pineapple provided on the afternoon tour * hot beverages and vegan hot soup or chili provided on the manga ray tour * bathrooms on all vessels * 2 water slides on the Fair Wind II vessel CONS: * none!

I cannot say enough amazing things about this experience & this crew. We booked via Viator for a day snorkeling adventure in captain cook Bay Area (can't spell the Hawaiian name lol). The staff was so friendly and chill. Other than going over some safety tips, they would super hands off and let us enough the day. The food was so good and I appreciated their dedication to reduce their footprint and protect the sea by providing mineral based sun screen & composting leftovers. So thankful we found them - look no further and book them!!

I was staying in Waikoloa village and was trying to find a good snorkel tour. We didn't rent a car because we weren't staying very long- and it was difficult to find a good snorkel tour that didn't require you to drive and or use your own car for transport to the beach with gear. We were recommended this tour by our Uber driver after having to cancel a different tour that made you transport your own kayak and gear down to the bay. THIS WAS SO WORTH IT! We got great breakfast on the boat as well a lunch.they provided all gear as well as kept us safe during the whole trip. After the story about that couple that was left behind on a snorkel tour on Maui- I was worried about being left out at sea lol. They do a check in process verifying names when you're done swimming. You get a beautiful tour of the bar and they stop and look for marine life as well. You do get to enjoy alcoholic beverages after the swim witch was great. Crew was very knowledgeable, friendly and great to spend the day with. For the price food, water and sunscreen provided this tour is absolutely a steal for the price. Do not hesitate to book!

Wonderful morning snorkle cruise on Hula Kai. Captain Chris and Crew were amazing. We saw tons of whales and beautiful fish. Plant based Breakfast and Lunch were served and so yummy! Our Captain shared fun historical facts about the island. Snorkeling in Guana Cove and Captain Cooks Cove was spectacular. Highly recommended. Boat was equipped with everything you needed to make this cruise fantastic!!!

Photo of Tiffany T.

When our other tour cancelled last minute due to a maintenance issue, we were thrilled to find room for our big group in this catamaran. We enjoyed a quick ride to Capt Cook monument and the surrounding bay for some beautiful snorkeling. The lunch (plant based) blew all of us meat-loving people away! My husband did not know he wasn't eating pulled pork! The gear, slides, and crew were amazing.

Fair  Wind Kealakeakua Bay Snorkel

The deluxe 4-1/2 hour lunch cruise departs Keauhou Harbor with a tropical breakfast and 2-1/2 hours of snorkeling. Then it’s BBQ on-board and a no host bar. This is the only boat permitted to moor at Kealakekua, so the reef is less abused than a troubled teen from Hollywood High. The reef is prolific with my, SB’s, little bitty fish buddies, who are sure to be your friends too, given 1/2 a chance. The 60’ cat has EZ water access, fresh water showers, a 15-foot water slide, a high-dive platform and ample shade. Snuba avail. for additional $71.88 paid direct on-board boat.

*CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS: Kealakekua AM trips require a minimum 24 hour advance booking: disembarkment & transport is too late for 9AM trip departure from Keauhou Harbor. Call Snorkel Bob’s Kona stores for advance reservations between 8AM-5PM Hawaii time the day before. Ask about afternoon trip options if AM Captain Cook’s is unavailable: (808)329-0770 or (808)885-9499.

*72 hr. cancellation policy for groups of 10 pax or more

TIME : 9-1 PM Tues., Thurs. & Sat., with 8 :30 AM check-in

INCLUDES : Mueslix, banana bread, fruit bowl, Kona coffee, herb tea and fresh-squeezed lemonade. BBQ lunch is jackfruit sliders with coleslaw on a bun (veggie), pbj's for kids, chickpea salad with minced celery & onions, green salad, ulu (breadfruit)-sweet potato salad an cookies. No-host bar.

DEPARTS: Keauhou Bay, Main Dock

Overall rating

The crew was great, the manta turn out was amazing, and the boat ride is short (which is ideal for when you’re cold and ready to get warm again haha). We got lucky that it was a small group so there were plenty of option ... s to sit and have a lovely view of the sunset while heading out. 10/10 would do again.

It was a once in a lifetime experience. The manta rays came right up to us and almost brushed up on us. It was so beautiful as well as seeing all the glowing plankton and other fish. the staff on the boat were friendly a ... nd informative. at the end they gave us hot chocolate and soup to warm us up. definitely recommend this company.

Manta Rays! In YOUR FACE!

This is a great outfit to take you to see Manta Rays. The boat is a medium size so the group size is much smaller than the big boats. Crew are very professional and knowledgeable in the Manta Ray habits and behaviors. Th ... e boat ride to the site is short (<15 min) then it's into the water. On our trip a single manta showed up after about 5 minutes in the water. As the sky darkened the plankton seemed to multiply and the show really began. The single ray made several passes within inches of our masks. Then another showed up and it was like a graceful dance being performed right beneath you. Another two rays showed up and things really got interesting. What fun watching that ballet! Afterward, hot soup and warm drinks helped fuel the conversation with the other participants. A most delightful and memorable experience. P. Burke

Change policy, is there a safe place to store my belongings while on tour.

The only type of storage available is the space around your seating area. There will always be one crew member on board at all times, so it is advised that you keep your belongings with you rather then leaving them in your car.

Can we get back on the boat at any time if the water gets cold?

Yes, absolutely.

How is the underwater visibility?

Visibility is great. The Manta Rays will sometimes be within inches of you and the water is only 20~30 feet in depth, so visibility is normally quite clear.

Will wet suits be provided?

Yes, wet suits will be provided.

What kind of boat will be used?

Built in 2005, it is a new 55' Teknicraft Catamaran which has been designed and built to accommodate guests who seek the very best in luxury, comfort and technology. The new vessel seats 42 passengers. It is equipped with two stairways for easy access in and out of the water, full bar & galley, two restrooms and fresh water showers.
