Laurel Thoreson Obituary
Laurel Leroy Thoreson was called home to the Lord on Wednesday December 2, 2020. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Laurel was born to Neal and Myrtie Thoreson on July 24, 1934 in Hetland, SD. He was the third oldest son of nine children. He graduated from Flandreau High School in 1952, he joined the Army and served his country stationed in Turkey.
He worked in Minneapolis, MN where he met his wife, Betty Nelson, of 58 years and their children Andy and Karin were born. They moved to Betty’s home town of Osnabrock, ND where he taught school for 1 year and obtained his Master’s in Guidance Counseling at UND. He was a guidance counselor in Remer, MN for 2 years where daughter Kirstin joined the family. In 1968 they moved to West Fargo. He was a guidance counselor for West Fargo High School until his retirement. Laurel dedicated his life to helping others. He served in the ND House of Representatives for 8 years after retirement.
Laurel was a member of Faith Lutheran Church for 52 years. He was also a dedicated coffee crew member at Sandy’s doughnuts.
Laurel felt blessed with family and friends. He enjoyed his time spent camping, building his cabin in Minnesota and the many hunting and fishing trips he took with his brothers, son, nephews and friends. He later enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow. He spent many hours watching shooting sports, hockey, basketball, football and cheerleading. He taught them to fish and fix things. Grandpa was always just a phone call away ready to give advice.
Laurel is survived by his loving wife, Betty, son Andy (Janet), and daughters Karin (Kyle) and Kirstin (AJ). His grandchildren Kelsey, Austin, Warren, Landen, Talon (Samantha) and Shad. Brothers David (Kathy) and Gary(Lucie), sisters Nyla and Arlys (Denny) and sister in laws Beverly, Anne, Amy (Arlan) and Brother in law Paul (JoAnne) and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, in laws Einar and Lilly, brothers Dwayne (Del), Marlyn, Roger, and Ron (Marilyn), Sister in law Clara (Kenny), brother in law Buell, nephews Paul, Doug, Jay and nieces Diana and Dawn.
The family would like to thank Sanford Hospice House for the care of our loved one.
Visitation : Thursday, December 10, 2020 from 5 to 7 PM at the West Funeral Home, West Fargo.
Funeral : A private family service will be held at Faith Journey Lutheran Church in West Fargo
Burial : Fargo National Cemetery, Harwood, ND.
