Whether you played Diamond and Pearl back when they first came out or you’re just experiencing the Sinnoh region through remakes, you may be struggling to get around the updated game. We’ve put together this article to teach you how to get fly in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Fly in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Back in the original gen IV games, HMs were still moves that you had to teach your pokemon if you wanted to use them outside of battle. The Hidden Move Fly allows you to fast travel to any major previously visited locations, but it works differently in the newer games than it has in the past.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were largely criticized by the fan base, but there are some useful changes they made. You see, in these remakes, Fly is no longer a move you need to teach your pokemon.

Sure, you can still teach your pokemon the move Fly, but you don’t need to in order to fast travel. All you have to do is open up your map, select a location to fly to, and Fly. It’s just that easy.

How to Get Fly in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

We should start by clarifying once again that there is a difference between the HM Fly and the TM fly. Both can be found in Veilstone City but one is an app for your Poketch and the other is a move you can teach your pokemon.

To get the HM Fly, you’ll need to defeat Maylene, the third gym leader in the Sinnoh region. After defeating Maylene, she’ll give you a whole congratulatory spiel and then inform you that you can now use the hidden move Fly.

maylene

Interestingly, you do still need to retrieve the TM Fly (TM 95) as well. For that, you’ll need to help Dawn take down a few Team Galactic grunts and retrieve her Pokedex.

After that, you can head inside the Team Galactic warehouse in Veilstone City and pick up the Pokeball on the ground to the right.

Once you’ve obtained the TM you can use the HM to instantly return to anywhere you’ve been. Whether or not you teach the TM to your pokemon is up to you since, once again, the HM doesn’t require you to teach Fly to a flying type pokemon.

fly in hidden moves app

How to Use Fly in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl

Once you’ve defeated Maylene and grabbed the TM 95 from the Team Galactic warehouse, you can start flying all over the Sinnoh Region. While you can use your poketch, there is a much easier option:

  • Open your Town Map.
  • Hover over a destination you’ve been to before.
  • Press A to fly there.

This eliminates the need to press the R button and open up the poketch, toggle through the various apps, and then select Fly. Since all of that would have the same effect as getting you to your Town Map, it just makes sense to skip a few steps along the way.

Final Thoughts

Fly has always been the perfect solution for fast traveling in the Pokemon games. Having a flying-type move that doubles as a way to traverse the overworld is awesome.

Of course, not everyone wants their pokemon to learn hidden moves in place of moves that could be more powerful. We the slow removal of hidden moves in the Nintendo Switch games, we’ve gotten to a point where you can use any team you want and not be pinned down to a set composition.

So, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl might not be the best games in the series, but at least you can fly around to your heart’s content without ever needing to teach the hidden move Fly to your pokemon.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Hidden Moves: How to get & use Fly, Rock Climb, Surf, Strength, and more

A classic part of the Pokemon pantheon are HMs, or Hidden Moves . These special abilities aren't just skills for Pokemon to use in battle, but are also key to progression in the game. Usable outside of battle, HMs such as Cut, Fly, and Rock Smash open up new areas of Sinnoh and in turn allow you to progress deeper into the region and storyline of the Pokemon title in question.

In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl , HMs return once again - but with one major difference. This time, you don't need to teach a Pokemon the move in question in order to use it in the overworld. This frees up Pokemon move lists to be populated with stuff you'll actually use, rather than having a 'HM Slave' creature overloaded with not-so-hot combat moves that are really just used to get around the world map.

Pokemon Diamond & Pearl HM Hidden Moves for the Poketch

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl features eight moves that were once HMs - but now they're regular TM moves that can also be used outside of battle once you fulfil certain conditions:

In order to use each special Hidden Move, you'll need to both acquire the associated TM and also complete a specific Gym; each of the game's Gyms unlocks use of one of these skills on the outside of battle, which helps to gate your progression directly to your Gym progress. You can view out Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Gym leader guide for more on beating each of the gyms.

Once unlocked, usage of HMs is managed via the Poketch gadget; all you have to do is execute the move in the right place to successfully use it.

pokemon_brilliant_diamond_shining_pearl_rock_smash.jpg

Rock Smash - breaking boulders

Rock Smash does exactly what the name suggests - it allows you to blast rocks to pieces to open up some new paths. Pokemon Diamond & Pearl's Sinnoh is a fairly rocky region, so it's very useful for your progression.

  • How to get Rock Smash: Rock Smash is mercifully unmissable; it'll be given to you by a friendly, chatty Hiker Trainer as you make your way towards Oreburgh City. You won't be able to use it right away, however.
  • How to use Rock Smash: You can unlock Rock Smash for use on the overworld by simply progressing the story. You'll first need to make your way to Oreburgh City proper and beat the Gym Leader, Roark. After that, you can use Rock Smash via the Poketch.

Cut - slicing plants

A Pokemon staple, this slices away obstacles like certain trees in order to open up new pathways.

  • How to get Cut: Cynthia will hand over TM93 Cut as part of the story, in Eterna City, at the Galactic Building.
  • How to use Cut: Once you have the TM, you first need to defeat Eterna City Gym in order to use Cut on the overworld.
  • Places to use Cut: Route 206, 210, 212, 215, 222, 224, 225, 229, Eterna City, Eterna Forest, Great Marsh

pokemon_brilliant_diamond_shining_pearl_fly.jpg

Fly - fast travel

Fly is Pokemon's equivalent of Fast Travel, and in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl you can use it to travel to any of the game's Towns and Cities, plus a few other key locations - but you must have visited them naturally first.

  • How to get Fly: You'll find this TM when you tackle the Galactic Warehouse, a sort of mini-dungeon. This is a missable item, though you can go back and get it any time. It's inside a Pokeball within the Galactic Warehouse.
  • How to use Fly: In order to actually use Fly and begin that sweet, sweet fast travel life, you'll need to defeat the Veilstone City gym. After that, you can fly from any non-dungeon outdoor location at your leisure.

pokemon_brilliant_diamond_shining_pearl_defog.jpg

Defog - clearing fog

Defog is a HM that wasn't present in the oldest Pokemon games, though functionally it's very similar to Flash - it's a move that gets rid of an annoying visual effect (rather than darkness, this time it's fog), allowing you to explore new areas.

  • How to get Defog: You'll find TM97 for Defog near the start of the Great Marsh zone - at the gate, near Pastoria City. Talk to the green-haired NPC on the right as you enter the Marsh.
  • How to use Defog: As ever, you'll need to beat the challenges of a gym in order to use Defog out of battle. Beat the nearby Pastoria City Gym to unlock the ability to use it with your Poketch to clear away fog.
  • Where to use Defog: Route 210, Mt. Coronet, Lost Tower, Victory Road

pokemon_brilliant_diamond_shining_pearl_surf.jpg

Surf - swimming over water

Perhaps the most iconic of the HMs, Surf allows you to float over water, which opens up access to new areas as well as a much wider variety of random encounters with wild water-type Pokemon. Sadly, you can't get a surfing Pikachu in this game.

  • How to get Surf: TM95 Surf can be found in Celestic Town, but you'll only be able to find it after examining the ruins and dealing with Team Galactic. After all that's happened, Cynthia's Grandmother will hand over the TM.
  • How to use Surf: To unlock the use of Surf, you'll need to head to Hearthome City Gym. Defeat its leader and among your rewards is the ability to use Surf outside of battle, allowing the trainer to ride around on a wild Bibarel.

Strength - moving boulders

A classic HM present right the way back to Pokemon Red, Blue, and Green, Strength lets you shift around Boulders - which is used for completing traditional top-down rock sliding puzzles, basically.

  • How to get Strength: You'll be able to grab TM96 Strength on the very top floor of the Lost Tower, which you can reach from Route 209.
  • How to use Strength: In order to unlock the use of Strength outside of battle, you'll first need to defeat the boss of the Canalave City Gym.
  • Places to use Strength: Iron Island, Mt. Coronet, Oreburgh Gate, Snowpoint Temple, Stark Mountain, Victory Road

pokemon_brilliant_diamond_shining_pearl_rock_climb.jpg

Rock Climb - clambering cliffs

We've smashed rocks, we've pushed them about - and now we complete the trilogy with climbing them. Honestly, this works a lot like Waterfall, but with pathways carved out of the rocks in mountainsides.

  • Where to get Rock Climb: To use Rock Climb you'll need to obtain TM100, which is found on Route 217. Inside the snowstorm, go into the cabin and chat to the Hiker Trainers. After that, search for the TM100 Rock Climb item among the snow outside.
  • How to use Rock Climb: Given where you found it, it's perhaps appropriate that you'll need to conquer the Snowpoint City Gym in order to use Rock Climb out in the overworld.
  • Places to use Rock Climb: Route 207, 208, 210, 213, 216, 225, 226, 227, Mt. Coronet, Sendoff Spring, Stark Mountain, Sunyshore City, Veilstone City, Victory Road

Waterfall - aquatic elevators

One of the slightly newer HM skills, Waterfall is pretty simple - it lets you clamber up waterfalls, allowing you to use them as aquatic stairways. It's the perfect pairing with Surf.

  • Where to get Waterfall: This one is actually nice and simple. First of all, you have to defeat the Sunyshore City Gym Leader, Volkner. After that, go to Sunyshore City Beach and talk to Jasmine, the Olivine City Gym Leader. She'll hand over TM99, Waterfall.
  • How to use Waterfall: This one is actually simple! By the time you can go get Waterfall off Jasmine, you've already unlocked the ability to use it outside of battle.
  • Places to use Waterfall: Route 208, 210, 211, Mt. Coronet, Pokemon League, Victory Road

In order to get the TM for fly, you will need to get to Veilstone City. This will be your third gym badge town so you will end up here eventually. Beat the gym leader and then head back out into the town.

Dawn will talk to you and ask you to meet her up near the team Galactic warehouse. Go up to the warehouse and beat down the bad guys to gain access to the building. Head inside the building and grab the item to get Fly. Put fly on one of your flying Pokemon and they will be able to fast travel you places. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: Where To Get Fly

Flying is the easiest way to travel get around Sinnoh in Pokemon BDSP, so how exactly do you get it? This guide tells you everything you need to know.

Quick Links

What can you do with fly, how to get fly.

HMs are one of the core mechanics of Pokemon Diamond & Pearl that return in the remakes in a different form. In the original games, you could teach a Pokemon an HM, and they could use it to aid you on your adventure in the overworld.

RELATED: How Long Does It Take To Beat Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl?

In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl , you don't need to teach a specific Pokemon an HM to use its ability, so you can use the Fly ability outside of battle without any of your Pokemon learning it. Here's how you can get Fly in Pokemon BDSP, along with everything you should know about this useful ability.

Updated March 19, 2023 : We've gone over this guide to make sure it's as accurate and readable as it can be, especially as Fly is one of the most important quality-of-life improvements you can get in a Pokemon game.

Fly is one of the most useful abilities you can receive on your Pokemon adventure because it allows you to revisit towns and cities that you've previously been to by calling upon a Pokemon to carry you from one location to another. Sinnoh is a big region, and each town has unique NPCs, so there are many reasons you may need to use Fly to return to a town quickly.

Unfortunately, you can't use Fly inside buildings or caves , so you can't use this ability to escape from an inside area that you wish to leave. Fly is an outside-exclusive ability.

You can use Fly through the Poketch , and a random Pokemon will carry you to any location you desire, so there's no reason to keep a Flying-type Pokemon in your party exclusively for the Fly ability.

Like other abilities in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, you need to get the Fly HM and have permission to use it. This is a two-step process, so there are a few things you need to do before you can soar through the Sinnoh sky.

How To Earn Permission To Use Fly

Before you can use Fly, you need to unlock permission to use it by traveling to Veilstone City and defeating Maylene in a gym battle . Maylene is a powerful Fighting-type gym leader with three strong Pokemon in her party.

The first Pokemon Maylene uses is a Meditite, which is a dual Fighting/Psychic-type. Next, you'll face a Lucario, which you may know for its unique Fighting/ Steel-type . The final Pokemon Maylene uses is a Machoke, which is a Fighting-type. You could bring a powerful Flying-type to counter Maylene's Fighting-type Pokemon , such as Staraptor.

Once you defeat Maylene, she will permit you to use Fly outside of combat.

After you defeat Maylene, you can travel to the northern side of Veilstone City to challenge a Team Galactic Base that appears as a Warehouse. There are a few Team Galactic Grunts you need to defeat before you can enter the building; however, they're much weaker than Maylene. When you enter the Warehouse, you'll find TM94 , which contains the Fly ability.

You can now leave the Warehouse and start using Fly. This is a good time to return to previous locations to capture Pokemon and find items you didn't get the first time around.

How to Get Running Shoes, Bicycle, and in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP)

Running Shoes

It's pretty simple. Once you are in Twinleaf City at the beginning of the game, you receive Running Shoes from the main character's mother.

Unfortunately, you won't get the bicycle as quickly as Running Shoes. Follow the steps below to unlock the bicycle but be aware that this guide includes spoilers :

  • Play the game until you unlock Eterna City.
  • Head to the Team Galactic building in Eterna City and talk to Cynthia. It's a skyscraper in the north of the city.
  • Get the Cut Technical Machine (TM) from Cynthia.
  • Now defeat the GYM boss.
  • Use the Cut TM to cut the trees in front of the Team Galactic building.
  • Now go inisde the building.
  • Defeat all the enemies and thier boss, who is called Jupiter.
  • At the end of the fight, you will set the owner of Bicycle Shop free.
  • Now head downward from the Team Galactic building and you will find the Bicycle Shop a few steps downward from the Pokemon Center.
  • Talk to the shop owner and then you will get a bicycle as your reward.

That's all! Now you can travel faster in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl regions with either Running Shoes or your very own bicycle.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pear l will be officially available on Nintendo Switch on November 19.

Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: The 5 Fastest Pokemon & Where To Catch Them

Speed is essential for winning Pokemon battles. Here are some of the best speedsters in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have finally been released worldwide. These games are taking Trainers back to the mystical region of Sinnoh, albeit in a slightly more ‘chibi’ style than many were expecting. But just as in the original versions (and all other Pokemon games), building a team is the central focus, and just as fun as ever.

MORE: The Best Fan Challenges To Make Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Harder

Pokemon with a high base Speed stat are an essential part of any competitive Pokemon line-up. These Pokemon can turn the tides of battle by taking out their opponents before they can land a blow. If players want to add a speedster to their team in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl , these Pokemon are top picks. This list will not include Legendary Pokemon that require a mystery event, such as Darkrai, Cresselia, and Shaymin, as these cannot yet be obtained within the game. All those below, on the other hand, are easy to find and would be an asset to any team.

Ninjask is the fastest non-Legendary Pokemon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl . With an extraordinary base Speed stat of 160, this dual Bug/Flying-type Pokemon is perfect for anyone looking for a speedster to join their team. In addition to this massive base stat, its Speed Boost ability causes its Speed stat to increase by one stage every turn. It is only outsped by Speed Forme Deoxys, which cannot be accessed through official means at time of writing. Granted, it is a bit fragile — this Pokemon's x4 Rock-type weakness makes some trainers wary, but as this type is not too common, it's not usually that big of a problem.

Ninjask's pre-evolution, Nincada, can be found in Sunlit Cavern, Still-Water Cavern, Grass Water Cave, and Grass Cave . It can also be found in Eterna Forest using the PokeRadar method after unlocking the National Dex. Players can evolve Nincada into Ninjask at Level 20 to get this speedy bug.

4 Electrode

This Generation 1 Pokemon cannot be found in the wild in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl . Instead, players must first catch a Voltorb, and level it up to 30 to evolve it into Electrode.

Players can find a Voltorb in the Grand Underground , although it cannot be registered in the Pokedex until the National Dex is unlocked upon completing the main game. If Trainers want to add this Electric-type Pokemon with a base speed stat of 140 to their team, they must head over to either Stargleam Cavern or Dazzling Cave to catch the pre-evolution.

Known as the "evolution Pokemon" , Eevee has garnered a huge fan base over the years due to its adorable design and amazing potential. Jolteon is its Electric-type evolution and it is as zippy as it is zappy.

MORE: All the Regional Variant Pokemon, Ranked

There are two options for Trainers looking to add this Pokemon to their team. The first option is to head over to Hearthome City and check out the house next door to the Pokemon Center. Bebe, the developer of the local Pokemon Storage System, will give players an Eevee after they have obtained the National Dex. The second option is to head over to the Trophy Garden just behind the Pokemon Mansion on Route 212. A level 16 Eevee has a 20% chance of appearing here.

After, the player will need a Thunderstone to evolve their Eevee. All Evolution stones have a chance of spawning in the mining minigame in the Grand Underground. There are also two separate Thunder Stones in the Sinnoh overworld. One can be found on Route 229, and another is in Sunyshore City.

2 Aerodactyl

Aerodactyl is a Generation 1 Rock/Flying Fossil Pokemon that has been praised since the release of Pokemon Red/Blue for its base 130 Speed stat. In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl , players must dig up an Old Amber in the Grand Underground. This fossil will only become available once the National Dex has been unlocked.

Where gold sparkles appear on the walls in the Grand Underground, players will be able to mine for fossils. Once the minigame is complete and the correct fossil has been found, head to Oreburgh and enter the Mining Museum . By speaking to the man at the counter, Trainers will be able to revive Aerodactyl and add it to their party once leaving and re-entering the building.

The friendship mechanic has been a key aspect of Pokemon since the early days of Pokemon Yellow .

Crobat has a base Speed stat of 130, making it one of the fastest Pokemon in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl . If players want to add this Pokemon to their team, they must first catch Zubat. This is a fairly common Generation 1 Pokemon that can be found as early as the Oreburgh Gate and Mine , which players can enter without beating the first gym. Zubat can also be found in the following locations:

  • Wayward Cave
  • Acuity Lakefront
  • Route 216-217
  • Ravaged Path
  • Lost Tower,
  • Iron Island
  • Turnback Cave
  • Victory Road

It can also be found in the Grand Underground locations as follows:

  • Sunlit Cavern
  • Bogsunk Cavern

Zubat will evolve into Golbat at level 22, who will evolve into Crobat once friendship is high enough. Players can increase their Pokemon's friendship by feeding it rare candies, walking with it, feeding it vitamins and giving it a Soothe Bell. Feeding a Pokemon herbs or letting it faint in battle will have a negative impact on its friendship level.

If players would prefer to catch Golbat, it can be found on:

  • Stark Mountain
  • Mt. Coronet
  • Snowpoint Temple
  • Oreburgh Gate/Mine

It can also be found in the Grand Underground in:

How to level up fast in pokémon brilliant diamond & shining pearl.

There are ways for players to level up fast in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pearl. It begins with locating a Chansey with a Lucky Egg.

Players can level up their Pokemon fast in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl . In the beginning, players will choose their starter in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. One of fire, water, or grass. This starter will always be level 5 at the beginning of the game and as players progress, their Pokemon will become stronger. Although, there may be some points in the story where players are struggling against a specific battle. The game certainly does get more difficult towards the end, and players will need to grind their Pokemon to make them stronger.

For starters, players will want to find the Lucky Egg item. This is an item that when given to a Pokemon, will give it more XP than normal at the end of the battle. Players can obtain this item in two ways. Either stealing it from a Chansey by using Thief in order to steal its Held Item, or if players don't have Thief, they can also aim to capture the Chansey. It has the chance to hold a Lucky Egg which can be equipped to other members of the team. Chanseys spawn in Route 209 and Route 210 and can also appear in the Trophy Garden st the Pokemon Mansion.

Related: The Best Defense Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

To level up fast in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl , make sure to equip the Lucky Egg on the Pokemon the player wants to level up. There are a few key locations in Sinnoh that are perfect for grinding. It all begins once the player gains access to Iron Island and finds the VS. Seeker.

Leveling Up Fast in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

  • Iron Island: Upon reaching Iron Island for the first time in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl , players will have Riley as a partner. For this entire area, players will be able to participate in Double Battles. Beat every Team Galactic Grunt and wild Pokemon the player desires, then speak with Riley to instantly heal the team at any time.
  • VS. Seeker: This item allows players to rechallenge all the trainers they have previously battled. Not only that, but all trainers will have stronger versions of their teams. Beating trainer Pokemon earns players more XP than wild battles. The VS. Seeker will recharge after 100 steps.
  • Chansey Grinding: Some Pokemon have a higher XP catch rate than others. Since Chansey has so much HP, it will give players tons of XP if they defeat it. They appear on Route 209 and 210.

It's recommended to have something else happening in the background while grinding in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl . It's a monotonous process, especially for players aiming to get to level 100. Combining all of these methods should make the process easier.

Time to level up!

During your time playing Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl , your Pokémon party will naturally level up and EXP share between themselves as you take on wild Pokémon, trainer battles and gyms. Sometimes, however, this isn't enough, especially if you're trying to level up a new party member quickly.

In this guide, we explain different ways to level up fast in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Table of Contents

Never skip a battle, battle in pokémon hideaways, rematch gym leaders, use vs. seeker, equip the lucky egg.

A Pokémon Trainer is about to battle with a Shinx in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

This is obvious, but whether it is a wild Pokémon or a trainer that surprises you, if you want to earn EXP, you should never avoid a battle! Especially on later routes where the Pokémon you're up against will be higher levelled, it's important to take these on, both for the EXP and the money , too.

A Pokémon Trainer in the Pokémon Hideaways of the Grand Underground in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Nearby Pokémon that can be seen are Bidoof, Gastrodon, Psyduck, and Buizel.

In the Grand Underground , the areas where you can find random items and battle with wild Pokémon are known as Pokémon Hideaways. These Pokémon will typically have a level that is comparable to that of your party, so fighting with them repeatedly can gather you that much-needed EXP. However, it's worth noting that battling with Trainers and Gym Leaders will earn more EXP than wild Pokémon battles, with the added bonus of being able to earn some cash from the Trainer battles too.

The Oreburgh City Gym leader, Roark, of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is shown.

It might take a while for your Pokémon party to reach levels of 60 and above, but when you do, you can rematch and attempt to beat the Gym Leaders all over again. This is a great way to earn even more EXP and more money, and learn about facing new types of Pokémon. To have a better idea of how to counter each Pokémon type, check out our type-chart to help make the gym leader rematches a little easier.

A Pokémon Trainer and their Palkia face an elderly Pokémon Training duo near to Pokémon Mansion in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

The Vs. Seeker is an item that a player can equip to be able to battle with all Pokémon Trainer's around the Sinnoh Region. By using it along Routes and other areas that are rife with Pokémon Trainers, it'll alert you who's up for a battle. More battling with more Trainers means more EXP!

It's important to note that the Vs. Seeker item can be found under 'Key Items' in your Bag, and will recharge after every 100 steps. To keep a track of this, you can use the Pedometer on your Pokétch !

When a Pokémon is holding the Lucky Egg item and participates in a battle, they will earn 1.5x the amount of EXP gained. To get the Lucky Egg, you will need to go and collect Chansey's who have a chance of holding the item when you capture them. Alternatively, if one of your Pokémon has the Thief move, they can attempt to steal the Lucky Egg item from a Chansey while battling them.

Good luck with levelling up your party of Pokémon. In the meantime, it may also be worth looking at fishing in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl as a means of encountering new Pokémon and earning EXP. Alternatively, if you need a break from the grind of battling, try participating in Super Contest Shows or visiting Amity Square .

Get a Lucky Egg

Lucky Egg Icy Cavern

Lucky Eggs are one of the items that help level up Pokemon quickly . Pokemon that hold Lucky Eggs earn 1.5x more experience points from battles. This will dramatically help you reach higher levels in less time.

The easiest way to obtain the Lucky Egg is by going underground at Acuity Lakefront and heading to the top-leftmost room in the underground map. Enter the room to Icy Cave , and the item can be picked up in the middle of the area.

Get more Lucky Eggs

You can buy more Lucky Eggs at the Battle Tower for 77 BP . It's a steep cost but it can be well worth it!

Defeat Pokemon in Hideaways

Pokemon BDSP Hideaways Level Scaling

Pokemon in Hideaways have level scaling , so you'll never have a hard time finding wild Pokemon to match your current party's level. Additionally, it's incredibly helpful that you can see the Pokemon in the overworld of Hideaways, so you can pick and choose which Pokemon you'd prefer to beat for EXP, based off their typing or if they're evolved.

Pokemon Hideaways Guide

Best Hideaways to farm EXP

When grinding for levels, try to target Pokemon that give higher EXP. We've noticed that evolved Pokemon and bulkier Pokemon tend to give more EXP than unevolved ones. The hideaways listed above are home to some of the more generous EXP sources in the Grand Underground.

Rematch High Level Trainers

Ace trainer ariana on route 228.

On Route 228 , Ace Trainer Ariana can be found with 3, level 54 Pokemon, one of which is Chansey which offers a good chunk of EXP. You can use the Vs. Seeker to rematch her repeatedly.

Farm EXP by Defeating the Elite Four

BDSP - Farm EXP at the Elite 4.png

Have 2 or 3 strong Pokemon on your team to handle as much of the Elite Four as you can, and fill the rest of your party with the Pokemon you want to soak EXP. For players in the post-game, rematch teams may be harder , however, there is no shame in losing since even defeating just Aaron will net you upwards of 16,000 EXP per Pokemon .

If you're worried about losing money from whiting out, don't worry! You can make back the money you lost in no time. It's a lot easier to earn money than EXP after all! How to Get Money Fast: Pokedollars Farming Guide

Defeat Wild Pokemon

Pokemon BDSP Wild Pokemon

Getting into lots of wild Pokemon battles in the tall grass remains the primary method for farming EXP points to level up fast. Later routes have higher level Pokemon, of course, so fight Pokemon in the routes/areas most recently unlocked before fighting a Gym.

Farm wild battles on later routes

Pokemon BDSP Oreburgh Mine

For example, Oreburgh Mine offers the highest level wild Pokemon before facing the Oreburgh Gym , since that is the last area you need to pass before unlocking the Gym. Similarily, before facing the Eterna Gym , you should battle Pokemon on Route 211 (east of Eterna), rather than Route 205 (west of Eterna), since Route 211 is the later unlock and generally has higher level Pokemon.

Double Battles

Pokemon BDSP Eterna Forest

You can get 2 Double Battle partners in the early game; Cheryl in Eterna Forest and Mira in Wayward Cave . Instead of immediately bringing them to the exits of their respective areas, you can encounter wild Pokemon alongside them, which will cause 2 wild Pokemon to appear per battle .

Having 2 wild Pokemon appear makes level grinding less tedious, since your Pokemon gets all the EXP from the double battle. Additionally, Cheryl and Mira will restore your Pokemon's HP and PP after each wild battle, which will save you from using items or visitng the Pokemon Center.

  • Double Battles Guide

Utilize Vs. Seeker

Utilize the Vs. Seeker to rechallenge all the trainers you've encountered in your journey thus far. It's worth rebattling all trainers even as far back as Route 202, as most trainers will have Pokemon at least Level 30 , and even evolved, by the time you've reached the Pokemon league.

How to Use the Vs. Seeker

Pokemon BDSP Trainer Battle

Use the Vs. Seeker from the Key Items pocket of your bag. It will send out a signal to all trainers currently on your screen . If a trainer wants to rebattle, 2 red exclamation points ( !! ) will appear above them. After a use of the Vs. Seeker (whether you found trainers to rebattle or not), you'll need to walk 100 steps to recharge it .

Unfortunately, you can't use the Vs. Seeker in caves or buildings, so all the high leveled trainers on Victory Road can't be rebattled.

Double Battles in Iron Island

Pokemon BDSP Double Battle Partner

You can get Riley as a Double Battle partner the first time you visit Iron Island . You can visit Iron Island by talking to the sailor at the Canalave City dock, so it's a great for leveling up fast in the midgame . You'll have Riley as a partner up until you defeat the Galactic Grunts in Iron Island.

Like with Cheryl and Mira, you can encounter wild Pokemon alongside Riley, which will cause 2 wild Pokemon to appear per battle . Your Pokemon likewise gets all the EXP for the double battles on Iron Island. Riley similarly restores your Pokemon's HP and PP after each battle.

Rematch the Elite Four Repeatedly

BDSP - Battle Against Cynthia

For trainers looking to create stronger teams to face the Battle Tower , they have to train their Pokemon up to at least Level 50 first. The fastest way to do this is by rematching the Elite Four . Most of the Elite Four's Pokemon give a lot of EXP when defeated, and rematching them is the only place you can consistently find high-leveled ones.

When up agains the rematch teams, it could end up being difficult. But, even taking down one or two Elite Four members before whiting out will earn you more EXP in a shorter time than training in the Underground.

  • All Elite Four Rematch Teams

Rare Candy instantaneously levels up a Pokemon by 1. You should save the Rare Candies you collect on various routes/areas.

Save Rare Candies for the Pokemon League

The best time to use it would be right before challenging the Elite Four , since the level difference between the strongest Pokemon of the final Gym Leader ( Volkner ) and the first Elite Four member ( Aaron ) is almost 10 whole levels.

You undoubtedly should use any leftover Rare Candies right before fighting Champion Cynthia , who's entire team is Level 60 and above.

Pokemon holding a Lucky Egg will get 1.5x more EXP points if they participate in battle . The easiest way to obtain the Lucky Egg is by going underground at Acuity Lakefront and heading to the top-leftmost room in the underground map.

Entire Party Gains Experience Points

Party EXP Gain

Everytime you defeat a Pokemon in battle, you will be rewarded with Experience Points. This includes the rest of your Pokemon in your party, even if they did not participate in battles.

It is therefore possible to train Pokemon such as Magikarp , which is difficult to send out in battle, just by letting them stay in your party.

Experience Points can also be gained when catching Pokemon

Successfully catching a Pokemon will also give Exp. Points, so make sure to catch lots of wild Pokemon!

Pokemon Received From Trade Gain Bonus Exp. Points

BDSP - Trade

Pokemon obtained through trading from NPCs in-game and from other players can receive additional Exp. Points.

Do note however that depending on how many Gym Badges you have, they may not follow your orders and refrain from doing a move if their level is too high , so be careful not to raise there level beyond the limit.

  • How to Trade Locally and Online

Get More Exp. Points with Lucky Egg

Equipping a Pokemon with the item Lucky Egg will allow it to gain 1.5x more Exp. Points. Make sure to equip Lucky Egg when levelling up multiple Pokemon to speed up the process.

How to Get Lucky Egg and Effect

Max Level is 100

The maximum level a Pokemon can reach is Level 100. When a Pokemon reaches Level 100, you will not be able to gain Exp. Points, so if you have a Pokemon to raise separately, keep it out of your party.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

fast travel pokemon brilliant diamond

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

fast travel pokemon brilliant diamond

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

fast travel pokemon brilliant diamond

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

fast travel pokemon brilliant diamond

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
