Tips for Gay and Lesbian Travelers in Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands, along with Puerto Rico, are some of the most gay-friendly destinations in the Caribbean. However, discretion is still advised in some parts. Islanders tend to be very religious and conservative, and displays of same-sex affection, such as hand holding, are frowned upon.

St. Thomas is the most cosmopolitan of the Virgin Islands, but it is no longer the "gay paradise" it was in the 1960s and 1970s. Most gay vacationers now head for Frederiksted, in St. Croix, which has more hotels and other establishments catering primarily to the gay market, none better than the Sand Castle on the Beach or the Palms at Pelican Cove . In Charlotte Amalie, on St. Thomas, the most boisterous gay nightlife takes place in the Frenchtown section of the city. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights beginning at around 11pm, gay men and women flock to Stereo, Frenchtown Mall, 24-A Honduras, in Frenchtown (tel. 340/774-5348 ), which is upstairs over the Epernay Bistro.

The B.V.I., however, still remain uptight and closeted toward gay visitors. Sometimes when a gay man wants to let loose, he takes the boat to Charlotte Amalie.

Dreamy tropical vibes prevail across the Caribbean, where the people are as warm as the waves. But when it comes to LGBT-friendly Caribbean destinations, some islands are keener to roll out the rainbow welcome mats.

As a region, the West Indies encompasses 13 independent nations; plus about a dozen more territories that are part of the United States, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. It’s those latter islands where gay and lesbian travelers usually feel more at ease since local laws around homosexuality and same-sex marriage match those of their parent countries.

That’s not to say that gay and lesbian travelers won’t feel safe or welcome in less-progressive destinations. But rather than plan vacations to one of the dozen Caribbean islands where homosexuality is criminalized (surprising, but true), most travelers simply prefer to vacation where they’ll feel comfortable.

In fact, according to a 2019 survey , 86 percent of LGBT travelers admit that a destination’s policies toward the LGBT community are at least somewhat important when deciding where to travel. Conducted by the IGLTA Foundation and Airbnb , the survey also revealed that 51 percent of LGBT respondents are “very unlikely” to travel to a country where being LGBT is illegal. Still, the world is evolving when it comes to acceptance and equality—including in the Caribbean, where more and more cities are hosting Pride celebrations and flying rainbow flags.

LGBT-Friendly Caribbean Islands

Here’s a closer look at the most gay-friendly Caribbean destinations.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

san juan sunset

The fourth-largest Caribbean island is a gay-friendly U.S. territory that’s home to 3.1 million residents, with at least as many visitors every year. In the capital city of San Juan, LGBT visitors can enjoy Puerto Rican hospitality in its historic downtown, where the culinary and nightlife scenes are booming. In the beachfront neighborhood of Condado, the Atlantic Beach Hotel and Oasis Lounge are regular gay hotspots, both just steps away from the low-key gay-beach area. For a resort that’s lesbian-friendly too, the recently renovated San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino is a favorite for its central location on the beach, spacious balcony rooms, plus live salsa music on weekends.

In the Santurce neighborhood, La Placita is a public market by day and busy social scene by night. Among its strip of bars is El Patio de Lila , a gay-friendly watering hole that’s especially happening on Friday nights. Nearby, head to the trendy restaurant Santaella or the more casual Jose Enrique for some of San Juan’s best dining. Or sample the city’s tastiest delights by joining one of Spoon Food Tours fabulous walkabouts, where knowledgeable guides can tip you off to LGBT goings-on.

Bonus: Puerto Rico is home to two of the Caribbean’s biggest LGBT Pride events. The Puerto Rico Pride march and festival takes place in San Juan each May, while Boqueron Pride (near Cabo Rojo) follows in early June for a splashy weekend beach celebration.

True to its Dutch heritage, the Lesser Antilles’s island of Aruba is a proud Caribbean paradise ever eager to welcome LGBT travelers. The month of June is the island’s official Pride month , launching a series of events to celebrate diversity in and around the capital city Oranjestad. Resorts and hotels all over Aruba are welcoming but count on the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino and Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino for Pride season packages, plus adults-only pool and beach areas. Oranjestad also is home to District 7 , an LGBT-centric nightclub, lounge, restaurant, and inn (which was once a simpler gay bar called Jimmy’s Place).

Like Aruba, Curacao is a Dutch territory that’s progressive and inclusive, a trademark of the Netherlands. But to welcome gay and lesbian Caribbean visitors, this small island goes the extra mile by being an active member of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association ( IGLTA ). Plus, the island offers queer travelers guidance with handy PinkCuracao , an online travel resource with recommended hotels, restaurants, tours, boutiques, and more. Floris Suite Hotel Spa and Beach Club Curaçao is the go-to gay hotel in Willemstad, where adult guests can enjoy luxury, privacy, and views of the island’s famously-blue waters. Among Curacao’s flirtier spots is MooMba Beach Club , perched on the island’s most gay-friendly beach and serving up cocktails, live music, fresh seafood, and weekend barbeques.

This island loves to celebrate, and every September it hosts the five-day Curacao Pride festival with a slate of activities in towns, on beaches, and on the water. Come February (or March), Curacao Carnival becomes winter’s most colorful, all-welcoming celebration.

St. martin/st. maarten.

St. Martin/St. Maarten is one Caribbean island that’s doubly gay-friendly. As the world’s smallest territory shared by two nations, St. Martin enjoys all the liberties of the French Republic on its northern half, while the southerly St. Maarten is a member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. No matter which side you visit, you can enjoy the island’s easygoing atmosphere.

LGBT travelers can take their pick of gay-centric beaches to swim, sunbathe, and snorkel, especially Happy Bay Beach and the clothing-optional Orient Bay Beach (both on the French side), and Cupecoy Beach (Dutch side) where nude sunbathing is common. Visitors can discover lesbian- and gay-owned businesses with handy Gay Sint Maarten , which offers listings for the entire island. For fun in Dutch Philipsburg, don’t miss the long-running cabaret and drag show L’Escargot , and open-air dancing at Bliss on Maho Beach. Or head to Club Eros to dance at one of the island’s main late-night gay bars in the French town of Marigot. (Tip: Locals often refer to the island by its airport code “SXM.”)

The French island territory Saint-Barthélemy, nicknamed St. Bart’s, enjoys the same marriage equality as France, as do its sister islands of Martinique, St. Martin, and Guadeloupe. But more than the others, St. Bart’s is among the most gay-friendly Caribbean destinations overall—thanks in part to its ritzy reputation as a celebrity vacation hideaway. The wee island measures just 10 square miles, and LGBT travelers can enjoy relaxed attitudes, even without any official gay bars or Pride events. But at all-welcoming/gay-leaning Saline Beach, travelers relax with or without clothes. And you can patronize gay-owned businesses like colorful Le Pasha boutique and La Cantina bar in Gustavia; and saucy Le Ti cabaret and tavern in Pointe Milou.

To the east and south of Puerto Rico are the U.S. Virgin Islands, comprised of St. John, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and several minor islands. Their cluster anchors the northern Lesser Antilles, and together they’re among the most gay-friendly Caribbean destinations. Each of the three main islands is blissfully welcoming to all travelers (some of whom take day trips from the neighboring British Virgin Islands), and rainbow stickers adorn many a local business.

St. Thomas has its share of both upscale and casual hotels, restaurants, and attractions, concentrated mainly in Frenchtown (near the cruise ship port). But St. Croix is more populous and has a fun, active LGBT community. Among a handful of gay guesthouses on St. Croix is Frederiksted’s Sand Castle on the Beach , a hit for same-sex weddings and honeymoon packages. Plus, each June St. Croix ushers in STX Pride , with a month full of LGBT events that continue year-round. The organization’s motto is “the most gay friendly island in the Caribbean,” and based on its long roster of local hosts and sponsors, it’s clear how inclusive the destination really is.

Embracing Diversity: The Allure of the Caribbean

Welcome to the vibrant Caribbean! In this chapter, we delve into the unique charm of this tropical paradise, highlighting its diversity, the inclusivity of its local communities, and the safety considerations for LGBTQ travelers.

The Caribbean's Enchanting Appeal

The Caribbean , with its kaleidoscope of stunning landscapes and diverse cultures, is a popular choice for travelers worldwide. Its clear turquoise waters, powdery white sands, and abundant marine life offer a slice of paradise. But beyond its natural allure, the Caribbean also shines as a beacon of diversity and inclusivity, emerging as a prime destination for LGBTQ Travel .

Diversity: The Caribbean's Rainbow Spectrum

The true beauty of the Caribbean islands lies in their diversity. Not only do they feature a range of ecosystems, from rainforests to reefs, but they also boast a broad cultural spectrum that welcomes all visitors, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Several islands stand out as particularly LGBTQ-friendly, with progressive policies and welcoming communities. These include Puerto Rico , Curacao, St. Barts , St. Martin , and the U.S. Virgin Islands .

Navigating the Waters: Safety Considerations in Caribbean Travel

While many Caribbean destinations are opening their arms to the LGBTQ community, it's essential for travelers to be aware of the varying attitudes towards LGBTQ rights across the region. Some islands, such as Jamaica , Barbados , Saint Lucia, Grenada , and Dominica , have been flagged by various human rights organizations for their less than favorable LGBTQ policies. However, the situation is ever-evolving, and it is vital for travelers to stay updated on the latest news and insights.

Pride in Paradise: Celebrating Inclusivity in the Caribbean

The Caribbean is more than just beautiful beaches and sizzling sunshine. It's a region where love, pride, and inclusivity are celebrated in a vibrant, community-led way. From the flamboyant Carnival in Puerto Rico to the colorful Pride parade in Curacao, these islands show their support for the LGBTQ community in the most delightful and unforgettable ways.

Guided by Experts: Ensuring a Safe and Memorable Caribbean LGBTQ Travel Experience

Navigating the complexities of international travel can be challenging, especially when it comes to understanding LGBTQ rights in various countries. That's where the expertise of a trusted travel agency comes in. With their fingers on the pulse of global travel trends and in-depth knowledge of each destination's cultural nuances, they can provide invaluable advice to ensure a safe and enriching travel experience.

Unveiling Caribbean Gems: Five LGBTQ-Friendly Destinations

As we navigate the vibrant Caribbean , we bring into focus five prominent LGBTQ-friendly destinations. From dynamic nightlife to tranquil beaches, these destinations offer a diverse array of experiences that make for a truly unforgettable vacation.

Puerto Rico - Embracing Diversity in a Tropical Paradise

Puerto Rico , often regarded as the Caribbean's glittering star, is a haven of inclusivity and multicultural richness. This tropical paradise holds a special place in the heart of the LGBTQ community, thanks to its commitment to celebrating diversity.

The capital city, San Juan, is a vibrant blend of historic charm and contemporary dynamism. It's here where you'll find a thriving LGBTQ scene, with an abundance of gay-friendly establishments from stylish boutiques to hip bars and inviting restaurants. The Condado and Santurce neighborhoods, in particular, are well-known for their gay-friendly vibe and establishments.

But San Juan's appeal extends beyond its urban allure. The city hosts the largest Pride event in the Caribbean , a flamboyant fiesta of love and acceptance that brings together locals and visitors in a heartwarming celebration of diversity. Venture outside the city, and you'll discover pristine beaches like Balneario de Carolina and Playa Flamenco, offering an idyllic escape where you can relax or indulge in thrilling water sports.

Curacao, Kingdom of the Netherlands - A Slice of Dutch Caribbean Bliss

Curacao, an enchanting Dutch Caribbean island, is recognized for its “Live and Let Live” philosophy. This open-minded attitude has shaped a welcoming landscape for LGBTQ travelers, making Curacao an inviting destination for a tropical getaway.

At the heart of Curacao lies Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its colourful colonial architecture. Here, you can immerse yourself in the island's multicultural heritage, stroll along the charming waterfront, and explore bustling markets.

Curacao's appeal doesn't end with its vibrant capital. The island plays host to a week-long Pride event filled with festivities, from beach parties to boat cruises, affirming its commitment to the LGBTQ community. Beyond its cultural attractions, Curacao is home to exquisite beaches like Kenepa Grandi and Cas Abao, where turquoise waters meet golden sands - a perfect setting for rest and relaxation.

St. Barts, France - The Epitome of Luxury and Inclusivity

St. Barts , a French Caribbean island, embodies a unique blend of tropical allure and sophisticated luxury. This stylish island has garnered a reputation as an upscale retreat, offering a refined vacation experience to its discerning guests.

St. Barts , with its strong French influence, is a liberal and open society that welcomes LGBTQ travelers. The island's upscale charm extends to its high-end resorts, gourmet restaurants, chic boutiques, and an annual Caribbean Film Festival that celebrates diversity and inclusivity.

But it's not just glitz and glamour in St. Barts . The island's natural beauty is a major draw, with secluded beaches like Anse des Flamands and Grand Cul-de-Sac providing intimate spots to unwind. Here, you can bask in the warmth of the sun, dip into crystal-clear waters, or simply relax with a good book, making St. Barts a luxurious oasis of tranquility.

St. Martin, France & the Netherlands - A Harmonious Blend of Two Cultures

St. Martin , a Caribbean island shared between French and Dutch rule, presents a dual cultural experience that's both unique and enriching. This beautiful island, with its friendly and welcoming locals, is an attractive destination for LGBTQ travelers seeking cultural immersion and diverse entertainment options.

The French side of the island, St. Martin , offers a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere. It's known for its stunning nude beaches, delectable French-Caribbean cuisine, and charming boutiques. The Dutch side, Sint Maarten, offers a more upbeat vibe, known for its bustling nightlife, exciting casinos, and the famous Maho Beach, where airplanes fly thrillingly close to the ground.

St. Martin's two halves coexist harmoniously, each boasting its own distinct charm and offering diverse experiences for LGBTQ travelers. Whether it's enjoying a sophisticated dinner at a French bistro, hitting the clubs on the Dutch side, or sunbathing at one of the island's many beaches, St. Martin guarantees a memorable experience.

U.S. Virgin Islands - A Natural Paradise for LGBTQ Travelers

The U.S. Virgin Islands , comprising three main islands—St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas—are a breathtaking testament to nature's splendor. These islands, known for their astonishing natural beauty, have been welcoming LGBTQ travelers with open arms.

St. Croix , the largest of the three, blends rich history with stunning natural scenery. It's home to colorful Christiansted and Frederiksted, the underwater national park Buck Island, and Sandy Point, one of the longest beaches in the Caribbean . St. John, predominantly a national park, is a paradise for nature lovers, with its lush forests, hiking trails, and pristine beaches like Trunk Bay.

St. Thomas , the most cosmopolitan of the trio, offers luxury shopping, fine dining, and beautiful beaches, including the popular Magens Bay. The island's bustling capital, Charlotte Amalie, holds a gay-friendly vibe, with businesses showing their support for the LGBTQ community.

Whether you're looking to explore stunning national parks, snorkel in vibrant coral reefs, or relax on sun-soaked beaches, the U.S. Virgin Islands promise an enriching and enjoyable vacation experience. As you navigate these beautiful islands, the expertise of a seasoned travel agency like The Adept Traveler ensures your journey is as seamless as it is memorable, providing up-to-date information and tailored advice to make your Caribbean dream vacation a reality.

Exercising Caution: Five Caribbean Destinations That Require Extra Vigilance

As we continue our Caribbean exploration, we bring to light five destinations where LGBTQ travelers may need to exercise extra caution due to less favorable attitudes or policies. It's always important to remember that understanding cultural norms and staying informed are key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.

Jamaica – A Cultural Powerhouse with Lingering Concerns

Jamaica , known for its reggae music, jerk spices, and vibrant nightlife, holds a significant place in the Caribbean's cultural landscape. However, despite its cultural richness, it has received attention for its less progressive attitudes towards LGBTQ rights.

While many locals embrace an inclusive mindset, certain areas and communities in Jamaica might not be as accepting. Some human rights organizations have raised concerns about Jamaica's legal stance on LGBTQ rights and reported incidents. Despite these challenges, there are signs of progress with increasing activism and public discussions promoting LGBTQ rights.

It's crucial for LGBTQ travelers visiting Jamaica to exercise vigilance and discretion, stay updated on the latest safety advisories, and respect local customs. Through this, one can still enjoy Jamaica's unique offerings, such as the bustling city life in Kingston, the beautiful beaches in Negril, or the magnificent Blue Mountains.

Barbados – Natural Beauty with Room for Progress

Barbados , with its stunning beaches, warm Bajan hospitality, and vibrant culture, is a gem in the Caribbean . However, similar to Jamaica , it has been noted for its less progressive attitudes towards LGBTQ rights.

While the Barbadian government has expressed intentions to improve its human rights reputation, the legal situation concerning LGBTQ rights remains complicated. LGBTQ travelers should exercise prudence and stay informed about local attitudes and regulations.

Nevertheless, Barbados' natural beauty is undeniable. From the inviting beaches of Carlisle Bay to the breathtaking views at Farley Hill National Park, Barbados offers numerous attractions. Enjoying these treasures with an understanding of local customs and a respect for cultural norms can enhance the travel experience.

Saint Lucia – A Tropical Paradise with Evolving Attitudes

Saint Lucia is famed for its breathtaking beauty, characterized by the iconic Piton Mountains, lush rainforests, and beautiful beaches. However, the island's stance on LGBTQ rights has elicited concerns.

While the legal situation concerning LGBTQ rights in Saint Lucia is complicated, it's essential to note that attitudes are evolving. LGBTQ travelers, however, are advised to stay updated on the current situation, exercise discretion, and respect local culture and norms.

Despite these concerns, Saint Lucia's allure remains strong. From the Sulphur Springs and Diamond Falls to the delightful Creole cuisine, Saint Lucia is a paradise waiting to be explored.

Grenada – The Spice Island with a Conservative Stance

Grenada , also known as the Spice Island for its nutmeg and mace production, is rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage. Yet, the island maintains a conservative stance on LGBTQ issues, which may pose challenges for LGBTQ travelers.

However, it's important to note that Grenada , like many other Caribbean nations, is on a path of progress with growing awareness and activism advocating for LGBTQ rights. For those visiting Grenada, understanding local attitudes, staying informed, and being respectful of local customs is key.

From the aromatic spice plantations to the underwater sculpture park and the stunning Grand Anse Beach, Grenada offers a wealth of experiences. Travelers can immerse themselves in these wonders while maintaining a level of discretion.

Dominica – The Nature Island with Traditional Values

Dominica , often referred to as the "Nature Island", is celebrated for its stunning landscapes, including lush rainforests, vibrant coral reefs, and thermal springs. However, its traditional societal values often reflect conservative attitudes towards LGBTQ rights.

While public sentiment and laws are gradually changing in Dominica , LGBTQ travelers should stay informed about the current situation and exercise caution where necessary.

Despite these issues, Dominica's natural beauty is a sight to behold. The Morne Trois Pitons National Park, the Emerald Pool, and the boiling lake are just a few of the island's treasures. Visitors can enjoy these natural wonders while respecting local customs and societal norms.

It's vital to remember that travel advisories and societal attitudes are ever-evolving. Being mindful of these aspects and leveraging the expertise of a trusted travel agency like The Adept Traveler can make your journey safer and more enriching. By staying informed and respectful, you can enjoy the unique experiences each destination has to offer.

LGBTQ Travel: Making Safe and Informed Choices

To enjoy an unforgettable and worry-free Caribbean vacation, LGBTQ travelers need to consider several factors. This chapter provides guidance on key considerations such as cultural sensitivity, safety precautions, legal implications, and the role of a reliable Travel Advisor in making informed choices.

Cultivating Cultural Sensitivity

One of the joys of traveling is the opportunity to immerse oneself in new cultures and experiences. However, it is essential to remember that each destination has its own set of societal norms and values.

While some Caribbean nations have a thriving LGBTQ scene, others may reflect more conservative values. It is crucial to approach each culture with sensitivity, understanding, and respect. Whether it's by dressing modestly or behaving discreetly in public places, maintaining cultural sensitivity can help create a more positive and respectful travel experience.

Traveling with a sense of cultural awareness not only helps ensure your safety but also helps build bridges between different communities, fostering a more inclusive global society.

Prioritizing Safety and Security

While exploring new places can be exhilarating, safety should always be a priority, especially in areas with less favorable attitudes towards LGBTQ rights. Prioritizing safety could mean staying at LGBTQ-friendly accommodations, avoiding displays of affection in public, or steering clear of isolated areas, especially at night.

In addition to physical safety, digital safety is equally important. Using secure internet connections, being cautious about sharing your location on social media, and using LGBTQ-friendly apps with robust privacy features can help ensure a secure journey.

Understanding Legal Implications

Knowing the legal situation concerning LGBTQ rights in your chosen destination is crucial. Laws regarding same-sex relationships vary significantly across the Caribbean , with some nations being more progressive than others. It's essential to familiarize yourself with the local laws and legal attitudes towards the LGBTQ community before you travel.

Knowledge of these laws can help avoid potential legal issues and allow you to make more informed decisions, contributing to a safer and more enjoyable travel experience.

The Role of a Reliable Travel Advisor

The importance of a reliable Travel Advisor cannot be overstated, especially when planning trips to destinations where cultural and legal landscapes might pose challenges for LGBTQ travelers. A dependable travel agency like The Adept Traveler can provide invaluable assistance, from sharing up-to-date information about your chosen destination to offering expert advice tailored to your needs.

A good Travel Advisor can help identify LGBTQ-friendly accommodations, restaurants, and experiences, ensuring your vacation aligns with your expectations. Moreover, they can offer advice on local customs, safety precautions, and legal implications, ensuring you're well-informed and prepared for your journey.

Building Bridges Through Travel

Travel is a powerful tool for promoting understanding and acceptance among diverse cultures. By choosing to travel as an LGBTQ individual, you become an ambassador for inclusivity and tolerance, helping to shift perceptions and broaden horizons.

While challenges exist, the strides being made in many destinations are encouraging. As more and more countries embrace diversity and equality, the world becomes a more welcoming place for everyone. In the meantime, being informed, respectful, and prepared can help ensure your Caribbean adventure is as rewarding and enjoyable as possible.

Travel, at its core, is about exploring the unfamiliar, encountering different perspectives, and creating memorable experiences. Whether you're basking under the Caribbean sun or soaking up the region's vibrant culture, the journey is as important as the destination. And with the right information and support, you can confidently embark on your next LGBTQ-friendly Caribbean adventure.

Armed with knowledge and supported by trusted advisors like The Adept Traveler, you can navigate the diverse Caribbean landscape, embracing each moment of discovery with excitement and peace of mind. Together, let's celebrate the spirit of travel and inclusivity, one journey at a time.

The Future of LGBTQ Travel in the Caribbean

The world is continually evolving, and with it, attitudes towards LGBTQ rights are also shifting. In this final chapter, we explore the future of LGBTQ Travel in the Caribbean , highlighting promising trends, ongoing challenges, and the role travelers and travel agencies can play in fostering a more inclusive travel landscape.

Encouraging Trends in the Caribbean

Despite certain challenges, there are encouraging signs of progress for LGBTQ Travel in the Caribbean . Some nations, like Curacao and Puerto Rico , are proactively welcoming LGBTQ tourists, demonstrating the Caribbean's potential for inclusivity and acceptance.

There is a growing awareness and increasing advocacy for LGBTQ rights across many Caribbean islands. Public attitudes are gradually shifting, with younger generations leading the charge towards more acceptance and understanding. Festivals, like St. Croix's Pride Parade and the Curacao Pride, are becoming increasingly prominent, celebrating diversity and inclusivity in the Caribbean.

While progress might be slow in certain areas, these trends highlight the positive steps being taken towards a more inclusive Caribbean , offering hope for the future of LGBTQ Travel in the region.

Ongoing Challenges and the Path Ahead

Despite the positive trends, challenges persist for LGBTQ Travel in the Caribbean . Issues like societal stigma, discriminatory laws, and unequal rights remain prevalent in some parts of the region.

However, these challenges do not signal an end to LGBTQ Travel in the Caribbean but rather highlight the need for continued advocacy and informed traveling. By staying informed, respecting local norms, and promoting inclusivity, travelers can contribute to positive change.

The path ahead is one of continued progress and engagement. Advocacy groups, locals, and international travelers alike must continue to engage in constructive dialogues, promoting acceptance and equality in the Caribbean .

The Role of Travel Agencies in Promoting Inclusivity

Travel agencies like The Adept Traveler play a crucial role in fostering a more inclusive travel landscape. By providing accurate, updated information on LGBTQ-friendly destinations, advising on cultural norms and safety precautions, and offering support throughout the journey, travel agencies ensure that LGBTQ travelers can explore the world confidently and securely.

Furthermore, by promoting LGBTQ-friendly destinations, travel agencies can help drive tourism revenue towards places that support and respect LGBTQ rights. This can encourage other destinations to adopt more inclusive policies, creating a virtuous cycle of progress and inclusivity.

The Power of Informed and Responsible Travel

As an LGBTQ traveler, you have the power to promote acceptance and foster change. By choosing to travel to the Caribbean , you contribute to the region's tourism industry, encouraging further progress and understanding.

However, this comes with a responsibility to travel informed and respectfully. Understanding local norms, staying updated on safety and legal issues, and being a respectful visitor can significantly impact the communities you visit.

Practical Advice for LGBTQ Travel in the Caribbean

Having covered the trends, challenges, and outlook for LGBTQ Travel in the Caribbean , this final chapter provides practical advice for planning a safe, enjoyable, and culturally sensitive trip. This includes guidance on choosing accommodations, respecting local customs, using travel resources, and leveraging the services of a trusted travel agency like The Adept Traveler.

Choosing LGBTQ-friendly Accommodations

As an essential aspect of travel planning, choosing the right accommodation can greatly influence your Caribbean experience. Many hotels and resorts in the Caribbean are LGBTQ-friendly, ensuring a welcoming environment for all guests.

Look for accommodations that actively promote inclusivity, with policies in place to ensure the safety and comfort of LGBTQ guests. These might include non-discrimination policies, diversity training for staff, and engagement with local LGBTQ communities.

Respecting Local Customs and Norms

While the Caribbean is a diverse region, some cultural norms and values can be more conservative. LGBTQ travelers should be mindful of local customs and norms, maintaining a respectful attitude throughout their journey.

This might involve avoiding public displays of affection, dressing modestly, or respecting religious beliefs and practices. These measures not only ensure your safety but also help foster mutual respect and understanding between visitors and locals.

Leveraging Travel Resources and Support

The wealth of resources available online can be invaluable for LGBTQ travelers. These include travel blogs, forums, and social media groups where you can get firsthand insights from fellow travelers.

Additionally, organizations like the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) offer useful information and resources for LGBTQ travelers, including a directory of LGBTQ-friendly businesses around the world.

Trusting in the Expertise of a Reliable Travel Advisor

Leaving a Positive Impact

As travelers, we have the opportunity to leave a positive impact on the destinations we visit. This could mean supporting local businesses, respecting the environment, or promoting cultural exchange.

For LGBTQ travelers, this also includes advocating for LGBTQ rights and acceptance. By traveling respectfully and sharing your positive experiences, you can contribute to the ongoing progress towards a more inclusive Caribbean .

While the Caribbean offers diverse experiences and a stunning natural landscape, it also presents unique challenges for LGBTQ travelers. However, with the right information, precautions, and support from a reliable Travel Advisor like The Adept Traveler, your Caribbean adventure can be a memorable and rewarding experience. Here's to safe, enjoyable, and inclusive travels!

Gay St. Croix, USVI

-------------------------------------

The largest of the United States Virgin Islands, St. Croix is 82 square miles of green fringed by endless white beaches. Of the string of islands belonging to the US, St. Croix is neither the most cosmopolitan (that distinction goes to St Thomas) nor the most unspoiled (St John is mostly a national park), but for many visitors it is the best of both worlds. In 1493 Columbus named these islands Santa Ursula y las Once Mil Vírgenes (Saint Ursula and 11,000 Virgins) -- later shortened to Las Vírgenes, now the British and US Virgins. Santa Cruz was then, and still is, the island's name in Spanish.

St. Croix is the least visited of the three major American islands, which is part of its draw. There are few sprawling resorts, meaning most of the accommodations are intimate places where the staff gets to know you by name. It doesn't have rainbow flags on every business, but it does offer a friendly welcome to visitors of all sexual orientations, and is still one of the most gay-friendly places in the Caribbean.

The island's two major towns are named after Danish kings: Christiansted and Frederiksted. Denmark ruled here for almost two centuries, between buying the island from the French in 1733, and selling it in 1917 to the US --along with St Thomas and St John. The other two had been Danish even longer, from 1672. Each island has a distinct personality, so many visitors try to get a taste of each. The sights range from rum distilleries, to the ruins of plantation houses, to nature preserves --both on land and underwater.

There are beautiful beaches all over St Croix, but one of the most popular is Dorscht Beach in Frederiksted, with crystalline water, small waves and unbelievable sunset views. You're likely to run into other gay travelers here too. The East End Marine Park Management Zone, from Point Udall on both the north and south coasts, extends for some miles (to Green Cay on the northside). It includes a Wildlife Preserve, and no fishing zones, but also two recreational areas at Teague and Grapetree Bays for snorkeling, boating and catch-and-release fishing (with permit). Dive sites are scattered all along the north coast from Christiansted Harbor, to the west, all the way down to Fredericksted.

Getting here

Located 13 miles from Christiansted, Henry E Rholsen Airport is the main gateway to St. Croix. Although there are a few direct flights from the US, most require a connection in Miami, St Thomas or San Juan, Puerto Rico. US citizens do not need a passport on arrival from the American mainland. Cars may be rented at the airport, or waiting taxis will take you to your hotel for $15-24. Fares are posted inside each cab. Vitran bus sevice to Christiansted or Frederiksted is just $1, but service is infrequent.

Seaborne Airlines  flies seaplanes , with water take-offs and landings, between the harbors of Christiansted, St Croix, and Charlotte Amale, St Thomas. Downtown-convenient, the close-up views of land and sea are great from low-altitudes. They also offer daily flights to/from St. Thomas as well as to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from St. Croix’s Henry E. Rohlsen Airport. From their San Juan, Puerto Rico hub they offer services to St. Thomas, Tortola, Anguila, Sint Maartin, Antigua, St Kitts, Nevis, Dominica and the Dominican Republic.

For daily ferry service between Charlotte Amalie and Christiansted, see VI Now schedules. They also connect the islands of St John, Tortola, Vigin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke from St Thomas. The Road Town Fast Ferry has service between Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas, and Road Town, Tortola, along with other British Virgin Island destinations.

During the September to May cruise season, Frederiksted Pier receives Celebrity , Holland America Norwegian and Royal Caribbean cruise ships arriving at St Croix, and duty free allowances are generous. Taxis will get you to Christiansted and there are island tours on offer. Check with your cruise line or see St Croix Tourism/Cruise.

Getting around

Unlike many nearby islands, much of St. Croix is relatively flat. It even has a four-lane highway that makes cross-island jaunts a breeze if you have a rental car. Remember that cars drive on the left side of the road, as in Britain and Australia (and the BVI) - but most cars have American-side steering wheels, making passing tricky on back roads.

There is Vitran bus sevice every two hours between the two towns between 5:30am and 9pm daily except Sunday (with no service), with stops at the Golden Rock, Sunny Isle , and La Reine shops, along with St. George Botanical Garden and Whim Plantation . There are also airport links. See VINow for travel information. The 2019 taxi fare between the two main towns is $24.

Olympic Rent-a-Car and Judi of Croix are gay-friendly local car rental companies. If you plan to stay in one of the towns, a rental car is not a necessity. But using taxis to get around can wind up being very pricey.

Christiansted : on the northern coast, dominated by a huge yellow fort dating from the 18th century. It's not the oldest building, however. The original post office and town hall were built in the century before Danish times.

Frederiksted : the second-largest town is less commercially busy, but also has a fort, and plantations dating from when the island was covered with sugarcane fields. There are a couple of interesting museums and a waterfront park where you can join the locals for a late-afternoon stroll. Beautiful beaches are nearby, as well as windy forested highland roads just to the north.

There are plenty of places to get away from the crowds, but a favorite is Buck Island . The beaches of this off-island are lovely, but don't miss the chance to snorkel among the rocky coral populated by huge schools of colorful fish. Most charter companies make their way to this nature preserve, located about five miles north of St. Croix. Big Beard's , and Caribbean Sea Adventures , are two popular options. If you're into scuba diving, there are plenty of eye-popping dive sites just off the coast. St Croix Ultimate Bluewater Adventures  is a gay-friendly company. If you'd rather stay on top of the water, sea kayaking is a great way to explore the Salt River , the spot where Christopher Columbus first set foot in the New World. St. Croix Kayak takes you on guided tours through the Salt River Bay National Historic Park and its brilliant green mangrove forests. Gecko's has ATV tours of the hilly rainforest region of the West End.

Media and resources

The Virgin Islands Daily News is the local paper. St Croix Tourism , GoToStCroix , St Croix Source , St Croix This Week and Visit USVI are useful general information websites with activities, and listinggs of businesses and events.

Things To Do In St Croix is another helpful website with things to do and places to stay.

For map locations and website links to the businesses below, and more, see our gay Cruzan listings pages.

Currency and Money

St. Croix is part of the US Virgin Islands, so the American dollar is used here. Bank ATMs accept major credit cards and networks, but may accept only 4-digit pins, so check with your home bank before leaving. Scotiabank and Banco Popular are the main international banks.

My Queer Family Was Out and Proud on a Tiny Caribbean Island

What happens when luxury travelers show up as their full queer selves in places that don’t condone homosexuality.

A beach view of Barnes Bay in Anguilla

On the Caribbean island of Anguilla, gay sex has been decriminalized since 2000. Does that mean that LGBTQ travelers are welcome?

Sometimes I like to think of travel as a form of queer activism. Admittedly, I mostly travel for selfish reasons. I want adventure. I want to be spoiled at a nice hotel. I want to eat exciting food and explore beautiful vistas. But at the same time, I like to think that when I travel I’m also doing something good for others. Specifically, when I travel to places that aren’t historically LGBTQ accepting, I try to leave a little bit of my gayness behind. For instance, if you’ve been to the Caribbean island Anguilla recently and noticed it was a smidge gayer than in the past, that’s my doing. You’re welcome.

I came of age politically in the United States during the era of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”—the official military policy, ushered in by President Bill Clinton, that said queer people could be in the military as long as no one knew they were queer. In practice, that oppressive construct reinforced the radicalism of queer visibility—that being openly gay, lesbian, bisexual, and/or transgender was a world-changing act of not only self-expression but also transformation of the culture and institutions around you.

So where does the small island of Anguilla come into this? Well, Anguilla is one of the few islands in the Caribbean where gay sex isn’t a crime; Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory and, along with islands such as Bermuda and the British Virgin Islands, was ordered by the British government to decriminalize gay sex in 2000. And yet because of that history, because it wasn’t a choice the island made affirmatively on its own but was foisted upon it, inextricably intertwined with a legacy of other colonial impositions, Anguilla’s relationship to queerness isn’t exactly out and proud.

It could be, as one queer travel website points out , that Anguilla’s gay scene is muted because, with only 15,000 residents, there simply aren’t enough people on the island to have much of a scene of any kind. But the way one local talked to me about gayness in Anguilla—as something some people do and other people know about but none of them discuss—reminded me of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Not quite acceptance, but not outright hostility either. More like closeted homophobia.

This, of course, had the effect of making me want to be extra gay all over Anguilla. No one asked, but I told. Both because it’s hard for me not to be visibly gay, as a butch mom traveling with my partner and daughter, but also because Anguilla feels friendly, it’s legally permitted, and perhaps most important, I have the extra security of privilege.

I can prance around holding my partner’s hand in the safety of the Four Seasons resort because we can afford to stay there—and the property, like some other luxury spots on the island, is a member of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association. That kind of proactive welcome mat is an important comfort. It’s also worth noting that we’re white, which comes with its own privileges on the Caribbean islands. But also, on vacation or as a foreigner anywhere, wealth is often the identity that counts the most. I noticed this with the loud straight men smoking cigars by the beach and recklessly tossing a tennis ball around a crowded swimming pool. As long as their credit cards cleared, no one gave them a hard time either. Gayness in Anguilla might whisper but money shouts.

The author, her teenage daughter, and her partner on the beach in Anguilla

The author and her family after a few spiny lobsters.

One afternoon, my teenage daughter and I went to Sandy Island , an appropriately named tiny slip of sand floating off Anguilla’s coast with an eponymous beach-shack restaurant and a private beach available to those who shell out for lunch. Anguilla has a unique looking and tasting spiny lobster, which Sandy Island served grilled with a curry butter on the side. It was one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten, made all the better by having my feet in the sand. Me in my trucker hat and men’s swimming costume, my teenage daughter calling me mom while wearing a piece of thread she calls a bikini. A queer family for all to see.

We were welcome to temporarily access this delicious slice of paradise—but, I thought to myself, access isn’t necessarily the same thing as inclusion. Buying a seat at the table isn’t the same thing as being given a seat at the table. And an outsider gaining temporary access isn’t the same thing as an equitable, inclusive society for everyone in a community.

There’s a question that always nags at me in these moments, whether I’m bobbing in the ocean or eating my fifth spiny lobster. Is walking down the beach holding my partner’s hand, looking extremely gay in my swim trunks—is this a radical act of queer visibility? Or is it neo-imperialism? I’ve been schooled by practitioners of ethical tourism to respect local culture and practices. But of course I don’t respect explicit anti-gay laws or even a tacit “Don’t Act, Don’t Tell” culture. Does that in some way make me a would-be colonizer, trying to impose my norms and values? Or in a world where there are absolute rights and wrongs, are luxury Western queer travelers paying it forward by showing up and being our full, big gay selves—maybe helping the world become more equitable in some way?

Is walking down the beach holding my partner’s hand, looking extremely gay in my swim trunks—is this a radical act of queer visibility?

Two relevant things happened during my last day in Anguilla. First, I talked with a hotel manager who told me about expat friends of his, one of whom has a job at another hotel but his husband can’t get immigration papers because Anguilla doesn’t recognize their marriage. And then later that night, as I sat by the Four Seasons’ expansive open-air bar overlooking the sunset, I saw a same-sex couple who, perhaps because they were younger and more flexible, were even more intertwined than my partner and I. What I saw was one couple enjoying the relative freedom of Anguilla in a luxury hotel versus a man who lived and worked on the island being stifled by it.

Is Anguilla perfect? No. Are gay luxury travelers perfect? No. Everyone has room for improvement. Ethical tensions are like spiny lobster—better served with a stiff rum punch.

As I walked along the Barnes Bay beach one afternoon, there were more sea shells dotting the ground than the days before, the product of some unusually rough ocean waters. I didn’t take any. They were lovely, but they belong to the beach and the ocean. Like so much of the local culture and community, meant to be enjoyed and respected. But I did leave those hints of my gayness, unasked for but still spoken in words and otherwise, imprints of the just, inclusive, and open world I believe we all deserve. Maybe making it easier, someday, somehow, for other queers to come out of their shells. If that’s imperialist luxury queer travel, I can live with that—especially if I’m helping others become more free.

Galapagos Gay Cruise

The wondrous archipelago made famous by charles darwin awaits..

Experience Mother Nature at her most extra as you glide through the Galápagos Islands on this boutique cruise. Things start in Quito, the second-highest capital city in the world. A walking tour is the perfect introduction before we head out of town to see The Equator. Then we fly off the mainland and board a yacht to follow Charles Darwin’s trail of discovery. These islands went untouched by civilization for thousands of years and developed exceptional ecosystems. It’s basically Paradise, and the animals are completely comfortable around (or totally indifferent to) the curious tourists. Our Galápagos Gay Cruise also features plenty of snorkelling to immerse you in the marine life. We’ll finish things off with a short flight to Guayaquil on the mainland.

gay travel british virgin islands

Hola! Welcome to Ecuador, the second-highest capital in the world. After a 8AM Welcome Meeting we’ve planned a full-day city tour including La Compañia de Jesus, the most beautiful church in the Americas, and Calle La Ronda, Quito’s oldest street. Then we’re off to the Equator museum where you’ll get a keen sense of what it means to be equidistant from the world’s two poles. A Welcome Dinner ends our day, but officially starts the holiday.  Please note: Given the city’s high altitude consider arriving the day before, so your body can adjust to the thinner air.

Today we fly to the Galapagos Islands and board the Natural Paradise, our home for the next week. This is mainly a travel day, but in the afternoon we explore Kicker Rock. This striking rock formation is located a couple hours off the western shore of San Cristobal Island. Jutting out of the water, the rocks stand vertically at hundreds of feet above the ocean divided by a small channel. Although there are no landing areas, kayaking and dinghy rides allow us to spot a variety of marine life such as manta rays, hammerhead sharks and frigate birds.

This morning we visit North Seymour with a chance to see Galapagos sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and magnificent frigate birds which are abundant on this island. North Seymour was formed by a series of submarine lava flows containing layers of sediment that were uplifted by tectonic activity. In the afternoon we head to South Plaza, a small island with steep cliffs that was formed by rising lava and is now covered by Opuntia cacti. It is also home to one of the largest sea lion colonies as well as colourful yellow and red land iguanas.

Today we get our first chance at snorkeling to explore the incredible marine life of Rabida Island. We’ll also visit the famous maroon/red sand beach and take an easy hike up to a spectacular viewpoint. Later in the afternoon it’s onwards to Bartholomew Island where the famous Pinnacle Rock is found. Bartholomew consists of an extinct volcano with a variety of red, orange, black and even green volcanic formations. We will take a trail of stairs to the summit of the volcano (about 30 or 40 minutes) where we will enjoy one of the best views of the islands! We’ll also visit a small, beautiful beach which is another perfect spot for snorkeling, if you’re lucky you may even see and swim with Galapagos penguins.

This morning we’ll visit Sullivan Bay located in the southeast part of Santiago, an area known for its small volcanoes formed by lava flows. Later we head to the visitor’s centre at Dragon Hill and take a short walk along the rocky beach and a 1.5km/0.9mi trail. While exploring we’ll keep our eye out for iguanas and flamingos.

We start the day in the highlands of Santa Cruz which in contrast to the lower part of the islands is a deep green due to the lush forest made up of Scalesia trees. While here we’ll explore the lava tunnels which are over half a mile long. After a satisfying lunch we’ll visit the Twin Craters, two formations created by the collapse of surface material in underground fissures and chambers. Next we’re off to “Fausto Llerena” Tortoise Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity. The tortoises range from 3-inches (new hatchlings) to 4-feet long adults. You may also have some time to connect with civilization and connect to WiFi in a local cafe in town, or just enjoy the remote natural beauty that surrounds you!

Today is dedicated to some easy to moderate walking and hiking around Genovesa Island. Our first stop will take us up El Barranco, also known as Prince Phillip’s Steps, a steep, rocky path that leads up a high cliff rock face and a marvelous view. This site is home to red-footed boobies, short-eared owls, Galapagos storm petrelsand Galapagos doves. Later we visit the white-sand coral beach of Darwin Bay which includes a short trail that winds through mangroves filled with land birds. Look out for Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls, which can easily be spotted here. Further down the path we’ll find tidal pools where sea lions swim playfully. Those who wish will also have the opportunity for a snorkel.

Today we have the entire day to experience multiple snorkeling spots on Santiago Island. In Espumilla Beach, marine iguanas lounge and the Sally Lightfoot crabs attract the hunting herons performing the dance of predator and prey right before your eyes. While snorkeling you could come face to face with an octopus, moray eel, shark and a variety of other species of tropical fish. Later we visit Buccaneer Cove which is a testament to the fact that Santiago Island was once a refuge for British buccaneers who would anchor in the protected bay to make repairs and stock up on tortoise meat. Finally, we head to Egas Port, also known as James Bay, home to the curious Galapagos hawks and quick-footed Galapagos lava lizards. The trail leads to the coastline with gorgeous tide pools and grottos full of fauna. Here the Galapagos fur seals bathe in the sun and this is also a great snorkeling site.

We’ve planned an early start for our final day on the Galapagos. We’re off to Las Bachas, named after the barges abandoned by the American Navy in the 1940s. The sandy white beaches are a nesting site for the Pacific green turtle with marine iguanas commonly seen. The sand here is particularly white and soft, made of decomposed coral. A lagoon near the beach is home to whimbrels and great blue herons. Sadly our cruise has come to an end, we bid the Natural Paradise and her crew farewell and fly to Guayaquil for our Farewell Dinner.

As the last day of our tour no activities are planned. Please confirm departure transfers with your Out Adventures Host, and safe travels home.

LGBT INFO FOR Ecuador

Important information, examples of accommodations, ship details, photos from this adventure.

Of all the trips/tours I have done, this has been the BEST so far!

Steve & Jim

We loved the attention to detail that the team followed to ensure everyone had a great time. This is a different kind of gay travel than traditional gay cruises we’ve done before. A much smaller group, and much more physical activities. We weren’t sure we’d be able to keep up, but it turned out to be fine. We had lots of opportunities for rest breaks and all activities were optional. It was challenging, but great fun.

David & Jim

A unique once-in-a-lifetime trip to one of the relatively few places on Earth left unscathed by humans. The trip provided the right balance between group activities and downtime. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and personable, and there was a good mix of activities over many islands. The ship was well-staffed, and the food was good. It was a thoroughly enjoyable trip, and our host ensured everyone was well taken care of

Tim B & Joe D

Sorry you missed it, phenomenal destination and host/guides were attentive to guests needs and wants!

Perfectly well planned and executed!

Incredible experience that perfectly balanced action-packed excursions with relaxing camaraderie.

Very organized… our trip leaders were extremely attentive to individual needs and addressed them.

The destination was spectacular but being able to be there with a great group of men on an extraordinarily well-planned and coordinated adventure made it even more wonderful.

Out Adventures does an amazing job of bringing together a terrific itinerary with a great group of fellow travellers. It was amazing how much we were able to see and do while still having a good amount of time to kick back, relax, and take it all in!

Great trip, people and places. Well organized, relaxed, fun.

Out Adventures’ gay Galápagos cruise exceeded all of my expectations. Every day is full of activities and the size of the group ensures you fully experience all that the islands have to offer. Where else can you be snorkeling with sea lions, turtles, rays and sharks then hiking along to see iguanas, boobies, and giant tortoises on the same day? I highly recommend this experience to everyone!

After 6 years, Galápagos is still the top of the list of the dozen out adventures trips I’ve taken. The diversity of the animals is amazing, but snorkeling with Galapagos and hammerhead sharks that were 30 feet below will always remain a thrilling memory.

Absolutely astonishing once-in-a-lifetime experience. Unbelievable encounters with nature, birds, animals and marine species. Fantastic ship with a fabulous crew and a wonderful group of fellow travelers. A 15 out of 10!
