Children under 12: SFr. 1.50. Towering over the Old Town in the heart of the city, Saint Peter's Cathedral is Geneva's oldest and most impressive architectural treasure. The Cathedral was began in 1160 and took over 400 years to complete, suffering numerous makeovers and fires throughout the years. The north tower offers incredible panoramic views of the city, while the basement houses an Archaeological Museum chronicling the excavation of artifacts found beneath the Cathedral, some dating back as far as 350 AD.

The Old Town Geneva's ancient Old Town is a maze of sloping cobblestone streets and alleyways filled with cafes, boutiques and historical landmarks at every turn. A former Roman marketplace, the Bourg-de-Four is the oldest public square in Geneva and remains a hub of activity surrounded by bistros, terraces, bars and other popular meeting spots. The 15th century Hotel De Ville located along Rue de l'Hotel-de-Ville still serves as the seat of government in Geneva and is the site of many political milestones including the first convening of the Geneva Convention in 1864 and the founding of the League of Nations in 1920. Across the street, the Old Arsenal is a former battery, now home to a 1949 mosaic by Alexandre Cingria depicting Caesar's arrival in the city 58 BC. Finally, The Treille Promenade on the south side of the Old Town was once an artillery post and today offers beautiful views of the city from atop the towns last remaining rampart wall.

Russian Church Location: Rue Toepffer The unexpected Russian Church pierces the skies near the old town with its flaming gilded cupolas and golden spires, offering a unique contrast to the predominantly French and medieval architecture which dominates the rest of the city. The church was completed in 1866 by Russian expatriates living in Geneva with funding from the sister-in-law to Tsar Alexander 1 st. The Byzantine styled exterior and opulent interior, filled with orthodox icons, is an inspiring treat.

High class cafes and restaurants are also on hand to cater to the theater crowds.

The cemetery is filled with interesting gravestones dating back to 1482.

Carouge Just over L'Arve River, the neighboring town of Carouge is a Mediterranean style hamlet modeled after the city of Nice in France. The former trading town is today commonly referred to as the ‘Greenwich Village of Geneva’ for its many boutiques and studios where artisans and craftsmen of every ilk can be observed plying their trade. The bohemian vibe carries on into the night in Carouges’ many jazz and night clubs.

14 Unmissable Things To Do In Geneva: History, Culture, Food, and More

things to do geneva

As the second largest city in Switzerland, Geneva attracts countless tourists who want to stay in a lakeside town with a rich history, fabulous nightlife, and countless museums. It’s the city for everyone, whether you’re into parties, fashion, food, history, culture, adventure sports, or science.

Beautiful views of Lake Geneva, some of Switzerland’s best museums, luxury shopping, and an incredibly rich history are just some of the highlights of a trip to Geneva. Keep reading if you need help planning your trip to this wonderful city, because this detailed guide to top things to do in Geneva covers everything you might need to plan your stay!

Table of Contents

Explore Lake Geneva

The Flower Clock, Geneva

This fabulous Swiss city is best known for its namesake lake, so kick off your visit with a thorough exploration of all the best lakeside attractions. My favorite is by far Jardin Anglais with its stunning flower clock and fabulous Lake Geneva views.

The garden is best explored in spring and summer when the countless flowers are in full bloom, plus it also boasts sculptures and fountains. The next best attraction in the city is Jet d’Eau . The iconic fountain in the lake can be seen from most parts of the city that offer a view of the lake, and it’s one of the most famous landmarks in Geneva. It’s possible to walk along the pier all the way to the fountain, although I wouldn’t want to get extremely close to the jet because of the spray.

If you’re staying in the city in the summer and need a break from the heat, Bains des Pâquis is the place to be. The public bath is Geneva’s most popular beach with loads of things to do in addition to swimming, including an artificial rock climbing course in the middle of the lake.

Finally, a casual stroll along the lake shore is perfect for glimpsing all the boats moored at Geneva’s ports. Follow the lakeside promenade from Quai du Mont Blanc to Parc Mon Repos for an easy, 15-minute walk starring boats, sculptures, and fabulous lake and mountain views.

Old Town Geneva

geneva

A walking tour of a city’s old town is usually one of the first things you should do whenever you arrive in a new city. You can do your own walking tour of Geneva , or book one of dozens of different guided tours that focus on different aspects of city attractions. You’ve got loads of options, and it should be pretty easy to find a tour that covers all the things that interest you the most.

Place du Bourg-de-Four is the oldest public square in Geneva, and it should be included in every proper tour of the city. There isn’t that much to do here, but at the very least you’ll make a stop at the square and learn a little bit about its history and importance for the city. If you’re touring Geneva on your own, this is a great destination for a quick coffee break.

St Pierre Cathedral Geneva

St. Pierre Cathedral is another important landmark in the city, which should be included in most tours. It is the adopted home of John Calvin, the leader of the Protestant Reformation, and probably the most famous church in the city. Admission to the cathedral is free, and it’s absolutely worth it to go inside and see all the wonderful art.

While you’re walking through the old town of Geneva and exploring all the different alleys, look for signs of secret passages and tunnels. The most famous one is Passage de Monetier (near the Museum of Protestant Reformation), but it’s open to the public only during the Fête de l’Escalade.

Finally, don’t miss out on Hotel de Ville . The 15th-century building used to house the Geneva City Hall, but today it “only” houses the cantonal government. The first Geneva Convention was signed at this very building, and it’s absolutely astonishing to find yourself in such a historical place.

Parc de Bastions & The Reformation Wall

The Reformation Wall in Geneva

Parc de Bastions is a vast public park near the University of Geneva, and it’s the perfect place for catching a break. If you’re tired of walking around the city and need to rest for a little while, head to this gorgeous park and just lie down on the grass.

Once you’re sufficiently rested, I suggest a quick walk through the park. Try to spot all the different sculptures, statues, and fountains – they’re understated but worth the few minutes it takes to find them. You’ll also find large public chess boards here; if you’re a confident player challenge someone to a game, otherwise, you can just observe the local veteran players enjoying themselves.

Head to the park in the direction of the old town and you’ll be able to see another iconic city landmark – The Reformation Wall . The stone monument is more than a hundred years old, and it was built in honor of John Calvin and the other founders of the Protestant Church.

Palace of Nations

Palace of Nations

Situated in the northwestern part of Geneva, Palais des Nations is a complex worth visiting if it’s your first time in the city. The headquarters of the United Nations office are here, along with a couple of amazing museums, stunning sculptures, fabulous views of Lake Geneva, a conservatory, and botanical garden.

There’s plenty to see at this complex, especially if you want to visit both the Museum of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent and the Musée Ariana . I suggest heading here first thing in the morning – after breakfast, of course – and then roaming the grounds until you’ve explored as much as possible. There are a few cafes and restaurants on the complex grounds, so you don’t have to worry about lunch.

Geneva Botanical Garden

Geneva Botanical Gardens

Geneva Botanical Gardens are situated just below Parc de l’Ariana, so you can easily visit both attractions in a single day. The botanical garden complex is quite big and features a conservatory, a greenhouse, an animal park, and a zen garden.

You’ll find all sorts of plants, trees, and flowers here, including many that wouldn’t stand a chance of surviving in the rough Swiss climate. Palm, trees, cacti, and orchids are just some of the rare and beautiful plants you can expect to find here.

The animal park is part of the largest botanical gardens complex, and it features flamingos, goats, peacocks, and loads of other animals. The entire place is absolutely wonderful and a great destination for travelers who want a quick break from the city crowds, but don’t necessarily want to travel too far outside Geneva.

Carouge, Geneva

Carouge is a small hamlet just 15 minutes away from central Geneva by train, and it’s the perfect place to go if you need a change of scenery for a couple of hours. The hamlet mostly attracts artisans and craftsmen, so it’s got a surprising number of galleries, theaters, and boutiques for such a small place.

Artists, craftsmen, and art lovers should definitely try to fit a quick visit to Carouge in their itinerary. Or even better, you could stay here during your trip and save money on accommodation, while being no more than 15 minutes away from the heart of Geneva!

Museums to Visit

Art and History Museum in Geneva

Geneva is home to so many museums that I had a very tough time narrowing the list of best ones to visit to just seven, most of which are included in the Geneva City Pass . By far the best one, in my opinion, is the Patek Philippe Museum , and that’s because you can’t see anything like this anywhere else. The museum spans three floors of exhibits and it covers nearly 500 years of watchmaking history with extravagant, unique timepieces.

The Art and History Museum Geneva (Musée d’Art et d’Histoire) is another must-visit. It’s the largest museum in the city with exhibits that cover everything from prehistoric to modern times. Best of all, the museum is free to enter, and you can see most of its exhibits without spending a dime. And if you like this museum, stop by the Natural History Museum as well.

Maison Tavel is a local history museum in the historic center of Geneva, and it’s the best place for travelers who are genuinely interested in the history of Geneva and the local culture and traditions. Spanning six floors, Maison Tavel offers insight into the lives of the locals over the centuries, with miniature models, period furnishings, and pieces of art.

The International Museum of the Reformation is right next to Tavel House, so since you’re already in the area… It’s a very interesting museum with exhibits on the Reformation, and it’s situated in an 18th-century mansion. But it’s not a museum for everyone because of the religious themes.

CERN

When you need a break from the crowds of central Geneva, head to Parc Ariana. There you will find two excellent museums – the Ariana Museum with exhibits on glass and ceramics, and the International Museum of the Red Cross and Red Crescent which details the history and importance of these two international organizations. The two museums are just minutes away from one another and can be toured in a single afternoon.

Finally, you can’t travel all the way to Geneva and not visit CERN . Well, I couldn’t, which is why I have to include it in this guide. It might not be an attraction for everyone, but if you’re even remotely interested in engineering and physics, a guided tour of the research center is absolutely worth the time and effort it takes to get there.

Shopping center in Geneva

Geneva is a great destination for shopping, whether you’re looking for bargains or prefer to spend your money at luxury shops. There’s something for everyone in this city, and Rue de Rhone is where you will find most of the best shops in Geneva. The shopping street runs parallel to the lake shore and it houses dozens of boutiques, from Boucheron to Zara.

Granted, Rue de Rhone is mostly home to high-end and luxury boutiques, so not the best destination for shoppers without thousands to spend. Rue du Marche and Rue de la Croix-d’Or , both of which run parallel to Rue de Rhone, are both better for more affordable shopping opportunities with shops like Footlocker, H&M, Bershka, and countless others.

Finally, if you’re on the prowl for the absolute best deals possible, head to the Plainpalais Flea Market . Here you’ll find everything from antique furniture to military uniforms, and it’s honestly the best place for cheap shopping in Geneva. Just make sure you have cash on hand because most vendors don’t take cards. The flea market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays and it’s best to visit first thing in the morning.

Gastronomic Experiences

Faverger Chocolates

I really hope you’re not lactose-intolerant because Switzerland is internationally famous for its cheeses and chocolates. No trip to a Swiss city is complete without at least one chocolate or fondue tour, so plan to spend at least an hour or two overdosing on delicious local treats.

Geneva is one of the best Swiss cities for chocolate tours because of its close proximity to several chocolate factories. If you’re genuinely interested in seeing the workings of a true chocolate factory, plan to visit either the Farvager Chocolate Factory or the Maison Cailler . A walking tour of the best chocolate shops in the heart of Geneva is also a delicious option.

The city is very international, which can be observed in the variety of its restaurants. You’ll find loads of different cuisines in Geneva, from Japanese to Italian, with an excellent selection of authentic Swiss restaurants for those who want to try the traditional local cuisine. Swiss fondue is on the menu at most Geneva restaurants, and it’s one of the dishes you absolutely need to try.

Head to Restaurant Les Armures for possibly the best fondue in Geneva . Bayview at Hotel President offers an excellent fine dining experience, while Auberge de Savièse offers a much cozier atmosphere, reminiscent of a chalet somewhere in the Alps.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Geneva is up there with Zurich as one of the best Swiss cities for people who like to party. It has an excellent nightlife scene , with dozens of bars and clubs that stay open until the early hours of the morning.

On the other hand, Geneva also has quite a few lounges and cocktail clubs with a much more sophisticated atmosphere. Then there are all the theaters and event venues where you can watch a play or attend a concert virtually every night of the week. The Grand Théâtre de Genève is by far the best in the city for performance arts, but it’s certainly not the only one.

My point here is, that whatever your idea of a fun night out might be, you’ll find options in Geneva. Attend an opera, dance at a club until 3 AM, or watch a sports event at a local pub – it’s all possible in this fabulous Swiss city.

Wellness & Relaxation

Bains de Paquis

If at any point you need some rest and relaxation from all the sightseeing you’ve been doing, you can always head to a spa or a wellness center for a couple of hours. There’s absolutely no shortage of these places in Geneva, and they range from wellness centers accessible to everyone to luxury establishments where you’re treated to champagne in between treatments.

Bains des Pâquis is the best accessible option in Geneva. It’s easy to reach by public transport and it’s affordable. The wellness center of the public bath includes a hammam, sauna, and a Turkish bath, with optional massages and yoga classes.

Bain-Bleu Hammam & Spa is a bit farther away from the city center, but still easily accessible by public transport. It’s one of the best spa centers in Geneva, with pools, a hammam, and a wellness area that offers loads of different treatments.

The Nescens Spa is very popular for wellness retreats and it’s the perfect destination for travelers whose idea of vacation includes a lot of pampering. The luxury spa offers everything from vast pools to esthetical procedures, and it’s one of the best establishments of its kind on the shore of Lake Geneva.

Festivals and Events

Festival in Geneva

The Swiss really like their carnivals and festivals. Geneva celebrates a few different festivals every year, and being in a city where they are taking place is a wonderful experience.

Fête de l’Escalade is the largest and most important festival in Geneva. It takes place on December 12th (or the weekend closest to this date), and it celebrates the anniversary of the city’s defense from the attempted conquer by the Catholic Duchy of Savoy. The festival includes concerts, costumes, parades, and lots of food.

Geneva Fête de la Musique is a musical festival that traditionally takes place in early summer. The city’s largest musical festival attracts people from all over the world, thanks to the large variety of concerts that range from classical music to rock and roll.

Outdoor Activities

Vineyard in Geneva

Travelers who prefer to explore off the beaten path will thoroughly enjoy their stay in Geneva. The city is very close to some of Switzerland’s best natural attractions, with easy access to hiking trails, wine-tasting tours, and even ski resorts.

The Geneva Wine Trail is one of the best hikes in the region. It’s the longest vineyard hike in the entire country, and it includes quite a few wine tastings along the way to spice things up. There are a few different iterations of this hike, and it can be completed in the span of four and a half to seven hours.

Cycling through the vineyards is also possible, in case you prefer to get around on wheels. Geneva is a good destination for mountain biking as well, with loads of trails in the city’s vicinity.

On the other hand, if you prefer having fun on the water , you’ll love staying so close to Lake Geneva. There are countless opportunities for kayaking and canoeing , but also rafting if you head closer to the river. Paragliding is also a popular activity in the region, especially in the summer months.

If you happen to visit Geneva in the winter, you’ll be able to enjoy skiing and snowboarding in one of the numerous nearby resorts. There are thousands of kilometers of ski pistes less than an hour and a half outside the city, which include trails that are challenging even for the most experienced skiers.

Chamonix

One of the best things about Geneva is its proximity to other beautiful places in France and Switzerland. Chamonix, the ski resort at the foot of Mont Blanc, is only an hour away from Geneva, and a bus ticket will cost you just 10 CHF. It’s possible to book guided visits to the area, and this is the best option for travelers who don’t want to bother with research and ticket purchases.

Mont Saleve is easily accessible by cable car, and perhaps the best day trip to do from Geneva if you’re into panoramic views. The mountain is in France, and it offers some of the best views of the city of Geneva. The cable car station is at the Le Pas de l’Échelle village, which is just a 40-minute bus ride from central Geneva.

A day trip to Montreux and Chillon castle is different because it includes no trip to mountains, but nonetheless an epic experience. Montreux is a gorgeous town on the shore of Lake Geneva, best known for being Freddie Mercury’s home for a while. Chillon Castle is easily accessible from the town, and it boasts underground vaults, a museum, and stunning lake views. It’s only a 60-minute train ride from Geneva to Montreux.

How to Get to Geneva

train lake geneva

Geneva is connected to all the major cities in Switzerland by trains and buses, so traveling to the city should be very simple. If you’re flying into Geneva airport, you can be in the heart of the city in just 10-15 minutes. There’s a train that will take you from the airport to central Geneva , and it runs every 12 minutes. Best of all, anyone who flies to Geneva airport can get this train ticket for free.

You could also get a taxi from the airport, but I genuinely don’t think it makes sense. Taking the train is quicker, especially during rush hour, not to mention that the train is free and the taxi is usually 35-45 CHF.

You can even take a direct train from Zurich to Geneva , and you’ll arrive at the lakeside city in less than three hours. It will also take you around three hours to travel to Geneva (by train) from Basel, Interlaken, and Lucerne, but just two hours from Bern.

Traveling to the city from other places on the shore of Lake Geneva is much faster because you can also do it by boat. Montreux, Vevey, Lausanne, and Morges are all 30-60 minutes away from the city.

It’s important to note that renting a car and driving to Geneva on your own almost always takes longer than train travel, and that’s in perfect road conditions. Travel by bus is an option if you’re just going to other towns along Lake Geneva or to places in France.

Getting Around The City

Public transport in Geneva

Geneva has a great network of public transport. The city center is easily walkable and you can get to most of the top attractions in the heart of Geneva by walking, but you will need to ride public transport to get to CERN, visit Carouge, or Parc Ariana.

Trains, buses, trams, and even boats are all options for getting around Geneva, and tourists can usually ride them for free. If you book a stay in accommodation that is registered with the Geneva Tourism & Congress board, they should be able to provide you with a Geneva Transport Card for free! It includes all the public transport in the city of Geneva, as well as a ride into town from the airport.

Where to Stay in Geneva

Geneva offers a wide variety of accommodation options, from campsites to five-star luxury hotels. On the upper end, the best hotels include the Four Seasons, the Mandarin Oriental, The Woodward, the Fairmont Grand Hotel Geneva, the Ritz Carlton, and the Beau-Rivage. A night at one of these hotels starts at 500 CHF and can cost more than 1,000 CHF.

Mid-range hotels are the most prevalent in Geneva and are usually 200-400 CHF per night. Hotel Bristol, The Ambassador, Hilton Geneva, Novotel Geneva, and Hôtel Longemalle Genève are all four-star hotels in and around Geneva’s old town.

There are loads of budget hotels in the city as well, just keep in mind that a night in one of them will set you back 100-200 CHF. That’s the price of a one-star hotel in one of the most expensive cities in Switzerland. The best budget hotels in Geneva are Hotel Ibis, Hotel Central, Hôtel St-Gervais, Nash Pratik Hotel, City Hostel Geneva, and Tor Hôtel Genève. It’s worth noting that some of these are closer to the airport than the city center.

Also, consider staying outside central Geneva to save money. Even Carouge is a great option – it’s just 15 minutes from Geneva by tram, and the accommodation options are about half the price of those in Geneva proper.

The ILO left the building in 1975 for its new headquarters. It then hosted the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the library of the Graduate Institute of International Studies (IUHEI) and the Secretariat of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

In 1995, the Centre William Rappard became the headquarters of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum's permanent exhibition "The Humanitarian Adventure" offers visitors a unique opportunity to learn more about the history and current challenges of humanitarian action.

Located next to the ICRC headquarters in Geneva, the Museum reflects on the major challenges of today's world: Defending human dignity, Restoring family links, Reducing natural risks. These three separate areas were developed by renowned architects from different regions of the world.

An interactive chronology also presents 150 years of humanitarian history, and visitors can track Red Cross and Red Crescent operations around the globe. Visitors can also discover temporary exhibitions at the Museum.

A QUICK CITY GUIDE TO GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

Geneva

I recently had an amazing opportunity in July to visit Geneva, Switzerland with the Geneva Tourism Board . Switzerland has always been on my bucket list for many years, so I was really excited to explore it! Geneva is a city that lies at the southern tip of Lake Geneva, surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountains. From Geneva, you can see Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. Here’s a quick city guide to Geneva, Switzerland!

Things to know before your trip:

  • Best time to visit is the summer June-August and December-April for winter activities
  • Free Geneva transport card: when staying in a hotel you will receive a free transport card. Public transportation in Geneva is completely FREE (bus, train, and boats)
  • Geneva Pass can be purchased for 1, 2 or 3 days: it provides special discounts, free entry to attractions and transportation
  • Credit card is widely accepted
  • Many people speak English and French
  • Switzerland is known for fondue and chocolate so eat lots of it!

WHERE TO STAY

Hotel President Wilson is a luxury contemporary hotel with views of the lake and Mont Blanc. Read about my experience here

Explore Geneva’s Old Town – Geneva’s old town has a lot of charm and history. Wander around the cobblestone streets, get lost and visit Saint Peters Cathedral for panoramic views of the city. There are no elevators so be prepared to walk up 157 stairs but the views are worth it!

Genvea

Food Tour & Explore Carouge – There are so many restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream shops and chocolate shops so the best way to try everything is doing a food tour or feel free to wander on your own into the local shops. We had a mini chocolate tour at  Chocolaterie Philippe Pascoët .

Genvea

River Rafting – A fun summer activity in Geneva is going river rafting!! It’s quite an experience if you haven’t done it. The water is quite cold so try not to fall in. I didn’t expect to have so much fun but we had a blast!

Geneva

Fishing on Lake Geneva – Lake Geneva is known for their fresh fish caught in the lake so of course, we went fishing! Perch is a fish that is mostly caught from the lake. This was my first time fishing and we caught plenty of Perch but also this large fish!

Geneva

Picnic in the park – Immerse yourself and feel like a local by having a picnic at the du Parc des Eaux-Vives. With views of the lake, have a relaxing evening at the park. During the summer they have Music in Summer which is a concert that takes place around Geneva.

Geneva

Explore the International District – Explore the UN building, the broken chair, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum

Geneva

Countryside Bike Tour – Take a bike tour with an electric bike along the beautiful countryside

Geneva

Day trip to Yvoire – Geneva borders France so a day trip to Yvoire is a must! It’s situated on the lake and takes less than 1.5 hours to arrive by boat. Yvoire is a small medieval town and one not to be missed. Stop by  Les Jardins du Leman for lunch with views of the castle.

Geneva

Day trip to Mont Blanc – Take a day trip to visit the highest mountain in the Alps. It’s a popular mountain resort of Chamonix where you can ride the cable car to Aiguille du Midi for panoramic views.

Day trip to Montreux – Montreaux is a little over an hour by train or car. Offshore is a stunning medieval island castle, Château de Chillon.

WHERE TO EAT

La Perle Du Lac – What to order: Fish of the day and save room for the dessert cart!

La Perle Du Lac

Alma Restaurant   – What to order: Cocktails are amazing! Guacamole is addicting, empanadas, cheese sticks, everything was delicious!

Alma Restaurant

I truly loved Geneva and would love to re-visit as soon as possible! If you have plans to visit Switzerland I highly suggest spending 4-5 days in Geneva to see everything it has to offer!

The Matterhorn and Switzerland are inseparably linked to each other. The pyramid shaped colossus of a mountain, which is very difficult to climb, is said to be the most-photographed mountain in the world. The Klein-Matterhorn ("Little Matterhorn"), which can be reached via a funicular, lies adjacent to the Matterhorn.

The Rhine Falls

To stand high above Europe's largest waterfall, feeling the roar and vibration of the water over one's entire body - this can be experienced at the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen. By ship one can reach castles, the Rhine Falls Basin and even the mighty rock in the midst of the waterfall.

On the Top of Europe: A visit to the Jungfraujoch puts a jewel in the crown of any visit to Switzerland.

Château de Chillon

Chillon Castle is located on a rock on the banks of Lake Geneva. The water castle is the most visited historic building in Switzerland. For nearly four centuries Chillon was the residence and profitable toll station of the Counts of Savoy.

Creux du Van

"Creux du Van", a natural rock arena of immense proportions, is located at the border of the cantons of Neuenburg and Vaud. Impressive 160 meter high vertical rock faces surround a four kilometer long and over one kilometer wide valley basin.

Aletsch - the Largest Alpine Glacier

Incredibly immense, incredibly beautiful: the Large Aletsch Glacier is the Alps' mightiest ice flow. And the most popular, for it is easily accessible and is ideally situated for extensive hikes, winter sports and special nature excursions.

Swiss Museum of Transportation

Switzerland’s most visited museum showcases the past, present and future of mobility with interactive and varied exhibits. In addition to the museum, unique attractions found nowhere else in Switzerland, such as the film theatre, planetarium, Swiss Chocolate Adventure and Media World, are just waiting to be discovered.

10,000 years ago, 100 billion cubic metres of rock thundered into the valley. Known as the Flims Rockslide, this event created the Ruinaulta, a canyon-like gorge in the Anterior Rhine Valley that can be reached on foot, over water, by train or by bike.

Goodbye to the long winter months – it’s time to welcome the spring. Now it’s time to recharge your batteries, catch the sun’s rays and enjoy the fresh air. Switzerland’s cities are also in full bloom, showcasing spring’s awakening.

City oases in bloom

It is not just nature that awakens in spring – Switzerland’s towns and cities also wake from their winter slumber. Parks and gardens transform the urban centres, invigorating them with life. Roses, tulips and daffodils make this time of year particularly stunning.

Wellness with a clear conscience

Sustainable wellness: As the days start getting shorter, the weather outside gets colder and snow starts to fall, many people are drawn to soothing wellness facilities. 28 Things to Do in Geneva Switzerland

Geneva is located on the westernmost point of Switzerland and actually borders France. It sits on Lake Geneva (also called Lac Léman) and is a diverse city that is full of unique things to do including museums, city views, food tours and so much more. Geneva is perfect to visit year round as each season has its own set of cool attractions. Christmas is an especially great time of the year to visit as the Christmas markets are open and if you’re lucky enough to be visiting around December 12th, you’ll also be able to experience a beautiful festival called L’Escalade that’s unique to Geneva.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

What to do in Geneva

Go on a chocolate tour.

I think many people will agree that any food tour is a good idea but when it comes to a chocolate tour, I think the vote would be unanimously yes. Switzerland offers some of the best chocolate in the world and if you find yourself overwhelmed with the myriad of chocolate shops located in Geneva, then book a chocolate tour with Local Flavours Tours . This 3 hour tour is run by Antonia, a charming tour guide who will give you the most thorough history on chocolate as well as little anecdotes that will leave you smiling. This particular chocolate tour hits about 5 chocolatiers and has you tasting everything from hot chocolate to pastries to truffles. Best of all, you also get to see much of the city during your tour. As mentioned below in the itinerary section, this tour is perfect for 2 days in Geneva.

Things to Do in Geneva Switzerland

Stay at the family owned historic hotel on the lake: Beau Rivage

The Beau Rivage is a five star hotel that overlooks the lake and was established by the Mayer family in 1865. It’s beautifully decorated with period antiques and still manages to preserve some of the original handiwork and architecture. The staff are welcoming and the accommodations perfect that your stay truly feels like a luxurious historical stay. History buffs will enjoy the suites as they are each named after a famous person who stayed there years back (suites are provided with a short bio as well).

If you prefer to stay elsewhere but would still like to experience parts of the Beau Rivage, you can book one or more of several different activities they have available. During winter, they hold a chocolate party every Saturday and Sunday of the month. This includes a chocolate fountain and many other sweets. During this time, the Beau Rivage also offers a pastry class for children.

Things to Do in Geneva Switzerland

Visit the St Pierre Cathedral

This 850+ year old cathedral was initially built by Roman Catholics and later transformed into a Protestant church during the Reformation. It is known as the home church of John Calvin, one of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation. The cathedral has a beautiful pillared entryway with an equally beautiful interior.

Things to Do in Geneva Switzerland

Climb St Peter’s Tower

If you’re visiting the cathedral, you’ll want to add climbing the tower in the church to your list of what to do in Geneva. The city views you’ll see at the top are fantastic and well worth the time and energy spent climbing the 157 steps to the top. Aside from that, getting to the top is a bit of an adventure. You have to climb one tower and then walk across to the other where you’ll climb further up. Once at the top, you’ll find several different angles of the city.

Things to Do in Geneva Switzerland

Attend L’Escalade

This festival is native to Geneva and is a true commemoration of independence. The festival is held around December 11-12 (or the weekend nearest to these dates) and is a fun celebration filled with re-enactments, chocolate, singing and food. I wouldn’t hesitate to plan my trip to Geneva based off this festival as it’s (obviously) held once a year. During the celebration, a secret passageway is opened to the public; walking through you can admire the old walls and the fact that the doors will close on it until next year’s December rolls around.

Things to Do in Geneva Switzerland

Cruise on a lunch boat

This one is for all foodies. Reserve a table on board the “ Savoie ” and enjoy a meal prepared by Philippe Chevrier’s team as well as a trip around Lake Geneva. It’s delicious, scenic and definitely one of the most unique things to do in Geneva.

Things to Do in Geneva Switzerland

Visit Bain Bleu for a real Moroccan hammam experience

This spa might look plain from the outside but once you step through its doors you’ll see why it made this list. First you’ll enjoy the two pools, one inside the building and the other outdoors. Both are modern and incredibly relaxing and best of all, heated. Once you’re finished in the pools, you can begin your hammam portion. Allot 3 hours for the full experience.

Things to Do in Geneva Switzerland

Take a fondue making cooking class

No visit to Switzerland is complete without some cheese fondue. One of Geneva’s traditional restaurants Edelweiss offers cooking classes for learning how make fondue. You can opt for a package that includes dinner if you want to make into a full meal. The fondue from Edelweiss is amazing and makes for a romantic date idea.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

Try raclette

This unique alpine cheese is served melted on a plate of meat and potatoes. It’s a specialty so be sure to look for it on the menu!

Take the tram to Carouge

Carouge is a quaint suburb of Geneva located about 20 minutes by tram from Old Town Geneva. As soon as you walk off the tram, you’ll instantly feel like you’ve stepped into Italy or France as the houses lining the streets are colorful and give off a very different vibe than the rest of Geneva. Carouge is fun for a half day visit.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

Ride the taxi bike

Taxi bikes are a fun way to see the city and get to where you want to go. Thinking about visiting during winter? No worries. The drivers equip each taxi bike with blankets so you’ll be warm as you ride.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

Visit the Patek Philippe Museum

Swiss watches are unparalleled and if you’re a watch connoisseur, you’ll want to visit the Patek Philippe Museum. This museum contains so much history on watches and so many examples that you could easily spend a few hours here. This is a great spot to add to your Geneva things to do list!

Take a watchmaking class

If you love watches but you’re more of a hands on person, then look into a watchmaking class at Initium . You can opt for the half day class where you learn how to put together or take apart the internal workings of a watch or you can choose the full day class where you get to create your own watch from start to finish and customize it according to your preferences.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

Eat at one of Geneva’s Michelin star rated restaurants: Le Chat Botté

If you want to enjoy a special and romantic night out, then reserve a table at Le Chat Botté . This restaurant is part of the Beau Rivage Hotel and is an extraordinary display of artistic flair and exquisite foods. Chef Dominique Gauthier outdoes himself on each dish. One of my favorites was his apple creation, a composite apple made of a sugar exterior and a pureed interior. The dessert looks exactly like an apple.

Things to Do in Geneva Switzerland

Visit the Duke of Brunswick Monument & then enjoy a delicious lunch at the Cottage Cafe

This monument is one of the most iconic places to visit in Geneva and has an interesting history. The Duke of Brunswick willed his wealth to Geneva as long as they created a mausoleum for him overlooking the lake. So the monument was constructed in his honor. Interestingly enough, the Duke died in the Beau Rivage. The Cottage Cafe is located right behind the monument and serves delicious salads with a fun view. I’d highly recommend the vegetarian lasagna as well as the warm goat cheese salad.

Things to Do in Geneva Switzerland

Ride the water taxi

Though considered a means of transportation, the water taxi is a fun mode to take as it’s completely different than any other type of transportation. This taxi is a great way to cross the lake from the newer side of Geneva to Old Town.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

Wander through Vieille Ville aka Old Town

Old Town is a fun maze of small streets and alleyways and a lot of cute shops. This is where a lot Geneva’s charm and life is centered and where most of the amazing restaurants lie. Be sure to walk through Place Bourg du Four.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

Botanical Garden

This garden is located in the International District and houses some fun plants. It’s free entry and a bit off the beaten path and so a great option for a relaxing few hours.

Mont Blanc Bridge

This bridge connects the newer side of town to Vieille Ville. It’s fun to walk through both day and night to gain totally different perspectives and views. During Christmas, you get especially cool views of the other bridges all lit up.

Things to Do in Geneva

Jet D’eau

One of the most famous Geneva points of interest is the Jet D’eau. This water jet is a gigantic fountain that shoots water up to a height of 450 feet. If you are looking to photograph something iconic in Geneva, then look no further than this landmark.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

Bains des Pâquis

While Bain Bleu is an intimate, relaxing and romantic experience, the Bains des Pâquis are great if you’re looking for something more lively and cheap. They offer a great place to swim and hang out and there are restaurants on-site which offer fondue! Tuesdays are a “ladies only” day.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

Parc des Bastions

This famous Geneva park is located outside the old walls and is a fun park to walk through. During Christmastime the entire park is transformed into a Christmas market. However, year round the park serves as a plan to stroll, relax in and even play life-size checkers and chess! Make sure you check out the Reformation Wall.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

Jardin Anglais and the Flower Clock

In true Swiss fashion, Geneva has created the world’s largest flower clock. As its name suggests, this clock is composed of seasonal flowers and rests in the Jardin Anglais. The Flower Clock is prettiest during summer but can be visited year round.

Visit the International District

If you’re staying in the hub of Geneva overlooking the lake, you’ll want to take the tram to see the International District. This is where the statue of Ghandi as well as the Palais des Nations aka the United Nations are located. Across from the UN, is an enormous wooden chair that’s missing a leg. This chair serves as a reminder of the lives lost and money spent on numerous mines located across Europe and is the symbol of Geneva’s efforts towards peace and freedom. Also, this is the area where you’ll find The Red Cross history museum that is now officially named The Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum.

Day trip to Mont Blanc

Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, is only a day trip from Geneva. You can take public transport or a car over to Chamonix (about an hour away). Chamonix is a cute French village located at the base of Mont Blanc. There are several activities you can do including taking a cable car up the mountain, stepping into the void (the glass enclosed space hovering over the mountain) or exploring Chamonix.

Pointe de la Jonction

Pointe de la Jonction is a fascinating spot where the River L’Arve meets with the Rhône River. What makes this place is interesting is the extreme contrast in color between the two rivers. The Rhône is turquoise and incredibly clear while the L’Arve is muddied and brown. *The walk is a bit long so you can opt to take a bus if you prefer.

geneva tourism board

Take the cable car up to Mont Salève

From the city center you can take a short bus trip to the cable car that ultimately takes you to the top of this mountain. From the top of Mont Salève you will get to experience scenic views over Geneva or you can hike or paraglide. The cable car is NOT open during wintertime.

Make your own Swiss army knife

While watchmaking might not be your forte, you might enjoy a class on making your own Swiss army knife with Victorinox . Choose your favorite color and engrave your knife for an even more customized souvenir.

Tips for planning a trip to Geneva

Geneva live pass.

When you travel to Geneva, one of the first things you should buy is the Geneva LIVE Pass . It allows you access to around 30 free Geneva attractions (20 others with a discount) and you can grab a pass for 24, 48 or 72 hours. Cost ranges from 26-45 CHF. Tours include a Geneva Old Town mini train tour, the International Geneva open bus tour, a guided walking tour of Carouge as well as the cable car to Mont Salève, the Mermaid’s cruise, Bains des Pâquis (massages at a discount), pedal boat tours, kayak rental, Patek Philippe Museum, St Peter’s Tower, the Natural History Museum and a handful of other museums. You’ll also receive discounts on Segway, taxi bike and private tours. Also included at a discount is Geneva Mystery and Secret Chamber, games you’ll enjoy with friends or family. As you can see, this pass is 100% worth it and will pay itself off in just a few activities.

Transportation in Geneva

Geneva has some of the best public transportation in Europe and it really can’t be beat. First, Geneva grants an 80 minute pass to anyone arriving at the Geneva airport. This pass grants you access to the trams that will take you into the heart of the city. It not only relieves stress when planning for a visit but it also makes layovers in Geneva extremely convenient and affordable. Second, all visitors get a Geneva Transport Card.

Geneva Transport Card If you’re staying at a hotel or hostel in Geneva, you will receive a transport card which will allow you free access to any kind of public transportation: water taxis, trams and buses. This pass will last you the entire duration of your stay (2 nights = 2 days of transpiration).

Geneva Airport

The Geneva airport is unique in the fact that it lies in two countries, both Switzerland and France. You will arrive on the Swiss side but if you’re renting a car for your visit, be careful as you might actually be renting it from the French side. Access between the two sides is fairly easy, however, it can be a bit tricky at times. Follow the signs and ask questions if you still have trouble.

Geneva Itinerary Samples

Think about adding Geneva to your Europe trip itinerary .

1 Day in Geneva

Day 1 – Check into your hotel, pick up your Geneva Transport Card from the front desk and then walk over to the Duke of Brunswick Monument. If you’re cold, drop into Laduree for a few minutes and grab a drinking chocolate. Next walk over to the dock and take the water taxi over to Old Town. You’ll see the Jet D’eau in the distance and soon enough you’ll arrive on the other side of the lake. Walk through Old Town and find St Peter’s Cathedral. Climb the tower and admire the views over the city.

For lunch, head over to Osteria della Bottega. This cute Italian restaurants serves up homemade pasta (try the ravioli). After lunch, walk over to Parc des Bastions for a quick stroll and then take the tram over to Carouge and explore its many shops and streets.

Spend the evening in Old Town making fondue at Edelweiss (reserve in advance). Take a taxi bike back to your hotel and admire Geneva at night. This completes your 1 day Geneva itinerary.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

2 days in Geneva

Day 2 – Start your day off with a chocolate tour (reserve in advance). Once the tour ends, you’ll be ready for lunch. Walk over to the Cottage Cafe for a light lunch.

After lunch, head to the Jardin Anglais for a relaxing stroll (you’ll be grateful for it after your morning of chocolate). Stop by the Flower Clock and then enjoy a swim or water sports in the lake. If your visit is in winter, opt for a visit to Bain Bleu for a full bath experience.

Relaxed and refreshed, walk the Mont Blanc Bridge over to Old Town and enjoy delicious steak dinner at Chez Philippe (I recommend the crab cakes, filet mignon and Paris Brest for dessert). This completes your 2 day Geneva itinerary.

Things to do in Geneva Switzerland

3 days in Geneva

Day 3 – Begin day 3 of your Geneva itinerary with a day trip to Mont Blanc and Chamonix. Enjoy hiking or skiing (depending on the season you visit) but be sure to come back by dinnertime. You won’t want to miss dinner at the Michelin star restaurant Le Chat Botté.

UN Tourism and Hotelschool The Hague to Drive Innovation in Hospitality

  • 23 Apr 2024

UN Tourism and Hotelschool The Hague, have agreed to partner around the development and execution of pioneering projects in the hospitality industry.

A new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to stimulate innovation and fresh ventures within the hospitality industry, promoting entrepreneurship and education while engaging in open innovation projects that can enhance the tourism industry, with a particular focus on hospitality. Currently, 20% of entrepreneurs of the UN Tourism Network are directly related to hospitality and are the most dynamic projects including a variety of stakeholders of the industry.

Building on the UN Tourism's established innovation network, this agreement will further facilitate connections between startups and potential investors, as well as promote knowledge and skills through joint events, communication channels, and media interactions. This partnership not only underlines a commitment to a more sustainable future for the industry but also signifies a shared commitment to providing inclusive opportunities and memorable global student experiences, demonstrated through Hotelschool The Hague's global Sustainable Hospitality Challenge .

Strong foundations for innovative future

Ms. Natalia Bayona, Executive Director of UN Tourism, expresses: "Unfortunately 90% of startups within the hospitality sector eventually do not succeed. A decent tourism education and knowledge of the hospitality sector is necessary to develop a disruptive and well-functioning product. Through our collaborative efforts, we aspire to alter this trajectory by offering a more robust foundation, fostering invaluable connections, and providing a conducive testbed for emerging startups. Given that technology now permeates 70% of tourism enterprises, it is imperative that these startups are seamlessly integrated into the ecosystem, connected with pertinent stakeholders, and afforded the opportunity to validate their solutions in real-world settings before embarking on a larger scale.

Ms. Regine von Stieglitz, President of the Board of Directors of Hotelschool The Hague says: "At Hotelschool The Hague, we provide our students with the perfect balance of theory, real-world experience and applied research to prepare them for a career in the hospitality industry. We develop leaders who shape our global industry and drive it to give back more than it takes. We are proud to join forces with UN Tourism. We fully embrace their vision to Foster Innovation in the Hospitality Industry. In fact, our Sustainable Hospitality Challenge is a student competition designed to enhance the evolution of sustainable practices in hospitality, aligning seamlessly with the objectives of UN Tourism."

Hotelschool The Hague, founded and funded by the hospitality industry in 1929, provides high-quality education and cutting-edge research in the field of international hospitality management, with an emphasis on the transformation of sustainability and digitalization and on developing students into sought-after hospitality graduates who excel in leadership roles worldwide.
