GTA’s first quarter PPF in Koforidua focuses on financial empowerment for tourism sector

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) convened its first quarter Public and Private Partnership Forum (PPF) in Koforidua , with the theme “Financial Empowerment for the Tourism and Hospitality Sector.” The forum attracted approximately 150 participants, including representatives from various key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Ghana Tourism Federation, Ghana Hotels Association, and financial institutions like Development Bank Ghana and Zenith Bank .

Mr. Mark Okraku Mantey, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, stressed the importance of financial empowerment for sustainable growth in the tourism industry. He emphasized the need to explore alternative funding sources to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) within the sector, highlighting their significant role in innovation, job creation, and community development.

The Chief Executive Officer of GTA, Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, outlined the mandate of the PPPF, which was inaugurated in 2021 under Article 42 of the Tourism Act 2011 (Act 817). He highlighted the forum's role in engaging the private sector in discussions on critical issues affecting the development of the tourism sector.

Mr. Agyeman mentioned that previous PPPF sessions had led to significant initiatives, including the training of approximately 3000 individuals in areas such as service quality, digital marketing, and customer service. Additionally, more than 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed with communities to empower them and develop tourist sites.

However, Mr. Agyeman noted that despite efforts, some policy recommendations from previous forums, such as advocating for a flat tax rate for the private tourism sector, were not included in the recent budget statement read in parliament . Nevertheless, he assured stakeholders that efforts were ongoing to include these agendas in future budget statements.

GTA holds first quarter PPPF in Koforidua to strengthen tourism and hospitality

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has held its first quarter private and public partnership forum (PPF) in Koforidua this year.

The forum, which saw about 150 participants, was themed, “Financial Empowerment for the Tourism and Hospitality Sector.”

Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, GTA, Ghana Tourism Federation, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Hotels Association, Development Bank Ghana, Zenith Bank, the Tourism Society of Ghana, and others.

Addressing the participants, Mr Mark Okraku Mantey, the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, said financial empowerment was the cornerstone of sustainable growth in every industry.

Therefore, he emphasised the necessity of finding other funding sources from which the tourism sector can harness to ensure the sustainability of the sector, especially for small and medium enterprises in the tourism space.

“Small and medium enterprises form the backbone of our economy. They are the agents of innovation, job creation, and community development,” he noted.

Mr Akwasi Agyeman, the Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, said the PPPF was inaugurated in 2021, although it was established under Article 42 of the Tourism Act 2011 (Act 817).

He stated that the PPPF had a mandate to engage the private sector in discussions about significant issues that impacted the country’s tourism sector’s development.

He mentioned that the tourism sector has trained about 3000 people in areas such as service quality, destination management, digital marketing, and customer service, among others.

He said that the training took place due to concerns raised in previous PPPF held to empower individuals in the tourism sector.

Also, he said more than 13 Memorandums of Understanding have been signed with communities to ensure community empowerment, adding, “Through these MoUs, some tourist sites are being developed.”

He disclosed that a policy paper from the last PPPF held in the Western Region has been developed to ensure that taxes and levies are harmonised.

However, Mr Agyeman indicated that the policy paper that advocated for a flat tax rate for the private tourism sector was not featured in the recent budget statement read in parliament.

Therefore, he reassured us that efforts were still underway to include the agenda in the next budget that parliament would read.

GTA urges tourist operators to make facilities attractive to meet demands of patrons

The Eastern Regional office of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has urged operators of tourist sites to develop their sites to be more attractive with the requisite facilities to meet the needs of patrons.

According to the Eastern Regional Deputy Director in-charge of Hospitality of the GTA, Bertha Appeynarh, the region was emerging as a destination for meetings, workshops and conferences, hence the need to make tourist sites more accommodating and attractive.

He, however, said the bad nature of road networks leading to attraction sites coupled with lack of basic facilities such as car parks, good washroom facilities, modern receptive facilities, good layout, art and craft shops and restaurants left much to be desired.

 “We cannot say we are happy about the actual state of care of our tourist attractions sites due to the fact that most of these attractions are underdeveloped and in a bad state of care,” he stated.

He was speaking at an orientation and training workshop on the Tourism (Tourist Sites) Regulations, 2019 (L.I. 2393) in Koforidua last Friday.

The workshop sought to equip industry players with the relevant skills and training needed for quality service delivery in the region. 

It attracted 15 participants including tour operators, personnel from various tourist sites as well as tour and site guides across the region.

Other participants were selected municipal and district chief executives, heads of ministries, departments and agencies as well as regional police and fire commanders. 

In 2019, the L.I. 2393 (tourist sites) was passed to mandate GTA to register, classify, license and regulate the activities of tourist sites.

Mrs Appeynarh said there were many tour agencies which works at providing week-long and weekend adventure and health trips to the public.

She, however, said tourist attraction sites could only get their fair share of the tourist event if they were developed and marketed properly.

“This we know will create jobs, generate income and improve the livelihood of people in the region,” she added.

MrsAppeynarh indicated that the government, through the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture and the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), had over the years aimed to improve the skills of industry players through the provision of quality information, training and effective regulation.

That, she said, had become necessary since tourism industry was mainly service oriented which had to do with a satisfactory tourist experience. 

The acting Director of Operations of the GTA, Ekow Sampson, said, in a bid to promote international and domestic tourism in the country, various tourism campaigns had been initiated to bolster tourism drive.

He mentioned some of the campaigns as “Destination Ghana”, “Share Ghana” and “Experience Ghana”, all of which were targeted at improving tourism sites to the country rake in much foreign exchange and create employment opportunities.

He added that it was in a bid to improve tourist sites that the Tourism (Tourist Sites) Regulations, 2019, L.I. 2393 was passed.

The licence, he said, would help to regulate and ensure that tourist sites had basic amenities like washroom facilities, emergency response measures, unqualified staff and tour guides to enrich tourists’ experience.  

He mentioned the recent inauguration of National Museum by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, a move that he said had attracted over 100,000 to the museum in the past three months.

He also cited ongoing development projects at the tourist sites such as improvement of access roads at sites in Kintampo, TafiAtome Monkey Sanctuary, and the paragliding sites at the Odweanoma Mountain at Kwahu-Atibie.

Ghana: Ministry Urged to Repair Roads to Tourists Sites

Koforidua — The Eastern Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr Frederick Adjei-Rudolph, has appealed to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to repair roads to promote tourism in the country.

He said bad nature of roads leading to the tourist sites was affecting the tourism sector and resulting in a decline in revenue.

Mr Adjei-Rudolph said "Many tourists after contacting us to visit tourist sites refuse to come after they consider the nature of roads leading to tourist sites and this is affecting our industry greatly.

"We are losing 50 per cent of patronage due to this and we plead with the ministry to fix those roads."

The Regional Director made the call at a press conference organised by GTA as part of activities to mark this year's World Tourism Day, in the Eastern Region, on Tuesday.

The celebration on the theme: "Rethinking Tourism" was to highlight the opportunity for countries to rethink the need for the tourism industry to bounce back after effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current economic meltdown being experienced across the world.

Mr Adjei-Rudolph said that tourism throughout the world has become an economic transformational factor, and investing in the sector would help Ghana increase in revenue.

"Pumping money into tourism include fixing roads leading to the tourist sites. The GTA does not fix roads and so we will continue to appeal to the ministry to repair roads, especially the ones leading to tourists sites", adding that tourism could create unemployment.

"Due of low patronage of tourism sites, the owners are laying off their workers, hence the need to fix roads to the sites to enable them operate at optimum level," he said.

Mr Adjei-Rudolph urged stakeholders in the tourism sector to work hard to increase revenue.

The Regional Director said that in line with the sub theme: "Promoting Domestic Tourism for Wealth Creation in Communities," his outfit would embark on domestic tourism awareness activities through the local media, to improve the interest of members of the communities in tourism and investment.

He said the GTA would also ensure tourist sites comply with the new tourist sites regulation LI 2393, revive existing tourist clubs in second cycle schools.

Financial institutions encouraged to fund tourism projects

Akwasi Agyeman, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), has encouraged financial institutions to help fund tourism projects as a means of supporting hospitality development in the country. He observed that most financial institutions did not have a special desk for tourism and hospitality as they had for other sectors because of a misunderstanding of the operations of the tourism and hospitality sectors. Mr. Agyeman was speaking at the first quarter the of the Public and Private Partnership Forum (PPPF) held in Koforidua by the GTA on the theme: “Financial Empowerment for the Tourism and Hospitality Sector.” The forum recorded over 140 participants from across the country, including the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, representatives from the Ghana Tourism Federation (GhaToF), and the Tour Guides Association, among others. He noted that the sector operators were challenged with funding issues, which made it difficult to develop the tourism and hospitality sectors only with funding from the government. However, he said, that the sector saw a steady rise of 57 per cent growth in year-on-year domestic tourism in 2023, which indicated an improvement in tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic. This improvement, he stated, resulted from the renovation of some tourist sites, such as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, which was the most visited tourist site last year. “If we continue to improve upon our products and infrastructure, we can draw more people to visit these sites,” he said. He mentioned seven major product improvement projects that are currently ongoing in the country, adding that some would be completed and commissioned for use by June this year. The sites included the Salaga Slave Market, Salaga Slave Wells, Pikworo Slave Camp, Tanoboasi Sacred Grove, Denkyira Kyekyewere Eco Park, and the Nationalism and Peace Parks. Mr. Charles Adu Gyamfi, the President of GhaToF, appealed to the government to allocate one per cent of the tourism levy to the tourism private sector for their operations and capacity building. He also suggested the establishment of a PPPF secretariat to facilitate effective collaboration and regular interactions among stakeholders.

Ghana Tourism Authority launches 2024 edition of ‘Feast Ghana & Rep Your Region’

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has launched Feast Ghana on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at the Accra Tourist Information Centre (ATIC).

The Ghana Tourism Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Asanteman Queenmothers Association and the Public Service Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (PSWU of TUC) mark a significant event aimed at promoting our local foods and showcasing our diversity as a people.

It is part of the Ghana Cares Obatanpa project that continues to help resuscitate the Tourism and Hospitality sector.

This inaugural edition of Feast Ghana celebrated Ghana’s rich culinary heritage under the theme ‘Flavours Of Ghana, Celebrating Ghana’s Cultural Diversity Through Food’.

The launch event also celebrated the Ladies Club of GTA which will be celebrating the second edition of its “Rep your Region” program.

Following its launch, Feast Ghana will travel to the Ashanti Region on 22nd April in partnership with the Asanteman Queenmothers Association to honour the 25th anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

This extension of the event highlights the region’s cultural significance and culinary contributions.

In the words of the CEO of GTA, Akwasi Agyeman “Feast Ghana represents a unique opportunity to showcase the vibrant culinary richness of our nation and celebrate the unity and diversity that food embodies in our culture. This program aligns with the “See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana and Feel Ghana ” campaign launched by GTA a few years ago”

The grand celebration of Feast Ghana will be held on May Day at the Accra International Conference Center, in collaboration with the PSWU of TUC.

This final event promises to be a memorable showcase of Ghana’s local foods, emphasizing unity, diversity, and the vibrant spirit of our people.

Attendees can look forward to experiencing traditional dishes, culinary delights, and a celebration of Ghana’s heritage throughout the journey of Feast Ghana.

Ghana Tourism Authority Launches 50th Anniversary Celebrations

Ghana Tourism Authority on Wednesday launched its 50th Anniversary celebrations, and presented the 2022 Tourism Report, which provides insights into the performance of Ghana’s tourism industry in the year under review.

Speaking at the launch, our CEO, Yofi Grant, lauded the efforts of GTA over the 50-year period, in positioning the country as a preferred tourism destination.

He also implored industry players to focus on Infrastructure development, Health/Safety, and Quality improvement, to cement Ghana’s position as the choice destination for tourists.

He assured that GIPC and GTA will continue to work collaboratively in branding the country internally and externally.

The event brought together high-level participants including; Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture, Hon. Ibrahim Awal, and his deputy Mark Okraku Mantey; CEO of Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman; CEO of Ghana Tourism Development Company, Kwadwo Antwi; as well as key private sector players.
