Buggies [ ]

Overview [ ].

To prove to their producer, Mr. Wilman , that beach buggies aren't terrible, the presenters are challenged to drive across Namibia to its border with Angola. After first customising their own buggy, the guys meet at the Namibian coastline to formally receive their challenge. The guys set off into the desert in search of a road leading to a town where they can buy a map. Having not found a road, and with the sun setting, May and Hammond entrust Clarkson to be the navigator after he tells them he can determine where to go by reading the stars. They set off following Clarkson but fail to find a road and are forced to sleep under their cars.

The next morning, the guys realise that Clarkson has led them back to their starting point and they decide to simply follow the beach north to find a road. In doing so, however, they realise that they are becoming trapped between unclimbable sand dunes and the incoming tide of the Atlantic Ocean. The situation is made worse when they arrive at Namibia's salt pan at the top of the beach, which they are forbidden from driving across, and are forced to race the tide back down the beach to escape.

Having spent a second night sleeping under their cars, the guys decide to head inland to search for a road. However, this means that they must contest with the Namib desert's enormous sand dunes. Clarkson and Hammond both have close calls with two separate sand dunes while May struggles to climb them with his underpowered buggy. Later, Clarkson's buggy breaks down and he is forced to attach a rope between the buggy's engine in the rear and the front windshield in order to be able to decelerate.

Eventually, however, the guys find power pylons and follow them to a dirt road. Overjoyed, they begin to head down the road when Clarkson is forced to stop again. Hammond and May decide to leave Clarkson and head off in search of a town. Clarkson hails a passing motorist for some water and mends his car as best as he can. However, his efforts are only somewhat effective, as he is forced to stop every two or three miles to prevent his buggy from overheating. Over the next four hours, Clarkson manages to travel just twenty miles and he sets in for a long cold night on the road. Elsewhere, Hammond and May finally arrive at a town - Windhoek, the capital and largest city of Namibia. There, they head straight for a hotel with a bar to wait for Clarkson.

Part II [ ]

The next day, Clarkson, having nursed his buggy into Windhoek in the early hours of the morning, suggests that the trio should spend a day gathering supplies in the city before heading off again, given the rough conditions of the first leg of their journey. While Hammond opts for more traditional tenting equipment, Clarkson and May end up purchasing enough camping gear to necessitate hiring two large safari trucks to transport it around.

Leaving Windhoek the next day, the trio eventually wind up at a game reserve in Omaruru; while there, Clarkson notices a bunch of dehorned rhinoceri, and decides that the trio should try and help the conservation efforts. The next morning, the presenters' put their plan into action, and set off to try and find some poachers. Finding it difficult to spot them on the ground, Clarkson decides that they should use parasails to spot the poachers from the air, though this fails when a gust of wind causes Clarkson to crash into Hammond. At night, the trio don tactical gear and tranquiliser guns before heading out for another search, but their efforts are fruitless, and Clarksons end up shooting Hammond by mistake.

Because Hammond was unable to be woken the next morning, May and Clarkson put him in his buggy and get a helicopter to lift him and his car to a meeting point further down the road, much to Hammond's bewilderment upon finally awaking. The next two days on the road shake May and Clarkson's buggies, causing numerous breakdowns along the way. Tired of the rough roads, May tries to lead an expedition offroad, which only causes more mishaps.

On their third day, after a final night of driving with broken headlights, the trio finally arrive at Angolan river. The next morning, however, they realise that there is no path to their destination and that they will need to find a way to cross the river. They decide to build a cable car across the river, which takes another day to complete. Clarkson and May are successful in reaching the beach with the cable car, but Hammond's buggy becomes stuck a few feet from the destination. Clarkson and May, unable to help him, decide to conclude their efforts to prove Mr. Wilman wrong as a failure.

The grand tour: namibia trailer teases epic two-part special.

A new trailer for Amazon Prime's The Grand Tour shows Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May embarking on an epic journey across Namibia.

Amazon Prime's The Grand Tour - the return of Top Gear trio Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May after Clarkson was let go by the BBC - has largely been a success so far in its first season. The series premiere broke the streaming service's viewing records and research by online piracy specialists suggest that the show was the most pirated series in history, demonstrating its starring trio's enduring popularity, even when people aren't  watching legally.

While the  critical reception has been largely positive, most commentators have noticed that the series doesn't stray too far from the formula established during the presenters' Top Gear days - with an 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' approach clearly in full effect. Although only at its mid-way point, The Grand Tour has already seen the three boys partake in military training, build a car with mud and 'kill off' a host of celebrities in dramatic fashion. However, one staple of the Top Gear formula - particularly around the Christmas and New Year period -  that hasn't yet made an appearance is the epic road trip special spread across multiple episodes.

As such, it's not too surprising that December 30th and 31st will see the release of a two-part The Grand Tour special taking place in Namibia entitled 'The Beach (Buggy) Boys', for which Amazon Prime have now released a trailer . The clip shows Clarkson, Hammond and May trekking across the African country in dune buggies, braving harsh deserts, meeting locals and of course, bickering with each other. Towards the end of the clip, it also appears as if Hammond's buggy is being carried over a cliff by an overhead cable of some kind - much to the presenter's terror.

The trailer is more or less indistinguishable from the trio's  Top Gear specials - and given that those episodes provided some of that series' most memorable moments, the Namibia trip promises to be a late Christmas treat for longtime fans of the motoring trio. The two-parter will do away with the standard format of The Grand Tour , with the traveling tent and skits such as 'Conversation Street' and 'Celebrity Brain Crash' taking a break in order to allow the buggy trek to take up the bulk of both episodes' run time.

Specials during the trio's tenure on Top Gear always saw Clarkson, Hammon and May on top form, giving fans classic moments such as turning their cars into mobile homes during the Africa special and building an actual bridge during their Burma trip. As such, continuing this tradition in The Grand Tour is likely to further the success the series has already experienced and provide essential New Year viewing, thanks to the inevitable blend of stunning locations, motoring escapades and the presenters' undeniable chemistry.

Interestingly however, the special episodes also have a history of causing controversy - and consequently publicity - in some sections of the media. The 2007 U.S.A. special saw the trio attacked in Alabama for having slogans such as 'NASCAR sucks' and 'Country and Western is rubbish' on the sides of their cars and the Burma special caused some problems for the BBC after the alleged use of a racial slur. As ever, it'll be interesting to see whether the presenters can come out of these two episodes without getting themselves into some kind of trouble.

The Grand Tour continues with 'The Beach (Buggy) Boys: Part 1' on December 30th and Part 2 on the 31st on Amazon Prime.

The Grand Tour: Namibia Special Trailer

In this 2-part special The Grand Tour abandons its usual travelling tent for a road trip across Namibia as Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May attempt to demonstrate the brilliance of that great ‘60s throwback, the beach buggy.

The Grand Tour boss, Mr Wilman has declared that beach buggies are terrible and it’s up to the hosts to prove him wrong as they saddle up three examples built to their own specifications and set off on an epic journey across south west Africa, taking in sand dunes, rough roads, dirt tracks, animals, accidents, incidents, arguments and some incredible scenery.

This episode is the second part of the special episode ‘The Beach (Buggy) Boys, which takes place in Namibia. The presenters abandon their tent for South Africa.

Clarkson meets Hammond and May who are in Windhoek to continue their journey to the Namibia-Angola border. Clarkson and May’s vehicles are slowly falling apart due to the bumpy road surface so May suggests that they continue off-road.

This turns out to be even worse and they eventually encounter incredibly soft sand which slows their progress. Begrudgingly, they return to the road.

They eventually stop to set up camp and with a mission to sabotage Clarkson’s buggy, he ends up setting light to the front of his own.

Further on in the journey, about 5 miles from the end, they decide to build a cable car line to traverse a river. Clarkson and May make it, but Hammond ends up getting stuck half way.

Because of this Clarkson admits that Wilman was indeed right – beach buggies are terrible cars.

What Went Wrong With The Grand Tour Namibia Special?

All filler, no killer.

The extended Top Gear road trips were often the highlights of the show, with memorable episodes set in Botswana, Bolivia and of course the infamous Patagonia trip showing how much punishment a car can take when faced with challenging conditions. Expectations were high for the first Grand Tour special, a two-part epic that, for the first time, looked like it would live up to the premise of the show with a 1000-mile journey in beach buggies to a "wild, rugged and extremely remote place" on the coast of Namibia.

On the plus side, the absence of The Grand Tour tent meant we didn't get any cringe-worthy studio segments . Unfortunately, what we got was nearly two hours of unbridled boredom. It was especially disappointing after the previous episode was a triumphant return to form. So, what went wrong with this special? Firstly, the chosen cars simply weren't very compelling. The episode centered on the trio using Volkswagen Beetle-based beach buggies to tackle the terrain. Cue some predictable custom cars built to reflect the presenter's personalities: Clarkson's was fitted with a heaving V8 engine, while May's was almost completely stock.

The problem was that you never felt like any of the presenters had a heartfelt attachment to their cars, so when they inevitably kept breaking down it was difficult to care. It was a stark contrast to the connection Hammond developed with the lovable Opel Kadett (better known as 'Oliver') in Botswana, or the Porsche 928 Clarkson drove in Patagonia - the same car he raced to visit his dying dad in hospital. The cars are characters in their own right in these specials, yet these beach buggies didn't have any soul somehow. The location also left a lot to be desired.

While we were treated to some awe-inspiring scenery which wouldn't have looked out of place in an episode of Planet Earth, part one in particular suffered from some serious repetition. Setting the entire episode in a barren desert made it difficult to sustain interest, and even the trio admitted they achieved nothing having ended up back where they started. You can tell it was fun to film, but it wasn't entertaining to watch. Part two didn't fare much better, as it was overrun with contrived comedy. A hunt for animal poachers had potential and would have made for a better, more noble premise, but it was never fully explored and was all just a set up for Hammond to be "shot" with a tranquilizer dart.

Then we had the traditional presenter pranks, which seem to be more juvenile under Amazon's reign judging from James May's gear knob replacement. Watching a terrified Hammond wake up to find himself suspended by a helicopter was amusing, though, even if it was blatantly staged. The biggest problem, however, was the pacing – this special was overlong, to say the least. In short, there wasn't enough material to justify two episodes: the shorter first episode was 45 minutes of filler material, while part 2 was overstuffed with jarring comedy to pad out the runtime to an hour. These issues probably wouldn't have been so noticeable with tighter editing - the special would have worked better if it was condensed into a standard hour-long episode.

That's not to say the Namibia special didn't have its moments, however: the cinematography was jaw-dropping, and watching the presenter's plummet down steep dunes and get suspended over a river in a cable car-style contraption looked genuinely harrowing. But it lacked the sense of adventure, spontaneity and danger that classic Top Gear road trips had in spades - this was The Grand Tour's equivalent of the Top Gear India special. What did you think of The Grand Tour Namibia Special?
