The Grand Tour: Seamen is here - 10 things you need to know

From boats to bicycles, the trio try it all

The Grand Tour: Seamen is here - 10 things you need to know

The Grand Tour is back and, well, there aren’t any cars in it. There’s also only one episode, and Clarkson even addresses climate change without a single joke or raised eyebrow.

Let us explain...

Having bid a tearful farewell to the live studio format which Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have called home for the past 17 years, the end of series three of The Grand Tour marked a turning point.

This is partly because writing scripts, interviewing guests and testing cars took up a lot of time, but also because today’s audience just isn’t into cars the way it was a decade ago.

Now, it’s all about the adventure; the special, beautifully-shot, hour-plus episodes where the three go in search of a travel documentary, then crash, fall over and generally make a complete hash of it. Only this time, things are a little more grown up. To explain, here are ten things you need to know about the new series of The Grand Tour.

Watch The Grand Tour presents: Seamen now.

1. The Grand Tour isn't really a series

The Grand Tour: Seamen is coming - here's everything you need to know

Much to Clarkson’s disappointment that the new episode isn’t going out on election night, The Grand Tour presents: Seamen (yes, that’s the official name, quiet at the back) hits Amazon Prime Video a day later, on Friday 13 December - which means it is live now.

But don’t be expecting episode two a week later, because instead of eight or 10 shows to sink our teeth into, the new ‘series’ is just two episodes. The first is an adventure through Cambodia and Vietnam, and the second, due out sometime next year, is in Madagascar.

These will be followed by two more adventures, likely towards the end of 2020 and start of 2021.

2. There’s no studio, audience, guest or test track

These episodes are shot entirely on location, with no studio. As for the location of the old tent, May reckons it’s in the attic somewhere

On missing the studio and live audience to chuck insults at, Clarkson said: “It was fun and I liked it, but honestly, because I was the one to research the guests, prepare the questions and the news, and almost always do the car test, there was a lot of work. Now that’s gone away I can actually see the children occasionally.”

May also admits he misses the old days, but now realises the adventure specials are what works best, both for the presenters and their audience. “I do slightly miss the live audience because I like the stimulus of a live performance...but, you know, let’s assume it’s a straight choice - a studio run or specials - I think we are better doing specials because it’s what we do best...we know that’s what the audience likes."

3. There are no cars, either

The Grand Tour: Seamen is coming - here's everything you need to know

No, really; this adventure special features no cars at all. Instead it’s all about boats, and Clarkson explains why: “I chose boats simply because the other two hate them. They made me go across Vietnam once on a motorcycle, which I hated, and we’ve done lorries, which I hated, so I thought it was time for some payback, and these two could use a mode of transport they don’t like.”

Although there are no cars, the boats still arrive in the same presenter-chosen format we’re used to. This, of course, means Clarkson opts for a £100,000 replica of the PBR boat used by the US Navy in the Vietnam War, Hammond picks a Miami Vice-style speedboat modestly called Razzle Dazzle, and May goes for a 1930s craft which has more in common with your grandmother’s sideboard than a boat.

May digs a little deeper into why shifting the focus away from cars is no bad thing. “It’s a narrowing audience [who enjoy car reviews] and also that need is being fulfilled by a lot more people these days...YouTube is full of car reviews...so we’re sort of slightly redundant on that side of things.”

Hammond adds: “It would be difficult to do a show just evaluating and reviewing cars now because the current generation aren’t fussed, it’s not their thing.”

The next Grand Tour special in Madagascar does use cars, but May says: “We aren’t reviewing them, we are using them as a means of having an adventure and a laugh.”

4. Clarkson addresses climate change...

On arriving in what is supposed to be the rainy season, The Grand Tour’s 70-plus crew found Cambodia’s Tonle Sap lake had all but tried up, as the river which feeds it - the only one in the world which changes direction - was not flowing as normal.

Clarkson explained: “It’s very difficult to move [The Grand Tour] around, and so we monitored the weather and it should have been pouring with rain, [the lake] should have been five times bigger than it was, and it simply wasn’t. We just had to set off knowing it hadn’t filled up...it was damn near empty.”

Addressing how climate change had likely caused this, Clarkson added: “While it’s very easy to say the Chinese dams are responsible, they’ve only contributed to it. There is no question, and we admitted to it for the first time ever on one of our shows, that there may be such a thing as climate change.”

5. ...and says he is carbon neutral

The Grand Tour: Seamen is coming - here's everything you need to know

As well as bringing the climate change debate to The Grand Tour for the first time, Clarkson is also doing his bit back in the UK too, while shooting a new series for Amazon about his Oxfordshire farm.

“I’m completely carbon neutral,” the presenter said proudly. “I’ve a thousand-acre farm and plant hundreds of trees every year and grow crops, so I’ve got no carbon footprint at all. Quite the opposite. [CO2 created by The Grand Tour] is nothing compared to what I’m soaking up with the farm. Nothing.

6. Distance makes the jokes last longer

You could argue the old studio format was running thin on new material, and although the trio will never quite agree on that, May said how being apart injected some life back into their relationship.

“We went quite a long time without seeing each other [after the last series] or even speaking to each other before we made this programme. I was off making my Japan show [Our Man In Japan, also coming to Amazon], Jeremy was on his long holiday in South East Asia, Hammond was working on some other stuff back in England, and I don’t think we even texted each other in that time. So when we finally got back together it was with some horror, obviously, but it also meant we had saved up all our capacity for mocking each other...It gave us a new energy.”

7. Hammond doesn’t crash (much)

The Grand Tour: Seamen is coming - here's everything you need to know

He might not have a massive shunt attended by an air ambulance this time around, but Hammond still gets himself into plenty of trouble. Without giving too much away, the episode finale sees the thrio venture out to sea in their completely un-seaworthy vessels, with the finish line 30 miles away.

It’s a harrowing journey Clarkson says took hours and which Hammond ranks “in the top three worst things I’ve ever done,” along with crashing off a Swiss mountain, and having a dragster tyre blow at over 300mph.

Hammond adds: “It was bloody horrible. Because I don’t know anything about boats, I don’t know if my boat should be doing what it was doing...especially when I thought I was going to go over backwards. We were all bloody uncomfortable.”

Asked if he thought they were in real trouble, May admits with humility: “Yeah, I think we were actually. I didn’t realise it as much at the time...But it was, yeah, it was pretty tough. I was just thinking, I must get to the other side...you can see the difference between someone who is really worried and someone who is just pulling a face.”

Clarkson, who has held a boat licence for decades, had an easier time of it, but recognises the dangers of producing a television show like The Grand Tour. “It was really uncomfortable, horrible...I don’t care about James and Richard, but the camera crew and the production teams, they were really quite scared. Those boats were sinking. Four fishermen drowned in that storm right where we were.”

8. It’s a bit more grown up

Shifting away from the studio also brings with it a sense of The Grand Tour growing up. There are no cringe-worthy jokes written to provoke controversy, and the situations the trio haphazardly get themselves into all feel refreshingly genuine.

Clarkson in-particular harks back to his documentary making days, taking the audience aside on a couple of occasions to tell stories related to the journey. It’s the kind of material that would clutter the cutting room floor of a programme governed by a strict 58-minute time slot, but the flexibility of online TV without adverts and schedules gives the show space to breathe, and it benefits as a result.

On adding education into the mix, Clarkson said: “I was interested in my boat’s story and I thought there was a nice couple of little stories in there...I just thought if something is interesting and provides entertainment, I’ll try and put it in...that’s all I’m here to do.”

9. They’re still good mates (sort of)

The Grand Tour: Seamen is coming - here's everything you need to know

As much as they like to say they merely tolerate each other, there’s no escaping that their relationship is The Grand Tour’s key ingredient. Despite the lack of cars, Clarkson says: “It’s still us and we still bicker and we still laugh a lot. When the cameras are turned off, the laughter doesn’t really stop...That shines through in the programme and we do have the benefit of having worked together for 17 years, you really can’t mimic that.”

May, unsurprisingly, is less keen to praise their chemistry. “Hate is a strong word, but we do tolerate each other.”

When asked to state a positive aspect of each of his colleagues, May, ever keen to maintain the veil of displeasure, says bluntly: “Jeremy has lost a bit of weight recently, and Richard Hammond hasn’t almost killed himself recently. There you go, those are two positives.”

10. They don’t watch Top Gear

But they still speak fondly of their old show, Clarkson especially: “I wish them all the very best, but I don’t watch it. It was my baby, then it got taken away and they’ve got it now. It’s like if you have a baby and it’s put up for adoption, you hope the baby is brought up very well but you don’t go and look through the curtains every night. That’s really how I feel.”

Jeremy Clarkson details Grand Tour horror after boat capsized during monsoon

Jeremy Clarkson has detailed a near-fatal incident that happened when he and co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May were filming The Grand Tour in Vietnam

Top Gear legend Jeremy Clarkson has spoken out about his near-fatal Grand Tour horror after four people died, just inches away from him.

Speaking about the terrible ordeal, Jeremy explained that the cast and crew of the Amazon Prime exclusive programme were filming an episode of the show in Vietnam back in 2019 before the pandemic.

Jeremy, Richard Hammond and James May ended up in a dangerous and near-fatal situation after a massive monsoon started in the midst of the shoot while the cast and crew were abroad filming for the show on a boat.

With the trio in the middle of the South China Sea, the boat was close to capsizing when James was rescued by the producers as the boat began to flood with water from the monsoon.

Jeremy spoke on the event and said: “It transpired four people were killed an inch away from us. It’s about the only time health and safety has made the correct decision."

He explained: "I, of course, was fine, but May had to abandon ship as crew boats were filling with water."

"The ending we’d planned, that we’d spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on, that we had researched for months, didn’t happen.

“As a result of the conditions we simply couldn’t complete the shoot but because of the conditions we had one hell of an ending ‒ an astonishing ending.”

Jeremy has now hinted that his TV show The Grand Tour, which features pals Richard Hammond and James May, could undergo a huge overhaul as they plan out their new episodes.

Before the release of their latest special, Carnage A Trois, Jeremy spoke of how they can't wait to get back to shooting the series abroad, explaining: “We’ll see how this series is received but there are plans to do something similar again. For now, we can’t wait to get back to doing more big foreign travel.

“It’s tricky because everything’s so fluid at the moment. It takes six months to plan a foreign trip for us, and who’s to know what’s going to happen in six months’ time?"

Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond presented Top Gear alongside each other from October 2002, with James May joining in 2003 – and ever since the trio have been inseparable.

In 2015 the three stars began working on their Amazon Prime exclusive – The Grand Tour, which was released a year later in 2016.

The Grand Tour’s fate ‘revealed’ after Jeremy Clarkson’s exit in final episode

Jeremy Clarkson

The Grand Tour has reportedly been given a huge lifeline, with plans to develop a fresh version without Jeremy Clarkson .

The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host, 63, and his co-stars Richard Hammond and James May have filmed their final special of the Amazon Prime series, after it was revealed in November that it was coming to an end.

The trio, who first hit our screens together in 2003 on  Top Gear , announced their exit from the series in November last year, however, it could be coming back with a fresh presenting team.

According to reports, Studio Lambert – the production company who brought us The Traitors and Squid Game: The Challenge – has landed the contract to develop a fresh version of the motoring show.

An ‘update to the format’ is being prepped with new presenting talent, although has not been formally greenlit, Broadcast claims.

Clarkson, Hammond and May first launched the series in 2016, with their penultimate episode The Sand Job having aired earlier this year following a trip to Mauritania, and a final in Zimbabwe yet to reach our screens.

As the news of The Grand Tour coming to a grinding halt was announced in November, it was said to be ‘the end of an era’.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May

A source revealed at the time: ‘It’s a surprising decision and everyone realises it very much marks the end of an era for the three presenters.

‘The Grand Tour is one of Prime Video’s most watched shows and Jeremy, James and Richard have a devoted following.’

The insider continued to  The Sun : ‘But the guys have made no bones about the fact they’re all advancing in years and they have lots of other projects to pursue.

‘They just felt like the time was right and wanted to go out on a high when the show remained popular.’

But, it may not be the end of Clarkson, Hammond, 54, and May, 61, on our screens together.

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May

When asked if they’d reunite on another project, May said: ‘I wouldn’t rule it out, but you do have to bear in mind that we’re all getting on a bit.

‘We’ve got two (episodes) in the bag, there’s one coming out very soon, and another coming out a bit after that, but what happens between now and then we’ll have to wait and see.’

Clarkson also spoke about The Grand Tour ending and branded himself ‘unfit, fat and old’ when speaking about why he was done with the ‘immensely physical’ show.

‘I’ve driven cars higher than anyone else and further north than anyone else,’ he told The Times.

‘We’ve done everything you can do with a car.

‘When we had meetings about what to do next, people just threw their arms in the air.’

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May

The future of The Grand Tour was thrown into doubt following Clarkson’s vile comments in a newspaper column about Meghan Markle  in January 2023, in which the broadcaster said he dreamed of the Duchess being paraded through the streets and publicly shamed.

It became Ipso’s most complained-about article after its publication, receiving more than 25,100 complaints, with Clarkson later issuing a lengthy apology to the Suits actress and her husband Prince Harry, and claims emerged that  Amazon reportedly ‘parted ways’ with him .

Meanwhile, Clarkson’s adventures at his Diddly Squat farm will continue to air on Amazon Prime for season four, while the third instalment of Clarkson’s Farm premieres next month.

Metro.co.uk has approached Studio Lambert for comment.

The Grand Tour is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson, renowned for his role in the popular car show The Grand Tour alongside Richard Hammond and James May, has recently spoken about the future of the series. The show, which began on Amazon Prime in 2016, has been a fan favourite but will see no further series after next year. This decision, made by the streaming platform’s bosses, brings an end to a series that has been both entertaining and influential for car enthusiasts.

Clarkson shared his thoughts on Instagram, stating:

“Been a busy day. No more Grand Tour after next year but a LOT more Clarkson’s Farm. Which, this evening, is looking extremely lovely.”

This post quickly became a hub for fans to express their feelings about the series ending. The emotional reactions ranged from sadness over the show’s conclusion to appreciation for the years of entertainment it provided.

One fan commented:

“Please start a podcast with the three of you, it can just be called the news and you rant for an hour about cars.”

Others expressed their gratitude:

“The end of Clarkson, Hammond and May in whatever it’s called is a sad day. Thank you for everything you did for petrolheads. And now farmheads!”

The influence of the trio was evident in another fan’s words:

“It’s really nice coming to the comments and seeing how these 3 impacted the lives of so many. These lads got me through countless dark times with laughter and endless banter. We all knew the day was coming, and the truest of fans will wish you, Hammond, May, and indeed all of the crew that made the magic happen the absolute best in the next stage. Thank you for inspiring countless enthusiasts around the world.”

Despite Clarkson’s announcement, there’s talk that Amazon Prime might continue The Grand Tour with new hosts. An insider revealed:

“It’s a surprising decision and everyone realises it very much marks the end of an era for the three presenters.”

This potential revival aligns with the presenters’ acceptance of passing the torch to a new generation.

“The Grand Tour is one of Prime Video’s most watched shows and Jeremy, James and Richard have a devoted following. But the guys have made no bones about the fact they’re all advancing in years and they have lots of other projects to pursue,” a source informed The Sun. “They just felt like the time was right and wanted to go out on a high when the show remained popular.”

As fans prepare to bid farewell to this iconic trio, they can look forward to two more special episodes of The Grand Tour, showcasing the team’s adventures in Mauritania and Zimbabwe. This farewell follows their departure from Top Gear in 2015, after a disagreement with producers.

They manage to drop two cars into the reef site, and May is assigned to anchor them down while Clarkson and Hammond go jet skiing. Rated 8.0/10.

20. S01, E11 – Italian Lessons

grand tour pbr episode

To prove that a second-hand Maserati priced under £8,000 are a better buy than a Ford Focus, the presenters travel to Circuit de Croix-en-Ternois in France for a series of tests with Clarkson’s Biturbo S Coupé, Hammond’s 430 Saloon, and May’s Zagato Spyder. Because May injured his right arm prior to the challenge, he bought an automatic variant. The presenters then embark on a road trip through Northern France. Rated 8.0/10.

21. S01, E04 – Enviro-mental

grand tour pbr episode

The presenters travel to South Wales and set out to make the most environmentally friendly car bodies using the platform of a Land Rover Discovery. They take an 11 mile road trip to a dirt track, where they race against three normal cars. The idea of environmentally friendly car bodies is abandoned after Clarkson’s meat car is infested with maggots, Hammond’s garden car catches fire, and May’s mud and hay car falls apart. Rated 7.8/10.

22. S02, E04 – ‘Unscripted’

grand tour pbr episode

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May attempt to show what would happen if  The Grand Tour  made a completely unscripted film with no pre-arranged locations, no set-up stunts, and no planned incidents. All they agree is that the starting point will be in Croatia, where Jeremy arrives in an Audi TT RS, while Richard turns up with a not-at-all-comparable Ariel Nomad. What follows is a demonstration of why some kind of script is generally a good thing. Rated 6.3/10.

23. S02 Mini-Special – ‘Feed the World’

grand tour pbr episode

In this mini-special, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May take it upon themselves to try and end world hunger with an incredible journey across Mozambique. The three notice that people in the coastal regions of this country are well-fed on the bountiful supplies of fish from the ocean, while those in the interior exist on the brink of hunger. Their solution is to find a way to transport that fish inland but, predictably, they cannot agree on the best method to do this. Rated 5.7/10.

Eres un figura… Gracias, Un saludo

Mozambique last !? This was for me the best and funniest of all the episodes!

' src=

I thought enviro-mental was one of the highlights in season one, although what James built was stupid and just not funny. They should re-do that episode except this time they all follow Richard Hammond’s concept idea.

' src=

Really disappointed with the mini special, was looking forward to it all series, think next time they should do a normal 2hr special cos that 1 was rubbish an just felt rushed :/

' src=

Yeah so was I to be honest. I wonder if carting around such a large crew puts a limit on how far they can go or what they’re able to do.

' src=

feels like all they do is talking while driving. usually we would’ve see them detour, buying souvenirs, ‘upgrading’ their vehicles, enjoying the view, etcetera etcetera

Paramount+ May 2024 Movies, TV Shows, and Sports

P aramount has announced the lineup of movies, TV shows, and sports coming to the Paramount+ streaming service in May. The Paramount Plus May 2024 schedule includes new seasons of Evil and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars , as well as new episodes of The Chi .

Two new music documentaries, LOLLA: The Story of Lollapalooza and Kiss the Futur e, join the critically acclaimed biopic Bob Marley: One Love , which has ranked as the No. 1 movie on the service among active subscriber households since its debut on April 12. Also, the UEFA Champions League should deliver edge-of-your-seat excitement for soccer fans in the lead-up to the final on June 1.

Throughout its run, we’ve followed an elite team of believers and skeptics tasked by the Vatican to investigate purported demonic events in the Paramount+ Original series Evil . The supernatural drama, which is preparing for its finale, is the creation of husband-and-wife showrunners and writing partners Robert and Michelle King, who have helmed a number of beloved series, including The Good Wife , The Good Fight , and Elsbeth .

On May 17, 14 of the most talented queens in Drag Race HERstory are returning to the Werk Room for the ninth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars . There is more at stake this season as each queen is competing not only for a spot in the Drag Race Hall of Fame but also for a charitable organization that will receive a major donation if they win.

Next month, we will return to Windy City when The Chi resumes. The SHOWTIME drama has never shied away from tough subjects, and this season delves even deeper into the internal struggles of life in Chicago’s South Side. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and one focus this season is seeking help with mental health. Several characters form a healing circle to create a safe space to discuss relationships, challenges, and the intricacies of life.

LOLLA: The Story of Lollapalooza chronicles the impact of Chicago’s famed music festival since its debut in 1991. Produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Kiss the Future is a moving testament to the power of art that recounts the efforts of an underground community that used music to bring attention—and ultimately U2—to the crisis in Sarajevo.

The second season of Behind the Music delves into the lives of musicians with new episodes about Bell Biv DeVoe, Trace Adkins, and Wolfgang Van Halen and remastered episodes featuring 50 Cent, Ice-T, The Notorious B.I.G., and more.

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Paramount+ is celebrating and lifting up the community’s creators and talent with a refresh of the Watch Us Rise collection. Launching May 1, it features hit series such as Halo and Yellowjackets , fan favorites including Ghosts and NCIS: Hawai’i , and movies like Oscar nominee Past Lives , Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All at Once , and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning .
