The hot water field known as yubatake is the symbol of Kusatsu. A total of 32,000 liters of hot water gushes out of the hot spring per minute, and yubatake in the centre of the town is the place where the piping hot water is cooled down. Especially during the night, yubatake is a popular photo spot with beautiful lightings. 2. Discover the origin of Daruma

Do you know the story about these traditional Japanese lucky charms? A Daruma is round shaped doll, formed after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism. You use the Daruma as follows: when you purchase a Daruma, it will be missing its’ eyes. After making a wish or setting a goal and asking the gods for help, one of the eyes is painted on the doll. Once you have achieved the goal or the wish came true, you paint the second eye to thank the gods. The last step is to bring the Daruma to a temple or shrine, to be burned at a ritual.

When visiting Japan, you will spot the Daruma dolls everywhere, especially at the temples and shrines. They differ in size and some places have customised the Daruma, but the colour is generally red, the eyes are missing and there is only the head.

Gunma prefecture duruma

Gunma prefecture, Takasaki city to be precise, is responsible for the largest part of the production of Daruma dolls. Over 80% of all the Daruma dolls distributed in Japan are produced here. The technique of making Daruma dolls has been unchanged for 200 years and at Daimonya, a special Daruma doll atelier, you can learn all about the Daruma as all of its elements have a meaning. After the explanation you can also make your own Daruma doll, a great souvenir to take home!

Daruma painting workshop Reservation required  9am – 5pm ¥ 800 (including your daruma and exercise)

From Takasaki station take the JR Shin-Etsu train to Gumma-Yawata station. From there is it a 5-10 min walk.

3. Mount Shirane

Gunma Yubatake Mount Shirane

Mount Shirane is a series of active volcano peaks just outside the Kusatsu onsen resort. The mountain offers good skiing possibilities in winter, hiking in spring and summer, and coloured leaves in the autumn. The hiking season usually lasts from mid-April to November. There are several walking trails starting from Kusatsu town centre or the Shirane Resthouse, that will bring you to the summit of the mountains where you can enjoy series of stunning crater lakes. The easiest and most popular walk is from the Shirane Resthouse to the milky-turquoise Yugama Crater Lake, which will take only 10 minutes.

From Kusatsu Onsen, there are buses to the Shirane Resthouse (about 30 min) from mid-April to early November.

4. Tomioka Silk Mill

Tomioka Silk Mill was Japan’s first, government-run modern silk factory for processing silkworm cocoons into raw silk. Established in 1872, the factory’s mass-production of high-quality silk played a key role in the start of trade between Japan and France. The Meiji government was pushing forward industrial modernization by introducing Western-style silk reeling machines and hiring a supervisor from France where the silk production had flourished at that time and had excellent silk-reeling technology.

gunma tourist spot

The multiple buildings of the Tomioka Silk Mill are well preserved and impressively show resemblance to their original appearance. A method called timber-framed brick construction , which involves laying bricks on a timber frame, was adopted with the construction. Bricks did not exist in Japan at that time therefore tile makers had to make bricks with their kilns.

The Tomioka Silk Mill ceased its operation in 1987, however, even after it closed, the mill has been kept in a good condition thanks to the effort to local businesses and people. In June 2014, Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List .

Tomioka Silk Mill 9am – 5pm ¥1,000

10-15 minute walk from Joshu-Tomioka station. To Joshu-Tomioka Station, take the Joshin Railway from Takasaki station (about 35 min). From Tokyo Station, take the Joetsu or Hokuriku Shinkansen to Takasaki Station (1 hr).

5. Ikaho Onsen

Ikaho Onsen is an onsen resort in Gunma Prefecture, equally famous as Kusatsu. Ikaho Onsen town is known for the many stone stairs, in the middle of the town there is a stone staircase with 365 steps. In the town, you will find some foot baths, fountains to drink the water of the hot springs, tea shops, souvenir shops, and traditional inns.

Ikaho onsen Gunma

From Ikaho Onsen, you can easily visit Mizusawa Kannon, a temple which dates back over 1,300 years. The temple is especially famous for Mizusawa Udon noodles , one of the most famous types of udon noodles in Japan! There are numbers of restaurants along the street below the temple where you can enjoy Mizusawa Udon.

  • From Tokyo Station, take the Joetsu or Hokuriku Shinkansen to Takasaki station (1 hr). Then take JR Joetsu or Agatsuma Line to Shibukawa station (about 25 min). Take a bus from Shibukawa Station to Ikaho (about 20 min).
  • Take JR Kanto Bus that runs directly from JR Shinjuku Highway Bus Terminal to Ikaho (about 100 min).

6. Haruna Shrine

This historic shrine, constructed about 1,400 years ago, is set in extensive grounds of 15 hectares, with a 700-meter long approach to the inner precincts. The shrine is nestled away in the mountains and dedicated to the god of fire Homusubi-no-kami and the god of soil Haniyamahime-no-kami . Several constructions on the shrine grounds including the main hall are designated as important cultural properties.

The walk from the entrance gate to the main hall through the cedar woods is very peaceful. You will be accompanied by the relaxing sound of the rippling water of the small waterfalls and streams and greeted by the statues of seven deities of good luck. The huge rock rising upon the historical main hall is very impressive. In recent years, the Haruna Shrine has become popular as a power spot which is filled with strong spiritual energy. As you descend the mountain on the bus you can experience the most breathtaking views of the snow-topped mountain line in the distance!

haruna shrine

Take Lake Harunako Bus from West Exit of Takasaki station and get off at Haruna Jinja bus stop (about 70 min).

7. Fukiware Falls

Fukiware Falls, which are 70 meters tall and 30 meters wide, are sometimes referred to as the “ Niagara of Japan ” because the shape of the falls shows some resemblance to the Niagara Falls in North America. The waterfall are impressively created by the gradual erosion of the rocks for more than 10,000 years. The view from the suspension bridge, looking down at the falls, is amazing. Especially autumn, when the leaves change their colours, the water fall attract many visitors. The forest around Fukiware falls offer many hiking and walking trails in a tranquil atmosphere.

Fukiware Falls

From Tokyo, take the JR Joetsu Shinkansen to Jomo Kogen Station (about 75 minutes). From the station, take a bus to Fukiware Falls (about 70 minutes).

8. Usui 3rd Bridge (Megane-bashi bridge)

Built in 1892, the Usui 3rd Bridge is popularly known as Megane-bashi that translates as glasses bridge. A nickname it got from its arches that look like spectacles. The bridge functioned as a railway passage through the Usui Pass between Yokokawa in Gunma prefecture and Karuizawa in Nagano prefecture until 1963. Designed by British engineer Charles Assheton Whately Pownall and Japanese engineer Seiichi Furukawa, the bridge was built by using the mixture of Western and Eastern technology. It is currently the largest brick bridge in Japan.

Along the disused railway, there is a six-kilometer nature trail called Apt Road surrounded by beautiful nature.

We recommend renting a car to visit because the public transport is very limited.

Usui 3rd bridge gunma

The surreal effects of Yubatake at night and illuminated

Gunma Top 10: Attractions & Things to Do

Offering outdoor getaways near Tokyo

Serena Ogawa

Gunma Prefecture, in eastern central Japan, might not make it on many a Japan bucket list—but there are plenty of reasons it should be. From outdoor activities and a unique history of horse breeding to natural wonders, Gunma has it all. History- and outdoor lovers alike can find something in this prefecture just a few hours north of Tokyo.

Here are ten hot spots just waiting for you to discover in Gunma:

Tomioka Silk Mill

Receiving a UNESCO World Heritage inscription in 2014, Tomioka Silk Mill is Japan’s oldest modern silk-reeling factory. It was established in 1872 by the Japanese government as a way to introduce French silk-reeling techniques and technology to Japan.

In the late 19th century, Japanese raw silk was the main economic export. But due to the demand for raw silk the quality soon began to falter, which would have greatly harmed the reputation of the raw silk industry in Japan; and so Tomioka Silk Mill was built with sophisticated machinery in hopes of improving the quality and quantity of raw silk.

Today, the mill remains in almost perfect condition and the lifestyles of the workers and French instructors are clearly recorded for guests to experience.

  • 1-1 Tomioka, Gunma 370-2316
  • 9:00 - 17:00 (Open Now)

Yubatake and Kusatsu Onsen

Visit the waters of Kusatsu Onsen if something is ailing you—unless it’s a broken heart. But even then, you might find some measure of solace while looking at the hauntingly surreal Yubatake. Located in the center of the hot spring town, the Yubatake pumps out an amazing 32,300 liters of hot water every minute. After the water is cooled a few degrees, it’s carried off to various local hot springs.

Kusatsu Onsen is a beautiful and healing place to visit whether you’re alone, with friends, or family. Explore the many hot springs of the town and discover which waters suit you best. From milky to clear, sulfurous to acidic, these magical baths are sure to warm you and soothe away your troubles.

  • Kusatsu, Kusatsu, Agatsuma District, Gunma 377-1711
  • Open 24 hours (Open Now)
  • Oze National Park

Head to the great outdoors at Oze National Park. The park crosses four prefectures, however, the most stunning views are said to be in Gunma. This is one outdoor activity you won't want to miss. Visit between May and October when the flora is at its best and you’ll be treated to vistas of skunk cabbages and golden daylilies dotting the marshlands.

Oze National Park is truly a Japanese treasure. With the wooden plank-like walkways, it makes for an easy, flat hike around its 6-kilometer trail. It’s a popular spot for flora as well as fauna and bird watching is an especially beloved pastime here. A shuttle bus from Tokura offers the best starting point for any would-be hiker. Be sure to bring plenty of water and to keep the trails and park free of trash on your return trip.

Oze National Park is also on the doorstep of the Minakami region — known for its outdoor activities like canyoning, bungee jumping, and kayaking in the summer, or skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

Sainokawara Park

Get your fill of the four seasons in Sainokawara Park, near Kusatsu Onsen. Just a short walk from the center of the hot spring town, past the Yubatake, visitors will find themselves in a forest of hot springs. There, in the open, are statues and monuments to literary figures who once visited.

Feel the changing seasons surround you as you bathe in the open. For the more shy guests, the nearby Sainokawara Rotenburo is separated by genders—except on Fridays, when it becomes mixed bathing (bathing suits and towels are allowed).

  • 521-3 Kusatsu, Agatsuma District, Gunma 377-1700

Haruna Shrine

If you’re looking for a traditional experience, Takasaki City’s Haruna Shrine may be for you. This famous power spot draws many tourists every year for its mystical properties and long history. Founded in 586, Haruna Shrine, on top of Mount Haruna, shares a connection to the other shrines, both atop their own respective mountains.

This shrine is dedicated to the gods of water, fire, and agriculture and even blesses visitors with business prosperity, good marriage, and fortune in any examinations. Even if you aren’t after blessings, it’s a great place to soak up the vibes of the shrine and surrounding atmosphere.

On the far side of Mount Haruna's slopes, you can also discover Ikaho Onsen, a small hot spring town, famous for its hot spring waters rich in iron content ( Kogane no Yu ) and 365-step stone path that climbs through the town.

  • 849 Harunasan-cho, Takasaki Gunma 〒370-3341

Fukiware Falls

The Gunma outdoors is certainly no stranger to beautiful vistas. Another great spot for the nature lover visiting is the Niagara of Japan, Fukiware Falls. This 7-meter high and 30-meter wide waterfall series has astounded people for ages. Banked on both sides by verdant forests, you can really appreciate the majesty and power of nature.

To get a sense of its size, be sure to cross the suspension bridge over the falls—if you’re brave enough. For those less sure of their feet, or perhaps afraid of heights, you can also enjoy the falls from a safe distance on the promenade. No matter where you view Fukiware Falls from, you’ll have some beautiful photos that last a lifetime. There are also smaller falls nearby that attract their fair share of visitors.

  • Okkai, Tone Town, Numata City, Gunma Prefecture

Onioshidashi Volcanic Park

Onioshidashi means “pushing the demon out” but don’t worry! The ogre that once ruled Mount Asama volcano and surrounding park is long gone . . . probably. This park covers almost 7 square kilometers and the landscape is speckled with black volcanic rocks from the last eruption in 1783. The result of that eruption makes for an unusual and alien world.

In fact, there are some plants and moss that can be found here and not many other places in the world. The aptly named goblin gold is one such moss species and flourished in spring and autumn. Be sure to try to find it, if you’re in the area. The landscape is also beautiful in winter when snow caps the black rocks of the park. If you love the outdoors, this park is a must-see.

  • 1053 Kanbara, Tsumagoi, Agatsuma District, Gunma 377-1593
  • 8:00 - 17:00 (Open Now)

Tanigawadake Ropeway

If you like heights, a visit to Tanigawadake Ropeway is a must-see for you. The top elevation reaches 1,319 meters and the trip crosses almost two and a half kilometers. The one-way ride takes fifteen minutes, which affords you plenty of time to carefully move about the ropeway cabin and take photographs of the surrounding landscape. The folds of the tree-blanketed mountains are especially stunning in autumn when the colors come alive with brilliant crimson and gold.

The ropeway stops at the peak of the mountain where visitors can stay at Tenjindaira Ski Resort. The mountain becomes a ski paradise in winter and from July to November the hiking season is in full swing. You’ll love the sense of thrill and wonder as you soar through the sky on this ropeway.

  • Yubiso, Minakami-machi, Tone-gun, Gunma

Takumi no Sato

Takumi no Sato is the perfect place to visit if you’re aching for a more hands-on experience of Japanese traditional crafts and arts. With over two dozen workshops to participate in, you can create—or just watch—as masters of the craft instruct you on how to make any number of handicrafts. Make washi paper, handmade soba, weave bamboo mats, or dye your own piece of indigo fabric. You’re certain to leave with a one-of-a-kind souvenir that you’ll treasure for years.

  • 847 Sukawa, Minakami, Tone District, Gunma 379-1418

Mount Shirane

Mount Shirane—or Mount Kusatsu-Shirane—is an active volcano in Kusatsu. With eruptions as recent as 2018, this volcano is sometimes off-limits to the public for the danger it can present.

If you’re able to visit the mountain volcano, however, you’ll be amazed by the milky sapphire blue waters of Yu-gama, a volcanic and highly acidic lake at the summit of the volcano. There is even a hiking trail around Yu-gama which is sure to reward any brave hiker with amazing angles for stunning photographs.

2. Climb a Sacred Mountain to Visit Haruna Shrine

Haruna Shrine (榛名神社) is a beautiful, traditional Japanese shrine and one of the oldest in Gunma prefecture. Established in the year 586 in Mt. Haruna, It’s surrounded by lush cedar forests and mountains, and it’s said that some of the oldest cedars in the area could be over 1000 years old. The shrine is dedicated to the Mountain itself, revered as a deity and visitors often come to pray for love, marriage, and childbirth. Visitors to the shrine can purchase good luck charms and amulets, and there’s also an ancient sacred wishing tree where people can write down their wishes. The atmosphere of the shrine is very peaceful and calming, and it is a great place to visit if you are looking for a serene and beautiful place to pray or meditate.

6. Discover a Hidden Treasure at Chinpo Kan

Inside of Chinpo kan

Definitely one of the most unusual and quirky spots in all of Gunma Prefecture is the Chinpo Kan (珍宝館) or penis museum! The name is a play on words with the official meaning of “chinpou” as hidden treasure, with the more colloquial “chinpo” of the word for one’s manhood. Since 1978, over 3,500 objects on display serve the purpose of an equally fun and educational experience, since, innuendo jokes aside, it’s also an interesting visit as many of those objects also have historical and cultural value. But the highlight of the visit is probably the guide and museum manager, who refers to herself as “Mancho”, a portmanteau of “manko” (vagina in Japanese) and “kancho” (manager). She’s known for throwing all kinds of funny sexual jokes during the visit so rest assured, this won’t be a boring experience.

This prefecture has lots of onsen areas and mountains, and its scenic spots are always packed with tourists. Maebashi Jo is one of the seven famous castles of Kanto area, and used to be also called “Mayabashi Jo”. This castle was once abandoned by a flood of the Tonegawa river where a major flood had often occurred. However, it was reconstructed after the permission that is said to be the last one from the Edo Shogunate. Unfortunately, the castle was abandoned again four years later since the regime returned its authority to the emperor, which is called Taisei Hōkan.

Today, at the site where the main enclosure was, there is a prefecture hall of Gunma, while at the site where Ni no Maru (outer citadel) and San no Maru (outermost area of a castle) were, there is a park called Maebashi Kōen. Not to be missed is the “Onsen Mark Cappuccino,” which has the iconic hot spring symbol of Japan drawn on the foam.

Other popular menu items include the Kashiwaya Curry, which presents two flavors in one dish, and the assortment of homemade sweets, making it ideal for lunch or a quick stop while walking around. There are cute Japanese knick-knacks on sale as well!

Oginoya Yokokawa

“Touge no Kamameshi” is one of Japan’s most beloved “ekiben,” which are bento boxes sold at train stations. It first appeared at Yokokawa Station on the Shinetsu Line in 1958, and around 170 million have been sold to date. The secret behind its popularity is the unique container and  remarkable flavors crafted from carefully selected local ingredients.

Touge no Kamameshi comes with nine colorful toppings including chicken, bamboo shoots, shiitake mushrooms, and chestnuts served on rice cooked in dashi broth. The container, which resembles a traditional rice cooking pot, is ceramic and can be brought home and used to cook rice on open flame.

Tofu Cuisine Matsumura

Matsumura is a restaurant specializing in rich tofu made only with natural ingredients. They use painstakingly sourced organic soybeans grown in Japan, along with sea water “nigari” (bittern) from the waters of Oshima, an island off the coast of Izu.

There is a wide menu to enjoy, ranging from tofu salads, gratin, and karaage chicken, to the unmissable “Tosuinabe” hotpot, which is made of rich soy milk warmed to produce a skin (yuba) eaten layer by layer. To fully savor the sweetness of soybeans, Matsumura is a must-visit!

AEON MALL Ota

The AEON MALL Ota is a large-scale shopping mall that hosts around 170 specialty stores and an AEON supermarket. Here, not only can you buy groceries, but also clothing, sundries, CDs, and more.

For tourists visiting Japan, we recommend stores focusing on anime, which is also part of traditional Japanese culture. At AEON MALL Ota, visitors can enjoy anime that is currently hugely popular among tourists! There is also a shop lined with many capsule toy machines, the sight of which will thrill even adults!

There's also Gateau Festa Harada, opened in 1901, a Western-style confectionery store specializing in rusk, and a top-pick for sweet tooths. The “Gateau Rusk Gouter de Roi” is made by baking their special French bread topped with clarified butter and sugar, and is absolutely irresistable!

Gyuya Kiyoshi

One of Gunma’s most exquisite delicacies is “Joshu beef.” Gyuya Kiyoshi offers diners A5-ranked Joshu beef served in “sukiyaki,” a unique Japanese hotpot with a salty-sweet soy sauce-based broth. The delicately marbled Joshu beef melts in the mouth, unleashing a juicy texture with just the right balance of sweetness and umami.

“Shimonita negi,” another Gunma speciality, is added to the hotpot between December and February. It is a type of green onion that is much thicker than regular green onions in Japan, and will absorb the juices and umami of the beef to deliver a piquant mouthful.

Canyons hosts thrilling outdoor activities diving deep into the wilderness of Gunma. The company was started by New Zealander Harris Michael John to combine the adventurous spirit of New Zealand with Japanese hospitality, and it employs many international staff. In the summer, visitors can try canyoning and rafting, along with snowshoe tours in winter.

The most exciting time to raft is between April and June, when the rivers are gushing with snowmelt. These runs are so challenging that world rafting championships have even been held here!

Usaburo Kokeshi

They are all utterly adorable, and are imbued with a warmth thanks to the vibrant coloring and gentle countenance.

Kokeshi painting experiences are also available with online reservations, where you can paint your very own kokeshi using a wooden base fashioned by a craftsman.

Lockheart Castle

Nestled amongst lush forest, Lockheart Castle is an old Scottish castle that was dismantled and rebuilt in Gunma. It is a genuine relic that was originally built in 1829 before being moved to this new location, and is often featured in Japanese TV series and commercials. The “princess dress experience” offers a choice of more than 500 different dresses complete with wigs and tiaras to rent and enjoy a photography session, as well as tuxedos for men and dresses for children.

Daruma dolls are based on the image of Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, sitting in meditation, and are revered symbols of good luck. Daruma are still made in Gunma’s Takasaki as a traditional craft, and the area boasts the highest daruma production volume in Japan. Silk was once a major industry in Gunma, and daruma were deeply respected amongst locals as protectors of silk farming.

Daimonya produces 70,000 daruma annually, all hand-painted by individual master craftspeople. They also host workshops teaching visitors how to paint daruma faces - the left eye is colored while making a wish, and the right eye is filled once the wish comes true.

Afterwards, at the on-site restaurant, treat yourself to a serving of Tsukiyono Craft Beer, brewed with local wheat and the pristine water of the Tanigawa mountains, and served in beautiful glasses crafted by masters.

Tomioka Silk Mill

The Tomioka Silk Mill was a silk reeling factory founded by the government in 1872. The structure remains almost unchanged from its heyday, earning it recognition as a World Heritage Site.

The Japanese government at the time promoted silk exports as part of its push to modernize. This government-run model plant served to produce high-quality raw silk thread while training technical leaders.

The West Cocoon Warehouse, a registered National Treasure, is a two-story brick structure with a wooden frame that once stored cocoons. Now it exhibits historical materials and artifacts with audio guides available in English, Chinese, Korean, and French.

Dinner is made with the highest quality ingredients, such as Joshu beef and “ginhikari,” a variety of rainbow trout from Gunma, and is presented like a work of art.

Kanzanso is a charming hot spring inn with stellar mountain vistas and homely local cuisine. There are rooms with open-air baths, so you can soak in privacy and enjoy the seasonal countryside views.

Gunma’s highlights center around the area’s natural landscape. Perhaps its most significant appeal is the abundance of warm, soothing onsen that bubble up across the prefecture. Try onsen-hopping from major onsen destinations, like Kusatsu and Ikaho , to tiny, remote hot springs nestled on mountainsides and in valleys. Gunma’s lofty peaks provide superb hiking in warm months and powder snow that attracts ski enthusiasts from around the world.

Where is Gunma?

gunma tourist spot

Gunma is very close to Tokyo. Takasaki, the transportation hub of the prefecture, is just 45 minutes by the frequently running shinkansen (bullet train). Gunma is in the geographic center of the country, and the city of Shibukawa is nicknamed the “navel of Japan.”

Nature & Outdoors

gunma tourist spot

Gunma’s towering peaks, dramatic gorges, and spectacular lakes create a haven for outdoor activities. You can explore Gunma in every season: hiking, rafting, canoeing, and canyoning in warmer months or skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and ice fishing in winter. One of the best ways to enjoy Gunma’s beauty is from the comfort of an outdoor onsen bath. Particularly scenic outdoor baths include the riverside public bath at Takaragawa Onsen , the mountainside baths at Manza Onsen , and the springs at Sainokawara Park , located in a lush valley.

Onsen (Hot Springs)

gunma tourist spot

Hot spring bathing is an important part of Japanese culture, and Gunma is particularly blessed with onsen resorts. From large onsen towns, like Kusatsu , Minakami , and Ikaho to tiny, hidden onsen, like Kirizumi Onsen , Kuni no Sato , and Hoshi Onsen ,there's a lot to explore. Bathe in wooden onsen baths within a national park, enjoy open-air bathing along a scenic riverside or opt for a private onsen experience in a traditional ryokan inn. Warming, cultural relaxing, and mineral-rich onsen make a core part of many people’s Gunma getaway.

History & Culture

gunma tourist spot

Gunma has a long and proud history as one of Japan’s most important silk-producing areas. Silk brocade from Kiryu dates back 1,300 years, while Tomioka Silk Mill played a pivotal role in Japan’s industrial revolution. Gunma is also the home of Daruma dolls , handmade wishing dolls that originated hundreds of years ago in Takasaki. There are workshops where you can try making your own. You can also make sosaku kokeshi , modern versions of traditional wooden kokeshi dolls. Art galleries and craft workshops across the prefecture showcase Gunma’s heritage and cement its position as a cultural hub in Japan. Gunma’s onsen towns are steeped in history, too. Ikaho is mentioned in Japan’s oldest surviving collection of poems, Manyoshu, which was compiled in the 8th century. Many of Gunma’s onsen have been hailed for their health-boosting properties, including Kusatsu, which has been popular since the Edo period (1603–1868).

March-May Gunma blooms with cherry blossoms and a range of other flowers. As the snow melts away, the Tone River flows faster, making for thrilling whitewater rafting conditions. The fair weather is perfect for hiking, bungee jumping, and other forms of outdoor adventure. Relax after these activities with a dip in an onsen.

June-August Late July is the height of Oze’s floral season, when yellow daylilies burst open across the marshland. Cool off on hot days by canoeing across Lake Shima . Summer is the ideal time to participate in Gunma’s vibrant festivals and fireworks events, where you can get a taste for local culture.

September-November Cooler temperatures and brightly colored foliage make autumn a popular season for hiking in Gunma. Take the Tanigawadake Ropeway to see the colorful trees below, or hike around Mt. Akagi , Fukiware no Taki Falls , or Mt. Myogi for other spectacular autumn scenes.

December-February Enjoy picture-perfect winter scenery as you bathe in Takaragawa Onsen’s riverside outdoor onsen, where deep snow blankets the surrounding landscape. Bathe in the hot, steamy onsen of Kusatsu before enjoying the evening’s illuminations. For a more active winter experience, enjoy exceptional skiing conditions in the mountains or try ice-fishing at Lake Onuma on Mt. Akagi. In the evening, don’t miss seasonal illuminations across the prefecture.
