Holiday Restrictions For Oversize Loads: How to Avoid Delays
Holiday restrictions for oversize loads are a huge factor you need to consider when transporting over dimensional freight. There are many holidays in a year and numerous states restrict the transportation of oversize freight during these periods. This means shipping large objects during these times of year will require careful planning on your part.
Each state’s unique Department of Transportation (DOT) has slightly different holiday restrictions for oversize loads. However, most state DOTs restrict loads from being transported on these federal holidays:
- New years day
- Memorial day
- Independence day
- Thanksgiving day
- Christmas day
We’ll discuss why there are holiday restrictions for oversize loads and some of the things that you can do to avoid these restrictions when you ship these goods.
Why Are Oversize Loads Restricted On Holidays?
The reason oversize loads are restricted during many holidays is to prevent congestion on roads and highways. During these days of the year, travel is intense because many drivers on the road are meeting their friends and family. This creates heavy traffic conditions which can be quite unsafe.
Oversize loads are an inherently dangerous type of freight to ship due to their size and dimensions. This is why many oversized loads are accompanied by safety equipment such as the following:
- Banners and signs
Many oversized loads are often accompanied by escort vehicles that help warn other drivers on the road of the oversized load’s presence. Because oversize loads are so large and even require other vehicles to travel with them, they can worsen the traffic conditions on holidays.
Oversize loads add to the unsafe driving conditions that already exist during the holidays. Therefore, many states restrict their transportation of these goods for safety reasons. Another reason for the restrictions is that oversize/overweight cargo often travels too slowly to keep up with the flow of traffic.
Semi trucks already move slower than most other vehicles on the road. Not only this, but semi trucks also require more time to speed up and slow down. These problems are amplified for semi trucks carrying oversize freight because the freight is large and weighs so much.
States restrict the movement of oversized freight shipments on holidays as a means to prevent traffic congestion as much as possible.
Check out our article on heavy haul shipping regulations to find out more about the general rules for shipping this kind of freight.
What Holidays Are Oversized Load Shipments Forbidden From Travel?
As we discussed above, states restrict the movement of oversized goods on the federal holidays we listed above. As a refresher, those holidays consist of the following:
Many businesses around the country recognize these holidays which is why so people many are able to travel on them. That said, there are some other holidays that states restrict the transportation of heavy haul freight on.
Some of these holidays are federal while others are not and they include the following:
- Martin Luther King Day
- Washington’s birthday
- Good Friday
- Election day
- Columbus day
- Veterans day
- Presidents day
Numerous states around the U.S. have additional stipulations regarding heavy haul runtimes. We’ve listed some of these stipulations below:
- If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday following it will also be considered a holiday and transportation of heavy haul goods will be restricted.
- If the holiday falls on a Monday, transportation of heavy haul freight on the preceding Friday should is allowed until noon.
- Transportation of heavy haul freight is permitted on certain holidays, but a curfew restricting the hours of operation is in place.
- Transportation of heavy haul freight is permitted on certain holidays, but certain roads and highways forbid heavy haul shipments from traveling on them.
Every state is different, so never assume the runtime restrictions are the same for every state. Always research the holiday runtimes for the state or states that your freight will travel through.
How To Avoid Runtime Holiday Restrictions For Oversize Loads
One of the worst parts about holiday runtime restrictions for oversize loads is that freight shipments typically pick up this time of year. The months of August to October are particularly busy times of the year for the freight industry.
To show how much freight is shipped during these times of the year, consider the data in the table below.
Peak Season Statistics
Despite these times of the year being busy for regular and oversize freight alike, we have some tips that can help you get around the runtime restrictions.
1. Ship Before the Holiday
Shipping oversized freight before a major holiday is one way of avoiding holiday runtime restrictions. That said, organizing and preparing an oversized shipment is a lengthy and difficult process.
Some of the things that have to be done to prepare an oversized shipment includes:
- Finding a route that oversized freight can travel down
- Securing the equipment to transport and load the oversized freight
- Taking the time to apply for and fill out an oversized permit
The longer it takes to make these preparations, the more likely the freight will be in transit during the holiday you’re trying to avoid. When organizing a shipment before a holiday, make sure that you’ll have ample time to make the necessary preparations for the shipment.
Reach out to us at (855) 490-2433 or fill out our quick form and a live agent will be in touch shortly to carefully plan your route and secure a carrier ASAP!
2. Ship After the Holiday
When you know that your shipment of oversized freight will be in transit on a holiday, consider waiting after the holiday to ship the goods out instead. You don’t want your receiver to wait too long, so make sure to only use this strategy when the holiday is absolutely unavoidable.
Communicating with your receiver that their shipment will be delayed by the holidays and that you’ll ship their oversized goods the day after is also important. One benefit of shipping after a holiday is that you’ll have more time to plan your shipments out.
3. Communicate With the Receiver About Possible Holiday Restrictions
If you’re shipping your oversize freight out to a customer before an approaching holiday, you should communicate that holiday runtime restrictions can be a factor. Doing so will inform the receiver of the oversize freight that it might take their goods slightly longer to arrive than usual due to the runtime restrictions.
Not informing your receiver of these delays may cause them to be disappointed and even upset when they see the estimated delivery date that after booking their shipment with you.
Read our article about heavy haul freight brokers to discover how they can help you avoid holiday runtime restrictions and other ways they can organize your shipments for you.

Thanksgiving 2023 Oversized Freight Travel Restrictions By State
While many of us are enjoying a turkey dinner with family and friends, many drivers are on the road carrying seasonal gifts, holiday baking items, winter gear and the essentials we need every day.
Standard freight carried in a dry van or open-deck trailer travels as usual on Thanksgiving, although you should expect to pay more to find a driver willing to work on the holiday.
Moving oversize freight on a holiday is more complicated. Oversize freight always requires a permit to travel through every state and local jurisdiction on its route. On Thanksgiving, some states forbid moving oversize freight, and most permit offices are closed.
It’s critical to understand which states allow over-dimensional freight travel on Thanksgiving before setting out. The last thing you need is to accrue delays and fees on one of the year’s busiest travel days.
Our experience at Anderson Trucking Service (ATS) includes moving over-dimensional freight every day of the year, including holidays. And while we give our drivers as much holiday time as we can, it is unavoidable for some of them to be on the road on Thanksgiving.
This article lays out the Thanksgiving travel restrictions for all 50 states and includes a link to learn more. Using this information will help you stay in compliance with local restrictions this holiday season.
Happy turkey day!

Every year, CDOT embarks on hundreds of construction projects across the state, and that doesn’t even include the numerous maintenance activities they conduct every day to keep the highways safe. With every construction zone comes equipment, workers, and daily changes in the road and alignment you may be traveling. As a result, it’s critical you do your part to make the cone zones safe. Lower speed limits, flaggers and police enforcement are used to help keep work zones safe, but motorists still must drive responsibly to keep themselves and our workers safe.
Use these safe-driving tips when traveling through cone zones. Remember: In Colorado, the fines are doubled for most infractions in a work zone.
Expect the unexpected – Normal speed limits may be reduced, traffic lanes may be changed, and people may be working on or near the road.
Slow down – Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes.
Don’t tailgate – Keep a safe distance between your car and the car ahead of you. The most common crash in a highway work zone is a rear-end collision, so leave two car lengths between you and the car in front of you.
Be aware of constructions crews – Keep a safe distance between your vehicle, and the construction workers and their equipment.
Heed signs – The warning signs are there to help you and other drivers move safely through the work zone. Observe the posted signs until you see the one that says you’ve left the work zone.
Obey flaggers – Flaggers know what’s best for moving traffic safely in the work zone. A flagger has the same authority as a regulatory sign; you can be cited for disobeying his or her directions.
Stay alert and minimize distractions – Dedicate your full attention to the roadway, and avoid changing radio stations or using cellphones while driving in a work zone.
Keep with the traffic flow – Help maintain traffic flow and posted speeds by merging as soon as possible. Don’t drive right up to the lane closure and then try barge in.
Plan your drive – Schedule enough time to drive safely, and check radio, television and websites for traffic information. Expect delays, and leave early so you can reach your destination on time.
Be patient and stay calms – Work zones aren’t there to personally inconvenience you. Remember: The work zone crew members are working to improve the road and make your future drive better.

Local restrictions apply in Boise, Caldwell, Idaho Falls and other cities. Holiday travel may depend on dimensions and will referenced in the permit.
Idaho Road Conditions And Closures
The Idaho Transporation Department’s policy is to plan, design, construct, maintain and operate safe and efficient Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) zones. Goals and objectives of the Idaho Transportation Department are to provide a safer environment for highway workers and the travelling public, work toward “zero deaths” in work zones, maintain or reduce project maximum travel delays stated in the construction contract, implement training programs for those involved in planning, designing, constructing, maintaining and providing Law Enforcement in work zones and managing incidents.
Don’t Be A Distracted Driver – To protect yourself, it’s important that you dedicate your full attention to the roadway while traveling in a construction zone.
Don’t Forget Special Penalties Apply – When you are in a construction zone, there is an additional $50 penalty for breaking the posted speed limit. Speeding in a construction zone is particularly dangerous since workers may be present just a few feet away from your vehicle. In addition, heavy work vehicles are unable to stop quickly. For example, a loaded 80,000 lb. tractor-trailer requires almost 50% more stopping distance than a standard passenger vehicle. Remember too that posted speed limits in construction zones assume that you are in perfect weather conditions. If the weather is poor, you may need to drive even slower. Keep your speed consistent with traffic flow and do not resume your normal driving speed until you see signs indicating that it is safe to do so.

When it comes to safety on the road in Maine, the rules one should follow are the same like with other states in order to avoid crashes and fatal injuries. An average of 500 crashes occur each year in Maine work zones, resulting in several fatalities. Another 200 are injured. Workers in these areas are vulnerable to serious injury, as are vehicle occupants.

Safety comes first.
MDOT crews that work on highways undergo extensive safety training, but even this sometimes isn’t enough.
Drivers should:
Decrease speed
Obey signalization and work zone speed limits
When possible take alternate route
Significant fines for work zone violations from $250 and up
One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, including Saturday and Sunday. Travel is restricted for all over-dimensional permit vehicles on Holidays and Long Holidays. The specific hours of restriction for each Holiday/Long Holiday will be designated on each permit.

Nebraska Road Conditions
Work Zone Safety Reminders
- Drive smart in work zones!
- Don’t crowd – Most work zone crashes in Nebraska involve rear-end collisions.
- Leave 2 seconds of braking time between you and the car in front of you.
- Day and Night:
o Turn your headlights on.
o Pay Attention.
o Buckle up. Safety belts only work when you use them.
Work Zone Safety for Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV)
- Fatal crashes in work zones involved at least one large truck.
- Slow down, maintain extra following space, and be prepared to stop.
- Obey all work zone signs and signals.
- Scan ahead for changing traffic patterns, and be alert to vehicles entering your blind spots.
- Keep a sharp eye out for road workers and flag crews.
- Always signal and brake to give other drivers plenty of time to notice your intent.
- Driving too fast for weather or road conditions or failing to slow down for curves or ramps create risks for spills and rollovers, as well as crashes.
- Buckle up every time.

Holiday Travel Restrictions for ODVs
Note: The holiday hour restrictions as described in the above charts are in effect only during hours of high traffic volume associated with these specific holidays. The actual restricted timeframes may or may not be on the observed holiday. The chart below describes when the holiday hours, weekend hours, and hours of darkness restrictions are in effect when the observed holiday falls on different days of the week. Other common state and federal holidays are intentionally not included in this list and therefore holiday hour restrictions do not apply to them, though the normal restrictions for weekend hours and hours of darkness do apply. These restrictions correspond to WASHTO guidelines.
One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, Monday through Friday. No OS/OW permit travel on weekends and New Hampshire State Holidays (New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day).
In any work zone along any road, normal speed limits may be reduced, traffic lanes may be changed, and people and vehicles may be working on or near the road.
Diamond-shaped orange warning signs are posted in advance of road construction projects. Slow down! Be alert! Pay attention to the signs!
A “flagger ahead” warning sign may be posted in the work zone. Be prepared to slow down, stop, change lanes, etc. Be prepared to obey the flagger’s directions.
When indicated, merge as soon as possible. Don’t zoom right up to the lane closure, then try to barge in.
Slow down when the signs say to. A car traveling 60 m.p.h. travels 88 feet per second. If you’re going 60 m.p.h., and you pass a sign that states, “Road Work 1,500 feet,” you’ll be in that work zone in 17 seconds.
The most common crash in a highway work zone is the rear-end collision, so remember to leave two seconds of braking distance between you and the car in front of you.
Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and traffic barriers, trucks, construction equipment and workers.
One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset 7 days a week of less than 10′ wide. Until noon on Saturday and Sunday if load width is greater than 10′, up to 14′.
No movement is allowed on the following dates for loads exceeding 14’ 6” high, 80’ 0” long, and/or 10’ 0” wide in observation of the listed holidays in the State of Florida in accordance with F.A.C. 14-26 as follows: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. If any of these holidays fall on a Saturday, the preceding Friday shall also be observed as a holiday. If any of these holidays fall on a Sunday, the following Monday shall also be observed as a holiday.
No movement in Hillsboro and Date Counties from 7:00 am – 9:00 am and 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Other restrictions may be imposed on the permit.
Florida Road Conditions
Drivers must slow down or move over for stopped emergency vehicles and work zones. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says that drivers breaking that law have caused more than 200 crashes every year.
Florida’s ‘Move Over’ law requires drivers to slow down 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit or move over a lane for emergency and utility vehicles. The crew members just want to get the job done safe and sound.
Regulatory speed signs in rural areas (interstate and non-interstate) are to be preceded by a “Reduced Speed Ahead” sign positioned as follows: Interstate (Rural) – 1000 ft. in advance; Non-Interstate (Rural) – 500 ft. in advance. Urban areas ordinarily do not require an advance sign, however, the sign may be included at the designer’s option.
An oversize permit shall not be valid for the operation of a vehicle or combination of vehicles on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day and the Friday before Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and the Friday before Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the operation shall not be permitted on the following Monday. If the holiday falls on a Saturday, the operation shall not be permitted on the preceding Friday. Waivers to these restriction may be granted.
An oversize permit shall not be valid for the operation of a vehicle or combination of vehicles: during the nighttime hours of sunset to sunrise; when visibility is limited to a distance of less than 500 feet during the daylight hours of sunrise to sunset; and when hazardous road conditions exist.
Running time : Sunrise to sunset, Monday through Saturday (Note: overweight only can have continuous travel on Interstate and 4-lane hwys, pilot car required) Restrictions: Movement prohibited 7:00am-9:00am and 4:00pm-6:00pm in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Española. Other restrictions may apply. No travel on major holidays.
A “Permit” authorizes the movement of an oversize and/or overweight vehicle for a specific time period on permissible hauling days. Special Hauling permits may also authorize the movement of Manufactured / Modular homes not included under Building Movement Permits.
A “Permissible Hauling Day” is any normal working day, Monday through Friday, during the daylight hours between one-half hour before sunrise and one-half hour after sunset when weather conditions are favorable. No movements are allowed on Saturdays*, Sundays or the following holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day or after 12 noon the day preceding Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day. The day preceding means any normal working day, Monday through Fridays. No travel is allowed at night between the hours of one-half hour after sunset and one-half hour before sunrise unless otherwise specified.
*Over-dimensional and overweight moves that are within 12 feet in width, 85 feet in length, legal height, and which can maintain normal highway speeds may be authorized by permit to move from ½ hour before sunrise until 12 noon on Saturday unless such Saturday falls on a holiday set forth above. Overweight moves that are not over-dimensional and are within 125 percent of legal weight as defined by Section 385 of the new York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, and which can maintain traffic flow speed, are not restricted as to times of travel or days of travel as set forth above.
Permitted vehicles may travel Monday through Saturday, sunrise to sunset. No Sunday travel without specific permit. Holiday travel prohibited for overweight (exceeding 112,000 lb.) or any overdimentions from noon the weekday before until noon on the weekday after the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
