The open season for ducks begins on Saturday 16th March 2024 at sunrise and ends on Sunday 30th June 2024 at sunset. Chowilla Game Reserve, Morook Game Reserve and Loch Luna Game Reserve only allow hunting on certain dates (see below for details).

Time permitted for hunting

On the days that hunting is allowed, it’s between sunrise and sundown.

Below are the specific restrictions that apply to each reserve, including links to maps showing any exclusion zones.

There are some species in SA that are only allowed to be hunted on the open season, while others can be hunted any time during the year. Hunters can hunt game species such as stubble quail and Pacific black duck during the open seasons. Also, they can hunt deer, camels and starlings at any time during the year.

Kangaroo island offers a flat, mostly level terrain with pigs, deer, cats and ducks in the creeks. Fishing for marron is available at an additional cost.

As long as you do not go beyond the shed, you won’t need to use a four-wheel drive to reach the property. To get around the property you’ll need a 4-wheel-drive. However, bring your own recovery equipment as you’ll be on your own.

Temperature and Rainfall

The winter temperatures are 6-20 degrees, with an average of 350mm per year in rainfall. Summer temperatures are 22-37 degrees. Pigs do best in the winter.

The Facilities

The shed comes with a fridge with a three-ring gas stove with kettle, two camp stretches, chairs, stools, & trays. The shed has been insulated, so it is quite toasty and warm in there. The area also has an outdoor drop toilet as well as a barbecue pit.

There is a nice sheltered area behind the shed with a firepit.

Winters can be cold, wet and wild. It is best to pack warm clothing and waterproof gumboots.

Even though the temperatures can reach mid-30s in summer, it’s best to keep a few warm clothes in your closet for evenings. Also, waterproof jackets are advisable.

Winter is the best time to visit as pigs will travel around the property following the first heavy rainfall.

Water Valley Game Reserve

Situated approximately four hours away from Adelaide in the South East region of South Australia. The hunting area on this unique property is over 400 square kilometers, making it the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

In Australia, all deer species are found in good numbers. These include Chital, Fallow Deer, Hog Deer, Red Deer, Rusa Deer, and Sambar Deer. Clients have collected world-class trophy animals. Due to the high number of trophy animals and extensive scrubland, many animals of trophy class survive every year – only to grow bigger. Many trophies have died from old age.

Bool Lagoon Game Reservation

Bool Lagoon Game Reserve lies in the south-east of South Australia, approximately 17 km south from Naracoorte. The seasonal lagoon is listed under Ramsar Convention as a wetland of national and international importance.

Open Season Restrictions: The entire 2024 duck season will be closed to hunting.

Bucks Lake Game Reserve

Bucks Lake Game Reserve lies on the Limestone Coast, approximately 37 km south of Mt Gambier. The lake is flooded by Lake Bonney SE during the season and has 52 native bird species.

Chowilla Game Reserve

The following restrictions apply to the open season in the entire reserve:

For safety reasons, any area within a radius of 500 metres centred on the Chowilla Homestead (homestead), the shearing shed at Lock 6 of the River Murray, Chowilla Creek Regulator and Pipeclay Weir. This includes any part of the creeks, or waterbodies, within 500 meters of these sites.

Currency Creek Game Reserve

Currency Creek Game Reserve lies on the edge of Goolwa in the River Murray Channel, about 90 km away from Adelaide. Currency Creek Game Reserve, a coastal freshwater Lake, is part of the Albert Ramsar Wetland and Coorong Lakes Alexandrina.

Open Season Restrictions: General open season conditions are applicable.

Lake Robe Game Reserve

The Lake Robe game reserve is located on the Limestone Coast, 5 km south-west of Robe. It is next to Little Dip Conservation Park. The Reserve is home to Lake Robe, a hypersaline saltwater lake that hosts a variety of waterbirds. The Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia lists it as a wetland of National Importance.

Loch Luna Game Reserve

The Loch Luna Game Reserve, located north of Cobdogla in the Riverland, is a wetland. The area of the reserve is approximately 2,000 hectares and it consists of lakes and small waterways.

Moorook Reserve Game Reserve

Moorook Game Reserve, located in the Riverland near Cobdogla on the River Murray Floodplain, includes a medium sized lake named Wachtels Lagoon. This is a wetland that is permanently filled by the River Murray. Moorook Game Reserve lies about 220km from Adelaide, and 70km from the Victorian border.

An area of Wachtels Lagoon is the land and water within the lagoon and bounded, by a line, starting at E 442748 and N 6210926 and continuing south-east to E 443079 and N 6210458. Then, moving south-east to E 423268 and N 6209307 and then west to E442454 and N 6209208, before heading north-east to E441377 and N 6209958.

Mud Islands Game Reserve

The Mud Islands Game Reserve consists of 10 small islands located in Lake Alexandrina. It is part of the Coorong, Lakes Alexandrina, and Albert Ramsar Wetland. It is situated around 19 km south-east from Goolwa. Only by boat is it accessible.

Poocher Swamp Game Reserve

Poocher Swamp Game Reserve, located west of Bordertown and near the South Australia/Victoria border is a small game reserve. It is filled from Tatiara Creek and fills up 7 out of 10 years. This is one of the few remaining permanent river-red gum wetlands on the upper south east of South Australia.

Tolderol Game Reserve

While facilities are minimal, the reserve enables multi-day hunts with bush camping permitted. Make sure to bring ample supplies of water and fuel when venturing into the far reaches of Tolderol.

Chowilla Game Reserve protects 25,000 hectares of the River Murray floodplain where it meets the Darling River. As well as conservation, it offers limited hunting in certain zones. Access is walk-in only here, with no vehicles permitted.

Prime targets include foxes, rabbits and hares. The grassy woodlands interspersed with wetlands make for great stalking on foot. Duck hunting is also permitted in season on designated ponds and creeks. High-visibility clothing is mandatory while hunting.

The remote setting means self-sufficiency is required at Chowilla. Hunters need to be fully prepared with camping supplies.

The advantage is the ability to immerse in the tranquil wilderness, pursuing game for days without encountering another person. Just beware of snakes and other nasties drawn to the waterways.

Moorook Game Reserve

Moorook Game Reserve lies between the Murray River and Lake Alexandrina, east of Adelaide. It covers over 20,000 hectares of beautiful grassy woodland and samphire flats. There are great opportunities for walk-in hunting of rabbits, foxes and cats.

The open terrain provides longer visibility but less cover than wooded areas when stalking. Hunting dogs can be highly effective in the reserve. Their ability to flush prey from grassy areas and retrieve quarry is a bonus.

4WD camping is permitted in designated zones within Moorook. The scenic lakeside location makes it a peaceful setting to base hunting trips.

A highlight is watching the stunning sunsets across Lake Alexandrina at the end of each day in the field. Just be prepared for the seasonal crowds of tourists that flock to the region.

For hunters who enjoy coastal environments, Loch Luna Game Reserve near Robe is a great option. Located on Lake Robe and the Southern Ocean, its 2,200 hectares include sandy heaths, wetlands and grassy banks. The habitat provides shelter for decent numbers of rabbits, foxes and feral cats.

Access is walk-in only through the reserve, meaning hunters need to be self-sufficient on foot. The coastal scenery provides a picturesque backdrop with views over the water possible from elevated dunes and banks. Good fitness helps cover the ground here with loose sandy trails.

Loch Luna allows camping, making multi-day trips easy. A great option is combining mornings hunting the heaths with afternoon fishing trips on Lake Robe or the nearby beaches. Just remember to pack the insect repellent during the warmer months when mosquitoes swarm.

Another coastal reserve worth visiting is Currency Creek, less than an hour south of Adelaide. It spans 7,700 hectares between the Finniss River and Lake Alexandrina. There are grassy woodlands, samphire flats and coastal dunes sheltering pest species like rabbits, foxes and cats.

Access to hunting areas is walk-in only through scenic trails. The open grassy areas combined with low coastal vegetation allow for longer sight lines when hunting compared to dense bushland. Permits available over the counter make Currency Creek convenient for quick trips from Adelaide.

Camping is permitted in certain zones within the reserve. The proximity to the ocean provides cool sea breezes in the hot summer months. Sunrises and sunsets over the water make for spectacular backdrops when hunting the coastal heath. It is certainly one of the most picturesque areas to pursue game in South Australia.

Similar sandy landscapes can be found at Lake Robe Game Reserve just northwest of Robe township. The 630-hectare reserve borders Lake Robe and the Southern Ocean. Its undulating dunes, grassy flats and stands of low trees provide an ideal habitat for introduced species.

Rabbits, foxes and feral cats are common. Access is by foot, with no vehicle access permitted. The sound of the ocean is always present, adding to the serene atmosphere. Care must be taken around lake shorelines and wet areas where the sandy substrate can turn to mud.

Lake Robe Reserve has basic camping available, making it suitable for overnight hunts. The proximity to Robe township means stores and pubs provide comfort at day’s end.

But days spent roaming the sandy landscape away from any crowds make the reserve highly appealing. The simple pleasure of a beach walk or swim after successful hunts here is hard to beat.

South Australia provides awesome hunting experiences across many different environments, from outback to forest to coast. Each location has its own appeal, from species available to terrain and accessibility.

Remote reserves enable multi-day wilderness trips in far-flung corners of the state. Others provide quick getaways from Adelaide or opportunities to hunt less travelled areas.

Types of Hunts in Australia

Australia has a wide variety of game animals. It is best known for water buffalo hunts in the Northern Territories. On these extremely remote and large tracts of aboriginal lands, you can pursue water buffalo, banteng, scrub bulls, wild dogs, wild boar, and other feral species.

In eastern Australia, you can hunt free-range axis deer, red stag, rusa deer, feral goat, wild ram, and dingos in Queensland. We also have access to some estate hunts on challenging properties for red stag, fallow deer, and rusa deer. Sambar and hog deer are also available on free-range and estate hunts.

Our outfitters can also arrange deep sea fishing charters and touring activities in popular areas such as the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Great Barrier Reef, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.

Where to Hunt in Australia

Northern Territories: We access the Northern Territories from Darwin. A 5-hour drive will get you to camp on over a million-acre aboriginal concession and private land lease in remote Australia. The vast and remote land has a massive river system with many creeks and water holes, making it an ideal habitat for water buffalo, banteng, scrub bulls, wild dogs, and feral boar. Banteng camp is on the pristine coastline of the Arafura Sea. Fishing charters are also available from this camp.

Queensland: We conduct these hunts in two areas.

We access the hunting area in Northern Queensland from Townsville or Mackay airports for axis deer, feral boar, dingo, Javan rusa stags, and feral goat. Excellent deep-sea and reef fishing can be added to this hunt.

Southeast Queensland is accessed from Brisbane or Toowoomba Wellcamp airports and is in the heart of great red stag country, with free-range and estate properties. Fallow deer, Javan rusa stag, dingo, feral boar, and longhorn ox trophies are available.

Best Times to Hunt in Australia

In the Northern Territories, hunts generally occur from July to September, the dry winter season in Australia. Before July is the wet season, and it’s tough to access this area when it’s muddy and flooded.

Hunts in Northern Queensland for the axis deer can take place year-round. For the rusa stags, May through July are the best times as they are in hard antler. You can hunt rusa deer in August and September, but fighting during the rut can cause damaged capes in August and September.

Hunts in Southern Queensland for red stag and fallow deer occur from March to April during peak roar season.

Mid-September to December is typically the off-season.

We can arrange combination hunts for all species with custom packages.

Northern Territories Australia Outfitters and Hunts

Fly to Darwin, where the outfitter will pick you up for the 5-hour drive to camp. We can also arrange a helicopter or small fixed-wing ride to camp. You’ll hunt over a million acres of aboriginal land or private lease land. Once you get your trophy water buffalo, add a second trophy buffalo or a scrub bull and pursue wild boar, wild dogs, brumbies, and donkeys. You can also hunt banteng in this area from a different camp, reached by driving or helicopter.

Each day, you will access the hunting area by trucks and side by sides. The concession has a massive river system with many creeks and water holes. Game is very plentiful in this ideal habitat. You will spot some herds of buffalo and other game from the vehicles, but most of the hunting will be spot and stalk walking down productive-looking creeks, making for an exciting adventure. It is common to shoot multiple trophy buffalo and several other species on this hunt. The average trophy buffalo will score 95-110 SCI – very nice trophies.

For such a remote area, the camp is well-appointed, consisting of safari tents with beds, lights, tables, and chairs for each hunter, a hard-sided cooking and eating building, flush toilets, and hot showers, and is entirely fenced and well-lit. A camp cook will prepare great meals. Campfires at night under the sky are a great way to end the day.

Queensland Australia Hunts and Outfitters

In Northern Queensland, we have access to two large free-range properties for axis deer and rusa stags. Axis deer will be 30-inch class and can be hunted year-round. The rusa deer are typically hunted for 32-inch and up trophies between May and July, with some giant 36-inch plus taken. Spot and stalk hunting is the norm. Excellent accommodations and meals will round out your trip. Fly to Townsville or Mackay, and the outfitter will pick you up there.

In South-Eastern Queensland, we focus on red stag hunts during the roar in March and April. The most popular trip is to combine an estate stag with a free-range stag. You can also add a fallow deer, dingo, wild boar, or an early-season rusa stag. Spot and stalk hunting is the norm. Excellent accommodations and meals will round out your trip. Fly to Brisbane or Toowoomba, and the outfitter will pick you up there. It is also easy to tour the Gold Coast, Great Barrier Reef, and the Sunshine Coast from this area. We can also arrange deep-sea fishing charters.

We can also arrange hog deer (permits in April or May) and sambar hunts with our Queensland hunts.

Best Hunting Locations In South Australia

South Australia is a great place to hunt introduced and wild game in a variety of environments. There are many habitats that support rabbits, deer and ducks.

The hunt for sambar or foxes can be thrilling for both experienced and novice hunters.

Conservation hunting is a great way to control pests like cats and bunnies while also providing a fun activity. For this reason, several reserves and parks manage hunting access carefully.

Some locations allow for multi-day camping hunts in remote areas to immerse yourself fully in the bush. This list includes both quality hunting and beautiful scenery.

There are many options for hunters, from day-long hunts near Adelaide to long camps in the Outback.

Fleurieu Peninsula

Deep Creek Conservation Park, in southern Fleurieu, is the top destination for deer hunters. The park covers 90,000 acres of rugged terrain with fallow and red deer populations.

Only from February through October is the hunting season. Hunting permits must be obtained. The park provides multi-day wilderness adventures with deer trails to follow in forests and open hillsides.

Lake Robe Game Reserve, a smaller park, is a great place to walk in and hunt pest species such as rabbits and foxes.

Mount Lofty Ranges

Mount Crawford Forest is the most notable feature in the northern ranges. Permits are required to hunt sambar in designated zones.

These steep ridges, gullies and slopes covered in stringybark forests offer a challenging stalking terrain. Sambars are in top physical condition here during autumn.

Tolderol Game Reserve

The reserve allows for multi-day hunting with the option of bush camping. Bring plenty of fuel and water when you venture into Tolderol’s far-flung regions.

Chowilla Game Reserve

Chowilla is a remote area, so self-sufficiency will be required. Camp supplies are essential for hunters.

It is possible to spend days in the wilderness, hunting game without ever meeting another person. Beware of snakes, and other nasty creatures that are drawn to waterways.

Moorook Reserve Game Reserve

In designated areas of Moorook, 4WD camping can be done. It is a tranquil setting for hunting trips because of the scenic lakeside location.

The stunning sunsets over Lake Alexandrina are a highlight of every day spent in the field. Be prepared for seasonal crowds that will flock to the area.

Lake Robe Reserve offers basic camping, which is ideal for overnight hunting. Robe township is close by, so there are pubs and shops to help you unwind at the end of the day.

The reserve is a great place to spend a day exploring the sand dunes away from the crowds. After a successful hunt, the simple pleasure of a walk on the beach or scuba diving is unbeatable.

Deep Creek Conservation Park

Permits are required for hunting red and fallow deer in the park. Deer can be difficult to track and access due to the rugged terrain.

Bush camping is allowed in certain zones. Hunters must be self-sufficient when accessing the interior of the park on foot or in a 4WD.

Coorong National Park

The Coorong National Park, which stretches over 130 km along South Australia’s south coast offers premier hunting opportunities.

Hunters face a challenging terrain. The sightlines can be affected by dunes that are over 30 metres high. While dense mallee thickets impede movement, samphire samphires hide holes and mud.

Hunting zones are best accessed by four-wheel-drive vehicles, although there are also areas that allow only walk-ins.

Be sure to bring all the supplies you need, due to the isolation. It is worth the effort to stalk foxes in shifting sands, or wait for rabbits in blinds.

Yorke Peninsula

Yorke Peninsula, with its “boot-shaped” peninsula that juts into Spencer Gulf to the north of Adelaide, is a region rich in hunting opportunities.

There are many foxes and rabbits in the scrublands, farms and coastal areas of the peninsula. Warrenben Conservation Park and Southern Yorke Peninsula Farmlands are prime locations.

Warrenben Conservation Park is a great habitat for mallee, with sand tracks that wind through low vegetation. In the distance, foxes thrive and provide stalking opportunities.

Camping is available in the park for hunters who want to stay longer. High clearance 4WDs are able to traverse deep into mallee, away from main routes.

Australia is a wonderful hunting destination: a high level of service combined with a great number of wild and pristine areas. Many of the hunting species have been introduced here since the XVIII century by the European settlers. These include the traditional game as the deer, wild oxen (banteng and water buffalo), and invasive species, such as rabbit/hare and wild pigs.

Hunting in Australia is legal all year round. However the most popular season for hunting lasts from April through September. During this period it is possible to harvest all game species inhabiting Australia, plus it is the most productive season for trophy hunting.

The city of arrival is Darwin (Northern Territory) or Brisbane (Kingham). Two domestic flights will be required to get to the hunting area from Darwin, followed by a car transfer. The car transfer from Brisbane lasts for about 2 hours.

You will hunt by spot-and-stalk in Australia. Once a fresh track is found, the stalk begins. For example, buffalo stalking may take up to several hours. The hunters, experienced in hunting the African buffalo, are often surprised by the power and resistance strength of the Australian bull.

ACCOMMODATION

When hunting in the wild corners of Northern Territories, you will be accommodated in the large double tents. Each tent has beds, chairs, table, sink with a mirror and electricity (provided by a generator). The tents have an en-suite bathroom with a solar powered shower. There is a cook/manager at the camp. In Kingham the hunters stay in a comfortable lodge with separate bedrooms, dining room and a deck for socializing. There is a cook and other staff on camp.

Northern Territory: a large state, taking up around 1/6 of Australia. In the dry season its rivers form clean creeks that are a favorite habitat of buffalo, wild ox and wild boar. Kingham: the private fenced hunting grounds, located in a valley between two rivers. The most convenient hunting destination in Australia – 10 out of 14 species living here are trophy game.

About hunting in Australia

With tropical rainforests in the northeast, mountain ranges in the southeast, and dry desert in the “Red Center,” Australia is a huge continent with a variety of terrain. The semi-arid land commonly known as the “Outback” makes up by far the largest portion of land. Australia is both the driest inhabited continent and has one of the world’s lowest population densities, just 2.8 people per square kilometer, most of whom live along the coasts. Hunting in this fabled land is a true adventure. The country has a number of huntable native species including kangaroo and dingo, but most of its big game is non-native and can be hunted any time of year. The biggest draws are water buffalo, banteng, feral boar, and a host of deer species, including sambar, hog deer, red deer, fallow deer, and rusa deer. The water buffalo is a truly impressive quarry for a big-game hunter, with horns that can grow up to 60 inches wide. These are also tough animals, requiring large calibers and strong bullets to bring down.

Planning your trip

U.S. citizens don't need visas to enter Australia. However, they do need to obtain what is called an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), which basically works like an online visa. The ETA costs AU$20 and may be applied for at http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ . Once you fill out the application and pay the fee, your application is processed instantly and linked to your passport number. You should get an e-mail confirming your visa within a few minutes.

Health considerations

Routine vaccines are recommended for travel to Australia; malaria prophylaxis is not required.

Firearm importation

If you want to use your own firearms during your hunt in Australia, you need to obtain two permits: An international visitors firearms permit (to allow to possess, carry and use firearms during your stay); and an import permit (to allow you to bring firearms into the country). Application should be made to the police of the Australian State or Territory you will be hunting in initially. For example, if you plan to hunt or compete initially in the state of Victoria (even though you may later visit other State/s or Territory), then make application to Victoria Police for both permits. If you plan to move between different States and Territories thereafter and have a permit in one jurisdiction you may need to obtain an International Visitors Permit from each State / Territory you visit. Check with the respective police as requirements do vary between jurisdictions. Application forms can be obtained from police in every jurisdiction. Contact the respective state’s police firearm registry, found here: https://ssaa.org.au/licensing/firearms-registries/ Apply well in advance of your visit, at least 6 weeks before your arrival. This will ensure that Australian police will have time to process your application and issue your permits. You will require these documents to produce to Customs Officials on arrival in Australia.

Upon arrival

Once you have cleared immigration, declare your firearm and ammunition to Customs and to Australian police. Be sure to have copies of all your firearms paperwork and forms in your possession; it’s also a good idea to have spare copies in your gun case.

Australia is a vast and varied country, and hunting methods vary by region and species. Deer are usually hunted by spot-and stalk on foot or followed by tracking. Hunters also sometimes hunt from elevated tree stands or platforms. Large animals such as water buffalo are usually hunted safari-style; the hunters cover ground either by vehicle or on foot until a buffalo is spotted, then a stalk is made. Shots on buffalo tend to be close, usually under 100 yards.

Firearms and Clothing

Different states have different minimum legal calibers for deer hunting in Australia. A .270 caliber will meet the minimum standard anywhere in Australia. As an ethical hunter, you should always check with state authorities to ensure that you remain compliant with current regulations. Some larger species such as buffalo require significantly larger calibers, including .300 Winchester Magnum and .375 Holland & Holland Magnum.

For hunts in the Northern Territory where it can get very hot, wear long-sleeve lightweight cotton hunting shirts and pants in camo or dark green. A wide-brimmed hat is recommended, as are lightweight hiking boots, powerful sunscreen, and tropical-strength insect repellent.

After the hunt

The easiest way to export your trophies is to have your outfitter recommend a taxidermist who can prepare the skins and horns for shipping and process the required paperwork. Plan on a delay of several months before receiving your trophies.

Our Australian outfitter recently acquired a new concession out of Darwin. The nearly 2 million acres of Aboriginal land has not been hunted in many years, and he’s one of only two outfitters exclusively licensed to operate here. He says it’s the best concession he’s ever seen.

A five hour drive from Darwin, the area is loaded with world-class banteng and water buffalo. On a recent hunt he got within bow-range of 39 trophy bull banteng in one day! The water buffalo can be hunted in the swamp or in the forested edges. The land is thick with wild pigs, too. And it’s made for bowhunting. Expect shot opportunities at very high-end trophy banteng bulls to come inside 20 yards.

The camp is located on the coast and comes with hot showers, flush toilets, separate tented safari rooms and even WiFi. There’s also a camp cook, and the fishing is exceptional for barramundi, giant trevally, tuna, trout, big mud crabs and more. There’s a boat for hire at camp, if fishing is of interest.

Sambar deer can also be hunted here, but they are not easy and rifle hunters would want to plan on 10 days if adding this to the buffalo and banteng hunt. Sambar are much like hunting for Roosevelt Elk.

Overview In Australia’s Northern Territory, hunting for water buffalo and banteng is by spot and stalk in very flat terrain. The land is easy to negotiate, with mosquitos in swamps and heat being your biggest challenges to overcome. In the eastern part of the country, where deer hunting takes place, hills are easy to moderate to negotiate. Estate hunts can be arranged, as can free-range hunts in more demanding terrain.

Hunting Australia Hunting the paperbark forests and surrounding swamps in the Northern Territory is one of the most unique adventures in the world. Seeing multiple buffalo a day is the norm, with success on big bulls being 100% over the years.

Buffalo often end up being taken in short, grassy plains. Banteng are normally found in flatland forests with thick scrub. The better shape you’re in, the more ground you can cover, the greater the chance of getting a prized bull. Make sure your feet are in good condition, for even though the terrain is easy, you can log miles a day.

It’s common for hunters to combine hunts in Queensland for deer with hunts in the Northern Territory for water buffalo and banteng. Spending a few days hunting deer, first, then heading north for a week of buffalo and/or banteng hunting is a good way to see the country and experience what hunting in Australia is all about.

Travel Planning If hunting deer, fly directly into Brisbane, Australia (Toowoomba West Wellcamp Aiport), where you’ll be met by the outfitter. If just desiring to hunt water buffalo or banteng, you will fly directly into Darwin, where the outfitter will meet you. If your hunt starts in Queensland for deer, then continues to Darwin for water buffalo and banteng, you and the outfitter will travel, together. Flights home will depend where your last hunt took place, either out of Darwin or Brisbane. Flights from the U.S. usually go direct into Sydney, then on to Toowoomba or Darwin.

Available Species

Flights from the USA will arrive into Sydney or Brisbane. Flights from Europe will normally arrive in Singapore or Sydney and from there you will fly to Darwin which is the arrival point for our hunts. Depending on your arrival time in Darwin, you might need a hotel room for the night, which we can help arrange for you. After we pick you up in Darwin, we will travel down to the hunting area that offers two different types of accommodation. Clients can either choose to stay in a very comfortable lodge with private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning and all the comforts of home. Hot showers, flush toilets, laundry facilities and a great cuisine make this lodge a very welcome sight at the end of a long hunting day. Alternatively, you can choose to experience a true outback camp far out in the hunting area where you fall asleep at night in comfortable African style safari tent accommodation looking up at the amazing southern sky while listening to the sounds of the bush. All our camps are located right in the hunting areas and have been built specifically to cater for hunters. Charter flights to our areas can be arranged at additional cost.

All species can be hunted with either rifle or bow. The minimum caliber we recommend for hunting water buffalo and scrub bull is .375 H&H.

If you decide to hunt buffalo with a bow you need to be a very experienced bow hunter and must be comfortable pulling at least 60lbs using heavy arrow shafts with two bladed broad heads to get the best possible penetration. For bow hunting, shots range between 15-40 yards; for rifle hunting, shots can range up to 100 yards. Spot and stalk is our main method of hunting. After breakfast, the guide and hunter will venture out into the hunting area in an open-top 4-wheel drive safari truck looking for game, trying to cover as much ground as possible in these vast wilderness areas. Usually we check water holes or creek and river beds for any sign of game. Once a potential trophy animal is spotted, the stalk continues on foot. The hunter can expect to see more than 100 buffalo a day as well as a good number of scrub bulls and wild pigs.

Our hunting season runs from the beginning of June to the end of August in our dry season. Temperatures will be in the 90s during the day and most likely the sun will be out; very seldom we expect to see rain at this time of the year. These are our winter months and normally the conditions are very dry making the hunting area easy to access. Sometimes we start hunting in May already, but clients booking for this period might run the risk of encountering wet conditions that make parts of the area inaccessible. Cull or management hunts can be arranged later on in the year as well.

JR Hunting will assist you with all the necessary rifle import and visa paperwork prior to your hunt in Australia. If you do not wish to bring your own firearm, rental rifles are available and we have several different calibers you can use. However, one still needs to apply for an Australian Firearms License in order to be able to hunt in the Northern Territory.
