Justin Bieber Sparks Justice World Tour Cancellation Rumors After Quietly Removing Tickets

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

If you caught Justin Bieber on his Justice world tour last year before all remaining dates were indefinitely postponed in September, consider yourself lucky. After months of fans — and their money — being left in limbo while awaiting the new tour schedule, the singer has seemingly scrapped the entire tour.

Earlier this week, the postponed shows were quietly removed from Bieber’s website as an influx of ticket holders reported receiving emails regarding refunds from Ticketmaster, Live Nation, and AXS. Fans whose shows were previously marked in the Ticketmaster app with a yellow postponed notice now saw a red cancellation banner across their ticket.

“We regret to inform you that the Justin Bieber shows planned to take place at The O2 arena have been cancelled,” an email from AXS to London concert-goers read. “We understand you will be disappointed and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

“Earlier this year, I went public about my battle with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, where my face was partly paralyzed,” Bieber wrote in a statement at the time. “As the result of this illness, I was not able to complete the North America leg of the Justice Tour.” Still, he traveled to Europe and performed six shows as well as a set at Rock in Rio before deciding that the strain was too much on his body.

“After getting off stage, the exhaustion overtook me and I realized that I need to make my health the priority right now,” he explained. “So I’m going to take a break from touring for the time being. I’m going to be ok, but I need time to rest and get better.”

Justin Bieber Postpones Remaining ‘Justice’ Tour Dates

Justin Bieber Grammys

Justin Bieber will be cutting his rescheduled world tour short due to his ongoing health issues, according to a post in TMZ that was confirmed to Variety by his reps. On Tuesday morning, the singer said that he needed to take a break from performing “to make my health the priority right now.”

In a statement, Bieber wrote: “Earlier this year, I went public about my battle with Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome, where my face was partly paralyzed.

“As the result of this illness, I was not able to complete the North America leg of the Justice Tour. After resting end consulting with doctors, family and team, I went to Europe in an effort to continue with the tour.

“I’m going to be OK, but I need time to rest and get better period I’ve been so proud to bring this show and our message of justice to the world.Thank you for your prayers and support throughout all of this exclamation point i love you all passionately!”

The announcement comes as a surprise, as Bieber was posting photos from his appearance at the Rock in Rio festival on Instagram the night before.

At the time of this article’s publication, the postponement announcement was only posted on TMZ and not on Bieber’s website or social media accounts. The tour has an additional 70 concerts scheduled through March of 2023; the affected dates are in South America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

After pandemic-related delays, Bieber’s “Justice World Tour” launched in March, but he postponed his North American tour early in June after announcing his bout with battling Ramsay Hunt syndrome. In Bieber’s case, the rare virus caused facial paralysis.

After sharing his diagnosis on Instagram on June 10, Bieber postponed his early June dates in Washington, D.C., Toronto and New York City, and then followed with the remainder of the North American leg of the tour.

Variety will have more on the situation as it develops.

Grammy award winning artist justin bieber announces the cancellation of the remainder of the justice world tour. ticket holders report being offered refunds from their point of purchase as of sunday., by valeria garcia • published november 16, 2022 • updated on november 17, 2022 at 6:52 am.

Pop superstar Justin Bieber announced his Changes World Tour back in 2019 after a four-year hiatus, with no knowledge of the chaos that was to come.

After long on and off health battles, Bieber was finally ready to start touring again. He prepared to take on 45 North American shows and was on the cusp of announcing international dates.

When the pandemic was announced in early 2020, Team Bieber had no choice but to postpone the tour.

In an attempt to revive the tour, Bieber pushed the shows a year back. Unfortunately, COVID had different plans and shut that down. Team Bieber bounced back in 2022, successfully rebranding to the "Justice World Tour," corresponding with his 2021 hit album "Justice."

Justin Bieber officially cancels remainder of Justice World Tour after previous delays

is the justice tour cancelled 2022

It looks like the curtain has been drawn on pop star Justin Bieber’s world tour .

The remaining dates on the Justice World Tour, which was formally canceled in September, have been removed from Bieber's official website as of Tuesday. Additionally, several of the singer's upcoming shows listed on Ticketmaster – including 2024 concerts in California, Connecticut and Washington D.C. – have been canceled.

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Bieber and Ticketmaster for further details.

In September, Bieber announced in an Instagram Story that he was canceling the remainder of his world tour, which kicked off February 2022, to "take time to rest and get better." The tour had 70 shows scheduled to run through 2023.

"After resting and consulting with my doctors, family and team, I went to Europe in an effort to continue with the tour. I performed six live shows, but it took a real toll on me," Bieber wrote at the time. "So I'm going to take a break from touring for the time being. I’m going to be OK."

'Getting better every day': Justin Bieber's wife Hailey gives update after Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis

Bieber postponed a slate of U.S. dates on his Justice tour in June 2022 after suffering Ramsay Hunt syndrome , which partially paralyzed his face. The "Ghost" singer wasn’t able to reschedule his summer run of U.S. shows, but he played a handful of concerts in Europe in August before heading to Brazil to perform at Rock in Rio in September.

"After getting off the stage (in Brazil), the exhaustion overtook me and I realized that I need to make my health the priority right now," Bieber said in his statement.

Bieber isn’t the first high-profile music star to publicly cite health – and the mental toll of touring and performing – as a reason to nix live commitments.

Fellow Canadian pop singer Shawn Mendes canceled his world tour in July 2022, which would have played North America and Europe through 2023. Similarly, megastar K-pop band BTS postponed their world tour in 2020, citing burnout as a factor.

Justin Bieber reveals Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis: 'There's full paralysis on this side of my face'

  • Jun 10, 2022

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by the chickenpox virus, which continues to lay dormant in a person after initial infection and can reactivate as a shingles rash, according to the Mayo Clinic . The syndrome is caused when a shingles rash, which can be painful, breaks out near one's ear. It can trigger facial paralysis and hearing loss.

Bieber restarted his tour the following month, performing at Italy's Lucca Summer festival.

In his statement on Tuesday, he said he had put everything he had into continuing the tour.

"After resting and consulting with my doctors, family and team, I went to Europe in an effort to continue with the tour. I performed six live shows, but it took a real toll on me," he wrote. "This past weekend, I performed at Rock in Rio and I gave everything I have to the people in Brazil. After getting off stage, the exhaustion overtook me."

Bieber said he knew in that moment that he had to "make my health the priority."

"I'm going to take a break from touring for the time being," he wrote, adding that he would "be okay, but I need time to rest and get better."

The announcement posted to social media indicates that “the Justice World Tour ended with Rock in Rio,” which, in early September, was the last time he performed. All remaining dates are postponed “up to and including March 25,” reads the statement. You can read it below.

The tour has been postponed five times due to Covid and Bieber’s revelation in June of 2022 that is battling Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which has caused him some facial paralysis.

PREVIOUSLY on September 6 : “I need to make my health the priority right now,” Justin Bieber wrote today in a message posted to his Instagram Story. As a result, the superstar singer said, “I’m going to take a break from touring for the time being.”

Bieber had resumed his Justice World Tour in late July after it was postponed multiple times. He announced in 2021 that he suffers from Ramsay Hunt syndrome and the facial paralysis it causes.

This is the fifth time Bieber has had to pause or postpone the 130-date tour. It was bumped from 2020 to 2021 and then to 2022 because of Covid. Earlier this year, it had to be postponed yet again when he got Covid and then again in June of 2022 due to his battle with Ramsay Hunt syndrome. And now, again.

At one point in June, Bieber posted a video highlighting and explaining his condition which, for a singer, is likely especially difficult to deal with.

Additionally, the Ticketmaster website listed a majority of shows, including those at the Tauron Arena in Krakow, Poland, and the AO Arena in Manchester, Great Britain, as canceled. Several of Bieber’s 2024 shows are also listed as canceled.

Justin Bieber to resume world tour after partial facial paralysis

Last month, singer Justin Bieber postponed his Justice world tour after becoming infected with a virus that caused his face to be partially paralyzed.

July 19, 2022

The “Justice” tour cancellation comes months after Bieber, 28, announced that he would take a break from touring in September . The singer said in a post to his Instagram story that calling off future shows would allow him to focus on himself.

“After getting off stage, the exhaustion overtook me and I realized that I need to make my health the priority right now,” the “Peaches” singer said in a statement a day after performing at the Rock in Rio in Rio de Janeiro.

He continued: “So I’m going to take a break from touring for the time being. I’m going to be ok, but I need time to rest and get better.”

Bieber first postponed his tour in June 2022 after sharing with fans that he was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a virus that has caused partial facial paralysis.

“As you can see, this eye is not blinking. I can’t smile in this side of my face. This nostril will not move,” Bieber said in an Instagram video. “So there’s full paralysis on this side of my face.”

The Mayo Clinic said Ramsay Hunt occurs in people who have had chickenpox and is a shingles outbreak that affects a nerve near one ear and causes one-sided paralysis and hearing loss. It’s most common in people older than 60.

Justin Bieber has paused his Justice World Tour due to sickness, hours before his first scheduled night in Toronto.

The next few shows will be rescheduled, he wrote on Instagram Story , and the new dates are yet to be announced.

“Can’t believe I’m saying this. I’ve done everything to get better but my sickness is getting worse,” the “Peaches” singer wrote. He said he will have to postpone the next few shows, per doctor’s orders, but did not share any more specifics.

After a scheduled two-night run at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, Bieber was slated to travel to Washington, D.C., next, followed by two nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Whether these shows will be affected is unknown.

“To all my people I love you so much and I’m gonna rest and get better,” Bieber wrote on the story, which was reposted by his manager Scooter Braun.

The Justice World Tour was originally slated to take place in summer 2020 as the Changes Tour but was postponed to 2021, then again to 2022 due to COVID-19. Two of his previous shows in Las Vegas were also postponed after his positive COVID-19 test results. Fans who hold tickets for the Toronto shows have taken to Twitter to express their frustration over the show being rescheduled three times, amid tweets of concerns and confusion.

The tour is promoting both Changes and Justice , two Billboard 200 chart-topping album that have collectively produced six top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits, including the No. 1 smash “Peaches” with Daniel Caesar and Giveon.

Justin Bieber Quietly Cancels Remainder Of World Tour After Postponing Shows For Health Reasons

Daniel Welsh

Justin Bieber performing in Budapest last year

Justin Bieber has cancelled the remaining dates on his Justice world tour, which were postponed last year for health reasons.

Back in September, Justin announced he was postponing the remainder of his Justice world tour on medical grounds, after previously delaying a string of shows due to a Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis .

“After getting offstage the exhaustion overtook me and I realised I need to make my health the priority right now,” Justin told his fans at the time.

“So I’m going to take a break from touring right now. I’m going to be OK but I need to take time to rest and get better. Thank you for all your prayers and support throughout all this. I love you all passionately.”

The NHS website describes Ramsay Hunt syndrome as a facial nerve disorder “caused by a virus in the facial nerve and is a more severe cause of facial paralysis”.

It’s now been revealed that the rest of the Justice tour has been axed.

Although Justin – who is celebrating his 29th birthday on Wednesday – is yet to address the cancellation, promoters in Australia and Asia have confirmed shows there will no longer be going ahead.

Fans in the UK have also been sharing screenshots of emails telling them that the shows had been cancelled, with many voicing their disappointment at the way they found out the news...

A spokesperson for Justin Bieber had no comment when contacted by HuffPost UK, but they did confirm that the tour had been cancelled.

Justin’s Justice World tour was originally supposed to kick off in May 2020, but was postponed twice due to the pandemic.

After finally opening in February 2022, the second show of the tour had to be cancelled when the star contracted Covid-19 himself.

The "Yummy" singer added that he consulted with his doctors, team and family in his decision to resume the European leg of his tour in July. However, after six shows, Justin said performing "took a real toll on me."

"This past weekend, I performed at Rock in Rio and I gave everything I have to the people in Brazil," he continued. "After getting off stage, the exhaustion overtook me and I realized that I need to make my health the priority right now. So I'm going to take a break from touring for the time being. I'm going to be ok, but I need time to rest and get better."

Justin added, "I've been so proud to bring this show and our message of Justice to the world. Thank you for your prayers and support throughout all of this! I love you all passionately!"

The "Love Yourself" singer initially postponed several North American dates of his tour in June after experiencing partial face paralysis from Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which occurs when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near one of your ears, according to Mayo Clinic .

Justin Bieber's 'Justice' world tour canceled, including show at Mohegan Sun in June 2024

Justin Bieber's "Justice" world tour has come to an abrupt end.

After several postponements, the singer and his team have seemingly called off the remaining shows of the tour's European leg and more, including the June 2024 shows scheduled for the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California. The Utilita Arena Sheffield in the U.K., one of the upcoming stops on Bieber's tour, announced on Tuesday that "the show has been cancelled."

Fans on Twitter shared screenshots from ticket sales platforms AXS and Ticketmaster announcing that their upcoming events have been canceled as well.

"We regret to inform you that the Justin Bieber shows planned to take place at The O2 arena have been cancelled," according to a screenshot of an email from the London venue that was shared in a tweet . "We understand you will be disappointed and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause," the email continued.

Additionally, the Ticketmaster website listed a majority of shows, including those at the Tauron Arena in Krakow, Poland, and the AO Arena in Manchester, England, as canceled. Several of Bieber's 2024 shows are also listed as canceled, including a show scheduled for Mohegan Sun in Uncasville.

Representatives for Bieber did not immediately respond to the L.A. Times' request for confirmation on Tuesday.

The "Justice" tour cancellation comes months after Bieber, 28, announced that he would take a break from touring in September. The singer said in a post to his Instagram story that calling off future shows would allow him to focus on himself.

"After getting off stage, the exhaustion overtook me and I realized that I need to make my health the priority right now," the "Peaches" singer said in a statement a day after performing at the Rock in Rio in Rio de Janeiro.

He continued: "So I'm going to take a break from touring for the time being. I'm going to be ok, but I need time to rest and get better."

Bieber first postponed his tour in June 2022 after sharing with fans that he was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a virus that has caused partial facial paralysis.

"As you can see, this eye is not blinking. I can't smile in this side of my face. This nostril will not move," Bieber said in an Instagram video. "So there's full paralysis on this side of my face."

The Mayo Clinic said Ramsay Hunt occurs in people who have had chickenpox and is a shingles outbreak that affects a nerve near one ear and causes one-sided paralysis and hearing loss. It's most common in people older than 60.

"So for those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I'm just physically, obviously not capable of doing them," Bieber said in his June video. "This is pretty serious, as you can see. I wish this wasn't the case, but obviously my body is telling me I gotta slow down."

Justin Bieber cancels massive world tour following rare medical diagnosis

Bieber initially revealed his ramsay hunt syndrome diagnosis — which caused partial facial paralysis — to fans in an instagram post in june.

By Lottie Elizabeth Johnson

A few months after being diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, Justin Bieber has officially canceled his world tour to focus on his health.

Why did Justin Bieber cancel ‘Justice’ world tour?

“Earlier this year, I went public about my battle with Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome, where my face was partly paralyzed,” the 28-year-old pop star wrote in a statement , noting how he was unable to finish the North American leg of his tour as a result of the diagnosis. “After resting and consulting with my doctors, family and team, I went to Europe in an effort to continue with the tour. I performed six live shows, but it took a real toll on me.”

Bieber then shared how “exhaustion overtook” him after performing in Brazil this past weekend, leading to the realization that he needed to make his “health the priority right now.”

“So I’m going to take a break from touring for the time being,” he continued. “I’m going to be OK, but I need time to rest and get better. ... Thank you for your prayers and support through all of this! I love you all passionately!”

After COVID-19-related delays, Bieber finally kicked off his “Justice” World Tour in March — which included a stop at Salt Lake City’s Vivint Arena . He had to postpone some North American dates in June following his Ramsay Hunt diagnosis — dates that had not yet been rescheduled, People reported. Bieber returned to touring in July before officially canceling the tour, which would’ve taken him across multiple continents through March 2023.

What is Ramsay Hunt syndrome?

Bieber initially revealed his Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis to fans in an Instagram post on June 10.

“As you can see, this eye is not blinking. I can’t smile on this side of my face. This nostril will not move. So there’s full paralysis on the side of my face,” Bieber said in an Instagram video that has more than 60 million views, per Variety .

According to Mayoclinic.org , Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a rare disorder caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, and happens “when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near one of your ears.” In addition to a painful shingles rash, it can also lead to facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear.

The disease is treatable, with most patients recovering within three to four months — although more severe cases can lead to permanent facial paralysis and damaged nerves, NBC News reported.

“Getting vaccinated for chickenpox and shingles are the best ways to prevent Ramsay Hunt syndrome and its complications,” according to NBC News .

Symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome

According to Mayoclinic.org , the two main symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome are:

  • “A painful red rash with fluid-filled blisters on, in and around one ear.”
  • “Facial weakness or paralysis on the same side as the affected ear.”

Other symptoms can include: ear pain, hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, a change or loss in taste, and dry mouth and eyes.

Justin Bieber follows Shawn Mendes in world tour cancellation

Bieber’s canceled tour comes less than two months after pop star Shawn Mendes canceled his massive world tour due to the pressures of life on the road, the Deseret News reported.

“I wasn’t totally prepared for the toll that being back on the road would take on me,” the 24-year-old singer said in a statement, per the Deseret News . “I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away.”

MANILA, Philippines – Sad news for Filipino Beliebers! Justin Bieber’s much-anticipated Justice World Tour show in Manila has been postponed following the singer’s health concerns.

According to concert promoter Ovation Productions, the Justice World Tour officially ended with “Rock in Rio” in Brazil, and “all dates up to and including March 25, 2023” are “postponed to next year.”

The international pop star was slated to have a stop in the Philippines on October 29 a t the CCP Open Grounds. The statement told fans that they should “await further news on dates, venues, and cities as updates become available.”

Ovation Productions assured ticket holders for the Manila stop that their existing tickets will be honored in the rescheduled date. “Your tickets are still valid for the new date and no further action is required,” they said, but for those who will not be available on a new date, full refunds will be available and more information will be announced by the promoter.

The Justice World Tour was originally slated for 2020, but got postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It finally kicked off in February 2022. However, it was again postponed in June when Justin announced that he was battling Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome which caused him facial paralysis. It resumed in July before the singer had to take another break in September to focus on his health.

Justin last performed in the Philippines in 2011. He was supposed to return in 2017 for his Purpose Tour, but the Manila stop also got canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances.” – Rappler.com

Live nation could face antitrust suit but analysts doubt action's bite.

WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 24: Amy Edwards demonstrates against the live entertainment ticket industry ... [+] outside the U.S. Capitol January 24, 2023 in Washington, DC. The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing this morning to explore whether the merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster has stifled competition and harmed the consumer marketplace. (Photo by Drew Angerer/Getty Images)

The U.S. Department of Justice plans to file an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation, according to the Wall Street Journal .

In an April 16 interview with a major TV network I was asked whether that purported antitrust lawsuit would lead to lower ticket prices. My answer: The legal action could lower prices if the right remedy is put in place.

The 2010 merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation continues to shock me. How could combining the largest ticketing service provider with the dominant operator of concert venues pass antitrust muster in the first place?

The result of that merger has been predictable: inflation-trouncing rates of ticket price increases coupled with an even higher percentage of so-called junk fees on top of the ticket price than what prevailed in 2009 when the two companies were independent.

What could cure this problem? It would certainly help if Ticketmaster and Live Nation were split up. That would only work if consumers enjoyed real competition among ticketing suppliers for concerts hosted at Live Nation venues.

JPMorgan Joins Goldman Sachs In Serious Bitcoin Halving Price Warning

Google makes a major new sale offer to pixel 8 buyers, drugs like ozempic and mounjaro could treat other conditions here s what scientists are looking at.

If that does not work, a simple — but radical — solution would be to sell concert tickets directly between artists and consumers on a nontransferable basis.

Simply put, artists would set the price and once consumers paid for the tickets, they could either attend the concert or let the ticket expire and be worthless. This method of selling tickets would eliminate all the intermediaries that contribute to soaring ticket prices.

What would this mean for Live Nation stock? The 9% drop in the company’s stock price on April 16 suggests a possible breakup of the company could be bad news for investors.

Sadly for the average concertgoer, Wall Street analysts do not expect any significant restructuring of Live Nation. That means, no relief for Swifties and more upside for Live Nation investors.

Reported Justice Department Antitrust Suit Against Live Nation

The Department of Justice could file an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation. The suit could emerge “as soon as next month” and “spur major changes at the biggest name in concert promotion and ticketing,” the Journal reported.

The suit could allege “the nation’s biggest concert promoter has leveraged its dominance in a way that undermined competition for ticketing live events,” wrote the Journal citing anonymous sources.

Ticketmaster — with “more than 80% of the market for primary ticket sales in the biggest venues in the U.S.” noted the Journal — has exclusive ticketing contracts with many of the venues where the most popular acts perform.

Ticketmaster denies the company has monopoly power. “Ticketmaster has more competition today than it has ever had, and the deal terms with venues show it has nothing close to monopoly power,” a Ticketmaster spokesperson told the Journal .

“Ticketmaster doesn’t set prices, he said, artists and teams do, and they are subject to high demand and low supply, while the majority of fees go to venues,” wrote Live Nation’s head of corporate affairs Dan Wall in a blog post .

Why Ticketmaster And Live Nation Merged

In 2010, Live Nation (then the leading concert venue operator) and Ticketmaster (the No. 1 ticketing system operator) merged.

I was shocked that the deal passed muster with the antitrust authorities. As I co-wrote in a business school case, Chokehold on Live Entertainment , perhaps the merger was approved to enable Ticketmaster to keep Live Nation — which was then heavily indebted and highly unprofitable — alive during a brutal recession caused by the financial crisis.

Meanwhile the merger kept Ticketmaster from losing a contract with Live Nation that accounted for a third of its revenue.

How Much Ticket Prices Have Risen Since 2010

Concert ticket prices have soared since the merger. To wit, average ticket prices have “more than tripled since the mid-‘90s, even before they hit the resale market,” according to an August 2022 Time article.

To be fair, Ticketmaster was already charging outrageous fees before the merger. For example, our case discussed prices for a 2009 Green Day concert in Denver in which Ticketmaster required the concertgoer to pay a “service fee” of 45% of the ticket’s $45.50 face value — or $20.50 (which included $2.50 for printing the ticket at home) — bringing the total price to $66.

The fees tacked on to tickets can be much higher than the 45% for that 2009 Green Day concert — now as high as 78% of the ticket price, noted Time . To put those price increases into perspective, between 1995 and 2022, the consumer price index roughly doubled, as I wrote in a December 2022 Forbes post.

Finally, there is a reason that StubHub can get away with selling a ticket near the stage for Taylor Swift. Ticketmaster — which controls 70% of the ticketing market — holds back as many as 90% of the tickets for the secondary market, Time wrote.

Resellers use bots to resell them at a markup. “They usually [go] to professional brokers charging outlandish markups, which a 2018 government report said can range from an average of nearly 50% to an astonishing 7,000%,” Variety wrote.

How Regulators Have Failed To Offset Live Nation’s Market Power

The Justice Department took minor steps to reduce the merged companies’ monopoly power. Specifically, the DOJ required the company to sell some parts of its business and agreed on a settlement that “forbade Live Nation from threatening concert venues with losing access to its tours if those venues decide to use ticketing providers other than Ticketmaster,” reported the New York Times .

Despite this settlement, in late 2019, the Justice Department said Live Nation had “repeatedly violated this provision of its decree,” noted the Times . In November 2022, the DOJ was investigating Live Nation to determine whether it had abused its power in the live music industry, the Times reported.

Such economic power seems to have been in play with the 2022 sale of Taylor Swift concert tickets. On StubHub, a ticket resale site, seats near Swift’s stage at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey were listed for as much as $76,000 on November 17, 2022, reported the Wall Street Journal .

While the DOJ has yet to sue Live Nation for antitrust violations, I would not be shocked if the suit reflected the logic of a California antitrust suit filed by 26 Swifties.

The California suit — filed after Ticketmaster canceled the public sale of tickets in October 2022 for Swift’s 52 show Eras Tour — accused Ticketmaster’s parent of “anticompetitive conduct and fraud,” according to the Times .

The lawsuit alleged Ticketmaster had engaged in “a long perpetuated scheme” that forced fans to exclusively use it for presale and sale prices, which were higher than what a competitive market price would be, reported the Times .

Moreover, the suit charged Ticketmaster had done the same for its “Secondary Ticket Exchange, to obtain fees and profits above what it could earn in a competitive market,” the Times wrote.

The lawsuit alleged antitrust violations such as the following:

  • Ticketmaster had agreements with the large stadiums in the tour and Swift’s large fan base meant she “has no choice” but to work with Ticketmaster.
  • Ticketmaster “carved out small territories” for competitors such as SeatGeek who charged the same price as Ticketmaster to “hide [its] monopolistic power and control.”
  • Ticketmaster engaged in tying — the selling of one of a company’s products conditioned on that customer buying another — which violates the California Business and Professional code. The suit specifically alleged Ticketmaster tied the purchase of Swift merchandise to an increased chance of getting a verification code — which would prove the entity seeking to buy presale tickets was not a bot, according to the lawsuit.

What An Antitrust Suit Could Mean For Live Nation Investors And Consumers

As a consumer, I would prefer to see enough competition in the market for concert tickets to reduce prices significantly.

Wall Street analysts do not anticipate such remedies — for example, a breakup of Live Nation and Ticketmaster — as likely to occur. They see a higher probability of a settlement between Live Nation and the DOJ involving “behavioral changes” rather than structural remedies, according to an April 15 research note by JPMorgan analysts featured in a Dow Jones report.

The analysts expect the adjustments to be both “pro-competitive” and not “materially negative to the company's long-run outlook, such as shorter terms of exclusive ticketing contracts, or allowing outside promoters to book shows at Live Nation amps or theaters,” JPMorgan analysts continued.

Wall Street is bullish about Live Nation stock. The 14 analysts who offer 12-month price targets for Live Nation envision roughly 29% upside given an average of $120.77 per share, according to TipRanks .

As long as demand for prime concert tickets remains high, Live Nation will be the only game in town. And that will mean the company can keep charging ever-higher prices — further enriching investors in the company’s stock.

Taylor Swift Eras Tour: Justice Department Targets Live Nation Entertainment Over Ridiculously Pricey Tickets

Since the inception of the Eras Tour and its initial international leg, Taylor Swift enthusiasts have flooded arenas with resounding chants of support. Her electrifying performances have stirred up a fervor, creating a seismic wave of excitement among fans, who eagerly anticipated a return to the concert event of the year. However, despite the economic boon brought about by the Eras Tour, concerns have emerged regarding ticket pricing and the quality of services provided by Live Nation, the agency in question.

Even though investigations into the agency's practices have been ongoing, the issue has now gained significant traction, with the Justice Department poised to file a lawsuit against Live Nation.

The reason behind the Live Nation being aimed for a lawsuit after Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour

In November 2022, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour triggered an investigation by the Justice Department during a presale event. A Ticketmaster glitch resulted in numerous fans being unable to secure tickets, prompting the government to re-evaluate the Live Nation and Ticketmaster merger from a decade ago. As reported by The Wall Street Journal , now, the Justice Department is once again turning its attention to the issue, preparing to file an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation and Ticketmaster, possibly within the coming month.

The lawsuit alleges that Ticketmaster has hindered competition in the live event ticketing market . However, specific claims regarding the suit have not been learned yet. Concerns were raised in 2010 when the companies merged, with fears that Live Nation could use its influence to pressure venues into using its ticketing services exclusively. As a dominant force that holds 80% of the market in concert promotion and ticketing, the merger raised concerns about ridiculous ticket fees, inadequate customer support, and anti-competitive practices.

Additionally, with the merger, it also solidified its presence in the post-pandemic era of live events. Despite the company's denial of any monopolistic behavior, the impending lawsuit suggests otherwise. However, amidst these legal transactions, Swift’s Eras Tour boasted an economic boost for America in a never-seen-before way.

When Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour backed up America’s economy

Taylor Swift is expected to amass a fortune exceeding $4 billion by the conclusion of her Eras Tour in December per DailyMail . Early forecasts indicated that her performances in the USA alone have already generated and are projected to generate over $4.5 billion in consumer spending. Additionally, before embarking on the Australian leg of her tour, it was estimated that Australians would collectively spend upwards of $326 million on tickets, hotel accommodations, and merchandise, mimicking the economic boost like in the US.

The ticket prices that boosted the economy are determined by artists and their teams and not by Ticketmaster itself as contended earlier by Live Nation's Head of Corporate affairs, Dan Wall. Nevertheless, in 2019, reports surfaced of Live Nation pressuring venues to utilize its Ticketmaster subsidiary, prompting a revised settlement. Now, the investigation, initiated by the government, seems aimed at enhancing concert experiences, suggesting a chance for sustained economic prosperity, with Swifties possibly enjoying easier ticket purchases.

What do you think of the Justice Department aiming a lawsuit against Live Nation for the pricey tickets of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour? Let us know in the comments below!

Minnesota Law’s Mock Trial Team Reaches Quarterfinals in the 2024 National Trial Competition

After sweeping the Upper Midwest regional tournament in February and becoming one of only a handful of schools nationwide to qualify two teams for the national tournament, Minnesota Law's two mock trial teams achieved a school record-setting performance at the 2024 National Trial Competition earlier this month in Houston, TX. Team Maroon, comprised of Diana Kawka '24 , Dominik Ruch '24 , and Thaameran Sarveswaran '25 , reached the quarterfinals for the first time in Minnesota Law history, finishing as one of the top 8 teams in the country (out of more than 300 teams nationwide). Team Gold, comprised of Nathan Barry '25 , An Duong '24 , and Simon Earle '24 , also surpassed Minnesota Law’s previous record with an outstanding performance against many highly competitive teams.

The National Trial Competition—hosted by the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) and co-sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL)—is one of the oldest and largest law school mock trial tournaments in the country, and is judged by ACTL Fellows, a select group of the nation's most successful trial attorneys.

Congratulations to both teams!

The teams were coached by Craig Roen '87 and adjunct professors and former competitors Joseph Janochoski '18 , and Tommy Harshaw '22 . Both teams received critical support throughout the year from the mock trial program’s scrimmage team, consisting of Will Myers '24 , Brandon Redmon '24 , and Marie Lundgren '25 .
