Virtual Visits
Riley at IU Health offers virtual visits for certain appointment types and providers. These visits allow our expert physicians to see and treat your child from the comfort of your own home. To schedule a virtual visit or see if it’s an option for your child’s appointment, call their provider directly .
What to Expect from a Scheduled Virtual Visit
If you or your child have not experienced a virtual visit before, you might not know what to expect. Your child’s provider will provide you with instructions on how to connect and if there is anything you need to do in advance of the visit. Be sure to also ask if there are any tests, such as bloodwork, that need to be completed before the scheduled appointment.
To find an IU Health outpatient lab near you, visit: iuhealth.org/findlabs
To find an IU Health radiology office near you, visit: iuhealth.org/findradiology
For all virtual visits, our teams ask that you plan to join the service your child’s provider is using at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time, just as you would for an in-person appointment.
IU Health Virtual Visits
As part of Indiana University Health, Riley at IU Health has access to the IU Health Virtual Visits -app. If your child’s provider is using this service, here are the steps you’ll take so your child’s appointment runs smoothly. Our team recommends doing the first three steps the day before the appointment, if possible, to allow time for any unexpected issues.
- Make sure your device meets the requirements for the visit
- Download the free IU Health Virtual Visits app ( Google Play for Android devices or App Store for Apple devices) or enroll on your computer
- Enroll by creating a free login and completing your profile
- Open the Virtual Visits app or go to iuhealthvideovisit.org on your desktop computer to log in
- Once logged in, you’ll select the calendar icon at the bottom of the screen. The appointment with your child’s provider will be at the top of the screen. Select the appointment to begin the visit & select get started.
- Verify your information is correct and select continue
- Fill out the information for your child’s appointment such as the reason for the visit, an image if it’s necessary to the appointment, the pharmacy for any necessary medications, and acknowledge the privacy practices and informed consent.
- You’ll be placed in a virtual waiting room where your child’s doctor will connect with you
You can also view or print these instructions .
If your child's provider is using a different virtual visits platform, you will receive instructions directly from your provider on how best to access to the visit.
Other Services
Some providers may use other services, such as a phone call for your child’s appointment. It’s important when scheduling your child’s virtual visit that you confirm with the office what service their provider will use. This will allow you to prepare for the appointment and make sure your device can support the service without needing updates at the time of the appointment.
Making the Most of a Virtual Visit
Virtual visits may be available for both new and established patients. Call the provider you’d like to schedule with directly to see if a virtual visit is right for your child’s appointment.
To make the most out of your virtual visit plan as you would for an in-person appointment. However, there are a few things to make sure you have before your child’s scheduled appointment:
- Ensure your device is fully charged or connected to a power supply to avoid any interruptions during the visit
- Find a quiet, well-lit space
- Be prepared to give your child’s current height and weight if you’re able to do so
If you have questions you’d like to ask during the appointment, such as medications, additional concerns, it might be helpful to write them down before the visit to reference during the appointment.
On-Demand Virtual Visits
IU Health also offers On-Demand Virtual Visits for anyone in Indiana 2 years of age or older 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. You can get the care your child needs for common conditions like:
- Diarrhea, heartburn, nausea and vomiting
- Cuts, scrapes, sprains, bruises, burns and insect bites
- Hives, pink eye and rash
- Infections, including bladder, yeast or urinary tract infection
To learn more, visit iuhealth.org/virtualvisits .

- To schedule or see if a virtual visit will work for your child’s appointment, call their provider directly. You can find their number using our online provider directory.
- When scheduling a virtual visit, make sure to ask what service they will be using so you can prepare your device before the appointment.
- Make sure your device is fully charged or connected to a power supply.
- On the day of your child’s appointment, be sure that you plan to join the appointment at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled time.

Frequently asked questions
You might have questions about what to expect during a virtual visit.
What is a virtual visit?
A virtual visit (also known as telehealth, telemedicine, e-visit) is a live video or phone appointment with your health care provider using your computer, smartphone, or tablet.
What medical conditions can be seen through a virtual visit?
You can use a virtual visit for many common conditions, such as:
- Cold, cough, congestion, fever, sore throat, flu and other sinus symptoms
- Diarrhea, heartburn, nausea and vomiting
- Scrapes, sprains, bruises, burns and insect bites
- Hives and rashes
- Asymptomatic STI screening
- Medication management (birth control, PrEP, chronic conditions, anxiety, depression)
- Nutrition consultation
- Tobacco cessation
- Depression and anxiety (CAPS)
If we don’t feel we can adequately assess your problem via a virtual visit, then we will recommend you seek in person care at a local health care facility. We will not do genital or other sensitive exams via telemedicine.
Is it private?
Yes! We use a secure and confidential, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing platform.
How do I log-in for my appointment?
The Student Health Center will send a link to your appointment via email or text. We recommend clicking the link to log-in to your appointment 30 minutes prior to the appointment time.
Logging-in early helps to ensure that your technology is working correctly and will give you time to complete a required consent form and additional paperwork that might be needed.
Once you log-in do not hang up! This cancels your visit and you will not be able to log back on.
How should I prepare for my virtual visit?
- If you are using a mobile device or a laptop, set it on a surface so it is stationary and at eye level. This makes it easier for your provider to see you.
- Make sure your mobile device or computer is charged or plugged in. You do not want your device to lose power in the middle of your appointment.
- Use Chrome or Safari Internet browser.
- Dress appropriately. Your provider will be able to see you.
- Find a quiet space that is private and free from distractions during the visit. Turn off any background music, TV, etc.
- Have insurance information and pharmacy contact information available in case you need a prescription.

Change to 24/7 Virtual Visits Cost-Share for UnitedHealthcare small business Health Savings Account plan designs in DE
The cost-share for 24/7 Virtual Visits will be reduced to $0 for UnitedHealthcare small business HSA plans beginning with Jan. 1, 2024, effective dates.
The cost-share for 24/7 Virtual Visits will be reduced to $0 for new fully insured small business (2–50) groups and new UnitedHealthcare Level Funded groups (5–300) beginning with Jan. 1, 2024, effective dates. The cost-share change will be implemented for existing fully insured and level funded groups upon their 2024 renewal date. It is already included for fully insured large groups (51+).
The $0 24/7 Virtual Visit cost-share applies when services are delivered through a designated virtual network provider by video or phone using myuhc.com ® or the UnitedHealthcare ® app.
With 24/7 Virtual Visits, members can connect on demand to a provider by video or phone through myuhc.com or the UnitedHealthcare app, including national care providers such as Optum Virtual Care. Participating providers, all of whom are licensed at the state level and have been vetted for providing quality care, can treat a wide range of health conditions, from flu and pinkeye to migraines and more, and may prescribe medication as needed. 24/7 Virtual Visits may treat many of the same conditions as an ER or urgent care, offering a more convenient and affordable alternative — particularly at night or on weekends when many primary care providers are usually unavailable.
