Great White are a band hailing from Los Angeles, California, United States who formed in 1978. Since their debut in 1984 they have released twelve studio albums of gritty, blues rock inflected hair metal and have sold eight million records the world over.
Great White came together thanks to the musical partnership of singer Jack Russell and guitarist Mark Kendall. Initially, Russell asked Kendall to join the band he was fronting at the time, but their creative chemistry proved so potent that they went off together to form their own band. They wrote and rehearsed together until 1979, when Russell botched a robbery he was committing and accidentally shot a live-in maid in the house he had broken into. Quite rightly, he was caught and sentenced to eight years in prison, and Kendall was left to pick up the pieces on his own. He did actually put together a band called Dante Fox, and played some shows around the Orange County area of California with them. However, Russell was released from his prison sentence after 18 months and rejoined Kendall soon afterwards.
The band played their debut show with Russell at Hollywood’s legendary Troubadour venue and after recording some demo tapes, they secured the services of Alan Niven as their manager. Niven’s first act as manager was to change the band’s name to a nickname that Kendall had picked up around the L.A rock scene. Due to his naturally platinum blonde hair, his white Fender Telecaster and his habit of wearing a white jumpsuit with matching shoes on stage, he’d been given the nickname Great White after the band’s first few gigs. The band unanimously agreed on their new name and by 1982, the band were known as Great White.
By the same year, Niven had formed Aegean, his own independent record label, and with his backing the band hit the studio to record their debut E.P “Out Of The Night”. In the end, not only did he put the record out but he also convinced the L.A Radio Station KMET to playlist a couple of songs from the E.P. They ended up playing the songs so regularly that the bands profile shot up within months, and by the end of the year they were headlining and selling out concert halls all over California. By the end of 1983 the band had signed to EMI America and their self-titled debut album was released early the following year.
The band rode out the rest of the decade as the connoisseur’s hair metal band of choice. They opened for everyone from Judas Priest, and Whitesnake to Dokken and had their 1987 album “Once Bitten…” certified platinum in April the following year. Its follow up “…Twice Shy” was an even bigger deal, achieving double platinum status within five months of its release. Ever since then the band have become one of the most fondly remembered acts of the hair metal era. They were always a little more respectable than the likes of Poison and their ilk, willing to rock out in a way that arguably made them pave the way for Guns N’ Roses. To this day both incarnations of the band that still play can blow the roof of any venue they play, and with a back catalogue like theirs, they come highly recommended.
Live reviews
Great White immediately makes me think of a shark, I’d imagine it does that for a lot of people, and that clever name links the band perfectly to their heavy rock and glam metal genre of music. ‘My, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy, baby’…probably their most famous track released back in 1989 with the release of their most popular album, is still a well listened to song today.
Although after this album, the bands popularity decreased, they continued to release new material, and their performances still attracted large crowds. I saw them towards the very end of their performance career, and I was apprehensive as to the level of performance I may witness, as it had been quite some years since the releases of their hit tracks. I was however pleasantly surprised. The band didn’t try and of the alternative approaches as you might expect, but stuck to their older and most successful music, and performed a great rendition of everyone’s favourite songs.
Despite their vocals maybe not being quite the same standard as they once were, it was a great show with some of the best hits of their time. Mark Kendall was great at getting the audience on their side straight away, and was immediately hyping the crowd, and encouraging us all to join in. If they were to reform for a tour, I’d definitely go along, really worth seeing the classics performed live.
Report as inappropriate
As all American as apple pie, a hard rock institution in their own right, Great White have enjoyed a career that spans four decades. The group's lineup may have changed over the time yet the band has remained loyal to its fanbase and its commitment to perform live. It has been noted that it is up onstage where the musicians truly thrive and there is no chance the group will be disbanding anytime soon as they all seem collectively invested in the mentality of the operation.
The fanbase shows no sign of wavering either as night after night the group packs out venues of fans old and new to see them perform. There is a huge sense of bravado associated with the live show yet it is never arrogant, just five musicians attempting to perform the biggest and best show possible for their audience. With Jack Russell and Mark Kendall once again performing on stage together it is a true celebration of Great White as a whole so expectedly the hits such as 'House of Broken Love' and 'Lady Red Light' get an airing. They save an instrumental heavy version of 'Rock Me' where each member gets a solo before leading brilliantly into 'Once Bitten Twice Shy'.
Great White is the all American hard rock band from LA who has been around for well over thirty years now. They have released many albums and been with a handful of record labels, but the thing that has stayed true to this band is their fans. They have a loyal fan base that always seem to make it out to their every tour and they don’t disappoint.
They open with the high octane and foot stomping “Rock Me” which was a huge hit for this rock outfit in 87, and two decades later this audience are still singing every single word to these songs making a very memorable moment for the band. “House of Broken Love” is the song of the set that invites acoustic guitars to the stage, showing a bit more of a tender side of the band. “Desert Moon” hosts some intense riffage on the guitars which are doused in distortion, the guitar solo bringing the house down, with a huge amount of applause following the performance.
I was so excited to be able to attend the 2015-2016 new years eve concert with Great White, they truly are one of the best hair bands still to this day, and they know how to wow the audience, I took my best of Great White cd in hopes to get it autographed and I was not disappointed, they truly love there fans and show it, I not only got my cd autographed but got a wink and a at ah girl to ,my husband and me love there music ,there concerts never disappoint, there music is timeless, Great White rock on forever, true fans to the end Diana and Peter Toft
As expected, Slaughter Slauterterd IT! GREAT WHITE, well, were GREAT. AWESEME. Also GREAT venue. Choctaw Entertainment venue is far and away better than Windstar too. Traffic flow in and out, before and after was well oechstrated and efficient so coming & going, with all those people, was fast and not crowded either. I loved that had to go through metal detectors to get into concert.
Saw them for the first time since splitting with Jack & have to say that Terry really revitalized the band. Before Terry, they were dead in the water. Ilous brings a fresh, new, energetic vibe that the band had really been lacking in the later Russell years
Way awesome!! Got to get right up to the stage. Saw slaughter with great white and got to meet mark slaughter and get pictures and a signature from him as well. Spent the rest of the evening meeting other band members!
Just saw Great White perform in MN while on tour with Skid Row. Awesome performance....played Rock Me, Save Your Love, Once Bitten Twice Shy...band sounded great! Can't wait to see them again.

JACK RUSSELL'S GREAT WHITE made its live debut this past Saturday, January 14 at the Rock-n-Roll GangStar Apparel Pre-NAMM Festival & Jam at Delzano's in Redondo Beach. The set included GREAT WHITE classics as well as cover versions of PINK FLOYD 's "Wish You Were Here" and RINGO STARR 's "It Don't Come Easy" .
Fan-filmed video footage of the concert can be seen below.
The current touring lineup of GREAT WHITE — Mark Kendall (lead guitar), Scott Snyder (bass), Audie Desbrow (drums), Michael Lardie (guitar, keyboards) and Terry Ilous (lead vocals) — issued a statement last month in which they claimed that Russell 's "frail body" and "drug abuse" have prohibited him from taking part in the band's performances for the past year. They additionally revealed that Jack had undergone "five major surgeries" after his drug abuse got so bad that "his body began to shut down and ultimately resulted in colostomy surgery from a perforated bowel." In the statement, GREAT WHITE also insisted that the singer "does not have the right to start his own GREAT WHITE or use the name without our names in the lineup" and they vowed to "litigate any promoter that books ' Jack Russell 's GREAT WHITE ' or uses any logo featuring the name GREAT WHITE ."
In an interview with Metal Sludge , Russell stated about his estranged bandmates, "I don't care what they say. The proof is in the pudding. Everyone is going to see that Jack is back, that it's all rumors. I mean, do people really give a shit if I'm sober or not? They can come, they'll see I look great, I sound great. I want everyone to come out and see. This January 14 thing is just a jam, and only four-fifths of the band is going to be there because [guitarist] Matt Johnson is going to be in Texas, but starting in February, I'm doing a a tour."
When asked about the rumors of his poor health, Jack said, "I am fine. I just bought a 45-foot boat, and I'm living on it in Redondo Beach, my old stomping ground when GREAT WHITE was its most successful. It's nice to see my favorite sushi restaurant and favorite Italian restaurant are still around. I go fishing three times a week, and I'm in great shape. All these rumors from the other camp about me being not healthy and everyone being afraid I am going to die, it's all B.S. Those guys haven't talked to me in months. They haven't talked to me, so come on, give me a break. Who even cares? I can still sing great. End of story."
Regarding the fact that the GREAT WHITE guys and their manager have a totally different opinion on whether Jack is fit to keep going, the singer said, "They're just trying to make me look bad. They feel scared and threatened, and they should be. They don't own the name. This is my band. Everyone knows this is my band. I started in 1978 and changed the name in 1982. The others, they came in because I was the one who invited them. It was cool for a while before all this crap started. They don't own the name, they don't own the logo. [ GREAT WHITE 's manager] Obi Steinman sues everyone in the world, but I'm lucid, I'm clear, and I'm sober. Just because I had a rough year and a half does not mean that I gave up on my band. My name has always been synonymous with GREAT WHITE . I came up with the name, and I am entitled to use it. The other GREAT WHITE , with Terry Illous singing my songs and my lyrics, now he's sticking his name into this, covering my tunes. Write your own stuff, dude."

In 1989 Great White was nominated for a Grammy with their song ‘Once Bitten Twice Shy’ for best hard rock single. Great White has sold over 10 million albums. Jack is known for his bluesy voice, Led Zeppelin covers and distinctive sound. Jack Russell’s Great White is full of energy, chemistry and genuine kindness. They revolve their shows around a steadfast connection with their fans.
LYNCH MOB has announced “The Final Ride” , a farewell tour celebrating the band’s 35-year legacy. The tour is expected to kick off in January of 2024 and conclude in March of 2025 on the Monsters Of Rock cruise. George Lynch states: “After 35 years since the inception of LYNCH MOB , I feel the time is right to let this chapter of my musical life fade off into the sunset. I feel the timing is right because of the solidarity and camaraderie of our current lineup. It ensures that we’re leaving a powerful legacy with no regrets.

Jack Russell’s Great White: Russell and Tony Montana Talk New Album, 'He Saw It Comin’'
Back in the Eighties, Jack Russell helped lead Great White to multiplatinum success with bluesy hard rock songs like “Rock Me,” “Save Your Love” and the band’s cover of Ian Hunter’s “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.” More recently, however, Russell has endured a myriad of health issues, overcome a long and intense battle with drugs and alcohol and gone through a messy split with his former band mates.
But now the singer is back with He Saw It Comin’ , the debut album from his current band, Jack Russell’s Great White (Note: There is another outfit, known as Great White, that continues to record and tour with a new singer).
The album shows Russell in fine form, with the singer supported by former Fight guitarist Robby Lochner and co-guitarist Tony Montana, who also played bass in Great White from 1987 to 1992. Russell and Montana recently took some time in between live dates to bring Guitar World up to speed on the band and the new album.
He Saw It Comin’ sounds great. The production is modern, but your voice sounds almost exactly the same as it always has. It sounds like a Great White record. RUSSELL : Well, you can’t escape your roots. I write the way I write. It’s just the ingredients have been changed. But one of the main ingredients is still the same. I always make this analogy, and every time I do my wife cringes, but it’s like baking a cake. In Great White you had me and Mark [Kendall] and Michael [Lardie] who were the prime writers.
So now we have one ingredient—we have Jack Russell. But now we also have Robby Lochner, and on a couple of songs maybe a little sprig of Tony [Montana]. And whatever comes out of that mixture is the song. It’s just a recipe and it’s all about how each of us blend together to make the taste that either you’ll like or you don’t like.
And with my influences, of course it’s gonna sound like Great White a bit. But now I have these incredible musicians, the best I’ve ever played with. And it’s real easy. When I’m with Robby it’s like riding a bicycle. It’s so simple. Our minds are so attuned to one another. I mean, we kept the first song we ever wrote on the album.
What song was that? RUSSELL : “Don’t Let Me Go.” That’s a song we wrote just sitting around on my boat to see if we could write together. And it worked. So it’s great to have a collaborator like that to write with. Because Robby just has ideas I never would have thought of.
You also have Tony Montana, your old Great White bass player, with you now. How did he wind up in your band? RUSSELL : Well, I drugged him and he woke up at rehearsal. [laughs] Actually, he’d been calling me for a while, just kinda like, “Hey Jack, how’s it going?” And I’d go, “What, do you wanna join the band?” He’d say, “Ah, I dunno…” So it was, “Okay. Talk to you later.” And this became more and more frequent. So finally I thought, I’m not even going to ask anymore. I’ll wait. Then I ended up firing the bass player I had at the time and Tony heard about it. So he called me up. “Hey Jack, I’ve been thinking…I think it’s time for me to go out there and play some of those songs again I helped write.” And I said, “I’ve been telling you that!” And he said, “I’m in.” So I went, “Okay. But are you all in?” He said yeah, so I said, “You got the job.”
MONTANA : At that point I was ready to do it. I was really concerned about the legacy of the band, and my legacy with the band. I thought it was being misrepresented. So I went out and decided to take the reins again. I watched people play my music, and music I’d helped make popular and worked hard back in those days to promote. I watched a lot of years where a lot of other guys made a pretty good living doing it to. So I thought maybe it’s time to get out there and take advantage of my own stuff.
You came in as the bass player, but now you’re playing guitar. MONTANA : Truth be told, when I joined Great White back in the day I was teaching guitar and bass in a store in Los Angeles. And I was a music student. I studied composition, classical music in college. I wanted to master both. That’s kind of where my head’s always been. Playing bass was pretty natural for me anyway. So that’s how I started with them. And when I came back to play with Jack, that’s what I was doing as well.
But when it came time to let the other guy go I thought, Maybe I’ll go out in for this… And Jack had forgotten that I played both bass and guitar, so I showed him a couple YouTube videos I had done for Ed Roman Guitars out in Las Vegas. There’s some shredding kind of stuff on there, and Jack was real surprised. He said, “Shit, yeah, of course. Go ahead and play guitar.” So it was nice to finally just come full circle. And then I ended up playing some keys, and some harmonica as well. So now I’m kind of a utility guy, in a way.
How did you factor into the writing and recording? MONTANA : To be honest, I was only really involved with the first single, “Sign of the Times.” I came to Jack with that riff and a little bit of the melody, and Jack and Robby kind of took it from there.
RUSSELL : You know, it wasn’t because we didn’t want Tony or because he was not creative enough. It just happened that the days Robby and I got together to write songs, Tony wasn’t around or he had something else going on. It’s hard enough to pin down two people, let alone three.
Jack, how would you describe your songwriting? RUSSELL : I’ve always found that I’m one of those people that needs to express himself with music. If I don’t, I end up tripling my psychologist’s visits. [laughs] Seriously. It’s such a stress reliever. This is where I bear my life. I become very transparent. I say stuff in songs I would never tell my psychologist. I don’t why that is, but it’s very therapeutic for me. Very cathartic.
A song like “My Addiction” from the new album seems like a good example of one that came from a very honest place. RUSSELL : Yeah, but the song itself, if you listen to it, it says nothing about drugs or alcohol. Because I think everybody is addicted to something. People are addicted to sports, to cleaning their houses, to working out, to cooking, to vacuuming, to hoarding, to everything. So it could be taken any way. But the song is about my addiction, which is drugs and alcohol. When I sing about creeping and crawling around my bedroom floor, well for anyone who’s ever smoked cocaine, that’s what you end up doing—crawling around the floor looking for rocks you might have dropped. And you end up smoking you know, Carpet Fresh. Like, “Oh man!”
As far as your addictions, what was the lowest point? RUSSELL : The lowest point for me was when I woke up in the hospital after five days in a coma. I’d been out drinking with all night, and all day the before. And the next morning my wife couldn’t wake me up. I don’t know how she did it but she got me out of my bedroom and up the stairs and onto the main deck of my boat, and then they she got me out the door and to the emergency room. I woke up there five days later and there was a room full of people—friends, my guitarist, my manager. And my wife is holding my hand.
The doctor comes in and he goes, “I hear you’re some kind of celebrity. I don’t really care.” I go, “Okay.” He says, “I just want you to hear what I’m saying, and I’m not just saying this to scare you. If you drink again the way your wife tells me you drink, you will die. Not maybe. Not should. Not could. You will absolutely die.” So I said, “Okay, well that’s pretty much it for that run!” Right then and there I decided I was going to quit drinking. That was almost a year and a half ago—September 29, 2015.
You sound like you’re in a good place now. RUSSELL : I’m in a great place today. I feel better. I’m happier. I have a better home life. I treat my spouse better. And I treat my band better. I try to treat everybody better. I just want to be a better person. That’s what I work on.
Tony, how would you say Jack is doing these days? MONTANA : As far as Jack is concerned, obviously he’s had some challenges. But when I hear him singing and I compare him to the other guys from that era, from that genre, Jack is singing really well. And not all the guys from that era can say that. The proof is in the pudding. There’s times when I’m onstage listening to him and I just go, “Wow, that’s impressive, man!”
Jack, you went through a very public and acrimonious split with your former band mates a few years ago. They’re still out there playing as Great White with a different singer. How do you feel about it now? RUSSELL : Well, I don’t want to get too much into this it’s been said a thousand times. But I have to say I’ve come to terms in my life where, you know, I’ll take the blame for it. At least some of it. Most of it. It was my fault. If somebody else in the band had cancelled as many tours as I had, I would have fired them, too. And I have. I’ve fired everybody but Kendall. But yeah, I take the blame for it. I was a horrible person at that time. I had such a hard time getting off drugs. Unfortunately, they just got sober before I did, you know? [laughs] But I wish ‘em well. I hope they do well. I just hope I do a little better. [laughs]

A Moscow Free Walking Tour of the Iconic Red Square

No visit to Moscow, Russia is complete unless you take a walk around the famous Red Square and see the iconic sights of the city. One of the best ways to see all the famous landmarks in Moscow and learn a little something about them too is on a free Moscow walking tour through the Red Square.
Continue reading for a sneak peek at what you will see on your free tour in Moscow and for tips on both the tour and visiting the sights. Make sure to save some time during your trip to go inside of the magnificent buildings because you will not be going in the buildings during the tour.
The State Historical Museum
The Moscow free walking tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum . You can’t miss this massive red building. The museum’s interior is almost as spectacular as the artifacts you can see within. Read my post dedicated to the museum here to find out more on what you can see and tips for visiting. Admission is free with the Moscow City Pass .
The Kremlin
Behind the walls of the Kremlin lie the working offices of Russian’s government and president. When visiting the Kremlin you can see the Armory Chamber, Cathedral Square, the Patriach’s Palace and many more cathedrals. You definitely want to buy tickets ahead of time so you avoid the long-lines. You can get free admission with the Moscow City Pass . It’s also worth it to take a guided tour if you don’t speak Russian so you have more of an understanding of what you are seeing.
St. Basil’s Cathedral
If asked to conquer up an image of Moscow, St. Basil’s Cathedral might just be the most likely image you picture. The cathedral has a museum that you can visit at a later time. You can buy tickets at the ticket kiosk outside the cathedral or receive free admission with the Moscow City Pass .
Moskva River
Next up on the tour is the Moskva River which runs through the center of Moscow. A cruise on the Moskva River is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.
GUM Shopping Mall
Who would think a mall would be one of Moscow’s most well-known attractions? GUM shopping mall across from the Kremlin makes up one of the four sides of the Red Square. The stores might be a bit too pricey for shopping, but the gorgeous interior is worth a visit. If that doesn’t convince you, the mall has some of the best ice cream! GUM is the only building you go inside during the free walking tour. There are pay bathrooms you can use while you have a few minutes of free time.
Kazan Cathedral
Located on the northeast corner of the Red Square, the Kazan Cathedral is another impressive dome-shaped building in Moscow that is also an active place of worship. Entering the cathedral is allowed, but remember to be respectful if people are worshipping.
Bolshoi Theater
Contrary to the previous buildings, the Bolshoi Theater isn’t along one of the four sides of the Red Square. Located a few minutes away, the theater is one of the best theaters in the world. Make sure to come back for a guided tour of the inside or make reservations far ahead of time to attend a ballet or opera.
Alexander Gardens
The tour ends near the Alexander Gardens , a free public park located along the western Kremlin walls. The garden’s green lawns, sculptures and water fountains offer a nice place to take a stroll or relax a bit after some busy sightseeing.
You can visit all these sites on your own, but the best part of doing the Moscow free tour is that you learn more information and have the potential to meet new people!
During my tour I started to talk to a woman from Malaysia and she invited me to join her and her friends for a Russian meal afterwards. It’s these little impromptu meetings and opportunities that I love most about traveling and add more to the sightseeing experience. While I was a little hesitant about going to the tour myself I told myself it would be a great opportunity to possibly meet new people. I love when things work out like that!
If you have already seen the iconic sights of the Red Square and are looking for other things to do in Moscow check out my What to Do in Moscow post that gives more off-the beaten track things to do in Moscow!
Moscow Free Walking Tour Visiting Information
Moscow Free Walking Tours
How to Get There
The Moscow Free Walking Tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum (a large red building). The website shows a map with the exact meeting point.
To get to the red square area you can take the blue 3 metro line to the Ploshchad Revolyutsii stop, or the green 2 line to the Teatralnaya station or the red 1 line to the Okhotny Ryad station. For more on how to use the metro read my Moscow Metro Guide .
Tours every day at 10:30am – 1pm in English
If you need a toilet before the start of the tour the Okhotny Ryad and GUM shopping malls are both close to the start of the tour. You will need to pay to use the toilets. There is a quick break mid-way through the tour at the GUM shopping mall where you can use the toilet if needed.
During the mid-way break in the tour you can buy some ice cream at the GUM shopping mall. There aren’t many other options or time for anything else. After the tour there are a lot of restaurants in the area. There are a couple of Varenichnaya №1 locations nearby if you would like some authentic Russian food. Their speciality is Russian dumplings. Another classic choice nearby is Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago. While you can try traditional Russian foods like borscht and Olivier Salad, you may need a reservation. GUM has several restaurants, including a couple of buffets upstairs.
Recommendations
While I would start off your visit to Moscow with a tour of the Red Square, make sure to come back to each place to tour the inside. If you are visiting several sights consider buying the Moscow City Pass to save money on admissions.
Other Tour Options
Another company Moscow Free Tour does a similar free walking tour in the Red Square. Check the site for the details on the starting point and times. If you prefer a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral included check out this tour . For a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to the Kremlin included you may want to take this tour or this one . Even if you don’t typically take tours, I would recommend taking tours as much as possible in Moscow. Many people do not speak English and most information is not in English either.
Where to Stay in Moscow
Find somewhere to stay in Moscow near the Red Square so you are convenient to all the sights!

I am planning to go to Moscow and St. Petersburg this year so reading this was very helpful. I would love to do the walking tour! What time of year did you do it? I am planning to go in August as I really can’t stand the cold 😀 Do you think August might be a good time to visit Moscow? Thank you so much for your information!
I did the walking tour in September. July and August are the best times to visit Moscow in my opinion, so you are going at a great time! I’m a huge fan of taking free walking tours whenever my husband and I travel. We learn more about the history from the local’s perspective. Your walking tour in Moscow looks fun. The St. Basil’s Cathedral is beautiful and would love to see it. Thanks for sharing the must-see places in Moscow!
I’m a big fan of free walking tours too! I completely agree that you get a good perspective and introduction to the history of the city.
I would love to take the walking tour to get a good coverage of the area! The tip about paying for the bathrooms is great. That’s something I didn’t realize when I went to Europe for the first time from the US.
I always find it annoying paying for bathrooms in Europe!
I visited Moscow in June this year for the World Cup and I loved it. St. Basil’s Cathedral was the highlight for me, it’s such an impressive piece of architecture. I would’ve liked to visit more of Russia but maybe next time!
I really enjoyed Moscow during the World Cup too. The city was much livelier than usual!
I have been to St. Petersburg but never to Moscow. I think that these kind of tours are very useful to gather many information but I second your suggestion to visit the palaces inside as they have stunning interior decor and art treasures.
Yes, I think both going on tours and getting an overview and touring the inside of places are good to do.
Shreya Saha
