John Mulaney Announces New Comedy Tour' From Scratch' One Year After Relapse

Mulaney will make stops at 33 cities around the country

John Mulaney is hitting the road.

On Monday, Mulaney announced a country-wide comedy tour beginning in March 2022 — his first tour since leaving rehab in February following a sobriety relapse.

The tour, titled "From Scratch," will hit 33 cities around the country, beginning in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

While this marks Mulaney's first official tour, the comedian has performed several times over the past year. In May, he returned to the stand-up stage with a string of sold-out, well-received shows at New York's City Winery. During the set, Mulaney, 39, addressed his time in rehab and recent life changes.

Along with getting sober, Mulaney's split from ex-wife Anna Marie Tendler was announced earlier this year. The comedian has since begun dating actress Olivia Munn , 41, and the two are expecting their first child together .

During a recent interview, Munn said Mulaney has incorporated their baby news into his standup routine. Per the Los Angeles Times, he joked in one performance about getting "mixed reviews" when he tells people he's having a baby.

"He's so funny, and he's so articulate, and he's so smart," Munn told the outlet of the comedian. "The first time he made that joke, I remember laughing. I'd be with him on the road, and I would hear him tell this joke, and I did feel a sense of healing with it."

"It's hard to be pregnant for the first time and have anybody say anything besides, like, 'Congratulations,'" she added.

Mulaney has also spoken out about his excited about becoming a first-time dad, saying the experience "helped save" him.

"Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery," he said during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers .

Tickets for the From Scratch tour will go on sale Friday December 10 at 10 a.m. local time.

John Mulaney Starts “From Scratch”

john mulaney tour opener

By Staff Writer Sanah Bhardwaj

Lines of millennial and Gen-Z fans stretched past the San Jose SAP Center on the evening of April 8, all waiting patiently for the night’s main attraction: stand-up comedian, actor, and writer John Mulaney. A baby picture of Mulaney, along with his tour title,  “From Scratch,” shined on every billboard and poster surrounding the stadium, creating an overwhelming sense of excitement for the show to come.

john mulaney tour opener

As fans slowly filtered into the stadium starting at 7:30 p.m., they were met with Mulaney’s first opening act, actor-comedian Seaton Smith. Though Smith’s fast-paced, audacious comedy didn’t quite match the easygoing energy of Mulaney’s audience, viewers were receptive and laughed throughout his set. A half hour later, Mulaney sent out his second opener, comedian Ricky Velez. Velez’s laid-back, slow-paced jokes starkly contrasted Smith’s but better matched Mulaney’s sense of humor and sent the audience into fits of laughter. An hour later, the audience roared in anticipation as the speakers of the SAP Center finally boomed: “JOHN MULANEY!”

Though everything seemed the same to the audience, this was no normal show for Mulaney. Despite hundreds of performances under his belt from an 18-year career, his current From Scratch tour marks his first time performing since leaving drug rehabilitation, splitting up from his wife of six years, and having his first child with actress Olivia Munn in November 2021.

Mulaney never hid his substance addiction. In his 2012 special, John Mulaney: New in Town , he joked, “I used to drink, then I drank too much, and I had to stop. That surprises a lot of audiences because I don’t look like someone who used to do anything.” However, even with his openness, Mulaney always relegated his “dark past” to the background of his comedy. Instead, he created and prioritized a “goody-two-shoes” aesthetic, often through self-deprecating humor. In the same show, he quipped, “I look like I was just sitting in a room with a chair eating saltines for 28 years and then walked right out here,” and “When I’m walking down the street, I don’t think anybody goes, ‘Hey, look at that man.’ They’re just like, ‘Woah! That tall child looks terrible!’” Mulaney’s hilariously puritan comedy coupled with his cartoonish voice and animated body language made him stand out against his fellow comedians, and his fans have come to adore him for it.

But in 2021, Mulaney’s clean public persona fell apart. Following his rehab stint, hasty divorce, and new child just months after his separation, public backlash grew. In addition, because Mulaney had centered so much of his comedic and personal image around his charming relationship with his wife, their separation made fans distrust Mulaney’s character, even though they didn’t know much about the divorce. They started to question whether the Mulaney they saw on Netflix was actually the real him.

On April 8, Mulaney sauntered on stage slower than usual, but he donned the same cheery tone. Within the first five minutes of the show, Mulaney addressed his apparent lack of energy — “I’ve gotten slower in my old age” — and instantly jested about his past drug addiction when referring to how vivacious he used to be — “I wonder what caused that.” Mulaney’s physical verve was at a bare minimum; instead, he was slow-paced, letting the audience digest every line he spoke.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by John Mulaney (@johnmulaney)

Mulaney looks out on stage before his “ From Scratch” show in Dallas, TX

Unfortunately, these lines weren’t too easy to swallow. Mulaney uses From Scratch as an opportunity to try to piece his broken reputation back together — he knows his audience will never view him the same as they did before his addiction and divorce, and he compensates by reminding the audience how horrible he views his life to be — “Don’t be like me,” he reminded young ones in the audience. This uncomfortable self-awareness was a recurring theme throughout the night, as almost the full hour of the show was focused on Mulaney’s addiction and recovery process. The audience’s laughs seemed to be out of awkward obligation instead of from the gut because Mulaney only talked about his problems. While this is fine in moderation, Mulaney often seemed defensive or as if he was telling jokes for the audience’s validation. Whether it was jokes about his “star-studded [addiction] intervention” or how he manipulated doctors into giving him prescription drugs he didn’t need, it seemed as if Mulaney’s show was cathartic for only him, not for anyone else.

That’s not to say Mulaney wasn’t funny. He’s John Mulaney. His fans love him unconditionally, and with every opportunity he gave his audience to burst into fits of laughter, they took it. Still, the “goody-two-shoes” Mulaney we once knew is long gone, replaced with one who isn’t afraid to discuss the experiences that make him human. Of course, Mulaney embracing his humanity instead of hiding it for the audience’s sake is a good thing; however, one can’t help but feel like Mulaney’s humor has become too dark and tragic to be relatable. Laughs now come from a place of pity, not adoration, and that’s a dismal thing.

Overall, From Scratch does its best to make light of a truly horrendous year for John Mulaney, but its jokes don’t land as well as they should. Maybe it’s because Mulaney is performing so soon after leaving rehab, or maybe Mulaney is using From Scratch to distract himself from the life-changing events that have transformed him within the last few years. Regardless, one thing is for sure: Mulaney is trying his hardest to rebuild from the ground up, and one can only hope that he succeeds.

I was quite fortunate to see John Mulaney perform at the Moda Center in Portland last Friday night—and his performance was impeccably hilarious and had me laughing so hard that I almost became hoarse! He is a true gem of a comedian and his raw talent is amazing! He has the brand of comic genius that I savor-bordering on a mix of Jewish sarcastic masochism and beautiful irony that fills your heart with the realization that this guy has comic genius coming out of every pore in his body!He truly is a Genius!!!I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up with a late night show of his own!He deserves it.

Theater | review: john mulaney shocks the united center, spinning stories of rehab and not-niceness.

Comedian John Mulaney launched his "From Scratch" tour with 2021...

John Mulaney, a bit heavier in the face since last we saw him, a bit more weathered since his personal life imploded publicly, now looking eager to shed his Catholic choirboy air at 39, stepped out of the wings at the United Center on Thursday night with visibly watery eyes. He appeared overwhelmed and humbled. Here was the first of three sold-out arena shows, in his hometown, and on a scale seldom reserved for a funny writer with a microphone and a glass of water on a stool. Then he plowed forward, characteristically undercutting the moment: Being here, in the great house of Michael Jordan, reminded him if you’re white and grow up in Lincoln Park with no major concerns, you can do great things.

He wore a tuxedo and boomed in his trademark carnival barker cadence, but considering the size of the audience and squirminess that followed, it felt slyly subversive, even thrillingly electric. Albeit, the way you feel when anyone is telling you a story so intimate you’re not sure you should be hearing this.

Mulaney, in his previous life, liked to remind audiences that he used to have addictions and people were surprised to hear this, since he didn’t look like “someone who used to do anything.”

He owned his comfort.

He was supremely confident, outwardly fun, frenetic and faux-positive. He noted this early on. It was the drugs, he said. He said that he knew his vibe seems different these days, and then leaned into the audience and asked a 12-year-old boy if he knew what happened to him. The child did not. He asked the child’s name. “Pat,” the kid said. “You know in other cities, kids aren’t named that,” Mulaney said, and then for the majority of a 90-minute show, he filled Pat in — on shady prescriptions, arrogance and pettiness.

john mulaney tour opener

Or rather, Mulaney recounted the details of an addiction so harrowing that, for months, the news was loud and constant. Everyone knew too much about him — a lot of it counter to his pleasant facade. In fact, among the tour merchandise at the United Center, there’s a T-shirt with a clever dig at the audience’s voyeurism. On the front, it just reads: “I saw him right after he got outta rehab.” For those who don’t know: Mulaney was addicted to cocaine, Klonopin, Xanax; he was smoking heavily, drinking heavily. In 2020, after 30 days in rehab and a relapse, he was subjected to an intervention by his comedy friends. He returned to rehab for another 60 days. Also, his marriage fell apart as he began dating actress Olivia Munn and the couple had a baby. For a guy who looked so tastefully composed, it was all genuinely scandalous.

What Mulaney faces these days is the question of how much of his persona to replace.

Much of his act was centered on hilarious and relatively meaningless faux-outrages — abusive airline service, greedy college telemarketers — and he seems eager for a fresher, more intense register. The result are moments in this new show so unsettling and chilly — he barks at the nice women in charge of his intervention that she shouldn’t be fooled by his warmhearted persona — you cringe. He demands a free haircut at “Saturday Night Live” during a week when he isn’t hosting. In rehab, he’s disgusted the other patients haven’t heard of him. (He says, “ask your teenage daughter, or your son if he’s not athletic.”)

The times when he still throws in the usual stand-up material — Russia’s crazy; there are too many podcasts; as a child, he asked for a membership to the Chicago History Museum — it distracts. He even noted it seemed “phony” to sound so upbeat. He’s right. Before I give you the wrong idea, understand: John Mulaney is always fun to watch. But he’s evolving, and that old faux-vulnerability sounds real now.

As large as the United Center may be, it went silent at times, not from a lack of laughs but because Mulaney is fundamentally a memoirist and a web spinner now offering truths rarely heard outside therapy. The story of his intervention and rehab — the heart of the show — is so compelling and well crafted it’s reminiscent of Richard Pryor’s classic bit about running on fire down the street after a night of freebasing. It also shares DNA with storytelling comics like Hannah Gadsby and even Bill Burr who, with each new Netflix special, strips back his righteousness. Mulaney, like Burr, is asking what a coherent person should look like — while simultaneously recognizing that life doesn’t allow coherence.

That’s the laugh.

It’s thuddingly obvious to say stand-up comedy demands vulnerability — here is a profession in which you stand in front of people, tell stories and expose some bit of yourself and in return, if it works , they repay you by laughing at your problems. Mulaney — whose tour is aptly titled “From Scratch” — is reinventing himself right now, and raising the stakes of those problems. But generously so. As a hometown encore Thursday, he did one of his best loved routines. It was a victory lap, a story of a young Mulaney at home in Lincoln Park. Alongside his newer, unnerving material, it also sounded very long ago.

John Mulaney had to deal with poop in the tub from Malcolm.

John Mulaney Just Dealt With A Messy Parenting Milestone With His Son Malcolm

Baby’s First Floater.

Olivia Munn was in New York City over the weekend, leaving partner John Mulaney and the couple’s 2-year-old son Malcolm behind at home. While she was away, Munn missed a parenting milestone and she probably wasn’t all that sad about it. Because baby’s first floater in the tub is not exactly as exciting as baby’s first steps or baby’s first words, and Munn got to experience the secondhand joy of Mulaney texting her about it. Texts which she generously shared with her Instagram followers so we could all experience the comedian trying to deal with Malcolm pooping in the bathtub.

The Office Party star took to Instagram on Monday to share a recent text exchange with Mulaney. “I’m in NY while John’s at home with Malcolm” she wrote on Instagram alongside a screenshot of their exchange to the tune of Harry Chapin singing that famed father and son song, “Cat’s In The Cradle.”

The first text from Mulaney read, “Malcolm pooped in the tub.”

Munn replied, “Oh my god. Did you wash him in the shower after?”

Anyone who has ever been the parent at home dealing with a floater in the tub while the other parent is away will understand Mulaney’s lightly disgruntled reply. “Of course he had sh*t on him.”

John Mulaney had to deal with Malcolm pooping in the tub.

Mulaney might have been shocked and dismayed, but pooping in the tub is unfortunately pretty common for toddlers. Basically, they just get super relaxed in the tub and things happen. It’s messy and gross, no doubt about it. But it sounds like Mulaney handled it like a champ.

“Dada is going to unwind silently and watch a movie after Malcolm is down and then sleep so early,” he texted Munn, before adding that he and Malcolm had enjoyed a fun day of adventure so on balance, “my day was awesome just crazy.”

Besides, Mulaney knows a thing or two about changing diapers and dealing with poop now that he’s a dad. When Munn was dealing with multiple surgeries last year after her breast cancer diagnosis, Mulaney was a “hands-on” father who took on the bulk of the workload with their son. Something Munn has since praised him for. So really, what’s a little floater in the tub in the long run? He’s got it under control.

The R&K Guide To Moscow

The World Cup is upon us, but you could argue that it’s already a relic from another era, a time when Putin was looking for peaceable engagement with the West, before he annexed Crimea and unleashed his trolls on the world. But if ordinary Russians are supposed to play the part of pariah, they haven’t been told. It has been a long time since Moscow was this pleasant to visit. The city center is safe, sanitized, ready for your visit. Yes, the calm is a sign of an increasingly efficient autocracy. But we’ve known Moscow through many iterations, and for the casual visitor, this is one of the best yet. (Visit our St. Petersburg guide here.)
