You’ve probably heard this line a million times before, but maybe you couldn’t quite understand what it was trying to illustrate.

The most successful people will tell you that the process of accomplishing something is far more valuable than the end result. You learn much more from all of your experiences and encounters than you do from arriving at the destination.

Ultimately, the process is the greatest reward. The sweetest moments come when you realize that you have attained the final goal because of everything you have experienced.

You look back on the mistakes, the challenges, and everything you had to endure—but you also celebrate the fact that you faced your problems head-on. Your journey through life is what makes you human.

The Unexpected Ways Our Lifes Journey Defines Who We Are

  • July 7, 2022

Who we are is often shaped by our lifes journey and experiences, both good and bad.

Our lifes journey can take many different paths, and each one helps to define us a little more. We learn and grow from every experience, and each new adventure helps us to become more of who we truly are.

But what exactly is this thing called identity? And how does it change over time?

These are questions that psychologists and philosophers have been pondering for centuries, and there are still no easy answers. But that doesn’t mean we can’t explore and try to understand the topic better. So let’s take a journey (pun intended) into the complex world of an identity!

lifes journey

What is identity?

The dictionary definition of identity is “The identity of a person or place is the characteristics they have that distinguish them from others.”

But of course, there’s much more to it than that. Our identity comprises all the different aspects of ourselves that we present to the world. It’s how we see ourselves and how others see us.

We can say it is our personal brand , the image we project to the world. But it’s also so much more than that.

journey of my life

How does our lifes journey shape our identities?

It is often said that we are a product of our lifes journey and the experiences we have along the way. Indeed, every experience and decision contributes to our identity’s complex tapestry. That is why each person is unique and complex in their own way.

As we journey through life, we constantly encounter new people and experiences that shape our identity.

It’s fascinating to see how many factors shape our identities.

Our upbringing, relationships, the love (or lack thereof) we receive from others, the friends and teachers who influence us, past experiences and events, and even the media we consume can all impact our thoughts and actions.

As a result, our beliefs and values are constantly evolving. That is why our identity is not static; it is ever-changing and dynamic.

Just as no two people are exactly alike, no two journeys are exactly alike either.

Life is an ongoing journey of discovery , and our identity is the map that charts the course.

5 steps to understand better why you are who you are.

Why am I the way I am?

That is a question we all ask ourselves at some point in our lives. And it’s not an easy question to answer. The truth is that we are all products of our upbringing, encounters, experiences, and our environment.

One of the fascinating things about humans is our minds and how complex they are. As a result, we can never fully understand it, but we can start by learning more about ourselves through self-discovery .

As we mentioned, our life experiences shape our thinking, feelings, and behavior. However, if you’re curious about your motivations and behaviors, there are some steps you can take to start understanding yourself better:

#1. Reflect on your lifes journey: Make sense of your past

You can start by looking at your past experiences. Your past, both good and bad, has helped to shape who you are today. So, by reflecting on your lifes journey, you can start to understand why you think and act the way you do.

First, think about your childhood and early social interactions. Often, our early life experiences leave us bent out of shape, influencing our behavior in ways we are unaware of. So, to begin understanding, it is essential to ask yourself some tough questions about your past:

  • What kind of environment did you grow up in?
  • How did your parents/guardians treat you?
  • What were some of the most painful experiences you have had?
  • What did you learn from them?
  • How have they influenced your behavior?

These factors can play a significant role in shaping who you are as an adult.

Once you better understand your past, you can begin to work on making peace with it. That will help you move forward in your life and make positive changes in the present.

One can do this in many ways, and you don’t have to stick with just one method!  Journaling is one way to begin diving into your past.

One study showed a “statistically significant relationship between life story coherence and psychological well-being.” That means you can improve your mental health when you make sense of your past. So, if you have things in your past that you’re struggling to make sense of, take some time to reflect and process them.

It can be difficult and emotional to face your past, so give yourself plenty of time and space to do so.

#2. Challenge your beliefs

Another factor that shapes us into the person we are is our beliefs. Whether it’s political, religious, scientific, or personal, challenging your beliefs can be a gratifying process.

  • Are there things you believe about yourself and the world around you that you’ve never questioned?
  • Why do you believe them?
  • Are they based on facts or feelings?

We all have certain assumptions and beliefs about people, situations, and the world around us. These assumptions and beliefs are often based on our past experiences or what others have told us . But, more often than not, when we question our beliefs, we discover that they are not as accurate as we thought.

It can be difficult and even uncomfortable when you first begin challenging a belief you have held for years.

You might feel like your whole worldview is being shaken or that you’re somehow betraying your beliefs. But by pushing yourself to examine why you believe what you do and how those beliefs came to be, you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself and what’s important to you.

To really challenge your beliefs, it’s essential to approach the process with an open mind . Be willing to consider that you might be wrong, and be prepared to revise your beliefs if new evidence arises.

It can also be helpful to talk to people with different beliefs than you to understand their perspectives better.

Ultimately, the goal of challenging your beliefs is not to necessarily change them but to learn more about the reasons why you hold them. Doing so can give you a deeper understanding of yourself and what’s important to you.#

#3. Challenge your self-limiting beliefs

In addition to challenging your beliefs, it’s also essential to challenge your self-limiting beliefs. We all have self-limiting beliefs.

Often, self-limiting beliefs are based on our past experiences or what others have told us.

  • I’m not good enough.
  • I’ll never be successful.
  • Other people are always out to get me.

These self-limiting beliefs can often be harmful and can hold us back in life.

If you believe you’re not good enough, you might not even try to achieve your goals. Or, if you think that other people are always out to get you, you might not bother trying to build relationships with others.

That is why it’s important to question these self-limiting beliefs and to see them for what they really are: just thoughts in your head.

Just because you’ve always been told that you’re not good enough doesn’t mean it’s true. And just because you’ve had some bad experiences doesn’t mean that all people are out to get you.

By challenging your self-limiting beliefs, you can start to see things more clearly and make better decisions in your life.

If you’ve been all your life stuck because of your self-limiting beliefs, now it’s time to do something about it.

Start seeing what’s possible for your life! By using the power of future self visualization , you can envision your ideal future and your higher self and begin to take steps toward making it a reality.

#4. Look for patterns in your behavior.

Next, consider your current situation.

Are there any patterns in your life that seem to contribute to negative behaviors or emotions?

One place to start looking for clues is in your behavior . After all, we’re all creatures of habit, and our behavior patterns can say a lot about us.

So, take a close look at the things you do daily.

  • Are you always running late?
  • Do you have a hard time saying no?
  • Do you tend to procrastinate?
  • Why do you keep being drawn to unavailable people?

Really understand where these patterns came from and what they mean for you. What are these patterns trying to tell you about yourself?

It could mean that, in the past, you’ve had trouble setting boundaries because you didn’t want to hurt people’s feelings. It could also signify that you tend to put others before yourself.

Maybe you’re attracted to unavailable people because you grew up feeling like you were never good enough. Because your parents or siblings always made you feel like you were never good enough. As a result, you might have developed a pattern of chasing after emotionally unavailable people.

Or maybe your friends in high school always made fun of you, so you created a habit of self-sabotage.

These are just some examples, but the point is that you can learn a lot about yourself by understanding the patterns in your behavior. You can also begin to see how these patterns might negatively impact your life.

Understanding the origins of our patterns can help change them. And it will be easier to change if you know why you’re behaving a certain way.

#5. Understand your triggers.

A critical part of understanding your identity is understanding your triggers.

  • What are the things that set you off?
  • What makes you react in specific ways?

For example, maybe you get angry when someone criticizes you. Why do you feel that way? Perhaps it’s because when you were young, your parents were always critical of you, making you feel bad about yourself.

Or maybe you feel shy and uncomfortable when you’re around new people. Perhaps it’s because you had a bad experience in the past, like being made fun of by other kids at school.

These are your triggers, and it’s essential to be aware of them. Once you know what sets you off, you can start to work on managing your reactions and triggers more constructively.

Take some time to think about who you are and why you are the way you are. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it. The better you understand yourself, the more you can grow and change in the ways you want to.

Accept and embrace your lifes journey.

Life is a journey and we all have a unique story that makes us who we are. Some of us are born into privilege, while others have to fight for everything we have. Some of us are naturally gifted, while others have to work harder than anyone else to get by. But each of us has something special that makes us who we are.

The important thing is to accept our story and use it as a source of strength rather than weakness.

So embrace the journey, whatever it may be. Embrace the ups and downs, the twists and turns. Embrace the good times and the bad because it’s all part of what makes us special and unique.

However, if you feel stuck, seek out help . A therapist can provide guidance and support as you work to develop a greater understanding of yourself. You can also try to work through it on your own with the help and support of your loved ones. Whichever route you choose, ensure that you take care of yourself during this process.

journey of my life

Final thoughts – Lifes journey

Our life is a continuous journey. It is a never-ending process of personal growth , learning, and self-discovery .

Looking back at my life, I can now see and truly understand that everything happens for a reason.

If it weren’t for all the hardships I’ve faced, every job I’ve had, and every person I’ve met, I wouldn’t be the strong, independent person I am today. Thus, I’m grateful for all my challenges because they’ve made me who I am. Without them, I would be a completely different person.

The truth is that we all want to be someone better than who we are today. But in order to do that, we need to first understand ourselves . Only then can we begin making the necessary changes to become the person we want to be . It’s not going to be easy, but it’s definitely worth it.

The key is to accept and enjoy your lifes journey, no matter how challenging it may be. Remember, you have the power to change who you are. And that is definitely something worth celebrating.

Every day, we are faced with new challenges and opportunities. It’s up to us what we do with them. So don’t give up on yourself. Take the first step today.

11 Life Journey Poems

  • The Journey Poet Unknown You got to have some trouble in this rough old world of ours, You got to fight the bumblebee, sometimes to pick the flowers; Your going find fin' a heap of roughness in the rocky road, Before you get what you can rest and lay aside the load. But be humble, and don't grumble, Because you sometimes slip and stumble, And seems to drop behind the rest of all the hustlin' throng. Don't stop an' start a-whining And a-whimpering and a pinning, But pick your feet up, honey, and go traveling along. You may have fears of troubles that will hit you hard someday, But they're bound to catch you if you halt along the way. You got to keep a moving. Some are fast and some are slow. But all that's looked for from you is to do the best you know. So don't you wait and worry, If you fall down in your hurry, And never mind the chaffing And the hollering and the laughing, Just pull yourself together as you hum a little song, But pick your feet up, honey, and go travelling along.

attitude poems

  • A Journey Poet: Dr. M. Coleman Harris Life is like a journey Taken on a train With a pair of travellers At each windowpane. I may sit beside you All the journey through, Or I may sit elsewhere Never knowing you. But if fate should make me To sit by your side, Let’s be pleasant travelers; It’s so short a ride.
  • A Purpose Poet: Catherine Pulsifer Looking around the world, big and small, Every one of us is on a journey to help all. A purpose to fulfill, a role to play in society. An opportunity to excel, not for anxiety! We have special gifts, each one of us; Our life is truly a precious trust! On life's journey find love and grace; Life is meant to be lived, it is not a race.

poems about purpose

  • Life's Journey Poet: Ella Wheeler Wilcox As we speed out of youth's sunny station The track seems to shine in the light, But it suddenly shoots over chasms Or sinks into tunnels of night. And the hearts that were brave in the morning Are filled with repining and fears, As they pause at the City of Sorrow Or pass through the Valley of Tears. But the road of this perilous journey The hand of the Master has made; With all its discomforts and dangers, We need not be sad or afraid. Paths leading from light into darkness, Ways plunging from gloom to despair, Wind out through the tunnels of midnight To fields that are blooming and fair. Though the rocks and the shadows surround us, Though we catch not one gleam of the day, Above us fair cities are laughing, And dipping white feet in some bay. And always, eternal, for ever, Down over the hills in the west, The last final end of our journey, There lies the great Station of Rest. 'Tis the Grand Central point of all railways, All roads unite here when they end; 'Tis the final resort of all tourists, All rival lines meet here and blend. All tickets, all seasons, all passes, If stolen or begged for or bought, On whatever road or division, Will bring you at last to this spot. If you pause at the City of Trouble, Or wait in the Valley of Tears, Be patient, the train will move onward, And rush down the track of the years. Whatever the place is you seek for, Whatever your game or your quest, You shall come at the last with rejoicing To the beautiful City of Rest. You shall store all your baggage of worries, You shall feel perfect peace in this realm, You shall sail with old friends on fair waters, With joy and delight at the helm. You shall wander in cool, fragrant gardens With those who have loved you the best, And the hopes that were lost in life's journey You shall find in the City of Rest.

train of life

  • Silver And Gold Poet: Unknown Get of this life I shall never take Things of silver and gold I make. All that I cherish and hoard away, After I leave, on earth must stay. All that I gather and all that I keep, I must leave behind when I fall asleep. And I often wonder what I shall own In the other life when I pass along. What shall they find and what shall they see In the soul that answers the call for me? Shall the Great Judge learn, when my task is through, That my spirit has gathered some riches, too? Or shall at the last it be mine to find That all I'd worked for I'd left behind?
  • Roses and Sunshine Poet: Edgar A. Guest Rough is the road I am journeying now, Heavy the burden I'm bearing to-day; But I'm humming a song, as I wander along, And I smile at the roses that nod by the way. Red roses sweet, Blooming there at my feet, Just dripping with honey and perfume and cheer; What a weakling I'd be If I tried not to see The joy and the comfort you bring to us here. Just tramping along o'er the highway of life, Knowing not what's ahead but still doing my best; And I sing as I go, for my soul seems to know In the end I shall come to the valley of rest. With the sun in my face And the roses to grace The roads that I travel, what have I to fear? What a coward I'd be If I tried not to see The roses of hope and the sunshine of cheer.

poems about hope

  • Our Journey Poet: Catherine Pulsifer, © 2020 Our journey through life has its ups and downs Sometimes feelings of being sad and others of a clown We all have highs and the lows Many happy times and times of sorrow. But there is one factor that makes a difference It is the attitude of your preference. Do you look for the good or do you see the bad Your attitude determines whether you're happy or sad. Our journey can be negative or it can be positive Is just depends on our life perspective. No matter what happens, no matter the time Find the good and upward you will climb. Life is too short to sit and moan Seize the good and it can change your life tone Our journey through life can be a happy one A positive attitude can bring more fun!

positive poems

  • Life And Moods Poet: Patience Strong Moods will lead you such a dance - If you just give them half a chance. They'll lift you up and fling you down. They'll turn a smile into a frown. They'll drive you into black despairs. They'll creep upon you unaware... Your friends will drop you one by one - no wonder, for there's not much fun - in people who are bright and gay - and dull, and bored with life, next day... So don't be swayed by each new mood... Just throw them off, or they'll intrude - and spoil some bright and happy hour... For you, yourself, give them power.

poems about being happy

  • It's The Journey That's Important... Poet: John McLeod Life, sometimes so wearying Is worth its weight in gold The experience of traveling Lends a wisdom that is old Beyond our 'living memory' A softly spoken prayer: "It's the journey that's important, Not the getting there!" Ins and outs and ups and downs Life's road meanders aimlessly? Or so it seems, but somehow Leads us where we need to be, And being simply human We oft question and compare... "Is the journey so important Or the getting there?" And thus it's always been That question pondered down the ages By simple men with simple ways To wise and ancient sages... How sweet then, quietly knowing Reaching destination fair: "It's the journey that's important, Not the getting there!"

it's the journey that's important, not the getting there!

  • These Would I Keep Poet: Lida Marie Erwin These would I keep: My faith in men, Though one may stumble now and then - A faith which helps me still to see What God intends a man to be. A cheery heart, in spite of fate; The strength to work, the patience to wait; A hand that lifts a brother up And shares with him the bitter cup. A spirit calm, despite the storm. Which sees through clouds, the stalwart form Of Him who stilled the maddened wave - Is ever near to help and save. The optimism childhood had; The simple trust that made me glad; The beauty of life in its crimson dawn - These would I keep as I journey on.

optimistic poems

  • The Light Of A Cheerful Heart Poet: Max Ehrmann I tell you that you and I and the commonest person are all journeying the same way, hemmed in by the same narrow path, leading to the eternal years. We pride ourselves over our particular superiority; but really there is little difference between us; And in this journey over the thousand hills and valleys called life, he is wisest who is patient where the way is hard, has faith when he does not understand, and carries into the dark places the light of a cheerful heart.

V McCallister

4 Stars small

Easy to follow – booklet works well with video. Covers PSHCE well.

Really useful relevant topics, easy to deliver. Like the video with time for discussion points. Directs you when to do the task. Really well ordered.

Excellent content and range of topics covered, really accessible and delivered at exactly the right level for 6th form age.

The videos are engaging and have a good wide range of topics, I have used them frequently with year 13 and they have brought about many discussion points.

Useful and focused. Easy to use for staff. Sometimes students don’t buy in to all the tasks, especially if they involve researching beyond the lesson e.g. via google. But mostly excellent, and definitely better than anything I’ve done in the past.

I got severe acne after falling sick from appendicitis. The experience inspired me to start a plant-based-skincare company.

  • Jenny Evans became interested in wellness after a traumatic appendicitis experience in her 20s.
  • She's now a facialist and owns a skincare company, BeautyGrass, that sells CBD-infused products.
  • Evans' approach to wellness embraces natural ingredients and exercise.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jenny Evans, a facialist and business owner in Los Angeles. It's been edited for length and clarity.

I spent my high-school years as a jock with naturally clear skin. But while I was in school in my 20s to become a furniture designer, my life changed after I developed appendicitis.

The infection turned my whole body toxic. I ended up in the hospital and was prescribed a lengthy list of antibiotics that made me feel sick. My perfect skin erupted into grade 4 severe purple acne across my face.

I needed a reset. I felt lost and was looking for anything to make me feel better. A friend recommended facials. I was a student working as a bartender and couldn't really afford weekly facials. But I stretched my budget thin to try it. After one session, I was hooked. I asked my facialist how she got started, and she told me she went to esthetician school. I enrolled almost immediately.

Becoming an esthetician set me on a journey to heal myself from the inside out. Because I grew up near the Santa Cruz Mountains and had a master gardener for a mother, I always had a love of earth and nature. I continued my education after getting my certification, researching natural remedies and learning Eastern techniques such as cupping to incorporate into my practice.

I discovered the importance of touch

When I started my healing journey, I became most connected to my hands. I realized they're my greatest tools. While working as a bartender, I developed tendonitis and rheumatoid arthritis from flipping bottles. Now I have an intense appreciation for my hands. I practice acupuncture, use herbal remedies, and treat them as my greatest asset in my work.

Related stories

Human beings crave touch as part of their nature. During the COVID-19 health crisis, I had to close my business three times. I, like everyone else, felt touch-starved and without connection. Those years were some of my most challenging, but I came out of them reinvigorated with purpose.

My knowledge of natural remedies turned into a business

For wellness practices, I started to look at the world around me and find solutions in nature.

A predictive moment was when I was a child, and I gave my mother a plant because I thought it looked beautiful — she told me it was a cannabis leaf. Later, as an adult, I started researching the properties of cannabis, including its link to apoptosis induction .

After decades of working as an esthetician, I launched my beauty brand, BeautyGrass , shortly before the pandemic started. It incorporates cannabis and other natural ingredients into skincare products. I experimented with how CBD, a non-psychoactive component of cannabis, could affect the skin and tested to see which amounts could potentially help with eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

As I navigate owning a beauty brand, I'm always hearing about the latest trend. There are many products and multistep skincare routines on the market. BeautyGrass is making trends by creating handmade plant-based products crafted sustainably.

Maintaining a space of peace and calm is essential to Saving Faces, my beauty treatment and facials business, and BeautyGrass. I designed the location as a sanctuary to help the outside world fade away. The surfaces are adorned with various crystals , including a large piece of amethyst, my birthstone, that my husband gifted me.

Now I'm living a more mindful life

My approach to skincare has always been "less is more." I use a BeautyGrass hydrating oil in the morning and serums on occasion. I've read a lot of research that suggests time in the sun can help improve your mental health, so I don't limit my exposure, and I make sure to put on a little bit of sunscreen. When I'm in the sun, I also hydrate my body by eating water-rich foods such as watermelon and cucumber.

I also practice physical wellness in my regular Pilates lessons. Six years ago, I discovered the Lagree method, which emphasizes slower counts, allowing me to feel more centered and confront my thoughts.

One of my goals is to pass what I have learned on to my kids. I think they're great, but I'm worried — especially about my 13-year-old daughter — about the parts of their lives I can't control. I teach them to consider how the physical world affects them. I'm not going to try to stop my daughter from putting on sheet masks at sleepovers that make her face red and irritated. But I want her to ask herself, "How does it make me feel?"

My appendicitis changed my direction in life, but it led me on a path that I'm incredibly grateful for. I feel more connected to my body and have a greater understanding of the world around me. I know now that my goal is to create a stable environment for my family and my clients in an unstable world.

Where Is Charles Bridgeman From 'My 600-lb Life' Now? He's Lost a Significant Amount of Weight

While Charles qualified for weight loss surgery, he declined the offer, claiming he didn't want to move to Houston and leave his family.

Kelly Corbett - Author

Apr. 17 2024, Published 8:01 p.m. ET

TLC's My 600-lb Life highlights the weight loss attempts of severely obese individuals across the country as they work with esteemed bariatric surgeon Dr. Now .

The individuals the show features all have one thing in common: They're addicted to food and the feeling it gives them.

During the Season 12 finale, we meet Charles Bridgeman from Everett, Wash., who knows all about grappling with a life-threatening addiction. While food was always a comfort for him, he was addicted to meth for a decade. His addiction prompted his mom and grandma to kick him out, leaving him homeless for quite some time and even resulting in him getting arrested.

Fortunately, Charles went to rehab and got clean a few years back. But this shining achievement was eclipsed by the fact that he seemed to have replaced drugs with food.

When we meet Charles, who is in his early 30s, he is living with his brother, Brad, and sister, Cheyana. Brad's full-time job has become taking care of Charles, who cannot make himself food and can only walk a few steps at a time before needing to rest.

Charles's journey on My 600-lb Life was an interesting one. He and Dr. Now butted heads several times and Charles often didn't follow Dr. Now's directions. Usually, when this happens on the show, the individual ends up gaining weight and getting farther away from their goal.

However, Charles did lose weight, and Dr. Now did end up approving him for weight loss surgery. But Charles had seemingly gotten so comfortable at home with Brad, who kept him on track, that he declined the offer. He said didn't want to move to Houston for the surgery and leave his family, even if it was only temporary.

At the end of the episode, Charles said he wanted to continue his weight loss efforts in Everett and possibly reconsider surgery in the future. That said, where is Charles now? Did he ever get bariatric surgery, and was he able to continue losing weight on his own?

Charles and his brother Brad in Dr. Now's office in Houston, Texas

Where is Charles Bridgeman from 'My 600-lb Life' now?

Since his time on My 600-lb Life , Charles appears to be doing very well. According to his Facebook profile , he is still living in Everett, Wash., and has continued to lose weight.

Charles has been spending time with his dogs and recently took them to the dog park, illustrating that he's still making an effort to go outside and do more activities.

However, the biggest update is Charles's current weight. At the beginning of his episode, he was believed to be over 700 pounds. After adopting Dr. Now's diet plan and developing an exercise routine, he was down to 604 pounds by the end of the episode, losing well over 100 pounds on his journey.

Omg down to 385 Posted by Charles Bridgeman on  Wednesday, September 27, 2023

That being said, in September 2023, Charles revealed some exciting news: "Omg down to 385," he wrote on Facebook.

It's unclear if this substantial weight loss was strictly from dieting or if Charles did get bariatric surgery, which would likely expedite his weight loss. However, we are glad to hear that Charles hasn't given up and is continuing to lose weight.

'Unsung Hero' sheds light on the Smallbone family's incredible journey to musical stardom

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Unsung Hero', an upcoming American Christian drama film directed by Richard Ramsey and Joel Smallbone, is based on a remarkable true story.

Starring Joel as David Smallbone, Daisy Betts as Helen Smallbone, Kirrilee Berger as Rebecca St. James, Jonathan Jackson as Eddie DeGarmo, and Candace Cameron Bure as Kay Albright, the film delves into the story of the Smallbone family, focusing on siblings St James, Joel, and Luke, as they navigate their path to becoming Christian recording artists.

The official synopsis of the film reads, "David Smallbone, his pregnant wife, and their seven children leave Australia to rebuild their lives in America. David and Helen realize the musical talent of their children, who become two of the most successful acts in Inspirational Music history."

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on Friday, April 26, 2024, by Lionsgate.

Let's discuss the real-life story of 'Unsung Hero'.

The film delves into David Smallbone's remarkable journey from Australia to the United States

'Unsung Hero' chronicles the pivotal journey of David Smallbone, who made the life-changing decision to relocate his family from Australia to Nashville, Tennessee, United States, in 1991.

After his music company collapsed, David, a music promoter, decided to seek a fresh start in the United States, as reported by The Tennessean.

Despite the challenges that lay ahead, David's resilience and determination to overcome adversity served as a beacon of hope for his family.

With just their children, a few suitcases, and a deep love for music, David and his pregnant wife, Helen Smallbone, embarked on a journey to rebuild their lives.

According to The Tennessean, the journey from Australia to Nashville was neither easy nor inexpensive for the Smallbone family. They had to use the majority of their family's savings to cover the cost of airfare.

As the imminent birth of their seventh child approached, David remained unemployed. Despite the uncertainty of their circumstances, Helen gave birth to their seventh child, marking a poignant moment in their journey.

After the Smallbone family settled in Nashville, David actively searched for employment. He also took his oldest daughter, St James, who was 14 years old at the time, up and down Nashville's Music Row, aiming to secure her a record deal.

Two years after their move to Nashville, St James' dedication and talent paid off when she was signed to ForeFront Records.

Who is Rebecca St. James?

Rebecca St James, the daughter of David and Helen, is an Australian-American contemporary Christian singer, songwriter, and actress.

St James achieved fame in the late 1990s with her RIAA-certified Gold albums 'God' and 'Pray.' The album 'Pray' notably won a Grammy Award in 1999 for Best Rock Gospel Album, solidifying her status as a talented and respected artist in the music industry.

During this time, St James' music not only garnered commercial success but also connected with listeners on a deeper level.

According to a report by Solo Parent Organization, Helen, St  James' mother, played a crucial role in her daughter's career, offering unwavering support and encouragement throughout her journey to fame.

St James is also best known for films like 'Left Behind: The Movie,' 'The First Easter,' 'Unidentified,' 'Sarah's Choice,' 'Rising Stars,' and 'Faith of Our Fathers.'

How family values fueled For King & Country's rise to fame

Joel and Luke joined forces to establish the band 'For King & Country' in 2007. Their shared passion for music and deep-rooted family values the foundation for their musical journey.

In 2008, Joel and Luke released their first EP, 'A Tale of Two Towns' in the comfort of their parents' home, which served as a creative sanctuary for the brothers.

Over the years, despite their rising success, the brothers faced various hardships. In 2011, the duo, now known as For King & Country, returned to the studio to record what would become their first three singles: 'Busted Heart,' 'Proof of Your Love,' and 'Middle of Your Heart.'

In 2013, Joel also embarked on his acting career, taking on the role of King Xerxes in 'The Book of Esther' and portraying Jake Reeson in 'Like a Country Song.'

One of his most notable roles came in 2016 when he was cast in the leading role of James Stevens in the film 'Priceless.'

Joel has embarked on an intriguing new chapter in his acting career, as he is set to portray his father, David, in the upcoming film 'Unsung Heroes.'

Reflecting on Your Own Twisted Life Path

In most cases, we stray from the expected route anyway....

Posted August 28, 2019

Pixabay

Now that you are in midlife or beyond, what do you see when you look back on the path you’ve traveled? Did your early plans pan out— career goals , marriage , kids, travel, income? In most cases, we stray from the expected route, and sometimes we end up in a better place than we could have ever imagined.

Daily Om’s Madisyn Taylor, in her piece "There Are No Straight Lines in Nature or Life," says,

“If you trek into the wilderness and look around with a careful gaze, you'll see that the trees, flowers, and even the rocks have a tendency to flow. There is the curve of the branch that leads to the blossom, the smooth dip in a rock formation, the gnarled knot in a tree trunk, and the forking of shoots. As nature is overflowing with curves, corners, knots, and unexpected directions, so are our lives filled with unpredictable twists and turns. While you may find yourself briefly on a straight path, there is sure to be a sudden change in route up ahead. The journey of life doesn't necessarily always bring you closer to your goals. In fact, sometimes you may find yourself backtracking or meandering off in a wholly new direction. Because there is no way to predict the outcome of your journey (just as there is no way to predict the way a new bud will form), simply living is in itself the path to wisdom .”

When I was in my teens, I pictured magical things happening to me. I would finish high school (not my happy place), major in French in college, and become an interpreter for the United Nations. My dad painted this picture of a life of great meaning, using language to build bridges and have a rewarding career (although it was clear that it was partly to put myself in a position to meet an educated man).

Trouble is, even though my pronunciation of French was admirable for an American, my fluency was not. There were no native French speakers in the Midwest, where I went to college. Even a summer abroad in Paris was not enough to get me to rapid-fire conversational levels, because I spent my day with other language students and not with French people.

While I had an unforgettable college experience, reality hit when it was time for me to begin “adulting.” For years, I had sworn I would head back to my beloved San Francisco, and just two weeks after graduation, my parents gave in and drove me back there, pretty much to make sure that I found a job and a place to stay and then wave goodbye. I think they were tired of my whining.

Of course, the job I took had nothing to do with what I had studied in school and the place I found to live was merely a room in an elderly immigrant lady’s house not far from where I had been a child. But I was thrilled to be where I felt I belonged at last. It’s amazing how young people can lead fairly Spartan existences as long as they feel a sense of adventure happening to them.

From there, my life began taking its twisted path to great experiences and a few crappy ones thrown in for good measure. From secretarial work to hotel front desk work to working in the airline industry, everything I did felt like a higher step to something that would fulfill me even more.

In the course of this road I traveled, I met interesting people, famous people, sold high-ticket items and even trained people to have exciting careers. I changed my look over and over again, I traveled a lot, and by my late 20s, I pretty much made a “business decision” to marry and have kids. By age 30, I had taken the plunge, and by age 32, my amazing daughter was born.

I have had many careers since then, gone through a divorce after giving the marriage a good, long shelf life, and ended up very shortly thereafter with someone who had been lingering in the shadows a long time. Unbeknownst to me, he was to be my soul mate, restoring my faith in love, romance, and relationships. But I am not certain I would be able to appreciate a man like him until after I had been through my first very challenging marriage.

So when you reflect back on your life, are you able to connect the dots? Instead of lamenting the things you didn’t do, is it possible to be grateful for the path you eventually took, even if it looked nothing like what you had in mind in your 20s?

I do this reflective exercise on a regular basis. For instance, if it weren’t for my move back to San Francisco, I would not have known the joys of being totally on my own at age 20. I would never have enjoyed the excitement and free travel opportunities working for an airline brought to me. And had I not worked for that airline, I would not have met the man who would father my only child and delight in the rewards of motherhood.

journey of my life

I look back on my careers, my friends from all those careers, my ethnocentric involvement, my health challenges, and I have to think that—in the long run—I made some pretty good choices, even though some seemed unwise at the time. My ability to study life from up on a cloud has also helped me become a writer who is always grateful that somewhere, someone’s life may be touched by what I have to say.

ZenHabits’ Leo Babauta points out the beauty of reflection in his article , "5 Powerful Reasons to Make Reflection a Daily Habit, and How to Do It." First, it enables you to learn from your mistakes. “If we don’t reflect on our mistakes, we are doomed to repeat them,” says Barbauta. “And that’s not very smart. However, if we reflect on those mistakes, figure out what went wrong, see how we can prevent them in the future, we can use our mistakes to get better. Mistakes, then, are a valuable learning tool, instead of something to feel embarrassed or upset about. Reflection is an important way to do that.”

Next, reflection can offer you some great ideas. It can help you get the big picture as if you are suspended in the air, looking down at your present circumstances. “I reflect on things that I’m doing or that are going on in my life," he says. “If things aren’t going well, I learn stuff I can share with others. If I reflect on something that’s a success for me, I think about how I got that success, and share that too. I’ve had hundreds of great ideas this year from reflection.”

The next advantage of self-reflection is one that has brought me some exciting times in life. There is a reward in itself from helping others. Because of my own struggles and eventual problem-solving skills, I have been able to help others realize they are not alone.

Babauta talks about how simple little tips can change people’s lives. It can inspire someone to change course, to buck up and see more in themselves, and to give them the inspiration to move to higher planes of understanding—sometimes just by saying something that hits them in the gut.

Recently I have been participating in a women’s entrepreneurial networking platform called Girlboss , where mostly younger women talk about risk-taking , learning something new, offering advice to and supporting other women in their quests to live out their career passions. Often, a young woman just out of college is asking others how it’s possible to find her dream job after receiving a degree in a certain field.

While other millennial women respond with encouraging words, I am the seasoned member who will tell her to work any job she can find, learn to live her daily life first, supporting herself and her future dreams , and then she will be in a position to be open to wherever her efforts and skills take her. Sometimes that means in an entirely different field than the one she had in mind. This life journey is difficult to explain to the young, but I guess someone has to do it.

Please understand that all of this is also fodder for how I live my life now. For every new challenge, I am interested in what comes next. With every new person I meet, I have more reason to ask questions and find out more about them. Hey, I'm just getting started.

I can easily become overwhelmed by life if I don’t step back and practice the art of reflection. A dose of the daily news can ruin my day. But a visit to Facebook , where hundreds of people I have known since my youth are gathered on my feed— childhood friends, classmates, travel buddies, former co-workers, and business acquaintances—can quickly soften those disturbing thoughts. Why? Because I know we are all in this together.

And because we all have the power to touch one another’s lives with our stories, our challenges, and even our sense of humor . That, in itself, has made life worth living.

Tammy Slaton Opens Up About Her Weight Loss: All About The '1,000-Lb. Sisters' Star's Health Journey

The Kentucky native has lost over 400 pounds.

preview for 8 Weight Loss Myths Debunked

Tammy Slaton is getting out there and living her life. The 1,000-Lb. Sisters star just dropped some photos of herself hanging next to a pool with a friend while wearing a bathing suit.

People cheered her on in the caption. “Look at you, girl! That is a JOURNEY 🔥,” one said. “Holy wow! The transformation is incredible! So happy to see how far you have come,” another wrote.

Tammy also looked noticeably slimmed down in a recent series of new photos shared on Instagram . (The Kentucky native had previously documented her journey to undergo bariatric surgery on her TLC series.)

But the 37-year-old is also getting praise for sharing a rare unfiltered photo of herself on Instagram . In it, Tammy and Haley can be seen on a FaceTime call, with Tammy sporting a new pixie cut. “Stay tuned,” they wrote in a joint caption.

Tammy tends to use fun filters in her Instagram photos, making this a big step for her. "This is the nicest picture of you yet!!!" one person wrote. “You loook absolutely gorgeous Tammy!!!!!!” another said.

Tammy has made a lot of lifestyle changes to get to this point. Here’s what she’s shared about her journey so far.

Tammy has lost over 400 pounds on her journey.

Since her series premiered in 2020, Tammy has lost over half her prior body weight. She has dropped 440 pounds, which is down from her highest weight of 725 pounds, she told People last year.

After making some major changes to her diet, undergoing bariatric surgery in July 2022, and subsequently checking into a 14-month weight loss rehab, she currently weighs 285 pounds, per People .

In a since-deleted comment, Tammy shared that she now practices eating "proteins, low carbs, no sugars, no pop, portion control," according to Us Weekly .

Tammy regularly shows off her progress on social media, including a recent TikTok that breaks down how far she’s come.

She’s now able to walk without assistance.

At the start of her journey, Tammy had difficulty with mobility and needed to rely on a walker or wheelchair. But now, she can move around without aid, and no longer needs an oxygen tube to breathe.

“One of the big changes that I have gone through this past year is probably small to most people, but for me it was huge,” Tammy told People . “Just being able to walk without a walker or be pushed in a wheelchair, and no oxygen. I don't even sleep with it at night anymore.”

Tammy also said that she’s now able to sit in the front seat of a regular vehicle and can fasten the seat belt without using an extender. “What seems minor to some people is giant for me,” she said.

Tammy can now fly on an airplane.

She shared in a January episode of 1,000-Lb Sisters that she took an extra precaution for a flight to make sure she would be able to board the plane by buying two side-by-side seats. But when she sat down, she learned that she could fit into one seat.

Tammy said that she was “comfortable” in her seat and that she was able to buckle her seatbelt. "I was kind of surprised that I didn't need both seats that we paid for,” she said.

She’s grateful for her new “quality of life.”

Tammy is happy with how her life has changed. “My quality of life has changed so much,” she said in a February TikTok . “Before I went to rehab, I was bitter, unhappy, very super suicidal, depressed, and just mean. Everybody hated me…and they still do…I had this I don’t care attitude back then. I still do, but it’s not as bad. I’m working on myself still.”

Tammy also said that she’s able to appreciate life more, and is now treating herself and others better in the process. “I have personally seen a lot of growth in how I treat people and my family,” she said. “Just my attitude and how happier I seem. I smile a lot more.”

Tammy also revealed in that video that she was able to enjoy a recent trip to Disney World. “I actually got on rides, and I rode in a hot air balloon,” she said. “I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this two years ago…I’m just giving myself a pat on the back for achieving something. Getting the weight off and living."

She plans on getting skin removal surgery, but doesn’t have a timeline.

In another video from the same month, Tammy shared that she’s planning to get skin removal surgery at some point, but doesn't know exactly when. “My ‘chin flap’ is not a chin flap. It’s literally excess skin and yes, it will go away when I get skin removal surgery,” she said in a February TikTok . “I cannot answer, before anybody asks, when I’m getting skin removal because I don’t know.”

She encourages kindness online.

In that same video, Tammy called out people for making mean comments about her. “Can’t I live my life without y’all judging me, making fun of me for every little freaking thing?” she said. “I can’t duet a friend without y’all thinking I’m trying to bang them. I can’t be happy and smile without y’all judging me because my teeth are missing.”

Tammy then encouraged people to be kinder to others. “You don’t understand what people are going through,” she said. “I’m very insecure. I hide it because I don’t want people to think I’m weak and I truly am weak. And calling me a turkey or talking about my face and my teeth it bothers me. I’m human.”

She added, “I just want people to realize that hating is not okay.”
