The Best Kiteboarding Spots in the USA (With a Few Surprises)

Table of contents.

Each of the ten kiteboarding locations on this list has a special appeal — from the wind to the surf conditions to the culture — they couldn’t be more different from one another. There’s something for every skill level and discipline of kiteboarder, whether you are a complete beginner looking to get into the sport, an advanced wave kiter, or a flatwater freestyle addict. The US’s extensive shoreline — Gulf, Atlantic, and Pacific — has it all, you just have to decide where to ride first.

kitesurf road trip

Chasing the wind and discovering hot spots for  best kitesurfing in the world has been my passion for the past eight years — ever since I learned how to kiteboard, I’ve been hooked. I’ve taken my kiteboard all over the world , adding spot after spot to my ever-growing bucket list. No matter your skill level or kiteboarding objectives, there’s a destination on this list for you (and a few places you might not expect to see). Here’s our list of the best places to kiteboard in the USA:

Oahu kiteboarding

Kiteboarding on Kailua Beach — Oahu’s most popular spot for wind chasers

Kailua is an ideal location for all kiteboarding levels

Kailua, on the green, east side of Oahu, is situated on its namesake bay with white, sandy beaches and turquoise water — often showing up on “best beaches worldwide” lists. It is here where all kiteboarders can find ideal conditions.

Thanks to the offshore reef, Kailua is protected from the waves and offers flat or choppy water during the summer months, including some wind swell. The best wind conditions are in the morning and evening.

How to avoid the crowds

Keep in mind that Kailua Bay gets crowded with kiteboarders, swimmers, and sunbathers, and the beach becomes smaller with high tide — make sure you launch and land quickly. It’s best to kite away from the crowds, in the spacious bay, and not get too close to shore or jump close to the beach. One tip for kiting here: you can set up and pack your kite gear on the big grassy area at the north end of the bay.

Kiters on Oahu enjoy consistent wind and beautiful scenery. Chase big waves on the North Shore, or head to Kailua Bay for flat water and waves. You might even find yourself riding among sea turtles.

2. Cape Hatteras

Cape Hatteras is a thin, long stretch of islands connected by human-made bridges along NC-12 that bend away and back from the mainland. This island group creates a unique playground for kiteboarders. There are all kinds of conditions, from quality waves to perfect butterflat spots. With warm summers, scenic sand dunes, and vibes as laid back as the kitesurfing in La Ventana, Mexico , it’s the perfect beach-holiday getaway for kiteboarders and non-kiteboarders alike.

Cape Hatteras kiteboarding

Seventy miles of beaches with flat water shoreline

Matt Nuzzo, the Co-founder of REAL Watersports , says, “Cape Hatteras has epic winds year-round. World-class waves. Seventy miles of pristine beaches and flat water shoreline. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, both over the water. Not many destinations in the world can match this.”

Cape Hatteras has spots for all skill levels

There are a variety of places for waves on the Atlantic side. On the west side, in Pamlico Sound, are flat, waist-deep spots, ideal for beginners. Because Cape Hatteras is so far away from the mainland, plan on steady, stable wind in any direction. Small islands within the sound create slickwater conditions downwind.

A launching point for first-timers to the area

If you are visiting Cape Hatteras for the first time, the Kite Point (SW or NW wind), south of Avon, is a great starting point. It has flat to choppy waist-deep water, which makes it ideal for beginners.

Frisco (SW or NE wind), southwest of Buxton, has several kite spots on the sound side and surfside, so if you can’t decide what conditions you want, this spot has enough variety to keep you happy.

You can find a great overview of all the kite spots in the area here and a more detailed map with descriptions here .

Downwinder options for advanced kiters

If you are into downwinders (for independent riders only), you’ll find plenty of great alternatives. Make sure to get a downwinder guide from one of the kite shops and be sure to check out this helpful article.   Like the kiteboarding in Squamish , Cape Hatteras is famous for its flatwater freestyle opportunities, so if you’re chasing the butterflat, go for the Planet of the Apes downwinder, and you can find a few slicks in the outlets and channels.

Hatteras island is the kiteboarding mecca! With shallow waters on the sound side to learn and progress quickly, flat water for freestyle and sliders, and 1/4 away on the other side of the island, waves for epic kiteboarding!

3. South Padre Island

South Padre Island is the longest barrier island in the world and is located on the southern coast of Texas, near the Mexican border. Similar to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, you can find flatwater on one side and waves on the other. The small beach city offers a huge variety of outdoor and no-wind activities which are also family-friendly, making it a good vacation destination for non-kiteboarders too.

South Padre Island kiteboarding

Kiteboarding conditions depend on the time of year

Depending on the time of the year, expect different conditions. March through July will provide the most windy days with an average of 16 knots. October through December brings stronger wind, averaging 20 knots. These are the ideal months for wave kiters. On hot summer days, you might be able to sneak in some light-wind sessions. Generally speaking, be prepared for lighter wind and bring bigger kites to make the most out of your stay.

The South and North Flats

South Flats is the kite spot closest to town, and it has good flat, ankle to waist-deep water, serving up ideal conditions for kiteboard beginners and those wanting to practice new tricks. This area is suitable with almost any wind direction. The North Flats have steadier wind and perfect flatwater, but you’ll need to pay a membership fee to gain access. You can do so at Pro Kite South Padre (cost $20 per month; $30 per year).

The Gulf side is for wave kiters and downwinders

Wave kiters have 15 miles of coastline to play in on the Gulf side with typically side-onshore wind. Like the kiteboarding in Cape Verde , this makes it ideal for intermediate riders looking to expand their skillset. Boca Chica has the cleanest waves, so it’s worth making the hour-long drive. Experienced wave kiteboarders will enjoy the waves in Isla Blanca Park, aka “The Jetty,” which is also a good spot for foiling on lightwind days because of small waves. It’s a busy tourist beach, so be mindful of beachgoers and swimmers.

This map of kite spots will give you directions on how to get to the various locations.

South Padre Island is a kiteboarding beginner’s paradise; it’s like the kiddy pool for kiteboarding. Knee-deep flat water for all ages, steady side/on wind, and warm weather and water.

4. Columbia River Gorge

On a daily basis I see my friends’ Instagram stories and photos featuring an incredible variety of outdoor activities at Hood River —  specifically the Gorge. Adventure seekers love that you can mountain bike or hike on trails in the morning and kiteboard in the afternoon. If you happen to visit during the winter, you can even ski or snowboard on nearby Mt. Hood.

Columbia River Gorge kiteboarding

Hood River is a world renowned kiteboarding destination

The Hood River is an international kiteboarding hotspot and home to many American pro-riders in summer (Colleen Carrol, Brandon Scheid, Craig Cunningham). Even kite brands have their American headquarters here. The whole vibe is filled with stoke; locals and visitors love the outdoorsy lifestyle and get the most that nature has to offer day in and day out. The main spot for kiteboarding tours is the Hood River Event Site. It’s here where you will launch your kite from the sandbank during summer. Independent kiteboarders and those who want to work on skill progression can kite upwind of the sandbar, where it’s choppier. Downwind of the sandbar is where you’ll find kite lessons — the water is more shallow and flat. Be aware of the rotation of the riders below the sandbar.

A distinctive Hood River feature

Something unique to the area is that the river current flows opposite to the wind direction; this means on lighter wind days it’ll be easier to stay upwind. While the Hood River is suitable for all types of kiteboarding — from foiling to freeride, freestyle and big air — wakestyle kiters will love the permanent slider park.

Hood River is an epic kiteboarding destination not only because of its consistent winds... but for the wealth of other activities available: pristine hiking, world class mountain biking and kayaking, ski and snowboarding, great food, wine and beer.

5. San Francisco

Like Miami, San Francisco combines one of the world’s most popular travel destinations with kiteboarding. Many kiteboarders, myself included, have put kiting under the Golden Gate Bridge at the top their kiteboard bucket lists. I’ve only been to San Francisco in January, while on a road trip, and wasn’t lucky with the wind, but it’s not the last time I plan on visiting.

Challenging conditions and gusty winds

Don’t think that because the kite spots are so scenic that they’re safe. Kiting here is challenging, so unless you’re kiteboarding with a kite school, the area is best for advanced riders.

As a rule, it’s always a good idea to talk to a local kiteboarder before heading into the water to learn about potential dangers at a particular spot. During springtime, the wind is best in the late morning through the early afternoon — it becomes too gusty later in the day. In the summer, look out for some great NW winds.

San Francisco kiteboarding

The best San Francisco kiting spots

Within San Francisco proper, head to Ocean Beach . It’s as long and sandy as the best kitesurfing beaches in Cabarete , with lots of space for launching and landing. It also has a big swell, nice ramps to jump off from, and strong currents, which is why it’s only recommended for advanced kiteboarders.

Crissy Field , the picturesque and most famous spot at the Golden Gate Bridge, is for advanced riders only due to strong tidal currents, ship traffic, and shifty, often gusty, wind.

South of San Francisco near San Mateo is 3rd Avenue/Baywinds Park , one of the windiest and most popular kite spots in the Bay.

Intermediate to advanced wave riders will love Waddell Creek , which is further south along US 1, just north of Swanton.

Sherman Island is a must-visit during the summer if you’re up for a road trip — just about 2 hours northeast from San Francisco. It’s a perfect location for “kite-eat-sleep-repeat.”

The San Francisco Bay Area is definitely one of the top kiteboarding destinations in the world for sure. We have good consistent wind for most of the year — especially April-October — and the most unique variety of kiteboarding beaches.

Depending on the spot, choppy with waves

Bay Area Kiteboarding

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is a 15-minute ride from downtown San Francisco. A rental car is recommended if you want to check out the variety of kite spots and explore more of the city.

6. Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi is your go-to spot if you want to kite as many days as possible during your vacation. It has the highest average wind speed in the continental US, and it’s famous for its wind consistency. Wind junkies will also love how uncrowded it is. If you find six kiteboarders in one spot, that’s as crowded as it will get while you’re in Corpus Christi — that’s how many kiteboarding spots there are. Your biggest issue will be trying to decide where to kite first.

Expect wind every day

During the windiest season, from March through August, consistent thermal S and SE wind arrives in the early afternoon and keeps picking up until evening. In the low wind season, September through March, there are still a lot of kiteable days; the cold fronts bring some stronger N wind, which allows you to visit other spots than you would in the summer.

The best kiteboarding spots in Corpus Christie

Wildcat Park, Portland , is the most popular and windiest spot. It has flat to choppy waist-deep water, which makes it ideal for learning how to kiteboard (beginners should wear booties because of oyster shells).

Grassy Point, Corpus Christi is close to another location, Brozil, which is only accessible by kite for independent kiteboarders. Grassy Point has butterflat water because of its small channels. Enter this spot by driving through the marina and paying a small fee.

Oso Bay, Corpus Christi is a big flatwater spot protected by a long sandbar with a sandy, muddy bottom. Boots are recommended because of shells.

Join the locals for this Friday summer tradition

If you are visiting during the summer, join the locals on a Bay Crossing every Friday. Joey Stephenson from Kiteboarding.com says, “We meet at Wildcat Park in Portland and cross the bay to go to Fajitaville on North Beach in Corpus Christi. There we land on the beach, have a drink, and then return to Portland. People have come here from as far as Wisconsin just to do a Bay Crossing with us.”

For more detailed information on all the kite spots, take a look at these lists from 361kite: Mainland Spots Around Corpus Christi , Back Bay/North Padre Island and Gulf Side/North Padre island .

Corpus Christi is a great location for kiteboarding for several reasons. First we are the windiest location in the US based on average wind speed, and second, we have a large variety of riding spots that suits many riding styles.

7. Key West

If you look at a map, you’ll see a small chain of connected islands that make Key West a watersports paradise. Surrounded by ocean on all sides, kiteboarders flock to the area for its sandy beaches and consistent wind.

Key West kiteboarding

The best place to practice new tricks

The main spot in Key West is Smathers Beach , which has a small sandy beach for setup. It can get pretty crowded during the peak season and is only for intermediate to advanced kiteboarders. A big shallow area with flat water makes it ideal for practicing new tricks, and the white beach and palm trees create a stunning backdrop. Be aware of sunbathers and swimmers and be sure to launch and land far away from power lines.

The best spot to learn and progress

The Flats in Key West are accessible by boat, and it receives wind from all directions. You can launch right from the water because there are no obstacles, just sand and turtle grass — which is ideal for soft landings if you crash. The Flats is a great spot not only for people who want to learn to kiteboard, but also for progressing your riding, learning new tricks, and getting into unhooked tricks.

It’s a great idea to go for a kiteboard-road trip when you visit. I plan to explore as many areas as possible once I make my way there. For more kiteboarding spots around the Florida Keys area, check out this South Florida Guide from KiteboardingFlorida.com.

Key West offers world-class kiteboarding and kitefoiling, accessible only by boat. Just 6 miles away from the island, you'll find miles and miles of shallow, super flat, smooth, clear water. Epic sessions in an epic location.

8. The Jersey Shore

While I’ve heard good friends talk a lot about the locations mentioned in this guide, New Jersey has never been on my radar, and I was surprised to hear about its excellent kite conditions. New Jersey’s beaches might not be the prettiest in the world, but escaping big city life and having such great flatwater spots so close to NYC is truly exceptional!

Sandy Hook is home to exceptional flatwater conditions

Sandy Hook is New Jersey’s most popular spot and the closest to New York City. As its name implies, it’s a peninsular sandy hook with the Raritan and Sandy Hook Bays to its west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. On the Raritan side, there is excellent flatwater sheltered by the sand bar, offering calmer conditions — which makes it perfect for beginners and for practicing new tricks. The best wind direction for this spot is N, but S also works. Launch from Parking Spot B.

A spot for beginners

Most places offer flat to choppy conditions. Kite Island, for instance, has a big bay with waist-deep flat water, making it ideal for learning to kiteboard and practicing unhooked moves. It’s only accessed by boat, and the closest harbor is Waretown.

Other great New Jersey kiting options

Other kite spots to check out around New Jersey are Long Beach Island, Ocean Side (chop, waves), 25th Street Long Beach Island (flatwater, chop), Seaside Park (choppy), or Lakes Bay (flat, choppy). You can find an excellent overview of all kite launches around New Jersey here . The Sunshine State is a popular winter destination for kiteboarders and surfers from across the globe. Miami’s mix of city vibes and nearby kiteboarding opportunities make it a solid choice for a kite holiday. Because Miami’s beaches quickly fill with sunbathers and there are lots of restrictions and entry requirements on kiteboarding, your best bet is to check out the spots surrounding the city. Crandon Park, Miami Flats, and Matheson Hammock Park — all short drive away — are three top choices of local riders.

Crandon Park is where it’s at

Miami’s most popular kite spot is the watersport concession area Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. The area is carefully managed: to kiteboard, you must have IKO / PASA Level III certification, wear a helmet, register, and pay an entrance fee. You can learn about the rules here . You’ll be rewarded with some clear, flat to choppy waist-deep water and a huge area to play in. At low tide, you even get butterfat conditions, and if you venture a bit offshore, you’ll have some small waves to play in.

Matheson Hammock Park and Miami Flats

Matheson Hammock Park is the second major kiteboarding area in Miami, and, just like Crandon Park, it has the same tight rules and entry requirements. For butterfat water, head to Miami Flats, which works in all wind directions and is accessible by boat.

Miami kiteboarding

Miami has a tight morning and evening kiteboarding window

kiteboarding in Miami proper can be tricky, especially because kiting has repeatedly been banned, and rules regarding launching/landing are complicated. Because of this, the area is only recommended for advanced, independent kiteboarders. For now, kiting is tolerated and usually only possible when the beach isn’t filled with sunbathers or swimmers — so basically very early in the morning or after everyone leaves.

Popular spots with deep, choppy water are between 23rd and 29th streets, 45th to 60th street, and north of 87th street. All of them offer only a small space for launching and landing. Stay away from the lifeguard towers (200 yards minimum) and areas supervised by lifeguards. Also, it’s best to keep a safe distance from swimmers and beachgoers.

Miami is incredibly special as a kiteboarding destination because we have warm weather year-round and nowhere else in the world can you kiteboard all day at some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, but then also enjoy endless choices for world-class dining, culture and nightlife.

The Galveston Island Beachfront

Thanks to a 5-mile-long dike, the water stays flat even with stronger winds and is protected from waves. There is a large grassy area to launch and land (and pack your kite sand-free). For wave riders, the Galveston Island beachfront from West Beach to the San Louis Pass offers an ideal kiteboarding spot with a sandy bottom. You can find directions to both locations here .

KITESURF TRIP PLANNER

Based on wind seasons, when is your kite trip, sainte-anne spot guide – january kitesurfing in guadeloupe, 2023 annual kitesurf summary, bamboo watches by gloriousdays, 2022 north navigator kiteboarding bar review (and benefits of short bars), dakhla, morocco – kitesurf spot guide for march, windy regions this month.

Welcome to Global Kite Spots. One of the largest, constantly updated and maintained online resources for kitesurfers planning their next kitesurf holiday.

If you’re a kiteboarder and you’re planning your next kitesurf trip, you’ve come to the right place. Global Kite Spots lists kitesurfing destinations by month, not by region. Most of us don’t plan our holiday around a kitesurf spot – We plan it around the time we’re free to go.

So why are most kitesurf spot guides starting with the destinations? It seems that they are aimed toward kiteboarders who have a specific kite spot in mind. Of course you can do the same here. If you know where your next kitesurf destination will be, and want to learn more about this region, go to the Regions section and you have over 100 destinations listed alphabetically, from ABC-islands to Vietnam.

But more commonly the question is ‘Where is it windy in the world in January?’ Or July? Or November? Simply click on the month you’re interested in, and a comprehensive list of kitesurf regions are listed, based on peak, early or late season – Possible, thanks to seasonal prevailing winds and reliable thermals.

As always, wind is not guaranteed, even in the most reliable places like North Brazil, South Africa’s Cape Town or Spain’s Tarifa. But having said that, Global Kite Spot’s wind charts are based on both empirical and anecdotal data, and is constantly refined when new data is discovered. We are here to inspire and educate, so that you can find a windy beach for your next kitesurf adventure.

Kitesurf Trip Travel Essentials

But here’s the catch – although incredibly rewarding, traveling with your kite gear can be tricky if you don’t get the logistics right. If you’ve ever wondered how to fit all your gear into one bag, but still have room for your clothes and more, then keep reading. We’ve put together this helpful guide that covers everything you need to know about packing, transporting, and protecting your gear while you’re on the road – so that you can have a safe and enjoyable time, every time. Buying vs renting gear Before we get started, you may be wondering at what point it’s worth renting gear at your destination instead of bringing yours with you. The answer depends on how much you’re planning on kitesurfing during your trip. But as soon as it’s more than just one session – it’s worth bringing your own, especially if you consider the long term. At rental shops, you’ll easily be paying something like 80 euros every single day for gear that’s in bad shape. If you’re hitting the waves regularly, those rental fees add up fast. Before you know it, you’ve spent more than what it would’ve cost to just buy and bring your own stuff. Plus, when you own your gear, you’re riding with gear you trust and know well. So, maybe grab a calculator and crunch those numbers. Investing in and bringing your own gear could be the smarter move.

If you’re hitting the waves regularly, those rental fees add up fast. Before you know it, you’ve spent more than what it would’ve cost to just buy and bring your own stuff.

Consider your destination So you’ve picked the perfect spot for your next kitesurfing trip. Packing is now a game of matching the wind to your sails – literally. Before you zip up your bags, think about the wind conditions and the season of your chosen destination. Are you heading to a breezy beach with steady winds or a spot known for its challenging gusts? Each place calls for different types of gear. And let’s not forget the spot’s difficulty level – are you in for a relaxed ride or an adrenaline-pumping challenge? This choice will shape what you pack. The right boardbag, the right airline Efficient packing for a kitesurfing trip starts with a high-quality boardbag . First up, invest in a boardbag with wheels . This isn’t just about convenience; it’s about saving your back during those long airport hauls. Before you start packing, double-check the weight and size limits of your airline – you don’t want any nasty surprises at the check-in desk. A pro tip here: many airlines offer discounts for traveling with golf gear, so consider using the Mystic golf bag to sneak in some of your gear. Otherwise just ensure you pick one that’s just the right size for your kiteboard, kites, and other essentials. Make sure it fits within your airline’s baggage policy to avoid any excess baggage fees.

Kite Gear Checklist Below is an essential list of the gear we bring on every trip. Ensure you always check your equipment in advance for any wear and tear that will indicate whether or not it needs to be replaced. There’s nothing worse than showing up with damaged gear at your dream spot. - Kite gear: 2-3 kites, bar, 2 boards, harness, repair kit, safety leash, helmet, impact vest, optional: pump - Clothing: wetsuit or shorty, 2 rashguards or lycras, bikini or boardshorts, hat, sunglasses, poncho or towel, optional: water shoes - Protection: sunscreen (zinc cream), first aid kit - Accessories: water bottle, dry bag, massage gun or foam roller Get packing When packing your board and kite, give them the care they deserve. Wrap your board and kite carefully to protect them from the jostles and bumps of travel. Here’s a handy trick: leave your kite bags at home. Not only will you save a few kilos, but when it’s time to head to the beach, just wrap your kite in your harness. Also, remove any loose or sharp items from your kiteboard, like fins, screws, or bindings. Store them in a separate pouch or ziplock bag, and label them clearly – this helps you stay organized and protects your gear. For an extra layer of safety, wrap your kiteboard and bar in bubble wrap, towels, or clothes. This isn’t just padding; it’s protection against scratches and dents. Place them on top of the kites in your kitebag, and use any empty spaces to tuck in soft items like wetsuits, harnesses, or more clothes. And here’s a little secret: you can probably leave your pump at home. Most spots will have one available on the beach. Still got some spare room in your boardbag? Keep filling it up with your clothes and other essentials. You might find that you don’t even need additional travel luggage. And don’t forget to add a tag to your travel bag with your name, address, phone number, and email – just in case it decides to go on its own little adventure.

Get insured Securing solid travel insurance is a must for any kitesurfing trip, and it’s not just about covering the basics. Make sure it includes coverage specifically for kitesurfing activities – you don’t want any nasty surprises if you take a tumble or your kite decides to go rogue. Medical expenses are a no-brainer; after all, better safe than sorry. But also think about your precious gear. Look for a policy that covers damage or loss, because let’s face it, kitesurfing gear isn’t cheap, and the ocean can be unforgiving. If you’re on the hunt for a reliable insurance option, Club North has got your back. They cover you on the water in all conditions and offer exclusive access and experiences for you to make the most out of your rides.

Final travel tips Diving into a new kitesurfing destination is also about embracing the local culture and environment. A great way to start is by learning some of the local language. Even a few basic words and phrases can go a long way. Knowing how to say hello, thank you, and ask for directions not only shows respect but can also enrich your travel experience. You’ll connect better with locals, and who knows, you might even pick up some insider tips about hidden kitesurfing gems! Respecting local rules and the environment is also key. Every kitesurfing spot has its own set of guidelines and etiquette. Make sure you’re familiar with them to keep both yourself and others safe. Be mindful of the environment – don’t litter, and treat the natural surroundings with the care they deserve. Also, take time to understand the specific conditions of the spot you’re visiting. This includes local tides, reef locations, potential dangerous marine life, and any specific hazards like sharp shells or tricky off-shore winds. Being informed is key to a safe and enjoyable experience.

Knowing how to say hello, thank you, and ask for directions not only shows respect but can also enrich your travel experience.

And of course, while you’re out there having the time of your life, safety should always come first. Enjoy every moment, but always wear a helmet and an impact vest. These are not just accessories; they’re essentials that could make a huge difference in an unexpected situation. For those moments of downtime during your travels, or if you’re just looking to get pumped up for your next session, check out Red Bull Chapter One: The Kiteboard Legacy Begins . It’s the perfect way to fuel your stoke for the adventures ahead. Safe travels!

Kitesurf Spots Brazil: roadtrip from Cumbuco to Atins

' src=

I’ve already been multiple times to Northern Brazil but always wanted to do a road trip seeing all the spots, starting from Fortaleza going all the way up to Atins.

We didn’t make all of the spots but since I researched them all I wanted to share everything I found so you can pick the spots that sound best to you.

Quick tips for your Kitesurf Brazil road trip

If you’re considering renting your own car and exploring various spots, here are some tips on car rental and on planning your route:

  • Tips on car rental: If you rent your own car rent something with a higher clearance if you are planning to drive a lot. Don’t drive when it’s dark there are a lot of holes in the road, people biking or walking at the side of the street, cows/goats/donkeys chilling on the road or passing etc.
  • Where to rent your car: I always book my rental car via billiger mietwagen  (German Site, you can cancel up to 24 hrs before) or Rental Cars (International Site).
  • How to plan your road trip: Don’t change locations every day or other day unless you really want an adventure and don’t want to come home rested but having seen everything. We are happy we did because I just wanted to explore all spots once to get my own picture of it. If you want to have a more relaxing holiday though explore a few spots and then stay in one spot for a week. We found it more relaxing when we stayed at a spot for 3 nights rather than just 1 or 2 nights.
  • Accommodation/where to stay: For accommodation we basically booked very spontaneous and just checked booking on the same day, we usually found pretty good offers since hotels want to fill out empty spaces. That being said we went at the beginning of October which is not the classical “kitesurfer high season” for Brazil which usually is November and December so I don’t know if it would be the same situation then.
  • Water Conditions: most spots in Brazil have choppy water with some flat water lagoons in-between. When I speak of waves it is not glassy clean waves like you have in Mauritius 😉 It’s more beginner/medium level to mess around but you do see a lot of wave kiters along the Brazilian coast!
  • Wind forecast: in Northern Brazil you usually do not need to check the wind forecast because it is windy every day! The “lower” and closer you are to Fortaleza the lighter the wind (and the season ends a bit earlier), the further up you go North the stronger the wind gets and the season is longer, peaking at Jericoacoara with the strongest wind.
  • Wind strength: for Cumbuco and Taiba you will need bigger kites (in Taiba we saw anything from 7m to 12m depending on the day), the further up North you go the stronger it gets. I was on my 9m Dice most days, in Jericoacoara and Prea I was on my 7m Dice. The wind picks up slowly in the mornings, is usually stable by 11/12 and gets stronger throughout the day. The last hour of sunlight it gets a little bit weaker again but still fully kiteable for an awesome sunset session.

1. Kitesurf Spot Cumbuco & Cauipe lagoon, Ceará, Brazil

We skipped that one but from what I researched and heard it is one of the cheaper option to stay in Brazil, it’s a short drive from Fortaleza (which also makes it a bit more dangerous) and has a younger vibe with restaurants and some bars.

If you want to spot some pros training head to Cauipe lagoon.

Generally, the wind is lighter close to Fortaleza (which makes it ideal for freestyle) and gets stronger the more you go North.

2. Kitesurf Spot Taiba ocean and lagoon, Ceará, Brazil

Kitesurf Spots Brazil: Taiba lagoon

Quick facts on kitesurfing in Taiba

+ short drive from Fortaleza + lagoon (flat) and ocean (choppy & waves) + amazing pizza

– no accommodation right at the lagoon (but a very short drive away) – the town itself is not so special – lighter wind than more north (which at the same time makes it ideal for freestyle)

Quick facts on kitesurfing in Ilha do Guajiru

+  from bed to board (lots of accommodation right at the spot) +  spot is evolving, nice restaurants popping up, good vibe

– tide dependent (but you can kite more downwind even with low tide or on the ocean if you want to cross) – there are parts with shells so be careful with low tide – it’s quite a „touristy“ place (doesn’t feel Brazilian but I liked it anyway, its only kitesurfers in this town) – wind can be gusty (mostly at the upper part of the lagoon in the middle, move a bit around to find the best spot)

Kitesurf Spots Brazil: Ilha do Guajiru close to Itarema, Ceara

Most important info on kitesurfing in Ilha do Guajiru, Ceará, Brazil

How to get to Ilha do Guajiru: from Fortaleza airport it is a 3 hr 15min drive by car Level:  all levels Water condition : flat to choppy (lagoon), choppy & waves (ocean) Downwind tip:  Almofala to Ilha do Guajiru Crowds:  can get quite crowded, many beginners, you can always work your way around though Best time to go:  July – December Favorite places to eat: Coco Knots for vegan food, Beleza for Tapiocas, Fresh Tuna (daily special), Acai Bowls, Do Mar for a nice dinner, 7 Beaufort for pizza night (2 times per week) Tip: get cash in Itarema and do some shopping for water and snacks there as well (Mar & Sol supermarket is a big one for example)

7. Kitesurf Spot Prea, Ceará, Brazil

Quick facts on kitesurfing in Prea

+  for strong wind lovers +  from bed to board, accommodation right at the spot + more and more infrastructure in Prea town + easier to access than Jeri and Jeri is only a 0.5 hr drive away

– super choppy/bumpy – Prea is evolving by the year but it is still quiet at night

Most important info on kitesurfing in Prea

How to get to Prea: from Fortaleza airport it is a 4.5 hr drive by car Level:  all levels although the wind is pretty strong so as a beginner it’s not the easiest spot to learn. Independent kitesurfers should be used to small kite sizes and choppy conditions. Water condition : choppy (very choppy!), some waves on the downwinder Downwind tip:  Prea to Placa or Prea to Jericoacoara Crowds:  average, lots of space to move upwind or downwind Best time to go:  July – January/February Favorite place: Rancho do Peixe for food and kiting

Kitesurf Spots Brazil: Prea close to Jericoacoara, Ceara

8. Kitesurf Spot Jericoacoara, Ceará, Brazil

The Windsurf spot in Jericoacoara from above

Quick facts on kitesurfing in Jericoacoara

+  for strong wind lovers +  unique vibe in this sandy village +  lots of restaurant, nightlife, shops and handmade goods

– it is getting more and more touristy by the year with many non-kitesurfers who love to drink and party (still to me it hasn’t lost it magic!) – a bit hard to access (if you’re driving yourself it is easiest to get yourself a local guide in Jijoca who will drive your through the dunes), you need to park your car at the outside parking in Jericoacoara and then walk into town.

View on the Dune in Jericoacoara

Most important info on kitesurfing in Jericoacoara

How to get to Jericoacoara: from Fortaleza airport it is a 5 hr drive by car Level:  all levels although the wind is pretty strong so as a beginner it’s not the easiest spot to learn. Independent kitesurfers should be used to small kite sizes and choppy conditions. Water condition : flat (Guriu lagoon) to choppy and waves Downwind tip:  Jericoacoara to Guriu (and if you want a bigger one kite all the way to Tatajuba) Crowds:  can get quite crowded depending on the spot (e.g. Guriu) Best time to go:  July – January/February Tip: Naturalmente (for Acai), Club Ventos (great lunch buffet), Caipi Street for sunset (and some Shrimp skewers from the street stand) Full Spot Guide: Kitesurf in Jericoacoara

9. Kitesurf Spot Tatajuba, Ceará, Brazil

Quick facts on kitesurfing in tatajuba.

+  lagoon and ocean to kite in

– very quiet, only a few pousadas. I personally wouldn’t stay in Tatajuba for my whole holiday, I would rather stay in Prea and Jeri and do a downwinder there or stay for a few nights but there are more and more Pousadas opening there so it will probably evolve more and more – the lagoon is tide-dependent (but you can always kite in the ocean)

Most important info on kitesurfing in Tatajuba

How to get to Tatajuba: from Fortaleza airport it is a 5.5 hr drive by car Level:  all levels Water condition : flat, choppy, waves Downwind tip:  Jericoacoara to Tatajuba Crowds:  can get quite crowded in the lagoon Best time to go:  July – January/February

10. Kitesurf Spot Barra Grande and Macapà, Piauí, Brazil

Kitesurf Spots Brazil: Barra Grande and Macapa

Quick facts on kitesurfing in Barra Grande and Macapà

+  perfect flat water lagoon and ocean +  Barra Grande has a small and cozy, laid-back vibe with some nice restaurants +  if you are staying in Barra Grande you can have flatwater with low tide (be aware of the rocks!) and then do the small downwinder to Macapà (around 2 km, it will take you around 20 min to kite back or you take one of the donkeys back) and enjoy the flatwater there with the rising tide +  from bed to board, accommodation right at the spot (Barra Grande and Macapà) available

– Macapa only has a few pousadas (but is constantly evolving) which is why I usually prefer to stay in Barra Grande – Barra Grande with high tide is super choppy (so I would go to Macapà with high tide) – Macapa lagoon is tide-dependent (but you can always kite in the ocean)

Kitesurf Spots Brazil: Barra Grande and Macapa

Most important info on kitesurfing in Barra Grande and Macapà

How to get to Barra Grande and Macapá: from Fortaleza airport it is a 7.5/8 hr drive by car to Barra Grande (or longer, depending on which shape the road is and how you drive), it is a bit longer to Macapa Level:  all levels Water condition : flat (Macapà or Barra Grande with low tide), choppy, waves Crowds:  average, lagoon can get more crowded Best time to go:  July – December

11. Kitesurf Spot Atins, Maranhão, Brazil

I was super sad we couldn’t make it all the way to Atins but after our pretty intense road trip from Fortaleza to Barra Grande we decided to head back down slowly to Fortaleza as we only had a few days left. It is one of the spots VERY high up on my kite bucket list though!

If you want to do a road trip and explore many of the spots mentioned in this blogpost I can highly recommend to either start in Atins and work your way down (and then you would fly in to Sao Luis and fly back from Fortaleza) or the other way round, start in Fortaleza and then fly home from Sao Luis. If you have a rental car that might be tricky though so plan enough time in Atins and for your trip back (maybe with a stop or two as you make your way back down again).

Kitesurfing in Spain

In 2023, we are really busy. In the spring, Portugal and the 2nd edition of Sardinia appeared. In addition, we are currently writing the Sicily Kitetravelguide, which is expected to be published in late 2023 early 2024 and at the moment we are researching for our Kitetravelguide for Spain.

The most southwestern country in the EU

In the summer of 2023 we went to Spain for 5 months and saw the complete coast of the country and discovered many great kiteposts and met great people. But that’s not all, we were also able to get to know the country intensively and would have liked to stay longer in the end.

Spain is very diverse. Besides the mostly hot touristy Mediterranean coast where the wind is often boosted by thermals, the wild southern Atlantic coast with good wind and the rugged, jagged northern coast with good waves and some hidden kite spots. So you can find good conditions for kitesurfing all year round, depending on the location and your personal preferences.

The Mediterranean coast is very hot in the summer, but in the north on the Atlantic you have cooler nights, where warm clothes can be an advantage. In the low season it can rain more often, but on the coast this rarely lasts longer, so you will always catch a few rays of sunshine during the day. Southern Spain is a popular destination for wintering, so you will always meet other campers.

We wanted to visit Spain for a long time and after traveling the entire coast, we also fell in love with this country. The warm people, the different landscapes, the good food and the always cool kite spots along the coast. That’s why we strongly recommend you to visit Spain for kitesurfing. Whether by plane or camper, the main thing is that you are flexible with a vehicle.

Spain in figures

Spain has a total area of 505,990 km² with 12,500 km² belonging to the islands and a coastline of 4,964 km, with 4000 km belonging only to the mainland. This makes Spain the fourth largest country in Europe. Spain is located on two seas, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, which in itself makes for a very diverse coastline in the country. In addition to miles of sandy beaches, there are also many cliffs with small bays, all offering different conditions for many water sports.

Spain has 47.42 million inhabitants and the capital is Madrid . The highest mountain of the mainland is Mulhacén with 3,478 m. On Tenerife you can still find the Teide with 3.718 m. In winter you can ski very well in Spain, there are several ski resorts in the Pyrenees on the border with France and along the Cantabrian Mountains (Cordillera Cantábrica) along the Atlantic Ocean. The largest lake is the Albufera Lagoon with 28 km² south of Valencia. The longest river is the Tagus , it flows with about 816 km through Spain and then Portugal and flows at Lisbon into the Atlantic Ocean .

The best time to travel in Spain

Spain is a popular destination for wintering, especially in Andalusia. However, the better wind conditions for kitesurfing in Spain are from April to October, although it can be too hot for thermals in August. On the Mediterranean, the Tramuntana, Garbi, Ponente and Levante are good winds and on the Atlantic coast the Nortada and Norteste provide good conditions. The southerly wind also puts a lot of pressure on the canopy, but usually with bad weather in tow.

The kitespots

We traveled the entire coast of Spain, talked to many kite schools and locals and were able to learn a lot. Here are a few kite spots from our discovery. As soon as there is a kitespot description for a kitespot in the blog, it will be linked here. However, this may take some time, as we are still on the road and researching.

The arrival

How we discover Spain ? Of course with our old man, the Wohnix. It is now 37 years old and will hopefully accompany us on our travels for even longer. After we did some remodeling inside, it’s like a Tiny House , with everything you need and a nice big kitchen. 🙂

When traveling to Spain, you almost always have to pass through France, unless you are coming from Portugal or arriving by ferry from Italy. Depending on where you start from, it is also worth driving through Switzerland. We went from Munich to Civitavecchia and from there we took the ferry to Barcelona. After comparing all possible routes, this was the most pleasant and cheapest way to get to Spain. However, this must always be compared individually, as prices vary greatly. From where are you traveling to Spain?

On the spot

In the run-up to the trip, we have already planned the kite spots we want to visit. We always learn more from the kite school or other kitesurfers on site. We also learn about special highlights of the environments , get tips and get all the info about the respective kitespots . You can find more in our KITEshop .

We are always on the road with our camper and can test and try everything perfectly. Here we are always happy to receive tips, great pitches and great experiences from you. What places, kitespots and sights can you recommend? We look forward to your tips. Feel free to comment, email , join our Facebook group: Kitesurfing in Spain or any of our social media channels.

WHAT'S TRENDING THIS MONTH?

Want to know what are the most popular kitesurf holiday resorts, hotels and tours being booked in April?

As we move into Spring, windy resort options are limited to Morocco (Dakhla lagoon is for flat water or Essaouira for waves), Southern Fuerteventura, Egypt (Soma Bay or El Gouna are best), and the Caribbean .

Looking ahead to the Summer Holidays and October Half-Term, it is essential to book your holiday early if you want the best locations and prices. Hot destinations this year include Le Morne in Mauritius , Ilha Do Guajiru in Brazil , and Dakhla in Morocco . This is also a great time to secure a Christmas getaway on a low deposit.

For a great deal, May and June are brilliant months to travel. Great value, not too hot, and uncrowded kitesurf spots.

You managed my anxiety [about the travel disruption] in a very polite and gentle way and supported me during the process of finding alternatives. Long story short: I'll definitely book again with you and suggest you as the agency to go for any trip. Don't give up!

Google review

I am entirely happy with how things have been handled with the travel disruption. I was dealt with flexibly, sympathetically and in a timely fashion. I have no worries that my deposit is secure and I appreciated not being pursued for the balance. The willingness of the team to provide clear information and guidance ... longish phone calls and detailed emails. This really counts. Well done to all.

Just wanted to thank you for creating our holiday for us - we loved it and could not have wished for a better time. Your bespoke design was perfect and we cannot wait (Corona allowing) to book with you guys again.

I just thought I would send you best wishes for success in surviving this dreadful time. The week we had with you was exceptional and I cannot even begin to think what a torrid time those great guys must be having at present. I so hope we can manage to do another of that quality soon.

Freeride Camper Van

Tarifa, andalousie, Spain, Espagne

Tarifa village

Upon arrival at Malaga Airport, take a cab to join the rental agency, pick up your van and let’s the Andalusian adventure begins!

On board your Camper Van you’ll quickly reach Tarifa: your home kite spot! Discover the windy European capital and start your 5 days training. You’ll have 3h or 4h lessons per day depending on our availability. This pack include group lessons, with 4 students per instructor and 2 kites. We monitor your progress using a radio headset in order to help you evolve faster and enhance your practice in real time.

Our kitesurfing lessons take place between Los Lances and Valdevaqueros in Tarifa. In case of strong winds, we move into the sheltered Mediterranean side where the wind is lighter.

We usually finish off the day by gathering at the beach bar. The “After Kite” is a precious moment where you share your experience with other kitesurfing enthusiasts over a drink, with a beautiful sunset over Tarifa!

Ride & Stay.

Live the best road trip ever, driving the Volkswagen California Ocean T6.

Your Kombi can accommodate up to 4 people, it is equipped with 2 double beds, an indoor living room and all the necessary equipment to live independently with its kitchenette. Perefcet for a trip in couple, in family or with friends.

During your kite trip in Tarifa, you can stay in your camper van with sea view in Valdevaqueros, Punta Paloma or Los Lances at 5min from Tarifa. Stay in town to enjoy the nightlife without having to drive!

Life is a ride

Here some tips to find your way. There is so many things to do, so you should find something to suit you.

session de kitesurf, apprentissage

Departure from VanBreak agency in direction of the Atlantic coast in order to reach Tarifa and start your kitesurf experience. We suggest you to take the AP-7 motorway which is paying but less dangerous and faster than the coastal road. Join us for 5 active days.

Two possibilities to spend your nights in Tarifa: Park your Van in valdevaqueros field, close to the Tangana Beach Bar or go a bit after and take the road towards Bolonia, exit Punta Paloma (5min from Valdevaqueros and 10min from Tarifa in van) and take the first left at the campsite to join the “chiringuito” (beach bar ) Volaré. Very quiet spot (a bit busy in summer time but maybe less than the field), overlooking the beach of Valdevaqueros.

Our heartfelts: Restaurants in Tarifa: Casa Lola, El Frances, El Lobo (raclette, tartiflette, run by a Belgian), Café Azul Bar for a good brunch…

sports nautiques, vacances, plage

Departure towards Cadiz. Do not hesitate to take a short stop in Bolonia to admire one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. Continue your journey towards Vejer de la Frontera, a sublime white village at the top of a hill, perfect for a typically Andalusian ambiance with some tapas.

To spend the night join the surf spot El Palmar. During the summer there are a lot of people and it is better to sleep on a paying parking space next to the lighthouse where you will find showers at your disposal. On off season, you can find a spot facing the ocean without any problems and sleeping at the rhythm of the waves.

Our heartfelts: Casa Francisco’s seafood restaurant, delicious with a nice budget. Pizzeria Dolce Vita run by Italians. To rent surfing or take lessons ask for “Kiké” surf school 9 pies: official partner VanBreak.

kitesurfing, location campervan

Sancti Petri

After a good breakfast facing the ocean we invite you to join Caños de Meca, a small town with hippie origins. You will find splendid beaches and an unusual place: the Jaima. Open in July/August, this beach bar worth the detour to enjoy a mojito at the sunset, the view is breathtaking.

Do not forget to visit Trafalgar lighthouse and the historic site of the famous battle that bears its name. Direction to Cadiz to find the nautical port of Sancti Petri, a magical place to spend the evening: a lagoon with small fishing boats, a fort hanging on a rock and some paintings to be flushed on the white walls of this village. You can spend the night in the middle of the village or very close to the lagoon.

Our heartfelts: El Palomar de la Brena restaurant in the heart of Barbate park,  you can visit the largest pigeon house in the world and understand its strategic functions. Excursion in Kayak departing from the port of Sancti Petri and discovering the Marshes or stroll at sea around the military fort.

Cadiz, ville andalouse, Espagne

Breakfast in the middle of the Sancti Petri boats and direction to Cadiz. This town is situated at the end of a kind of peninsula. Its cobbled streets are very narrow and there are few parking places. The best way is to put the van in a covered parking and quietly visit the city.

The Cathedral is surprising and worth a visit, the walk on the ramparts of the city is very pleasant, we must especially let ourselves be lost in its narrow streets and feel the good life that reigns in Cadiz. Departure to Puerto Santa Maria and camping Playa Las Dunas to spend the night in peace. Stroll on the beaches of Puerto Santa Maria before the return trip to Malaga. Count 3 hours of journey to reach Vanbreak Agency from here.

Our heartfelts: Casa del farero restaurant in Sancti Petri for delicious tapas and beautiful setting, Caleta beach in Cadiz.

Baseball Set for Road Trip to Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Rutgers baseball is on the road once again this week for a three-game series at Indiana. It is the team's first trip to Bloomington since 2019.

Game one is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday evening, followed by a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and an 11 a.m. finale on Sunday which will be broadcast nationally on BTN.

Rutgers is coming off a series on the road to Iowa.

The Scarlet Knights bounced back with a dominant 15-0 midweek win at home over St. John's on Tuesday.

The Hoosiers are 7-5 in the Big Ten and most recently won two-of-three on the road over Minnesota.

Friday and Saturday's games will be streamed on Big Ten Plus, with Sunday's game set for BTN with Jack Kizer (PxP) and Scott Pose (Analyst) on the call.

Fans can also follow along on X ( @RutgersBaseball ) for live updates. Live stats will be available here .

Series History Rutgers is 9-13 all-time against Indiana, including a 7-9 mark in Big Ten games. The teams did not play in 2023, while the Scarlet Knights won all four games against the Hoosiers in 2022, including a 14-2 run-rule victory in the Big Ten Tournament. Last Time Out

Rutgers was swept on the road last weekend at Iowa. Justin Sinibaldi delivered another quality start on Friday night, but it wasn't enough in the 8-1 defeat. On the weekend, freshman Ty Doucette hit two home runs and drove in four runs.

In Tuesday's midweek game, RU shut out St. John's 15-0 behind an eight-run first inning and quality pitching across the board.

Left Side, Strong Side

The Scarlet Knights boast one of the top left sides of the infield in the entire country. SS Josh Kuroda-Grauer (#5) and 3B Tony Santa Maria (#13) are both ranked among the best at their respective positions by D1Baseball.com at the midpoint of the season.

Kuroda-Grauer was named to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List and a Midseason First Team All-American by Perfect Game .

The duo has been the engine that powers RU's Big-Ten best offense and have the numbers to back it up.

Kuroda-Grauer is batting .440 to lead the Big Ten and rank fourth in the country. His 65 hits lead the country. His 105 total bases, 17 doubles and 20 stolen bases are all second in the Big Ten.

After missing 2023 with injury, Santa Maria ranks among the Big Ten's best with 45 runs (third), 85 total bases (fifth), 10 home runs (sixth), 42 RBI (sixth) and 16 hit-by-pitches (third).

Rotation Continuity

After having to replace the entire starting rotation in back-to-back seasons, Rutgers has enjoyed continuity on the mound in 2024.

Justin Sinibaldi and Christian Coppola have started every weekend game this season.

Sinibaldi has five outings of seven-plus innings, has gone eight-plus in three of his last seven stars and was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after a shutout against UConn. He has eight quality starts this season and has five in a row.

Coppola was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week in February after a six-inning, nine-strikeout performance at Old Dominion and earned the win against UConn with 5.2 innings, three runs and six strikeouts.

Right Side Breakout

The right side of the RU infield has enjoyed a pair of breakout seasons thus far. Senior Cameron Love is having a career year in his final season on the Banks. His .333 average is third on the team, while his 17 extra-base hits are third and he already has a career high with three home runs.

True freshman Ty Doucette has emerged after missing 10 games with injury. His eight home runs are already second-most on the team and his 37 RBIs trail only Kuroda-Grauer and Santa Maria.

Staff Updates Head Coach Steve Owens announced a number of changes to his staff ahead of the 2024 season. Mike Garza was promoted to hitting coach after serving two years as a volunteer assistant.  With the NCAA increasing the number of full-time assistant coaches from two to three, Owens added Danny Bethea to the staff from St. John's. In his role, Bethea works with the team's catchers, offense and will coach first base.  Jack Arend also joined the staff as the Director of Player Development, where he oversees video and data collection while also running camps and clinics.  Depth Behind the Dish RU has a number of quality options at the catcher position for 2024. Hugh Pinkney returns after making 48 starts at catcher and designated hitter last season, hitting .267 with 12 extra-base hits and a .716 OPS in his true freshman season. JD Jones joins the catching corps as a transfer from Miami and provides a veteran presence. True freshman Jackson Natili is primed for a big career "On the Banks" and factors in as well. Infield Experience Rutgers returns at least a full season of starting experience at every infield spot, with Jordan Sweeney (108), Kuroda-Grauer (105), Cameron Love (63) and Santa Maria (60) combining for 376 starts for RU.  Outfield Options Trevor Cohen represents the lone returning starter in the RU outfield, having started all 56 games last season and hitting .298 with 26 walks to 22 strikeouts en route to being named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. Rutgers retooled with the addition of RJ Johnson Jr. from the JUCO ranks, who is expected to start in centerfied. Johnson his .343 with six home runs and 36 RBIs, while leading his Gulf Coast State team with 61 hits and 55 runs scored in 2023.  Transfers Pete Ciuffreda (Lafayette) and Pete Durocher (Manhattan) bring a combined seven seasons of experience to the outfield and can play multiple positions.  Bullpen Arms Ben Gorski returns for his final season after an All-Big Ten season in 2023 where he locked down eight saves and posted a 3.40 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 39.2 innings. He was named to NCBWA Stopper of the Year watchlist ahead of 2024. Sam Portnoy pitched to a 3.69 ERA across 31.2 innings in 20 appearances and also earned a spot on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year watchlist. Joey DeChiaro joins the bullpen as a graduate transfer from Old Dominion, where he appeared in 50 games across four seasons for the Monarchs. After a strong summer in the Cape Cod League, DeChiaro was named Preseason All-Conference by Perfect Game. Jake Marshall was third on the Scarlet Knights in 2023 with 51.0 innings as both a starter and reliever and will factor in the team's plans once again. Marshall struck out 60 batters in 51.0 innings a year ago and has 191 strikeouts in his collegiate career.  Joe Mazza was second to only Gorski with 24 appearances for RU last season and pitch 32.0 innings with a 4.78 ERA out of the bullpen.  The bullpen will also receive a boost from the returns of RHP Gavin Stellpflug and LHP Donovan Zsak – neither of whom pitched last season.  A pair of transfers in Jordan Falco (Adelphi) and Sonny Fauci (St. John's) emerged as relievers who can provide length out of the bullpen as well.

Tammy Slaton Shares Girls' Trip with 'Spiritual Sister,' Sips Drinks and Channels Alvin and the Chipmunks

The '1000-Lb. Sisters' star is documenting her travels online as she continues hit the road with psychic Haley Michelle

Tammy Slaton/TikTok

Tammy Slaton ’s girls trip with her “spiritual sister,” psychic medium Haley Michelle , continued Thursday, with the duo sharing photos and videos of their antics on the road.

Slaton, Michelle, and a third friend, Paola Román , embarked on the trip yesterday, posting a shot of them in a supermarket as they picked up groceries for a self-described “girls trip.”

They didn’t share their location, but the trio did share some footage of their antics: They took time to mix up some drinks, with Michelle reposting Román’s video clip of the threesome sipping red beverages out of plastic hotel cups.

“Cheers to girls trips,” wrote Román on the video. Although her Instagram profile is private, she does appear in a clip Michelle posted, where the threesome re-enated a scene from the 2007 live-action film Alvin and the Chipmunks , where the chipmunks break into Jason Lee ’s house in search of food.

“It’s a food ghost town in here,” Román, lipcyncing audio from chipmunk Theodore, says.

Slaton, as brainiac chipmunk Simon, pops out from behind a tree and calls out to Alvin, played by Michelle, who bursts into frame to announce that “the cheese balls are in the hiz-ouse.”

“I never do videos like this, it was so much fun ❤️,” Michelle captioned her video.

They also shared a TikTok video of themselves posing to Psy's 2012 hit "Gangnam Style," with Michelle alluding to Slaton as a reincarnated friend.

"Finally reunited in this lifetime, I’ve missed you 🥹💜," Michelle wrote.

The posts have prompted fans of the 1000-Lb Sisters star, 37, to continue to question the nature of their relationship and whether Michelle was using Slaton for "clout."

It's perhaps what prompted Michelle to share a photo of herself embracing Slaton — a pic the reality star also shared.

“Spiritual Sisters, our powerful connection we don’t have to explain anything to anyone. You are my Best Friend 💙,” she captioned the photo .

Earlier, the duo shared a poolside photo, with Slaton wearing a blue mermaid print suit — and a big smile — alongside Michelle.

“Proud of you,” wrote Michelle in her caption of the photo, likely referring to Slaton’s 440-lbs. weight loss from bariatric surgery ,

Since her weight loss, Slaton has been staying active, recently heading to Disney World for the first time, taking her first-ever trip to the beach, and now, a road trip.

“I’m just giving myself a pat on the back for achieving something. Getting the weight off and living….I can finally say I’m living life,” Slaton has said.

County Road 26 to open Monday for local, critical trips

Limited travel for commuters using the lake city cutoff opens after state and county collaboration as bridge closure continues.

Montrose and Gunnison Counties — This weekend, CDOT and Gunnison County are working together to accelerate improvements to County Road 26 (Lake City Cutoff) so it can open Monday for local commuter travel between Montrose and Gunnison.  At the same time, engineers continue to conduct safety inspections of the US Highway 50 bridge crossing the Blue Mesa Reservoir at Dillon Pinnacles. This bridge, located west of Gunnison at Mile Point 136.3, closed Thursday in the interest of public safety after an inspection revealed a crack in one of the girders. The technical structure name for the bridge is K-07-B.

Recognizing the US 50 closure creates a significant detour for commuters traveling between Montrose and Gunnison, CDOT and Gunnison County officials this weekend prioritized getting a shorter access route in place for local travel between the two communities. That collaboration will continue as officials work to further fortify the road with gravel and manage traffic to a level that the road can safely carry.

“We are starting slow in order to increase the chances we can go faster later. The impact on western Colorado cannot be understated and we are exhausting all opportunities and partnerships to mitigate the impacts of the bridge closure,” said Martin Schmidt, Assistant Gunnison County Manager for Public Works.

On Monday, April 22, pilot cars will lead  passenger vehicles through the access route two times a day in each direction. Because CR 26 is a high-mountain, unpaved road that is not intended to accommodate the traffic volumes of US 50, travel times will be limited and commercial vehicles exceeding a 16,001 gross vehicle weight rating are prohibited. The schedule for piloted travel is:

  • 6 to 6:30 a.m. and 6 to 6:30 p.m. for westbound travel
  • 7 to 7:30 a.m. and 7 to 7:30 p.m. for eastbound travel

The queue for westbound pilot car operations will start near the intersection of CO 149 and CR 26 and the queue for eastbound travel will start near the intersection of US 50 and CR 26. The travel time on the access route is expected to be 30 minutes or more.

County Road 26 will only be open for local, essential travel during these timeframes. The road will remain closed at all other times for the ongoing restoration work needed to ensure the road remains safe for travel.

A hotline and email continue to be in place to assist customers with questions about the closure. Anyone with questions can reach out via 970-648-4423 or [email protected] . Calls will be closely monitored and will receive a prompt reply. Information is also available on the project website at bit.ly/us50bridge . Travelers should refer to COtrip.org or the smartphone COtrip Planner app to plan an alternate route.

“CDOT appreciates Gunnison county’s dedication and hard work as we cooperate to offer more options to help the western slope manage this safety closure.  CDOT will continue to support the county as we focus on the opening of County Road 26 to serve the critical needs of residents,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “County Road 26 is an important local route that is up to five hours more efficient than detouring via state highways. However, this road currently has a natural roadbed and can only accommodate limited traffic - so it is important that we help Gunnison County focus this capacity on the needs of local communities most impacted by the closure.”

There are two recommended detours for through travel via Interstate 70 to the north or US 160 to the south and these detours add six to eight hours of travel time. CDOT is coordinating with emergency service providers to ensure emergency response is unaffected.

Travel Impacts

  • US 50 is closed between Montrose and Gunnison
  • Recommended alternate routes are I-70 to the north or US 160 to the south
  • A limited, local detour is in place for travel at specific times

Carlos Correa to return from injury on upcoming road trip?

Correa was hitting the ball well before he suffered an injury on April 12.

  • Author: Joe Nelson

In this story:

After three straight wins – and possibly reaching four straight if they beat the White Sox on Thursday afternoon – the Minnesota Twins are finally heading in the right direction and more good news could come in the form of a healthy Carlos Correa.

According to Twins beat reporters Do-Hyoung Park and Dan Hayes, Correa did some glove work on Wednesday and he's swinging a bat. Both suggested that if Correa continues to feel well he could be back in the lineup at some point on Minnesota's upcoming road trip.

"Sounds like there's some possibility that he could come off the IL on the coming road trip without a rehab assignment if things keep trending well," Park reported Wednesday.

Hayes added: "This would be a positive development for the [Twins] if Carlos Correa returns sometime during the road trip. Team starts in Anaheim on Friday and then travels to Chicago. Either way, good."

Correa has been out with a right intercostal (ribs) strain since April 12. Before the injury, the 29-year-old shortstop was slashing .306/.432/.444 with a homer, two doubles and four RBI in 11 games.

The Twins got a boost earlier this week when Max Kepler (knee) returned from the injured list. Getting Correa back would put the Twins one step closer to the roster that the front office envisioned before a rash of injuries thumped the club over the head in the spring and first part of the season.

Royce Lewis, the star third baseman who suffered a serious quad strain in the season opener, continues to make progress but doesn't have a timeline for a return just yet. And star closer Jhoan Duran (oblique) is feeling good after a rehab outing at Triple-A St. Paul and he could be back in the bullpen any day now.

Colorado rapids | rapids sign ethan bandré to first-team contract ahead of two-game road trip, 25-year old goalkeeper will appear on the bench at cincinnati.

kitesurf road trip

The Colorado Rapids have further bolstered their roster at goalkeeper.

The club announced Wednesday that it has signed 25-year-old Ethan Bandré to a one-year contract, with two club options lasting one additional year each.

Bandré signed to Rapids 2 in February of this year after spending his first two seasons of professional soccer with Sporting KC II. Since then, under the guidance of new addition Zack Steffen and exceptional goalkeepers coach Chris Sharpe, Bandré has impressed the club in training and in MLS NEXT Pro matches.

In four starts this season for Rapids 2, Bandré has allowed 12 goals in what has so far been a turbulent campaign for a team that reached the Western Conference Final last year.

Adam Beaudry, who signed with the first team after being named a 2023 MLS NEXT Pro goalkeeper of the year finalist, has been training in England with Arsenal since Monday, first reported by The Athletic and confirmed by The Denver Post.

He is slated to return stateside before the Rapids’ away match against New York City FC on May 5, though it is unclear whether Beaudry or Bandré will be on the bench for that match.

Either way, it means in Bandré’s first week as a first-teamer, he will appear on the bench for an MLS match. He will serve as the backup for Steffen.

Upon Beaudry’s return, Bandré will continue to play minutes and gain valuable experience for Erik Bushey’s Rapids 2 squad.

MINNEAPOLIS — 0-for-the road trip.

With the Twins’ 6-3 come-from-behind victory Thursday afternoon, the White Sox completed a seven-game road trip, dropping their franchise record worst record to start a season to 3-22.

The four-game sweep sent the Sox home with an 0-7 trip through Philadelphia and Minnesota and a 1-13 record on the road, also a franchise record.

The Sox led 2-0 on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Pillar and RBI single by Paul DeJong, but the Twins answered with five solo home runs, two against starter Michael Soroka (five-plus innings, two runs), one against John Brebbia, and two in the ninth against Steven Wilson.

Edouard Julien (two), Ryan Jeffers, Jose Miranda and Carlos Santana provided the long balls.

Soroka pitched five scoreless innings without getting a swing and miss before giving up homers to Julien and Jeffers to open the sixth, knotting the score at 2.

Lee catching on

The combination of 37-year-old Martin Maldonado’s .048 batting average with 25-year-old Korey Lee’s .279 average and .791 OPS as well as Lee’s superior defense resulted in Lee catching three of four games of the series, including Thursday’s day game after a night game.

“I want to get him in there a little bit more consistently,” Grifol said. “At the same time I want to make sure he’s developing at the right pace and not trying to do too much too soon.”

Lee struck out with Robbie Grossman on third in the second inning, but finished with two hits. He made a sliding catch near the dugout in the bottom of the inning.

Grifol said Lee workload would be “inconsistent.”

“Sometimes he’ll play three out of four, sometimes he’ll play two out of four. Sometimes he might play one out of four. It all depends how he’s coming along on his development and the things that he’s got to work on.”

Benintendi ‘inconsistent’

Left fielder Andrew Benintendi didn’t start for the second time in the series, a night after not getting to a short flyball Grifol said needed to be caught.

“At times it looks really good. At times it doesn’t,” Grifol said. “It’s been a little inconsistent metrically. It looks like he’s been playing a little bit deeper than he’s normally used to. We’ve talked about it. We’re going to make the proper adjustments and he knows. He’s been around. He’s won a Gold Glove before so he knows what he’s got to do to get to where we need him to get to. He’s working on it.”

Benintendi pinch hit for Pillar with two on and one out in the eighth and struck out, then replaced Pillar in center field.

Clevinger gets closer

Right-hander Mike Clevinger, signed to a contract this month to return to the Sox after being their best starter in 2023, was slated to make his first start for Triple-A Charlotte Thursday. Grifol said four innings and 60 pitches was the plan, with five innings and 75 to follow in his second start. That sets up a potential 2024 debut on the next road trip against the Cardinals and Rays.
