Jimmie Austin Golf Club - Norman, Okla.

Situated on what was once called the Navy Air Technical Training Center, NATTC or more simply “South Base”, the facility served as an annex to the Norman Naval Air Station located north of town at what is now Max Westheimer Airport. In 1949, in coordination with the Navy and with the leadership of University of Oklahoma President George Lynn Cross, construction began on the OU Golf Course. At that time, famous golf course architect and native Oklahoman Perry Maxwell was commissioned to build the project, and in January 1951 the course opened for play.

In 1996, thanks to the generous contributions from OU supporters, especially that of namesake Jimmie Austin, an extensive renovation of the course was completed. World-renowned course architect Robert Cupp was chosen for the redesign, which remained true to features envisioned by Maxwell some 50 years earlier. Working with Tripp Davis, golf course architect and member of the 1989 OU Men’s National Championship Golf Team, the club completed major renovations to the course, infrastructure and facilities in 2017.

The course has played host to the 1997 Oklahoma State Amateur, 1998 and 2010 Big 12 Women's Championships, 2009 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, 2013 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship, 2012, 2018, 2022 and 2023 Men's NCAA Regional Championships, and 2013 and 2019 Women's NCAA Regional Championships.  Jimmie Austin Golf Club is set to host NCAA Regional Championships in 2025.

Since 2023, Jimmie Austin Golf Club has hosted the Compliance Solutions Championship, a premier stop on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Eight Sooners in Field as Korn Ferry Tour Comes to Norman

June 19, 2023 | Men's Golf

By: OU Athletics Communications

NORMAN  – Eight former Oklahoma golfers are set to compete this week at the Compliance Solutions Championship – a Korn Ferry Tour event hosted at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla. The eight Sooners – Quade Cummins, Martin Flores, Michael Gellerman, Chris Gotterup , Grant Hirschman, Logan McAllister , Charlie Saxon and Patrick Welch – have either full or conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour, the top developmental tour of the PGA TOUR. "We can't wait to welcome all of these guys back to Norman this week," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "The opportunity for our home golf course and the city of Norman to host a professional golf tournament is extraordinary and for our guys to play at a course they know is an exciting opportunity. I hope that Sooner Nation comes out to support our guys and watch some really high-level golf." Jimmie Austin has hosted several high-profile events in its history, including the 2009 U.S. Amateur Public Links and several NCAA Regionals. The course is home to the Oklahoma men's and women's golf teams and was named the No. 6 collegiate golf course in the country by Golfweek this year. The 2023 Compliance Solutions Championship will be the first Korn Ferry Tour event played in Oklahoma. "We are thrilled to partner with Compliance Solutions to bring Korn Ferry Tour golf to The Sooner State," said Korn Ferry Tour president Alex Baldwin. "Oklahoma is home to incredibly passionate golf fans, and this is a market we've been targeting for some time. Our membership is excited about the opportunity to compete at the Jimmie Austin Golf Club at The University of Oklahoma." All but one of the eight golfers played under Hybl at OU as Flores graduated from Oklahoma in 2005 and played under Jim Ragan. Gellerman and Saxon graduated from Oklahoma in 2015, Hirschman in 2018, Cummins in 2021, McAllister and Gotterup in 2022, and Welch in 2023. The top 30 golfers on the final points list at the end of the KFT season earn their PGA TOUR cards. Entering the week, McAllister leads the Sooner contingent with 589 points in 18th. Gotterup is in 41st followed by Flores in 68th. Cummins sits in 80th with Hirschman just behind him in 110th. Next on the points list is Michael Gellerman who is 129th. Welch, a senior at OU in 2023, has played in two KFT events this year, missing the cut at the BMW Charity Pro-Am but finishing T12 at the Wichita Open last weekend and is T150.  Tickets for the tournament are on sale now, with festivities starting on Wednesday with the Compliance Solutions Championship Pro-Am. Round one tees off on Thursday morning, with golfers playing 72 holes before a champion is crowned on Sunday afternoon.

OU Golf Club Hosts Korn Ferry Tour, Recognizing Club’s Elite Status

Aerial view of Jimmie Austin golf course at sunset

Since being named head coach of the University of Oklahoma men’s golf program in 2009, Ryan Hybl has restored the program to national prominence: His golf squads have captured three Big 12 titles, won the 2017 national championship, and he has coached 13 Sooners to 26 All-America honors. His teams are mainstays within the powers of men’s golf.

As a result, the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club has played host to several NCAA Regional tournaments which have bolstered the course’s status among the nation’s elite. In 2023, it was ranked the #6 collegiate golf course in the country by Golfweek .

Now, Jimmie Austin can add hosting the Korn Ferry Golf Tournament to its list of accomplishments. The tournament recently wrapped up play on Sunday, June 25, with Florida-native Jimmy Stanger emerging victorious.

The Korn Ferry tournament is the top developmental tour of the PGA Tour. The future of professional golf participated in the tour and OU was more than represented in this year’s edition. Eight Sooners showcased their talents, with seven of those players being Hybl alumni.

“We can’t wait to welcome all of these guys back to Norman this week,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said before the tournament began. “The opportunity for our home golf course and the city of Norman to host a professional golf tournament is extraordinary and for our guys to play at a course they know is an exciting opportunity.”

Hosting Korn Ferry is indicative of the tremendous growth the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club has experienced throughout the years.

The history of Jimmie Austin’s course can be traced back to World War II. The U.S. Navy had several training and operational areas set aside in Norman – the most famous being Max Westheimer Airport, which was known as the Naval Air Station. The facility where Jimmie Austin is today was an annex of that facility – known as the Navy Air Technical Training Center, or “South Base.”

Following the war, the Navy and OU partnered together to develop a golf course where South Base was located. In 1949, then-OU President George Lynn Cross commissioned famed golf course architect and native Oklahoma Perry Maxwell to create an elite course. In 1951, the course was opened.

As with everything related to the university, the golf course strove for improvements. Over the years, donations from generous OU alumni led to renovated facilities. In 1996, a large donation from OU alumnus Jimmie Austin led to extensive renovations across the board.

Once again, OU commissioned a world-renowned architect, this time Robert Cupp, to oversee the new process of renovations. Cupp’s task was not only to improve the course, but to remain faithful to Maxwell’s original work. Cupp did just that.

The club’s namesake made his way as an oil and gas contractor and independent producer from Seminole, Oklahoma. The Austin family loved the university and saw their lead gift as an extension of that love. Since then, the Austin family has held close ties to the university with former students and even a Regent – Jimmie’s son Paul D. Austin from 2000 to 2007. Jimmie passed away at the age of 90 in 2007, but the love for golf and the course still holds strong.

In 2017, architect Tripp Davis – an OU men’s golf alum who was a part of the 1989 National Championship team – helped complete new renovations to infrastructure and facilities. As recently as 2022, OU alumnus Jerry Ransom donated $5 million toward a new OU indoor golf performance center and renovation of the Charlie Coe Golf Learning Center. This recent donation was a part of the university’s “Lead On” $2 billion fundraising campaign.

Jimmie Austin’s status of being one of the nation’s premier courses is continuing its legacy to be even better.

In the club’s logo, the stylized casual script of Jimmie Austin’s name hovers over a leaf from a bur oak tree. These bur oaks are known to have lived for hundreds of years and can be found throughout the course.

A particular specimen found on the right side of the 7 th fairway, 75 yards short of the green, is believed to be hundreds of years old. It is known as the Champion Bur Oak for the entire state of Oklahoma. The tree is symbolic for what Jimmie Austin Golf Course strives to be, a course of champions. That’s what it has become.

OKC Spark: The Spark defeated the USSSA Pride 6-3 Saturday in Viera, Florida, improving to 6-0 on the season. Former OU standout Haley Lee went 3 for 4, drove in two runs and scored twice, while fellow Sooner alum Keilani Ricketts hit a two-RBI double in her lone plate appearance. Donnie Gobourne was solid in the circle for OKC, striking out 12 and allowing just two hits and three runs in 6 ⅓ innings.

OKC Dodgers: The Las Vegas Aviations beat OKC 10-6 Sunday in the series finale at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The Dodgers scored five runs in the fourth, but Las Vegas (34-40) responded in a big way, scoring seven in the fifth. Matt Andriese struggled on the mound for OKC (50-23) in relief and fell to 5-4 on the year after allowing eight runs and eight hits in just two innings. OKC won the series 3-2.

MLB: The Los Angeles Angels acquired veteran infielder Mike Moustakas from Colorado moments after their 25-1 victory over the Rockies on Saturday night. The Rockies got minor league right-hander Connor Van Scoyoc, who was 4-3 with a 2.76 ERA in 11 starts at Class A Tri-City this season. Moustakas hit .270 with four homers and 17 RBIs in 47 games with the Rockies after joining them in spring training.

WNBA: Brittney Griner will be starting in the WNBA All-Star Game a year after she was an honorary choice by the league while she was being detained in Russia. The Phoenix Mercury’s center was chosen by fans, media and players Sunday for her ninth All-Star game. A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart were the top vote getters among fans and will be the captains of the two teams when the game is played in Las Vegas on July 15. The two players were also captains last year and are each making their fifth All-Star appearances.

Other winners of the tournament include Scott Gutschewiski (2023), Hayden Buckley (2021), Andrew Novak (2020) and Mark Hubbard (2019).

Hubbard's victory in 2019 featured the lowest score to par in the five-year history. He shot 26-under par over four rounds.

The $1 million purse tournament is contested on Lakewood National Golf Club's Commander course, which is an Arnold Palmer Design Company track.

Gibson fires final-round 64, wins Korn Ferry Tour event in Columbia

korn ferry tour in oklahoma

Written by Staff @KornFerryTour

BOGOTA, Colombia – Rhein Gibson was already a Korn Ferry Tour winner, but Sunday’s four-stroke victory at the Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard marked his first win in a 72-hole event. Gibson, a native of Australia, Edmond resident and member of Oak Tree National, closed with a bogey-free 7-under 64 and capped the lowest round of the week on Country Club de Bogota’s Lagos Course with an eagle at the par-5 18th.

A new addition to the trophy case 🏆 With 148 starts under his belt, Rhein Gibson is now a two-time Korn Ferry Tour champion. pic.twitter.com/AfQKXP8hog — Korn Ferry Tour (@KornFerryTour) February 12, 2023

Gibson emerged from a crowded leaderboard which, at one point Sunday afternoon, saw six players tied for the lead at 10-under par. The 37-year-old Gibson separated from the pack and reached 13-under par with a birdie at the par-4 ninth followed by an eagle at the par-5 10th. Another birdie at the par-3 15th and the aforementioned eagle at No. 18 took him to 16-under par for the tournament and put him four strokes clear of runner-up and former Oklahoma State golfer Kevin Dougherty.

Gibson’s four-stroke win tied FedExCup champion Patrick Cantlay (2013) and Mark Anderson (2019) for the second-largest margin of victory in the 13-season history of the Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard, only trailing Ben Taylor’s six-stroke victory in 2018. It also marked the largest margin of victory in a Korn Ferry Tour event since David Kocher’s six-stroke win at the 2022 Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper last July.

In addition to being the lowest round of the week on the host course, Gibson’s 64 tied the lowest final round posted in the 13-season history of the Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard. The only other final-round 64 produced by a champion of the event came from Mito Pereira in 2020.

Gibson opened his week with a 2-under 68 on Country Club de Bogota’s Pacos Course, the par-70 and 6,249-yard satellite course introduced to the event in 2019. The three previous champions carded a 65 or better on Pacos, but Gibson did the majority of his scoring on the Lagos Course.

After a double-bogey six at Lagos’ par-4 13th in the second round, Gibson made just two bogeys the rest of the tournament and played his final 41 holes at 15-under par.

“This is pretty vindicating,” said Gibson, whose previous Korn Ferry Tour win came at the  rain-shortened 2019 BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX . “That (win) was a little truncated. We knew going into the third round it was going to be the final round. To get four rounds done, play awesome on the weekend, bogey-free on Sunday, it just takes the cake. I’m over the moon.”

Gibson left Australia at age 18 and played collegiately at Oklahoma Christian University, an NAIA program in Edmond. Gibson garnered four All-America First Team selections (2005-08) and led Oklahoma Christian to the verge of a national title each of his seasons on the team. (Oklahoma Christian won two of the next three NAIA National Championships and eventually joined NCAA Division II after Gibson exhausted his eligibility.)

“It’s pretty surreal to pack my life up in a suitcase and come to America and go to Oklahoma,” Gibson said. “I didn’t even know where it was without an atlas back then.”

Gibson turned professional in 2009 and would not earn Korn Ferry Tour membership until a solo-fourth finish at Final Stage of the 2014 Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament. In his first season on the Korn Ferry Tour, Gibson closed the the 2015 Korn Ferry Tour Finals with back-to-back top-10s and earned a PGA TOUR card.

Although Gibson fell back to the Korn Ferry Tour after a No. 199 finish in the 2015-16 FedExCup Standings, he graduated again at the conclusion of the 2019 season, doing so off the strength of his aforementioned victory and a T8 at the Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard.

The next two seasons on the PGA TOUR, however, Gibson fell outside the top 190 in the FedExCup Standings and was once again relegated to the Korn Ferry Tour. Last season, Gibson missed 14 cuts in 22 starts and had just two top-25s, leaving him at No. 150 on the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Points List.

“I wasn’t sure how much more golf I was going to do. Decided not to go to Q-School, thought I’d take a chance on (3-4 Years) Past Champion status,” Gibson said. “Worked my butt off this fall and this wintertime, kind of got my game in shape. The game felt good coming here. I love the place. I knew I could contend, and a good round yesterday put me in contention. To go out and do what I did today was just insane.”

At 37 years and 11 days of age, Gibson became the oldest Korn Ferry Tour winner since David Skinns won the 2021 Pinnacle Bank Championship presented by Aetna and punched his ticket to the PGA TOUR at 39 years, 6 months, 14 days of age.

“I’m old now. All these young kids coming out of college, it’s crazy,” said Gibson, who shares a 2-year-old son with his wife, Nancy. “Just shows that I can still hang with these young guys, so it’s pretty cool.”

Paired with a T31 finish from last week’s The Panama Championship (after missed cuts in the first two events of the season), Gibson’s victory moved him to No. 3 on the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Points List, behind two-time runner-up Cody Blick and points leader Chandler Phillips, who backed up a win in the season-opening event with a T12 the next week.

With a little over five weeks until the Korn Ferry Tour continues its season at the Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club (March 23-26), Gibson intends to head home to Australia for the first time in more than three years.

“I haven’t been to Australia since COVID,” Gibson said. “I’ve seen my parents, but not many other people. Pretty excited to get home.”

The Korn Ferry Tour is coming to Oklahoma this year with the Compliance Solutions Championship June 22-25 at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman. Volunteer and ticket information is available at https://compliancesolutionschampionship.com/

Besides Gibson and Dougherty, other players with Oklahoma ties competing were third-round leader Kris Ventura (OSU), who tied for seventh at 10-under. Tied for 28th at 6-under were former OU Sooners Grant Hirschman, Quade Cummins (Weatherford) and Chris Gotterup. Former Jenks and OSU golfer Brendon Jelley shot even-par and missed making his first Korn Ferry Tour cut by a single shot. Also missing the cut were Logan McAllister (OU and Oklahoma City) and Tag Ridings, who grew up in Tulsa.

Five things to know: Alejandro Tosti

Need to Know

Change Text Size

HOUSTON – PGA TOUR rookie Alejandro Tosti has entered the chat.

The Argentina native earned a spot in Saturday’s final group at the Texas Children’s Houston Open alongside Tony Finau and Thomas Detry, as he seeks his first TOUR title in just his eighth start as a member.

This week has been different though. He opened in 66-67 at Houston’s beloved muni venue to hold second place into the weekend, two back of Finau.

Here are five things to know about Tosti.

1. He grew up riding the bus to the course

Tosti had an unconventional introduction to the game. His origins stem from his childhood home in Rosario, Argentina, playing with a charcoal stick and ping-pong ball; he and his brother would bet five cents to see who holed the ball into a backyard drain. Starting at age 8, he would often take a one-hour bus ride from Rosario to the nearest public course in Perez to practice on most weekdays; his father taught him the bus route, and his parents would walk him to and from the bus stop.

“That kid always dreamed on that bus ride to be able to have a chance to play on the PGA TOUR and now it’s a reality,” Tosti said. “It’s happening, so just enjoy it and try your best.”

From humble beginnings, Alejandro Tosti savors his PGA TOUR moments

2. He sees golf as art

Tosti isn’t afraid to get creative off the tee. Whether the hole plays for a draw, fade or straight ball, he readily accepts the challenge – or sometimes cooks up his own play. Hard hooks, spinny cuts and low lasers are all among his arsenal. He thrives in this area too; he entered this week ranked No. 7 on TOUR in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee.

It’s no surprise that when asked Friday to name the strength of his game, he simply said “driver.”

“I just enjoy visualizing a shot and just stepping out there and execute it; it's the fun part of the game,” Tosti said Friday. “Since very young I was always that way. Grew up at a course that is very short and you have to work the ball both ways. It's the same here, but the courses are longer now.”

3. He’s a foodie

Tosti loves to cook and considers Argentine empanadas to be his specialty; he has been known to cook for host families at various stops in professional golf. He didn’t start cooking until he moved to the United States for college; now he enjoys cooking Argentinian meals, Asian food and using different spices to accentuate flavors.

“My descendancy is Italian and we’re big into cooking … I grew up going out to eat three to four times a year,” Tosti said. “We cook at a friend’s place, or everybody comes to your house or go to a family party; it’s always home cooking. I grew up with my mom fixing lunch every day and then my dad fixing dinner for every meal, so I got it from them.”

Tosti particularly enjoys his parents’ breaded chicken – “in the oven, just plain with some good salad or mashed potatoes” – and the aforementioned empanadas.

“I enjoy preparing my meals and enjoy exploring different types of kitchens, different spices,” he said.

4. He’s a fixer

Tosti appreciates his golf gift but doesn’t want the game to consume his life. He enjoys venturing outside the ropes and doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty, citing the influence of his dad, an electronic engineer.

“I’m not a golf fanatic,” Tosti said. “I’m a good player who takes the time to do the work, but once the work is done, I take off and I do a lot of things. I love cars; I try to modify my cars and change stuff in it myself and learn about it. I’m a fixer. I like taking apart stuff and figuring out what’s going on, at least try. My dad is an electronic engineer and I grew up seeing a lot of stuff being taken apart and fixed, so that’s something that I’m still learning.”

Case in point – Tosti recently found a blender about to be thrown out and took pride in fixing it.

“The last one was a blender that was next to the trash can,” he said. “I’m like, ‘Wow, this blender in the trash can.’ I took everything apart and that there was just one wire that was cut, and I put it together with a soldering iron and just worked out great.”

5. His accomplishments are far-reaching

Some might see Tosti’s name on a TOUR leaderboard as a surprise, but his game has been building toward this moment. He was a four-time winner at the University of Florida and earned first-team All-American honors as a junior in 2017; he was also medalist at the 2017 SEC Championships. After turning pro in 2018, he won on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica the next year and again in 2022, where he finished No. 5 on the season-long standings to earn Korn Ferry Tour membership.

Then he produced a banner 2023 Korn Ferry Tour season, winning the Pinnacle Bank Championship presented by Woodhouse – including a hole-out eagle on the final day – en route to a third-place finish on the season-long standings and his first PGA TOUR card.

His rookie season hadn’t gone as plan into Houston, but things are coming together.

“I was really sad at the beginning of the year not being able to kind of mentally engage with the game, not be connected, not getting the results that I wanted,” Tosti said Friday. “Made a couple changes coming into this week and they're working, so just going to keep it this way.”
