We had heard how beautiful and relaxing visiting Krabi Thailand could be. There was a lot to do around Krabi and finding things to do in Krabi with kids seemed easy. After nearly three months of long term travel, we thought a Krabi trip would be the perfect spot for a few day’s rest and we were absolutely right!

As we are travelling on a budget we had to be picky about what we did and how much it would cost us during our stay in Krabi. Travelling as a family of four (we are now classed as 3 adults and 1 child as Willow is 14) excursions can add up very quickly. We also decided to split our days with a beach holiday first with a stay in Ao Nang Beach before heading into Krabi Town to see out the rest of our time there.

Where is Krabi Town in Thailand?

Krabi Town  is the provincial capital of Krabi. Located at the mouth of the river, it is a small, typically Thai, bustling market town. Krabi Town is the gateway for tourists visiting the beaches and islands of southern Thailand.

Where to stay in Krabi with family

How to get to Krabi Town?

Krabi Town is serviced by a number of direct flights by budget airlines. You can fly to Krabi Town with budget airlines AirAsia, Nok and Bangkok Airways from within the region. European budget Airline Norwegian flies to Krabi.  Full-Service carriers  such as British Airways, Qatar, Thai Airway and more service Krabi.

You can get a bus to Krabi Town from Malaysia and destinations in Thailand. You can search for buses to 12go Asia .

Even if you are visiting Krabi Thailand without kids these are things you can do as well. Our daughters are older now and are starting to enjoy some older activities that cities have to offer. Spend a couple of nights out at Ao Nang Beach

Staying in Ao Nang can be quite expensive if you are not careful where you book. We decided for our stay in Ao Nang with the kids we would stay in a villa just out of town and use the free shuttle that our villa supplied for us. It was an easy way to get to Ao Nang Beach, shops and local restaurants.

One of the best things to do in Ao Nang Beach is to enjoy the beach! We had some friends worried about the long boats coming in and out of the beach but we found there was a section that was fenced off to protect swimmers. If you are looking for something cheap to do in Ao Nang with kids this would have to be it… it will all depend on how much ice cream you eat!

You can also take one of the longboats out to another beach for the day as Ao Nang can get pretty crowded. Some other beaches easily reached from Ao Nang are:

• Railay Beach
• Railay West Beach
• Railay East Beach
• Phra Nang Beach
• Tonsai Beach

We only spent the day at Ao Nang Beach. We had planned to go to Railay Beach as well as it is known as one of the best beaches in Krabi. Railay Beach is only accessible by longboat from Ao Nang Beach, and it was going to cost us 200 Baht for each return. We were seriously considering it until we saw the flood of people waiting for the longboats to take them.

Where should you stay at Ao Nang Beach?

We can highly recommend Oscar Villa for a family of four to stay in while visiting Ao Nang. While it is well off the beach it is in a nice, area with a couple of restaurants within walking distance.

Rating an 8.5 from over 637 reviews and starting at $57US per night for a family room with a pool view. Oscar Villa Aa Nang Krabi has a location score of 7.3. For guests, Oscar Villa Ao Nang Krabi has free Wi-Fi, toiletries, breakfast, a free shuttle bus to the beach and an outdoor pool.

Ao Nang Night Markets

The Ao Nang night markets are on every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night and are a hive of activity. You can get some amazing food and souvenirs from here. If you are looking for one of the top things to do in Ao Nang with kids, this would be it. But with most places, this can get busy. Watch the kids don’t wander off.

Krabi family activities – Sunset Cruises

Wow…and wow. We were lucky enough to go on this fabulous cruise during our stay in Ao Nang. We met the guys from Krabi Sunset Tours at Ao Nang Beach. They took us on a long boat out to the larger ship, an old Junket! Once on board, we were told all about our day and what we would be doing like;

• Paddleboarding
• Snorkelling
• Swimming with bioluminescent plankton
• A brilliant dinner and snacks all-day
• An epic sunset to end the amazing day

Why a Krabi Sunset cruise is one of the best things to do in Krabi?

We loved this cruise with the kids. I was worried at first as the crowd seemed quite young but we had an amazing group with who we chatted for a long time during our time on the boat. The crew could not have done enough for us and the girls. At one stage while swimming it is deep enough to jump from the top of the boat and Marley did it!

Micheal encouraged her and talked her through it and she was so proud of herself. Micheal was the same as me and I ended up snorkelling.

I am not a big water person and this was one of the best things I have ever done in my life.

It is definitely one of the top things to do in Krabi.

For us, this is the best thing to do in Krabi with kids on your Krabi holiday. Not only will you love your time onboard the boat with Krabi Sunset Cruises, but you are also safe in their hands and so are your kids.

Mother Nature always has her own plans but on our trip, we saw

• Coral Reefs
• Damsel Fish

Tips for the best Krabi Sunset Cruise with kids:

• Take sunscreen
• Make sure you have some towels. You may be able to hire them from your Ao Nang accommodation
• Water and soft drinks are provided but if you would like a beer or a cocktail take some extra cash with you
• Tell the guys as soon as you book if you have any dietary needs and they will make sure you are looked after
• Get ready for some SERIOUS FUN
• If you wear prescription glasses there may be a set of goggles for you to snorkel with. Just check with the guys.
• If you cannot swim or you are a weak swimmer please tell the crew once you board. They deal with this all the time and they are able to help you get the most from your trip even if you are not a confident swimmer.

*Charlie was a guide on our cruise. She took both the girls out to a reef and helped them snorkel while I stayed on the boat and Mark went off to get some footage. Once they were back on the boat Charlie went through all the fish and sea life they had seen on some cards that they had on the boat with the girls. It was fantastic for them and made for a brilliant classroom that day!

Krabi Town Night Markets

Yum, yum and yum! Many people know all about the Krabi town weekend night markets but there are a few that go all week too and they are very popular Krabi tourist attractions.

Some of the best Krabi night markets are little ones that are still pretty local and won’t cost you an arm and a leg to eat there. If you are looking for the best places to visit in Krabi the night markets are a must-see.

You will be overwhelmed with the delicious smells, the exotic fresh fruit everywhere and we were feeding our family of four most nights for around 600 Baht with drinks!

So if you are not into partying the night away anymore this is the best thing to do in Krabi at night!

How much are some items at the Krabi night markets?

You can eat extremely well at the Krabi night markets and not spend a lot. We stayed across the road at City Hotel from the Krabi City night market. The stallholders there are amazing and after a few days, you will feel like a local with the greetings they give you.

They also love kids and are always willing to help you out. These are some of the prices we paid at the Krabi City night market but you will pay more at the other more tourist visited markets in Krabi.

Where should I stay in Krabi town?

As I said above we stayed at the City Hotel Krabi. It was right over the road from the night market and next door to a seven-11. The beds were hard but the location was absolutely magnificent.

Rating an 8.0 from over 833 reviews and starting at $48US per night for a standard double room. City Hotel Krabi has a location score of 8.8 and offers guests free Wi-Fi, toiletries, family rooms, airport shuttle, laundry service and breakfast.

James Bond Island Day trip

We did this day trip from Krabi to mainly see the famous James Bond Island film set and we can tell you it has to be one of the biggest Krabi tourist attractions.

It ended up being a very long day but we also got to see some fantastic temples and awesome scenery from the boat with kids in Thailand .

James Bond Island was itself so crowded and to be honest the first words out of Mark’s mouth were ‘I thought it would be bigger’.

It is an Instagrammers heaven with people pulling their best 007 poses, showing just enough bum cheek in the water to still be G-rated and bustling for their best spots all over the island.

We did leave with a laugh at all of this and we still enjoyed our extremely hairy long boat ride out here. This Krabi island tour is a great day out for any movie enthu siast.

Tips for your James Bond Island day trip from Krabi:

• Make sure you have good shoes on. Getting in and out of the longboat can be hard
• Take a lot of sunscreens and a good hat
• If you can take a sarong. You may need it for the temples but it can also help with keeping the sun off while you are in the boat
• Freeze some water the night before and take it with you
• There are toilets on the island but you need your own toilet paper
• If you have kids take some snacks or get some at the first stop
• If you have hearing problems a set of earplugs may be a good idea as the longboats can be very loud

Visit Wat Kaew Temple

On our little Krabi sightseeing walk around we saw a white temple sitting on top of a hill. It looked beautiful so we planned for the next day to go and see it. I can never believe how white these buildings are and how intricate the designs are on the inside.

We did not visit for long, only about half an hour as we waited to go inside as some people were praying, and I don’t like to take pictures while they are. It probably took us the longest time to walk up the steps, around 120 of them, but they are nicely spaced out and not too high for little legs.

Walk along the river walk at dusk

Oh, this was one of my favourite things to do in Krabi. I loved watching the sun go down and as it had cooled off it was easy to enjoy a nice wander with a mango smoothie!

There are a couple of playgrounds, some street art and some sculptures along the walk if you have time to do the whole thing. It was one of my favourite things we did in Thailand with kids

We had an amazing time at the Krabi night markets and made some great friends on the days we were there. I believe that the Thai people are lovely and want to do the best for all people not just tourists when they visit Thailand. We felt so welcome in Krabi and it is still one of the best places in Asia that we visited.

Essentials for travelling with kids in Krabi Thailand

When you are travelling with kids especially travelling with teenagers you need to have some essentials to make the trip much easier. These are all items that we never leave home without on a long trip to make sure our family travel adventures go smoothly.

Do I need a visa to enter Thailand?

Yes, you do. If you’re only staying in Thailand for 30 days you will get a visa on arrival at the airport. If you want to stay 30-60 days you will need to apply for a visa in your home country at the Thai embassy or you will need to do a visa run. A Visa run is where you leave Thailand by land or plane and then re-enter thus renewing your passport for an extra 30 days.

Currency Exchange and ATMs in Thailand

We had no problem withdrawing money from ATMs. One thing about Asia is there is an ATM on every corner just about. Try and withdraw multiple days’ worth of money at a time. It was costing us $5 (Australian) in withdrawal fees.

Money in Thailand

The official National Currency in Thailand is the Thai Baht. The abbreviation used for the Thai Baht is the TBH and the symbol for the Baht is ฿. The Thai Baht comes in ฿20, ฿50, ฿100, ฿500, ฿1000 banknotes as well as ฿1, ฿2, ฿5, ฿10 coins There is also a ฿60, ฿70, ฿80, ฿500,000 and 25, 50 satang coins but they are rarely used. You will find it easy to withdraw Thai Baht from ATM and there are plenty of options within stores to pay with your card.

Getting to and around Krabi Thailand with Kids

Getting to Krabi is easier than you might think, and once you’re there, getting around is a breeze. The easiest way to reach Krabi from outside of Thailand is by flying into Krabi International Airport , which is well-connected to other major cities in Asia. From the airport, you can easily find taxis or shuttle services to take you to your accommodation or area attractions.

If you’re already in Southern Thailand, you can take a ferry or speedboat to Krabi from these piers: Ao Por Pier, Yamoo Pier, Bang Rong Pier, Rasada Pier and Klong Hia Pier. If you’re already on another island like Phi Phi , you can catch the same ferries from their local pier. We took a ferry from the Ton Sai Pier in Phi Phi to the Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi Town. This route runs about 7 times per day for around $60.

Once you’re in Krabi, getting around is convenient and affordable. The most common mode of transportation for tourists is by using tuk tuks or songthaews, which are small open-air trucks that operate as shared taxis. They are a great way to travel short distances and explore nearby attractions. Another popular option is to rent a scooter or a bicycle, which allows you to explore the city at your own pace.

Note: You will need an international driver’s license to ride a motorcycle or scooter in Thailand.

Breeze Cafe & Bistro (Ao Nang Beach)

Kids will love the restaurant’s cool décor, which is full of bright colors, plenty of seating and plenty of space to run around. The menu offers Italian and Mediterranean dishes, with pizzas, pastas, grilled seafood and meat dishes, so there is something to suit everyone. The portion sizes are generous, and the service is friendly and attentive. There is usually a special children’s menu here as well.

Tom Yum Kung (Ao Nang Beach)

This restaurant is clean and well set up for families, with a large variety of dishes to choose from. They have a variety of Thai dishes that are made with fresh ingredients and served to perfection. The spicy flavors of Tom Yum Kung are sure to please the more adventurous eaters in the family, while the milder dishes can appeal to even the littlest eaters. The friendly staff always make sure to look after young diners and cater to their needs.

BangBang Cafe (Railay Beach)

This cafe offers a variety of delicious dishes prepared with the freshest ingredients so you can enjoy a unique dining experience. The environment is also family-friendly and the kids can have fun with the sand castle building and glo Bliss activities while you relax and savor the cool ocean breeze. There are swings and hammocks along the beach to keep your children entertained while you enjoy a beverage and an amazing view. The staff are very friendly and attentive and you can be sure that you and your children will have a pleasant, memorable experience.

Aula Cafe (Ao Nang Beach)

This cafe is family friendly and offers a good range of delicious dishes and snacks. There are plenty of options for both adults and children alike, including healthier choices like salads and grilled dishes. You can also find some Italian-style dishes complete with pizza and pasta. The cafe is also well known for its espresso coffees and fresh juices. The staff are friendly and attentive as well.

The Ao Nang Night Market is a great for visitors, as it offers a wide variety of delicious street food and traditional Thai dishes to try. Night Market is a lively atmosphere with friendly local vendors that make the environment enjoyable for both adults and kids. Not only is there great food choices, there’s also unique handicrafts, live music and street performances for all night entertainment.

Amazon Cafe (Ao Nang Beach)

This popular cafe has hearty breakfast items, delicious sandwiches and pastas, plus fresh salads and fruit bowls. Enjoy local delicacies like Thai fried rice or Tom Yam soup. Plus, the cafe has free Wi-Fi and serves many vegan and vegetarian dishes. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the staff is friendly and helpful. Plus they have a kid-friendly play area and a menu specifically for little diners.

7-Eleven (Ao Nang + everywhere in Thailand)

7-Eleven is a great place to grab a quick and affordable snack for the kids. There are lots of options like cold drinks, snacks, and pre-packaged meals that are easy to eat on-the-go. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Seua Krabi)

The Tiger Cave Temple is a Buddhist temple in the northeastern part of Krabi, named after the tiger paw prints in the cave. It has a very strenuous flight of stairs to reach the summit, approximately 1,400 steps. While there are tall statues and other great sites, it can be a little much for younger kids.

Longboat rides in Krabi with kids is a great way to explore the natural beauty of the region and enjoy a unique experience together. The longboat ride will take you through many different waterways, mangroves, and limestone cliffs, and you will have the opportunity to explore caves and other natural wonders. 

During the ride, there are often various stops that give you the opportunity to go swimming or kayaking and experience the various different fish and wildlife. These types of rides often last from one to two hours, and will usually cost around 1,000 Thai Baht per person. We negotiated to 2,500 THB for the entire family. Most longboat rides in Krabi are family friendly and can accommodate children of all ages. Many companies also provide blankets and life vests to keep the kids safe and comfortable. 

While on the boat, you can expect to see a variety of wildlife including many species of fish, monkeys, and birds. There are sometimes stops where you can feed these animals, or get food offered by local vendors. These stops also provide a great opportunity for photos and to learn more about the region.

Emerald Pool

The Emerald Pool is a natural lagoon n the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve. Although it’s not very close to Krabi Town or Ao Nang Beach, it really is worth the trip with the family. The cool water is very refreshing and the pool’s color changes depending on the temperature, minerals, and limestone leaching from the nearby hillside.

The Monkey Trail is located in Ao Nang and is only about 800 meters long. The Monkey Trail takes you from Ao Nang Beach to Pai Plong Beach and should not take you longer than 20 minutes. Nice and short, with monkeys along the way, which is a perfect activity for the kids.

Things You Should Know About Traveling to Krabi Thailand With Kids

Elephants are very popular in Thailand and kids will enjoy trekking on them. A short distance from Krabi you can find camps and sanctuaries where you can feed and interact with elephants and watch them bathe! Adjoining islands like Phi Phi, Bamboo island, Koh Poda, Koh Talu and Chicken island are all beautiful islands to visit. Beach time at Ao Nang is great for kids who want to build sandcastles and kick the waves. For an educational trip, take the kids to the Shell Cemetery, which has fossilized remains of millions of seashells and sea creatures. The Krabi Tiger Cave where they can spot ancient tiger footprints. Pick up some bananas to feed monkeys that inhabit the cave.

Krabi is a coastal town located on the west coast of Thailand that is surrounded by craggy limestone hills and pristine islands. It has a spot on the bucket list of countless travellers. 

Vibrant bustling streets in Ao Nang Beach and the gorgeous view of Railay Beach, dining by the river in Chao Fah Night Market, dipping in Emerald Pool, panoramic view of Krabi city – it’s not exaggerating to say that Krabi truly has something for everyone . 

Did I mention the Krabi island hopping tours? There are plenty of those to go around!

Hiking in Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint

If you’re planning a trip to Krabi, Thailand, here is the perfect 3 days in Krabi itinerary to ease up your travel planning!

We’ll include island tours in the Andaman Sea, the famous Railay Beach, Krabi night market, hikes through the jungle, views over the stunning Krabi province, and more. There is so much to do when you visit Krabi town and the surrounding areas!

Day 1 – Hikes and Nightlife

Let’s get the first morning of your Krabi itinerary started with some hiking. You’ll end the day exploring Ao Nang, a vibrant town for nightlife.

What’s a better way to start your trip in a new city than enjoying the panoramic view over the surrounding wilderness after an exhausting hike?

Everyone has their way of fighting the fatigue of flying. In my case, I always prefer hiking, which guarantees a good night’s sleep at the end of the day.

The hike to Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint is not a difficult one, but it does take some time – around 2-3 hours for a return trip. 

And the next stop on our Krabi itinerary is on the way back from Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint, so plan for a long day out. 

There are plenty of free motorcycle parking lots at the entrance in front of the luxurious resorts. Don’t ride past the gate, if not, you’ll be charged a parking fee for a distance of 5 minutes’ walk.

There is no entrance fee to this hike, but the ranger at the counter will repeatedly remind you to tip them before and after you do the hike.

Like other hikes, there are steep and plain parts on the trail. For some steeper parts, they’ve built staircases to make your hike easier. 

It’s all dirt trail on the hike, and wearing a sandal is no doubt a bad idea. The dense jungle blocks off any winds that could be cooling you off, so make sure you bring plenty of water to hydrate yourself!

When you’re approaching the peak, there are signboards pointing to a waterfall and a lake. You may want to avoid these as they are not all that attractive.

At the peak, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view at a few hundred meters above sea level. Just make sure you don’t stand on the dangerous cliffs barred off from visitors. 

Never risk your life for a photo, just enjoy the view from the vantage point.

If you have the time, stop at Tubkaek Beach , located right just after leaving Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint. This is a very quiet, long beach with amazing views on the limestone hills budding from the sea surface in distance.

The Krabi Shell Cemetery is located 17 kilometres from Krabi town centre, which makes a great detour on your way back from the Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint. That’s if you’re staying in Krabi town. 

The road leading to the entrance of Susan Hoi is intercepted at the main road connecting Ao Nang Beach and Krabi Town. 

With the shell fossils dating back to 25-40 million years, it’s a great place for those who’re interested. But if you’re not into these things, you’ll probably want to pass on this attraction and head straight back into Krabi town. 

The entrance fee to Susan Hoi is 200 Baht per entry.

On your way to the next point, don’t forget to grab some snacks or drinks from the Family Mart or 7-Eleven. They’re spread out across the town like mushrooms, you find them literally everywhere.

Wat Kaew Korawaram is absolutely the most elegant temple in Krabi. Located right inside Krabi town centre, the temple is easily accessible to visitors staying near the pier. 

The staircases leading to the temple from the main road are decorated with naga sculptures, giving it a classic Thailand Buddhist temple appearance. 

Upon reaching the temple, you’ll notice several dozens of information boards depicting the stories of Buddha – the birth of Buddha, how Buddha achieved enlightenment , and more. 

The only downside is that some of the details and explanations are in the Thai language only.

While you’re there, take a moment and appreciate the architecture of the majestic temple. The entrance to Wat Kaew Korawaram is free of charge!

Now we’re talking about one of the most popular beaches in Thailand – Ao Nang Beach. This well-trodden beach is often the spot to be for sunset views.

And despite the crowds, there’s no reason to miss Ao Nang on your Krabi itinerary.

On your way to Ao Nang Beach, you’ll pass by dozens of vibrant stores before reaching the parking lot.

While the beach is always filled during evening hours, it’s totally possible to find a spot for yourself on the massive stretch of beach.

Head into the bustling streets and alleys of Ao Nang when the sun goes down as this is when the nightlife begins. 

Hundreds of restaurants serve cuisines from all around the world on the wide budget range. Need cheap eats? Head over to the night market. 

Bars, pubs, and souvenir stores are spread throughout Ao Nang, so you’ll surely enjoy your night there!

Day 2 – Island Hopping

After a fun night in Ao Nang, get ready for an epic day. Your second day in your Krabi itinerary will be an unforgettable one.

Today, we’re going island-hopping! You’ll get to see some gorgeous islands, and even pay a visit to the infamous Railay Beach.

Walking along the Krabi pier is a great way to start your day. Facing east, you could catch the sunrise from the mangrove forest on the opposite side.

The famous crab sculptures and several decorations were placed along the pier and every morning, it welcomes dozens of morning runners.

On your way back to your hotel, grab a sandwich from the Family Mart nearby or quickly stop at a cafe or restaurant of your choice in the area.

It’s going to be a busy day so load up on coffee and grab that bite to eat and let’s get started!

A trip to Krabi wouldn’t be complete without an island-hopping tour. This very coast is surrounded by dozens of breathtaking uninhabited islands, crystal-clear waters and limestone hills. 

It’s extremely easy to book a tour in Krabi. The easiest way would be booking with your accommodation manager, who usually has some discounts.

Most tours you will find will either be for 4 islands or 7 islands.

While I was staying in Baan To Guesthouse in Krabi, I went on the 7 Islands Sunset Tour for 900 Baht (discounted from 1,500 Baht).

There are also different tours like the 4 Islands Tour (which is more well-known to visitors), kayaking tours, rainforest discovery tour, and more. 

There is honestly not much difference between the 7 Islands and 4 Islands tours.

Both are going to provide you with a full-day tour. The 4 islands tours will allow you to spend more time on each island. But you get to see more on the 7 islands tour. 

It’s all up to you whether you want to spend more time racing around between the different islands or relaxing on the beach!

For the 7 Islands Sunset Tour you can expect an itinerary similar to this: 

The tuk-tuk will pick you up at 12 pm and bring you to Ao Nam Mao Pier. There, you will register yourself and collect the snorkelling mask. 

You’ll then be directed onboard the longtail boat to start your day.

Throughout the day you will be visiting Tup Island, Thap Island, Chicken Island, Poda Island, Ma Tang Ming Island, Si Island, Phra Nang Beach, and Railay Beach (which technically isn’t an island).

You will get to walk between Tup Island and Thap Island , which is connected by the shallow beach on foot. You’ll also get to snorkel with the fish near Chicken Island , chill on Poda Island , visit Phra Nang Cave Beach and finally feast on a buffet dinner while watching the sunset in Railay Beach . 

Railay Beach is one of Thailand’s most famous. Framed by limestone cliffs and dense jungle, Railay Beach is popular among rock climbers and photographers.

For some tours on your Krabi itinerary, you may also get to go night snorkelling to see the phytoplankton before heading back for the fire show at the pier at around 8 pm.

An alternative option is booking a day tour to Koh Phi Phi . Koh Phi Phi is a great day trip, as it includes all the highlights like Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, and Maya Bay.

We would recommend spending a few days in Koh Phi Phi and taking your time seeing Maya Bay and the Koh Phi Phi town center.

But if you’re short on time and you’d rather visit Koh Phi Phi as a day trip from Krabi, you can do that. Any Krabi island hopping trip should include Koh Phi Phi for sure!

After returning back to the Krabi province after a busy day exploring the islands you will find the nightlife is starting to pick up. 

Krabi is home to countless bars, swarmed by foreign visitors every night to spend the last few hours of the day. If you’re staying in Ao Nang Beach, then, of course, you should spend the night there.

I never visited all of the bars in Krabi Town, but there’s one particular bar that I highly recommend – Booze Bar . The staff are friendly and they have live music and lovely vibes, all you could ask for in a perfect bar.

Day 3 – Caves and the Emerald Pool

Most of the accommodations in Krabi do include breakfast in your stay, but if they don’t, they probably have a café to fill your morning tummy.

Today, we’re gonna rent a motorcycle to have fun around the outskirts of Krabi. If it’s not your thing, it’s pretty easy to get a tuk-tuk in Krabi to get to wherever you want!

You can also save a bunch of time by booking today’s activities as part of an all-inclusive tour ! Perfect if you’d rather not run the risk of riding a motorcycle without insurance or a license when you visit Krabi.

You might want to know that this is way more physically demanding compared to Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint. 

I’m not trying to scare you. But trust me, you’ll be thanking yourself after reaching the top, enjoying the magnificent view of the temple sitting upon the ragged limestone hill.

At the base, there are several attractions like an artificial waterfall, cafeteria, and temples.

But the main attraction lies on the top connected by the 1,200-step staircases (Note: due to its physical demand this is not for all travellers.)  

Visiting in the morning is a better idea as the weather is usually cooler and the sunlight isn’t as harsh as the scorching tropical sun in the afternoon.

It takes around 20-40 minutes to get to the temple on top.

If you’re worried about dehydration, bring a water bottle with you. But note that there is a water station at the temple on top to refill your bottle. 

You’ll have to take off your shoes to visit around the temple, and you could easily spend 30 minutes up there on the view alone.

Also, be extra careful of the aggressive monkeys. Don’t touch them, and don’t go near a mom with babies. And definitely don’t feed them.

Over the years, Emerald Pool has become one of the must-visits in Krabi for no other reasons than it’s simply wonderful. Minerals in the water make the colour absolutely spectacular!

Located inside Thung Teao Forest Natural Park , there are several hiking trails surrounding the emerald pool too. But for now, let’s go straight for the pool.

Due to the tourist crowds, it’s wiser to pay this attraction a visit in the morning. So, it’s all up to you if you want to interchange this with Tiger Cave Temple.

With an entrance fee of 200 Baht, you are allowed to soak yourself in the crystal pond for as long as you want. The entrance closes at 4.30 pm.

Next up, Klong Thom Hot Springs is located near Emerald Pool, so I highly recommend you arrange both of these attractions on the same day on your Krabi itinerary.

The hot spring itself is extremely small and difficult to accommodate the number of visitors daily.

So, the authorities have decided to build an artificial pool near the hot spring and drain part of the water there for more people to enjoy.

The artificial pool is located before the authentic hot spring. So, if you’re visiting in the non-peak hours you could possibly enjoy the hot springs surrounded by gigantic tree roots.

It’s advised that you shouldn’t soak yourself in the hot springs for more than 20 minutes at a time.

The entrance fee to Klong Thom Hot Springs is 160 Baht, plus 10 Baht for your motorbike parking.

Chao Fah Night Market is one of the most enjoyable night markets in all of Thailand. Hundreds of tables and chairs are arranged by the pier, fenced by dozens of hawker stalls.

You can go over all the menus of every stall, but you won’t notice much difference other than the design. Choose the one you like, and order whatever you want, and they’ll arrange a seat for you. 

There are milkshake stalls there, which I recommend. (Krabi has much better milkshakes compared to Phi Phi Islands and Phuket, honestly.)

The highlights here are, of course, seafood, since Krabi is a coastal town. And they’re surprisingly affordable here too. You can get a big plate of clams for under 200 Baht!

You could also choose to attend the Blue Dragon Cabaret show , which is one of the more popular and most famous attractions in all of Thailand. 

There are other Ladyboy shows throughout Thailand but this is worth a watch on the last of your 3 days in Krabi itinerary.

Krabi Thailand City Guide

Now that you have a pretty good idea about what you’re going to do with your 3 days in Krabi itinerary, let’s help you travel to and around Krabi and find the best accommodation and food! 

The best time to visit Krabi and the rest of Southern Thailand is generally during the dry season, which spans from November to April.

During these months, Krabi experiences pleasant weather with clear skies, warm temperatures, and lower humidity. Travel guides would recommend these months for exploring the region’s renowned limestone cliffs, pristine beaches, and vibrant marine life.

While the peak tourist season occurs from December to February, offering optimal conditions for various outdoor activities like rock climbing, island hopping, and snorkeling, visitors can still enjoy nice weather in the shoulder months of November and April.

However, you should always check the local weather and be mindful of potential variations in weather patterns, as occasional brief rain showers can occur even during the dry season.

If Krabi is your first destination in Thailand, then there’s good news – there is an international airport in Krabi.

Inside the Krabi Airport, you’ll have to choose between taking the shared van or private transfer to your accommodation.

In my case, I took the shared van, which is surprisingly comfortable with leather seats and a well-air-conditioned interior.

It took around 30 minutes to reach our hostel, and yes, they drop you right at the doorstep. The price? Only 90 Baht!

In some cases where you’re travelling in Phuket first, then consider taking the shared van from the bus terminals to Krabi. There are two bus terminals in Phuket. 

It takes 3 hours to reach Krabi by bus. The only downside is that the bus terminal is rather far from most accommodations.

You might need a cab to get to your hotel, or you could walk, which I did! The shared van costs 140 Baht.

What if you’re staying in Ao Nang? Well, it’s pretty similar.

From the airport, catch the shared van to Ao Nang, which costs slightly more at 110 Baht. From Phuket, just tell the receptionist that you’re going to Ao Nang. It’s pretty straightforward as Ao Nang and Krabi are so close.

For travellers, the most popular place to stay would be near the Chao Fah Park Pier. There are plenty of shops, marts, hostels, and hotels – and of course, night markets.

Since there are not that many attractions inside Krabi Town, renting a motorcycle is the easiest way to visit the nearest attractions like the Emerald Pool, Ao Nang, Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint, and more.

Renting a motorcycle when you visit Krabi is almost effortless and is reasonably priced at around 200-250 Baht per day.

This price excludes petrol, which is pretty cheap as well. Chances are, you can rent a motorcycle from your hotel or hostel.

If a motorcycle is not your thing, then your options would be either private cabs, tours or GrabCar.

Tours are pretty common when you visit Krabi due to its popularity among Chinese, Russian and Korean tourists. So booking a tour is trouble-free.

Baan To Guesthouse definitely has one of the most strategic locations for those who visit Krabi. Within a 5-minutes’ walk, you’ll get to Chao Fah Night Market, the pier, and plenty of amazing cafes and restaurants, like 89 Café . 

I highly recommend this café, even though it’s a little pricey, the foods are top-notch and will never disappoint you.

They have one of the cheapest prices for double rooms in Krabi, and the on-site restaurant is perfect for breakfast. The host was extremely friendly as well, and we gladly rented her motorcycle for 250 Baht per day.

The rooms were basic, a little bit warm, so I suggest getting an air-conditioned room.

I hope you enjoyed reading this 3 days Krabi itinerary. Krabi Thailand is a wonderland for those who love nightlife. But it’s also perfect for those who enjoy travelling at a slower pace. 

In short, Krabi Thailand has something for everyone. Three days in Krabi are enough for most people to take in the essential attractions.

But if you’re opting to stay longer, Krabi is a great spot to sit back and relax!

Krabi Itinerary Pre-Travel Tips

Planning a trip to Krabi is relatively easy since the region is very tourist-friendly. Moreover, since Thailand is one of the cheapest countries in Asia , it’s a great destination for all kinds of travelers – whether you’re backpacking Thailand or visiting with friends or family.

However, Krabi covers quite a large area. As a consequence, there are a few things that you’ll need in place to guarantee a hassle-free Krabi vacation. Here are some travel tips and hacks to help you plan the perfect Krabi itinerary.   

• Search the  best hotels in Krabi . Krabi is quite a tourist hotspot, so rooms tend to fill up quickly. Make sure to book accommodation well in advance.  Also, expect steep prices during peak seasons.
• If you’re traveling with lots of luggage, or not comfortable catching a bus from the airport,   booking a private transfer  is an excellent alternative.
• Wifi is widely available at most tourist spots, restaurants, and hotels in Krabi. But if you prefer to have internet on the go, grabbing an eSIM is highly encouraged. By doing so, you’ll never have to worry about accessing maps, checking transport schedules, or planning your stops. Alternatively, pick up  pocket wifi while still in Bangkok . 
• Unfortunately, things can and do go wrong when you travel. Make sure you have travel insurance when visiting Thailand. I use SafetyWing .
• If you aren’t comfortable navigating Krabi on your own, o r perhaps traveling in a group, this Krabi private custom tour   allows you to see all the highlights without the headache of planning out a trip.

When to Visit Krabi, Thailand 

South Thailand has two very distinctive seasons, a dry season and a wet season. The  best time to visit Krabi is during the dry season , which runs from  November  through  March . During this time, you can expect pleasant temperatures and sunny blue skies – perfect for a Krabi beach getaway. 

Krabi’s off-season starts in April and runs through October . April is the hottest month in Krabi Province, and October sees the most rain during the year. Although it is possible to enjoy good weather during the wet season, frequent downpours aren’t uncommon. 

How to Get to Krabi, Southern Thailand

Krabi is a vast province in Southern Thailand and includes several popular destinations stretched over land and sea. These include Krabi Town ,  Ao Nang ,  Koh Phi Phi , and  beautiful Koh Lanta , to name just a few. 

Krabi International Airport is the main gateway to Krabi Province, and most likely the starting point of your Krabi itinerary. There are many daily flights from Bangkok to Krabi , as well as elsewhere in Thailand and Asia. If you haven’t booked a flight yet, Skyscanner is good place to compare airline prices and find cheap domestic or international flights. For those backpacking Thailand, this SEA transport guide includes lots of tips to help navigate your travels.

Once at the airport, it’s easy to access the rest of the province by land or sea. If you’re visiting the nearby islands or Railay Bay, you can take a ferry, speedboat, or long-tail boat to access them. Inland there is also an array of taxis, buses, tuk-tuks , and songthaews ready to transport you to all corners of Ao Nang and Krabi Town.

How to Get to Your Destination From Krabi Airport

If this is your first visit to Krabi, I recommend basing yourself in Ao Nang or Railay. From here, it’s easy to explore the rest of Krabi Province and come face-to-face with some of Thailand’s best landmarks . 

To get to  Ao Nang from the airport , it’s a good idea to  book a discounted transfer  in advance. Alternatively, take the  shuttle bus  (150 Baht) or order a  fixed-rate transfer  at the airport upon arrival (600 Baht).  Read my detailed guide on exactly how to get from Krabi Airport to Ao Nang for more tips.

The  fastest and easiest way to get to Railay  is to book a direct transfer with your hotel . Railay is c ompletely cut off by land, so it is slightly harder to get there . If you are traveling with lots of luggage , this will be the best way to get there. If that’s not an option, catch a long-tail boat to Railay at Ao Nang Private Boat Club  or  Ao Nam Mao Pier .

If you are headed to  Koh Lanta  or  Koh Phi Phi  directly from the airport and haven’t booked a transfer in advance, don’t worry. There are several stalls within the arrivals hall where you can quickly get this sorted out.

Krabi Itinerary Day 1: Explore Ao Nang

On your first day in Krabi, you’ll have ample town to settle in and orientate yourself to Ao Nang town.  

Ao Nang is a bustling little seaside town with plenty to entice travelers. Make sure to read my super detailed guide on top things to do in Ao Nang , as well as my guide on the best places to stay in Ao Nang on any budget. 

The very first thing you’ll want to do after arriving at the airport is to catch the local airport shuttle bus (150 Thai Baht) or grab a   transfer (600 Thai Baht) to get to your accommodation in Ao Nang town stress-free. (Pre-book a  shared transfer  or a  private transfer  here). 

Once you’ve settled in, it’s time to see what Ao Nang has on offer! Here are my top recommendations on what to do in Ao Nang on your first day in Krabi. 

Head to the Beach

Ao Nang is blessed with an incredible laid-back vibe, a bustling nightlife scene, great food, and gorgeous beaches. While most travelers flock to  Ao Nang Beach  to enjoy the sand and sea, a short stroll further you’ll find  Nopparat Thara Beach . 

Nopparat Thara is a great beach to chill for a few hours and the ideal spot if you want to get away from the crowds. The main road is lined with lots of cute beach bars and restaurants. So, if the heat gets too much for you or if you simply want to enjoy an ice-cold beer with a view, the options are endless!

Take a Sunset Cruise

Another fun thing to do in Ao Nang is to join a sunset cruise . It’s a great way to see Krabi’s spectacular coastline and scenery from the water while you sail past several of Krabi’s most famous islands. The best part? You can jump off the boat and discover the diverse underwater world along the way. 

Snack Your Way Through the Night Market

After watching the epic sunset, it’s time to head to the Ao Nang Night Market to feast on incredible treats. While Ao Nang’s food market isn’t nearly as big as the  night market in Krabi Town , it is one of the most popular night markets in Krabi and should not be overlooked. 

Ao Nang Night Market boasts a great selection of food, and you’ll find many vendors selling tasty Thai street food like pad Thai, Thai pancakes, sticky mango rice, fresh seafood, and all kinds of kebabs. 

Krabi Itinerary Day 2: Go Island Hopping

Krabi is blessed with 80 marvelous islands near its shores and, consequently, quite a hotspot for island hopping. That said, there are a few Krabi islands that you definitely shouldn’t miss on your Krabi 5 days itinerary. 

While it’s possible to rent a long-tail boat for a day to explore Krabi at your leisure, the easiest way to discover Krabi’s gems are on an organized tour. Make sure also to read my detailed guide on the best islands near Krabi for more tips on which islands not to miss.

Krabi 4 Islands Tour

You can’t visit Krabi without adding an island hopping tour to your 5 day Krabi itinerary !

The  Krabi 4 Islands tour  is the perfect opportunity to see some of Thailand’s most dreamy islands. The tour stops at four islands, namely Phra Nang Cave, Koh Tup, Koh Poda and Chicken Island. It’s a fun day trip to take, and there are lots of opportunities to snorkel, swim, or lie under a coconut tree. 

Taking this full day tour is a great way to see the best of the best and will allow you to maximize your time in Krabi.

Hong Island Tour

Another excellent day tour, I highly recommend, is  spending a day at Hong Island . Besides the exquisite beaches, Hong Island boasts crystal clear turquoise water full of marine life. The best part, you don’t need to go very deep to see all kids of bright-colored fish dashing past you. 

After you’ve explored the treasures below, make sure to take a hike through the island’s thick jungle or rent a kayak to explore the dreamy turquoise lagoon. 

Krabi Itinerary Day 3: Explore Railay Beach

When spending time in Krabi, a visit to Railay Beach is a huge must! Revered for its gorgeous beaches, stunning craggy cliffs, countless adventure-filled activities, and chilled out vibes, Railay is the perfect add-on to any Krabi itinerary. It’s also the perfect spot to experience outdoor adventures in Thailand !

What really sets Railay Beach apart from other gems in Krabi is its location. Since Railay is completely cut-off by land access, you’ll need to catch a long-tail boat to get here. Luckily, Railay is only a 10-minute long-tail boat ride from Ao Nang, making it easy to access.

While Railay is relatively small, there’s also plenty to do and see. From rock climbing and kayaking to hiking, swimming in a secret lagoon and much more! Read my super detailed guide on the most unmissable things to do in Railay for more tips. 

Krabi Itinerary Day 4: Head out to Koh Phi Phi

If you have 4 days in Krabi, you’ll have ample time to visit the dreamy Phi Phi islands . The islands are stunning and possibly the most beautiful islands in Asia !

If you just want to take it easy, head straight to the beach to enjoy the sand and sea. Many shops sell or rent snorkel gear, so it’s easy to explore the warm waters at your leisure. Afterward, kick back at one of the cute beach bars with a boozy cocktail as you wait for the epic sunset. 

More adventurous travelers shouldn’t miss the chance to catch the epic sunset from the Phi Phi Viewpoint. It’s a short hike taking no longer than 30 minutes, but prepare to break a sweat. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded panoramic views over the islands, sea, and cliffs. It’s truly magical! 

While it is possible to take a  day trip to Koh Phi Phi by speedboat , I suggest staying overnight or even longer if your Krabi itinerary is flexible.  By doing so, you can easily squeeze in a visit to the world-renowned Maya Bay, which was made famous by the movie “The Beach.” After being closed for several years for coral rehabilitation, Maya Bay opened back up to tourists in 2022. You can only visit on an  organized tour  now, and even though you can’t swim there anymore, it truly is one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever see in your life! 

Travel T ip:  If you’re visiting Koh Phi Phi during peak season, make sure to book accommodations well in advance. Koh Phi Phi is a popular destination, so hotels fill up rather quickly. I suggest staying somewhere central as some parts of the island is only accessible by a long-tail boat. The  Phi Phi Holiday Resort  is a great mid-range option, while  Phi Phi Coco Beach Resort   is an excellent choice if you’re looking for an upscale secluded stay. 

Krabi Itinerary Day 5: Unwind and Soak up the Vibes

On the last day of your Krabi 5 day itinerary, reward yourself for getting through Krabi’s top attractions on this Krabi itinerary! Here are my recommendations on what to do in Krabi on day 5.

Start your morning by learning the ins and outs of Thai cooking! 

Joining a cooking class in Krabi is a massive must while visiting Thailand, and also a fun way to master a new skill. During the cooking class, you’ll prepare seven local dishes of your choice and get lots of tips to take back home with you.  You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make Thai food, but don’t let that fool you, you’ll work up quite an appetite during this 3-hour cooking class !

Soak in a Hot Spring 

A great way to get away from the crowds is to head out to  Wareerak Hot Spring . Located near the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve, this is the perfect place to spend your last day in Krabi. The springs are surrounded by lush jungle, making it an excellent place for nature seekers. 

After a soak in the steamy pools, make sure to drop by the dreamy  Emerald Pool a bit further afield. It’s a short trek, and you’ll pass by gentle streams, waterfalls, and tropical plant life along the way.  If you still have energy, climb the 1,237 steps to the top of Tiger Cave Temple , where you’ll be rewarded with a bird’s-eye view over the Krabi basin.

Get a Thai Massage

No visit to Krabi, or Thailand, would be complete without experiencing a Thai massage. 

Massage parlors are practically on every corner, so it’s really easy to find one. If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, I suggest spending the afternoon at  Boossabakorn Spa  for a full pamper session. 

What to Wear in Krabi: Krabi Packing List

Since the weather in Krabi is mostly hot and humid, it’s best to pack light, breathable clothes. Besides the usual beachwear like swimwear, t-shirts, shorts, light dresses, and skirts, it’s a good idea also to pack flip-flops, sunglasses, and a hat.

Here are a few more essentials to add to your Krabi packing list:

• You’ll probably need a travel adapter for your visit to Krabi and the rest of Thailand.  This world travel adapter  is lightweight and covers more than 160 countries.
• Since you’ll probably be spending lots of time near the water, keep your phone and belongings safe from getting wet. Make sure to grab  this waterproof cellphone case  and  this handy dry bag  to enjoy a stress-free Krabi itinerary.

• Mosquitoes aren’t uncommon in Krabi, so make sure to pack DEET-free bug spray .

• The weather in Krabi can be somewhat unpredictable, especially during the wet season. Pack a  lightweight travel umbrella  that won’t weigh you down.
• Don’t forget your camera! I never travel without my  Olympus Mirrorless Camera , but if you prefer something more lightweight, bring a GoPro Hero . Just a heads-up — most of the islands near Krabi do not allow the use of drones . Make sure you do proper research before flying a drone in Thailand.

How many days are enough for Krabi? That’s a common question to ask. 

5 days in Krabi to make the best out of your time there, but if time is a constraint, then a minimum of 3 days in Krabi. 

On a trip to Krabi, there is so much to explore, from the dangerous-looking limestone cliffs at Railay beach to sparkling clear blue waters all around, there really is never a dull moment.

We do understand why you would want to know this since Krabi is not exactly as well known as its cousin Phuket Island. 

The truth is, it is actually safer to visit than Phuket or the capital Bangkok! 

It has a lower crime rate than both of them, and all need is a sensible head and takes a few precautions and you will be pretty safe! 

Needless to say, you wouldn’t want to be walking around with your new top-of-the-line Rolex watch right?

Being in the tropical zone, the weather in Krabi province is most often hot and humid. 

Most of the Krabi activities require you to be outdoors, so it would make sense to dress light, in singlets or lightweight cotton tee shirts.

Bermudas and shorts would make good sense, as would a bottle of sunscreen to protect yourself. 

Beachwear would be good pretty much everywhere, especially since you are likely to get onto one.

Be sure to find out which are the best Krabi beaches too!

So, when to visit Krabi? 

Since you are likely to be outdoors most of the time, it is important to know how the weather behaves during your trip. 

The climate in Krabi is tropical and has 2 distinct seasons, one being dry while the other being rainy.

It changes as the monsoon winds reverse direction, thus creating a high tourist season during the months of December all the way to April. 

This period is usually the driest and hence attracts the largest amount of visitors.

The temperature is hottest from April to May , sometimes reaching up to 36 degrees Celsius.

From May to October , the rain starts to set in and Krabi experiences the most rainfall in the months of September and October. 

This is the low season and things will be cheapest and you will find the highest availability of hotels this time of the year.

If you wish to avoid the crowds and don’t mind a bit of rain, think about visiting Krabi from June to August.

Heavy showers will be regular but they do not last long, which means that you will still be able to get a fair amount done. 

• Accommodation : 2790 THB, twin sharing, mid range
• Food : 310 THB, 2 meals, breakfast in the hotel
• Transport : Depends, but most will be included in tour packages. 100 THB should be sufficient for basic transport
• Total per person per day : 1805 THB, or US$58

Krabi is often compared to Phuket, kind of unfairly though. 

People tend to ask questions like, is Krabi cheaper than Phuket? Which town is a better one? Compare Krabi vs Phuket etc.

Having been to both places numerous times, we can say that Krabi somehow leaves a deeper impression on us.

People are nicer, more genuine, and more hospitable.

This could be due to the fact that Krabi does not receive as many visitors as Phuket, leaving them to be able to be themselves, instead of trying to think of ways to earn some money from the next guy.

They tend to have a more relaxed attitude, sabai sabai, they say. 

Anyhow, both are certainly worth visiting, and if you do visit Phuket, you can check out this Marriott resort we stayed in.

We have listed down the things to do in Krabi Thailand, and you can easily mix them up depending on whether you are searching for what to do in Krabi for 3 days, or 1 week in Krabi. 

Now, let’s dive into the itinerary for Krabi, shall we? 

Krabi 1 Day Itinerary: One Day In Krabi

On day 1, begin your vacation in Krabi leisurely, by spending time in the Ao Nang area.

This is also where you can find the main beach of Krabi, Ao Nang Beach . Before you go on, consider checking out this post that tells you where to stay in Ao Nang ! 

Tip: if you want to hang out on the beach, consider hiring a longtail boat to get you to Phra Nang Cave Beach , which is just 10 – 15 minutes away. It should cost you around 200 THB, but be warned. While it is a beautiful looking beach with some great views, it is pretty crowded.

Bonus tip: try out Nopparat Thara which is far lesser in crowds

If you are looking for a place where it is most lively and sees lots of action, this will be it. Plus, this will be your first sight of the Andaman Sea.

Over here, there are lots of shops where you can get just about anything you need, and you can chill out by the beach front. 

If you feel adventurous, go talk to the kayak operator near the end of the beach and rent one to go out to sea.

The views are pretty good from here, but we will tell you a better one in a moment.

Try out the street food here, and not forgetting Thai boat noodles, which is absolutely delightful. 

It’s a bowlful of umami goodness. 

On this day, you can take the opportunity to visit the Ao Nang Elephant Sanctuary . 

It is well run by a group of dedicated caretakers and the elephants are well taken care of. 

These elephants used to work in logging industries and riding camps, but are now rescued to spend their days in the sanctuary.

You can get your tickets at one of the many tour operators along the streets of Ao Nang, or you can get them here too for your convenience.

At night, the bars come alive and there are night markets to be explored here, although they are not as good as the ones in Krabi town, which we will explore more later.

So take it easy on this day and unwind with a drink.

One of the best places to do that will be in a bar or restaurant along Ao Nang beach, where you can even find a seat on the sand itself.

2 Days Krabi Itinerary: 2 Days In Krabi

On this day, you will set out for some adventure. Rock climbing!

Take a trip out to Railay Beach , quite possibly the best beach in all of Thailand, or at least Krabi.

Yes, that’s a big statement, but you will understand when you get there.

Surrounded by huge limestone karst and crystal clear waters, the whole area looks like it came out of an award-winning picture.

How to get to Railay Beach from Ao Nang?

There is no land transport that can take you there, so you will have to check with the operator along Ao Nang beach. 

It is a small booth located along the southern end.

The cost is 100 baht each way and they will set sail for Railay Beach once they have enough people.

If you decide to go rock climbing, we recommend the operator that we used, Real Rocks Climbing School , or try out the one below.

They offer pickups from your hotel (only for Ao Nang or Krabi Town) so that makes life so much easier.

First, you will be sent to their school, which is a small shop located near the jetty. 

You will then be handed your equipment, which includes the shoes and chalk bag. 

This is also where you can deposit your bag. Just bring along your essentials like money and shades.

Once everyone is gathered, you will set off to the jetty, where you will be taken by a boat to Railay Beach, and a short walk will lead you to the climbing spot.

Beginners need not worry, as both of us had never tried it before but we still managed.

You will not be pressured to go higher up, so you set your own pace. 

Our rock climbing guide was super funny but professional at the same time, and we learned all the basics from knot tying to belaying from him.

When you climb to the top, and you turn around to face the Andaman Sea, that feeling is exhilaration and peace combined in one.

Seriously, if there is only one activity to do in Krabi, this is it. We loved it so much!

You can choose either a half or full-day tour, and we suggest the half-day option if you feel that you are not up for climbing for hours. 

It is pretty tough, especially if you have never tried it before.

For the rest of the day, you can choose to either return with the group, or you might want to stay in Railay Beach for a night. 

Take note though, that prices for hotels here are more expensive than on the “mainland”.

Here’s a secret tip: for a similar experience without the crowds and cheaper accommodation, go to Tonsai Beach . Or stay there for a great experience.

Whether you choose to return on the same day or stay the night, the next activity is going to be lots of fun too.

As if you haven’t got your blood pumped up enough already, we are taking you shooting!

Across the road, about 300 meters to the left of the climbing school, you will find Krabi Shooting Range . (Alternatively, you can also visit Railay Shooting Range if you plan your own transport. There is also Ao Nang Shooting Range back in the city)

This is where you can display your marksmanship skills and go trigger happy. 

There are lots of different guns to choose from, from handguns to long rifles, and the range is well managed by a professional team.

Be warned though, that the price tag on this activity is not cheap, with each bullet starting at around 100 baht each. 

Expensive, yes. But worth it if this is your first time and you want to try out something different.

Krabi Itinerary 3 Days

First real water activity today, in the form of kayaking at Ao Thalane , one of our favourite places to go in Krabi. 

It is located in the southern part of the sub-district Ao Luk, and is roughly 50 minutes away by car from Ao Nang. 

Ao Thalane, or Thalane Bay, is today widely regarded as sea kayaking central of Krabi. 

Not only that, but this off-the-beaten-path small town also boasts of the best mangrove swamps for exploration on kayaks.

So take your pick from 2 different types of experiences.

If you choose the sea option, you will find here a really tranquil opportunity to relax and be with nature, paddle into caves, and stop at the foot of majestic limestone cliffs for photo memories. 

If you choose the mangrove option, you will paddle through dense vegetation, alongside kingfishers and macaques who will be your companion.

Both choices are equally awesome!

Depending on the time you arrive, the tide can make a difference to the entire landscape too, so be sure to ask your guide about it.

When the tour is over, request for your driver to drop you off at Krabi Town , as this is where you will spend the rest of the evening, and one of the best free things to do in Krabi!

To get in close to the hospitality of the locals, Krabi Town is where you should be at. 

Known as a market town, in the evenings, this is the best place in Krabi to visit the night market where you can get super delicious street food.

Strolls along the Krabi Town riverside are highly encouraged!

Its laid-back charm is sure to keep you wanting to explore more, and you don’t get the sense that the locals are very much affected by the presence of tourists. 

It is quite unlike some of the other popular places where you definitely FEEL like a tourist, from the touts to the hecklers from “local” restaurants.

There are many things to do in Krabi Town, so you have lots of chances to expand on your visit here.

Just a short distance away, check out the Wat Kaew Korawaram , or the Wat Kaew Temple. 

It is a stunning design and serves as an important landmark for the locals.

Being devout Buddhists, the Thais come here regularly to pray and give offerings.

As a visitor, you will be amazed by the ornate dragon designs and a grand staircase, and be prepared to soak in the serene atmosphere.

Besides the Wat Kaew temple, here are some other choices that you should check out, or if you stay the night at Krabi Town.

Krabi Tiger Cave Temple – Also known as Wat Tham Suea, it is a majestic Buddhist temple built high up on the limestone cliffs. 

The hike up is 1237 steps up. Know your fitness levels and make sure to bring water and take breaks during this strenuous walk. 

Khao Khanab Nam Mountains – An icon of Krabi, the 2 limestone peaks stand out among the landscape, with a river dissecting them. 

This is where you can come to experience the more natural beauty of Krabi and take hikes along the trail.

Up to this point, the activities here are diverse enough to if you have a Krabi 3 days trip. Read on if you have planned a longer trip!

Krabi Itinerary 4 Days

A lot of people are made aware of this gem of an island when the movie The Beach was released. More specifically, Maya Bay . Add this on if you have 4 days in Krabi. 

There are 2 main islands, Koh Phi Phi Don (bigger and main island) and Koh Phi Phi Le (smaller), and we will talk more about Don here.

With white sand beaches and turquoise waters, it is picture perfect and the Phi Phi islands have become one of the main places to visit when in Krabi or Phuket. (the islands are easily accessible from both towns)

However, the Thai government has shut down Maya Bay since 2018 due to over-tourism.

The massive hordes of tourists left long-lasting damages to the bay and the government has done the right thing to shut it down and let it recover. 

Even though you can’t disembark on the bay itself today, boat operators will still bring you round to the entrance for a photo op. 

But frankly, there are many other wonderful spots to discover, so we would say consider others too. 

First up, check out Pileh Bay Lagoon . which is in our opinion superior to Maya Bay. 

Stop here for a swim in the crystal clear water and admire the towering limestone karst surrounding you. 

Rent snorkeling equipment to have a better view of the world underwater.

And lastly, do not miss making the hike up to the 3 viewpoints in Koh Phi Phi.

It takes about half an hour to walk up the trail and you will be rewarded with the best views you can possibly find in Krabi.

Search for the Reggae Bar in Tonsai Village and look out for signs of “Viewpoint 1”, as well as the Tsunami Evacuation Route. 

You will know you are in the right place when you see a steep flight of stairs, which is the toughest part of the hike. 

An entrance fee of around 30 THB will be collected before you can proceed.

While a day trip here in Koh Phi Phi is one of the most rewarding activities you can do in Krabi, we do suggest that you stay a night if possible. 

You certainly do not want to miss this if you plan a vacation in Krabi!

5 days Krabi Itinerary

Love Koh Phi Phi? 

Then you need to continue your island hopping adventure by heading over to Koh Lanta, which is more exotic and remote, and is simply a bliss to visit. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand hands down. 

There are ferries from Koh Phi Phi to get you to Koh Lanta in 60 minutes, and you can find the schedules here.

Beaches will be the order of the day, and you can find many nice ones here, such as Phra Ae Beach, or Long Beach, Relax Bay, Klong Kong and Klong Dao Beach.

At Klong Dao, you will find the whitest powdery sand and be sure to dip in the water as the waters here are calm and perfect for swimming.

While you are on Koh Lanta, you should also check out Baan Saladan , the centre of activity of the island. 

It is here where you can find lower cost accommodation, since most of the resorts on this island are more on the luxurious scale.

And it is really interesting to be able to find stilt wooden houses here, and they all add to the charm of Koh Lanta. 

From Koh Lanta, it is easy to embark on day trips to nearby islands to see more of its surroundings. Keep your Koh Lanta itinerary free and easy as the way it should be.

6 days in Krabi Itinerary

Back on the mainland, day 6 takes you to the southern part of Krabi. 

The Klong Thom Hot Springs is located within a jungle reserve park, far away from the sounds of the city. 

There are several “hot tubs” formed by the crashing water, and they measure up to 40 degrees Celsius. 

The water in these pools is mineral-rich and is said to heal your body and strengthen it too. 

Coming from deep underground thermal springs that are in volcanic chambers, you really must make your way here to enjoy the soothing warm waters and relax away.

Once you had your fill of the warm water, wade down to the stream nearby for a perfect way to cool down. 

Next, make your way to another water spot: the Emerald Pool , or Sa Morakot to the locals.

This stunner is located within the same national park as Klong Thom and is about 1 hour away. 

Emerald Pool got its name from the color of the water, which is really quite amazing. 

Visitors can come here for a dip, and while the water is not warm like those in the hot spring, they are pretty comfortable during the day. 

From the entrance of the sanctuary, you will need to walk around 800 meters to arrive at the pool, and along the way, you get a chance to look at the huge diversity of flora and fauna. 

After Emerald Pool, you may want to venture further upstream for a look at the Blue Pool, but swimming is not allowed here, as there is quicksand around the area.

Be very careful when you approach and be sure to be with a companion at the very least.

7 days in Krabi Itinerary

Ao Nang hiking. Probably not something common on most tourists’ plans, but definitely well worth trying. 

Located not far from Ao Nang beach, this Krabi hiking trail is somewhat remote, and you will notice that on your way there.

This is good news, since you won’t have to share it with others.

To begin hiking Tab Kak Hang Nak , you will see a donation box at the entrance, where a 20 THB donation would be sufficient and appreciated. There are no entrance fees otherwise.

Before attempting the hike, you got to stock up on water, at least 2 liters per person, and maybe a light snack. 

Mosquito spray would be useful, so would a towel for wiping perspiration. 

This is Krabi, and the humidity and the heat, especially since this trail is within a jungle, trapping all that nasty air. So you’ve been warned!

At the top, your eyes will feast on what can be described as the most spectacular view of Krabi: the entire bay with its limestone karst jutting out of the water, and the golden sand beaches below. 

Just stunning.

If you are feeling a bit brave, step out (at your own risk!) to the tongue sticking out of the cliffside. 

That’s the best place for a photo op. 

Reminds us of Trolltunga in Norway, one of our bucket list places .

This is one of the best hiking spots in Krabi, with the best views of Krabi, and is suitable for most people, so make it a must on your Krabi to-do list!

It can get a bit tough, so come in good shoes and pace yourself. 

You should be able to reach the top in 2 hours, and allow 4 – 5 hours for a round trip since you will want to spend time taking photos and admiring the vastness of the surroundings. This is the last part of your Krabi itinerary.

The locations mentioned here can be somewhat difficult to get to since the public transport system in Krabi province is not exactly that developed. 

The best way to visit these spots will be through hiring a driver for the day, or renting a scooter and driving there on your own. 

They are easily found in Ao Nang and Krabi town, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding one.

Or you can consider the numerous Krabi tours, where all logistics are taken care for you.

Within Ao Nang or Krabi Town, our advice would be to walk, and if you do need to travel longer distances, try the tuk tuk or taxi, or you could be more adventurous and flag down a song taew. 

That would be the best way to Krabi Town from Ao Nang and vice versa.

In summary, prices are as follows: 

• Tuk Tuk –  based on negotiation with the driver
• Song Taew, or local bus – 50 baht to get from Ao Nang to Krabi Town; shorter distances will cost less
• Motorcycle taxi – between 20 – 50 THB per person
• Local taxi – negotiate with them; usually 2500 THB for a full day
• Rent motorcycle – 250 THB per day

Where to stay in Krabi?

In the Krabi itinerary we have suggested, there are several places where you can spend the night, depending on the location and the activity.

Choosing the right place may be confusing since there are tons of options, but don’t worry. 

We have narrowed down the best Krabi hotels for you, so all you need to do is choose one that is suitable for you. 

Budget: Phu Pha Aonang Resort & Spa

While most of the activities in Krabi revolve around the daytime, there is some stuff that you can check out at night too. 

Krabi does not exactly have a booming nightlife, but it is certainly not lacking in bars and pubs for drinks. 

Try out the Ao Nang area and Soi RCA Krabi. 

Check out the Krabi night market for a local experience, you may even find yourself enjoying the live music at the open mic right smack in the middle of the night market!

There are many fun things to do in Krabi, but for a good laugh, watch the Blue Dragon Cabaret, the most famous one in Krabi.

Incredible Krabi Itinerary – 5 Days in Paradise

Are you planning a trip to Krabi and not quite sure where to go? Keep reading our Krabi itinerary and we will help you to make the most of an area that may well be the highlight of your Thailand adventure.

I have had some of my best ever travel experiences in Krabi, it is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand and some of the most spectacular seascapes that you will find anywhere in the world.

Throw in some interesting temples for a bit of culture and you have one of Thailand’s most enticing regions.

Where is Krabi?

Krabi is both a city and a province in southern Thailand. As a result, the term ‘Krabi’ gets bandied around a lot in tourist circles with various different meanings.

This can be a bit confusing for first-time visitors who have just heard that they should definitely go to Krabi. The chances are that whoever said this to them wasn’t referring to the town but they could have meant one of the thousands of great places in the province.

To clear things up here is a handy guide to some of the key destinations in Krabi:

Krabi Town : A fairly typical Thai town with a good range of tourist facilities but no real attractions to speak of in the town itself. There is no beach here but the riverside location is pleasant and there is a good night market.

Krabi Province : A fairly large province that covers areas of mainland Thailand and numerous islands in the Andaman Sea. The region is home to some spectacular scenery and some of the most famous sights in Thailand like James Bond Island, Railay Beach and Koh Phi Phi.

Ao Nang : A tourist-oriented town on the coast. There is a beach here and a ferry port making it a popular base for tourists to go on excursions around the province. The town sometimes gets mistaken for Krabi town which is around 20 minutes away.

Koh Phi Phi : Two stunning karst islands with tall steep cliffs rising out of the waters. Koh Phi Phi Leh is the uninhabited island made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach. Koh Phi Phi Don is much bigger and almost equally beautiful but it is very busy with day-trippers and partying backpackers.

Koh Lanta : A large island with huge long beaches and a relaxed vibe.

Railay Beach : A spectacular beach on the mainland that is flanked by huge cliffs. Only accessible by boat.

Phang Nga Bay :  Home to the famous James Bond Island , Phan Ngan Bay is one of the world’s most incredible landscapes with hundreds of rocky karst formations rising up out of the sea. 

Krabi Itinerary

We have written this as a 5 day itinerary but the area has a lot to offer and you could easily spend more days in here by adding extra beach days or by doing more of the tours mentioned below.

For this itinerary we suggest that you stay on the mainland in either Ao Nang or at Railay beach, depending on whether you prefer access to all the amenities of Ao Nang or if you would prefer to stay right by the beach.

Krabi Itinerary Day 1

Railay beach.

For your first day in Krabi, we suggest heading out to Railay Beach . You can only get here by boat but it is only around 10 minutes from Ao Nang. This gives it the atmosphere of being on an island although you are actually on a peninsula of the mainland.

The beach here is spectacular, with limestone cliffs all around, gorgeous white sand and caves to explore.

You could easily spend the day here relaxing on the beach and taking a dip in the clear blue waters, but if you fancy a bit more action you could have a go at rock climbing up those amazing cliffs , float over the waters in a kayak or explore underwater by snorkelling or diving. All these activities can be arranged at the beach or better still, book them in advance here.

Whilst you are at the beach be sure to explore over to the equally beautiful but less busy Ao Phra Nang beach which is about a 15 minute walk away. You may also be intrigued to have a look at the cave shrine where there are more penis statues than you can shake a stick at.

If you are looking for the ultimate cave experience you might like to eat at The Grotto. The setting is a sensational underworld experience but the prices are sky high. You have been warned!

1 Day Krabi Itinerary

If you only have one day in Krabi (Why?? You should stay here longer!!), or just like to see as much as you can, we suggest taking the 4 islands tour .

This tour will take you to Phra Nang Cave, Tup Island, Chicken Island and Poda Island. It gives you a really good taste of what this area has to offer in one bitesize trip by speedboat.

Krabi Itinerary Day 2

Phang nga bay.

On day 2 of our itinerary, we suggest taking a boat trip out to explore the wonderful karst islands of Phang Nga Bay.

There are literally hundreds of them dotting the sea and it is an extraordinary and beautiful place to explore. You boat tour will include a stop at the famous James Bond Island where you can buy a few trinkets as a souvenir.

I am not sure how many of the thousands of people that come here have any interest the link to the James Bond film but it has become the main way to market tours to this area. It is definitely worthwhile regardless of whether you are a Bond fan or have never seen the film.

Your tour will also take you to a fascinating sea gypsy village and some tours include the option to spend a little time kayaking or to visit Koh Hong.

Krabi Itinerary Day 3

Tiger cave temple and emerald pool.

After a day at sea yesterday with thought that a good itinerary for day 4 would be to stick to the mainland and visit the Emerald Pool and climb up to the Tiger Cave temple.

It is best to get an early start to visit the Emerald Pool before they get too crowded. The waters in this hot spring are mineral rich, giving them healing properties. They also change colour depending on the time of day that you visit.

A visit to the Tiger Cave temple is an altogether more physical experience. To reach this temple you must first negotiate the 1237 steps that guide you up the mountain. When you get to the top you will be rewarded with some fine views over the incredible Krabi scenery. The temple here is home to a massive golden Buddha statue.

Fancy another hike?

If you have more days in the area and are looking for more things to do in Krabi,  then you could hike along the Hang Nak Mountain trail. This trek will take you about 2 hours to get to the top of the mountain. It is totally worth it for the bird’s eye view that you get of the surrounding scenery.

Along the way you will pass waterfalls, streams and viewpoints, making it a very rewarding trek and keep an eye out for the local wildlife along the way. It is a trek that most people in decent shape should be able to manage but be sure to take lots of water along as it will be hot!

Krabi Itinerary Day 4

Visit koh phi phi.

For your fourth day in Krabi we suggest taking a tour by speed boat to the Phi Phi islands. These are quite possibly the most beautiful islands in the region and are justifiably known throughout the world.

The two islands rise high and impossibly steep out of the sea to create a fabulous landscape of limestone cliffs, crystal clear waters and perfect beaches. The speedboat tour will give you the chance to visit all of the best spots on the two islands with stops for snorkelling and swimming along with time spent on the beach.

At the moment it is not possible to visit Maya Bay ( ‘The Beach’ ) as the Thai government have closed it to give the environment a chance to recover from the effects of over tourism. This is definitely a good thing and a stop on this super crowded beach was never a highlight of the tour anyway.

It is just such a great tour that will leave you smiling, amazed that such beautiful places exist and with memories to last a lifetime.

Krabi Itinerary Day 5

Day 5, time for a bit more adventure!! One of the best things to do in Krabi is to spend some time out on the water in a kayak. You can do this from the beach in Ao Nang or Railay Beach, but we think that it is worth heading out on a guided tour to some truly spectacular locations.

One of the most popular trips is to head to Ao Thalane. Here you can admire more incredible karst cliffs as you wind your way through mangroves, finding hidden beaches between the massive rock faces.

Another option is to head to Hong Island for a day of kayaking. I have done this and rate it as one of my best ever travel experiences. The island here is absolutely stunning with perfect beaches to explore and hidden areas that can only be reached by kayak.

Best Hotels in Krabi

For this Krabi trip planner, we suggest a base on the mainland with day trips out to explore the surrounding islands and attractions. 

We recommend that you choose to base yourself in either Ao Nang, Railay Beach or Klong Muang.

Ao Nang is the most convenient option and will give you the widest range of tours due to being based in a town near to the boat port.

Evenings here can be spent choosing from a wide array of bars and restaurants including a number of international chains. There is a night market for cheap and interesting eats and also for souvenir shopping.

If you fancy a bit of partying head to Soi RCA which is Krabi’s main party street. It is lined with bars playing music, the vibe is fairly chilled and friendly rather than full-on hedonism.

If you would like to stay in the town, but still on the beach, Krabi La Playa Resort is a great option. with really comfortable, big rooms and tasty breakfasts. It isn’t quite on the beach but it is just a short walk to get there.

Railay Beach : Here you trade the convenience of Ao Nang for an out and out dream location. We think that it is a fair trade-off and it is still only 10-minute boat ride to Ao Nang if you need to get there.

Staying here will cost you a bit of a premium and your choice of where to eat and drink is fairly narrow. But….that view!

If you want to stay somewhere really special head for Rayavadee Hotel on Railay Beach . The location is unbelievable and the rooms and service here are exceptional.

All of the rooms are pretty amazing in luxury bungalow style accommodation, they have family suites and bungalows with private pools. Although the main pool is pretty spectacular in itself.

When to go to Krabi

There are district wet and dry seasons in the Krabi area and generally, the best time to visit is between November and March. April should still be fine, but it is starting to get really hot. May is definitely off-season and a lot of places will be very quiet (and cheap!).

In the off-season, the seas could be rough and you may have trouble catching boat tours or ferries between the islands. In the rainy season, you might just have one or two hours of rain per day, or you could have a complete washout. You may also get lucky with some perfectly lovely days.

How to get to Krabi

Krabi has an international airport with flights from a few neighbouring countries as well as plenty of internal flights within Thailand.

From your home country, you might need to look at flying into the bigger airports at Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Phuket before continuing on to Krabi.

There are very frequent flights to Bangkok and Chiang Mai so you can easily combine Krabi with other areas of Thailand when you are planning your itinerary. For an idea of how to spend your time in Thailand check out our 10-day itinerary .

Krabi is also easy to reach by land with buses from around the country and Malaysia all calling in at Krabi town. By sea, most of the islands are well connected by speedboat and ferry services. Ao Nang is the mainland port that you are most likely to use.

Krabi vs Phuket

People planning a trip to Thailand often ask whether they should go to Phuket or Krabi. For us, it is Krabi every time. It is more beautiful, more relaxed and cheaper.

Phuket is nice enough but it is the place to go on a package tour or a lad’s holiday whilst Krabi has something for everyone and is generally a more spectacular location to spend your vacation.

Having said this we often fly into Phuket Airport and spend a couple of days by the beach in Naiyang before getting the ferry to Ao Nang or Koh Lanta.

Both Phuket and Krabi offer similar options to get out to the islands of the Andaman Sea so if you have your heart set on Phuket I am sure you will still have a great trip!

Where to go Next?

If you have more time in Thailand then we definitely recommend that you spend more time in the Krabi area. The Andaman Sea lends itself perfectly to island hopping so why not spend a few days on the paradise islands off the coast.

We are flying from London – yes long flight and reaching phuket in night . We are there for 5 full days after that and wanted to split between phuket and Krabi . 2 days Phuket and 3 days Krabi. Would you recommend that ?

Key things in Krabi seem – Railay, Phi Phi and Hot Springs. I was planning to do Phang Nga Bay speed boat tour ( this covers James Bond Island ) from Phuket and have one day to enjoy phuket local and patong nightlife.

Hi, That sounds like a great plan. 2 days Phuket and 3 days Krabi sounds like the best way to split your time. The only other thing you might want to consider is staying the middle night in Phi Phi rather than doing it as a day trip. Pha Nga Bay is equally good from Phuket or Krabi. Enjoy your trip!

Krabi’s weather is typically hot days and cool breezy evenings, and the island doesn’t have many months of heavy rainfall. Monsoon season is during Krabi’s summer,  between July to October. Be cautious of the ocean during this time, and be sure to book your flights with the heavy wind and rainfall in mind!

If you want to visit when there aren’t as many tourists as there are during peak season, then April to June would be the best time. Krabi’s public transport system consists of tuk-tuk (motorcycle taxi) drivers, local buses (known as song-taew ), and regular taxis. As for the local taxis and buses, they can be easily waved down just like a US taxi, and provide a great way to get around at a good price.

Of course, traveling by sea is also a must-do travel experience whilst in Krabi. You can find long-tail boats, speed boats, and ferris at most docks within the province. This is an excellent way to feel the wind, take in the beachscapes, and get from A to B quickly.

Walking in Krabi is also a lovely way to experience the authentic atmosphere and environment of the villages and towns. To begin your time in Krabi, we have a cultural landmark remarkable history. Also known as Tiger Cave Temple , Wat Tham Sua is situated near the charming and welcoming Krabi Town. Surrounding this mesmerizing temple is a dense forest of ancient trees, most older than 100 years. These lovely trees sprout from the mountainscape, where a vast amount of unusual caves can be found and admired.

The site is known for being a meditation centre, as well as the home to stone tools, pottery remains, and the mold for making Buddha footprints. In the main temple cave, you will come across photos of internal organs and split caverns- which is very bizarre, but they are there as a way for the monks to remember the temporary nature of the body.

The biggest feature of  Wat Tham Sua temple complex is the 1,272 step climb up a scenic limestone tower. Once at the top, you will see the awe-inspiring “Footprint of the Buddha”. This is a stone carving said to be from Guatama Buddha himself. The site is not only an iconically spiritual one but also offers breathtaking panoramic views of Krabi’s countryside and the Andaman sea.

Insider Tip: The hike can be quite strenuous if you aren’t much of a hiker, so pack water and a backpack full of refreshments, as well as comfortable shoes.

Day 1/Stop 2 – Ao Luk Mangroves

Once the swamp dried out, the layers of shells that were left behind created huge rock slabs. These rock slabs are now humorously called “shelly limestone,” and they rest on layers of lignite .

Krabi Night Market

Embark on a journey and humbly explore the old village of Koh Klang. The village is a mere 26 square-meters, and it is entirely made up of indigenous plant life, rivers, canals, mangrove forests, and peaceful beaches. The inhabitants of this island are natives, and they live in a way that has not been tainted by the west, maintaining their roots and keeping to the ways of the old.

The name Koh Klang means “middle island,” and it has been given this name because it is between two wide estuaries. On the east, you will find the Krabi River, where it will take you a short five-minute ferry ride to get back to Krabi.

Most tourists don’t go to Koh Klang. This is because it is native land and does not offer a lot in the way of mainstream tourism with no major attractions or must-see sites. The only exciting sightseeing wise will be of some amazing rural landscapes. However, it does offer something that other places in Krabi may not- an authentic looking glass into the ways of the ancient Thai natives.

The people of Koh Lang live simply as a way of life, and they enjoy the harmony and simplicity of it all. This is a wonderful way to appreciate other lifestyles, and broaden our understanding of cultures and people.

Mu Ko Lanta National Park

• The Mu Ko Lanta National Park is a huge part of Krabi’s nature conservation!
• The park was established in 1990, so it is relatively new.
• Entrance fee is 200 ($6,26) for adults and 100 ($3,13) for children

Mu Ko Lanta National Park consists of several gorgeous Thai islands! The park boasts rugged hills that roll over the Andaman sea, covered in thriving plant life and providing spellbinding views.

You can venture into the dense rainforests and discover the neverending bliss of Krabi’s vegetation, breathing in air that is thick with life and an earthy scent. You can even find massive mangrove forests, as the Mai Ngam, South Mai Ngam, and Ngu islands are absolutely covered in them!

Taking a turn for the unusual, you may also come across nomadic sea gypsies called the Chao Le that live in the forests and islands of the national park. They are said to set boats adrift during the full moon of June and November, as it is a tradition of theirs to draw in good luck.

Mainly what you’ll find during your great adventure at Mu Ko Lanta National Park is outstanding and private white sand beaches, jaw-dropping viewpoints, hidden walking trails, and some incredibly impressive ancient caves.

The province of Krabi is renowned for being a safe place for both extensive and short visits. The locals are incredibly friendly, and most travelers don’t experience any kind of threats or mishap during their stay. With this in mind, we would still love to cover some safety tips in our Krabi itinerary to make sure that everything goes smoothly during your island adventure!

Pickpockets are all over the world, and Krabi is no exception. Be sure to watch your belongings and don’t let strangers get too friendly with you out of the blue. This should not be a major issue, but it is something to remember and stay cautious of.

Of course, behave sensibly when partying and when walking about at night. Keep friends and travel companions close when going places on foot at night, and stay away from suspicious alleyways.

Although crime happens everywhere, the main danger in Krabi doesn’t come from the people, but more from mother nature herself. Beach safety is something to be aware of, as the ocean can become rough during the monsoon season from May to October.

Otherwise, rip tides aren’t lethal but are better to be avoided. Remember to also be careful of mooring boats! Thankfully, Krabi’s marine life species aren’t poisonous, so there are no threats from the creatures of the sea.

How to get to Krabi

With direct flights from Bangkok , Chiang Mai , and Phuket, as well as cities in other Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia, flying to Krabi is easy and fairly inexpensive. The airport is located about 40 minutes from Ao Nang Beach, so if you are staying within walking distance from the beach, expect a drive once you arrive.

There are plenty of shuttle buses and taxis at the airport you can catch once you arrive, so there is no need to schedule transportation in advance. However, if you decide to do so, you can pre-arrange transportation here .

Additionally, you can also take an overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani similar to the sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai , and then catch a bus to Krabi. If you book the sleeper train to Surat Thani, we would recommend spending a day or two in Khao Sok National Park before taking the bus or a private transfer to Krabi.

No trip to Krabi would be complete without a visit to Railay Beach .

Accessible only by boat due to its limestone cliffs, Railay Beach offers stunning scenery, calm, shallow water that is perfect for families with young children, soft sand, beachside restaurants, and rock climbing opportunities for the adventure seekers. (More on that below.) 

You could spend a full day relaxing at Railay Beach. From Ao Nang Beach, catch a longtail boat for 200 baht a person to Railay. If you prefer the serenity of the beach after the crowds leave at low tide, you could even stay at one of the beachfront properties at Railay Beach .

Go Island Hopping

Keep in mind if you want to visit Tiger Cave Temple, this is a strenuous hike that requires a decent fitness level to reach the top. 

You’ll also want to bring temple-appropriate coverings – like a shoulder covering or elephant pants. You can borrow clothing at the temple for a small donation, as well.

Explore Phra Nang Beach and Princess Cave

Phra Nang Cave Beach , accessible by a path from Railay Beach East or by kayak or longboat from Railay West, is best known for its cave that holds a shrine once created by fishermen and locals to the spirit of the Princess of Phranang Cave. 

The shrine is filled with flowers and phallus-shaped lingam gifts carved from wood. The eye-catching wooden offerings are said to bring prosperity and fertility to the earth. 

Aside from the cave, the beach itself boasts turquoise waters, powdery sand, and cave overhangs, making a wonderful destination for beachgoers looking for a unique cove to spend some time. 

Swim in Emerald Pool and Admire the Blue Lagoon

The Thung Teao Forest Natural Park , located in the southwestern part of the Krabi Province, is home to the famous Emerald Pool. Here you can take a dip in the emerald-hued, mineral-rich waters, surrounded by lush forests. 

Then hike through the jungle to the Blue Lagoon, and marvel at the overhanging trees with their massive roots extending across the bright blue water.

The path is well laid out but can be steep and somewhat rickety at times. It can be a challenging hike, particularly for elderly visitors or those with less physical endurance. 

Another word of warning, the monkeys have been known to snatch hikers’ belongings. Don’t feed them or try to pet them, as they are wild animals and can become aggressive.

Get a Thai Massage

Walk along any main street in Krabi or Ao Nang and you will certainly pass no fewer than a dozen massage parlors. Do not pass up the opportunity to get a Thai Massage while you are there! Starting around 200 baht ($7 USD) you can get a soothing and rejuvenating 1-hour massage.

The massage’s centuries-old techniques, rooted in Thai healing traditions, not only ease physical ailments but also provide a tranquil respite for the mind. By applying pressure, stretching your body, and massaging your muscles, your masseuse will leave you feeling relaxed and restored. 

We loved it so much, we went twice! And for those with kids, our 8-year-old was able to get a massage alongside us. It truly is one of the best things to do in Krabi, Thailand.

Go Rock Climbing

Krabi is a popular destination for rock climbing enthusiasts – offering a seemingly endless number of vertical challenges on its iconic cliffs.

Although we didn’t scale the cliffs overlooking the brilliant blue water, we enjoyed watching daring climbers embark on their climbing expedition from the comfort of the sand at Railay Beach. 

If you’re up for the physical challenge and adrenaline rush, you can book a half-day guided rock climbing tour suitable for either beginners or intermediate climbers ages 5 and up.

Other things to do in Krabi

If you have additional time and are looking for other things to do in Krabi or nearby, here are a couple extra activities to consider during your stay.

Day trip to Khao Sok National Park

A day trip to Khao Sok National Park is a great way to see one of Thailand’s most stunning national parks. Located about 2 ½ hours away by car, Khao Sok is a great way to escape the crowds in Krabi and see some of the most stunning scenery. 

You can book a guided day trip that includes a full day Cheow Lan Lake tour or rent a car and do a self drive to Khao Sok where you can book a longtail boat. 

However, if time permits, we recommend booking a trip that includes an overnight stay at an overwater bungalow for the most memorable experience. 

Visit an Elephant Sanctuary

Visiting an elephant sanctuary is one of the best things to do in Chiang Mai with kids , where the majority of Thailand’s elephant sanctuaries are located. But there are some elephant sanctuaries in southern Thailand, as well.

If your Thailand itinerary doesn’t take you to Chiang Mai, you might want to consider visiting an elephant sanctuary in Krabi. 

Just be sure to do your research and make sure you are choosing an ethical elephant sanctuary, where the majestic creatures are treated with love and respect, and are not abused or forced to perform tricks for tourists.

How many days do you need in Krabi?

Krabi is great for a short visit or even an extended stay. Plan to spend at least 3-4 nights in Krabi, which will give you enough time for a tour of the nearby islands, a hike to the temple, and plenty of beach and night market activities. You want to be sure to build in a lazy beach day and plenty of time for relaxation.

In addition, you take a day trip to Khao Sok National Park, although we strongly recommend spending at least one night in Khao Sok. 

But whether you spend a few days or a full week at the beach destination, there are so many things to do in Krabi that it will certainly become one of your favorite places to visit in Thailand!

Snorkelling Trip in Krabi

Krabi is one of the most beautiful places in Thailand with many islands, clear emerald green water, soft sandy beaches and fascinating coral reefs.  An island-hopping snorkelling trip in Krabi is a must for all its visitors.

Our family went on a day trip at sea exploring Hong Island and the 4 islands,  and witnessing an unforgettable sunset over the Andaman Sea.  We took a private long tail boat around the islands.

The Hong Islands

Our first stop was supposed to be the Hong lagoon , but the tide was so low that none of the boats could enter.  In fact, we saw some boats getting stuck at the entrance of the lagoon because of the low tide.

We skipped Hong lagoon and headed to Hong Island .  It took us about 20 minutes to get there from Ao Nang.  Hong Island had a bay that was protected by limestone cliffs.  Although the water was generally calm, there were lots of rocks below, and since it was low tide, it was difficult to swim and avoid the rocks.  The water at Hong island was also not clear enough for us to snorkel and see the interesting fishes like the clown fish.  I think it would have been better if the tide was higher.  Nevertheless, the soft sandy beach made Hong Island a great beach to relax and have a picnic.

Lunch on the Boat

After the swim at Hong Island,  we returned to the boat and headed to a shady spot near a limestone cliff where the water was calm.  We were served delicious local Thai dishes with rice.

Snorkelling

After lunch, we were off snorkelling near two of the islands in the Andaman sea.

There were lots of fish swimming at the surface that we did not even have to go underwater to see them!

Of course, the view was much better underwater.

Chicken Island

We passed by Chicken Island, or Koh Kai, for a photo opportunity.  From the picture below, it is easy to tell how the island (on the left) got its name.  Did you also notice the turtle-looking island on the right of picture below?

Our next stop was Tub island, or Koh Tub.   There is a three-pronged sandbar connecting Tub island, Chicken island and another small island called Koh Mor.  However, when we arrived, the tide was already high and the sandbar connecting to Chicken island was fully submerged.

Nevertheless, Tub island was a great place to swim because of its calm waters, powder-soft sand, and lots of area to swim (the water remained at waist level even when we moved further away from the beach).

Our last stop before dinner was a quiet beach between limestone cliffs.

There were caves within the limestone cliff to explore.

The great place about going to a small beach was that we practically had the beach to ourselves!

We could also watch daredevils doing cliff jumping nearby.

While we were swimming,  the boat crew was busy barbecuing our food for dinner.

When dinner was ready, we got back on to our boat and anchored just slightly off the beach so that we could watch the sunset.  We had fried rice, and an assortment of grilled food.  We even had fresh grilled cuttlefish that the crew caught while we were out at sea.

While having dinner, we get to enjoy a stunning view of the sunset over the Andaman Sea.

Shortly after sunset,  we witnessed a colony of bats flying out from Chicken Island.  The bats do this every day at sunset and return back to Chicken Island before dawn. Unfortunately, we could not get a great picture of the bats to show you.

We had fun on the island-hopping snorkelling trip in Krabi, and we highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting.  Alternatively, try the another island-hopping trip covering Phi Phi island, Maya Bay and Bamboo beach.

Tips for a Snorkelling Trip in Krabi

• It is easy to book an island-hopping snorkelling trip in Krabi.  You can book it through your hotel, or through the many tour operators along the stretch of shops in Ao Nang.  You could also book it online in advance like us.
• Our tour operator was Andaman Camp and Cruise . The operator was highly recommended on TripAdvisor. We got a big and private long tail boat. We had a guide called Kai who was able to converse well in English, and was great with kids.  She took great photos too!
• Other alternative to long tail boat is speed boat.  They are fast but can be bad for the back as they tend to be very bumpy, and they usually charge per person, instead of per boat.  This could be more costly for families and bigger groups.
• We highly recommend starting later in the morning or in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.  For our trip, we were picked up at our hotel at 10.30am and dropped off after sunset.

Thank you for your tips. I wish I’d read them before our travels. We loved Krabi so much we will be returning as so many things we didn’t see first time. What tips do you have about the mozzies? We also got little stings when snorkelling around the islands., the children found this upsetting. An amazing, beautiful place. Very excited to return.

Hi, I would use an insect repellent spray or lotion to reduce the chances of getting mosquito bites. For snorkelling, we wear long sleeve swimming tops, long pants and water booties.
