Mikel Landa: I’d love to finish close to the podium

Mikel Landa leads the Bahrain Victorious lineup with the 110th edition of the Tour de France departing on home roads for the Basque rider.

Departing from Bilbao, this year’s edition will have riders take on 3,404 km and over 55,000 vertical meters of climbing across the 21 stages, which only includes a hilly 22km time trial on stage 16.

The 21 stages have been categorised into eight flat stages for the sprinters, which Phil Bauhaus will contest with the support of Nikias Arndt, four hilly stages suited to breakaways, where Fred Wright and Matej Mohoric will look for their opportunities and eight mountain stages where Jack Haig and Wout Poels will support Landa. Pello Bilbao will also keep his eye on the GC and riding home roads for the Grand Depart; he will be highly motivated to aim for another place in the top ten as he did back in 2021.

With a single time trial, a grand depart in his home country and plenty of climbing, Mikel Landa is looking forward to this edition of the Tour de France .

Bahrain Victorious have confirmed their lineup for the 2023 Tour de France , with Mikel Landa set to lead the team on home soil when the race departs from Bilbao on July 1.

Memories of the painfully-recent loss of Gino Mäder remain very strong within the peloton and even more so in his team, with the squad stating in their Tour de France press release Sunday. “We want to ride in his memory and dedicate it to him. Today and every day we ride for you, Gino.”

Twice fourth in the Tour de France and third in the Giro d’Italia last year , Landa makes his first Tour participation in three years. He is expected to battle for GC, with teammate and fellow Basque Pello Bilbao also a protected rider for the overall.

Jack Haig, riding his second Grand Tour of the year after his recent completion of the Giro d’Italia, and former Angliru winner Wout Poels will have a climbing support role for Landa and Bilbao, while not forgetting their own chances in the mountains, as well.

Fred Wright will look to follow up his breakthrough National Championships win with a return to the race where last year he had several near-misses. Both he and Matej Mohorič, a double stage winner in 2021, will once again be looking for breakaway opportunities.

Last but not least, Phil Bauhaus and fellow sprinter and good friend Nikias Arndt, who will act as his leadout, will be looking to make the most of the 2023 Tour’s eight flat stages. “The start in the Basque Country is going to be really exciting, I can already feel the fans passion and excitement,” Landa said in the press release. “I think it’s going to be a big celebration of cycling, so I’m really happy to be a part of that.”

Never a fan of time trialling, in a Tour route with minimal kilometres against the clock, at 33 Landa has one of the best opportunities of the latter part of his career.

2024 Tour of Basque Country

Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard suffered lung damage, broken ribs and a broken collarbone on Thursday, while Remco Evenepoel also broke his collarbone in the same incident.

Primoz Roglic, who had been leading the general classification, retired despite not sustaining fractures in Thursday's crash, while Jay Vine, Sean Quinn and Steff Cras were also hospitalised.

Soudal Quick-Step riders Landa and Gil Gelders were forced out of the race on Friday after another crash.

It was a fast day's racing on the 175.9 kilometre run from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Amorebieta-Etxano, won by Romain Gregoire who edged a bunch sprint to the line.

Spaniard Landa, who finished second in the race last year and in 2018, was pictured on a stretcher being put in an ambulance.

The Belgian team said Landa had fractured his collarbone and "will now undergo further investigation to determine the best path for his recovery".

Lidl-Trek's Mattias Skjelmose defended the yellow jersey he inherited after Roglic's retirement with Max Schachmann two seconds behind after finishing third on stage five.

Gregoire edged Orluis Aular in a photo finish to claim his first world tour win.

"I feel incredibly satisfied, it was a super quick day today and I'm super proud to have won," said a delighted Gregoire.

"I had to really fight right until the end, even up to the finish line I didn't know whether I had won, it was a little bit stressful."

The final stage on Saturday starts and ends in Eibar, featuring seven classified climbs over 137.8 kilometres.

Last year Vingegaard crushed his opponents in a carbon copy of the stage, also claiming general classification victory.

The Dane's injuries pose a question mark over his hopes of recording a third successive Tour de France triumph this summer, with the race beginning on June 29 in Florence, Italy.

Mikel Landa: ‘I want to return to a grand tour podium’

LUCENA, Spain (VN) — Mikel Landa is three days into his 2022 season debut at Ruta del Sol , and so far, so good. Knock wood.

The Bahrain Victorious star firmly believes if luck stays on his side this season and he keeps rubber-side down, he’ll be banging on the door once again at the grand tours.

“I hope to stay healthy and give the maximum this year,” Landa told VeloNews . “I’ve been up there in the grand tours before, so why not again?

“If the condition is there and the luck as well, I’d like to stand on another grand tour podium again.”

Landa, who turned 32 in December, is using this five-day stage race across the hills and mountains of southern Spain to ease into an important campaign.

The Basque rider is putting the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France at the center of his 2022 calendar.

It’s a big challenge for any rider, but Landa wants to prove he’s still a factor in the grand tours. With a deep Bahrain Victorious bench, Landa will go as one of the leaders at the Giro, and then reload for the Tour.

“At first, we’ll really focus on the Giro and start well,” Landa said. “There’s no problem combining the both of them. So once the Giro is over, there’s time to recover, and then we’ll take on the Tour.”

A strong ride at either one of them will help him keep his place among the elite of the GC pecking order.

After a rough and tumble 2021, which saw him crash out of the Giro and abandon the Vuelta a España, Landa isn’t considering anything else.

“It’s costing me a bit to get things going here at this race,” Landa said at sign-in on Friday. “I wanted to come into the season a little bit easier than most seasons, but we are little by little regaining the rhythm of racing.”

Since his breakout Giro podium with third in 2015, Landa emerged as one of the most consistent — and some say most hyped — grand tour riders over the past half-decade or so.

He missed the podium in the 2017 Tour by one second, and late reeled off four more top-1os across the Giro and Tour, but did not reach the podium heights again.

“We start the season with the objectives of the Giro and Tour, so we’ll build slowly toward those goals, and then we’ll see how it goes,” Landa said.

With a contract through 2023 in his pocket, there’s no reason to panic yet.

Following a heavy crash in the 2021 Giro, Landa just hopes to have a safe and traditional buildup to the season’s grand tours.

“I don’t see myself here to try to win, but if I am feeling good, maybe try to go for a stage win,” he said of the Ruta. “The goals come later in the season.”

Mikel Landa aiming for two Grand Tours in 2021

Basque climber will target the Tour de France plus a return to either the Giro or Vuelta

Mikel Landa ( Bahrain Victorious ) will once again target the Tour de France in 2021, aiming for the podium after finishing fourth at the 2020 race. He'll also race another Grand Tour, though which one has yet to be decided.

The Spaniard took part in his fifth Tour this year, taking the chance to lead a team for the first time having moved from Movistar to Bahrain McLaren. He repeated his 2017 result of fourth overall, finishing the race 5:58 down on winner Tadej Pogačar.

"The Tour is the big goal of the year, that is clear," a member of Landa's entourage told Basque newspaper Deia . "But it's true that Mikel wants to race another Grand Tour.

"This year, the circumstances did not fit, as we all know, but if you go back to a normal calendar, he wants to do two Grand Tours. We don't know if it will be the Giro d'Italia or the Vuelta a España that will join the Tour."

Landa, who turns 31 on Sunday, has raced the Giro five times and the Vuelta on four occasions, his best results coming in Italy with a third-place finish behind Alberto Contador and then-teammate Fabio Aru in 2015.

His Grand Tour stage wins have come at both races, all in the mountains, with wins at Madonna di Campiglio, Aprica and Piancavallo in Italy, and victory at Cortals d'Encamp at the 2015 Vuelta. He'll wait for the route announcements before deciding which race to revisit, though.

"The most normal thing is that he will go to the race in which the route is most suitable for him," said the source. "But he does have the idea of competing in two Grand Tours. It's something he likes, and his body recovers well between two such efforts. He digests it well.

"Physically, he has spent very little [in 2020], but psychologically it has been a hard year. He was left with the desire for another race."

Landa, who on Thursday will head to the Canary Islands to train, will also target his home race, Itzulia, early in the season. The race wasn't held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but returns to its usual mid-April calendar spot in 2021. Landa has raced there six time previously, taking two stage wins over the years, as well as finishing second in 2018. 

"This is one of Mikel's objectives. He will go out with the idea of competing for the victory. He wants to be good in his home race."
