Some A-Roads have been upgraded and improved so that they have become the same standard as motorways. These sections of road have kept their number, but have now been suffixed with the letter (M), for example the A1(M), the A64(M) and the A635(M). In some cases this designation has been used by the Highways Agency to indicate motorway bypasses of an existing road.

A black and a white horse bolt through the streets of central London, the white horse blood-stained

Runaway horses in ‘serious condition’ after bolting through central London

Animals ran through rush-hour streets, colliding with vehicles and leaving four people in hospital

Two of the military horses that broke loose during a morning exercise and bolted through central London on Wednesday are in “serious condition” and have been operated on, according to officials.

The runaway horses, including one white horse drenched in blood, ran through the rush-hour streets of the capital, colliding with vehicles and resulting in four people being taken to hospital.

“There were five horses. They have all been recovered. Three of them are fine, two of them are unfortunately in a relatively serious condition and obviously we will be monitoring that condition,” the defence minister James Cartlidge told Sky News.

Four of the seven horses, Vida, Trojan, Quaker and Tennyson, broke loose after being “spooked”, the British army said in a statement on X.

Two horses were operated on last night with one transferred to an equine hospital, it said, and the three soldiers involved were expected to recover fully and return to duty.

“Our horses receive the highest standards of care, and those that did not undergo surgery are expected to return to duty in due course,” the statement said.

A group of seven horses and six soldiers from the Household Cavalry based at Hyde Park barracks were on an extended exercise in Belgravia on Wednesday at about 8.40am when chaos erupted.

Astonished witnesses described “total mayhem” as five of the horses broke loose. Four service personnel were thrown from their horses and it is understood three soldiers were assessed in hospital for their injuries, which were not thought to be serious.

Pictures and videos shared on social media showed two horses running through central London. One collided with a parked taxi outside the Clermont hotel in Buckingham Palace Road, smashing the windows of the Mercedes people carrier. Another horse crashed into a parked doubledecker tour bus, smashing the windscreen.

Cartlidge described the incident as an “exceptional situation”, adding that more than 150 animals were on exercise in the capital each day.

“Obviously, we didn’t want that situation to happen. What I would stress to you is that this is very exceptional,” he said.

“Unfortunately we have seen what has happened, but all I can say is the crucial thing, as you said yourself, no serious injuries to the public as far as we aware, and of course we will be keeping an eye on the situation.”

Horses Run Loose Through Central London in Surreal Spectacle

A number of runaway army horses galloped through London on Wednesday morning, causing alarm and injuring pedestrians. All of the animals were eventually recovered.

Reporting from London

Several runaway military horses galloped through the streets of London on Wednesday morning, alarming pedestrians, sideswiping cars and buses, and turning an ordinary rush hour into a frightening, almost surreal spectacle.

Four people were treated for injuries, including a soldier who was thrown from one of the horses, according to the London Ambulance Service. The horses, which belong to the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, a unit that parades in royal pageants, are normally well-trained symbols of London’s regal past.

On Wednesday, however, they broke into a panicked stampede that had more in common with the Wild West. Galloping past some of London’s most famous sites — from Buckingham Palace to Tower Bridge — they left a trail of damaged vehicles and shocked pedestrians, some of whom had to dart out of their way.

By 10:30 a.m., the Metropolitan Police said that all the horses had been recovered and were back in their barracks in Hyde Park. But some had suffered injuries, including a white horse that had blood splashed on its neck, chest and forelimbs.

The drama began shortly after 8 a.m. when the horses, apparently spooked by the noise from a nearby construction site, threw off the military riders who were taking them out for routine exercises. Photographs showed one of the soldiers being treated while lying on the ground on Buckingham Palace Road.

Video footage captured a pair of riderless horses galloping in Aldwych, a stately area in central London. Their hooves clattered in the shadow of grand stone buildings as passers-by scattered, buses jerked to a stop and cars honked. The white horse, wearing a saddle and stirrups with its reins flying behind it, was caught on video later galloping in the vicinity of Tower Bridge.

Other pictures showed the result of unexpected encounters between animals and a busy urban landscape: a double-decker tour bus with a smashed windshield and a gray Mercedes van with a dented door and smashed rear windows.

As the incident unfolded, newspapers and broadcasters began carrying live coverage, briefly riveting much of the city. The Metropolitan Police said in a statement, “We are aware of a number of horses that are currently loose in central London and are working with colleagues, including the army, to locate them.”

Shortly before 10 a.m., the City of London police reported that its officers had corralled two of the horses near Limehouse, a neighborhood adjacent to the city’s docklands. That indicated they had made their way across Central London, from Westminster through Covent Garden and past the financial district.

“We’re waiting for an army horse box to collect the horses and transport them to veterinary care,” the city police said in a statement.

An army spokesman told The Daily Telegraph that horses had been recovered and returned to their camp, but he added, “A number of personnel and horses have been injured and are receiving the appropriate medical attention.”

The Household Cavalry — made up of the two most senior units in the British Army, the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals — is a familiar sight in royal pageants. They trooped in the coronation of King Charles III last May and during the state funeral of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II , in September 2022.

The cavalry’s horses are trained to be comfortable in busy streets and around people, which made the incident on Wednesday extraordinarily unusual.

Tourists often pose for pictures next to the horses when they stand guard in front of Horse Guards Parade , a ceremonial parade ground on Whitehall, north of Downing Street. The soldiers astride them only occasionally scold the tourists for getting too close or otherwise disturbing the animals.

Watch: Cavalry horses cause chaos in London

Four people have been taken to hospital after five runaway horses of the Household Cavalry threw off their riders and raced through London.

The horses, one of which was covered in blood, caused chaos as they roamed the city centre and collided with vehicles, including a double-decker bus and taxi.

They initially became spooked by loud construction during a routine military exercise in Belgravia, the Army said.

Officers said the horses had been recovered and returned to camp.

Two of the animals were finally recovered in Limehouse in east London, more than five miles from where the incident began. The Army said they were undergoing veterinary care.

An army spokesperson told the BBC that three soldiers were receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries. The fourth person injured in the incident is believed to be a cyclist and member of the public.

Horse running towards shocked cyclists

The chaos began while members of the Household Cavalry - members of the military who carry out ceremonial duties around Buckingham Palace - were taking part in a rehearsal for a Major General's Inspection - which was due to take place on Thursday in Hyde Park, the Army told the BBC.

Every military unit taking part in the King's birthday parade, which takes place in June, must pass a Major General's Inspection in advance. An Army spokesman said the group included six soldiers and seven horses. Four soldiers were thrown from their saddles, and five horses ran loose through London.

'Heartfelt gratitude'

Lt Col Matt Woodward, commanding officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, said: "Building materials were dropped from height right next to them.

"The ensuing shock caused all horses to bolt and unseated some riders."

He expressed "heartfelt gratitude" to the emergency services and the public who helped in securing the horses.

One serviceman was thrown from his horse on Buckingham Palace Road, before one of the loose animals collided with a taxi waiting outside the Clermont Hotel, shattering the windows.

London Ambulance Service said four people were treated by paramedics in Buckingham Palace Road, Belgrave Square, and the junction between Chancery Lane and Fleet Street. All four were taken to hospital.

It said all three incidents took place within 10 minutes, between 08:25 and 08:35 BST.

An Army spokesperson added: "A number of military working horses became loose during routine exercise this morning.

"All of the horses have now been recovered and returned to camp. A number of personnel and horses have been injured and are receiving the appropriate medical attention."

Smashed window

Grace Whitaker, 23, told the BBC she had just got off a bus on her way to work when she saw several emergency services vehicles near Victoria Station.

"I saw about five fire engines, six ambulances," she said. "I saw one of the horses that was involved, saw some members of the army. It was quite the scene with lots of emergency services around putting up cordons."

"One of the black horses was there. I thought maybe it was a police horse that had come to attend to the scene but obviously I now know it was one of the horses that had escaped.

"I saw what looked like a taxi van that had damage to it, a smashed window. I think everyone's immediate impression was that somebody had been hit by a car. We were quite surprised when we realised it was to do with horses."

A black and white horse run through the street in central London

Ms Whitaker added that she witnessed at least one person being treated for injuries.

"There was a blue tent around what I assume was an injured person."

'Distressed'

Megan Morra told the BBC she was walking to work when she she saw police officers "running through the street", and another walking a "very bloody" black horse down the path.

She said the horse appeared to be suffering from a large head injury.

"There was a lot of blood," she says. "I was a bit distressed to be honest, looking at the poor horse."

Map detailing where the horses were spotted

Black cab driver Robbie told BBC Radio London he narrowly avoided being hit by the horses.

He said: "I was just outside Buckingham Palace on the Mall and heard loads of galloping and looked behind and there were about three or four horses.

"Two of them were sprinting up towards Trafalgar Square and there was a white one covered in blood as well.

"I looked in the rear mirror and saw them coming right up behind me, and at the time I had two punters in the back so I was worried about them."

'Risked their own safety'

Insp Myles Hilbery, of City of London Police, praised the two officers who helped catch the horses in Limehouse.

"Police constables Lucy Hawes and Daniel McKeown risked their own safety to provide first aid to the injured and anxious horses," he said.

"They kept the horses calm while waiting for a horse box and veterinary team to arrive."

A grey taxi badly damaged with smashed windows outside the Clermont hotel on Buckingham Palace Road

London Fire Brigade said it had used its drone team to help locate the animals.

The incident is unusual, as the horses of the Household Cavalry are specifically chosen by the army.

According to forces.net, the horses are chosen for their height (at least 168cm) and strength as they need to be able to carry a soldier plus kit for a long period of time.

The horses are trained for several months and ridden on the streets of London to get used to heavy traffic and loud noises, including gun salutes and military bands.

Each horse is usually assigned to one specific soldier.

Military horses have caused "total mayhem" after bolting during exercises and charging through central London in rush hour.

The Household Cavalry said the animals were spooked by builders dropping rubble from a height "right next to them".

The incident happened on Wednesday morning as the horses took part in what the army called "routine exercise" in the Belgravia area.

Seven horses and six Household Cavalry soldiers were on the exercise when chaos erupted.

Four service personnel were thrown off and five horses got loose - with two of them filmed galloping through the streets.

A white horse was seen covered in blood after hitting a taxi, while another animal smashed the windscreen of a parked tour bus.

The pair were eventually captured by police near Limehouse, five miles from where they ran off, and taken to be checked by army vets.

Four people were taken to hospital from three incidents: on Buckingham Palace Road, Belgrave Square, and the junction of Chancery Lane and Fleet Street, said London Ambulance Service.

It is understood three Household Cavalry personnel were assessed in hospital but that their injuries were not serious.

Photographer Jordan Pettitt witnessed the horses running down Aldwych, with the white horse's front "saturated rich red".

He told Sky News the atmosphere was "eerie" as the street had fallen "completely silent" despite it being rush hour.

Mr Pettitt added: "It was a very surreal moment, it's not something I would ever expect to see in London nor would anyone expect to see in London."

A management consultant, named only as Tula, said the sight was "gruesome" and "like a weird dream".

"People were stopping in the street shocked," they said.

"The horses were running into fast-moving traffic and seemed terrified. Some unmarked police cars were chasing after them, which didn't seem to be helping."

'In a frenzy'

London Ambulance Service said paramedics were first called to Buckingham Palace Road to reports of a person being thrown from a horse.

A taxi driver waiting at the nearby Clermont Hotel had the windows of his Mercedes people carrier smashed by one of the horses.

Another of the animals then collided with a parked double-decker tour bus, smashing the windscreen.

Roland, a worker for tour bus company Toot Bus, said the scene was "total mayhem".

"I saw horses come from the bus station in front of Victoria run around in a frenzy. People were running around to avoid them," he said.

British Army provides update after military horse incident

In a video on X, commanding officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Matt Woodward, said the horses were exercised every morning to help them get used to city noise.

WHAT IS THE HOUSEHOLD CAVALRY?

With more than 360 years of history, and as protectors of the Monarch, the Household Cavalry is one of the British Army's elite corps.

It is made up of the two most senior regiments of the British Army - The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals. As part of the Household Division, the corps serves as the King's official bodyguard.

The Household Cavalry Regiment dates back to 1660 and has served in every major British conflict since. On the battlefield, it is an armoured reconnaissance regiment, locating and reporting on the movement of enemy forces, and engaging enemy units attempting to do the same.

It uses the British Army's flagship new AJAX armoured fighting vehicle.

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment are the ceremonial face of the regiment.

The animals are all receiving care from vets at Hyde Park barracks.

Someone bought a UK domain name for Meghan Markle's new brand and redirected it to an anti-poverty charity

  • Someone bought a domain name similar to Meghan Markle's latest venture, American Riviera Orchard.
  • They then directed it to a donation page for a charity, which had the message: "hope meghan wouldn't mind."
  • This isn't the first time the Sussexes have had to deal with cybersquatters.

Insider Today

The Duchess of Sussex appears to have forgotten the golden rule of buying domain names: buy all the domain names.

The same day that Meghan Markle launched the site American Riviera Orchard last month, another domain was registered — americanrivieraorchard.uk — which does not direct traffic to her page.

As of Friday, the mysterious site had a simple message on it: "Forgiveness. Permission. Please donate to the Trussell Trust."

It then linked to a JustGiving page purportedly in support of a well-known UK food bank charity.

The JustGiving page has the message: "not meghan. hope meghan wouldn't mind."

It adds: "thoughts with catherine. x" — a likely reference to Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, who announced on March 22 that she was undergoing treatment for cancer .

The maker of the page, who did not leave contact information, was unreachable for comment.

Related stories

At the time of publication, the fundraiser had attracted more than £8,300, over $10,000, far exceeding its £1,000 target.

The Sussexes did not immediately respond to a BI request for comment, sent outside of US working hours.

Donors to the food bank used the comment section to pass on remarks about Meghan and Prince Harry.

"A worthy cause that the Sussexes would no doubt approve of," one donor wrote.

Another was a little more pointed: "Fantastic — No one needs 200 pound jars of jam — this is a brilliant cause and thankyou for diverting the uk website to real people not shallow lifestyle gurus."

It's unclear what Markle plans to do with the American Riviera Orchard brand, but an associated trademark application says the brand intends to sell tableware, cookbooks, jams, and spreads.

The Trussell Trust, meanwhile, is the UK's leading food bank charity, supporting a network of 1,200 food banks across the country.

In a statement sent to BI, the charity's director of public engagement, Sophie Carre, said: "The charity is not connected with this website domain and have no knowledge of who set it up."

But she said that the trust would accept any donations that ensue, saying that "the money raised would not meet the requirements for rejection."

The Sussexes appear not to have learned lessons from previous cybersquatting efforts.

In 2020, their Archewell Foundation was targetted , with the domain archewellfoundation.com briefly directing visitors to a YouTube video of Kanye West's, or Ye's, song "Gold Digger." (The actual foundation URL is archewell.org.)

Ending a domain with just ".uk," as in this latest case, is not common even in the UK — where domain names typically end with ".co.uk," or ".org.uk."

But when you're part of the UK's most famous family, you should probably cover all of your bases.
