Loay River Cruise: A One-of-a-kind Culinary Adventure In Bohol

Loay River Cruise: A One-of-a-kind Culinary Adventure In Bohol

The Loay River Cruise has got to be one most fascinating and unforgettable surprises in our most recent Bohol getaway.  Full of classic Filipino dishes and beautiful sights, the cruise literally appeased our grumbling stomach as well as treated us to a melodious serenade and scenic views of the river. What’s more, the tour introduced us to a sprightly ethnic group who welcomed us with their genuine smiles, exotic pets and infectious positive energy.

Loay River Cruise: A One-of-a-kind Culinary Adventure In Bohol

The first half of our countryside road trip in Bohol was nothing short of amazing. It started on a high note with a visit to one of the country’s most iconic sights – the Chocolate Hills. Then, it was followed by a heart-pumping sky bike ride, and stops to other notable sights in the island-province, including the Bamboo hanging bridge and the man-made forest.  And after all those thrills and delights, my mind and body began to generate strong cravings for filling goodies. Thankfully, though, the Loay River Cruise, with its eat-all-you-can buffet, satiated our gastronomic urges.

Honestly, I didn’t know much about the cruise prior to our trip. I’ve been to Bohol on a number of occasions, but I’ve never experienced it, until last year.  And with the tour’s first half closing in, I thought we were going to Loboc River, to experience the quintessential river cruise.

But, my girlfriend, who did quite an impressive job planning our trip, had a different idea in mind. And I must say I was utterly pleased that she did opt to go with Loay over Loboc.

Loay River Cruise: A One-of-a-kind Culinary Adventure In Bohol

We arrived at the site – Rio Verde Floating Resort – an hour past lunchtime, meaning I was really eager to munch a ton of food. At the reception area, we were offered two options for our river cruise – the high end buffet and regular buffet.  We took the regular ride since it was the cheaper option.

Once the bills were settled, we wasted no time, and boarded our designated floating restaurant. Without any hesitation, we grabbed our plates and filled with it a variety of dishes, including ginataan langka, pork barbecue, buttered chicken and pancit special. Afterwards, I culminated my lunch with tropical fruits and a tasty serving of Bibingka special.

Loay River Cruise: A One-of-a-kind Culinary Adventure In Bohol

The boat-restaurant was still tied on dock, when we completed our meal, giving us a chance to talk about the crazily fun bike ride at the Chocolate Hills Adventure Park. A few minutes later, the boat began to sail on the calm and emerald river. While the boat was cruising gently , the folk singer serenaded us and a bunch of Korean tourists with a medley of pop and traditional Visayan songs.

Loay River Cruise: A One-of-a-kind Culinary Adventure In Bohol

Even though it was raining, I still had a swell time enjoying the verdant landscapes surrounding Loboc River.  From sea palms and mangroves to breathtaking limestone cliffs, there was always a mesmerizing sight at every turn in this cruise ride. And unlike the Loboc river cruise, the waterway isn’t crowded with people, and is pretty clean and pristine.  In short, the cruise was such as relaxing and scenic experience.

After a few minutes of cruising, the downpour finally stopped, and our floating restaurant steered on river’s left side, to dock on a small village. I thought the tour was over, or the barge was about to pick up a set of guests. But, my girlfriend asked me and my buddy Rechie, to follow her into the village with an “Ati Tribe” label on its entrance.

Loay River Cruise: A One-of-a-kind Culinary Adventure In Bohol

As we stepped into the village, a familiar drumbeat instantly greeted my ears. It was a sound of a band with tribal beats and complex drum patterns.  Actually, it reminded me of the streets of Cebu during the vivid and colorful Sinulog Day Grand parade.

A couple of seconds later, a group of young tribesmen from the Ati Tribe gave us a warm welcome with their cheerful smiles and rather exotic pets.  While others were terrified of their pets, I went near these creatures to touch them and even embrace them, as I’m no stranger to these kinds of animals.

Together with my partner and Rechie, we strolled around the village, and took pictures of its traditional huts, statues and interesting displays. I know everything here is fabricated, but it really has a very tribal and traditional feel to it.

I went to the group playing the drums, and as a former band member, I was impressive with their skills. As I went closer, the guy on the left side asked me, in Visayan words, if I was interested in playing the drums. Of course, I didn’t let the opportunity pass by to experience a jamming session with these people.

And by the way, there are also refreshments, souvenirs as well as photo ops with kids and their wooden arrows in the “Ati Tribe” village, to make things more fun and memorable.

After spending 30 minutes in the village, we went back to our barge with big grins on our faces, to return to the jump-off point.

My overall thoughts on Loay River Cruise

The Loay River Cruise is, as far as I’m concerned, a can’t-miss experience for anyone visiting Bohol. As a matter of fact, I think the Loay River Cruise is a lot better than its Loboc counterpart.  The food isn’t exactly that great, but it’s hearty and can definitely fill an empty stomach. Plus, it’s super serene, relaxing, as well as offers astounding views of the river and its lush vegetation. To top it all off, it gives you an opportunity to explore the Ati Tribe village, and rub shoulders with its extraordinary dwellers.

Prices for the Loay River Cruise

Children: 260 PHP per head (4 to 6 years old)

Adult: 500 PHP per head

Regular buffet:

LOBOC RIVER CRUISE

How far is the river cruise from Tagbilaran City, and what transportation options are available to get there?

Where can I book a river cruise tour?

  • Arrange with your hotel . You can approach the receptionist in your hotel and ask if they are able to arrange a countryside tour for you. Most hotels should be able to do so.
  • Contact a travel agency . If the price being charged by your hotel is out of your budget, you can contact an independent travel agency directly instead. There are several agencies around Tagbilaran City or Panglao Island. You can also join and check out the travel companies in DIY Travel Philippines Facebook Page  or just simply search on Facebook.
  • Contact a van driver or tour guide . If this is what you prefer, I highly recommend Kuya John. He is a van driver slash tour guide (but more of a van driver really) who can take you around Bohol. His number is (+63) 916 176 5683.
  • Reserve via Klook. If there is only 1 or 2 of you in this trip, it would be cheaper if you book through Klook. You have 2 options with Klook. First option is to book only the cruise with no hotel transfer, which is the cheapest option than if you will book directly at the cruise/floating restaurant. Second option is a cruise reservation with private transfer and price depends on the number of travelers. If you would like either of this arrangement, you can visit Klook here: Loboc River Cruise in Bohol
  • Do-It-Yourself . If you would like to go by public transport, you can go to Dao Integrated Bus Terminal from any point in Bohol and look for van/bus/jeepney that can take you to Loboc or Loay town proper, whichever you prefer. Ask the driver to drop you off near the entrance of the dock of the floating restaurants and should be a few minutes walk.  For a more detailed step-by-step guide on how to reach Loboc, click here:  How to get to Loboc from Tagbilaran City or Panglao

The Perfect Midday Stop: Why the Loboc River Cruise is a Must-Do in Bohol

loay vs loboc river cruise

Around Bohol

Bohol’s Countryside Tour boasts of the top tourist spots on the island. One of the most popular is hands down the Loboc River Cruise, where you get to enjoy a lunch buffet on board a floating restaurant along the waters of this calm and serene body of water.

The Loboc River is found in the town of Loboc, about 24 kilometers from the capital city of Tagbilaran. The cruise usually lasts for about an hour, and starts at the Loay Bridge or mouth of the river, then cruises down the stream until you reach Busay Falls, where the boat turns back to return to the docking station. The schedule for the lunch buffet is from 11 am to 2 pm but once you get on the boat, you can start munching on the food.

One boat or floating restaurant can accommodate a total of 50 to 60 people, so there might be some waiting time before the river cruise starts if there are only a few of you.

So what makes the river cruise a must-do when you visit Bohol? Here are the reasons why:

Lunch Buffet

loay vs loboc river cruise

Loboc River Cruise – Buffet

Touring Bohol can be exhausting – climbing the steps to the Chocolate Hills and being subjected to the heating sun can drain you of your energy, making the Loboc River Cruise the perfect respite from visiting one tourist spot from another.

The lunch buffet is scrumptious and you are treated to a variety of Filipino dishes, which includes Filipino dessert and tropical fruits. One serving of a bottled soft drink is also served, but you’ll have to pay an additional fee if you wish to have more to drink.

Live Entertainment

Once you step into the floating restaurant, a group of singers will serenade and entertain you as you wait or as you munch on lunch, and during the entirety of the cruise. These local singers mostly sing folk sings, Boholano songs, and Filipino ballads but every now and then Western songs are played, especially if foreign tourists are present.

Cultural Presentation

loay vs loboc river cruise

Guest Dancing To Tinikling

A stop along the river includes a cultural presentation where a group of singers and dancers entertain you with folk songs and dances. The “Tinikling,” a Filipino dance, is mostly presented, and you get to join them, too, if you wish. The local government set up the presentation as a way to help the communities who live by the river.

The Cruise Itself

The river is calm so there’s no need to worry about getting seasick or if your food is gonna topple over the tables. The floating restaurant is made up of a covered platform placed on top of two outrigger boats.

Along the river, you can see a verdant landscape, where a healthy dose of bushes, coconut trees, and banana groves surround the river beds on both sides.

Local communities of fishermen can also be seen along the river, where they catch fish; small boys playing by the river and jumping into the water; women doing laundry; and local villagers just going about their business.

The Loboc River Cruise is a great way to relax midday, making it the perfect way to enjoy the island’s natural beauty while you take a break and indulge in delicious food from the rest of your tour. Take some time to revel in the beautiful nature that surrounds you as you refresh and re-energize for the rest of your Bohol Countryside Tour .

Loboc River Cruise Bohol: The Ultimate Cruise Tour in the Philippines

Welcome to the Loboc River Cruise, the crown jewel of Bohol Island’s attractions. This cruise offers a mesmerizing blend of nature, culture, and food. Tourists, both Filipino and foreign, are flocking to experience this riverside wonder every year. Guaranteed to be a memorable experience for everyone.

The Rich History of Loboc River Cruise

The Loboc River Cruise is not just a recent phenomenon, its roots trace back decades, making it an integral part of Bohol’s cultural and tourism history. The river itself has been a lifeline for the residents of the town of Loboc and its neighboring areas for centuries. Historically, the river was a primary source of livelihood, with locals relying on fishing and transportation of goods.

It was in the late 1980s when the potential of the river as a tourist attraction began to be realized. The local government, seeing the pristine beauty of the river and its surroundings, initiated the idea of a river cruise. The aim was twofold: to boost local tourism and to provide an alternative source of income for the residents. The first cruises were simple, with small bancas (traditional Filipino boats) offering rides to visitors. Over time, these evolved into the larger floating restaurants we see today.

But what truly set the Loboc River Cruise apart was its unique blend of nature, culture, and gastronomy. By the 1990s, the cruise started incorporating buffet lunches, showcasing traditional Filipino dishes. Additionally, cultural performances, especially by the renowned Loboc Children’s Choir, became a staple of the cruise experience. Their melodious voices echoing along the riverbanks added a magical touch to the journey.

Today, the Loboc River Cruise stands as a testament to Bohol’s commitment to sustainable tourism. It’s a beautiful blend of the past and the present, offering visitors a glimpse into Bohol’s rich history while ensuring a modern, comfortable experience. Now, the cruise continues to be a beacon of Bohol’s tourism, drawing visitors from all corners of the world.

Along the way, you’ll pass by local villages, rice fields, and even get glimpses of the river as you approach Loboc.

Head over to the Dao Integrated Bus Terminal, which is just a few kilometers from the city center. From there, buses and vans frequently depart for Loboc. The journey is comfortable, taking around one hour, and the fare is typically below 100 pesos ($2). If you’re unsure about which bus to take, the terminal staff and even fellow passengers are usually eager to assist. Additional Tips

While the journey from Tagbilaran to Loboc is relatively short, there are a few attractions you might consider exploring en route. The Church of San Pedro in Loboc town, one of the oldest churches in Bohol, is a testament to the region’s rich history. If you’re a nature enthusiast, making a stop at Busay Falls can be refreshing. And for those interested in a guided tour, several operators in the city offer packages that include the Loboc River Cruise and other Bohol highlights.

Journey from Panglao to Loboc

For many visitors, Panglao Island serves as the starting point of their Bohol adventure, thanks to its renowned beaches and proximity to the Panglao Airport. Transitioning from the sandy shores of Panglao to the tranquil riverside of Loboc is a journey that’s both scenic and straightforward.

If you’ve rented a car or a scooter, the drive from Panglao to Loboc is approximately 25 kilometers and takes around 40 minutes. Start on the Panglao Island Circumferential Road, heading towards Tagbilaran. Once you reach the city, follow the Loay Interior Road which will lead you directly to Loboc. The roads are well-maintained, and the journey offers glimpses of Bohol’s picturesque countryside.

For those relying on public transportation, the journey is just as convenient. From Panglao, take a tricycle or a multicab to the Dao Integrated Bus Terminal in Tagbilaran. The bus fare is typically around 100 pesos ($2), and the journey takes around one hour. Again, if you’re unsure about the timings or the bus to board, don’t hesitate to ask the locals or the terminal staff.

While the direct route to Loboc is quick and scenic, if you have some time to spare, consider making a detour to some of the attractions along the way. The Tarsier Sanctuary is a popular stop, offering a chance to see the world’s smallest primates in their natural habitat. Similarly, the neighboring town of Loay, with its historic Loay Bridge and serene Loay River, is worth a visit. And if you’re traveling in a group or prefer a guided experience, many tour operators in Panglao offer day trips to Loboc, often combining it with other attractions in Bohol.

The Authentic Bohol Countryside Tour Experience

Bohol tours are incomplete without the Loboc River Cruise. As you cruise along, the riverside adorned with palm trees and the distant view of the Chocolate Hills make for a picturesque setting. And if you time your visit right, the Busay Falls, although not grand in height, adds a touch of magic to the journey. The cruise starts in the town proper of Loboc and floats through some of the cleanest rivers in the country.

Dining With Nature: The Floating Restaurants

One of the standout features of the Loboc River Cruise is the unique dining experience it offers. As you glide along the serene waters of the Loboc River, you’re treated to a feast that tantalizes both your taste buds and your eyes. The floating restaurants are a testament to Bohol’s commitment to offering an authentic and memorable dining experience.

The dining is buffet-style, allowing you to sample a wide variety of dishes. Tables are arranged on the boat, and as it cruises along, you can get up, select your dishes, and then return to your seat to enjoy the meal with the moving landscape as your backdrop. It’s a relaxed setting, with the gentle hum of the boat’s engine, the rustling of the trees, and the occasional song from local performers adding to the ambiance.

Sample of Dishes

The dishes are predominantly Filipino, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of the region. You can expect dishes like:

  • Adobo: A savory, slightly tangy chicken or pork dish slow-cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic.
  • Grilled Fish: Fresh catch from the surrounding waters, grilled to perfection with a smoky flavor.
  • Pancit: A noodle dish often mixed with vegetables and meat or seafood, with soy based sauce.
  • Kinilaw: A Filipino version of ceviche, where raw fish is cured in vinegar and mixed with onions, ginger, and chili.

Must-Try Food:  While all dishes offer a taste of Filipino cuisine, if there’s one dish you shouldn’t miss, it’s the  Lechon . This roasted suckling pig is a delicacy in the Philippines. Its crispy skin combined with tender meat, often served with a liver-based sauce, is a gastronomic delight.

Note: Don’t forget to order your drinks if you prefer cola or juice. Once the boat departs, you can’t order drinks anymore since they don’t keep stocks on the boat.

The Ati Tribe Attraction

While the Loboc River Cruise is a sensory delight, the Ati Tribe performance adds depth to the journey. Interacting with the locals, understanding their traditions, and even joining in their songs and dances, offers a cultural immersion like no other.

Loboc River Cruise – Bohol

Loboc River Cruise can’t be something optional if you don’t want to miss a superb experience on your Bohol countryside tour. Imagine yourself enjoying a buffet lunch in a festival-themed floating restaurant while enjoying the cool breeze blowing inside it as it traverses Loboc’s clean river which is surrounded by lush green plants. It was truly an amazing experience that I never expected. Eating lunch has never been this fun and relaxing.

Loboc River Cruise Experience

I like that they served food that is strictly Filipino . Typical party food like spaghetti and macaroni salad won’t fit their native theme. This made me feel very at home as a local but if you’re a foreigner, I hope you’ll enjoy the exquisiteness of the meal which is exotic to you. But frankly, most of the food served only reached the average mark at most but because of the scenic view, party atmosphere and affordability—every bite was a delight.

Night Cruise

They also offer a night cruise which is perfect for a romantic dinner. We saw several lanterns in the trees during our day trip which I’m sure would look great at night. We were told by one of the staff that the river boasts its other side of beauty at night because of the fireflies coming out its bank regularly. Witnessing the river’s charm in the evening while watching those fireflies glow like constellations would have been a great experience but unfortunately, our time was short for that.

The fun doesn’t stop there because they have a group of singers waiting to serenade you. You can even sing along with them! You don’t need to know their regional language because most of the songs they’re singing are popular English songs. Some even danced with them. All of these reflected the warmth of Filipino hospitality, sense of community and joyful attitude.

A cruise along the river starts either from the Loay Bridge or at the Poblacion of Loboc. The Loay Bridge is 20 kilometers (12 mi) from Tagbilaran City while the Poblacion is about 25 kilometers (16 mi) away. Small motorized bancas can be chartered for a minimal fee. The boats can accommodate up to 50 people.

Balikan kami sa Cebu on May 16. What time kami aalis sa cebu para makahabol mi sa lunch. At update the rates sa cruise with lunch pls

Hi Ms. Beth,

Most ferries from Cebu to Tagbilaran has a travel time of 1 hour and 45 mins. The travel time from Tagbilaran to Loboc is about 20 mins. To make sure that you get there before lunch time, you can depart Cebu City 2 and a half hours before lunch time. I just updated the rates of cruise with lunch. Thanks for letting us know.

Hi me and my mom is planning to visit Bohol this Jan15 and would love to experience your Loboc River Cruise. May I know how to book for this? We are planning to have our lunch there on the 16th since the supercat schedule from cebu to tagbilaran arrival is 10:45am. Hoping for you fast response! :)

hi? ask lang po..paano magbook sa Loboc River Cruise , do you have a number?

My friends and I are planning to experience the night cruise when we will visit bohol this june. I hope you can clarify me with this: is the P300 rate at 6:30pm only for dinner and no cruise at all? hoping for your immediate response…btw, nice post here.

You’re right, the P300.00 rate at 6:30pm is dinner only and we need to pay an additional P350 if we want a dinner with cruise. The total would be P650. If you want your dinner and cruise to have a concert bundled with it, you can save P50 because it’s P800 only based on Package A instead of P850.

The different packages they offer clearly shows us that the cruise is separate from the dinner which is clearly more costly compared to the P350 buffet lunch + cruise. Maybe they set it up this way because there are fewer people who come here at night compared to lunch time. I honestly haven’t tried the night cruise yet because of time constraint but I hope to get that chance later. I’m glad to know that you liked our post. Have a nice stay in Bohol.

We will be visiting Bohol this coming July. Paano po magpareserve ng cruise with lunch?

They don’t have a reservation option for the river cruise. The setup can be compared to riding a jeepney—they simply wait for one boat to get full then off it goes. Then here comes another empty boat with several other empty boats behind it waiting for passengers. I think it’s very unlikely for you to miss a spot even if you come there late.

hello , I would like to enquire about the possibility of taking this cruise, but My hotel will be in Cebu city, so which is the best way to get there??? and what about the schedule ?? thanks.

Hi Stephany,

From Cebu City, take a fastcraft going to Tagbilaran City then hire a taxi or a tricycle to get to Loboc. Tagbilaran City is only 20 mins away from Loboc.

For the complete ferry schedule, please check my post in the link below then scroll down close to the very bottom. https://www.wonderingwanderer.com/bohol-chocolate-hills-resorts/

Hello Going to Bohol from Cebu:

You may check: Ocean Jet, Supercat and some fast craft schedules. Bohol offers one day tour :)

You will enjoy the place and people are very accommodating.

Nice pictures! Your post has more information than the town’s website. We’re thinking of taking the cruise but eating someplace else. But all posts I’ve seen feature the cruise+buffet package. How long does the whole trip take, and would you know how much the motorized boats charge, should we choose to skip the lunch. Thanks! :-)

If my estimate is correct the whole trip takes about one and a half hour. Unfortunately, there’s no option to get the cruise without the lunch bundled. This option only applies during dinner time in their night cruise package options.

We will travelling on nov 3 2013, cebu then nov 4 2013 bohol fo17 with kids can we get discount .

Hi Vanessa,

The kids will definitely have discounts as long as they’re 11 years old and below. Here’s their kid’s rate: Children: 0-3 years old – free without drinks 4-8 years old – 50% with drinks 9-11 years old – P250.00 12 years old and above – P350.00

good evening, we were planning to go in loboc river cruise on oct13 sunday, may i know how much the total rates of the cruise+lunch buffet? thanks and Godbless! :)

Hi Raechelle,

I understand that the list posted above is a bit confusing because it says P350.00 but we need to add the P100.00 for maintenance and security. The final price should be P450.00 per person.

P350.00 – River Cruise and Lunch P100.00 – Maintenance, Safety and Security Charges P450/pax

God bless your trip! :) -EJ

Good day! we’re making an itinerary for a trip of 250 person to Cebu Bohol. Can Loboc Floating Restaurant accommodate that number of pax?

Good day! Wow 250 people, sounds like a company outing! According to a Wikipedia article in the link below, each boat can accommodate up to 50 people only which means you guys will end-up using five boats. There are several boats lining up here daily and I’m sure all of you guys can enjoy this cruise.

Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loboc_River

I recommend that you guys get here earlier than the usual so you can discuss your setup with the Loboc River Cruise management to see if you guys can get a special discount and have boats exclusive for your team instead of getting mixed with other tourists.

Thanks!

Hi Cate, 20 minutes from Tagbilaran airport. Nag-hire kami ng van that time.

NP.

Hi, would you suggest us to book a tour package (via an agency) from Cebu to Bohol for a day tour in Bohol or is it easy to go around the different tourist spots in Bohol on our own? How much would it cost us to hire a van upon arrival in Bohol for 2pax and can we decide where we want to go in Bohol on our own or will the hired van know where to take us? Sorry for asking too many questions. :) Thanks!

No problem. We didn’t book our trip in an agency but what we did is hire a van for P2,000.00. If you’re trying to save, you can consider hiring a tricycle for P1,000.00 but would take you time to get to each tourist spots. Please check our other post below about touring Bohol in the link below: https://www.wonderingwanderer.com/bohol-chocolate-hills-resorts/

Hi po. Clarify ko lng. Ill be there on july 7. Nklagay po kasi sa rate “river cruise and lunch -350 plus 100 for maintenance..so P450 lng po? Please respondu or tx 09488719401. Thank u po

Correct po! 450 lang po.

What particular resto kayo? Anong name?

Wala pong particular name ang floating restaurant po. Kapag punta po kayo sa Loboc River Cruise yung mga floating restaurants parang mga jeep na naghihintay lang mapuno bago umalis.

How do we book for the Loboc River cruise?

Hi Sandrea,

There’s no need to book for the Loboc River Cruise because their floating restaurants are like a queue of taxis waiting to get passengers before they set off. Feel free to visit the site before lunch time to get your tickets and plenty of floating restaurants will be waiting for you. Have a happy trip! :)

Gaano katagal po ung cruising sa Loboc river? Thanks. Would it take 2hours?

Kung tama yung pagkakaalala ko, mga 1.5-2 hours nga kasi may part na hinto pa kayo sa ibang area para manood ng presentations.

Hello! i want to know how we make a reservation for a day cruise and lunch. Do they accept walk-ins? i heard you need to book beforehand. How do we do that?

There’s no need to book in advance for the Loboc River Cruise because their floating restaurants are like a queue of taxis waiting to get passengers before they set off. Feel free to visit the site before lunch time to get your tickets and plenty of floating restaurants will be waiting for you. Have a happy trip! :)

We are planning to take the river night cruise at loboc river. The loboc bohol tourism indicated on their site that night cruise is suspended.. Is this true??

Also, how much is the total night cruise on loboc river per pax??

Thanks in advance!

I saw as well that it’s labeled temporarily suspended in their official website. It’s definitely correct since they’re the one who are actually hosting and providing the Loboc River Cruise services.

The Night Cruise still has the same rates as the one I posted in this blog. The total cost would depend on what package you would pick. But I guess you have to settle for their day-tour for now. Have a nice lunch there! :)

a friend told me that there are 2 loboc river cruise , 1 With turtle shell designs or roof tops for the boats ans 1 with normal roofs.. which one is this

I’m not sure if your system has a problem loading the photos of this site but the roofs are clearly not the turtle shell design.

2k binayan namin that time. Regarding sa pag tour around the island–paki-check na lang po yung link sa baba for the complete guide. Thanks! :) https://www.wonderingwanderer.com/bohol-chocolate-hills-resorts/

Loboc River Cruise in Bohol Schedule and Rates - It's More Fun in the Philippines Tourist Spot

Want to enjoy buffet in a cruise ? More than what Chocolate Hills, Loboc River cruise is great way to experience one of the best tourist spots in Bohol, Philippines. Seafood, local dessert menu, get to listen to a serenade and enjoy the sight seeing of the whole cruise over this exciting river like a revelation of it's rich history on how it came to be.

I can just imagine how long it will take to travel the whole straight of the Loboc River cruise. From here in Manila as I see it by watching Dolce Amore teleserye using our ABS-CBN TV Plus black box , I get so excited to go on a long-time planned trip to Bohol. It will be soon, I know and it will be perfect and very happy which I will share on this very page in the near future.

Map and How to Get There

Loboc River Cruise

Enjoying any tourist spot or special place during a vacation or travel in the Philippines is all about preparation. Although many would prefer the surprises that being unprepared offers, we cannot rule out the fact that in any travel, preparations always make a perfect place just right for the right time and make the right people out of us. With this, below is a guide map and how to get there at the port to ride the floating restaurant. Our family hopes you enjoy your trip to Bohol , Philippines in the Visayas region.

To get to Loboc River cruise port and go onboard its floating restaurant, from Tagbilaran airport strip, it is about 41 minutes travel if there is no traffic. But there is actually another way to get there which the better and more adventurous and scenic travel along the shores of the historical Baclayon Church and Loay, Bohol taking the route of the Circumferential Road. The latter is a 44 minute travel by car and that is just a mere 3 minute difference but with a more fun trip.

If you are asking when is it best to go to Bohol to enjoy the floating restaurant, other tourist spots like the Chocolate Hills and the Loboc River Cruise, I personally recommend going during the summer months in the Philippines which is from March till June. After that, rain starts to fall and you'll definitely be turned off of the unlikely weather in the Philippines after June.

Reminder : Many people and tourists also call and refer to the Loboc River cruise as the Loay River cruise because you are actually taking the tour along its interior road and take off point is from the Loay Port.

Loboc River Cruise Schedule, Rates, Route, Photos and How to Reserve

The route of Loboc River Cruise is actually just like any kayak trip one can take. It is a slow moving cruise along the river of Loay locality. Just like any other rivers in the Visayas, the cruise is no short than breath-taking but common to the locals who frequently take a peek and enjoy it just like any other travels in the Philippines .

By estimates using Google Map road trip, the travel by road of the Loay Interior Road takes about 1 hour 11 minutes but judging from the length of the river, for a cruise to take out the whole span, it might probably take more than 1 hour 30 minutes to finish. I am not so sure where the cruise ends but if it is coming from the Loboc church and river watch area to the commercial port in Loay, it might take maybe up to 2 hours.

Looking at the available photos online, I saw some pictures that indicates there were actually about 6 floating restaurants touring the whole Loay River for the cruise visitors and tourists who want to enjoy the sight seeing in the river while dining in buffet style Filipino food recipes (which may at times include native and local Boholano dishes) with fresh coconut juice, seafood and more. At night, the river seems like paradise.

About the Floating Restaurant - Menu, Accommodation and Latest Food Price or Cost Ideas

Apart from live music and performance from local Bohol cruise resident musicians and singers, the buffet food offer is one of the best attractions when in this cruise. We have searched and scoured online blogs and websites that featured reviews of the floating restaurant and below are some of the ideas of what kind f food they give to tourists who embark on an unknown journey to the straits of Loboc River. Below are just some to give you, our readers an idea.

For a lunch buffet at the floating restaurant, back in 2013, it will cost you about Php 450.00 that a Php 300.00 Philippine pesos for the buffet food and Php 150.00 for the cruise trip fee. Food includes the usual pancit, soup, barbecue, fresh buco juice, bananas and native Pinoy cooking dishes. While on this trip, expect to say that this is what it is about the Philippines that foreigners love -simplicity and uniqueness.

Loay River Cruise: More Than Just a Classic Filipino Lunch

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Is there anything more satisfying than having a sumptuous traditional Filipino lunch to satisfy a grumbling stomach after an entire morning of road tripping? It turns out that there actually is! Imagine eating delicious classic Filipino viands and sweet tropical fruits while cruising slowly down a pristine, scenic river. All the while, you are serenaded by an eclectic blend of folk and pop songs!

Well, you can have that unique experience in the quiet municipality of Loay, Bohol. With just a few hundred pesos, you can enjoy more than just a tasty lunch!

After learning how calamay is made and buying some pasalubong at the Albur Calamay Manufacturing plant, we headed down to Loay River to take our lunch. We arrived at the staging point at around 10AM, a tad too early for lunch.

So, we decided to check out the place first. Adjacent to the parking area is a souvenir shop where you can get more pasalubongs and trinkets.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Loay River, as we learned, is a misnomer. The river is actually part of Loboc River and not a separate waterway. Loay is the name of a municipality of Bohol.

A low truss bridge connects the river banks to each other.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

The starting point of the tour is right at the Loboc River’s mouth. Thus, it is not surprising that we found colorful fishing boats of all sizes docked to both river banks. Larger fishing trawlers are also docked there; these vessels can stay in the open sea for weeks at a time to acquire a bigger catch.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

At present, the sole operator of the river cruise is Rio Verde Floating Resto. In the coming years, we believe that there will be more operators coming, which will result in a healthy competition.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Even though lunch was not yet ready (and we were the very first customers of the day) and the business is still closed for the day, Rio Verde’s staff allowed us to pay ahead of time. Great! We don’t have to line up.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

While waiting for boarding time, the ladies had fun taking souvenir photos. Polished bamboo chairs and benches are available for the guests’ comfort.

I was getting a little bit bored when I heard a familiar sound at the security outpost above the waiting area. It turned out that an off-duty security guy was watching one of my favorite shows. So, I slithered away from the girls and watched Behind Enemy Lines with the off-duty guard. Hehehe!

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Great timing! As soon as Behind Enemy Lines was finished, Sheila called me to announce that it was time to board. Whoopee, because we’re getting hungry! Hehehe!

We walked down this gangplank to board our large lunch barge, which can accommodate about 50 to 60 people.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

The Pawikan barges are so-named due to their roofs which are made to resemble pawikans (sea turtles). There are more varieties of dishes served for those who avail of the menu in Pawikan barges.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Smaller barges are for private parties such as families, group of friends, or colleagues. They need to be reserved in advance.

These barges are designed to resemble coconut shells that contain calamay , one of Bohol’s most tasty delicacies.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Each barge is pushed by a small slow boat with an intentionally under-powered engine for a slow, smooth ride.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Since we were among the first to board the barge, we had the opportunity to take first dibs on food. All meals are served in covered trays or under cling wraps to prevent flies from landing on the food.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Most of the meals being served are traditional Filipino viands such as calamares (slices of squid dipped in batter and deep fried), barbecue, fried chicken, and more. Foreigners who want to have a taste of Filipino food while enjoying a relaxing country scene are encouraged to check out this floating resto.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

This is one of my favorites—delectable baby squid being sauteed in a spicy concoction of garlic, peppers, onions, and broth.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

That is hot, freshly boiled ginataang langka —chunks of jack fruit boiled in coconut milk and garnished with black beans, lemongrass, and other spices. Yummy!

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

We waited for about half an hour for other people to fill up the barge. Thereafter, the engine rumbled to life and settled down on a steady mutter. The lines were cast off, and we started sailing on the calm, majestic Loboc River.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

What a gorgeous, verdant river! Each side is teeming with mangroves, sea palms, and other river-borne vegetation. The unspoiled greenery meant one thing; there is a very healthy ecosystem that is preserved in this part of Loboc River.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

In some parts of the river, we saw soft limestone cliffs being slowly revealed as rainwater washes away the layer of topsoil.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Floating resto barges are not the only vessels plying along Loboc River. Humble families of fishermen ride their small outrigger boats in search for fish. Considering how the pristine waterway and the surrounding virgin mangroves are well taken care of, it should come to no surprise to realize that the river has a rich bounty of fish.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

How about some great live music while you eat your lunch? This old local plays novelty tunes, folk songs, and foreign oldies to keep guests entertained. He even sang a Korean love song when he spotted a few Koreans in the barge.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

There’s nothing more relaxing than eating a sumptuous mid-day meal while slowly cruising down a clean, calm river—all the while being serenaded by an expert local musician.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

We were not alone who enjoyed this experience. Foreign and local guests ate with audible gusto while totally immersing in the rejuvenating experience.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

We were so delightfully full that it seemed like we’re going to burst if we have to devour another bite. But we just couldn’t resist eating a healthy serving of these juicy tropical fruits and luscious Filipino desserts.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

A few miles away from the jump-off, our barge slowly steered left from the center of the river to this tree-covered village of some sort. Is the tour supposed to end here? We hope not since it’s a long way back to the jump-off point.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

It turned out that this is a faithful replica of a village that belongs to the Ati Tribe, a local tribe that makes this river their home. The caretakers of this stopover are genuine Ati people. Although they have been exposed and adapted to modern society, this replica village allows us to have a glimpse into the past.

The LGU and the regional tourism department have purposely set up this Ati Village to promote Bohol’s cultural heritage and to provide financial assistance to the Ati tribe.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Replicas of Ati huts are constructed on the village. We would have gone in, but it was raining heavily.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

When we approached the Ati village, we heard a tribal, rhythmic beat that, for some reason, made us unconsciously tap our feet. Well, it came from these large drums.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Thirsty? Tired of water or soft drinks? No worries, the Ati tribe sells fresh coconut juice to quench your thirst. Don’t you know that buko juice contains a rich quantity of electrolytes and mineral salts? Yes, coconut water is dubbed as Mother Nature’s energy drink!

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Before you leave the Ati village, do buy one of these bow-arrow-and-quiver set as a souvenir. Your purchase would definitely help the Atis in their daily expenditures.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

After spending half an hour in the replica village, we re-boarded the barge. We found out that the Ati village was the last point of this tour, and the barge made a U-turn to head back to port.

Check out those green mangroves with the palm leaves.

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

After awhile, we saw the Loay bridge in the distance. We had a filling lunch and a relaxing cruise, which refilled our depleted energy stores so we can be ready for the next leg of our weekend adventure !

Rio Grande Loay River Cruise

Our verdict? Taking your buffet lunch in the Rio Verde Floating Resto along the Loboc River is an experience that you should not miss. The traditional Filipino food is so-so but filling; we have eaten better Filipino meals elsewhere. But the feeling of serenity as you cruise along a clean river, looking at blue mountains in the distance, while taking lunch is something extraordinary. The live music entertainment is a welcome addition, and a visit to the Ati Village caps the adventure.

In other words, you get more than just a hearty lunch!

*Note that rates and menu items may change without prior notice. Contact Rio Verde Floating Resto for updated details.

4. To enjoy the cruise, we suggest you take your lunch as soon as you board the barge. It takes around 30 minutes or more for the barge to fill up, so that will give you enough time to fill your tummy up. Once the cruise starts, the meal is out of the way, and you can focus more on the river.

5. Observe LNT principles. Do not throw your trash in the river.

very nice read. i only tried the Loboc River Cruise where there was a cultural show before the boat returns to its originalpoint. Loay’s version seems to be equally interesting. Thank you for sharing!

' src=

The Loay River cruise is a nice alternative to the standard Loboc River cruise. The latter is now crowded and cliche.

' src=

I’ve tried Loboc River Cruise once and I have the same comment: the food is so-so but you get to enjoy the scenery, music and warm hospitality of the Boholanos.

You’re right; the food is filling and delicious, but not particularly unique or spectacular. It’s the experience of cruising the river while enjoying the scenery that really makes this moving lunch unique.

' src=

I’m a little bit disappointed visiting Bohol at first since I’m expecting so much to see a lot of tarsiers. But when I cruised the river, it’s an experience. We tried the Loboc River and on our to the port we’ve seen this Loay. Thanks for sharing, maybe if I have another adventure in Bohol, I’ll try this. BTW it’s a little bit expensive compared to Loboc.

Hi Step lost Voyage,

We believe they have a large tarsier sanctuary, but we didn’t get to visit it. We only visited the small sanctuary at Sagbayan Peak.

We didn’t try the Loboc River cruise as it was a little too mainstream for us. So we can’t compare the price. Even then, for us, a few extra pesos wouldn’t hurt as the experience is more valuable.

' src=

I tried the Loboc cruise in 2014, Gian and Sheila. Nice experience, I feasted on unlimited crabs. Haha. Didn’t enjoy the river much because of the chocolate-brown water after the typhoon. Next week, will try the Loay version. High expectations. 🙂

Wow! Crabs! Yummy! We haven’t tried the Loboc river cruise yet. Perhaps when we go back there, we can check it out. 🙂

Well, as what we mentioned in the blog, the food is so-so; we can eat those kinds of food anywhere. It’s the cruise along the river, just like Loboc’s, that makes it special. 🙂

Don’t forget to visit the replica tribe village. 🙂

' src=

Can you get a beer on board?!

Hi Francis,

Hahaha! In all honesty, we don’t know; we are alcohol-intolerant.

But you can get in touch with Rio Verde Floating Resto for inquiries. Their numbers and contact details are in this blog post. 🙂

' src=

What’s he difference between the High-end and Regular buffet?

Probably the menu and the boat where you will take your lunch. Please check the Tips section.

We had an entertaining tour guide/driver. He is very knowledgeable of the city and took us to different interesting sites and told stories about them. The River Cruise lunch was enjoyable and entertaining.

The schedule throughout the day was flexible. Our tour set off at 10:30 am from the location that we decided on, the guide person was on time to arrive. The first stop was able to see the butterfly. eagle and snakes. We enjoyed the Loboc River Cruise Lunch tour so much. After lunch, we went to the man-made forest and took some nice pictures as we had been here. Those tarsiers are barely able to see them, but they are cute. The next we went to Chap to ride the bike zip line. Even though it’s super scary, we feel super memorable about it. Last, we went to Chocolate Hills and could feel the landscape on top of the mountain.more senior. The guide person was super patient in answering all the questions and even brought us to the local fruit market to buy fruits that we wanted to eat. Those experiences make us feel unforgettable due to the guide’s profession. We’d likely to strongly recommend this tour.
