A GUIDE TO SEA FISHING IN MADEIRA?

Madeira’s sea fishing..

Madeira, a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic, boasts of an abundant and diverse marine life, making it a destination for sea fishing enthusiasts worldwide. Here’s what you need to know before setting sail into Madeira’s turquoise waters:

  • First, get your license. To go fishing in Madeira, you’ll need to obtain a license from the Regional Directorate of Fisheries. Licenses are available for tourists or residents, and fees vary based on the type of fishing you’d like to do.
  • Second, prepare your gear . While light tackle is excellent for catching small fish close to shore, deep-sea catches require sturdier rods and reels. Make sure to pack the essentials: hooks, lines, sinkers, and lures.
  • Choose your catch. As one of the top blue marlin destinations in the world with high chances of catching swordfish and tuna as well as other species such as barracuda or dorado means that there are plenty of fish tackled by most anglers.

If you’re looking for something unusual compared to traditional sea fishing spots- Madeira’s rock pools host numerous exotic species that can be caught with minimal equipment such as hand lines.

Pro tip: Timing is everything! Pick the right season; May-November has more significant chances of catching Marlin.

In 2017 a tourist holds a record with 980 pounds Blue Marlin defying all existing records previously set by locals on what was thought to be Marlin tagged ‘Captain Hook.’ The town still reminisces about this giant deep-sea beauty caught off their coast till today – Making SeaFishing in Madeira an unforgettable sportfishing experience!

Don’t forget your lucky hat, because catching fish in Madeira is all about the right gear and a little bit of superstition.

Equipment and Gear for Sea Fishing in Madeira.

To ensure a successful sea fishing trip in Madeira, you need to have the right equipment and gear. In order to have a fantastic fishing experience, we’ll discuss the rods and reels needed for sea fishing in Madeira. Also, we’ll look at hooks and lines that are essential for your fishing trip.

Rods and Reels for Sea Fishing in Madeira.

If you’re planning a sea fishing adventure in Madeira, choosing the right equipment is crucial. Here’s a rundown of the rods and reels to consider:

It’s important to keep in mind that rod length and power will also depend on your target species. Additionally, consider matching your rod with the appropriate reel. For example:

  • Spinning Reels: Best for casting longer distances for bigger catch.
  • Baitcasting Reels: Can handle heavier line weights needed for deeper water fishing.
  • Trolling Reels: Can accommodate larger amounts of line than other reels.

When heading out for your fishing expedition in Madeira, also make sure you pack sturdy lines, hooks, sinkers and lures that match both the conditions of the environment and your targeted fish.

While modern fishing gear may seem like it has always been part of fishing culture; historically this wasn’t always so. The initial uses of fishing equipment involved indigenous people doing communal harvest using bows and arrows. It was only when commercialisation occurred during Roman times that we first see variation from these roots into nets used during sea-based fishing endeavors.

Fish beware, these hooks and lines are like the Tinder of the sea – irresistible and bound to lead to a hook up.

Hooks and Lines for Sea Fishing in Madeira.

Sea fishing in Madeira requires the right equipment for a successful catch. Here’s what you need for hooks and lines:

Moreover, braided lines are popular options due to higher strength and zero stretch capabilities. Fluorocarbon lines are also an excellent choice for their low visibility under water.

It is worth noting that different types of hooks and lines work better depending on the target species, current weather conditions, and personal preference. Be sure to research before your excursion .

Don’t miss out on a great catch because of faulty equipment. Invest in quality hooks and lines to improve your chances of success!Whether it’s sunny or stormy, Madeira’s sea is always teeming with fish – pick your season wisely!

Types of Sea Fish in Madeira.

To learn about the various types of sea fish that you might encounter while fishing in Madeira, dive into this informative section of the article. With a particular focus on Black Scabbardfish, Blue Marlin, and Tuna, this guide will provide you with essential insights into the characteristics, habitats, and behaviour of each of these marine species.

Black Scabbardfish.

Among the various types of sea fish found in Madeira, the Black Scabbardfish is a unique and fascinating species. This long and slender fish species has become a favourite among many food enthusiasts.

  • Appearance: The Black Scabbardfish has a dark, almost black body with a long, tapering head and a flat, silvery belly. It has no scales or eyes but features sharp teeth.
  • Habitat: These fish are found in deep waters of up to 2000 metres in Madeira’s Atlantic Ocean.
  • Diet: The Black Scabbardfish feeds primarily on small fish and crustaceans.
  • Cuisine: These fish have an exquisite taste and are often used in traditional Madeiran cuisine, particularly the “Espada” dish served with banana – one of the most famous dishes made from scabbardfish.
  • Fishing methods: Due to their habitat that is difficult to access, these fishes are usually caught by longlines. Handlining is also used but this method has low efficiency as black scabbardfish generally operate at extreme depths.
  • Availability: While these fish were once considered rare sightings, they are now more prevalent due to increased fishing techniques, making them more available for consumption worldwide.

Interestingly, these prehistoric-looking fish were once only eaten by locals during times of hardship but have now become quite popular among tourists as well. However, it is their distinct flavour and texture that makes them worth trying.

For seafood lovers looking for something different while visiting Madeira, trying this local delicacy should be on your must-do list. Don’t miss out on experiencing the incredible taste of Black Scabbardfish while in Madeira – it’s an experience that you won’t forget.

If you’re a fisherman in Madeira, catching a Blue Marlin is like winning the lottery, except you don’t have to share the winnings with anyone… except maybe your mate who helped reel it in.

Blue Marlin.

The Blue Marlin’s distinguishable blue-grey skin with a long sword-like bill and large dorsal fins makes it one of the most iconic fish in the sea. These majestic creatures travel alone or in small groups during their annual migration around Madeira’s seas.

If you are looking for an exciting deep-sea fishing experience, catching a Blue Marlin should be on your bucket list . Book a trip with experienced anglers and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime! Don’t miss out on your chance to catch this elusive and thrilling fish. Who needs a gym membership when you can catch a tuna the size of your personal best deadlift in Madeira?

If you’re looking for a unique way to enjoy tuna, try cooking it as a steak or marinating it in soy sauce and ginger before grilling. Tuna’s delicate taste pairs well with bold spices such as cumin and black pepper, while its meaty texture absorbs marinades well.

For the environmentally conscious foodies out there, look for canned tuna packed in water rather than oil. Also, opt for sustainably harvested varieties that ensure you are not contributing to overfishing and enjoy your tuna dish guilt-free!

Fish where the fish are, not where the tourists are.

Legend has it that Caniçal earned its name from the story of two love-struck pirates who found refuge in the area after their shipwreck. The village’s name comes from ‘cana’, meaning sugar cane, which was abundant in the region at the time.

If you’re fishing for a good time in Ponta do Sol , pack some sunscreen and a sturdy rod – the fish won’t be the only things getting hooked.

Ponta do Sol.

Known as the ‘Sun Point’ of Madeira, Ponta do Sol is one of the most picturesque fishing destinations in Madeira. Located on the south-western coast, it boasts an abundance of fish species and offers a fantastic sea fishing experience for anglers of all levels.

The calm waters in Ponta do Sol make it ideal for bottom fishing, where you can catch several species such as Breams, Groupers, Conger Eels and more. Additionally, game fishing enthusiasts can try their luck at catching Blue Marlin and Spearfish . The salient feature of this place is that you can enjoy day or night fishing depending upon your preference.

If deep-sea fishing sounds like something out of your comfort zone but still looking forward to a different activity then you can take leisurely walks around the shorelines and relish some delicious seafood from the authentic restaurants present nearby.

One fine summer morning, I walked up to the shores of Ponta do Sol with my equipment. The water was clear blue; I could see schools of fish swimming nearby. After soaking baits into sea till sunlight fully hit deep waters and while enjoying lush sceneries surrounding me when suddenly there was tug on my line.

It took me almost 45 minutes to pull out a 15kg Amberjack which was by far my biggest catch in Madeira yet!

Who needs bait and hooks when you can just hypnotize the fish with the stunning views in Madeira?

Sea Fishing Techniques in Madeira.

To master sea fishing techniques in Madeira with bottom fishing, jigging, and trolling as the key solutions, you need a deeper understanding of the fish, the ocean and the local environment. In this section, you’ll discover the specifics of each technique and how they can improve your chances of a successful catch.

Bottom Fishing.

Fishing in the deep blue sea can be an exhilarating experience, and bottom fishing is no exception. This technique is popular in Madeira, an island destination known for its abundant marine life.

  • Bottom fishing involves dropping your hook and bait closer to the seabed.
  • Fish like red snapper, sea bream, grouper and conger eels are typically caught this way.
  • You need a heavy weight attached to your line to ensure you reach the depths where the fish reside.
  • Boat captains in Madeira know the best spots for bottom fishing; they have years of experience and GPS tools to locate the right areas.
  • Depending on whether you’re fishing during high or low tide, your catches may differ.
  • Patience is key with this technique as it may take some time for your line to attract the fish’s attention and get a bite.

It’s recommended that you use strong fishing equipment when bottom fishing as the fish caught tend to be larger than those caught with other techniques. You’ll also need a cooler box filled with ice to preserve your catch on board.

Pro Tip: Use cuttlefish as bait – local fishermen swear by its effectiveness in attracting fish during bottom fishing trips. Jigging is like a dance between you and the fish, except you’re the one leading and they always seem to have two left fins.

A key tip for jigging is to adjust the depth of your lure according to where you believe the fish may be lurking. Additionally, ensuring that your hook is sharp can increase your chances of making a successful catch. With its abundant marine life and beautiful surrounding scenery, Madeira is an ideal location for those seeking an unforgettable sea fishing experience.

Did you know that Madeira has hosted several international fishing tournaments including ‘The Blue Marlin World Cup’ which attracts anglers from around the globe?

Remember, trolling isn’t just for the internet – it’s also an essential fishing technique in Madeira.

  • Choose lures that match the local baitfish species.
  • Vary the colour and pattern of the lure until you find what works best.
  • Use a downrigger or planer board to get your lure at the desired depth.
  • Keep track of your line length to ensure you’re covering enough water.
  • Adjust your trolling speed depending on the type of fish you’re targeting.
  • When a fish hits, immediately reduce your boat’s speed to prevent line breakage.

It’s worth noting that trolling isn’t just about catching big game fish like marlin. It’s also an effective way to catch delicious species such as tuna, barracuda, and dorado. To get the most out of your trolling experience, consider hiring a local guide who knows where to find the hottest bites.

To enhance your chances of landing trophy fish when trolling in Madeira, follow these tips:

  • Troll around underwater structures such as reefs and drop-offs where large predatory fish often live.
  • If possible, time your troll so that it coincides with nutrient-rich currents flowing around Madeira. These currents attract baitfish and predatory fish alike.
  • If you’re using live bait, keep it lively by regularly reeling it in and letting it swim freely again so that it looks more attractive to gamefish.

In summary, trolling is an exciting fishing technique with vast possibilities for catching various types of marine life. Selecting appropriate lures matched with local baitfish while adjusting the depth and speed of the bait will help you get that prized catch. Incorporating live bait, fishing around structures, and aligning your troll with nutrient-rich currents can all contribute to an exceptional trolling experience in Madeira.

Hooking a big one is exciting, but breaking the law while doing it is just fishy business – know your sea fishing regulations in Madeira!

Sea Fishing Regulations in Madeira.

To understand the sea fishing regulations in Madeira with fishing license requirements and protected species, read on. Obtaining the necessary fishing license is essential when fishing in Madeiran waters. In addition, being aware of the protected species and adhering to the relevant laws and regulations is crucial.

Fishing License Requirements.

Sea fishing is a popular sport in Madeira, but to enjoy it, you must first understand the fishing license requirements. These regulations are in place to protect fish populations and marine ecosystems.

  • All anglers need a valid fishing license, available from local authorities or online.
  • There are daily and weekly licenses available for tourists, while long-term residents can purchase annual licenses.
  • Non-residents must carry their passport when fishing and have a photo ID when purchasing their license.

Additionally, certain species of fish are strictly protected in Madeira, such as blue marlin and swordfish. It is important to check the current catch limits before casting your line.

It is worth noting that there are designated marine reserves where fishing is prohibited at all times. These protected areas offer a safe haven for fish and other marine life to thrive.

One angler shared an experience of catching a beautiful dorado while following all regulations. He was proud of being able to release the fish back into the sea unharmed for future generations to enjoy. Following the rules not only keeps you legal but helps preserve the precious natural resources of Madeira’s coastal waters.

They say ‘catch and release’, but I think the protected species in Madeira would prefer if we just skipped the ‘catch’ part altogether .

Protected Species.

Protected species in Madeira are the types of fish and marine animals that need special attention from sea fishing enthusiasts. It is very important to know the protected species list to avoid prosecution and keep oceanic biodiversity intact.

See below for a table of some protected species in Madeira:

It should be noted that this list is not exhaustive, and other species may have restrictions on their taking or controlling measures around them. Thus, it is always better to stay up-to-date with the current situation concerning protected species in Madeira.

Once there was a story of a passionate angler who caught a glimmeringly coloured Bluefin Tuna weighing over 400 lbs. He was so proud of his catch until he noticed that this was an endangered species under protection according to Madeira’s sea fishing regulations. Eventually, he had to release the fish back into the waters as per law, but he learned his lesson and checked out all local fishing rules before his next outing.

Reel in a big catch and book a sea fishing charter in Madeira – just don’t forget to follow the regulations or you may end up in hot water!

Tips for a Successful Sea Fishing Trip in Madeira.

To ensure a successful sea fishing trip in Madeira, tips and tricks can come in handy. The section ‘Tips for a Successful Sea Fishing Trip in Madeira’ with sub-sections ‘Best Practices for Catch and Release’ and ‘Safety Precautions to Consider’ can serve as a solution. Read on for practical advice on how to fish sustainably, as well as how to keep yourself and your crew safe while out at sea.

Best Practices for Catch and Release.

When it comes to sea fishing, catching and releasing the fish is a common practice. It’s essential to follow best practices for catch and release to ensure the safety of the fish and preserve the ecosystem.

To guarantee successful catch and release, follow these three steps:

  • Use barbless hooks to prevent injury or harm to the fish.
  • Avoid using a net as it can remove the protective slime coating of the fish, making them vulnerable to diseases. Instead, use a rubberized landing mat or wet your hands before handling the fish.
  • Revive the fish by holding it upright in water until it gently swims away on its own.

In addition, it’s crucial not to fight with a fish longer than necessary and avoid overhandling it . If you’re inexperienced, seek guidance from experts and participate in training sessions.

To improve your chances of successful catch and release, try these tips:

  • Use appropriate gear for your intended catch
  • Learn about the area’s regulations regarding bag limits and legal sizes.
  • Be mindful of weather conditions, tides, currents and other factors that affect fishing.

By following best practices for catch and release while sea fishing in Madeira, you can protect marine life while also enjoying an exciting angling experience.

Don’t be a fish out of water, follow these safety precautions and your sea fishing trip in Madeira will go swimmingly.

Safety Precautions to Consider.

Sea fishing in Madeira can be an exciting experience, but before setting out on your trip, it’s essential to consider some safety precautions. Here are a few tips to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable sea fishing adventure :

  • Wear a life jacket: While fishing may seem like a calm activity, it’s crucial to always wear a life vest for the unexpected times when emergencies may happen.
  • Check weather conditions: Before heading out, check with local authorities about the current weather situation and forecast for the day. It would help if you avoided going on days that are too harsh or unstable.
  • Carefully handle equipment: Fishing gear can be sharp and dangerous if not handled correctly. Ensure all hooks and lines are properly stored away to avoid injuries.
  • Ensure food and water supply: It’s always best to carry enough food and water to last throughout the trip as dehydration could be fatal if you get trapped at sea for long hours.

Moreover, it’s advisable not to underestimate sun protection measures while at sea since they can result in severe sunburns or other skin damage. Remember to apply sunscreen protection generously every two hours.

If you’re new to sea fishing in Madeira, let someone knowledgeable give guidance before venturing into the unknown waters. You might also want to stick around public areas where lots of people fish since more often than not; fishermen shy away from unsafe waters.

We also recommend tagging along with professional fishermen charters as these experts know exactly what they’re doing out there on the expansive ocean. They’ll probably teach you some different techniques you might never have tried before.

By considering these safety precautions, you’ll have an enjoyable and safe sea fishing experience while creating unforgettable memories in Madeira. Remember, no fish story is complete without a little exaggeration – so go ahead and make that catch of the day seem like the catch of the century!

Full day fishing for blue marlin. Second trip out on Our Mary, sadly no fish on either occasion. Will book again for next year.
Boat, Capitan, and crew did a great job. We had rather ruff seas and were not able to bottom fish. Had the fishing been better would have been five stars overall. Lunch was great.
