Madrid of the Habsburg

Madrid became the capital of spain in the 16th century. this happened while the spanish empire was reaching its largest dimension. this was a kingdom where german, spanish and portuguese territories were part of one single empire. at the same time, spanish culture reached its utmost splendor, an era called “el siglo de oro” (the golden century), that in fact spread along not just one century but two, the 16th and 17 th centuries..

The Gran Via rooftop tour is excellent. One of the best tours we have done in a long time. Emilio is a fantastic guide. His knowledge of Madrid's architecture and history is impressive. My partner is Brazilian. Knowing that, Emilio made an effort and took extra time to explain the history of Madrid since very beginning (Arabic times) and therefore contextualize better Gran Via's architecture and history. I strongly recommend this tour to anyone either from Madrid or not ! Read more Written January 13, 2024

  • Wunderlust27 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Engaging, absorbing, very informative Emilio gave a very interesting and informative tour. His knowledge and passion for Madrid architecture was impressive and his sincerity makes the tour very engaging. It was very detailed, relevant and very expansive. We absolutely loved the tour and gained so much from it. This is the second tour we have done with Emilio, the first was a tour of the Lavapíes area, and it was as good as the first. I highly recommend Emilio as a guide. Thank you so much Read more Written September 24, 2023
  • christopherj91 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Delightful introduction to Madrid's history through its architecture We enjoyed this tour of Madrid and thought it was a great introduction to the city and learning about its rich history. The buildings we toured were beautiful and we had a leisurely walk enjoying the uniqueness of each one. Emilio took his time with our group and answered all our questions. He provided a wealth of history about Spain and the settlement of Madrid. We especially appreciated the last stop that included a wonderful rooftop view of the city and the forest to the west. We also liked Emilio's booklet with old photos of Madrid so we could see how the buildings looked in prior years. We highly recommend this tour and it's a great way to spend some time in Madrid. • 909diept 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Learned a lot about the history of Madrid Great experience! Emilio was very knowledgeable, not only about the city’s architecture but also its history. I went on 4 different tours in Madrid (tuktuk, walking tour, etc.) and I learned the most on this tour. Now keep in mind Emilio’s accent is a little thick, so if you’re not good with accents it might be a little difficult to follow along in the beginning, but after 15 mins we get used to it. Plus he brought along a book of slides he made on the topic making it much easier to follow along. Now that we are visiting other cities on the trip, every time I look up at a building I would wonder what kind of architecture this is, does that mean it was built in century XX, etc. Emilio taught us not only about the architecture of Madrid, but also how to look at every city in Europe you go to through the lens of architecture. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Madrid 😊 Read more Written September 19, 2022

  • Linda D 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Distinguishing Madrid's Neighborhoods' with Architecture Emilio was a wonderful guide and his perspective as an architect provided tremendous insight beyond the traditional historical information of a walking tour. He also provided a tailored experience for us, since we will be returning to Madrid with a group of students. We were just off the airplane from California, but he kept us moving and interested in a neighborhood I had not spent much time in before. We enjoyed his lunch and museum recommendations as well. Muchas gracias Emilio! Read more Written October 5, 2021
  • 382blythem 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Interested in architecture? This tour is for you! Emilio was our guide. He has extensive knowledge of the historical use of buildings along Gran Via as well as architectural expertise. We started and ended the tour on rooftops with spectacular views on each end of Gran Via. He spent a lot of time with us (more than expected). The tour was extremely interesting if you love architecture and urban planning. Read more Written September 22, 2021
  • dennisj879 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantástico Emilio is fantastic. I took a tour with him actually before the pandemic, but the site doesn't allow me to go that far back. I've owed him this review for a long time! He is personable, knowledgeable, accommodating, and patient. He went out of his way to gain special access to a tall building's rooftop. He's known and respected in the area. The views were fantastic. Emilio shared with me a fair amount of the history of Gran Via, the development, the redevelopment, the economy. It was all very interesting -- It was in the 90s F, so it was pretty hot. I highly recommend him! Read more Written August 5, 2021

  • 240JoseG 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A top experience Highly recommendable. Great opportunity to experience Madrid in a different way with a personalized tour, we were only 4 people. Lots of details and interesting facts to know about the history and development of one of the most emblematic streets in Madrid and the urban development of Madrid itself. Very professional and caring, we actually finished way behind schedule because of the amount of details and things we saw. Indeed we had the chance to see an exhibit for free. Great value for money. We never would have seen any of this without Emilio, and his architectural history taught us so much in a very interactive way as we were seeing it all from the tops of the buildings! WOW! “This tour hosted by our guide Emilio was the perfect way to get to know the lively area of the Gran Via of Madrid. From breathtaking bird eye views atop the terraces of some of Madrid’s most iconic buildings to the discreet little boutiques where we discovered hidden architectural gems, every aspect of this grand avenue was commented and put in a historical context by our guide. Emilio is passionate about his city and he drew the overall picture but he also pimped up his tour with entertaining anecdotes and insiders’ information. I would certainly recommend Architour for anyone interested in knowing the city better and from a different perspective, be it local, tourists from Spain or from abroad. Well worth the money, can’t wait to book another tour on my next visit”. Jhon | USA 2020 airbnb experinces *****

“Thank you so much for all your help, I can’t imagine doing the congress without your help, I think I would go crazy!! All our best to you, Fernanda, Cristina and Jordi!”
Dear Artchitectours, We definitely had a good time and the guides were great.  We will send you some pictures soon. Hopefully we will be able to work with you again in the future. Thank you and regards.
It was a wonderful experience. Excellent trip! An unforgettable one! Besides the interesting tour we had an amazing and beautiful interaction inside the group ( we laughed and enjoyed the company of each other as we were a one little closed family 🙂 In my opinion this (the closed relationship among the group) was an positive additive element in this trip which can’t be ignored! It made the tour even more greater .. 🙂 … To suffice, I would like to thank you and all the crew for what you planed and gave to us . It will always stay as unforgettable trip and with good memories.
Hello, It was wonderful, we learned a lot, it exceeded or expectations, thanks and see you next time! Herbert
“En varias ocasiones tanto como escuela o en tours más pequeños he utilizado los servicios y asesoría de Jordi. Los viajes han todos resultado impecables tanto en las recomendaciones como en la organización, jamás un problema de ningún tipo. Los recomiendo de la manera más amplia, a Jordi y su equipo, que son muy profesionales y serios, sin ninguna duda.”
“Thank you so much for the tour today. Absolutely fabulous! A tour is only as good as the guide and that tour was one of the highlights of the trip. The architecture might have helped a little bit 😉 but you brought it to life. ¡Gracias gracias gracias!”
We had a wonderful time in Chandigarh! Thank you for setting this up!!
Just wanted to let you know we had the most amazing day today with Gabriel in Brasilia– it far exceeded our expectations. Regards Steph
We enjoyed our trip to Brasil very much. Wonderful country, great architecture and good company! We wish to thank you for your professional organisation.
Hi Artchitectours, I’m in São Paulo now, but my stay in Brasilia was fantastic. I cannot say enough good things about Gabriel; he was the most lovely, knowledgeable, accommodating guide I could have asked for.  We had a great time and I will be sure to recommend you and your company to anyone traveling here. What other  cities/countries do you operate in? Anyway, thank you for facilitating.  It was well worth it. My best, Martin
Mil gracias a ti y a Daniel 🙂
Dear Marta, Thank you for working so tirelessly to help make the first international trip for Dar Al-Hekma University’s Architecture Department so successful!  I apologize for any inconvenience related to our requested changes in the itinerary.  In the future, we will have a much better idea of the interests and capacity of the students. We learned that students can only absorb so many buildings at a time and need more free time to explore interesting neighborhoods during guided tours.  In any event, the students absolutely loved Spain and several plan to return in the near future!  The people we met were extremely kind and generous.  We truly appreciate the efforts of you and your team on our behalf. Sincerely, Tamsen
“Nous revenons de Séville, les yeux pleins d’images qui resteront dans nos esprits. Le séjour s’est très bien déroulé à l’hôtel EME, le guide Daniel, particulièrement sympa et avons beaucoup apprécié la collation dans le bus de Reims a Orly.”

The Prado National Museum is one of the world’s leading galleries, with a superb collection from the 12th century to the early 19th century. Among the masterpieces are works by Bosch, El Greco, Goya, Raphael, Rubens, Titian, Van Eyck, Velázquez, and many more. The Prado has become a prized destination for art lovers.

In the afternoon, we will join a local expert for a visit to the Reina Sofia Museum. The Reina Sofia opened its doors in 1990 and is considered Madrid’s Contemporary Art Center. After checking in at the hotel and settling into our rooms, we will have an orientation walk.

After breakfast, we will enjoy a panoramic bus tour through Bilbao’s historic center and visit sites such as the Plaza Moyua, Jardines de Albia and Teatro Arriaga, among others. Afterwards, we will spend some time at the Guggenheim Museum, one of the most admired works of contemporary architecture, designed by Canadian American architect Frank Gehry.

In the afternoon, we will have free time to explore the city, and our tour coordinator will be happy to offer suggestions in that respect.

Overnight: Barcelona

Breakfast at hotel. After check-out, we will be transferred by private bus to Barcelona. On our way, we will stop at a winery, where we will enjoy an expert-led visit and a wine tasting session. Then, we will have lunch at a restaurant in Logroño, capital of La Rioja region. After lunch, we will continue our journey to Barcelona.

Upon arrival, after checking in at the hotel and settling into our rooms, we will have an orientation walk.

After breakfast, a local expert will join us at the hotel for a presentation on Modernism as an Art and Architecture Movement. Then, we will depart from the hotel by private bus for a visit to two of Antoni Gaudí´s masterworks, the enormous basilica known as La Sagrada Familia (The Sacred Family) and the exotic Parque Güell, Gaudí’s outdoor residential project.

After breakfast we will set out with a local expert for a day trip to Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador Dalí. Upon arrival, we will visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum, the world’s largest surrealist art object. Then we will depart to Púbol to have lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch, we will continue to Gala Dalí Castle Museum-House, where we will enjoy an expert-led visit. Afterwards, we will return to Barcelona with approximate arrival in the late afternoon.

After breakfast, we will meet a local expert for a walk through the Gothic Quarter and visit treasures such as Plaza Felipe Neri, the Roman Columns, and Plaza del Pi.

Then, we will have the afternoon free to pack, explore or just relax. We will gather together again later at the hotel to have our farewell dinner.

Spanish architecture

Madrid has, among other atractions, great museums . Not only the collections are among the best in the world , but also the buildings that house them have great architectural interest. Besides being historic buildings, they have all been recently upgraded or expanded by famous contemporary architects .

The predominant change over the last two decades in Bilbao has been in the area of urban renewal . In few cases have those world-renowned architects come together who took part in the process, among them Gehry, Foster, Pelli, Legorreta, Isozaki, Calatrava, Sterling, and Soriano . So that today Bilbao is known abroad as one of the key reference points insofar as concerns art, modern architecture, and urban renewal.

The extensive history of Barcelona has made urban reforms a necessity in order to regain the use of buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. Many great architects have worked to restore and revitalize  the spanish architecture in the city, for its citizens and visitors, specially since the Summer Olympic Games in 1992.

The Royal Palace of Madrid: History and Architecture

The Royal Palace of Madrid: History and Architecture

  • August 4, 2023 10:00 am

A Fascinating Journey into History and Architecture of The Royal Palace of Madrid. As a seasoned traveler and tour organizer with Satguru Experiences, I have had the pleasure of exploring numerous historical landmarks across Madrid. Among them, the Royal Palace of Madrid stands out as an iconic symbol of the city’s rich history and grandeur. Join me as we embark on a captivating journey through the centuries and discover the fascinating secrets hidden within the walls of this majestic palace.

History and Architecture

The Royal Palace of Madrid, also known as the Palacio Real, is a remarkable testament to the city’s royal heritage. Its construction began in 1738, under the reign of King Philip V, and took over two decades to complete. The palace is a stunning blend of various architectural styles, primarily influenced by Baroque and Classical elements. As you wander through its opulent halls and breathtaking chambers, you’ll be enchanted by the intricate details, exquisite frescoes, and majestic chandeliers that adorn this architectural masterpiece.

Why is it so important?

Beyond its architectural brilliance, the Royal Palace of Madrid holds immense historical significance. While it is no longer the official residence of the Spanish royal family, the palace remains an essential symbol of Spain’s monarchy and national identity. It has witnessed countless historical events, from royal ceremonies and diplomatic receptions to political decisions that have shaped the country’s course. Today, it serves as a venue for state occasions and cultural events, welcoming visitors from around the world to witness its grandeur.

Where is it located?

Situated in the heart of Madrid, the Royal Palace commands a prominent position overlooking the city. Its strategic location atop a hill offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it an even more awe-inspiring sight. The palace’s proximity to other key landmarks, such as the Almudena Cathedral and Plaza de Oriente, makes it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Madrid’s historic center.

Who lives there?

Since 1965, the royals have chosen the more modest Zarzuela Palace on the outskirts of Madrid as their home. However, the Royal Palace still plays a vital role in official state functions and ceremonies, attracting dignitaries and visitors alike with its regal ambiance and captivating history.
