Mariposa Cruises for your Toronto Harbour Dinner

I love being on the water, so when Mariposa Cruises extended an invitation to experience a dinner cruise I was very excited.

So what is a Mariposa Dinner Cruise? Well, their website claims is a truly unique dining experience, where you’re able to experience the sights and sounds of the city’s waterfront and breathtaking skyline. Reading this I was excited to check it out.

I arrived with my dinner guest at the designated boarding site at 6:40pm, and after 15 minutes of waiting we boarded the boat and were assigned a table. We were promptly greeted by a friendly server who took our drink order, I was pleasantly surprised to see how reasonably priced the drinks were. Bottles of wine ranged from $28-$40, with mixed drinks and beers from $6-$10.

I was a bit apprehensive when I learned dinner consisted of a buffet. Not because I don’t like buffets, but because I hate chaos. The idea of being on a boat with a bunch of strangers, who I’m assuming are as hungry as I am, rushing to form a line at the buffet gave me a bunch of anxiety. So when the server explained to me that the we would be called up table by table I was very relieved.

After receiving our drinks, we decided to hit up the top deck to enjoy the sunshine and view. The view from the top deck is gorgeous, and the downtown Toronto skyline is beautiful.

My first and only disappointment of the night was the number of people smoking on the various decks of the boat. It’s 2015, time to ban the smoking, or at the very least regulate it to the back deck on the first floor. That being said, it was a lot of fun taking pictures and selfies with the Toronto skyline as the backdrop. All the guests on the boat were in a great mood helping each other take pictures.

After taking countless pictures it was time to eat. The buffet was delicious, it consisted of 4 different salads, pasta, fresh herb grilled chicken, a fish dish and a carving of roast beef. My favourite was the roast beef, it was flavourful and tender. For dessert there was an assortment of parties, amazing Dufflet cakes, teas and coffee.

As the sun set, the sun reflecting off the downtown skyline is a sight to see. The cruise runs about 3 hours, it’s a great way to see the city from a different perspective. My parents are coming to visit from Vancouver next month, and without a doubt I’ll be taking them back on the dinner cruise.

Marking the 30th anniversary of Mariposa Cruises' maiden voyage

Over the last 30 years, mariposa has grown to 6 vessels of various sizes and has hosted millions of guests.

It started as a vision to showcase Toronto's waterfront from an entirely new vantage point — the harbour. Mariposa Cruises began in 1987 under the name, Adventures Afloat.

One of its earliest vessels, is the Captain Matthew Flinders. The company purchased the 144-foot luxury ship in 1989.

It was built in Adelaide, Australia and took four months to sail to Toronto harbour. It's named after the famous navigator who was the first to circumnavigate Australia.

Witnessing the transformation of the waterfront

Cindi Vanden Heuvel has been with Mariposa for 21 years.

"I think what's most exciting is that the waterfront has become a real residential community and so we see a lot more condo buildings," says the company vice-president. "So as the harbour continues to transform and become more green land and developed I think we'll continue to see this wonderful, positive transformation."

Captain Duncan Rands is also a veteran on the water. He's been at the helm of Mariposa vessels for 16 seasons. And he's watched the city's waterfront transform before his eyes.

"When I first started, you could see the Royal York Hotel clear as day and now you can't, it's buried behind (the condo towers). I wouldn't be able to point it out to you anymore, it's just disappeared altogether. So the view has changed quite a bit."

Millions have boarded Mariposa vessels    

Over the last 30 years, Mariposa has grown to six vessels of various sizes. More than three million guests have been on board for harbour tours, company events, weddings and even some marriage proposals.

According to Vanden Heuvel most of the time, "she says yes."

"Toronto has so much diversity, culture, food, there's so much here and I think that's the attraction of Toronto. It's just a world class city welcoming everyone", she says.

"Toronto is hot. It's a wonderful destination and the fact that we're a waterfront city is an absolute pleasure to share this experience with people every year."

For Captain Rands, it's simple: an active waterfront attracts locals and tourists alike.

"If you come down to harbourfront on a weekend it's booming with people just coming down trying to beat the heat or just see the sights. So I think if you have access to the water and for the public, your city with thrive and it'll be something you can be proud of."

imagine this- gorgeous sunset over Mississauga, moonlight sparkling on the water,.eating delicious food with a wide variety, and friendly helpful people while travelling on the water. All this accompanied by nice music.That was my experience when I took the dinner cruise on "The Northern Spirit". That seems to be the best boat for a total experience(since they have several), because it has the most open concept and three decks including the top one which is entirely open for stargazing and seeing the sunset and dancing. If you are with a special someone it can be very romantic. For me it was just "heaven"

Myself and 2 girlfriends went on the cruise on Sept.13 on the Captain Mathew Flinders boat.The food and service was excellent.They served all you can eat chicken,roast beef and salmon.Make sure to but tickets in advance because they do sell out.The D.J./music was really good. You cruise to the Burlington/Hamilton bridge and back.We will definitely do it again,but this time with our spouses next spring. Definitely worth your time and money.

My husband and I had the pleasure of sailing on the Captain Mathew Flinders celebrating our 39th Wedding Anniversary. Food was delicious and plentiful. I loved the coffee there, very tasty. My husband ordered a bottle of red wine and some beer, which all had a great taste. The staff was very friendly and professional. The weather was sunny and, just perfect for being outside and overlooking our beautiful harbour and small islands that surround it. it brings back many memories as i was raised not far from Harborfront. Hoping to go back soon, this time with family and friends. There was a very friendly photographer on board that took a great pic of us that we bought. We hope to go back on this cruise, this time with friends and family. Thanks again for a great venue !!!!

Went on a Mariposa dinner cruise with a friend on the boat called Northern Spirit. The food and service on board were excellent, and the views of the Toronto skyline at night were amazing. A must-do for visitors to Toronto, even locals would be impressed with the unique view of the city you get from the harbour at night.

You should take a harbour cruise while in Toronto. Viewing the city from the sea is a MUST. Mariposa lines are friendly and nice. We took the boat ORIOLA and its a nice trip around the small islands outside Toronto downtown. For a european its very typical northern american thing that the narrated tour in fact was narrated from minut 1 till the very last minute. Never a quiet moment, which is a shame. But the crew was very VERY friendly and it was good value for your money. Only - please give the passengers some quiet moments to enjoy the views.

My husband and I and two other couples were looking for a fun venue, for an evening out. From the moment we boarded the boat the service was exceptional. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Our dinner of roast beef and salmon was delicious. Dessert was decadent - from the cheese cake to the chocolate fountain. The Toronto skyline was an array of colours. More breathtaking than we could have imagined. We danced and enjoyed the serene atmosphere while we cruised. A wonderful evening that we would highly recommend.

Students can enjoy a unique experience of Toronto aboard Mariposa Cruises’ 45-minute audio guided scenic harbour tours, with stunning views of Toronto’s skyline, harbour and islands.
