Marmara Island ( Marmara Adası ) is the largest of the Marmara Islands in the Southern Marmara Region of Turkey. It's roughly triangular, 15 km east-west and 10 km north-south. The population in 2021 was 10,148, with about 4000 apiece in Marmara town and in Saraylar, with the rest in the coastal villages between.

Understand [ edit ]

Tourism got started here in the 4th century AD, as the nobles of Byzantium found the island an agreeable place for summer villas and pleasure palaces. It was variously called "Proikonnesos" (island of the royal dowry) and "Prinkipo" (island of the aristocracy); but nothing remains of these sybarite resorts except perhaps the name of the village of Saraylar, "palaces", calqued from its Greek original Παλάτια Palatia .

The island is rugged, with the lowland south farming olives and wine grapes; fishing was also a traditional livelihood but the sea has become fished out. The north is forested mountains, rising to 709 meters at Ilyas Tepe. The big industry here has always been marble - marmara in Greek, hence the present name of the island and its surrounding sea. Emperor Diocletian sent heretics to the quarries as slave labour, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was clad in the island's marble, and today it goes to adorn bathrooms, hotel lobbies and corporate foyers the world over. Although Marmara town remains the main settlement, Saraylar near the quarries has grown into a second town and ferry port.

IDO ferries for foot passengers normally sail from Istanbul in summer, but they're not running in 2022.

Gestaş car ferry sails twice a day from Erdek . It takes 2-3 hours via Balikli on Paşalimani island and Avşa , also calling at Ekinlik two days a week. The boat is based on Avşa so there's an early morning sailing from there via Marmara to Erdek, and the evening ferry from Erdek heads on there after Marmara. In 2022 the single fare from Erdek is 25 TL, car 65 TL.

May-Aug a Gestaş waterbus for foot-passengers sails from Narlı, the beach resort 15 km northwest of Erdek. There are two sailings a day, so a day-trip is possible.

Marmara RoRo sails several times a day between Erdek and Tekirdağ Barbaros on the far mainland coast. Most bypass the islands, but one per day calls at Marmara town, and two call at Saraylar on the north coast.

40.5832 27.5625 1 Marmara ferry port is 500 m east of the main town.

40.6561 27.6589 2 Saraylar is the north coast ferry port.

Get around [ edit ]

Dolmuş es fan out from Marmara town to the other settlements, and connect with the ferries. They're more frequent in summer but run all year as school buses. They run to Çınarlı hourly and three times a day to Gündoğdu. Only one or two per day run out to Topağaç, Asmalı and Saraylar.

Little yellow taxis ply in Marmara (+90 530 799 6110), Çınarlı (+90 535 599 6440), Gündoğdu (+90 535 345 3784) and Saraylar (+90 532 717 8956).

There is no through road along the norh coast, so from Çınarlı to Saraylar you have to wind along the south coast then over the hills.

See [ edit ]

  • 40.6162 27.7062 1 Asmalı is a little harbour village that retains several traditional wooden Greek houses from before the 1923 population exchange. The residents might let you look in for a small donation. Many of their ancestors were deported from Greek Aegean islands as part of that exchange.
  • 40.64904 27.70279 2 Agios Nikolaos in a valley called Yana (from Greek γέννα génna , "birth" or by extension "fertile") on the road to Saraylar is a chapel on a Greek cross plan, probably from the 17th century. It was abandoned during the population exchange, and there are few, faint decorations remained in the interior. Bartholomew I of Constantinople, the Ecumenical Patriarch, held a service here in 2013, the first time since its abandonment about a century prior.
  • 40.6501 27.6901 3 Marble Factory ( Mermer Taş Fabrikası ) along the eastern rim of the Minikada cove east of Saraylar is the ruins of a marble processing plant started operations in 1912 — the oldest in Turkey — and abandoned in the 1970s. All of its machinery, now rusting away on site, continued running on steam power until its closure.
  • Marble Museum ( Saraylar Açık Hava Müzesi ) 500 m west of Saraylar ferry port was a marble quarry in Roman times, and is dotted with unfinished sculptures and funerary monuments that never got to grace a cemetery or forum. Indeed they usually weren't finished here, but shipped out as rough blocks then finely carved on site, a prize example being the Ludovisi Battle sarcophagus now in Rome. The quarry is free, 24 hours. Large quarries remain active in the hills south of town.
  • 40.6425 27.5521 4 Onur Madencilik and nearby Tuna Madencilik look like sinister campsites on satellite maps. No, all those white oblongs aren't tents, but marble slabs awaiting shipment. You may find the approach road closed to non-company traffic, in any case beware of huge oncoming trucks around the next blind corner.
  • 40.643 27.4845 5 Hayırsız ada is the islet seen to the west. The name means "No Good Island" and it's wiser to accept this than to investigate.

Do [ edit ]

  • Beaches are a series of small coves, mostly pebble. Beware currents.
  • Water sports: you should have gone to Avşa. Shacks and franchises on Marmara have withered since covid, and aren't around in 2022. Check the big beach hotels to see if anything's possible.

Buy [ edit ]

  • Marmara town has Migros by the ferry pier, open daily 08:30-22:00.
  • All the other settlements have small stores.

Eat [ edit ]

  • Saraylar port has Özmen Ekmek Fırını and Yıldırım Öz Karadeniz Odunlu Ekmek Fırını, the pansiyon strip has Abroz Baraka, Masal and Üç Öz Pide Lahmacun Kebab Salonu.

Drink [ edit ]

  • Most bars are within hotels or restaurants, there aren't free-standing pubs.
  • Wine is made on the island. There are no vineyards you can tour, but ask around for the local product.

Sea of Marmara, Turkey

Last Updated on April 1, 2024

The Marmara Sea is bordered to the north by the peninsula of  Thrace , to the south by the peninsula of  Anatolia  (Asia Minor), and to the west by the peninsula of Gallipoli . It was once rich in fish (and still yields some), and the lands surrounding it are rich agricultural areas that produce sunflowers, wine, table grapes, grains, and fruits in abundance. It gets its romantic name, “Marble Sea,” from ancient marble quarries on Marble Island  (Marmara Adası) .

The Sea of Marmara has always had strategic importance because it is the major waterway linking the  Black Sea , the Aegean , and the Mediterranean  via the  Bosphorus and the  Dardanelles . In fact, all three capitals of the Ottoman Empire — Bursa , Edirne , and Istanbul —have always been strategically placed near the Marble Sea.

Moreover, Odysseus (Ulysses) and his comrades, Jason and the Argonauts, British World War I submarines, and countless other adventurers have sailed across the Marmara on their quests.

Today, the Marmara is one of Turkey's many maritime highways.  Fast catamaran ferryboats  zoom cars and passengers across it, connecting  Istanbul ‘s  Yenikapı Feribot Terminalı  and  Kabataş docks  with the cities of  Yalova (for  İznik Bursa ), Bursa's docks at  Güzelyalı  and  Mudanya , and Bandırma  (for  Çanakkale ,  Balıkesir , and  İzmir . ( map )

Here's where to go and what to see in the region:

Istanbul has been the capital of some of the most important civilizations in the world, including the Eastern Roman Empire (also known as the Byzantine Empire , 330–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). Due to its strategic location connecting Europe and Asia, Istanbul has been a crucial location throughout history. The city is rich in culture and history, offering plenty of opportunities for exploration and adventure.

Istanbul , which was formerly known as Constantinople, is a city that is renowned for its iconic history and culture. Due to the many sights and attractions that the city has to offer, it would be quite challenging to list them all in this article. We suggest that you visit our Istanbul page for more information.

Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque : The Ayasofya-i Kebir Cami-i Şerifi was the biggest church of the Eastern Roman Empire in İstanbul prior to the Ottomans' conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The building now represents a blend of Islam and Christianity, featuring a mix of Christian and Muslim symbols, and also serves as a museum.

Topkapı Palace and Harem : Topkapı Palace was the first palace in Istanbul where real sultans lived, and Harem served as a section where the Sultan's wives resided and a sanctuary of education and refinement, where young women were taught courtly etiquette and manners. Today, it serves as a museum and library.

Basilica Cistern : Yerebatan Sarnıç is only one of the hundred different Byzantine cisterns lying beneath Istanbul. People used these cisterns to get fresh drinking water. You will not be disappointed to visit this amazing structure.

The first capital of the  Ottoman Empire , Bursa, is a historic city perched on the slopes of  Uludağ  (2543 meters, 8343 feet). It is known as the capital of mosques in Turkey. Today, Bursa is noted for its beautiful  early Ottoman mosques ,  roast lamb kebap , silk weaving, delicious fruits, camel-skin  shadow puppets , and automobile factories. Adjoining Bursa to the west is  Çekirge , noted for its  hot mineral-water baths  since  Roman  times.

Bursa has such a wide range of sites that we need to dedicate a separate page for the many sights in the city. Check our main Bursa page for more details.

Great Mosque (Ulu Camii) : The Grand Mosque of Bursa was built between 1396 and 1399 by architect Ali Neccar and commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I to commemorate his great victory at the Battle of Nicopolis. However, after the Sultan's defeat at the Battle of Ankara in 1402, the mosque was destroyed to the ground by Timur. Over the years, the mosque was repaired, and today, it stands as the second-largest mosque in Bursa.

Grand Bazaar (Kapalı Çarşı): Just next to the Grand Mosque, you can also visit the Grand Bazaar of Bursa. It is an ancient roofed bazaar where you can find different souvenirs to relish your trip to Bursa.

Bursa City Museum (Bursa Kent Müzesi): A moderate museum where you can see through the timeline of the city's long and rich history.

Irgandı Bridge (Irgandı Köprüsü): Irgandı Bridge is one of the oldest bridge markets in the world and Turkey's Ponte Vecchio of Florence. It is another perfect location to purchase souvenirs.

Tofaş Anatolian Car Museum: A good museum dedicated to the evolution of cars from horse-drawn cars to modern-day vehicles.

İnkaya Historical Plane Tree: İnkaya Tarihi Çınar ağacı is an over 600-year-old tree and Turkey's largest tree with a height of 37 meters and 13 main thick branches. People come here to sit at the cafe under the tree and enjoy a refreshing cup of Turkish tea or Turkish coffee.

Mudanya , this historic port town where, on October 11, 1922, an armistice was signed between Turkey and France, Italy, and Great Britain, Turkey's adversaries in World War I and the Turkish War of Independence , is now a  ferry port for Bursa .

Dereköy Kilisesi: Built as a Greek Orthodox Church in 1857, Dereköy Church's remains still stand proudly today.

Panagia Pontobasilissa Church: Built in the 13th century, Kemerli Klise is believed to hold some of the oldest and most important frescos in the region.

Yalova on the southeastern shore, serves as the port for ferries to and from  Istanbul , serving Bursa and  İznik (Nicaea). A few kilometers south of Yalova are the hot mineral water baths of Termal, famous since  Roman times.

Yalova Termal Kaplıcaları: Yalova Termal is a popular thermal resort, especially visited during winter. Enjoying the hot waters, hammams, and pools is truly delightful during the colder months.

Famed for the cannons in its fortress, which once kept enemy warships from passing through the  Dardanelles , Çanakkale is now famous for the  car ferries  that cross from the Gallipoli peninsula, making it a prime travel nexus. It's also the best base for visits to the  Gallipoli battlefields  and the ruins of ancient Troy .

Trojan Horse ( Truva Atı ): Everybody knows the Troy horse, partly because of the legend and the 2004 movie " Troy ," which starred Brad Pitt. After the shooting of the movie ended, the film crew gifted the giant horse to the Çanakkale, where you can still spot it today.

Canakkale Naval Museum: Çanakkale Deniz Müzesi is an open-air museum where you can see various historic sailing vessels, cannons, artifacts, and exhibits.

Çanakkale Ceramics Museum: Çanakkale Seramik Müzesi is a small museum located on a historic Turkish bath, offering beautiful ceramics for sale as souvenirs.

Gallipoli ( Gelibolu)

Always of strategic importance, Gallipoli is famous for the terrible World War I battles between Allied and  Ottoman  troops. Today, the battlefields in Gelibolu are a national park and a poignant memorial to the half-million casualties and fatalities of the campaign.

Gallipoli War Museum: A small museum where you can see the artifacts and possessions of the soldiers.

1915 Çanakkale Bridge: This new bridge is the world's longest suspension bridge

Piri Reis Museum: Piri Reis was a legendary sea captain and cartographer who produced detailed maps of the Mediterranean in the Ottoman area. He was born in Gelibolu.

Edirne is a historic city seldom visited by tourists, even though it's an easy day trip west of  Istanbul . Edirne has a good bazaar and many historic mosques, including the Selimiye, the masterwork of the  Ottoman s' finest architect, Mimar Sinan. It borders Greece and Bulgaria and was the capital of the Ottoman Empire for a while!

Selimiye Mosque: Selimiye Mosque is a masterpiece of Mimar Sinan, built between 1569 and 1575. It has a single large dome supported by eight pillars and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mosque boasts stunning calligraphy and geometrical designs in pink, claret red, and blue, which add to the architectural beauty of its marvel.

Üç Şerefeli Mosque: Üç Şerefeli Cami is a 15th-century mosque named after its three balconies, with great details and unique architecture. It is known for its minaret with a spiral design.

Old Mosque: Eski Ulu Cami was built in the 15th century. Small but impressive.

Macedonian Tower: A Roman watch tower built in Hadrianopolis under the reign of Emperor Hadrian. It is one of the few structures left from the Roman period in the city.

İznik (Nicaea)

Every Christian knows  Nicaea (İznik) because of the Nicene Creed and the two important ecumenical councils held here in the years 325 and 787, but you should come to see its impressive Roman walls, historic mosques, a good little museum, beautiful Byzantine tombs, and pretty lakeside setting.

Iznik Hagia Sophia: Iznik's Hagia Sophia is definitely a must-see when visiting Iznik. The site where the Church of Hagia Sophia stands today was built on a prior church in 4 B.C. In the year 325 A.D., it hosted the First Council of Nicaea. The church underwent reconstruction sometime in the mid-6th century after a commission from Emperor Justinian I. Later on, in 787, the Second Council of Nicaea was held there, officially ending the first period of Byzantine Iconoclasm. After the fall of Nicaea to the Ottoman Turks, it was transformed into a mosque.

Basilica of Saint Neophytos: The underwater Byzantine Basilica of Saint Neophytos was found in Lake Iznik in 2014. This basilica was built on the shore of the lake where Saint Neophytos was killed and then submerged after an earthquake in AD 740.

Iznik Castle: The exact history of this mysterious castle and its walls is not exactly known, as they are interwoven with stones left by many civilizations that lived near Nicaea. However, İznik İstanbul Gate and İznik Lefke Gate are among the most prominent structures left of this ancient fortress.

Bandırma is a railhead and ferry dock town midway along the south shore. While the city has a long and rich history, it was destroyed and rebuilt during World War I. It is also the last place where the Ottomans and Greeks fought before signing the peace treaty in Mudanya. While the city is important to the people who live there, you'll probably just be passing through on the  car/passenger ferry.

Bird Paradise National Park: If you ever wind up near the city during March-July or Sept-Oct, you can visit the Bird Paradise National Park (Kuşcenneti National Park, or Kuş Cenneti Milli Parkı), where you can see migratory birds.

Thrace and Dardanelles

The eastern part of the Thracian peninsula is the European portion of Turkey, holding historic  Edirne (Adrianople), the  Gallipoli  peninsula, the  Dardanelles (Hellespont) Strait, and lots of sunflower fields.

The Location

The importance, food & culture.

The Sea of Marmara is located in the Northwest region of Turkey, between the European and Asian borders, and connects to the Black Sea.

Bordering the Sea of Marmara are the cities of Istanbul, Bursa, Canakkale, Gelibolu, and Edirne (a little more inland), to name a few.

Bordering Greece and Bulgaria, the Marmara Region is full of history and culture, and a simple stop during a Euro/Turkey Trip.

Marmara is full of some of Turkey’s most popular cities – including Istanbul.

Although Istanbul is at the top of our must-see list, you definitely shouldn’t overlook the other beautiful locations in this region.

Here are some of the best places to travel to in the Marmara Region of Turkey.

1. Istanbul

Istanbul is Turkey’s vibrant capital city, filled with world-class restaurants, music, breathtaking architecture, and a diverse population – which also means diverse food for all diets and appetites!

The Sultanahmet district is where you want to be as it is in the heart of the city and close to everything you’d want to explore.

The city is full of beautiful architecture and daytime attractions like Ayia Sofia, the Blue Mosque, and The Archaeology Museum.

As far as food goes, you want to try traditional Raki, Turkey’s national drink. Known as Lions Milk, it is said to open the heart and calm the mind and body – sounds like just what you need, right?

As far as getting there, Istanbul is home to Turkeys International Airport, which will likely make this city your first stop on your Turkey holiday.

If you’re looking for history, Bursa is the perfect city for you.

Bursa served as the first capital of the Ottoman Empire from 1326 to 1365 and is home to the Green Tomb – a mausoleum of Mehmet I, the Ottoman Sultan.

The medieval architecture, silk market, clock tower, cable cars, and the Great Mosque are must-see locations.

The city is full of universities giving it a youthful atmosphere and some delicious local cuisine like the Iskender kebap, which was invented in Bursa.

3. Canakkale

Many travelers make their way to this port side city to see the ancient ruins of Troy.

Located in Hisarlik, the ancient ruins are one of the most spectacular sights in the region.

Some of the things to do in Canakkale include enjoying fresh seaside restaurants, visiting archeological museums, and the Cimenlik Castle.

Be sure to visit the boardwalk for an up-close and personal look at the Trojan Horse used in the film Troy – donated to the city after the film wrapped.

4. Tekirdag

Tekirdag is located on the coast of the Sea of Marmara and is a prime destination for vineyard tours and beach layouts.

Known for its wine festivals, Tekridag is a significant winemaking center in Turkey and hosts a wine festival in Sarkoy every year.

Be sure to visit the Rustem Pasha Mosque and the Valuable Goods Bazaar during your visit, as well as the beautiful beaches and wineries.

Being the bridge between Asia & Europe, it has always been a strategical point since early centuries up to the present day.

For the same reason, as the role of Marmara is more of a junction, it hosts an integral part of the country’s industry, both with its highway to Europe and seaports of the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea.

It is a perfect blend of east and west considering its rich history, especially in Istanbul, where you can find almost anything you are looking for due to its grand population.

Bursa is an excellent spot for Islamic art and the old malls, especially for textiles (we all know the famous Turkish towels) and silk trade. If you are interested in skiing, Uludag is an excellent alternative to Kartalkaya preferred by many Istanbulites.

The cuisine is enriched with lots of vegetables and fresh herbs, as the area is well irrigated with the rainfall. Both coming from the Black Sea and being close enough to the Aegean Sea, the fresh fish is another source and good olive from Bursa all the down and along the entire coast till Antakya.

The majority of sunflowers are also grown in the Marmara Region, where it is also rich with some other crops such as corn, rice, sugar beads, and vineyards from Thrace to coast.

Settlements, Villages and Where To Stay

Marmara Island has five villages and a small central town called Marmara. All the villages are doted around the coastal line and each has a distinctive character;

Marmara; the central town

Marmara (Prokonnesos), which was established on the south-west coast of the island, remained under the rule of Phoenicians, Milesians, Byzantines and Ottomans throughout history. Today, the settlement is built on a coastline of 3 km’s. The center is founded on a grid street plan but unfortunately had failed to preserve most of the traditional houses. In addition, the drying up of centuries-old plane trees on the coastline as a result of improper fertilization negatively reflects on the tourism of the island. However, many people who are in love with the island continue to spend the summer months in Marmara.

marmara adasının merkezinde eski tarihi evler

Most of the local people living in Marmara center are the Turkish people migrated from Crete, as a result of “population exchange” between Turkey and Greece im 1923. Local people make their living from fishing, tourism and olive cultivation. Life is quiet and easy in Marmara and nothing is complicated. There is not much to do apart from swimming, sunbathing, playing backgammon, sipping your sage tea or raki and chat with friends…But if you look for somethings different, you may also go for an island tour, fishing, hiking, biking and listening live music in some bars.

Accomodation in “Marmara”, the center

Most of the good hotels are located in and around the center. There are 3 or four hotels in the center and all of them has sea view rooms. Marmara is not a noisy place, even in the center, therefore you may feel in silence even in the center. Alternatively there are many nice beach hotels as well.

Beaches in “Marmara”, the center

There are two beaches in walking distance, in Marmara, center;

Aba Beach; the long and wide Aba Beach is maybe the most popular (and never too much crowded) beach in the island. If you like to lie on the pebbles but walk on the sand in the water this is the perfect option for you. There are enough beach clubs, cafes and restaurants along the beach and you may choose your ideal place.

aba beach in marmara island, closest beach and cleanest water close to istanbul

Aba Beach is located on the east side of the town and in a 10-15 minutes walking away from the center. During the peak season you may take on the dolmuş boats as well.

Kole Beach;  this beach is much smaller than Aba Beach but it has a sandy character and is just 3-5 minutes walking distance from the center. There are a few cafes and bars in Kole Beach.

What to eat in “Marmara” the center?

Ice cream (especially the mulberry / karadut), un helvasi (helvah made of flour), sage tea (adachayi), koruk (a refreshing drink made of unripe grapes), midye dolma (stuffed mussle), peynirli patlican (fried eggplant with cheese), tuzlu balık (salted sardines) and so on.

Gündoğdu Village

Gündoğdu is a cute, picturesque and midsize village. It’s 4 kms away from the center and if you like hiking you can get there within 45 minutes (you will face many slopes but also enjoy beautiful landscapes).

marmara adası'nda gezilecek yerler, gündoğdu mahallesi

Gündoğdu is one of the greenest villages of the island and surrounded with olive trees and secluded beautiful bays . The permenant population is around 250 while during the peak season and holidays this number reach to 1000. Most of the visitors are the local people who had been moved to big cities. The village is beautiful and generally the people are open minded and friendly. The main activities in the village are socializing at the sea-side cafes, play backgammon while sipping sage tea or koruk and fishing. In the village there is a playground for children, soccer, basketball and beach volley fields, three small groceries, some places for having breakfast and light food, a bakery and a simple but a lovely bar on the beach (the bar is open during the summer season only). There are also two small half sandy beaches on the two sides of the village. If you ask what is the local speciality to eat in Gündoğdu, it is “kasik helvasi” (a traditional sweet halvah which is difficult to find elsewhere) and “bazlamaç, a kind of yummy pita – potatoes bread coocked with olive oil on fire.

Çınarlı Village

Çınarlı is on the west part of the island and 7 kms away from the center. It is the most touristic settlement of the island after “Marmara, the center”. Originally the local people of this village are from the eastearn Black Sea region of Turkey. Çınarlı is famous with its 1000 years old plane trees and the name comes from these trees.

marmara adası gezi rehberi

In Çınarlı you can find a few nice and budget hotels and guest houses with sea view rooms at the beach. In Çınarlı you may have your lunch at your hotel or try a few place serving fish and some light food. If you are interested in the cultural heritage and the history of the island you may visit the small private museum of the village (there is no entrance fee).

Manastır Beach

Although the Manastır is not a village, it has started to become a new settlement due to the houses built in recent years. This is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches of the island, it is completely sandy and has turquoise waters. This bay is located between Çınarlı and Marmara and has a distance of 3-4 km from both sides. You reach to Manastır by taxi or by minibuses running between Çınarlı and Marmara. There is a nice beach-bar and a cafe-restaurant on the beach.

Topağaç Village

Topağaç is located on the south side of the island and 12 kms away from the center. Although there is nothing interesting in Topagaç, the nature surrounding the village is beautiful. Topağaç is an agricultural village and founded on the largest and most fertile flat lands of the island. Fruits, vegetables and butter coming from Topağaç are delicious and always is the first choice of the islanders.

{%ALT_TEXT%}

The name of the village comes from the ball shaped pine trees that you can see around the village. There is a long sandy beach in Topağac but most of the times it’s windy and there is no any facility on the beach as well. There is no any restaurant or accomodation option in Topağaç.

Saraylar is the second biggest settlement of the island and located on the northeast. Its distance from the center is 25 kms and you will need 30-40 minutes of driving to get. Saraylar is also the oldest settlement of the island since the oldest marble quarries of the world is located here and still being mining.

{%ALT_TEXT%}

If you are interested in marble mining and its history we recommend you to visit the area with the help of a guide. Saraylar marbel quarries are still the largest in the world and covers 11 percent of the island’s surface area. Here you can find one of the earliest marble factories of the world (and only two samples left in the world) but the complex needs restoration. In Saraylar there is also a small open air museums where you can see some of the marble works dating to Roman period. A marble sculpture symposium is held every year in Saraylar with artists from different countries. You can see interesting sculptures created by these artists along the beach.

{%ALT_TEXT%}

The village has a cosmopolitan population and mostly consisting of the people and their families working in the quarries. Although there are two beaches and a few small hotels Saraylar is generally not preferred for sea and sun tourism.

Asmalı Village

Asmalı is the smallest and the least visited village in the island. It’s 18 km’s away from the center and 6 km’s east of Topagaç Village. Unfortunately the village has no any attraction and facilities apart from the beautiful green landscapes around.

fast ferry transportation from Istanbul Marmara Island

Whats more to do on the island?

Climbing to ilyas mountain.

Marmara Island is the most mountainous and highest island in Turkey. Ilyas Mountain and the NATO peak (710 meters) is also the highest point in Marmara Sea. If you would like to climb to the peak the expedition may take at least 3-5 hours depending on your performance. At the top you will see a deserted and desolated NATO base left from 50’s. Here you will also see stunning views of the Marmara Sea and the other islands around.

Photographing wild horses

Marmara Island is one of the few places in Turkey where the wild horses live and roam freely. The total number of the feral horses are around 400 and they have been living in three different location as a 5 or 6 different groups. If you are interested you may follow and photograph the horses

Island tour and fishing

In the recent years unfortunately there is no any organized boat tour in the island. But we are expecting a boat tour organisation during 2021 summer season, to discover the villages and the other islands around Marmara. But if you like you may also rent a boat privately for a tour and fishing. Marmara Island is the region with the richest fish beds in the Marmara Sea. Some of the fish types you can hunt are as follows;; bream, bonito, bluefish, mackerel, mendole, sardines, anchovies, silverfish, garfish, scorpionfish and more kinds.

Hiking and Trekking

The island of Marmara is a great place for hiking, although there are no special hiking trails. The island municipality has some projects to create a trekking route.

Mountain Biking

90 percent of the area of Marmara Island consists of mountainous and hilly areas. For mountain bike lovers, there are excellent routes between villages and olive groves. For this reason, a two-day, 53-kilometers cycling tour is organized with the participation of hundreds of cyclists every summer.

How To Move Around The Island

There are scheduled minibuses operating between the villages and the center. While there are 4 to 10 shuttles between Merkez and Çınarlı depending on the season, there are fewer departures than other villages (usually two or three times a day). Unfortunately, there is no public transport to go from one village to another. You have to use a private car or taxi for this. There is no possibility to rent a car or motorbike on the island.

Transportation; How To Go To Marmara Island

There are 4 options for transportation. The best and fast way is using the fast ferries (deniz otobüsü in Turkish) departing from Istanbul.

1- IDO fast ferry from Istanbul

Taking a fast ferry is the most practical, fast and comfortable option to go to Marmara Island. Fast ferries run between spring and autumn, usually departures start on April 23 and end on October 29. During April, May and October you will find ferry departures only for the weekends. This is also a good opportunity to leave Istanbul on Friday evening, to stay in the island for two nights. And during the high season (in July, August) you may find up to 10, 12 ferry departures daily.

You can check the timetable /prices and buy your ticket here; IDO.

marmara adasına nasıl gidilir?

There are three ports of call that you can take on the fast ferries (deniz otobüsü) for Marmara Island;

  • IDO Yenikapi Port; this port is near to the old town and the journey takes 2 hours 45 minutes from Yenikapi.
  • IDO Bostanci Port; this port is on the Asian Side and the journey takes around 3 hours from Bostanci.
  • IDO Avcilar Port; this port is in the west side of European side and around 35 kms away from the old town or Taksim area. The journey takes around 2 hours from Avcilar.
  • Not all the fast ferries stop in each port of call.
  • Fast ferries do not carry any motor vehicle

2-  Ferries From Tekirdağ Ceyport or Barbaros Port

This option is more complicated and tiring and takes more time. You may think about this option if you would like to come to the island during winter or if you have a or motorbike. The ferries have departures everyday all year round. But you may find ferry only for Saraylar Village which is 25 kms away to the center, during some winter days. There are five or six ferries which are privately owned and the departure hours may change without prior notice, therefore be sure with the departure hours and port exactly. It is also recommended you to arrive the port earlier if its a summer weekend or holiday, since the capacity of the ferries are limited. If you do not have any private vehicle you may take on a scheduled bus leaving for Tekirdağ or Barbaros from Istanbul Esenler Otogari ; Istanbul Seyahat.

{%ALT_TEXT%}

Duration of journeys;

  • From Istanbul to Tekirdağ; 1,5 to 2,5 hours depending on the traffic, the location that you depart in Istanbul and the kind of vehicle.
  • From Istanbul to Tekirdağ; 2 to 3 hours depending on the traffic, the location that you depart in Istanbul and the kind of vehicle.
  • From Tekirdağ Ceyport to Marmara; 2,5 hours
  • From Barbaros Port to Marmara; 2 hours

3- GESTAS Ferries From Erdek

If you are planning to arrive to Marmara Island through the south of Marmara Sea, GESTAŞ  car ferries are the best option. In Erdek port you can find at least one departure everyday. The journey takes around 2 to 2,5 hours and the ferry stops in other islands like Pasalimani, Avşa and Ekinlik as well. It is recommended to arrive Erdek Port earlier to have a space on the boat, during weekends in the summer and in holidays.
