Better live than on their records and I mean that as a compliment because their records are fantastic. I'm not sure there are many bands I've seen who outperform my expectations live. Truly a wonderful show. I'll definitely be seeing them next time they're in town.
My Morning Jacket brought the energy. They didn't start their portion until almost 10:00, and played nonstop (save for the five minutes before the encore) until after midnight. I mean literally no stopping to talk to the audience of anything. One song after the other. I loved their set list. They played many songs off all their albums. They even did a two-song tribute to Prince, who passed away last week, by playing Raspberry Berret and Purple Rain. My only complaint, and granted I'm old, but the volume was so loud I could barely hear Jim singing most of the time, let alone hear the lyrics. That would be the one thing I would change. MMJ is so good musically, I just wish I could hear it more, but then again, it's a rock and roll concert so I guess that's too be expected. I'd recommend checking them out. Just make sure your babysitter knows you'll be out late.

Nathaniel Rateliff, My Morning Jacket to co-headline 2024 tour
W ith its swirl of soul, Americana and indie rock, Denver’s platinum-selling Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats has conquered international stages all on its own, following years of Rateliff’s dues-paying folkie career.
But the hard-working band is getting some help this year from My Morning Jacket — the similarly incendiary live act that mashes hard-driving guitars, wailing vocals and county twang into cosmically beautiful tunes. Both acts have sold out multi-night Red Rocks Amphitheatre stands on their own, but together, they promise a mighty draw.
The bands will co-headline a Sept. 10-28 road jaunt, called the Eye to Eye Tour, that finds them performing equal-length sets and switching the order for each concert, according to a press statement. .
“We are long-time lovers of My Morning Jacket and have grown a close friendship over the years,” Rateliff said in the statement. “It’s so special to become friends with musicians and peers that you admire, and we’re looking forward to bringing our love for each other on the road.”
“We were lucky enough to see Nathaniel and some of the Night Sweats at Preservation Hall in New Orleans some years ago — our minds were blown, our hearts were opened, and we got swept up in the joy of it all,” said Jim James, singer for My Morning Jacket, in the statement. “We are so happy to share the stage with these fine folks for a run full of peace, love, music, and fun!”
The un-fun part? There are currently no Colorado dates scheduled — or any west of the Mississippi River. Most are on the East Coast, with a couple in My Morning Jacket’s friendly territory of Nashville (the band hails from Louisville, Ken.).
Rateliff is currently planning shows at Denver’s Boettcher Concert Hall April 5-6 with the Colorado Symphony , a reprise of last year’s Imagination Artist series, but with a new program of orchestra-backed Leonard Cohen covers. Rateliff and the Night Sweats will follow that with a handful of North American dates, followed by the Night Sweats’ string of European dates and U.S. concerts, before joining with MMJ.
Tickets are on sale starting at 10 a.m. Friday, March 29, with a presale starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 26. Check out nathanielrateliff.com/tour for more, and see the Night Sweats’ current list of 2024 live dates below.

Welcome to another edition of the Essential Arts newsletter. As the warm weather turns up the heat on L.A., we take it as a sign to do the same by firing up a new week in review of art and culture around town, sparking curiosity of what’s out there to experience this weekend and maybe roasting a museum and a bad play or two for your cackling enjoyment. Let’s dive into what we wrote about on the arts beat this week...
You’re reading Essential Arts
Our critics and reporters guide you through events and happenings of L.A.
You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.
1. “John Valadez: Chaos Anime” A leading figure in the Chicano Arts Movement launched in the 1970s, Valadez is among the finest socially engaged figurative painters working in Los Angeles. His debut with the Luis de Jesus gallery opens Saturday and will include a mural-scaled painting, “Chaos,” that press materials say seeks to unravel common cliches around the “haves and have-nots.” Through June 8. 2. “Projecting L.A. 2024” The power of photojournalism will be on display in a most unusual way Saturday: projected at a scale of 80 feet wide and three stories tall. 4. Big Mouth at the Greek Nick Kroll and the Emmy Award-winning cast of “Big Mouth” bring their hilarious voices and cartoon visuals of the popular animated Netflix show to the Greek as part of this year’s Netflix Is a Joke Fest. Merging the world of TV, comedy and middle school hormones, this is sure to be an awkwardly amazing night of laughter. Thursday, 8 p.m., Greek Theater, netflixisajokefest.com — Nate Jackson
5. Beach Life Festival The return of this weekend seaside bash in Redondo Beach features rock stars for various waves of sound including rock, indie, soul, Americana and adult contemporary. Headlined by Sting, Incubus and My Morning Jacket, the fest masters the balance of raucous moments and chill vibes from classic acts like Seal, Devo and ZZ Top alongside a list of eclectic acts like Dirty Heads, Local Natives and Courtney Barnett that will surely turn up to show fans different slices of adventurous sound for this outdoor fest against a backdrop of surf and sun. 1.p.m.-10:30 p.m. Friday, 239 N. The biggest L.A. culture news
Theater Critic Charles McNulty reviews “Illinoise,” a hallucinatory dance musical based on Sufjan Stevens’ 2005 concept album “Illinois,” which offers a fitting end to a Broadway season that seemed happiest when operating beyond conventional assumptions and practices.
Staff writer Ashley Lee takes a look into “Galilee, 34,” a controversial new play about Jesus running through May 12 at Costa Mesa’s South Coast Repertory . The play takes place months after the crucifixion, when Jesus’ family and followers are trying to figure out how to proceed after the death of their leader.
Art Critic Christopher Knight launches some heat-seeking missles at LACMA’s plans to unveil a new (ill-advised) satellite museum in Las Vegas.
Staff writer Jireh Deng covered Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Mamet slamming Hollywood’s “garbage” DEI initiatives at the LA Times Festival of Books.
Assuming he missed Knight’s less-than-glowing thoughts on LACMA’s new Vegas location, museum director Michael Govan sat down with staff writer Jessica Gelt to talk about LACMA’s goals to develop a “strategic plan of regional partnerships” with museums — large and small — in order to pull more of its collection out of storage, and make it accessible to as many people as possible.
Charles McNulty files his roasty review of Broadway’s latest woefully underwhelming version of “ Cabaret” that can’t be saved, even by its awkwardly dressed star Eddie Redmayne.
More culture news, briefly ...
The recipients of the 2024 Doris Duke Artist Awards have been announced, and the winners are: Nataki Garrett (theater), Shamel Pitts (dance), Acosia Red Elk (dance), Esperanza Spalding (jazz), Chay Yew (theater), and Miguel Zenón (jazz). Now in its 11th year, the awards come with an unrestricted cash prize of $525,000 per artist, and up to $25,000 in retirement funds.
The Getty has returned an ancient bronze head to Türkiye (formerly Turkey). The head of a young man was acquired by the museum in 1971 and dates to c. 100 BCE–100 CE. While the body of the figure has not been identified, the head has been traced to the archaeological site of Bubon, in the Burdur province of southwestern Turkey — an area known for illegal excavations in the 1960s.
The Segerstrom Center for the Arts has announced its 2024-25 Family Series filled with programming suited for people big and small. The lineup includes the world-premiere of the Musicians of Bremen Live , as well as puppet play titled “Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch,” based on the book by Eileen Spinelli.
Geffen Playhouse’s new artistic director, playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, has been elected as a new member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. The academy recognizes and honors the artistic excellence of its members, and also serves as a research center where accomplished individuals across disciplines can come together in search of answers to complex problems facing various communities and society at large.
The Getty’s PST ART is coming back this September with a theme of “art & science collide.” Facets of the programming began rolling out this week as the Getty inaugurated its PST Climate Impact Program aimed at bringing together PST’s 60-plus participating institutions around issues of climate action and sustainable exhibition practices.

2024 RBC Heritage leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler nears fourth win in five starts with event to finish Monday
Weather prevented the final round from completing, but scheffler is well on his way to continuing his hot streak.
Scottie Scheffler's fourth victory in his last five tournaments will have to wait one more day. With the 2024 RBC Heritage experiencing more than a 2.5-hour weather delay Sunday, tournament action was unable to be completed before nightfall; it will instead leak into the work week. The final round at Harbour Town Golf Links will resume Monday at 8 a.m. ET with Scheffler holding a five-stroke lead at 20 under.
The world No. 1 is well clear of his nearest pursuer, Wyndham Clark, with three holes left in his tournament. Clark, meanwhile, is in the clubhouse at 15 under hoping for another runner-up check behind Scheffler. Others on the golf course like J.T. Poston, Patrick Cantlay and Sahith Theegala stand at that same number with holes to play.
Monday morning may only be a formality as Scheffler looks to be in control of just about everything -- like he has been the last two months.
Scheffler began Sunday in Hilton Head Island with one arm already slipped in the tartan jacket. Possessing a one-stroke lead, the Texan was crowned by many late Saturday evening despite the bevy of stars who had plans to upend him.
After knocking in a 6-foot par save on the 1st, Scheffler more or less turned those predictions into a reality. Chipping in for eagle on the par-5 2nd from long of the green (his 11th hole-out from off the green this season), Scheffler opened a three-stroke lead on the field and never looked back.
Charges were made by many, including a familiar foe in Clark, but none were that threatening. The reigning U.S. Open champion turned in 7-under 29 and tacked on another birdie on the 11th to get within one of Scheffler, but the pressure of perfection proved too much.
Hitting a tree with his second shot on No. 12, Clark's ball ricocheted out of bounds and led to a double bogey. Another dropped shot came on the following hole and all but secured another near miss from the U.S. Open champion.
Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg, Cantlay and Theegala all hovered on the first page of the leaderboard but never truly threatened. Instead, it was Patrick Rodgers who emerged as Scheffler's greatest threat thanks to an eagle-2 at the turn. A bogey a few holes later put an end to his Cinderella story.
Remaining in the wake of mistakes was a spotless Scheffler at 19 under, four ahead of the field. Turning in 3 under, the steadiest man in the game marched forward with a heavy diet of fairways and greens before a spell of thunderstorms halted his momentum on the par-4 12th.
Inclement weather was all that could stop Scheffler as the 27-year-old returned to the golf course more than two hours later and resumed his round without a hitch. While temperatures cooled and winds freshened, Scheffler was unaffected.
He picked off a birdie on the 13th to push his lead to five before a mud ball on the 15th led to his second finding the water on the par 5. It didn't matter as Scheffler launched a pitching wedge onto the surface, spinning it left and utilizing the slope to access the tucked pin. He avoided what would have been his first dropped shot since the 3rd hole on Thursday with an emphatic par save, and he will sleep easy Sunday night knowing five strokes separate him from the field and three holes separate him from victory.
Rick Gehman, Kyle Porter, Patrick McDonald and Greg DuCharme discuss Scottie Scheffler's hold on the RBC Heritage, Nelly Korda's fifth straight victory and Miles Russell finishing top 25 as a 15 year old. Follow & listen to The First Cut on Apple Podcasts and Spotify .
Play called for evening
The final group is on the green on the par-5 15th meaning they will have three holes to play on Monday. Scottie Scheffler faces a par putt from 10 feet to maintain his five-stroke lead as he stands at 20 under.
Five clear with five to go!
The only thing that can stop him is the sunlight at this rate. Scottie Scheffler adds a birdie on 13 to get to 20 under and five clear of the crew at 15 under. Without the world No. 1 this tournament would be very, very good, but alas they are all fighting for first flight honors it appears.
Conditions are considerably harder for these guys. The wind has switched, it's about 10 degrees cooler and they are racing against the clock. Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka make par on No. 12 and head to the par-4 13th. Wyndham Clark posts the clubhouse lead at 15 under, four behind Scheffler.
Let's play ball!
Players are on the golf course and play is set to resume. Scottie Scheffler in the final pairing has about 7.5 holes remaining and one hour until sunset meaning this thing is probably going to leak into Monday unfortunately.
Play to resume at 7 p.m.
Coverage information, play to resume at 6 p.m. et.
The expectation is this thing will be finished today as the range is open and play is set to resume in 40 minutes at 6 p.m. ET. This will leave Scottie Scheffler a couple hours to complete just about seven holes as he left off in the middle of the 12th fairway with a four-stroke lead at 19 under.
Play suspended due to weather
The horn has sounded at 4:28 p.m. ET as a large weather system (with lightning) has engulfed Harbour Town. This comes as Scottie Scheffler stands in the 12th fairway with a four-stroke lead at 19 under over a number of pursuers up ahead of him on the golf course. Players are being brought back into the clubhouse as rules officials make an assessment on when play will return.
Rain comin' down hard
Scheffler turns in 33 with three-stroke lead.
Scheffler lets a chance slide by on the short ninth and will instead settle for a 3-under 33 on his front nine. It was highlighted by his eagle-3 on the par-5 2nd and Scheffler will head to the back side with a three-stroke edge.
Theegala thriving
Theegala cards four 3s in a row to end his front nine and get within four of Scottie Scheffler. Sahith spoke yesterday about how cool it is what Scheffler is currently doing and how it is a motivating factor for someone like him to get better. It's a great perspective and Theegala continues to get better and better, but it may not be enough this week as he is four behind with nine to go.
