ATLANTA — Sonic the Hedgehog, Storm, a blue-haired Green Lantern and several Knights of Wakanda posed on the steps of the Hilton Hotel in Atlanta for a photo on Sunday afternoon of Labor Day weekend. They had come together for Dragon Con, a distinctly Southern take on the modern multigenre convention where the rules include always saying “please” and “thank you” and the beverage of choice is sweet tea.

In this world, conventions, or cons, are large-scale events where fans of a particular interest gather to hear panel discussions, meet others with similar passions and often dress up as characters. When they first began in the 1980s, they traditionally focused on a single topic, like science fiction books or comics, and didn’t leave room for overlap between fandoms. The audiences at these cons were also similarly homogeneous.

“A lot of the panels, early on, at a lot of sci-fi conventions, were, let’s be honest, four or five white men up there talking about things,” said Channing Sherman, who has been attending Dragon Con for over a decade.

Dragon Con was founded in Atlanta in 1987 on the then-radical idea of combining a science fiction convention with a gaming convention for people who enjoyed both. It attracted 1,200 fans the first year. The idea caught on, with the convention expanding to include dozens of topics like video games, anime and comics. Over the decades, attendance grew: On Labor Day weekend, Dragon Con drew an estimated 65,000 people to downtown Atlanta. As it has grown, the con has begun to more closely reflect the diversity of the city it calls home.

Cree Michelle Pringle, 30, an Atlanta native, has been attending Dragon Con since she was in high school. “There was always this disconnect between me and my Black friends when it came to being a nerd,” she said. “That wasn’t cool. You weren’t supposed to like comic books and anime. I needed to find people of my skin color who liked what I liked. When I started going to cons, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, these are my people.’”

In addition to hundreds of panels, Dragon Con’s signature event is a parade on Saturday morning that runs down Peachtree Street, Atlanta’s main thoroughfare. Dragon Con has a reputation for its displays of cosplay, with many attendees painstakingly crafting homemade costumes and accessories to dress up as specific characters.

For many, the annual gathering is a chance to catch up with fellow cosplayers, take photos together in costume, show off their craftsmanship and swap ideas. “In San Diego, it’s like we’re here for the merchandise and the exclusives, the media of it. It’s very glossy, glamorous celebrity style nerd-dom,” Ms. Pringle said about Comic-Con, the hugely popular international convention in California. “Dragon Con doesn’t really have new releases or anything like that. They just have good, fun camaraderie and amazing cosplay, which is very southern grown. It’s more of a party.”

Mr. Sherman, who traveled from Lake Charles, La., for Dragon Con, has attended nearly every year since 2008. That first year, Mr. Sherman, a former journalist, took photos of cosplayers he was impressed by. “One of my friends half jokingly asked, ‘Were you the only Black guy there?’” he said. He looked through his pictures and counted about 20 or 30 Black cosplayers. He posted an album on Facebook with all of them and named it: “Proof that I’m not the only one: Black geeks at Dragon Con.”

The Facebook photo album became an annual tradition and eventually morphed into an annual meet-up.

Meet-ups happen at Dragon Con for all types of groups, from Deadpool cosplayers to Trekkies. “If you can imagine it, there’s a photo shoot for it,” Mr. Sherman said. But at the time, there wasn’t one for the Black community, so the Black Geeks of Dragon Con meet-up was born.

The first meet-up in 2015 brought in a little more than 20 people. In the years that followed, Mr. Sherman and his friend and meet-up co-founder David Somuah handed out cards at the con inviting Black cosplayers to join, and word spread.

“We went from 20 to 80, then all of a sudden it just jumped to 200 or 300,” Mr. Sherman said. “In 2019, going through the pictures, we were close to 350 people. You couldn’t see the back of the stairs.”

In recent years, Dragon Con has made an effort to broaden its scope. A diversity track has been added to the programming that features panels on cosplay and disability, dealing with hate as a cosplayer, and representation in fantasy media.

“As a kid, I didn’t see as much variety or diversity of Black women,” Ms. Pringle said. “I want to make sure that everyone knows the Black characters we have to represent us. Even though there is a big gap, we still do have representation to be proud of.”

At the Black Geeks meet-up, playful character mash-ups are encouraged, with past highlights including Django Fett (“Django Unchained” meets Boba Fett from “Star Wars”), and Diana Prince Rogers Nelson (Wonder Woman if she were a Prince fan).

“They kind of think of this as their Blerd family reunion,” said Mr. Sherman, using a term combining the words Black and nerd. “It’s people that they may only see this one week out of the year. For a lot of people, this is their one big event, and they get to see people that are normally online friends.”

Here are some of the looks we saw at this year’s Black Geeks of Dragon Con meet-up:

“Beyond just being a place to cosplay, Dragon Con has been a place to reconnect with friends and the fandom community. It’s not just a con here, it’s a culture.”

— Akua Harris, left, cosplaying as Velma from Scooby-Doo

“Since childhood I’ve loved these characters. In addition to that I studied fashion design for almost a decade. Cosplaying allows me the freedom to really put my skills to work in a fun way that isn’t for work. ”

— Arkeida Wilson, cosplaying as Daphne from Scooby-Doo

“My folks taught me how to read with comics, so I’ve literally been into this nerd life since I could read. Dragon Con is my home con now. It’s the time folks like us can let our alter egos out. It’s all love.”

— Bradley Goodloe cosplaying as Woody from “Toy Story”

“Every time I come, I get to fully embrace my geekiness. Everyone is so accepting and welcoming, no matter your background, race, gender presentation or anything.”

— Myron Abernathy, cosplaying as a mash-up of Bishop from X-Men and Eazy E from N.W.A.

“I’ve been a Blerd all my life, I’ve had a love for comics since I was 9.”

— Montel Thompson, cosplaying as Moon Knight from the Marvel series

“I love that Dragon Con recognizes the effort we put into cosplay, and provides a space for us to celebrate a genre that we grew up with, even if we didn’t always see ourselves in it. I rejoice when a small Black girl comes up to smile or hug me. It just makes me so happy.”

— Joy Stephens, cosplaying as Rogue from X-Men

Revenge of the Nerds: How Nerd Culture Became Mainstream

revenge of the nerds

The nerds have taken over pop culture!

If you’ve watched a movie, turned on a television or gone on the Internet lately, you’ve probably seen nerds everywhere. They no longer serve as the punch line or the person to pick on — they’re starring in their own movies and shows. Our new heroes are the Tina Feys and Michael Ceras.

Nerd culture is on the rise, which includes the popular websites I Can Has Cheezburger? and Know Your Meme, via email. Science fiction shows are becoming more popular, it’s cool to have the latest electronics, and people flock to comic conventions.

After so many years in the shadows, what is making nerds cool now?

Although the word “nerd” first appeared in the Dr. Seuss book, “If I Ran The Zoo,” it was also used as a synonym for a “square” in a Newsweek article in 1951. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a nerd as “a person who pursues an unfashionable or highly technical interest with obsessive or exclusive dedication.”

A “geek,” however, once referred to early 20th century circus performers whose acts included biting the heads off of live chickens. Similarly, the OED defines a geek as “an overly diligent, unsociable student; any unsociable person obsessively devoted to a particular pursuit.”

Biting the head off a chicken sounds disgusting, but geeks and nerds are now a desirable commodity.

The nerd stereotype used to be negative. For instance, Eugene Felsnic from the 1978 film “Grease” has all of the stereotypical characteristics of a nerd. He wears glasses, is puny, and gets picked on by the tough, leather-jacket wearing ruffians in the T-Birds.

The media’s perception of nerds began to change. Small strides in the world of cool nerd-dom were being made with films like “Revenge of the Nerds” and “Weird Science” in the early ‘80s.

Still, in the ’80s and ’90s, films glamorized action heroes like Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis and Tom Cruise. There were plenty of nerds in films and television, but they weren’t cool. Steve Urkel from “Family Matters,” Screech from “Saved by the Bell” and Carlton from “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” were the butt of every joke.

Stephen Keating, an M.A. in media studies and librarian of The New School Game Club, sees Steve Urkel as the mainstream perception. “Steve Urkel has always been in my mind the prototype of what a nerd is suppose to be,” Keating said.

The nerd transition into mainstream culture has gradually shifted, however — nerds are now trendy. This change can be seen as early as 1990 in “Edward Scissorhands,” where Anthony Michael Hall — previously known for playing geeky roles — played Winona Ryder’s jock boyfriend. Though Hall’s character is muscular and tough, he is vilified. Instead, the cripplingly shy Edward Scissorhands is the romantic interest.

Rather than serving as punching bags, the stars of films and shows in the past 10 years flaunt their nerdiness as a positive trait. Tina Fey’s character Liz Lemon on “30 Rock” dresses as Princess Leia to get out of jury duty and compares herself to Admiral Ackbar, yet she still ends up with Jon Hamm and Matt Damon.

Comic-Con exemplifies this new glorification of the nerd. First held in 1970 in San Diego, Comic-Con was originally a comic book convention, but now showcases films, video games, and has transformed into a Hollywood hot spot attended by celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Olivia Wilde and Rob Lowe. Although it has the capacity to fit over 130,000 guests, it has annually sold out passes since 2007.

Lance Fensterman, group vice president of ReedPOP, which organizes events such as New York Comic Con and New York Anime Fest, pointed to the festival’s wide accessibility as a reason for its growing popularity.

“I think they are attracting more and more casual fans,” said Fensterman via email. “At San Diego Comic-Con it was the ‘Twilight’ fans. At New York Comic Con ‘Walking Dead’ fans. Perhaps some purists think that dilutes the experience, but I tend to believe it only adds to it… We want geek culture to stay strong, so recruiting new members to the tribe in whatever ramp they may find is vital to keeping the community growing and strong.”

There’s even a Quidditch World Cup held annually, modeled after the fictional “Harry Potter” sport. Alex Benepe, CEO and president of the International Quidditch Association, says, “Of about 25 percent of the people who compete are serious athletes, some are a mix between nerd and jock, and the majority are just nerds.”

The event has sold about 3,000 tickets already and is double the size it was last year, when they sold around 10,000 tickets total.

This transition has extended to fashion too. “Geek chic” is a style that embraces geeky stereotypes such as thick, black-rimmed glasses and button up shirts. These play a role in stereotypical hipster clothing, which repurposes classically nerdy clothing into a trendy style.

Even the election of Barack Obama, in contrast to George Bush’s presidency, is an example of the triumphing nerd.

“Barack Obama is the textbook definition of a ‘cool nerd,’” said Fogelnest. “I never saw anyone wearing a t-shirt with Ronald Reagan on it.”

A rise video game popularity also speaks to the mainstream nerd shift.

“Video games are selling very well, and it makes sense that at some point pop culture would react to this change,” Keating said. “Still, I think it’s a bit premature to say that video games are as mainstream as music, movies or other industries with longer track records.”

This shift is also partly due to more access, thanks to the Internet. It is now simple to find once-obscure music, films, comic books and more. One can easily watch all of “Twin Peaks” on Netflix. Downloading Kraftwerk’s discography is one click away.

“It’s so much easier to be a ‘nerd’ these days, which is both wonderful and terrible,” says Fogelnest. “As much as I love being able to instantly download ‘Heavy Metal Parking Lot’ it’s not as special as the crappy VHS dub I got from a friend of a friend.”

Fensterman, for one, doesn’t just see geek culture on the rise — he sees it completely taking over.

“I think that geek culture has come out of the basement and into the mainstream. If you look at video game sales, the top grossing movies , the growing appreciation of graphic literature as a true form of literature, I think that the geeks are inheriting the earth.”

Pro Tip: To really get into nerd culture, you need to be open to the many different interests it has. Talk to people who have the same interests and it will help you better understand what you are passionate about and also discover other new things.

Breaking stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding nerd culture

Nerds are usually seen as socially awkward people with poor social skills. However, this is a wrong assumption. There is a variety of personalities among this group – some are shy while others can communicate well. It’s wrong to think being a nerd limits your ability to socialize.

It’s also not true that nerds only like books or screens. They have many interests, such as gaming, cosplay, art, music, and sports. These hobbies show that nerds are multi-faceted.

Contrary to the belief, many nerds engage in physical activities like martial arts or dancing. One does not need to neglect physical fitness to excel intellectually.

Moreover, nerds have made remarkable contributions to technology, science, literature, and entertainment. Their interest and knowledge has improved the world.

To create an inclusive atmosphere for nerds, we should:

  • Support open-mindedness. Encourage people to accept diverse interests. Respect differences instead of judging them.
  • Encourage collaboration. Organize group projects, workshops, and team-building activities to inspire mutual learning.
  • Promote successes. Celebrate the achievements of nerds. Showcase their contributions to our society.

By breaking the stereotypes around nerd culture, we can create a society that cherishes diversity and recognizes the unique talents of nerds. Embracing nerd culture isn’t just about accepting individual interests, but also curiosity, intellect, and innovation.

Embracing nerd culture as a form of self-expression and identity

Nerd culture shatters the boundaries of social norms. It encourages everyone to explore unique hobbies that they love. From reading fantasy books to playing Dungeons & Dragons , nerds use these activities to learn more about themselves. This shows that an individual’s identity is not restricted by what society wants, but rather by their own interests.

Moreover, it can be used for activism. Engaging with media that celebrates diversity and inclusivity lets nerds voice their views on important topics like social justice. They can also join in conversations about how characters are portrayed in popular culture.

The birth of RPGs during the late ’60s and early ’70s is a noteworthy moment in nerd history. During this time, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson created Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) . This game changed tabletop gaming forever. It gave people a chance to make their own stories and characters, which led to the rise of modern RPGs.

These days, embracing nerd culture is a big part of many people’s identities. It gives them a chance to enjoy their interests without being judged. This helps them grow as people and creates communities based on shared passions. So, whether it’s showing off your comic books or cosplaying at conventions, embracing nerd culture is an awesome way to express who you are.

Encourage individuals to challenge societal norms and accept their nerdiness without judgment. Educate others about nerd culture and its positive impacts on creativity, innovation, and critical thinking . It is essential to understand and embrace these different perspectives. Together, let us celebrate knowledge, imagination, and innovation – no FOMO allowed! Let’s create an inclusive future for all nerds.

Dealing with gatekeeping and elitism within nerd culture

Gatekeeping and elitism in nerd culture are issues that need attention. This is when individuals demand one must meet certain criteria to be a “true nerd”. To tackle this, inclusivity, acceptance, and diversity must be promoted.

Recent years have seen progress in breaking down gatekeeping. Appreciating different interests, experiences, and perspectives has become the focus. Knowing there’s no one-size-fits-all definition of being a nerd creates an inclusive community.

Education is key to addressing gatekeeping. Educating people on the damaging effects helps create awareness. Being a nerd shouldn’t depend on knowledge or adhering to fandoms, but instead on passion and curiosity.

Dialogue between different niches and subcultures within nerd culture helps bridge gaps and reduce elitism. Encouraging interactions between gamers, comic book lovers, cosplayers, etc., encourages understanding.

Prominent figures have spoken out against gatekeeping and elitism. Anita Sarkeesian is a notable cultural critic. She advocates for inclusivity in video game culture, challenging traditional notions of being a gamer. She also champions representation for marginalized groups.

Balancing passion and obsession in nerd culture

Nerd culture, which is about loving niche stuff like comics, games, and tech , has become famous recently. This has had both great and bad effects. On one hand, it’s made a strong community where people with similar interests can meet and talk about their enthusiasm. On the other hand, it’s also created a place where obsession can build.

The key to controlling obsession and passion is keeping a sensible attitude. It’s essential to remember that while these interests are great fun, they should not take over your life or identity. Instead of letting obsession rule everything, try to find a balance that allows you to grow in different areas.

One way to do this is setting limits . Allocating time only for nerd culture activities makes sure you don’t forget the rest of your life. Through discipline and self-control, you can stop your interest from becoming an obsession.

Pro Tip: Make sure your passions make your life better, not worse. Enjoy your nerdy side, but always remember to keep it balanced with other areas of your life.

The contemporary resurgence of nerd culture signifies a modern renaissance that celebrates intellectual pursuits and technological advancements. This cultural shift reinforces the acceptance and integration of nerd culture in mainstream society. The increasing popularity of activities such as video gaming, cosplay, and comic conventions has fostered an inclusive community that values creativity, critical thinking, and innovation.

As this renaissance continues to unfold, it is crucial to recognize the profound impact it has on various aspects of our society. Nerd culture has not only revolutionized the entertainment industry but has also influenced other fields such as education, technology, and even fashion. The emphasis on intelligence, curiosity, and individuality has encouraged innovation and the development of new ideas.

It is essential to acknowledge the importance of fostering a supportive environment for nerds and geeks. By creating spaces that embrace intellectual curiosity and provide opportunities for collaboration and skill development, we can nurture a new generation of thinkers, problem solvers, and innovators. Encouraging individuals to embrace their unique interests can lead to a more diverse and inclusive society that values and respects different perspectives.

Moreover, incorporating elements of nerd culture into mainstream media and popular culture can help break down stereotypes and challenge societal norms. We must also recognize the barriers some face in nerd culture. Historically, there have been stereotypes and prejudices against certain groups, like women or people of color . We must address these issues by promoting representation and diversity. Highlighting achievements of underrepresented people and creating support networks will create an inclusive environment.

Keynotes and Q&As | Our Amazing Speakers

  • Matt Souza – Into the Quantum Realm | YouTube | Spotify | You may not know it, but there is a whole world of ministry happening right under your nose. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, there are people livestreaming, chatting in WhatsApp, posting on social media, and gathering around table-top games, with the express mission to share the love of Jesus with nerds and nerd culture. Let us give you at least a small window into that world; what those ministries look like, and the impact they are having in the lives of real people, all over the globe. And, let us help give you eyes to see how great the need is to reach this community of over 3.2 billion people in even greater ways.
  • Q&A with Matt Souza | YouTube | Spotify   | Mark Lutz hosts and question and answer session with Matt Souza after his keynote.
  • Mike Erre – Genuine Love. Sincere Interest. | YouTube | Spotify | In the gaming world, the phrase “Are ya winning son?” has become notorious. Nerds are tired of having someone ask about their passions with insincere interest. And I think all of us can relate to this. We all have something that we get excited to talk about – our eyes light up when someone asks about it. But we’ve also all experienced moments when as soon as we start talking about it, we see everyone around us lose interest. We recede inward, and learn not to share about what gets us excited. But we know both experientially, and neuroscientifically, that those moments when someone doesn’t do that – when they engage and have sincere interest in our passions – are moments that form some of the deepest relational connections and attachments. And we know that it is on the foundation of those deep relational connections and attachments that we can most effectively speak truth into the lives of those around us.
  • Q&A with Mike Erre | YouTube | Spotify | Mark Lutz hosts and question and answer session with Mike Erre after his keynote.

However, there’s a massive mission field just waiting for youth workers to plug into. You can connect with youth in a way that is both relational and deeply relevant to their lives—all without leaving your home or office. This mission field is the digital world of video games. Live reviews

Everything Pharrell Williams touches seems to turn to gold, musically speaking, not least of all N.E.R.D, the mega-platinum selling hip hop-rap-pop crossover band that he fronted for over a decade. The band formed from Williams and Chad Hugo (aka production superduo The Neptunes) teaming up with drummer Shae Hayley in 2001, and since then their hit singles such as 'Rockstar', 'Maybe', and 'She Wants To Move', show the funky soulfulness of their bass-driven beats and have firmly secured their popularity.

For all their slick production and genre-hopping creativity, what makes N.E.R.D truly incredible to see live is the sheer, bouncing energy they bring, feeding off their audience to create an electrifying gig experience. Their songs are unmistakably catchy and guarantee to set crowds a-hopping, such as the set staples from their first album 'In Search Of...', such as the uplifting 'Run To The Sun', and the dirty basslines of 'Lapdance'.

When I saw N.E.R.D a few years ago at Brixton Academy, London, they were nothing short of incredible. The hyped-up atmosphere and the musical force of a full live band, teamed with Williams' charisma as a frontman, made the show one of the most fun and exciting I have ever been to. As an extra-special ending to their set, the band invited hundreds of female fans up onto the stage to groove alongside them for their encore, and you could tell it was out of the pure love of the energy from playing live and interacting with their audience. Seeing N.E.R.D live will more than likely surprise you, and certainly will never be a disappointment.

Nowadays Pharrell Williams is known for being a hot-shot, chart-topping producer or the genius behind ‘Happy.’ However, in 2000, he was part of a group known as N.E.R.D. Taking the production know-how he and childhood friend and musical partner-in-crime Chad Hugo had from their other project, The Neptunes, they got into the studio and dropped four albums that spawned a number of hits including ‘Lapdance,’ ‘Everyone Nose (All the Girls Standing in the Line for the Bathroom) and ‘Spaz.’ They have played around the world and also supported Kanye West and the Gorillaz on their tours.

Because of the high energy that N.E.R.D. bring to the stage, they can play any venue and still come up with the same result. Whether playing the smaller clubs in their Virginia Beach hometown or an outdoor stage by the Brooklyn Bridge at midnight, they bring the party wherever they go. The show brings the band, a DJ set up and Shay Haley, who serves as N.E.R.D.’s third member. With the combination of rock beats, a funky bass and turntables, it’s hard to throw the group into a genre, but at this point, that doesn’t really matter because even the wallflowers who hard bust a move get their grooves on to N.E.R.D. And while Pharrell might not have been donning that infamous cowboy hat, he’s got so much swag that any other accessory would be a bonus.

evtan’s profile image

When No one Ever Really Dies, better known as N.E.R.D performed at UC Riverside’s annual Heat Music Festival, they attracted a ton of people to their stage; including me, and it was definitely a worthwhile experience.

Unlike the rest of the crowd, I really didn’t know their songs, especially since it was my friends idea to come to this set, in fact I didn’t know any of their songs. BUT…they really knew how to hype up the crowd, even though most of the crowd were already fans of N.E.R.D. The duo, consisting of Pharrell and Chad Hugo, had a large hype group that seemingly covered the entire stage. With little effort, they got the crowd moving for their song “Spaz,” swinging their arms and rapping along with them. They kept the energy going while performing “You Know What” and “Rockstar.”

In retrospect I’m really glad that I saw them live, because when I went back to listen to their studio sessions it just wasn’t the same. The amount of excitement that they add to their live versions really takes the songs to a whole different level. Also, the performance was truly in Pharrell fashion, giving everything he’s got because it’s what he loves doing most.

An Ode to Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts Tour Tank Tops

At her sold-out shows, the pop sensation has been giving the staple a twist the way only she can

Every product on this page was chosen by a Harper's BAZAAR editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Of course, Rodrigo didn’t exactly grow up with the Sex and the City generation. In fact, the Grammy-winning pop hit machine celebrated her first birthday a mere two days before the HBO series’ final episode aired. But it seems that in early adulthood, she has found comfort in the hilarious, brash, and often messy lives of its four protagonists. (Oh, and like this author, Rodrigo identifies as a Carrie .)

So what better way to share that than with a personalized top that serves as a billboard for the thousands of fans who’ve been packing stadiums across the country to see her (as well as the countless more viewing clips online)? As a way to reference her favorite pieces of pop culture and project jokes and more to the audience, Rodrigo’s tank tops have become one of the most winning aspects of her Guts World Tour .

As with the SATC tank she wore for her Big Apple audience, the singer has used her tops to spotlight culture from the turn of the millennium, a time period that has interested her since the beginning of her career. Longtime fans will recall when Rodrigo celebrated the 2021 release of her debut album, Sour , with a live, prom-themed set on YouTube, and the promotional art winked to the cover of Hole’s Live Through This . Then there was the “Good 4 U” video , for which Rodrigo donned a cheerleading uniform identical to Mandy Moore’s from The Princess Diaries (2001).

As the Guts tour rages on, such nods have only become been more plentiful and expansive, encompassing everything from TLC’s “No Scrubs” to the Beatles’ “I’m Down.” At her first show in Palm Springs, the Disney alum rocked a tank that said, “I’m Just a Girl,” in homage to No Doubt’s 1995 hit debut single. Fittingly, a little over a month later, the pop star took a break from her tour to join No Doubt onstage at Coachella , where she wore another tank—one bedazzled with “I ❤️ ND.”

2024 coachella valley music and arts festival weekend 1 day 2

With these winks, it doesn’t feel like the “Vampire” artist is simply trying to appeal to the generations before her (and they don’t reek of “born in the wrong era” Tumblrcore either). Instead, the nods speak to the genuine approach Rodrigo takes to making her music. Throughout her shows, she has brought out ’90s–’00s stars like Jewel and Sheryl Crow, arguably surprising guests for a singer of her age, whose fan base pools in the tween-to-teen age bracket. But an obvious thread connects the work of these icons and the new hitmaker: Rodrigo simply wants to extend her appreciation to the greats who’ve inspired her confessional songwriting, and her tank tops have become her newest outlet for doing so.

At the same time, the tanks also perfectly capture Rodrigo’s cheeky sense of humor. Tracks like “All-American Bitch” and “Bad Idea Right?” explore themes of feminism and sexuality with dry humor and impressive depth. Onstage, she’s brought this same sauciness to her tanks.

At one performance, “ Ne pas toucher ” was splashed across Rodrigo’s chest. (That’s French for “Do not touch.”) At another, her shirt said: “I kiss better than I cook.” With plenty of songs about disappointing men in her discography, Rodrigo obviously knows what it’s like to date a dud, and one of her tops—hearkening back to Britney Spears’s memorable ’02 baby tee —simply instructed her fans to “Dump him.”

Even Rodrigo’s friends have been getting in on the fun, like fellow singer and Gen Z star Conan Gray, who featured on the star’s Instagram in a tank that said: “U call urself a Livie? Name 10 Olivia Rodriguez songs …” (a reference to this viral TikTok ).

I honestly can’t think of a better garment to become the Rodrigo staple than the tank top—at least for right now. It’s understated, playful, and reliable. Like her discography, Rodrigo’s style isn’t afraid to embrace her youth and her passions. With a fusion of Clueless schoolgirl prep and early-’00s Avril Lavigne punk , the singer-songwriter dresses like an actual 21-year-old—a stylish one who wears vintage Versace on the red carpet , mind you , but still, one who knows who she is and what she wants. Only time will tell how Rodrigo’s style continues to evolve with her career. For now, as the tank declares: She’s just a girl.

Stroke survivor.

Being only 5 months into my recovery I have found so much valuable information, other survivors & their feelings thru this podcast

Awesome-Just what I’ve been looking for

I’m 2-1/2 years post aneurysm, I have been searching and searching for something, anything to help me understand the new me. I also found out I’m suffering from PTSD which is a result of the stroke. I just found your WAAF Walk podcast one day ago, and I keep finding more and more, I haven’t got to listen to the Recovery Mindset Program, I think that’s my next stop, I love your upbeat and positive outlook, keep doing what you’re doing! You have me hooked, I will continue to follow your Neuronerds Podcast, thank you
I came on to listen because Rachel is my niece. I think your show is amazing. You keep the show positive, alive and funny. Your personality is just perfect. It’s very depressing and lonely being paralyzed. You made me smile for this hour. People really don’t understand what it does to your life and especially to your family! Only those who have walked a mile in my shoes. Thank you for doing this.❤️

Tour guides flock to a trivia competition that demands encyclopedic knowledge of NYC

Emily Malterre

The Panorama Challenge is one of the fiercest trivia competition in New York and requires encyclopedic knowledge of the city. It's where tour guides can shine.

SCOTT DETROW, HOST:

The Panorama Challenge is one of the fiercest trivia competitions in New York City. It takes place at the Queens Museum, which houses a scale model of New York that was first created for the 1964 World's Fair. This annual trivia challenge requires encyclopedic knowledge of the city and attracts those who know it best, mostly tour guides. Earlier this month, reporter Emily Malterre attended the 2024 Panorama Challenge.

JONATHAN TURER: How many people in the room have been to Panorama Challenge before?

EMILY MALTERRE, BYLINE: Quizmaster Jonathan Turer welcomes the crowd.

TURER: How many people have one Panorama Challenge before?

MALTERRE: Two hundred New York City nerds are ready for a cutthroat competition. It's the first year back from the pandemic.

MEGAN MAROD: Well, so we're all a part of team GANYC Panic. It stands for the Guides Association of New York City.

MALTERRE: Megan Marod is a proud, licensed tour guide. This eight-member team has never won the Panorama Challenge since it started in 2007.

MAROD: I think everyone's happy. It's a lot of history fanatics and New York City fanatics all, like, at a history and New York City fanatic party.

MALTERRE: The competitors are all standing on walkways above the Panorama exhibit. They look down on 895,000 miniature buildings, plus trees, roads, even a tiny plane on a string that continuously takes off and lands at the airport. It gives you the feeling that you are looming over the city. The model includes all five boroughs - Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Ayinde Stevens is a guide who specializes in the subway and gives tours of Grand Central Terminal. He says he's mostly prepared.

AYINDE STEVENS: I feel really good tonight except for one category - Staten Island. I love New York City to death, but I barely go to Staten Island.

MALTERRE: The competition includes some general New York trivia, but half of the questions are extra niche, like this one, which starts with a clip from the movie "Enchanted."

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: The finale of this musical number takes place in front of a sculpture created by the first woman to receive a public art commission in New York City. Pros, name the sculptor.

MALTERRE: If you didn't immediately have sculptor Emma Stebbins on the tip of your tongue, don't worry, neither did I. And some questions get quite technical.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: Pros, from 1951 to 1953, which agency ran the subways from the offices located above the tracks at Jay Street?

MALTERRE: There are people here who actually knew the answer...

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: Wow.

MALTERRE: ...The New York City Board of Transportation, which existed only until the 1950s. Sixty questions later, the judges tally up scores. David Madore, a tour guide and Broadway musician, was hopeful about GANYC Panic's chances.

You had concerns about Staten Island. How did that go?

DAVID MADORE: Well, we still have concerns about Staten Island regardless, but we seemed to come through on a few of those questions.

MALTERRE: Then it's time for the big reveal from Quizmaster Turer.

TURER: In first place...

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: Oh, God.

TURER: ...With 57 points, GANYC Panic.

MALTERRE: The prize for winning the Panorama Challenge? Their team name carved on a plaque and bragging rights for the rest of the year.

Jpmorgan chase’s woke dei style guide nixes terms like ‘manpower,’ ‘blacklist’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Jumping through these linguistic hoops is no cakewalk.

JPMorgan Chase employees mocked a recently-unveiled Diversity Equity and Inclusion style guide which clamps down on anti-“woke” language.

The glossary of “not recommended” words and phrases lives on the company’s internal intranet, and was obtained by The Post courtesy of an anti-woke whistleblower.

“Our language matters. And like our diverse culture of respect, equity, and inclusion, the words and terms we use as communicators continue to evolve and become more culturally competent — reflecting our values and intersectional global workforce. To communicate with empathy, we recommend you use the most inclusive terminology,” the guide declares in a preamble.

People reflected in the window of JPMorgan Chase headquarters on Park Avenue, midtown Manhattan, New York City on July 13, 2012

Employees should avoid gendered terms like “man hours” and “manpower” and instead use “labor hours” and “workforce.”

References to “good schools” and “good neighborhoods” are to be replaced by the term “well-resourced.” Instead of “blacklist,” the firm recommends “disallow list.” Company “pow-wows” — which could upset Native Americans — are also a no-no.

The glossary delves into geopolitics, suggesting employees be sure to refer to the “war in Ukraine” — and refrain from calling it a “conflict.”

The glossary offered no explanation.

Other verboten terms include “cakewalk.”

“Like ‘white glove treatment,’ this term is rooted in the history and mistreatment of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Instead use ‘easy to do or achieve,'” The bank noted. The phrase comes from a pre-Civil War dance once performed by slaves.

Even compliments can get you into trouble. The word “articulate” is objectionable “when used to compliment members of certain communities. The remark suggests that the person in question is expected to be less competent, intelligent or well-spoken.”

A man walking past the JP Morgan Chase World Headquarters on Park Avenue in New York, July 13, 2012

The glossary is also replete with bloated definitions of woke warhorses like “microaggressions,” which it notes are “everyday verbal, nonverbal and environmental slights, snubs, insults actions, remarks or questions that — whether intentional or unintentional — communicate hostile, derogatory or negative messages to a person or group based in whole or in part upon the community they align with or belong to.”

Company insiders dismissed the woke words as noise.

“They are creating unnecessary friction and it’s not helping anyone,” a senior JPMorgan executive told The Post — insisting that behind the scenes the bank was still committed to the quality and merit of its people and products.

“There is nobody internally that takes any of this seriously — at the end of the day this is a bank. There is an enormous DEI infrastructure and they have no results to show.”

JPMorgan has long boasted about its DEI bonafides. The company maintains a full webpage dedicated showing their support for the movement. In 2020, as violent Black Lives Matter riots raged across the country, the company announced a $30 billion commitment to “advance economic inclusion among Black, Hispanic and Latino customers.”

A screenshot of the JP Morgan woke style guide.

“People should oppose DEI because it is the layer of professional (and well paid) racial grievance bureaucrats that have been inserted into every profession, not to improve the true goal of that organization, but to create racialized struggle sessions,” said Jason Curtis Anderson, policy director of the nonprofit One City Rising.

A rep for JPMorgan insisted the glossary has existed internally at the company since 2021 and that following its suggestions was “entirely voluntary.”

Some of the offensive terms highlighted by JPMorgan include:

Cakewalk White List, Black List Conflict in Ukraine Disabled Good school, Good neighborhood

Grandfathered Illegal Immigrant Man Hours, Manpower

Crackdown, crack-the-whip

Madonna Talks Life on Tour With Her Kids: “Nothing Brings Me More Happiness”

Madonna and three children.

Madonna has been clear from the beginning that The Celebration Tour is no mere “greatest hits” circuit. It’s more like an artist’s MoMA retrospective blown up into an arena tour showcasing her singular contributions to the culture. It’s also the Queen of Pop’s most deeply personal tour yet, paying tribute to her influences, mentors, parents, and the friends and collaborators she’s lost. Nowhere is that personal touch more apparent than the inclusion of four of her children in the show. Across 78 performances so far, Madonna has worked double-duty as mom with son David and daughters Mercy, Stella, and Estere along for the ride—each one getting their own moment on stage. Mercy accompanies her mother on piano during “Bad Girl,” while David duets with his mom on “Mother and Father” (which, apparently, required the young musician to work up a bit of confidence to do). Twins Stella and Estere meanwhile, show off their dance skills during “Don’t Tell Me” and a segment dedicated to ballroom.

Ahead of her final arena dates in Mexico and a historic (potentially record-breaking) free show in Rio de Janeiro, Madonna sat down to answer questions over e-mail about life on the road with her children.

Rocco performed on stage during MDNA , and Lola worked in the wardrobe department on that same tour. Your children always seem to be involved in some capacity with your work. How does that feel as a mother?

I have always been blessed with children who are interested in music, dance, and art. Starting from the top with Lola , who was not only an incredible ballet dancer and and a rhythmic gymnast, switching to musical theater and contemporary dance. Now she is a unique singer and song writer in her own right. When I go on tour, nothing brings me more happiness to know, we are all working on the same show creating the magic together. It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show.  Of course, I am also their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves. We are a family of artists but are also a family and that’s what happens.

It seems like your children have been honing their talents for years. How important is it for you as a mother to make sure they take their art seriously?

Because The Celebration Tour is a retrospective of my life, I thought it made perfect sense to include all of my children still living with me in the show. As they all dance, and play musical instruments, and have been doing so for years.  David has played guitar since he was a child.  Mercy has played piano since she was eight and has been classically trained most of her life. Eventually, when I adopted the twins, they started to play piano and dance as well.  There is always an endless parade of music and dance teachers coming and going in our house. And then we add to that Djing as Estere showed a keen interest in learning. She started taking DJ lessons and took it very seriously.

Madonna with Mercy

Each of the children has their own moment in the show. Mercy James playing piano during “Bad Girl” was a highlight. Any back story on how that all came together?

I saw a strange poetic juxtaposition of hedonism, erotic exploration emerging into the light of Mercy, sitting stoically at her grand piano playing Chopin as she beckoned me towards her, making me think about the choices I have made in my life.  Singing “Bad Girl” was kind of a confession, not an apology, and I felt we had an unspoken understanding of what was happening.

Madonna and daugther.

Stella dancing during “Don’t Tell Me.”

Stella and Mercy.

Stella performs in “Don’t Tell Me,” which is a big number during the show. How was she with learning the choreography?

Stella, who I would say is my shyest child, comes alive on stage, and I love having her as my little cowgirl. But she happens to be an incredible fine artist, and I’m hoping that she follows in the footsteps of Rocco who after being a B-boy, skater, and graffiti artist has really come into his own as an incredible painter.

David during the show’s finale.

David singing a verse during “Mother and Father” was fantastic. Has he expressed any interest in following in your footsteps with a musical career? He had originally only played guitar at the beginning of the tour. Did it take some convincing to get him to sing?

“Mother and Father” is one of my favorite moments in the show because it gave me a chance to not only honor my mother and her memory but also to honor David’s mother and her memory. He has always wanted to sing and play guitar.  He loves being on stage. This is nothing new. I love that we both get to sing to our mothers. Much of the show is about motherhood, family, and the importance of that in my artistic life.

Estere

Estere

Estere, backstage in a “Britney Spears” t-shirt.

How did Estere get so into ballroom? Does she have any vogue mentors (aside from you)?

While Estere was learning how to DJ she became interested in ballroom competitions and just by luck, one of my choreographer’s assistants, Ivy Mugler, has her own ballroom house called House of Mugler.  She started taking Estere aside during rehearsals in another room, and within a couple of weeks she was doing death drops and spins and surprising us with her ability.  So, of course we had to turn that section of the show into Estere’s Ball.

Because this tour is a celebration of your entire career, did you kids learn or realize anything new about you?

I think what my children learned the most in this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them.  And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears.

The tour just wrapped up its U.S. dates. With five shows in Mexico City coming up and the huge free concert in Rio, what’s going through your mind right now?

This show was created for an indoor arena. Transforming and adapting it to perform outdoors on the beach, with no roof in Rio is going to be quite an undertaking and full of surprises. God willing, we will pull it off, and it will be an experience they will never forget.

How Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Relationship Has Changed After Spending Tour Break Together

preview for Taylor Swift’s Iconic Career Evolution

As Taylor Swift gets ready for the next leg of her international Eras Tour, she is also preparing to part ways with boyfriend Travis Kelce again. The pair have been dating since 2023, and have had to manage very different and distant obligations. Luckily, a source says that “all the time they’ve spent together recently” in between tour dates has “deepened their bond.”

The source added that the couple took “a trip up the California coast” after Swift’s new album release of The Tortured Poets Department to “celebrate privately,” saying, “They’re making the most of the time they have together.”

The pair were not entirely alone—they were seen in Carmel-by-the-Sea with friends Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper, as well as Kelce’s mom, Donna.

Another source previously said that during this break from work, the pair were “focused on rest and recuperation and relaxing at home and having low-key and chill time together.”

“They are enjoying movie nights in her home theater, catching up on films and shows they’ve missed,” they continued, explaining that the couple is working on “scheduling” the upcoming long distance and their various projects so that they can “see each other as much as possible” because they “don’t want to spend too much time apart.”

Kelce is spending the NFL offseason in Los Angeles after the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl win in February, taking time to see Swift in both Singapore and Australia when she was performing. He is currently filming a new game show called Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity.

Ellen DeGeneres Addresses ‘Getting Kicked Out of Show Business’ on Her New Comedy Tour: ‘It’s Been a Toll on My Ego’

By Krystie Lee Yandoli

Krystie Lee Yandoli

As she strode onto the famed comedy stage of the Largo at the Coronet Theater in the heart of West Hollywood on Wednesday night, Ellen DeGeneres was a woman in command. A sold-out crowd of about 200 fans burst into roaring applause, eager to see the comedian turned talk-show host return to her comedy roots on the first night of her Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour . And she didn’t disappoint. Dressed in a simple, black long-sleeved shirt, white pants, and sneakers, DeGeneres addressed the elephant in the room with her first words.

“I used to say that I didn’t care what other people thought of me and I realized…I said that at the height of my popularity,” DeGeneres said, prompting the audience to erupt in laughter. “It is such a waste of time to worry about what other people think…Right now I’m hoping you’re thinking, ‘This is marvelous, I’m so happy to be here.’ But you could be thinking, ‘Let’s see how this goes.’”

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Her Wednesday night set — culled from material DeGeneres said she’s been working on for about six months, including in a handful of performances — kicked off with a recap of what she’s been up to since her talk-show ended: gardening, a lot of sweatpants-wearing, and collecting chickens as pets. She joked that as someone who once hosted a daily show, she appreciates the plight of the chicken who has to lay an egg every day. Still, most of the routine found her grappling with having become Public Enemy No. 1 — a whiplash turn from her once-firm reputation as the happy-go-lucky talk-show host who ended each episode telling her audience to “be kind to one another.”

“What else can I tell you?” she mused, mock-reflecting on her recent past before adding sarcastically, “Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business. There’s no mean people in show business.”

Richard lewis, comic and 'curb your enthusiasm' star, dead at 76, kate berlant's killer solo show is all about losing control.

“I didn’t go to business school. I went to Charlie’s Chuckle Hutt,” DeGeneres joked. “The show was called Ellen and everybody was wearing T-shirts that said ‘Ellen’ and there were buildings on the Warner Brothers lot that said ‘Ellen,’ but I don’t know that that meant I should be in charge.”

She chalked up some of the vitriol she faced at the time to sexism, noting that “there are consequences” for not following the pre-existing rules and gender roles. Referencing the cancellation of her eponymous sitcom in the 1990s after she’d announced to the world that she was gay, she added wryly, “For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business…Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”

The demise of her talk show seems especially painful for DeGeneres since, as she described in her set, it had been her way back to being embraced after her Nineties exile. “I’m giving stuff away…and I danced, then I was mean and they didn’t like me again,” she said. “It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder.”

As a 66-year-old woman, DeGeneres said she’s also grown increasingly aware of the aging process both physically and mentally. She finds herself thinking about existential subjects like time and the universe, and said her doctor recently told her she has osteoporosis and arthritis. Plus, she joked, now she’s at a point in her life where she’s obsessing over Wheel of Fortune .

Bringing up chickens as another metaphor for women and gender roles, DeGeneres made her point with “one last chicken joke,” as she put it. “Why did the chicken cross the road? Because she wanted to and you wouldn’t ask a rooster that.”

At the conclusion of her set, the crowd gave DeGeneres a standing ovation, prompting her to return to the stage for a candid conversation with the audience. DeGeneres called on people one by one as they asked questions and shared messages of gratitude. One same-sex couple said they had gotten married earlier that day and asked for marital advice. (DeGeneres’ wife of 16 years, Portia de Rossi, briefly made an appearance onstage during the Q&A, at fans’ request; DeGeneres explained that the last few years had been very tough on de Rossi as well, saying, “We were both just laying low for a while.”) One woman thanked DeGeneres for her original Netflix comedy special (2018’s Relatable ) because it made her mom laugh when she was diagnosed with cancer. Another woman expressed her thanks to DeGeneres for participating in her autistic daughter’s bat mitzvah. One person who said they’d been inspired by DeGeneres’ positivity asked if she used dancing as a means of escape during her recent tough period.

“No. It’s hard to dance when you’re crying,” DeGeneres replied. “But I am dancing now.”

DeGeneres flashed another moment of sensitivity and bewilderment when a fan asked if her first go-round with public scrutiny after coming out prepared her for the next one, when The Ellen DeGeneres Show collapsed.

“This was a whole different thing,” she replied. “This was like, ‘What is going on?’ It was so hurtful. I couldn’t gain perspective. I couldn’t do anything to make myself understand that it wasn’t personal… I just thought, ‘Well this is not the way I wanted to end my career, but this is the way it’s ending.’”

DeGeneres added that it took her a long time to figure out what she wanted to say on the topic and how she wanted to say it.

Citing the self-help book The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom , DeGeneres explained that she’s made her peace with the fact that everyone has their own reasons for making certain choices and “they have to live with their stuff.”

“I do realize that whatever happens may have nothing to do with me, it’s just somebody else’s stuff,” she said. “So no, I will not [seek revenge].”
