ZOE PATERSON

The problem with visiting New York is knowing where to begin. But even if you don't immediately rush off to view the world-famous sights and landmarks of this most dynamic of cities, sometimes just being there is enough. The wonder of New York is in the energy and diversity that emanates from its densely packed, multicultural population. It vibrates with colliding cultures and languages, as highlife and lowlife rub together to produce a unique atmosphere, 24-hours a day.

Whether lolling on a bench in leafy Central Park, watching the world go by from a French bistro in Soho, or gazing up at Lady Liberty from the deck of the Staten Island Ferry, most visitors will feel they've done it all before. This is because New York is so familiar to anyone who has ever seen a movie or watched television. There is something special, however, in actually seeing the familiar landmarks and experiencing the pulse of The City That Never Sleeps.

Five boroughs make up New York City: Staten Island, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. But many visitors never leave Manhattan, with loads of things to do and see packed into this small area relative to the other boroughs. This includes the 24-hour pasta restaurants of Little Italy, and the bustling sidewalks of Chinatown, the jazz clubs of Greenwich Village, and the theatres of Broadway. Of course, iconic sights include the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and Times Square.

New York has been described as the best three-day city in the world, and that's about right. After a frenzy of museums, galleries, bars, and clubs, many visitors are ready for a break. Fortunately, there's a lot of choice in excursions. Outdoor attractions include the National Parks of upstate New York, the beaches of Long Island, or simply the leafy oasis of Central Park. Whatever you're after, New York is ready and waiting to bewitch, enchant, and bewilder.

New York's public transport system is relatively good and cheap, including buses and the subway. There are also the iconic and ever-present yellow cabs, although they are more expensive. Visitors should avoid unlicensed cabs, sometimes called gypsy or pirate cabs.

One can use a combination of these or just get around on foot. Walking is often the best way to see the city. During rush hours, when buses and taxis are caught in gridlock and the subway is overcrowded, stretching the legs can be the quickest option.

Usually, the most efficient way to get around is the 24-hour underground system, especially as most of Manhattan's sights are near subway stations. Like other massive cities, however, this can be extremely confusing at first.

The bus system is simpler but slower, a good option for shorter distances or for travelling across town. Driving in New York is not recommended as traffic is heavy, drivers are rude and aggressive, and parking is both rare and exorbitant.

The nightlife in New York City encompasses jazz bars, nightclubs, lounges, comedy clubs, and live shows, with something happening around every corner. The Village, Broadway, Bowery, and Madison Square Garden are just a few destinations for evening entertainment in New York.

As a hub of the jazz world, New York is home to venues such as 55 Bar and Arthur's Tavern. Jazz tours from Greenwich Village to Harlem are a fun option for enthusiasts, with a stop at the legendary Apollo Theatre a great attraction to tick off the bucketlist.

As the launching pad of big-name comedians such as Jerry Seinfeld, New York also has many comedy shows, with some of the best happening at the New York Comedy Club or the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (UCB).

Of course, there are always famous Broadway shows in New York. Try the Palace or Eugene O'Neill theatres for the latest productions. Broadway shows are expensive, hence the popularity of the three TKTS discount ticket booths, the most popular of which is in Times Square.

They open every day at 11 am, but the queues form well before this. You can pick up last-minute tickets for half of the regular price, depending on what's available. There's seldom a queue at 5pm, with last-minute prices dropping even further.

Nightclubs come and go quickly in New York City, as the fickle population becomes enamoured with the newest venues and trends. But you can always rest assured that whatever you want, the City of Dreams will have plenty of it.

Live music venues covering hip hop, rock, indie, and almost any other genre imaginable abound, and well-established venues offer events like poetry readings. At any given time, internationally-acclaimed DJs are usually heating up dancefloors in the New York darkness.

World-class performing arts venues are a dime a dozen in a city that boasts Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, Lincoln Centre, and Carnegie Hall, and you can take your pick of ballet, opera, symphony orchestras, and chamber music.

For up-to-date events information on New York City, pick up a copy of the Village Voice or Time Out New York, both of which are accessible online.

The amount and calibre of stores in the city will blow visitors away. Offering some of the best and most expensive shopping in the world, 5th Avenue is synonymous with classy high-end department stores such as Bergdorf's and Saks. Madison Avenue is known as the trendy road, boasting 15 blocks of celebrity designer shops such as Chanel, Jimmy Choo, and Prada. Soho is one of New York's poshest outdoor malls, with cobblestone streets and loft-like spaces creating a pretty and unique shopping experience.

As cosmopolitan as New York maybe, visitors on a tighter budget can still find plenty of bargains at the city's flea markets, which offer some top quality goods with stores touting designer knockoffs, antiques, jewellery, curios, thrift wear, home furnishings, and cosmetics.

Chinatown is a budget shopper's paradise with cheap knockoffs on offer, and haggling common practice. Century 21 is considered 'New York's best-kept secret' for bargain hunters with more than 15 departments of quality and designer merchandise at 25 to 75% off retail prices.

Whether shopping in upscale Madison Avenue or the bargain-friendly Lower East Side, New York has something to offer everyone. Souvenirs can often be tacky, including miniature Statues of Liberty, I (heart) NY gear, New York Yankees merchandise, and Broadway posters.

With New York's countless attractions, it would take months to see and do everything this vibrant city has on offer. The must-see New York attractions include iconic structures and buildings such as the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, the Empire State Building, Times Square, and the Chrysler Building. Among all the skyscrapers, Central Park provides a green haven for relaxation and exercise. Many first-time visitors to New York don't leave Manhattan at all, but the four other boroughs of the city - Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island - all have their own appeal and are worth exploring for those wanting a broader experience of the metropolis. Taking a ride on the Staten Island Ferry is one of the best free activities NYC has to offer.

For cultural vultures, there are wonderful museums to explore, such as the American Museum of Natural History or the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There are also fewer high-brow museums: at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, for instance, visitors can play superheroes on film.

An easy way to see the sights is to take a ride on one of New York's topless tour buses. It may not be as exciting as exploring the city on foot, but it's a great way to learn and see a lot quickly. Central Park also provides a great thoroughfare for sightseers exploring Manhattan on foot, and the grid-pattern layout of the streets makes finding your way fairly simple. The New York subway is a good, cheap option for those needing to cover greater distances.

Those planning a lot of sightseeing should consider purchasing the New York Pass, which covers about 80 NYC attractions and allows the holder to skip the often lengthy queues at popular sites.

New York is a great place for vacations with children. Parents can take the family out to Ellis Island to see the Statue of Liberty or trek up the Empire State Building to stand on its observation deck, the panoramic views of the metropolis a joy at any age.

For active children, a stroll through Central Park will give them plenty of space to stretch their legs and in winter months don't miss ice skating at the Trump Wollman Rink or Rockefeller Plaza. The amazing shops around New York City are also perfect for those rainy days.

Options include Toys 'R Us in Times Square, NIKETOWN, or the decadent Dylan's Candy Bar, where kids will go wild at the number of sugary candies and chocolates available. The Brooklyn Children's Museum is also worth a visit, as are the New York Aquarium and Central Park Zoo.

For warm summer nights, nothing beats a baseball game at Yankee Stadium, complete with hot dogs and popcorn. With so much to see, children visiting New York City will be sure to have a memorable and unforgettable experience.

New York City is famous for roadside vendors selling all-American goodness, like hotdogs, corndogs, bagels, and donuts. But it's an international affair when dining out, with offerings of cuisine from all over the world meaning it would take a lifetime to sample them all.

With more than eight thousand restaurants to choose from, it is difficult to know where to begin. Chinatown has restaurants serving Cantonese, Sichuan, and Shanghai cuisine, while there are also a few Chinese restaurants where dim sum is available throughout the day.

The popular Times Square is plagued with mediocre chain restaurants. But there are a few wonderful eateries beyond the tourist traps. New York's steakhouses offer a variety of delicious steak options from porterhouse steak to New York strip steak.

Everything is big in the United States and the pizzas and pizza pies are no different. With plenty of fantastic pizza and Italian restaurants around the city, it's a pizza lover's paradise. Many small pizzerias sell the iconic New York-style pizza.

Ukrainian, Indian, and Japanese cuisine can be found in the East Village, while Harlem is synonymous with African and Soul food. Queens offers the most variety with Greek, Irish, Latin American, Russian, Indian, and Kosher fare to tantalise the taste buds.

New York City has a humid subtropical climate, with cold winters and hot, moist summers. The city's coastal location ensures that winters (December to February) are not as cold as inland cities on the same latitude, and daytime temperatures generally stay above freezing point but average lows drop to 27°F (-3°C). Snow is common in winter, but the amount varies, and winter rain is common. Spring in New York is pleasantly warm, and the weather heats up to high temperatures of around 77°F (25°C) by mid-May. Summers (June to August) are generally swelteringly hot and humid, with average highs hitting 84°F (29°C). The best time to travel to New York is in autumn when temperatures are mild, days are sunny and humidity is not too high.

Top 3 airlines serving from Scotland to New York

My overall experience with Singapore Airlines is great. Will definitely fly Singapore airline again.

When boarding, after business class should be premium economy, but economy class already lined-up at the gate blocking premium economy to board. Singapore airline crew should done a better job to organize this chaos :( Thank you.

It seems paying premium economy does not make difference with economy. No priority boarding, not worthy paying extra$$$ for premium economy.

Perfect experience from boarding through to leaving the flight, comfortable and personalised service from all staff, highly recommended

They were able to assist my elderly father and myself after not being able to check in to scoot. The counter service was phenomenal. They did what they could to get us on the next plane so we could catch our Connecting flight. Scoot closed early on us so we ended up missing our flight.

They are great with every aspect of customer service. Helped my elderly father and aided him with using the restroom.

I did not like anything. Flight experience was bad overall.

Due to the delay of my first flight, my connecting flight with JetBlue was canceled by Singapore Airlines, but the JetBlue crew was very accommodating and rebooked a seat for me. The crew was very nice and had good attitude.

The overall operation needs to be improved. The in-flight services took forever and sometimes ran out of options.

The male traveller seated in the row in front diagonally opposite my husbands seat across the aisle as soon as the seatbelt sign went off moved across the aisle into the seat in front of my husband for the entire journey from London to Singapore he had his seat reclined and pushed back and the seat touching my husbands knees for the entire journey from London to Singapore. very uncomfortable for my husband.

Very comfortable Prem economy seats for a long haul flight. Had a problem with the tv that the crew fixed so was great!

Excellent. Planes are a little older and could get some refurbishment, but besides that everything was excellent.

we were upgraded which was a blessing and tender mercy for us. I fell the day before and was in extreme pain from knee to shoulder. Sitting in a more comfortable seat during the flight was an unexpected blessing and experience.

Not impressed with check in desk staff at Vancouver airport. Not a professional mind service and not cared or tried to help. Don’t think I would fly with them again

Seats were very comfortable. Crew were excellent. Food very good.

Very comfortable flights. Not so many new releases in terms of films.

I felt thirsty and asked the flight attendent for water, but no one came for more than half an hour.

The crew were fine. I didn’t enjoy the food at all. I found it unappetising and really had trouble eating it. The comfort level was fine and our return flight is with Cathay Pacific but honestly I probably wouldn’t fly Cathay Pacific again.

Everything went smooth. All flights were on time No changing gates, . No changing flights . It was like a completely different airlines tha n the last time I used Cathay Pacific . The last flight, 2 months ago, I had before this one was from Philippines also . I got changed in Manila and was told it only added 2 hours onto my flight . My 20 hour return trip ended up being 30 hours return with a 10.0 hour layover in New York with no seats anywhere . Everyone was sleeping or sitting on the floor . Unlike the hotel I was given in Manila to wait for this flight home . I never thought I would use Cathay Pacific again . But I did and this time you were great! I should have complained about the flight and layover from Hell a couple months ago. Consider that I am complaining about that august/23 flight now . Thank you got the great flying experience on my way home from philippines .

Everything was good food could be better but ok for economy on my 2nd flight the head ph jack are bad you have to hold pushed in to hear anything but other then that very nice service

WiFi didn’t work on both sectors so made killing time harder - planes clean modern and good flight crew - would do again if WiFi works

6hrs fly they dont give you a glass of water from seoul to singapore need to buy drink and food plus they charge for bag on international fly is always Free 1 bag from seoul to singapore is Not a local fly you are traveling true asia same story from singapore to Bali no water drink after payment for bag drink cost more the regular airline Well never use this company again we use regular company like Delta korea japan China and even scoot parent company Singapore Air

We had 2 attempts to land at Singapore Changing during a thunderstorm. Everything was delayed by 1 hour plus.

Boarding was not accordingly after front seat, bmf then back seat. This delayed for at least 40mins or more. The staff at Jakarta can do better. Is chaos at the entry to board the plane. This tarnished Scoot reputation when everyone was talking about it.

The crew was not customer oriented at all, even confrontational . The aircraft needs more attention to detail as far as comfort, and the 1 hour sitting at the gate with no air is inexcusable

We flew on the 787 Dreamliner direct to main gate at KLIA2, quick entry via eGate and on the train 41mins after touchdown. Go well SCOOT

Was on scoot plus. The only good thing about the flight was the spacious seats. Tables and armrests were extremely dirty Food: bad Entertainment: non existent Wifi: unable to connect, then was painfully slow that we couldn’t even send messages Good thing we had a night flight, so we just slept throughout.

Not clear why boarding passes could only be issued at the counter and not through the kiosk. I had already check-in on the web, so waiting to obtain a boarding pass 1.5 hours before the actual flight defeats the purpose of early web check-in.

no charging point. food offering is limited and very much on the budget line. Overall is not satisfying for such a price and duration of flight.

We were delayed, but there was never any update given. Everyone was standing at the gate as boarding was supposed to commence at 13:10 for a 13:55 flight. We didn't actually start getting on the shuttles to the plane, until after 14:00. No updates, no information given at all.

Inside view

"The city feels familiar, yet every time I visit, I discover something new. New York has an energy that's quite unlike anywhere else - iconic, diverse and unforgettable. I like to grab an early morning coffee and take a stroll through Times Square and across Brooklyn Bridge before the crowds set in. If you have a head for heights, there are a few observation decks to choose from. The glass floor at Edge has to be my favourite as the views are exceptional."

New York holiday FAQs

Make the most of your new york holiday.

With so much to see and do in New York, it can be tricky to know where to start, but don’t fret – our essential guide to holidays in New York will have you looking like a local in no time.

Where are the best areas to stay in New York?

New York’s sights are spread around the city, though most first-timers will want to stay somewhere on Manhattan Island. We’ve pulled out some of the best areas to stay in the city, below.

Many first-time visitors opt to stay near Times Square. It’s not known as ‘The Crossroads of the World’ for nothing: it’s one of the world’s busiest pedestrian areas and is well-connected to many of the city’s main sights. Stay at Tempo by Hilton New York Times Square and enjoy a finely tuned sleep environment and a dedicated Get Ready Zone designed for the responsible traveller. Midtown, the area around Times Square, is where you’ll find the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, and the Rockefeller Center. Try booking the New York Hilton Midtown .

If you’re hankering for a luxury hotel with all the trimmings: bells, whistles and bellhops, then Central Park, on the Upper East Side, is your best bet. This area is one of the most expensive in the city. This is the ultimate destination for culture (think opera, ballet, jazz, classical music, Michelin-starred restaurants) – and a taste of old New York. As you walk along Fifth Avenue, bordering Central Park, you’ll encounter ‘Museum Mile’, an area of prestigious institutions like the Met and the Frick. Stay at Park Lane New York and relish timeless views from the intimate rooftop, Darling.

Staying on the Lower East Side puts you near Brooklyn Bridge and the Tenement Museum – a popular museum exploring the area’s working-class roots. The LES has gentrified rapidly in the last couple of decades. Hotel Indigo Lower East Side New York gives you a feel for the area as it is now: trendy, young and fun.

Several eye-catching cast iron buildings form the backbone of the SoHo district, which sits below Midtown. The name comes from the area’s geography: it’s the region south of Houston Street, in downtown Broadway. SoHo is synonymous with shopping – with boutiques for everyone from Wolf & Badger to Celine. Stay at NoMo SoHo for interiors stuffed with vintage finds and curious furnishings. Tribeca sits along the Hudson River, north of the Financial District. Hudson River Park and its promenade provide a breath of fresh air amid the hustle and bustle of Manhattan – quite literally. Stay at Walker Hotel Tribeca which gives a nod to the neighbourhood’s industrial past with practical design, utilitarian furnishings and whitewashed brickwork.

When is the best time of year to visit NYC?

New York never stays the same. It refashions itself throughout the year, offering something different in every season. Visit in spring and stroll through blossoming parks. Toast to the skyline on a terrace in summer. See the city’s trees painted in fiery reds and golden hues in autumn. Or go in winter and wrap yourself in a big coat before staring up at the famous Rockefeller Christmas tree – there's a reason so many films romanticise Christmas in New York. Check out our New York Travel Guide for a lowdown on the city's seasonal highlights and start planning your New York city break now.

More About Scotland

In the northern part of Great Britain, Scotland makes up nearly one-third of the United Kingdom's land area. With a sense of mystery and pride, Scotland's breathtaking, wild beauty consists of Georgian architecture, medieval ruins, rugged landscapes, and scenic lochs throughout the Scottish Countryside. With more castles than anywhere else in the United Kingdom, these medieval marvels are a must-see. In southeast Scotland, Edinburgh Castle commands attention atop Castle Rock, an extinct volcanic hill. As the sound of bagpipes echo through the air adding a musical touch to the country's cultural heritage, Scotland beckons travelers to explore and embrace the warmth of its people, and the rich tradition of kilts and tartans.

In Scotland, Taking the Traditional and Making It New

Tartan, whisky, restaurants in the middle of nowhere — all are being reimagined in newly fashionable “Outlander” territory.

Cool-kid chefs turning local bounty into Michelin-worthy dishes, an artisan whisky boom and a clutch of stylish hotels have helped Scotland shrug off its saturnine image and rebrand as a misty, moody mecca.

The cult following of the time-travel television series “Outlander” has added to the patina. Its depiction of Highland clan life, along with stunning locations from Inverness to Edinburgh, has fueled a tourism spike that the National Trust for Scotland refers to as “the Outlander Effect.”

Seen from the air, a river flows past green fields and tree-covered hills.

One thing is clear: Between women-helmed whisky start-ups, the rise in gastronomic tasting menus in middle-of-nowhere settings‌ ‌and the classic tartan pattern’s spike in popularity, Gaelic culture has been rejiggered in a fresh and exciting way. It’s enough to make closely held traditions relevant to Millennials, Gen Z and people old enough to remember when “Braveheart” came out on the big screen. Here, some of the new Scotland highlights.

If there were a symbol for Scotland, it would be tartan. You see it everywhere, from hotel interiors and tabletop items to cookie tins and everyday clothing. For centuries, tartan, which comes in thousands of iterations, has served as an identifying feature for Highland clans. When the British government attempted to restrain the use of “Highland dress” in 1747, after the failed Jacobite Rising, tartan became a testament to endurance, even rebellion.

“Tartan, today, is a symbol of subcultures everywhere, not just in Scotland,” said Mhairi Maxwell, a curator of the recently opened “Tartan” exhibition at the V+A Museum in Dundee, which gives‌ historic ‌context to how a humble fabric became a global symbol and driving force in fashion and design (through January 2024).

To the 34-year-old Araminta Campbell , custom tartan is the stuff of modern heirlooms. She creates one-of-a-kind patterns that express her client’s ancestry, interests and connections to place. Her ready-made shawls, scarves and throws can be found at the Scottish Textiles Showcase in Edinburgh, a shop near the Royal Mile that supports local wool mills and artisan makers producing sustainable products. Custom pieces are by appointment at the designer’s atelier. Ready-made pieces start at 295 British pounds (about $375); custom pieces start at £5,000‌.

Restaurants

At Fhior in Edinburgh, the chef Scott Smith’s passion for coaxing knock-your-socks-off flavor from humble Scottish ingredients is displayed in his ‌seven- and 10-course tasting menus. One dish, flash-fried, koji-brined cauliflower with a relish of lovage-seed spiked apricot, is an umami blast with burnt orange zip. ‌The cuisine may be haute, but the vibe is not. “We focus on flavor, not pretense,” said Mr. Smith, 34, of his casually cool restaurant, with a wall mural painted by the staff (it hides the cracks) and Arctic Monkeys-heavy playlist‌ (£85 for seven courses; £105 for 10 courses, without alcohol).

What was once a tourist cafeteria inside the country’s oldest working distillery is now a six-table fine-dining restaurant. The Glenturret whisky brand was purchased by Lalique, the French glassmaker, in 2018, and at the Glenturret Lalique Restaurant in rural Perthshire, an hour’s drive from Glasgow, the chef Mark Donald works with local foragers, gamekeepers and fishers to orchestrate 16-course tasting menus that give Scottish staples a kick — with humor.

Case in point: ‌His version of a ‌tattie scone, a breakfast staple of fried unleavened potato bread, ‌is an opulent one-bite, mayo-laced bao bun layered with Highland ‌Wagyu beef, truffle and a bump of caviar.

Whisky, naturally, makes cameos. ‌A pre-dessert cocktail features a tableside mist of aromatic “new make” (whisky before it is cask-aged), which perfumes the drink and the air. “We want to smash stereotypes and make guests feel that they’ve had more than just a meal,” said the 34-year-old chef, who cut his teeth at Noma, Gleneagles and the Balmoral Hotel. The restaurant recently earned a Michelin Star‌ (£195 without alcohol; wine pairings are an additional £110).

‘Restaurants with rooms’

In 2021, Tom Tsappis and Matilda Ruffle, both in their 30s, opened the five-room Killiecrankie House in a 19th-century former vicarage in Perthshire. It is part of a growing trend of “restaurants with rooms,” small country guesthouses offering sophisticated dinners.

‌The couple envisioned a boundary-pushing tasting menu with lots of cheek and zero haughtiness.

Here’s how a stay unfolds: After the 4 p.m. check-in, guests gather for cocktails and get-to-know-you banter, either in the teal-and-pink salon or the garden. At 7, the three-hour dinner begins. First are light bites like venison tartare flecked with pickled garlic buds and served with bramble purée, and a seaweed “cornetto” filled with salmon belly tartare and salmon mousse. Then come heartier dishes like liver and onions, which uses sake-cured monkfish liver instead of the usual beef.

Drinks pairings are equally plucky, with a cider from Fife, a dry-hopped local lager and a Cypriot dessert wine called Commandaria (dinner, £105 without alcohol; the “discovery” ‌drinks pairing is an additional £75; overnight stay is £520 for two with dinner and breakfast).

The Dipping Lugger , which also opened during the pandemic, is a love song to a centuries-old house, the notable characters who inhabited it and the fishing village (Ullapool) that surrounds it. The design of the three-room property juxtaposes period pieces with whimsical ones: wingback chairs, ‌fireplaces, velvet sofas set off by quirky wallpaper, and framed posters of Mumford & Sons and other bands, a nod to the side gig of the owners Robert Hicks, 52, and Helen Chalmers, 42, as music promoters.

Food, of course, is the focus. The 31-year-old chef David Smith’s ever-changing, seven-course menu is a snapshot of the environs. For example, seaweed powder-dusted Loch Broom langoustine is plated with a prawn ravioli dotted with lemon ‌purée and sea fennel; a smoky Lapsang souchong tea-bathed deer loin has a bright pea ‌purée and pickled trumpet mushrooms. Of note: The property is along the spectacularly scenic North Highlands route known as the North Coast 500 (dinner, £95; £60 for wine pairings; overnight, £450 includes dinner and breakfast for two).

“Good cooking is storytelling: who you are, where you came from and where you are right now,” explained the chef Pamela Brunton, 45, a pioneer of destination tasting menus in Scotland. Since 2015, Ms. Brunton has been redefining the concept of modern Scottish cuisine from the whitewashed fisherman’s-cottage-turned-restaurant called Inver that she operates with her partner, Rob Latimer, 44, in the Northwest Highlands. Dishes ooze the here and now: oysters just pulled from the loch drizzled with citrusy sea buckthorn juice; local lamb paired with hedgerow herbs and served with a wild garlic emulsion; asparagus with foraged sea beet, sea kale, sea lettuce and samphire atop custardy Rainton Tomme cheese.

Commitment to sustainability and nose-to-tail cooking‌ has earned the restaurant a Michelin Green Star for outstanding‌ sustainability initiatives. There are six stand-alone cabins with panoramic views of mountains and Loch Fyne (dinner £95, wine pairings are an additional £65; lunch can be ordered à la carte; overnight, starts at £195 and includes breakfast but not dinner).

On a family farm in a fertile pocket of Angus, between Dundee and Aberdeen, Arbikie Distillery is pioneering single-estate spirits with hardcore sustainability practices. The brothers John, Iain and David Stirling, all in their 50s, founded a field-to-bottle distillery in 2013 and, within five years, introduced a rye Scotch whisky (one hadn’t been made in Scotland in over a century, the distillery says). In 2020, they created what they say are the world’s first climate-positive spirits, by planting peas and beans which reverse the distillery’s carbon output.

In terms of flavor, their spirits have a taste of the terroir, since all ingredients originate on the farm. Next up? Installing a wind turbine to power the distillery with green hydrogen. Arbikie offers tastings at its distillery seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; £25. Its spirits are newly available in the United States.

As if being a woman at the helm of a start-from-scratch whisky brand was not innovative enough, 40-year-old Annabel Thomas has made herself known on the sustainability front. In 2020, Ms. Thomas bottled her first batch of Nc’nean at the company’s remote West Highlands distillery, which is an hour and a half drive from Fort William and requires a ferry crossing. Within two years, the company had attained B Corporation status, which signifies that it has met certain standards for social and environmental performance, and achieved net zero emissions for its own operations.

Ms. Thomas also bucks tradition on the flavor front. Her whisky, which does not adhere to classic aging practices, is light, citrusy and unpeated. “Classic whisky is designed for 70-year-olds. I wanted to create something for the new generation, a contemporary looking, lighter-tasting product that is transparent about environmental impact,” she said. The company currently offers a single-malt whisky, a gin-like botanical spirit and a seasonal small-batch whisky called Huntress that experiments with yeast. Nc’nean offers two daily tours, Monday through Friday, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; £18. Private tours are also available.

On St. Andrews Square in Edinburgh, Gleneagles Townhouse is a reimagined 19th-century bank that pulses with 21st-century glamour, from its stunning glass-domed restaurant, the Spence, where pink, green and blue velvet sofas offer birds-eye views of ornate plasterwork, to its 33 rooms, each individually outfitted with tasseled crown-canopy headboards, antique-looking chandeliers and rugs, plus marble-floored bathrooms, many with free-standing bathtubs.

Since the property opened in June 2022, the Spence has become the city’s social hub, a stylish perch for all-day brasserie-style food and fanciful cocktails (doubles from £450 per night; entree prices range from £17 to £45).

When Manuela and Iwan Wirth of the acclaimed contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth opened the Fife Arms, their renovated Victorian coach inn in 2018, the Highlands town of Braemar became a destination for design aficionados. The hotel is a glorious mash-up of art, culture and history, where a Picasso is hung ‌upon‌ tartan-clad walls and ‌set off by‌ a ceiling mural by the Chinese artist Zhang Enli, and a watercolor by Queen Victoria hangs a few paces from a hot pink cocktail bar dedicated to Elsa Schiaparelli.

Each of the 46 wildly cozy rooms salutes a notable Scot or visitor to the region (for example, Flora Macdonald, a heroine of the Jacobite movement) and brims with character in the form of eye-catching wall coverings, curated bric-a-brac and artwork. This being the Highlands, the great outdoors beckons. “Ghillies,” or local guides, are on tap for horseback riding, fly-fishing, birding and hiking in Cairngorms National Park (doubles from £600 per night).

With its widely spread out attractions, wind-whipped landscape and lack of public transport, Scotland can be challenging to tackle on your own, especially if the thought of driving on the “wrong” side is daunting. Highland Explorer Tours offers bus-based group tours ranging from single-day outings to the Highlands (highlight: flying across the arched Glenfinnan viaduct on the Jacobite Steam Train , also known as Hogwarts Express from the Harry Potter films, £185 per person) to six-day trips with stops in Orkney, Isle of Skye and‌‌ the beaches along the North Coast 500 (£1,509 per person). Rabbie’s Tours offers one-day (£54) and four-day (£209‌ without lodging) “ Outlander”-themed tours centered on filming locations.

For custom private tours, Away from the Ordinary crafts itineraries with eye-popping niche experiences — surfing on the Isle of Lewis‌‌; salmon fishing on the‌ insanely scenic River Lochy, in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Scotland’s tallest peak; sampling yet-to-be-released casks at micro whisky distilleries. Beyond activities‌‌, the company can secure tucked-away lodging and car transfers‌ (starting at $1,000 per day for a couple, including hotel, guide and experiences, but excluding dining).

Another high-end option is to whiz past ‌the scenery aboard Belmond’s Royal Scotsman , an old-world train with wood-paneled sleeping cabins and fine dining. The journeys, which depart from Edinburgh, range from ‌two to ‌seven nights and include off-train excursions such as whisky tastings and clay pigeon shooting on a private estate‌ (rates start at £4,500 per person for 2 nights).

Top 4 airlines serving from New York to Scotland

I commend the flight attendants on our SFO-SIN flight who went above and beyond to provide us with extra snacks and food. This type of service makes the flight experience personal and awesome.

It was a great flight Food was great Crew was spectacular

In general good, but the machine seems to be long in operation and some functions were restricted as e. g. Adjusting of seats.

It seems paying premium economy does not make difference with economy. No priority boarding, not worthy paying extra$$$ for premium economy.

The premium economy seats were not that great. It could have been more premium than economy seats.

People were so nice! Economy seats were small and cramped feeling for me. I’m slender and 6 feet tall

The singapore airline now compared before covid, I like the service before covid. SQ was the best of all airlines but now I am going to look for different airline if I am travelling in asia.

They were able to assist my elderly father and myself after not being able to check in to scoot. The counter service was phenomenal. They did what they could to get us on the next plane so we could catch our Connecting flight. Scoot closed early on us so we ended up missing our flight.

The stewardess was very helpful all the way. My seat had an issue with headphones and after the replaced and gave me a new pair and noticed it was the seat I got a new chair to sit and a great ride back home

Due to the delay of my first flight, my connecting flight with JetBlue was canceled by Singapore Airlines, but the JetBlue crew was very accommodating and rebooked a seat for me. The crew was very nice and had good attitude.

The overall flight went well and the aircrew was pleasant.

Cathay Pacific seems to be an airline in trouble and on its way out. Lots of broken or poorly functioning things like entertainment screens, seats, and enough well trained staff to handle a full flight. Sad...

The flight crew was exceptionally good. Personal needs were well met. The food choices were very nice.

Excellent. Planes are a little older and could get some refurbishment, but besides that everything was excellent.

Not good. Flight was purchased for my father who needed medical assistance to board and transfer due to a heart condition. No one at Hong Kong from Cathay was there to assist and he barely made the connection. When I talked to him he could barely breath and was not sure he was going to make it. Really poor service even though the ticket stated he needed a wheelchair assistance.

The boarding experience was as expected and went well. The plane's economy seating plan is not designed for a positive customer experience but rather for company profit. When the passenger in front of me reclined, the distance from the screen to my face was the span of my hand (thumb tip to pinky fingertip). There is no such thing as personal space in this setting. This results in the domino effect, for when I recline the person in back of me reclines and so it goes. This is not to say that reclining is the answer as the experience is not increased, but simply managed.

While I was in great pain, the seat was sufficiently comfortable to allow me to rest and not be in so much pain.

we were upgraded which was a blessing and tender mercy for us. I fell the day before and was in extreme pain from knee to shoulder. Sitting in a more comfortable seat during the flight was an unexpected blessing and experience.

My seat was sold off to someone else. Had to wait 9 hours to catch the next filght. Definitely will never use Cathay Pacific again. Bad, very bad airline. will comment on google reviews too.

Seats were very comfortable. Crew were excellent. Food very good.

Delay flight more than 8hours waiting and poor customer service!

Plane was extremely small so mind the size of your carry on

Other than lack of snacks, everything else went very well.

They don’t keep you updated on the flight status very well. It was late but nothing said
