Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge
Set on a remote hilltop on the quieter southern side of the Bwindi Forest area of western Uganda, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is a relatively simple but pleasant base, with guest accommodation in 9 rooms and offering a good range of guided activities centred on gorilla tracking. No minimum age (15 for gorilla tracking).

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is located in the Bwindi Forest area of western Uganda.
Bwindi Forest
At just 330 square kilometres, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is a very modestly sized reserve, an island of forest surrounded on all sides by small-scale agriculture.
Remarkably the area hosts almost half of the world's wild mountain gorillas, with an estimated 400 individuals in 20 troops, of which 9 are habituated to the presence of humans, which means that they can usually be approached without being scared off.
The forest is one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet and has been designated a World Heritage Site for its biological significance. It contains 163 species of trees, 104 different species of ferns, over 1000 flowering plant species, 120 mammal species (of which ten are primates), 348 bird species and more than 220 butterfly species.

Getting there
The property is usually accessed by scheduled flight from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip, from where it is a road transfer of around 90 minutes.
It is also possible to arrive here by guided overland safari from Virunga Mountains (8 hours).
A common connection is by trekking through the forest from Buhoma on the north side, which takes 4-7 hours depending on your chosen route.
We usually include all the connecting transport for your trip unless you specifically ask us not to.
The lodge is centred on a cosy main building, leading out to a terrace.
Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is owned and operated by Nkuringo Walking Safaris, a small company based in Entebbe.
The company was formed in 2007 by Robert Brierley from England. It was during a research trip to the town of Kisoro that he decided to explore the Nteko Ridge on the southern side of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The area was virtually unexplored by outsiders and Robert had the bright idea of connecting it to the more established Buhoma area by setting up trails through the forest.
He soon established a simple backpacker lodge here, which has slowly developed into the decent mid-range property that we see today.
As its name suggests, Nkuringo Walking Safaris is very much focused on exploring on foot and offers a remarkable range of different hikes, both in this area and across Uganda.
We most commonly recommend Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge for inclusion in trips, but we are more than happy to also provide hikes in the Virunga Mountains, the Rwenzori Mountains, Mount Elgon and other such far flung locations, using Robert's excellent guides and support teams.
Dining options
The food service atNkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is usually to a reasonably high quality. Meals are usually served at separate tables, in conventional restaurant style. Special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and other variations should not be a problem, so long as you let us know at the time of booking.
Power and connectivity
The property runs on solar power, with regular 230Vac electricity available 24 hours, but with restrictions on using higher power items such as hair dryers.
There are no power outlets in the rooms, but there is a central station in the main building for charging electronic equipment. The outlets are British standard three rectangular pin format. Adaptors are usually available, but it is always worth bringing your own, in which case we recommend buying them in advance rather than trying to get them at the airport on the way, since they often run out.
WiFi is available in main areas (which is rather unfortunate, the concensus in the safari world is that it should be in the rooms only). Connection speeds are likely to be slow and could be intermittent.
There should be some mobile phone signal in this location.
Child policy
There is no minimum age at this property.
However the camp is not specifically geared up for children, is unfenced and could be potentially very dangerous. Adult supervision is essential at all times.
Although the staff and guides will naturally try to tailor the experience to suit all guests, there are no special facilities for children, who are obliged to behave with due consideration for other guests.
Please note that the minimum age for gorilla tracking is 15 years old.
Tipping guide
In Africa tipping is definitely not obligatory, but it is commonplace. If you feel that the service provided has been excellent, then you may consider giving tips as follows ...
Lead guide : USD 10 per guest per day Assistant guide or tracker : USD 5 per guest per day Camp staff : USD 5 per guest per day
Staff understand that guests of different nationalities come very different tipping cultures and adjust their expectations accordingly, so you really should tip as you feel comfortable.
Tips are usually given in cash, USD, EUR, GBP and ZAR being the most common currencies. If you are running short of cash or prefer not to carry so much currency, it is often possible to settle tips by bank card.
Guest accommodation is in eight Garden Cottage Rooms ...
... and four Two Bedroom Villas, each with two bathrooms.
Activities are centred on gorilla tracking, plus forest walks, hiking, canoeing and cultural visits to the local Batwa pygmies.

Forest walks
Bird-watching
Experienced bird watchers have been known to identify up to 100 species in a single day here in Bwindi. The area is home to 90% of all Albertine Rift endemic species, with highlights including short-tailed warblers, rusty-faced woodland warblers, bar-tailed trogons, Gruel’s rush warblers, Wilcock’s honey-guides, yellow-eyed black fly-catchers, Kivu ground thrushes, dusky crimson wings and white-tailed blue monarchs.
During your stay you can undertake guided or unguided walks around the grounds of the lodge, the village and surrounding farmland, plus guided hikes within the national park in search of various feathered species.
Walking safari
The guys here at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge are passionate walkers and have developed an incredible range of walks and treks for guests. It is literally possible to stay here for seven or more nights and do a completely different trek every day.
Top of the World Walk : 2 to 3 hours
Heading out from the lodge, we first stroll through Nkuringo village and take some small foot paths through farmland to a rise that we call the Top of the World, with astounding views overlooking the surrounding mountains, valleys and ridges. A great way to stretch your legs after gorilla tracking. Beautiful in the afternoon when the sun is setting.
Buffer Zone Walk : 2 to 3 hours
The buffer zone is a transition area between Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the cultivated areas where the people live. Nowadays a lot of tea is grown in this area because gorillas do not like tea and it prevents them from raiding crops in the farms beyond. This walk is great for birding and learning about the rural farming communities.
Suma Water Fall Walk : 4 to 5 hours
Another community walk through farmlands leads 6km to the village of Suma, where there is a waterfall. On the way you pass one of the biggest villages in the area, with more than 500 people. The village has a man famous for having 16 wives. The waterfall itself is surrounded by different species of trees that are home to plenty of endemic bird species, including northern double-collared sunbirds, violet-backed starlings and great blue-eared starlings. Best done in the morning.
Nombe Pocket Forest Walk : 5 to 6 hours
The pocket forest was previously a part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is still quite impenetrable. It was cut off from the main forest by human encroachment. The walk takes you through beautiful little farming villages and the forest itself is great for birding.
Kisoro to Nkuringo Walk and Canoe : 8 hours
Batwa pygmies
But if you really want to support conservation in the area, it is important that you try to focus some of your expenditure on the local communities.
The Batwa people are the oldest inhabitants of the Great Lakes region of Central Africa. They are traditionally hunter-gatherers who lived in the forests of the region. They were first recorded by the Egyptians over 4000 years ago, who described them as short statured people living near the Mountains of the Moon and extolling their abilities as dancers and story tellers. The tribe numbers around 80,000 people, spread across Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Congo.
Prior to the declaration of the national park here in 1991, local people used to be able to access the forest for hunting, mining, logging and honey collecting. The cessation of access rights caused a great deal of resentment among these communities.
The Batwa pygmy people were particularly badly affected. They used to largely live a traditional hunter-gatherer existence in the forest, fishing and harvesting wild yams. But despite having lived in the area for many generations and having many ancestral sites within the park, their rights to remain were not recognised and they were evicted without compensation.
Now that Bwindi Forest is managing to attract a significant flow of visitors and generate a decent amount of revenue, there are high hopes that local people can really start to share in the results and become fully supportive of further conservation.
A visit to the Batwa people is therefore an essential way to help them, whilst gaining an insight into their unique culture.
Batwa Community Walk : 1-2 hours
This short guided walk enables you to meet prominent members of the community and experience tribal traditions such as dancing and singing.
Batwa Forest Walk : 5-6 hours
This longer experience provided by the Batwa Development Program enables you to witness, understand and participate in the traditional lifestyle of the Batwa when they lived in the forest and depended upon their hunting and gathering skills for their daily needs.
It starts with a three hour walk in the forest, followed by about an hour spent with the Batwa and ending with a two hour walk back to base. The visit usually includes a musical performance, a visitation by a traditional deity, demonstrations of hunting and gathering techniques, as well a a generaly opportunity to witness their historic and mysterious way of life in the forest.
It would be great if more people could add an extra night to their stay in the area in order to do this experience, it's pretty cool and so important for these local people.
Community projects
In 2007 Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge founded the Nkruingo Youth Initiative Foundation in order to promote, engage and inspire vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people who are trapped in the vicious cycle of poverty and conflict, to provide them with basic health and education services and provide opportunities for them to learn skill which enable them enjoy a more dignified way of life.
Guests are welcome to visit the various projects and, if you wish, get involved.
Nkuringo Crafts Project
The project produces a range of handicraft products including bags, baskets, drums, table mats, floor mats, rugs, paintings, copper reliefs, sculptures, wall decorations, beaded items, earrings, necklaces and greeting cards, all using environmentally friendly materials which are sourced locally and ethically.
Nkuringo Community Library
A community library has been set up to promote a reading culture amongst local pople and to allow school children access to the materials they need to help further their studies.
Nkuringo Wild Honey Project
The project works closely with the local farms, helping them to brand their honey and supply it to the local lodges. Youngsters visit the farms to learning about bee-keeping and honey production. The project has also purchased hives and land in order to increase access to the means of production.
Nkuringo Oyster Mushroom Project
Mushroom cultivation can help reduce vulnerability to poverty and strengthen livelihoods through the generation of a fast yielding and nutritious source of food and a reliable source of income. Since it does not require access to land, mushroom cultivation is a viable and attractive activity for less well off members of the community. It also provides opportunities for improving the sustainability of small farming systems through the recycling of organic matter, which can be used as a growing substrate, and then returned to the land as fertilizer.
Nkuringo Coffee plantation project
Over 85% of Uganda’s population live in rural areas and are engaged in subsistence agriculture as their principle livelihood. Coffee is the most important cash crop, with households operating small units of 100 to 2000 trees, which are responsible for the bulk of Ugandan coffee.
This project promotes sustainable coffee agriculture by improving productivity with a particular emphasis on the involvement of youth and women in community of Nkuringo.
The primary activity is gorilla tracking up into the mountain forests.
The reserve is home to twenty families of gorillas, totalling around 400 individuals.
Gorilla families
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest contains an estimated 20 families of gorillas, totalling around 400 individuals. Seventeen of these families have been habituated to the presence of human beings and can be viewed at close quarters.
Only 72 gorilla tracking permits are issued each day, so you need to book extremely early and pay up front to secure a spot to visit one of the more interesting and accessible gorilla families
These groups are accessed from four separate Park Gates on different sides of the forest ...
1.00 : Buhoma
Buhoma is the location for the main Park Headquarters, on the northwestern side of the forest. This is where the first gorilla groups were habituated back in the 1990's and is home to the majority of the area's accommodation. Guests at lodges in this area have access to three habituated gorilla groups, one in the immediate vicinity and the other two requiring a drive of up to an hour to the trailheads. When permits run low it is also possible to access the gorillas of the Ruhija area to the northeast, although it is about an hour and a half drive to the trailhead there.
Recommended lodges in this area include Buhoma Lodge and Mahogany Springs.
1.01 : Family group 1 : Rushegura
The Rushegura gorilla family came together in 2002, after one of the silverbacks from the Habinyanja group decided to break away. The Rushegura group is a calm family of 19 members, including one silverback. In the past they used to cross the border and venture in the neighbouring DR Congo every now and then, but they always returned and have now settled in Bwindi.
1.02 : Family group 2 : Mubare
Found in the Mubare Hills area, the Mubare family is the oldest habituated gorilla group in Uganda. The group started with 12 family members and later grew to 18 individuals. Unfortunately, due to fights with other wild gorilla groups, it lost several animals and remained with five members for a number of years until March 2013 when four other members joined, including a new dominant silverback. Permits for this group are in particularly high demand due to the usually easy access.
1.03 : Family group 3 : Habinyanja
The Habinyanja group has 18 members including two silverbacks and was first habituated in 1999. This is a fascinating family with a lot of drama and commotion caused by power struggles between the dominant silverbacks and fights for family leadership. But treks to visit them can be long and arduous.
1.04 : Family group 4 : Katwe
1.10 : Ruhija
The settlement of Ruhija is the location for a Park Gate to the northeast of the reserve. This is the point of access for two habituated groups, plus the one group reserved for research only. These families have been habituated relatively recently compared with those at Buhoma, but are very rewarding to visit.
There is very little in the way of good quality lodges in this area, so the majority of visitors stay in the Buhoma area above and drive for an hour and a half to trek from this gate.
1.11 : Family group 5 : Oruzogo
Situated in Ruhija area, the Oruzogo group is one of the more recent families to be habituated, with 16 members including one silverback. The family has some playful and energetic juveniles.
1.12 : Family group 6 : Bitukura
Bitukura is a peaceful family of 14 members including four silverbacks. The group was named after a river where the family members were first sighted. Their habituation that started in July 2007 was a relatively easy process as the gorillas were frequently encountered by the Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers during preceding years. Originally, the Bitukura family had 24 members, but due to disputes within the family some gorillas chose to leave the group and were probably recruited by other families.
1.13 : Family group 7 : Kyagurilo
1.20 : Nkuringo
The village of Nkuringo is situated on the southwest side of the forest and provides access to one family of gorillas. Trekking from here is notoriously tough because of the steep inclines immediately between the Park Gate and the forest itself. But the area is a lot less busy than the Buhoma area and in some ways scenically even more attractive.
The outstanding lodge option here is the very high-end Clouds Gorilla Lodge, with Nkuringo Gorilla Camp providing a much simpler and lower cost option.
1.21 : Family group 8 : Nkuringo
The Nkuringo family has 18 members including two silverbacks. The family was led by a renowned silverback named Nkuringo who unfortunately died in April 2008, leaving two silverbacks, Safari and Rafiki, to contenst the leadership. Tracking can be rather long and tough.
1.22 : Family group 9 : Christmas
This new family became available to access in September 2018.
1.30 : Rushaga
The Rushaga trailhead is to the southeast of the forest and is the base for three relatively recently habituated groups of gorillas.
Accommodation in this area is pretty thin, with Nshongi Gorilla Resort and Wagtail Safari Camp being the main options. But it is also possible to stay in the Nkuringo area lodges, from where it is about an hour by road.
1.31 : Family group 10 : Nshongi
Nshongi was once the largest group habituated family, with 36 members, including four silverbacks, and was officially introduced in September 2009. It was named after the Nshongi River, where they were first sighted. In July 2010, however, the group split and numbers dropped to 26 members, the others goind on to form the present Mishaya group. In 2013, the family split further and was reduced to 18 members, the departing members forming the Bweza group. The Nshongi group is in a large forested area where you can also see other primates, birds and butterflies.
1.32 : Family group 11 : Mishaya
In July 2010 silverback Mishaya decided to leave the Nshongi group with some females and start his own family. He is a typical fighter and was able to gather more females from other non-habituated groups in the area. Mishaya is the only adult in the group and is known for being a real brawler.
1.33 : Family group 12 : Kahungye
The size of this group is 13 members with three silverbacks. Visitors and gorilla tracking to the Kahungye group commenced in 2011, but in less than a year the group split, creating the new Busingye group. Before the separation, the family consisted of 27 individuals.
1.34 : Family group 13 : Bweza
The Bweza family split from Nshongi group 2013. At first the park authorities thought the groups would rejoin, but when they didn't this family was made available for tracking.
1.35 : Family group 14 : Busingye
The Busingye gorilla group was formed by a breakaway from Kahungye group back in June 2012. It was the silverback Busingye who decided to split and create his own family. Busingye in the local language means ‘peace’, which is quite surprising since this ambitious silverback is known for his legendary fights with other groups. He likes showing his power and whenever encountering a wild family he mercilessly attempts to kidnap a female to add to his own family.
Gorilla trekking overview
Gorilla trekking is operated by the national park guides. Your driverguide will take you to the park gate for registration and collect you at the end of the trek, but will not accompany you into the park itself
On arrival at park headquarters guests are divided into small groups, each with an experienced ranger and allocated a target family.
The degree of difficulty of the trek can vary enormously. Time with the gorillas themselves is restricted to around one hour, so if your family group is within easy reach then you could be up and back in time for a late lunch. But these gorillas do have quite large territories and can sometimes prove much more elusive. If your target family has disappeared up the slopes then the trek can take a full day and be exceedingly tough, especially when it is wet and muddy. The rangers do try to take into account your apparent physical capabilities when dividing you up into groups, but in all events guests should have a good level of fitness.
Chances of seeing gorillas is very high. But there is a world difference between a distant glimpse and an intimate and prolonged encounter. The chances of success are very much dependent upon which target family your are allocated. Easier to reach families are usually reserved for guests who have already had an unsuccessful attempt. All of which means that if you include one trek in your trip your chances of a really good encounter are in the range 60% to 70%, whilst if you include two treks then your chances rise to well over 90%.
We therefore strongly recommend that you include at least two gorilla treks in your trip if possible.
It should be pointed out that the treks should be quite different one from the other, the gorilla territories are spread across a wide area so more often than not your two treks will be in completely different locations.
If you do return early then your guide is at your disposal for exploring the local areas, either in the vehicle or on foot. There are some lovely walks amongst the forests, farmlands and villages around the lodge itself.
Trekking regulations
Trekking regulations have been carefully developed to try to protect the health and well-being of the mountain gorillas and the safety of visitors. Gorillas are extremely susceptible to human diseases and infections. They can become stressed if visited by too many people, if the visitors approach too close or behave in other ways which they find disturbing or threatening. These are wild animals and particularly protective of their young. Please obey all of these rules to the letter ...
1 : Sickness
If a visitor shows signs of sickness, the park staff have the right to refuse a visit to gorillas in order to protect the gorillas from contracting a human illness or disease. If you are not feeling 100% then please discuss this with your guides. Do not be the person responsible for a potential epidemic. If you do sneeze or cough in the proximity of the gorillas, then be sure to cover your mouth, preferably inside your shirt, in order to prevent any aerosol transmission.
2 : Group frequency and size
Each gorilla group can only be visited once per day, by a maximum of 6 or 8 permitted guests, with the interaction lasting a maximum of one hour. This is to minimise behavioural disturbance and stress.
On rare occasions guides may be tempted to bend the rules and take extra people on a trek. Please be sure to make a complaint at the time if you see this happening and report it to park headquarters.
3 : Minimum visitor age
Visitors must be at least fifteen years old, in order to minimise risk of exposing the gorillas to childhood diseases such as mumps, chickenpox, measles etc.
4 : Photography
Flash photographic is not permitted as it can upset or frighten the gorillas and may provoke an aggressive reaction or charge.
5 : Minimum distance
All visitors must remain at least seven metres or 21 feet away from the gorillas at times. If they approach closer ... juveniles often come to within one or two metres, then you should slowly retreat. If this is not possible, then you will be asked to remain where you are. The instructions of the guide should be followed at all times. Keep your backpack and other items in places where young gorillas cannot approach to investigate. These regulations attempt to minimise disease transmission, stress and behavioural disturbance, to reduce the chance of possible aggression towards visitors and to prevent the gorillas becoming too habituated to humans.
Visitors are often keen to break this seven metre rule, being wrapped up in the excitement of the experience, but please be careful not to. If you break the rule then the guides may pull you off the sighting and terminate the trek.
In some instances guides may take you in closer in the hope of making you happy and perhaps getting better tips. Please do not do this and report any such behaviour to park headquarters.
Remember that this forest contains almost half of the world's population and a serious epidemic disease could be catastrophic for the species. Don't let this happen.
6 : Keep together
Visitors should remain in a tight group, without spreading out or surrounding the gorillas. This allows them plenty of room to move where they want to, without felling threatened, which may provoke a charge.
7 : Keep low
Where possible, visitors should sit or crouch whilst watching the gorillas. It can be very intimidating or threatening to the gorillas if you stand tall and stare, since this mimics their own aggressive behaviours.
8 : Keep still
Body language is important and visitors should not raise hands or arms, point or stare. To gorillas these behaviours are signs of threat or aggression.
9 : Do not disturb
Visitors should not clear vegetation close to the gorillas so that they get a better view as this can cause serious disturbance. The guides will clear away any vegetation if it is possible and necessary.
If you are at the back of the group of visitors and cannot get a good view, then make this known to your guide and he will try to get you into a better position.
10 : Don't run
If a silverback gorilla beats his chest, displays or charges, do not run away. Your guides will be on hand. Although a charge may be frightening, the safest thing to do is remain still, keep low and look down. To our knowledge no visitor has even been hurt by a wild gorilla in this area.
11 : Don't eat
Eating, drinking and smoking are not permitted within 200 meters of the gorillas as these behaviours can be intriguing and cause problems if they approach to investigate. Food and other remains can be a source of infection.
12 : Keep quiet
Visitors should be as quiet as possible, and whisper. Never scream, even if you are bitten by safari ants or stung by a nettle. Making a lot of noise may cause some gorillas to react aggressively, but most will simply move away.
13 : Bury your doings
Please go to the bathroom before you set out. If you need to go to the toilet whilst in the forest, then you need to borrow a machete from the guides and dig a 30cm or 10" deep hole and then fill it in properly afterwards. Faeces can be highly infectious to gorillas and other animals.
14 : Leave no litter
All trash must be removed from the park and visitors are asked to be particularly careful not to drop small items, notably used tissues or wipes.
15 : What to bring and wear
Whichever family group you visit, you may have to walk a long distance in steep, muddy conditions, possibly in heavy rain.
- sturdy shoes are essential, proper high-ankled walking boots are preferable - gaiters or long socks that you can tuck in - pants/trousers should be thick to protect from insects and stinging nettles - a long sleeved over-shirt is useful against the morning chill and insects - gardening gloves can be very useful when climbing steep slopes - a poncho or other waterproof jacket may be worthwhile - sunscreen - a hat - at least two litres of bottled water - sufficient covers to protect you camera gear from the elements - binoculars are optional, but especially useful for birders
The gorillas are thoroughly used to people, so it makes little difference whether you wear bright or muted colours, although out of respect for your fellow travellers you really should make the effort to wear appropriate clothes for the forest ... bright and inappropriately dressed people can really mess up photos and videos.
15 : Tipping guide
For gorilla tracking, each guest should tip the head guide around USD 20 and each porter USD10-15. No USD notes earlier than 2006 are accepted.
Further guided forest walks are also available to search for other flora and fauna.
There are various options for further walks and hikes in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest ...
Shorter walks
The park authorities offer various short one to two hour guided walks into the forest in search of general scenery and wildlife. There are also specialist birding walks.
A slightly longer option is the three hour trek to a remote waterfall inside the forest, which is rather pretty and, in our estimation, worth the effort.
These walks can be arranged at your lodge after your arrival. Any additional park fees and tips are payable locally.
Forest traverse hike
If you have chosen to stay at lodge on both the northern and southern sides of the forest, then chances are you will be hiking between the two. This can be done along two different routes ...
Kashasha River Trail : 6-7 hours
The longer hike is around 12km, with lots of ascents and descents as it winds up and around the various valleys. It is a considerably more immersive experience, but the going is quote tough in places and the descents are hard on the knees, walking poles would be a good idea. We also included a diversion to the pretty Kashasha Waterfall and in total the traverse took us about seven hours at a moderate to slow pace.
Ivy River Trail : 4 hours
This Ivy River route ascends and descends gently through beautiful areas of the rain forest with several viewpoints overlooking lush mist shrouded valleys. The trail is also an important footpath for local people travelling between the villages of Nkuringo and Nteko, particularly on market days. Common sightings include various monkeys, duikers, bush pigs and some of Bwindi's many bird and butterfly species. It is rather less dramatic than the longer route and can be done in under three hours, but you can also add the waterfalls in maybe 4.5 hours total.
We were accompanied on the walk by an excellent guide, a policeman and a UWA ranger, as well as porters to carry our luggage.
Each guest should tip the head guide around USD 20 and other staff members around USD 10-15, so about UD 50 per guest in total. Please make sure that you only offer notes minted within the last five years.
It is also possible to go canoeing on the beautiful Lake Mutanda.
Canoe safari
Afterwards we went on a further hike, which was tiring, but did lead up to some impressive viewpoints.
Starting from the lodge, we walk for 5km through farmlands and villages, beyond the earshot of vehicles or machinery, but simply surrounded by the hum and energy of rural village life. A truly special experience.
Reaching the beautiful Lake Mutanda, with its thirteen islands, we spend around two hours on a canoe safari. Sit back and take it easy, whilst a local boatman paddles you across this amazingly beautiful lake in traditional dug out canoes. Unlike the environmentally sensitive fibreglass canoes that we are used to elsewhere, these were proper wooden eucalyptus dugout canoes.
Lunch is taken in a local restaurant on the lakeshore.
Afterwards we continue the hike across pockets of forest which rich in birdlife and more relaxed rural villages, either onwards to the town of Kisoro or back to the lodge.
When heading onwards, it is possible to next go on a tour of a local coffee plantation, viewing the whole process from the planting of the bush to pouring a brew. You will certainly appreciate each cup more after you have seen all the hard work that goes into it. After that we can return to the lodge by road.
The area can be visited at any time of year, there is very little seasonality.
The main potential downsides are the high prices, the simplicity of the facilities, outdoorsy activities, visitor traffic around Buhoma and the small chance of not getting a good gorilla encounter.
Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, like all properties, has a long list of potential downsides. Please do not be unnecessarily put off by this section. Our only intention in raising these issues is to ensure that you get to the best and most appropriate places and that your expectations are met and hopefully exceeded ...
High prices
The main problem with this property from most people's perspective are the very high prices.
Relative to other properties in this area, it is towards the lower end of the range and once you factor in the expensive gorilla permits it really does work out to be a big sticker item.
Rates during low seasons may be considerably lower, so that may be worth considering. Check the seasonality section above for more details.
It is worth noting that there are sometimes long stay discounts available, as well as discounts for combining with other camps under the same ownership. Please ask us for more information.
Expensive extras
As well as the high price of accommodation, there are some major additional costs that cannot be avoided, notably the extremely expensive gorilla permits. At least you can console yourself with the knowledge that the majority of these funds are going in the direction of critical gorilla conservation work.
Lack of availability
With only 72 gorilla tracking permits being issued each day, availability can be a major headache. It is usually necessary to book extremely early and pay up front to secure a spot to visit one of the more interesting and accessible gorilla families.
Shortage of room availability is also a major issue in this particular area. The premium gorillas lodges are heavily over-demanded during the main Dec-Jan and Jun-Oct seasons. It really is best to book a year ahead if you want to be sure to get space in the very best properties.
Lodge location
The lodge is located close to Nkuringo village, which is a relatively peaceful location on the south side of the forest, a lot less busy than the Buhoma area.
The disadvantages of this location are that it is more difficult to access and, perhaps most importantly, the gorilla tracking is significantly more difficult due to the more severe gradients.
Simple lodge
The lodge is very pleasant, as you can see in the images, but it is not a luxury facility and is, in some ways, rather simple. It's origins as a backpacker lodge still show through at times.
Human encroachment and conservation
When visiting this area we always find ourselves getting rather upset by the way that human settlement and agriculture encroaches on the gorilla areas. These few peaks are totally surrounded by patterns of fields, the forest is very much an island in a sea of human activity.
On the one hand it is wonderful that we managed to stop this tide just in time to save the four hundred or so remaining gorillas, but on the other hand it is a travesty that we have allowed our species to grow to six billion people and squeeze out so much of the wildlife.
The great consoling factor is that, with the gorilla permits and lodges now being so expensive, the forest is now worth more per square kilometre than the surrounding farmland, so we expect that the forest and the number of gorillas will start to expand, all thanks to the revenues from tourism. That's why we do all this in the first place, so it makes us very happy. Your visit makes a significant difference, this is definitely one of the best ways that you could ever choose to spend your money.
Outdoorsy activities
As described in the activities section, the gorilla treks can become rather tough, especially if your target family has disappeared off over the forest ridges. Guests need to be fit and outdoorsy, ready to hike all day in adverse conditions if needed.
Chances of not getting a good gorilla encounter
Again this is covered in more detail in the activities section, but in a nutshell we estimate that your chances of a really good gorilla encounter are in the range 60% to 70% for a single trek.
If you include two treks then your chances rise to well over 90%, but obviously this involves paying for two very expensive permits per person.
Shared safari
For all gorilla tracking activities guests are obliged to meet at park headquarters, to join together with people from other lodges and to head into the forest in the company of park rangers. Your private guide does not accompany you.
Although the park rangers are generally very good and, obviously, have great experience and knowledge in their field, the fact that this key activity is outside of our control does potentially expose you to lower service levels.
Unfortunately neither we nor our partners on the ground can be held responsible for the quality, reliability or safety of this part of your trip, this is the remit of the park authorities.
Adverse weather
Although the prevailing conditions are pleasant and sunny, there is the potential for significant cloud cover, rainfall and high temperatures year round in these tropical forests.
Rainfall tends to be a little heavier and more persistent Mar-Apr and Oct-Nov.

Say Hello to Our Animals

You may meet curious critters that are just as interested in you as you are in them — it is common for animals to approach the tour bus and get close enough for guests to reach out and touch them. Interacting with these animals is sure to be an unforgettable and highly beneficial experience for your party.
Our New Safari Station
Dedicated to providing our guests with the best possible experience, we are happy to introduce our safari station. Built and launched in 2015, the safari station includes the following:
- A comfortable holding area large enough to fit guests as they wait for their turn to hop aboard the cruiser
- A snack shop where you can grab a drink, some food for the ride, and even feed to give the animals while on the tour
- Well-maintained restrooms for your convenience
Things to Keep in Mind for Your Next Safari Tour
To help guests get the most out of their animal safari in Pennsylvania, we encourage all to be mindful of when the tours begin. Rides go out right when the park opens, and guests are welcome to come early to avoid crowds or waiting in long lines. Our tours last around 45 minutes, providing plenty of time to take in the entire tour without tiring out the youngest in your group. The last tour departs our Safari Station one hour before closing.
Please be advised that we do not accept reservations for our tours as they are offered on a first come, first serve basis. However, even if you miss your preferred time, another is coming up shortly!
