Start from Scratch or with a Base System

The first step in building the best PC for your needs is to determine whether you want to customize each component of your computer or start with a base system. If you are into PC gaming, you may want to consider building from scratch or choosing a base system equipped with an AMD or Nvidia graphics card that provides the smoothest gameplay experience to maximize performance and entertainment value for gamers. AMD Radeon or Nvidia GeForce are obvious choices for customized gaming desktop graphics cards.

How to Build a PC Q&A

What tools do I need to build a PC? A little bit of time, patience, and a Phillips head screwdriver are the only true essentials for building a PC. However, you can often make the building process easier and more organized by getting a few more key supplies together, including a flathead screwdriver, a tray for screws, an anti-static wristband , and some zip ties for cable management .

While it may seem a little daunting at first if you’re a first-time builder, if you think you can finish a puzzle, then you can build your own PC. There are a lot of great guides available online, especially video guides on YouTube. The Micro Center Community is also a great source of knowledge as our experienced technical support monitor and respond to questions.

What parts do I need to build a PC? We actually have an in depth guide on choosing your PC parts ! This guide will cover all the necessary parts to build a PC and what to look for when buying them. To quickly cover the basics, the core functional parts of your PC build will include:

• Central processing unit (CPU)
• Graphics processing unit (GPU)
• Motherboard
• RAM modules
• Hard drive or solid state drive
• Power supply

While not technically required, you will probably need most or all of these peripheral devices to use and enjoy your PC:

• Mouse and mouse pad

Can someone at Micro Center give me advice on picking parts? Our sales associates know how to build computers. They have overseen thousands of custom PC builds for business, working from home, video production, streaming, and gaming. They have extensive experience with fitment and compatibility across all types of cases, cooling solutions, and lighting options. Visit one of our coast-to-coast locations and one of our associates will be happy to help.

What if I don’t see a part I want in the Custom PC Builder? Our online tool checks availability specifically at your local store. If a part you want isn’t showing up in the list of products, it may be out of stock, so you can click on the option to show all products, or it may not be a product we carry.

Why can’t I select certain parts? Some of the fields will not be available until you select other parts first — e.g., you cannot select RAM until you select a motherboard.

How do I know my PC parts will work together? The Custom PC Builder tool automatically tries to filter out parts that would be incompatible with any you’ve already selected. We always recommend you do a little research and double-check just to be safe.

Where can I build a PC? Most PC builders build at home in their normal living space — you don’t need any kind of special workshop. What you do need is a wide, flat, clean surface made from a non-conductive material like wood, glass, or plastic. A table or desk is ideal. To prevent static discharge, it’s preferable to build in an area without rugs or carpets on the floor, but if that’s not an option, an anti-static mat or wristband will keep your space static-free. Alternatively, you can choose to have our PC experts at Micro Center assemble your PC for you from the parts you’ve chosen!

Can Micro Center help me build a PC? If you’re not sure what you want or would just prefer working with somebody directly, our in-store sales associates are happy to help you pick out parts for your custom PC. Is it better to build or buy? It depends on what you’re looking for! Building your own PC is a fun and exciting project that can teach you a lot about computers and ensure your computer has exactly the components and performance you want. Plus, doing it yourself will typically save you money.

However, buying a PC is also a great option if convenience is a priority. Micro Center offers a great selection of prebuilt PCs , including our own PowerSpec PCs assembled in-house by our computer experts. We’ll also build a custom PC for you using your chosen components! How do I know my pc parts will work together? The Custom PC Builder tool automatically tries to filter out parts that would be incompatible with any you’ve already selected. We always recommend you do a little research and double check just to be safe.

How much does it cost to build? The cost of your PC build will depend entirely on what components you choose. Budget builds may cost only a few hundred dollars, while a top-shelf gaming rig or creative workstation can run into the thousands. Use our PC builder tool for a detailed rundown of what your new PC will cost.

How long does it take to build? Building a PC can be surprisingly quick. Once you have all of your components ready, many builders find that the whole assembly process takes around two to six hours. That includes the process of physically installing your components in your case, as well as time for reading component manuals, watching tutorial videos or reading guides, and installing your operating system and driver updates.

Remember, there’s no reason to rush, especially not on your first build! Take your time, double-check everything, read your manuals, and take advantage of the extensive PC building resources available in our Micro Center community.

If you’re using Micro Center’s custom PC building services, we offer same-day service on Tier 1 to Tier 3 builds when you place your order before 4 PM! Since Tier 4 and 5 builds are highly customized, they can vary widely in assembly time. Most people are surprised by just how easy the PC building process is. Generally speaking, PC parts are more user-friendly than they’ve ever been, and tons of resources are available to help you through the process.

A few tips to make your first build easier:

• Use our PC builder to select your parts — it automatically checks for compatibility in critical parts like your motherboard and CPU.
• To get a basic idea of how the process works, watch some tutorial videos and/or read some PC building guides before you get started. Our Micro Center community is full of helpful resources!
• For a smoother experience, try keeping your first build relatively simple. Save features like dual graphics cards or custom water cooling for when you’re more experienced, or use our custom PC building services for a more advanced rig.

Can I share my build online and get feedback?

Yes, once you’ve picked the PC parts, you can save your feedback and then share it on Reddit, the Help Choosing Parts forum in the Micro Center Community, or any other forum to get other people’s feedback. You can share the URL or the list of parts in various formats: HTML, text, markdown, etc.

How do I place my order?

Once you’ve selected the parts in the Custom PC Builder tool, you can click “add to cart” to automatically place everything in the cart. You can then reserve your parts for in-store pickup by going through the checkout process online. Our store associates will locate the items and set them to the side to be picked up within 3 days.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the leaders of our company: founder and Managing Director Paul Chiu and Executive Director SN Chu. Each has had over 18 years of experience in managing 5 star hotels in the region before establishing and dedicating themselves to PC Tours and Travel.

Paul has employed his marketing and operational skills, gained from his position of sales and marketing at the legendary Mandarin Oriental Hotel; he has been a joint director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board for seven years.

General Manager

Cary joined PC Tours in 1996 after graduating from Australia. He gained his experience in running the company in operations, sales, marketing, administration and company development before being named as General Manager of the company.

Nicole commenced her career in the hotel industry in a regional role with Pan Pacific Hotels & Resorts in Australia. Passionate about Asia, she relocated to Hong Kong and spent 5 years as Director of Sales at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong before joining PC Tours. Her extensive connections within the Australia / New Zealand region have resulted in bringing many successful MICE.

General Manager Marketing

Brian started his career in 1985 specialising in handling land arrangements for international cruise lines including Princess Cruises, P&O Cruises and Swan Hellenic Cruises. He is also a veteran in MICE business for Hong Kong, China and Macau who held MICE Director positions for various hotels including the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel and Grand Hyatt Macau prior to joining PC Tours.

You might need to know how the inside of your computer works when upgrading or replacing hardware , reseating devices, or just out of curiosity.

Inside the Case

Understanding how the many parts of a computer connect to each other inside your PC begins with the  case , which physically houses most of the components.

• Power Supply: The power supply connects to nearly every device in the PC to provide power. It's located at the rear of the case.
• Drive Bays: The 5.25" and 3.5" drive bays house the many kinds of storage devices a computer might contain.
• Expansion Slots: The expansion slots at the rear of the case are specially cut out so the peripherals connected to the motherboard can extend from the case for easy connection to external devices such as printers, monitors ,​ and other external devices.

Some computers, such as slim and mini PCs, look different than what is shown in the example above and in the other items below. Still, all computers have basically the same components.

The Motherboard

The motherboard is mounted inside the computer case and is securely attached via small screws through pre-drilled holes. All the components in a computer connect to the motherboard in one way or another.

• Expansion Cards: Motherboards usually contain a number of slots for internal peripheral cards like video cards and sound cards to connect to.
• Back Panel Connectors: The back panel connectors extend out the back of the case for connection to external peripherals.
• CPU & Memory Sockets: The CPU and memory connect directly to the motherboard via the CPU socket connector and memory slots.
• Storage Drive Connectors: Storage devices are connected via cables to the motherboard. There are special connectors for floppy drives , optical drives , and hard drives .

CPU and Memory

• CPU: The CPU attaches directly to a CPU socket on the motherboard located inside the computer. The CPU is inserted into the socket pin-side-down and a small lever helps to secure it. In some pictures of a motherboard, you may see a large fan seated atop the CPU to help disperse heat.
• Memory: Memory is installed in memory sockets located on the motherboard. These are easily found by looking for the small hinges on either side that lock the memory in place.

Storage Devices

Storage drives such as hard drives, optical drives, and floppy drives all connect to the motherboard via cables and are mounted inside the computer.

• SATA Cables: This example shows two hard disk drives that connect to the motherboard via  SATA  cables for fast hard drive access. Another kind of connection is the older PATA  cable connection, but an example isn't shown in this image.
• Power Connectors: Power from the power supply is delivered to both drives via cables that plug into the power port on the drives.

Peripheral Cards

Peripheral cards, such as the video card pictured, connect to compatible slots on the motherboard, inside the computer.

• PCI Connector: This peripheral card was designed with a PCI connector and must be used in this type of slot on the motherboard.

Other types of peripheral cards include sound cards, wireless network cards ,  modems , and more. More and more functions typically found on peripheral cards, such as video and sound, are being integrated directly onto the motherboard to decrease costs.

External Peripherals

Most external peripherals connect to the motherboard connectors that extend from the rear of the case.

• Audio Ports:  Integrated line-out, microphone, and line-in ports provide access to integrated audio, meaning there's no need for sound cards on this particular computer.
• VGA & HDMI Ports: On this motherboard, there's an HDMI port and a  VGA port to provide video out to those types of display devices. Another kind you might see is DVI .
• USB Ports: Devices like mice, keyboards, digital cameras, scanners, and printers often connect to the motherboard via the USB ports .
• LAN Port: The LAN port is used to connect the PC to a local network or to high-speed internet services.
• PS/2 Ports:  Older keyboards and mice that aren't USB devices will connect to the computer via the PS/2 ports (not pictured here). Newer computers don't typically come with PS/2 connections.
• Serial & Parallel Ports:  Also not shown here are a serial port and parallel port to allow connections to printers and other external devices. Like mice and keyboards, these devices have basically been replaced by USB.

【Regarding Car Charter Service】

• The overtime fee is NT$500 per hour. If there is any overtime, please make the payment directly to the driver on-site for the overtime charges.
• The duration of the charter service may exceed the estimated time due to traffic congestion or extended stops at attractions. In the event of overtime, please settle the overtime charges with the driver on-site based on the rate of NT$500 per hour.

【Accommodation Refund Policy】

According to the regulations of the Taiwan Tourism Act, the refund policy for accommodation providers (where "Party A" refers to individual guests and "Party B" refers to the accommodation provider) is as follows:

• If Party A cancels the reservation 14 days or more prior to the scheduled check-in date, Party A may request a full refund of the paid.
• If Party A cancels the reservation between 10 and 13 days prior to the scheduled check-in date, Party A may request a refund of 70% of the paid.
• If Party A cancels the reservation between 7 and 9 days prior to the scheduled check-in date, Party A may request a refund of 50% of the paid.
• If Party A cancels the reservation between 4 and 6 days prior to the scheduled check-in date, Party A may request a refund of 40% of the paid.
• If Party A cancels the reservation between 2 and 3 days prior to the scheduled check-in date, Party A may request a refund of 30% of the paid.
• If Party A cancels the reservation 1 day prior to the scheduled check-in date, Party A may request a refund of 20% of the paid.
• If Party A cancels the reservation on the same day as the scheduled check-in date or fails to provide a cancellation notice, Party B is not obligated to refund any portion of the paid by Party A.
• If Party A cancels the reservation from the scheduled check-in day to the thirteenth day, Pc TOUR will charge a 3% processing fee.
• In case of any uncontrollable factors, according to the regulations of Taiwan's tourism law, a full refund will be provided.
